AskConnie
Q: Connie, what makes fall in Barrington so special, and how does the season affect the local real estate market?
A: Fall in Barrington is truly magical. Our tree-lined streets transform into a painter’s palette of crimson, amber, and gold, and the air carries that crispness that makes you want to grab a cozy sweater and head outdoors. It’s a season filled with community traditions — from apple-picking and pumpkin farms to the cherished fall festivals and bonfires hosted in our neighborhoods. Families come together for hayrides, football games, and evenings spent around backyard fire pits, making memories that last a lifetime.
For those who love golf, the cooler days are perfect for one more round before winter sets in. Clubs like Wynstone, Biltmore, and Barrington Hills embrace the season with tournaments, harvest dinners, and gatherings that highlight not just the game, but the friendships built around it.
From a real estate perspective, fall is also an exciting time. Many buyers are eager to find a home before the holidays, and sellers benefit from showcasing their properties against a backdrop of beautiful fall landscaping. There’s something about a home with golden leaves
If you would like to discuss your unique real estate needs confidentially, you may call or text me
drifting across the lawn or a front porch dressed in mums and pumpkins that tugs at the heart.
The luxury market in Barrington remains strong, with discerning buyers still chasing lifestyle-driven neighborhoods that offer both privacy and community. Wynstone, in particular, continues to attract attention — after all, who wouldn’t want to say their backyard overlooks a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course? (Not a bad conversation starter at a dinner party!) Homes here range from elegant golf villas to grand estates, and fall is when they truly shine — fireplaces glowing, kitchens ready for holiday entertaining, and porches just begging for a pumpkin or two.
What I love most about fall here is the balance—it’s both vibrant and peaceful. It’s a season that reflects the essence of Barrington living: connection, beauty, and the warmth of community. Whether you’re enjoying a Sunday drive under the canopy of autumn colors, sipping cider by the lake, or opening your door to buyers who immediately feel “at home,” fall reminds us why this area is such a special place to live.
Experience isn’t expensive—it’s priceless.

BEERMANN LLP
Shana Vitek is an Equity Partner at Beermann LLP, the largest family law firm in the country. For more than 20 years, she has practiced divorce and family law exclusively. She handles a wide range of cases, including divorces for business owners, high-profile and high-net-worth clients. Vitek’s ability to handle any type of case has allowed her to become one of only a few attorneys in Illinois to be Board Certified in Family Trial Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and serves on the Board of Governors for the Illinois Chapter. “Every family is different, so each case that I handle needs an individualized approach,” she says. “All initial consultations include information about the alternatives to litigation and keeping the divorce process out of court.” In addition to being a litigator, Vitek is also a trained mediator, arbitrator, and collaborative attorney. If a case can be handled using a cooperative approach, that is her preferred process. “It is more respectful, allowing the parties to decide what is best for their family while maintaining confidentiality and keeping sensitive personal details out of the public record.” Vitek believes it is important to give back to the community. She is Chair of the Beermann LLP Family Law Clinic. In partnership with Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, this first of its kind family law clinic provides pro bono legal services to individuals going through domestic relations proceedings who could not otherwise afford legal representation. “We feel strongly about giving back to the community, and given the size of our firm, we are in a unique position to make a big difference for clients who would otherwise go unrepresented in family law matters,” says Vitek. KENZI SHIOKAVA, OPENING JUNE 2026
The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago will host Kenzi Shiokava, the first museum solo exhibition dedicated to sculptor Kenzi Shiokava. A second-generation Japanese Brazilian, the artist departed São Paulo in 1964—narrowly evading the military coup d’état—and relocated to Los Angeles. Surveying nearly 50 years of sculpture, this expansive exhibition reflects Shiokava’s career-long embrace of wood carving and assemblage. Comparing his practice to archeology, Shiokava excavated the spiritual potential and, in his words, “inner movement” of found materials, drawing inspiration from Japanese woodcarving, Afro-Brazilian religious rituals, and concepts of embodied rhythm. The show is anchored by a wide selection of large totems—described by the artist as “urban totems” and “shaman sta s”—which were meticulously carved from discarded pieces of wood.

