“My goal is to help you look better and live better. Regenerative aesthetics is all about sculpting faces with treatments that make your own skin healthier for lasting results, such as biostimulatory fillers and skin boosters, and threadlifts for instant lift and long-term collagen stimulation.”

Jaime Cruse, LE

“I’ve learned in my 40’s the importance of having stabilized hormones and how they play an important role in the overall health of your skin! Do you know how crucial estrogen is for the stimulation of collagen? Pair our Biote hormones with any of our treatments and it’s a perfect match. For me, how I feel sets the tone for how I look.”

Susan Cummings, LE

“It is difficult to select a “favorite treatment” when I have access to so many amazing tools & products.

My goal is to always to keep your skincare simple while delivering high performing clincal results. It is important to note that the key to all collagen stimulation procedures is always timing and consistency.”

Tamsen Tyler, LE

“One of my favorite treatments to perform is the combination therapies of Mesoneedling with a blend of Rejuran & micro-Botox. This powerful trio works synergistically to regenerate the skin at many levels. Mesoneedling creates controlled micro-injuries to stimulate collagen production, while Rejuran, rich in salmon DNA polynucleotides deeply repairs and restores skin elasticity. Micro-Botox works to smooth fine lines and tightens pores without freezing facial expressions, giving you a natural, refreshed and radiant look. The result is healthier, firmer, more youthful skin with improved texture, hydration and an overall glow.”

Kelli Kleckner, RN

“I like anything that proves to be regenerative. Collagen building biostimulars like Sculptra, hyperdilute Radiesse and even our newest addition, Rejuran can be used early in the aesthetic journey for prevention and maintenance to later on in life for more global restoration.”

Jacqueline Ayala, LE

“My skincare philosophy is prioritizing client well-being and tailoring treatments to individual needs and skin types. My favorite treatments include dermaplaning once a month to allow skin care and facial treatments to penetrate much better, and micro-needling with a customized skin booster to induce new collagen production while simultaneouslyaddressing specific concerns such as dull skin or unwanted pigment.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN

RIA HOBAN

was born and raised in the Philippines, where she spent most of her childhood at her family’s resort in Boracay Island. Her grandmother’s family, the Tirols, repurposed the island’s focus from copra (coconut oil) production and farming to tourism when they built resorts that were all initially run on generators. Ria’s father opened the island’s first food and beverage establishment, a quaint overwater bar called Sharks. Boracay is a special place to Ria. She and her husband and married there in 2011, the same year that Condé Nast and Travel and Leisure named it one of the best islands in the world. Speaking of this special place, Ria says, “For many of my friends who flew in from the US, it was their first introduction to Asia. Some of my best memories were created there, and most importantly, this is where I spent most of my time with my grandmother who was the matriarch of our family who recently passed away. It’s because of her, and early exposure to constant international guests, that I developed an appreciation of diversity in dress, thought, and culture.” She adds, “These early interactions were my first insight into different cultures, and I found it all so magical. Experiencing something new always sends the heart aflutter. I think this is why we all connect travel with wonder.”

College led Ria to a pre-medicine path along the shores of Lake Michigan. She graduated from the Loyola University of Chicago with a B.S. in Psychology, and Minors in Biology and Economics, learning along the way that following in her mother’s physician footsteps was not her calling. . She spent her senior year as a research assistant at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine studying the causes of epileptic attacks and became fascinated with applying data to rethink new realities to drive better outcomes. “I loved research, but I yearned for less lab time and more face-to-face interactions and looking at how innovation can improve the way we work and live,” Ria says.

Following graduation, Accenture offered a career in consulting and an opportunity in Singapore to lead the growth of the Southeast Asia market. The family grew as the business did, as Ria and her husband welcomed four children, now 12, 11, 9 and 5 years old, during their 10+ year tenure on the island.

Singapore was the ideal jumping off point to explore Asia Pacific and Australia. Ria reminisces, “The roads of Margaret River, Western Australia are so picturesque in the Spring and offer a beautiful landscape of both surf town and wine country. We would travel with other families and rent houses on the beach cliffs and host nightly dinners and embark on wine and culinary tours. Other trips included villa stays in Bali, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and the Philippines. There’s nothing like the magic that a tropical golden hour presents.”

Three years ago, the family relocated to Hinsdale on the recommendation of a friend from Singapore who had made the move. The Hoban family is right at home here. Ria says, “I feel so supported here, and am amazed by the caliber of people in this little bubble. It’s a town of high achievers and I continue to be inspired to meaningfully contribute and build a community that fosters learning and giving for our children.”

She proudly carries on her family’s tradition of service. “My grandmother devoted her life to service as President of Zonta and the Girl Scouts in the Philippines South, and my father was President of the Rotary in his district so being involved in the community has always been in my DNA. While in Singapore, I served on the Board of the American Association of Singapore as Treasurer, the Membership Committee of the American Club of Singapore, and was a founding member of 1880, an international members club that is continuously expanding globally. Here, I am a member of the Hinsdale Historical Society, the Soho House, the Infant Welfare Society, an associate of the Hinsdale Junior Women’s Club, and several Women in Data associations.”

Illinois’ New Child Support Rules on Imputed Income

On January 1, 2025, Illinois implemented significant changes to the Child Support statute, specifically addressing how courts may impute income to a parent in child support cases. We anticipate that these changes will provide more clarity, consistency, and fairness when one parent is purposely not making money to avoid their child support obligation.

Imputation of income is a tool courts use when one parent is not earning income consistent with their earning potential. In other words, if a parent is choosing not to work or working below their ability, the court may assign them an income figure based on what they could be earning—not what they are actually earning. Before 2025, the law left much discretion to judges without a clear structure for how to calculate that under-earning party’s potential income. e recent amendments now require courts to conduct an evidentiary hearing that includes a detailed analysis of specific statutory factors when determining a parent’s potential income. ese factors include the parent’s assets and whether they own substantial non-income producing assets. e court must also consider the parent’s residence, employment and earning history, job skills, educational attainment, literacy, age, health, criminal record and any other employment barriers, along with a record of whether the parent has been seeking work. Beyond those personal factors, the court must look at the local job market, the availability of local employers willing to hire the parent, prevailing earning levels in the community, and any other relevant background information in the case. If, after weighing these factors, the court cannot reasonably determine a parent’s potential income, the statute provides a fallback—a rebuttable presumption that the parent’s potential income is 75% of the federal poverty level for a single person ($15,650). Another important clarification in the 2025 law is that incarceration is not considered voluntary unemployment and cannot be used as a basis for imputing income.

A central feature of these new statutory changes is the requirement of an evidentiary hearing. e statute now makes it mandatory that courts hold an evidentiary hearing before they impute income, unless both parties agree otherwise. e court must make specific written findings identifying which statutory factors it relied on in reaching its decision. is is a significant shift, as it ensures that imputation of income is no longer based on argument, incomplete information, or guesswork, but rather on facts presented in court.

For parties facing allegations of voluntary unemployment or underemployment, this change raises the stakes. e party seeking to impute income must now come to court prepared to present detailed evidence. is may include proof of the other parent’s past employment and earnings history, their job skills, certifications, educational attainment, and efforts—or lack thereof—to find suitable employment. Health records, criminal records, or other employment barriers may also be relevant. Courts may consider expert testimony from vocational evaluators who can assess a parent’s true earning potential.

e 2025 amendments to the Illinois Child Support statute mark a major step forward in ensuring that child support determinations are based on both parents’ incomes and are grounded in fairness and facts. e law now requires courts to take a thoughtful, evidence-based approach when deciding whether to impute income and how much. By clearly identifying the factors courts must consider and requiring an evidentiary hearing with written findings, Illinois is making sure that child support orders reflect each parent’s actual ability to contribute.

Before running toward an evidentiary hearing, make sure to calculate the amount at stake and determine if the benefit of higher child support justifies the cost of the evidentiary hearing. In some cases, a settlement will be more cost effective overall.

Transformed

Closets

Ashley Murphy speaks with the quiet confidence of a woman who inadvertently pioneered an industry of Instagram-worthy interiors. She is, after all, the co-founder of Neat Method, a luxury home organizing company with 100 franchises across North America. "I was that kid who rearranged furniture for fun," Murphy reflects. "I moved my bedroom around weekly, and my parents would get so mad. Now I laugh about it; all the telltale signs were there."

ose childhood impulses have manifested into a multimilliondollar empire that has transformed what it means to be organized. Neat Method, which recently published e Neat Method Organizing Recipe Book, offers stepby-step guidance for those seeking the kind of pristine spaces Murphy's team creates for clients who have included celebrities like Kate Hudson.

Murphy's journey to entrepreneurial success follows an unexpected path. Growing up in a small, blue-collar town near Columbus, Ohio, she studied Apparel Merchandising at Indiana University before landing in Chicago. After a brief stint as an assistant buyer for a maternity brand—"not a great experience"—she pivoted dramatically, returning to school for personal training certification.

"It reminds me of you as a kid," the friend told her, recalling how Murphy would organize closets as a pastime.

e idea crystallized during her personal training sessions. "I thought to myself, it's a little hard to be healthy in your body if you're not healthy within your home," Murphy explains. She began organizing her clients' spaces alongside their workouts, creating more functional kitchens and living areas that complemented their wellness journeys.