REPAIR OR REPLACE
With time running out, homeowners need to get o the fence.
WORDS BY MITCH HURST PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY
CAHILL
With the signing of the Big, Beautiful Bill, the generous tax incentives homeowners replacing the HVAC systems have historically enjoyed will be gone January 1, 2026.
Until the end of the calendar year, homeowners can receive about $5,500 in rebates and other incentives when replacing their existing units with new quieter, efficient HVAC units built with new technology that reduces negative environmental impact and are lighter on the pocketbook when the monthly utility bills arrive.
“If your equipment is towards the end of its life, without a doubt, replace it before the end of the year,” Brandon Delfino, co-owner of Cahill Heating, Cooling, Electric, Plumbing & Sewer in Palatine and Lake Bluff, says. “ e federal tax credits are gone January 1, but installations completed prior to that date still qualify.”
Lifespans of units vary, but generally after 15 or 20 years it’s a good time for homeowners to refresh, especially if they already are investing significantly in repairs.
Delfino and his team of technicians have decades of HVAC installation and repair experience; they’ve earned the trust of long-time customers who count on Cahill to provide the very best advice to keep their houses warm in the winter and cool during the summer.
“Everything is repairable,” Delfino says, but homeowners may want to look hard at if it’s more cost effective to purchase a new unit. at may sound counterintuitive, but there are four factors that make new, more efficient and quieter units an attractive option:
• Federal tax credits
• Utility company rebates (ComEd and North Shore /Nicor Gas)
• Manufacturer instant rebates
• Lower monthly utility costs e technology in the units has also greatly improved
over the decades. Most units today are multi-stage or fully variable systems meaning they only output the exact amount of heating or cooling required to keep your home comfortable. ey’re quiet, energy efficient and do a phenomenal job at removing humidity. It is these newer, more efficient units for which the government and utility companies are providing incentives.
“As you go up the line and become more efficient, the rebates and incentives get higher,” says Delfino. “We’re experts at designing systems that maximize the available incentives so that our customers get top of the line equipment for less money than the bargain stuff.”
Delfino’s team at Cahill currently services more than 5,000 residential and commercial customers throughout the Northwest Suburbs. A key value for the company is building relationships with the local customers they work for and aiming for those relationships to be long-term. Customer loyalty is a primary objective and that’s achieved partly by being a member of the local community at a time when the HVAC industry is going through consolidation and becoming less personal.
“Cahill was founded nearly 50 years ago by Dennis Cahill, and I’ve continued to run it,” Delfino says. “Dennis is an employee now. He’s here every day.”

STEVE NAPLETON AUTO GROUP BETS BIG ON PALATINE WITH TWO NEW ACQUISITIONS
The Napleton name is becoming harder to miss in Palatine. With the recent acquisition of Hyundai of Palatine and Chevrolet of Palatine from AutoCanada, Steve Napleton Auto Group has planted an even firmer flag in the northwest suburbs. e two stores, now operating as Napleton Palatine Hyundai and Napleton Palatine Chevrolet, bring the group’s Chicago-area footprint to 11 dealerships — four of them in Palatine. e move comes at a time of shifting ownership in the auto industry. AutoCanada announced earlier this summer it would divest 13 U.S. dealerships as part of a retreat from the stateside market.
For Napleton, the opposite is true: e family-run group is doubling down on its home turf, betting on a community it has served for nearly a century.
“Palatine is a community we know and love,” said Kevin Kysiak, dealer principal of Napleton Palatine Chevrolet,
Napleton Palatine Hyundai, and Napleton’s Schaumburg Buick GMC. “Hyundai and Chevrolet are both fantastic brands, with products that our customers demand.”
e additions give Napleton customers a wider range of options — everything from Hyundai’s fast-growing lineup of EVs and hybrids to Chevrolet’s lineup of trucks, SUVs and American classics. More than just inventory, though, the expansion underscores the group’s long-standing strategy: Stay local, build trust and grow where relationships already run deep.
For Palatine, it means the town isn’t just getting new signs on familiar showrooms — it’s becoming the centerpiece of one of Chicago’s most enduring auto families.