Ashley’s

mudroom ensures speedy exits any time of day

For six years, Murphy built a successful in-home personal training business until the 2008 recession prompted another reinvention. When a family friend mentioned having professional organizers transform her closet after a move, the seed was planted.

en came another twist: a move to San Francisco for her husband's job. Within days of arrival, Murphy met another Chicago transplant with similar aspirations. "She's like, 'I'm thinking of going into closet organizing,'" Murphy recalls. "I

“...it's a little hard to be healthy in your body if you're not healthy within your home.”

was like, 'What? is is crazy!'" e serendipitous encounter led to a partnership that would revolutionize the industry. eir approach was novel: rather than coaching clients through the organization process, they would

transform spaces completely, often while clients were away. "You go to work for the day, you go away for the weekend, and we're going to bring our team in and transform your space," Murphy explains of their concept.

What began as a passion project quickly snowballed. Not only did clients keep calling, but aspiring organizers started reaching out, asking to learn their methods. Two years later, they had created a franchise model that would eventually grow to 100 locations.

Today, from her Hinsdale home where she lives with her husband and two sons, ages 10 and 12, Murphy oversees a sprawling organizational empire that includes an exclusive product line carried by Crate and Barrel, Food 52, and Bloomingdale's. e recent publication of their organizing recipe book represents another milestone, documenting the methods that have made the company a household name among the design-conscious set.

Murphy maintains the disciplined routine of someone who has built order into every aspect of her life. Rising at 5 a.m. without an alarm—"even on weekends"—she begins each day with electrolyte water, black coffee, and meditation before tackling creative work in the quiet early morning hours. A 9 a.m. workout precedes a day filled with Zoom meetings, connecting with franchise owners and partnerships across the country.

e business has not been without challenges. Six years ago, Murphy and her partner sold Neat Method to a product manufacturing company based in Memphis. After five years, the

partnership hadn't delivered the expected value, and in a bold move, they bought back the business. "We sold Neat Method when it was an infant, and we got it back as an unruly teenager," Murphy says. "It's been quite the two years of cleanup."

Murphy reveals one critical insight about home organization that might surprise many: " e most common theme we see is people not having any systems. People will be inspired to buy products, but the reality is they buy the product without actually doing the organizing first." is fundamental misconception—that containers create order, rather than systematic organization determining the containers needed—underpins Neat Method's entire philosophy.

As our interview concludes, Murphy mentions the Special Spaces initiative, organizing bedrooms for children battling cancer, revealing the heart behind the meticulous aesthetics. For all the celebrity clients and glamorous homes her company has transformed, Murphy seems most energized when discussing how order can bring peace in chaotic circumstances.

In an age of maximalism and accumulation, Murphy has built her life and business around the opposite principle: that less, arranged with intention, offers something deeply valuable—not just visual harmony, but the mental clarity that comes with it.

Brittany Hizer leads the ultimate mompreneur life, making daily outings and big trips better for babies and their families as COO of Pluie

If you’ve clocked any cardio time in the past 15 or so years, thank Brittany Hizer for making the experience more connected, safer, and as enjoyable as it can be. Brittany, a product development star, designed premium treadmills, cross-trainers and exercise bikes found in health clubs and fitness centers around the world. After graduating from the Kellogg School of Management, she pivoted from fitness to fishing and was the president of Crestliner Boats.

After leaving her successful career in the corporate world, Brittany was introduced to Addie Guntry, a cookbook author and food and beverage designer who has written for Martha Stewart Living and appeared on the Food Network

Addie had a patented idea for a better changing table. Once these two powerhouse women met, they began prototyping, developing product plans, and introducing business owners and operators to the idea of a better changing table.

“We had both had terrible experiences trying to change our babies in public restrooms.”

“We had both had terrible experiences trying to change our babies in public restrooms. With the

increased focus that 2020 brought to the importance of protecting families from germs, we threw ourselves into changing the table,” Hizer says.

Pluie is the world’s first and only self-sanitizing diaper changing table. Close it after use and two UV-C lights go to work eliminating 99.9% of bacteria and viruses in just one minute. Cleanliness is paramount, but Pluie goes beyond sanitation to consider baby and caregiver. A large surface, easy open design, and retractable security strap enhance the experience of using the table. ese product development pros considered every detail.

It's not easy to upend a category that has had a single supplier for 40 years, but Pluie is well on its way.

IWS Family Health Center, which many area women support through various chapters of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary, installed the very first Pluie changing table. Clients of the center love that their babies are safe and secure.

Today, Pluie tables are found in the Starbucks at Washington Street and Hinsdale Avenue in Hinsdale, the Indianapolis International Airport, and Guaranteed Rate Field.

Brittany and Addie appeared on an episode of Shark Tank in 2023.

“It was an incredible experience. You film not knowing if your segment will ever air.

ey shoot about 150 segments and then 90 air. We found out about two weeks before our original air date that our segment was a part of the season,” Hizer shares. e five sharks passed on investing, but the phone rings and the emails ding every time the episode re-airs and those who design shopping centers, amusement parks, and restaurants see the vision and the value of having safer, more comfortable changing tables in their men’s and women’s restrooms.

at’s not the brand’s only television appearance either. Pluie was an answer on the quiz show Jeopardy!

Also in 2023, Pluie introduced a consumer product, e Pluie Pret Changing Clutch. is compact, stylish, and machine-

washable diaper changing mat is made for modern parents and caregivers who expect the best while on-the-go. With a contemporary mom-inspired design that uses handcrafted neoprene-like material, Pret is soft, durable, and easily cared for, providing babies a cleaner and more comfortable changing experience than other mats on the market.

“We’re not a one product brand. We’ve always planned for a full range of products, consumer as well as commercial and e Pret was a great way to enter the market. It’s a little piece of Pluie,” Hizer says, adding, “We first partnered with e Beaufort Bonnet Company and have since collaborated with Clover Baby & Kids.” e latest launch is the Pluie Teether, made with soft silicone and natural birch wood.

Brittany’s days are filled with venture capital meetings, product iterations, and customer meetings. She moved to Hinsdale from Chicago with her husband and son two years ago and whole family is thriving in the community. “It’s so nice to each have a proper office, we love our neighborhood and the schools are great,” Hizer

says. e Community House has been a great resource for family fun, as has the Hinsdale Public Library. is busy entrepreneur can be spotted at Toni’s Patisserie and FedEx in Hinsdale or checking in on Pluie Pret sales at Little Charm in La Grange.

She takes full advantage of opportunities to connect with other professionals in the area. “I’ve met so many female founders here in Hinsdale. It’s inspiring how many women and men here are changing industries and working to make life better for people.”

Like the leader she is, Brittany is also instrumental in mentoring the next generation. “Last summer both of our interns were graduates of Hinsdale Central. ey did a phenomenal job, and I hope they learned a lot,” Hizer says.

Going from corporate life to the heavy lift of a start-up, especially a product-driven new concept, can’t be easy, but this kind and gracious woman makes it look as though it is. What a joy it is to have this mompreneur innovating among us.

All the Light We Cannot See

The only thing more enchanting than the shadowy ambiance and pan-Asian o erings at Leilani Asian Fusion in Aurora is the tragic yet inspiring story that inspired its creation.

We are sitting at a candle-lit four-top, on the Sunday of Valentine’s Day weekend, in one of the sleekest restaurants in the western suburbs. It’s 4:30 p.m., arguably the least romantic time to book a dinner with your amour. Yet three-quarters of Leilani Asian Fusion’s low-slung seats and chiaroscuro-lit booths in Aurora are filled with earlybird Romeos and Juliets. ey are doing what all love birds always

Beef Korean dumplings
A three-panel mural by Jenny Vyas

DINN ER DATE

do at Leilani: ey’re sharing hushed exchanges and nibbling away at platters of gochujang-glazed Korean Chicken wings, lemongrass shrimp and teriyaki-glazed Scottish salmon.

Most of us are also sipping luminescent cocktails—pale-white wasabi-lychee martinis and lilac-tinted elderflower prosecco spritzes—which glow as if they were spiked with the nectar of some biofluorescent wildflowers from James Cameron’s Avatar

It’s undeniably dark in here. Shadows stretch and purl into every corner of Leilani’s dining room. e dominant color is velvet black, an inky darkness softened by honeyed gold accents and vivid bursts of Manga-like artwork and shocks of vermillion on the walls.

Step inside and you’ll be greeted by a three-panel mural by Jenny Vyas, which depicts katana-wielding female warriors, soaring through a fantasia of ochre-colored clouds and smoky fire, their skirts rippling like battle flags. Keep moving forward, into the darkness, past Leilani’s cocktail lounge where head bartender Marshon Crowder holds court, into the bustling nexus of the restaurant.

Here you’ll see rows of crimson-colored silk lanterns, tear-shaped and tassled, dangling in perfect symmetry. Along one wall is a procession of booths, each bathed in soft light from cantilevered library lamps. Further back, another surprise: a spindly black tree rising up from the restaurant’s dark floorboards. It bears no faux leaves, only dozens of red ribbons tied around its branches, a Chinese tradition meant to communicate good luck, happiness, and prosperity. Written in the ribbons are verses to a poem, which has special meaning to owner Abigail Kemph, more proof that love isn’t just in the air, it’s embedded inside every square inch of the restaurant.

So yes, Leilani is a date-night destination par excellence, even if it’s as expansive as a Russian circus tent. A third of

Leilani’s first-floor dining room is devoted to executive chef Garnett Chavez’s open kitchen. With that much room to simmer, sauté and steam, he’s built a pan-Asian menu that draws inspiration from most of the continent, including Japan, Korea, China and the Philippines.

If you’re in the mood for sushi, you can chopstick your way through plenty of maki, each bearing unique culinary gifts. e fire in Leilani’s salmon-tuna “dragon breath” roll, for example, is a California-inspired Fresno chile relish, while its surf-n-turf roll pairs snow crab with tru ffle-oil steak. at same adventurous spirit carries over to the house’s dumplings. Rather than crimped quenelles of mashed chicken or minced veggies, Leilani’s beef dumplings taste more like tiny bundles of Korean galbi. ey deliver sharp blasts of brown sugar, garlic, onion and short rib and are as intensely flavored as any soup dumpling this side of Changzhou.