BIG DREAMS, BARRINGTON ROOTS
U.S. Marine Jackson Perkins Is Quietly Making His Way Toward Country Music Stardom.
WORDS BY TRICIA DESPRES
PHOTOGRAPHY BY
KATRINA WITTKAMP
STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
Jackson Perkins first made a name for himself on the football fields and basketball courts of Barrington High School. But these days, it’s the name he’s making on some of country music’s biggest stages that just might become his greatest legacy.
“I’ve always wanted to be a country singer,” says the United States Marine Corps Captain currently based in Washington, D.C. “It’s always been part of my plan.”
But that plan fast-forwarded last July, when Perkins stepped onstage at Chicago’s Windy City Smokeout and traded meaningful verses and wide smiles with country superstar Riley Green.
“It was so cool being up on that stage,” explains Perkins, who had met Green just weeks before at the 2025 Folds of Honor Rock ‘N Jock Celebrity Softball game in Nashville. “I was locking eyes with people, and they were sobbing, which is a crazy feeling.”
Indeed, many tears were shed as Perkins stepped on stage in his Marine Dress D uniform to duet with Green on the already emotional Jamey Johnson hit “In Color.”
“When I was walking home and trying to get back to my hotel, people just kept coming up to me crying,” remembers Perkins, who also serves as a Military Liaison for CreatiVets, a nonprofit that helps veterans heal through creative expression. “And it wasn’t because of me––I think it just brought back memories of their grandfather, or father, or brother who was a Marine. Or it
was the words that they were hearing in the song. Music brings out emotion in us. I felt honored to be a part of it.”
e adoration continued the next day, when Perkins says he heard from many of his friends from his days back in Barrington. “My phone was off the hook,” he laughs. “It was funny because I was getting texts and pictures from people who were in the crowd. It was so cool that I was in Chicago.” Granted, Perkins can seem a tad uncomfortable with the attention of this viral moment––and for good reason.
“I’ve always wanted to be a country singer... It’s always been part of my plan.”
“One of the biggest things you need to remember as an infantry officer in the Marines is the mentality of ‘it’s not about me,’” Perkins says quietly. “I also have that same mindset with country music, and I’m drawn to people who embody that. When you make it about your band members, or you make it about the song, or most importantly, you
make it about the fans––that’s what makes the most successful country singer.”
Nevertheless, the talents Perkins displayed on that stage that July night, along with his total adoration for country music, can’t be understated.
“Growing up, I always remember that my parents would put on old country like George Jones and Charley Pride,” recalls
Perkins, who seems to be following in the footsteps of artists such as Elvis Presley and Zach Bryan, who served their country while balancing a music career. “I grew up loving country music.”
At 20 years old, while playing football at the United States Naval Academy, Perkins picked up the guitar for the first time and began learning more about the beauty that could come from its strings.
“Over the years, my buddies would poke fun at me because when I played my little gigs and stuff, I would always play old school country,” the former defensive end remembers.
“ ey would want to hear some more upbeat stuff, but I guess my love for the classics has paid off.”
So too has the hard work.
“People don’t see the years of work that it took to get up there on that stage,” he states.
“ ey don’t see you getting a vocal coach. ey don’t see you practicing in your room. And while I’ve loved doing my bar gigs and stuff, they haven’t seen me being all nervous up there in front of a crowd of 10 people at a bar. You’ve got to keep developing yourself all the time.”
And while he’s not entirely sure what comes next, Perkins knows what matters most.
“My obligation is to be a Marine, and I’m still super excited about doing my job every day,” says Perkins, whose parents now live in Fontana, Wisconsin. “But at the same time, I want to continue to develop my guitar playing and my vocals, and then hopefully just continue to write music.”
But he’s not about to rush it.
“I’m waiting to come out with a song that I’m really solid about,” he concludes. “I’ll know when the time is right.”

CLEAR VALUE, LASTING COMFORT
Local fabricator brings quality, e fficiency, and trust to every window installation
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CHICAGO WINDOW GUYS
Windows do more than frame the view.
ey define curb appeal, protect against Chicago’s harsh climate, and play a central role in energy efficiency. Replacing outdated or leaky windows can improve a home’s efficiency by up to 30 percent, cutting drafts and preventing mold. at’s where Chicago Window Guys (CWG) comes in.
Founded by Russell Armstrong, the company operates its own manufacturing plant in Chicago and brings decades of experience to every project. Having installed thousands of windows across the city and suburbs, Armstrong and his team know how to match the right product to each home’s needs.
“We offer the best product, with the best installation at the best price — guaranteed,” Armstrong says. “Because we manufacture here, we control costs and timelines, ensuring jobs are done on schedule and at a much lower cost than our competition, without sacrificing quality.”
CWG backs those promises with a price-match guaran-
tee and a lifetime warranty on all parts and labor, including glass breakage — rare in this industry. Armstrong adds: “We don’t play the ‘Buy one, get one free’ sales game. Our prices are straightforward and consistently lower for a better product and installation.”
CWG windows feature Argon/Krypton gas fills, multiple low-E coatings, foam-filled frames, and non-metal spacers to prevent seal failure. Every window is measured and made to order — from bow and bay to garden and projection styles. Installations are handled exclusively by CWG crews, never subcontractors.
Armstrong also makes every sales call himself, eliminating long presentations, commissions, and high-pressure tactics. “Over the years, we’ve built our reputation on happy customers who refer friends and family,” he says.