Yet great dumplings and solid steaks—try the skirt steak dressed in a ai-basil chimichurri—do not a complete menu make. What makes Leilani’s menu so memorable is its commitment to serving homespun Filipino dishes.

Fried rice prepared by unskilled hands can be a tired cliché. It’ll cost you 20 bucks at a sit-down restaurant, yet rarely eclipses what you’d find in a pagoda-stamped take-out container. Not so here. Leilani’s fried rice is a revelation. It tastes as if it was slowly reduced, ladle after ladle, in a miso broth. It’s every bit as rich as a risotto from Milan, yet it’s

Filipino-style pork adobo

DINNER DATE

the addition of Filipino-style pork that elevates the dish to an entirely di fferent level of yum.

I urge you to order every Filipino-centric special on the menu. I love what Chef Chavez has done with traditional puluton staples, i.e., simple bar nibbles and snacks often paired with beer and spirits. Kinilaw, Filipino-style ceviche, hasn’t gone mainstream quite yet. But Leilani’s version could reverse that trend. in slices of hamachi are cured in calamansi vinegar and set in a milky white coconut cream—thick as yogurt but deceptively smooth and sweet. Tiny red dribbles of rayu chili oil are then dappled atop the seafood—fire meets sea—in much the way heat-seekers drizzle sriracha sauce atop bowls of fresh ahi tuna.

And I highly recommend Leilani’s take on a traditional Filipino-style pork adobo: grilled slices of robata-fired pork belly dressed in a leek puree and paired with caramelized carrots. Imagine a Southeast Asian porchetta, which swaps out fennel for roasted onions.

e most impressive element of Leilani, however, is its origin story. e restaurant honors Kemph’s relationship with her late partner, Jason Morales. Together the duo opened up multiple restaurants, including locations of Mora, a sushi-robata concept. en, as was true for so many families, the Covid epidemic upended their lives. In January 2022, Morales passed away after a debilitating bout with Covid, not only shattering Kemph’s life but forcing her to make a di fficult decision: Should she move ahead with this sprawling and undeniably ambitious new venture in Aurora, or step away and sidestep the stress?

After much deliberation, she opted to continue the journey that she and Morales started, ultimately naming the restaurant after their daughter, Leilani Sonia Morales. ere’s a touching black-and-white portrait of the trio in the restaurant, bordered by a bright yellow frame, which speaks volumes.

If you want to know why so much time, energy and expense were poured into ensuring Leilani looks and tastes so delectable, consider how much love and attention you would devote to a restaurant built in honor of your young daughter and late partner.

Which is why the most-impressive sight at Leilani wasn’t a dish or a piece of art. It was a raven-black wall threaded, like marble, with thin veins of gold. I don’t know if this was intentional, but that wall reminded me of the Japanese tradition of kintsugi, where broken shards of pottery are reassembled with a mortar made with bits of gold.

I’ve always been enamored by the rich symbolism of kintsugi, which refuses to conceal the cracks that shattered physical objects but chooses instead to highlight them, sealing the fissures with precious metals.

If Leilani, like kintsugi, teaches us a lesson, it’s that precious things can shatter. Great loves can be taken from us. Family structures can crack in unexpected ways. e challenge, of course, is to do find a way to do something positive after those breaks occur. Kemph su ffered a devastating loss, but she replaced her pain with something beautiful by building a restaurant that quite literally glows in the dark.

A tragic story? Perhaps, but one that’s tragically romantic as well, one that’s produced a restaurant that’s filled it with unexpected pockets of light, hope and more than one course of pure, uncut culinary joy.

Leilani Asian Fusion is located at 2 N River Street in Aurora. Call 331.300.2919 or visit leilaniasianfusion.com

Cocktails

Descend down the restaurant’s main stairwell and you’ll be greeted by two giant white elephants. ey stand guard over Leilani’s Forbidden City, a stand-alone lounge offering sushi classes, rum tastings and other immersive activities. We’ll return to the Forbidden City in time, but fortunately for upstairs diners, the drinks on Leilani’s first-floor menu are beyond impressive.

Wasabi Lychee Martini:

Sugar always dances well with spice, but rarely do you see this classic pairing leverage lychee and wasabi. ey both wrestle for dominance in a vodka cocktail that includes a hint of elderflower liqueur. It’s a martini for non-martini drinkers.

Leilani Mai Tai:

In keeping with one of the motifs of the Leilani, their house Mai Tais lean more into the dark rums than white rums. is Mai Tai is a citrus bomb, due in part to an extra shot of lime juice and the inclusion of a welcome addition: orange bitters.

TURQUOISE PARADISE

A luxurious escape on the pristine shores in Turks & Caicos

Crystal clear water at The Somerset on Grace Bay

JOURNEYS

Stepping off the plane at Providenciales International Airport, I felt the warm Caribbean breeze instantly melt away the tension in my shoulders. After a seamless 15-minute drive from the airport, I arrived at e Somerset on Grace Bay—a boutique luxury resort that would become my sanctuary for the next blissful week.

As we pulled into the elegant entrance, I caught my first glimpse of what many travel magazines have long celebrated as one of the world's most beautiful beaches. Grace Bay's 12-mile stretch of powdery white sand and impossibly clear turquoise water seemed almost too perfect to be real. e Somerset, positioned on an idyllic section of this renowned beach, boasts just 53 luxury accommodations—creating an intimate atmosphere that larger resorts simply cannot match.

My Villa revealed itself to be the perfect vantage point to appreciate this slice of paradise. At 2,100 square feet with three private balconies overlooking both the resort's stunning pools and the breathtaking beach beyond, I knew immediately I'd

found something special. e villa combined traditional and modern design elements with a soothing color palette accented by pops of sea-green that perfectly echoed the waters outside.

Inside, the twobedroom, two-and-ahalf bath villa offered generous living space that opened to the main balcony—an extension of the indoor living area where I found myself spending most mornings with coffee in hand, mesmerized by the panoramic views. e main bedroom featured a sumptuous king-sized bed, ample sitting area, and an en-suite bathroom that rivaled luxury spas with its marble tiles, mahogany cabinets, rain shower, and deep soaking tub.

e fully equipped gourmet kitchen boasted Viking appliances, granite countertops, and every imaginable cooking tool—though I'll admit I used it primarily for morning coffee and evening cocktails rather than extensive meal preparation. e resort offers a pre-arrival grocery stocking service, a thoughtful touch that allows your vacation to begin the moment you arrive.

My daily rhythm quickly fell into a pattern that I can only describe as blissful simplicity. Mornings began with yoga on the beach, the gentle sound of waves providing the perfect soundtrack to start the day centered and present. Afternoons alternated between lounging by the infinity pool— which features custom recycled glass tiles from Spain that absorb sunlight and glow magnificently at night—and taking refreshing dips in Grace Bay's calm, shallow waters that stretch their blue and green

patterns remarkably far from shore.

e Somerset offers complimentary water sports equipment, and I couldn't resist trying the clear kayaks that allowed me to peer directly into the underwater world below. I paddled along the shoreline one afternoon, scanning for a glimpse of Jojo, the famous local dolphin that frequents these waters. ough he remained elusive during my visit, the sta ff assured me he makes regular appearances for lucky guests.

For those seeking more adventurous pursuits, the resort's concierge can arrange half-day snorkeling excursions through Caicos Island Charters. My excursion took me first to vibrant reef locations teeming with colorful fish, stingrays, and even a few barracuda. Afterward, our captain navigated to Little Water Cay, a ffectionately known as Iguana Island. Here, I encountered the island's famous rock iguanas and enjoyed swimming on both the calm and wavier sides of this uninhabited paradise. e return journey, complete with rum punch and island music, deposited us directly back onto e Somerset's beach—a seamless experience from start to finish.

One of my most indulgent experiences was booking an in-villa ai massage through the resort's Teona Spa. Set up on my private balcony, the 50-minute treatment rivaled any I've experienced in ailand itself. e skilled technique and perfect pressure, combined with the soundtrack of crashing waves, created a state of relaxation I rarely achieve during massages. For those who prefer a more traditional setting, the spa offers two treatment rooms, though I can't imagine forgoing the outdoor experience.

Dining at e Somerset offers several delightful options. My favorite dinner experience was at Barbetta House, which serves

an exciting fusion of Southern Mediterranean and Caribbean flavors. e paella was exceptional—loaded with fresh seafood and infused with local spices. For a more casual a ffair, the weekly beach barbecue shouldn't be missed. Complete with a DJ, dancing, bonfire, and rum bar, it offers a perfect taste of island life.

e most memorable meal, however, was a private dinner arranged on the beach. As the sun set in a spectacular display of orange and pink, I dined barefoot with my toes in the sand. e

tender braised oxtail with island peas and rice was divine, but the grilled mahi-mahi with steamed rice and lemongrass coconut sauce was truly transcendent—the kind of dish that becomes a benchmark against which all future fish entrees will be measured.

For families, e Somerset offers the complimentary Caicos Kids Club for children ages 3-12, with two two-hour sessions Monday through Saturday. Activities include beach games, arts and crafts, shell collecting, sandcastle competitions, and treasure hunts. Evening sessions with movie nights give parents an opportunity for romantic dinners alone—a thoughtful balance that makes the resort suitable for both couples and families.

Beyond the expected amenities, e Somerset boasts the only regulation croquet lawn on Turks and Caicos, surrounded by tall coconut trees—adding a touch of refined sporting tradition to

the tropical setting. Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the large, well-equipped gym and steam room, while those seeking unique wellness experiences can try SUP yoga, taking their practice offshore for a challenging twist to traditional poses.

For guests who wish to explore beyond the resort, complimentary bikes provide an excellent way to venture into the surrounding area. e concierge can also arrange visits to nearby Half Moon Bay, one of the island's most picturesque and less crowded beaches, offering views that rival even Grace Bay's storied beauty.

On my final evening, I returned to my favorite balcony to watch one last sunset paint the sky in brilliant hues. Looking out over the infinity pool toward the endless shades of blue stretching to the horizon, I understood why e Somerset's repeat guest rate is so high. is isn't just accommodation; it's a carefully crafted experience that balances luxury with authenticity, activity with relaxation.

As reluctant as I was to leave this turquoise paradise, I departed with the certainty that I would return. Some places imprint themselves on your memory not just for their beauty, but for how they make you feel—and e Somerset on Grace Bay had made me feel completely at home in paradise.

Designing From Inside Out

Leslie Bowman, founder of

The Design Bar in Burr Ridge, reveals how a triggering life moment inspired her to rethink interior design from a health and wellness perspective.

WORDS BY SHERRY THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP STYLING BY THERESA

Click on the website for Burr Ridge-based e Design Bar and the first words you’ll see are: “Every home has a story. Let us help write yours.”

But founder and Design Director Leslie Bowman says a triggering event in her life about three years ago prompted her to expand that vision, and those stories, even further—going beyond the home itself to the health and wellbeing of the people who live there.

“I was sexually assaulted by someone I knew, no less,” says Bowman, explaining that the incident unleashed a lifetime of trauma that she had been repressing for decades. “ at’s when I realized I had PTSD, and it’s just been a journey for me ever since about trying to heal.”

It was a moment of many epiphanies, including how unsettled she felt in her own home, regardless of how beautiful it was. at turning point not only inspired her to pursue a Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology but also prompted her to change the paradigm of how she approaches each design project.

“I began thinking about what is it about a space that makes people feel comfortable or uncomfortable?,” she says. “I really started to dig into how my clients wanted to feel in their space. It was through this process that I began to understand that if I just asked people what their goals were for their life, the design fell into place.”

Soon, she was designing from the inside out—a more holistic approach that incorporates elements of nutrition, mental health, and life coaching.

“It’s about helping them live differently in an environment that

I also design,” says Bowman. “ at’s pretty much what I’m doing, taking what goes on inside your body and making it work for how you live,”

A recent project employed this new holistic paradigm to a whole house remodel for a Downers Grove family who wanted a space that reflects their health and wellness values. What’s especially remarkable about the project is that Bowman only met with the family six times to curate the design—a testament to her intuitive skills.

“I have an innate ability to just understand people,” she continues, adding that in addition to gutting the entire first floor, she did a full kitchen redesign. “I can make anything pretty. I ask clients to tell me what they hate so I can understand what they want.” is new paradigm and mindset marks an exciting new chapter in an already prolific career. With an M.A. in Interior Design and 15 years of experience, Bowman’s designs have earned national recognition in ELLE Decor, House Beautiful, and Good Housekeeping. She was also featured on HGTV’s Windy City Rehab.

It’s a transformation that is ongoing, personally and professionally.

“In the future, I anticipate that the blending of design and wellness will only deepen, with more clients seeking spaces that foster mental clarity, relaxation, and a sense of balance,” she adds. “Design will be less about aesthetics alone and more about creating environments that nurture the mind, body, and spirit.”

CONFIDENCE RESTORED; BEAUTY REDEFINED

Dr. Dino Mendez enhances patients’ natural beauty with expert surgical precision, helping them look and feel their best.
WORDS

hen it comes to meticulous surgical expertise, coupled with compassionate, personalized care, Dr. Dino Mendez is the trusted name in the Western Suburbs for restoring confidence. A double-board-certified plastic surgeon with nearly a decade of experience, he is deeply rooted in the community and widely respected for his commitment to excellence in cosmetic surgery.

Enhancing authentic beauty for each of his patients—with a focus on breast, tummy, and eyelid cosmetic surgery—he empowers them to look and feel their best, while delivering natural, proportionate results that leave patients feeling confident and rejuvenated.

His acclaim comes from his most transformative and popular procedure, the “Mommy Makeover.” is lifechanging surgery helps women who have undergone pregnancy achieve the shape and contour they desire when diet and exercise fall short. "A tummy tuck transforms the belly to look flatter and more athletic, enhancing one’s natural shapes and contours. Similarly, a breast augmentation or lift restores one’s fullness and shape, providing a more youthful look,” Dr. Mendez says. “Sometimes the term “Mommy Makeover” can be a misnomer, as several non-postpartum women also undergo these procedures— whether it’s a woman with smaller breasts that is interested in enhancing her fullness, or someone who has developed extra skin in her tummy from either aging or weight loss.” By restoring balance and proportion, his patients rediscover a sense of self-confidence, earning him a reputation for delivering exceptional results.

From the initial consultation, Dr. Mendez takes the time to listen to his patients’ concerns and goals, crafting a personalized surgical plan that aligns with their desires. Valuing open com-

munication and honesty, he ensures his patients have realistic expectations and feel empowered to undergo their transformation. “I treat each patient with dignity and respect, only recommending procedures that will make a meaningful difference in their quality of life and bring long-term satisfaction," he says.

e decision for surgery is something he and his patients make together. “Moving forward with surgery is a very personal decision for patients. ey need to feel comfortable and safe. I believe the foundation of this is honest communication and prioritizing patient safety to the highest regard throughout every part of the surgical experience.”

Dr. Mendez is also renowned for his expertise in reconstructive surgery, particularly for patients with skin cancer of the face and neck. “ is dual focus allows me to refine my skills and broaden my technical scope to face any surgical challenge that comes my way,” he says.

As an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Mendez continues to stay at the forefront of his field. He attends annual conferences and has contributed to numerous publications, ensuring that his patients benefit from the latest advancements in plastic surgery techniques and technology.

For Dr. Mendez, the greatest reward is seeing his patients regain their confidence and embrace a healthier, more vibrant version of themselves. His goal is to transform appearances and uplift spirits, one patient at a time.

BEST IN HOME CARE

WORDS BY SHERRY THOMAS

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY HOME HELPERS® HOME CARE OF HINSDALE

Brian Davis was attending a funeral in Milwaukee for the mother of his friend, Brad, about seven years ago when a very special woman in the audience was singled out in the crowd.

She wasn’t a family member or even a close friend. e woman was Brad’s mother’s lead caregiver—the person who may have bathed her, made sure she had healthy food to eat, and helped her age in place with dignity and grace.

It was an “a ha” moment for Davis, who had just acquired Hinsdale-based Home Helpers® Home Care from a couple in Western Springs.

“A light bulb went off in my head because that’s what this is really about,” he says. “It makes me emotional just thinking about it.”

Founded 20 years ago to serve Hinsdale and the western suburbs, Home Helpers® Home Care provides in-home care for seniors, individuals with disabilities or illness, or those recovering from injury or surgery.

Davis, who is supported in the business by his wife, Dominica, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, says the quality of their team of more than 100 compassionate caregivers and office staff is the secret to their success.

“We celebrated our 20th anniversary in April and our team just rated No. 1 in Illinois for caregiving and client satisfactions,” says Davis, who left his position as Chief Marketing Officer at Edward-Elmhurst Health to acquire the company.

However, there is a nuance to at-home care that he wasn’t quite expecting. It’s both personal and emotional.

“When Dominica and I took over Home Helpers® of Hinsdale, we knew that our team could make a difference in the community,” says Davis, explaining that in addition to serving as Senior Consultant, Dominica is a Social Worker at Hinsdale Middle School. “What we didn’t realize is that our caregivers would also

care for the parents of dozens of our friends and acquaintances. My mother-in-law is even a client. She loves her caregiver and says she ‘was sent by God.’”

While in-home care is available for those who are recovering from surgery or a short-term illness, it’s a resource most often utilized by families to provide extra care for an aging parent or someone who is suffering from chronic illness such as dementia or Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or heart or lung disease.

“Home care helps older adults age comfortably in place in the homes they love,” Davis explains, adding that sometimes that home is a senior living community. “Nine out of 10 seniors want to stay wherever they call home. ey don’t want to have to move if they can help it.”

is one-on-one care can include anything from assistance with bathing and dressing to medication reminders to meal preparation. In-home caregivers are also on standby for assistance with walking and fall prevention, as well as up to 24/7 care.

“All of these together help keep the senior healthier and out of the hospital,” he adds.

It can also be a game changer for families.

“Families become families again,” says Davis, explaining that if the children of an aging parent don’t have to bear all of the caregiving duties, it allows them to spend more quality time. “Instead, now they’re coming to hang out with Mom and Dad, tell stories, or take them to church. It’s a beautiful thing.”

SUNDAY-THURSDAY

NEGRONI: THE BITTER KISS OF ITALIAN SUMMER

Equal parts boldness, beauty, and bite—the Negroni is not her to make friends. It’s here to linger.

The Negroni is not sweet. It’s not shy. It’s the tailored suit of cocktails—cut sharp, Italian, and ever so slightly dangerous. Sip it like you’ve been places. Sip it like you’ve got stories to tell.

MAKES ONE INGREDIENTS

• 1 oz London Dry Gin

• 1 oz Campari

• 1 oz Sweet Vermouth

• Orange peel (for garnish)

METHOD

In a mixing glass filled with ice, stir all three spirits until chilled but not over-diluted—about 30 slow turns. Strain into a rocks glass over a single large cube or many rocks. Express an orange peel over the top, then drop it in like a calling card.