As a teenager growing up in the small rural town of Princeton, Illinois, Megan Taylor absorbed the music business through osmosis. Her dad worked for a subsidiary of Sony Records, placing CDs and merchandise in local retail shops throughout the Midwest. As a result, Taylor was the beneficiary of an endless stream of promotional albums, which she would spirit away to her bedroom for listening sessions.
“When I was a kid, I always had access to music,” she says. “And I was always the friend who made the playlists.”
Later, while double majoring in math and art at DePaul University, Taylor was exposed to house music, which immediately caught her ear and moved her emotionally. “House music spoke to my soul. For me, it’s a language that the body knows. It’s the music that moves the body.”
After college, Taylor began her career as an intern at Fig Media Inc.,

a boutique firm that books creatives including DJs. e founders, James and Michele Gustin, had built an established company known for cultivating sophisticated DJs and pioneering talent in an uncharted field. ey invited Taylor to join the team, mentored her, and gave her a long runway to emerge as a female DJ in a deeply male-dominated industry. eir guidance and support were–and continue to be–instrumental in her rise.
ese foundational experiences set the stage for Taylor’s emergence as one of the most sought-after DJs in Chicago. Her work includes events for the Chicago Cubs (including their World Series party), the WNBA, CHANEL, Nike, and Vogue. Recently, she deejayed a global business event for more than 4,000 people at Navy Pier. Her work also takes her outside of Chicago, and across the world for private events.
To operate at this level, it takes more than a playlist of banger tracks. As with any art, it’s impossible to pick out the secret ingredients that lead to success. But Taylor’s approach goes well beyond a passion for “digging” (locating tracks and unique remixes) and an encyclopedic knowledge of the songs making an impact on a global level. She strives to understand the people she’s working with and playing for. She has a master’s degree in social emotional intelligence, and a lot of her work involves meeting with her clients, talking about the music they love, what moves them, and helping them create the right mood for whatever event they are organizing–whether it’s a corporate launch party, gala, wedding, or special birthday party.
“My goal is always to have it feel like an event you’ve never
been to before,” she says. She takes pride in her ability to “paint a picture” with the music, to keep the crowd energized and engaged, and deliver events that will be remembered long after the lights come down and the dance floor is empty.
“I really look at everything as energy,” she says. “ ere are some people who can see colors. I can see the energy of the song.”
To help her produce and shape that energy, Taylor seeks out places to find a creative spark. Topping that list is Tulum, where she spent a lot of time during the pandemic after her business came to a complete stop. It’s a place to recharge, tap into the vibrant music culture, and open her ears to emerging music and trends.
“Mexico is a place where I feel vibrant, and it brings me into my heart. I have so much resonance there,” she says.
As it turned out, her business shutting down during COVID was a blessing in disguise. With live music events shuttered, Taylor got hired to run strategy for a book launch, which led to more engagements in creative strategy, producing retreats, and creating soundtracks for hotels and restaurants.
“I take corporate branding and translate that to music. Which is super fun,” she explains. Like the music itself, the pathways for Taylor just keep growing, morphing, and remixing. Whether she’s helping to launch a new product, perfecting a playlist for soon-to-be newlyweds, or running a healing music retreat, Taylor’s focus is the same. Using the power of music and human connection to transport, uplift, and forge connections.
“It’s frequency and vibrations, and it’s all really healing,” she says.
Reflecting on one of her recent events, Taylor captured her mission perfectly: “You play music that represents everyone, and then they all dance to it on the dance floor and they acknowledge each other. It’s an amazing thing. Magical things can happen. at makes me happy.”

Shopping should be an experience. Not a spectacle, not a show, but something special. And it’s about more than product; it’s about ambiance, attitude, anticipation. It’s an alchemy that’s not easy to achieve, but fashion retailers Lance Lawson and Jim Wetzel have mastered the magic. eir SPACE 519 in Chicago has long been the destination choice for style-savvy shoppers seeking the perfect piece—and having a good time while doing it. at’s about to get a whole lot easier, with the debut of SPACE 519 at
Wilmette’s newly refreshed Plaza del Lago.
“When we started SPACE 519, Jim and I had owned stores and been traveling and buying women’s designer clothing for almost a decade,” says Lawson. “On our European buying trips, we discovered so many things that excited us in categories like home, apothecary, and stationery and wanted to bring the idea of a small, curated department store to Chicago.” Known for sourcing the best from the likes of Jil Sander, KHAITE, Proenza Schouler, and om Browne, Lawson and Wetzel are now expanding their offerings, presenting hard-to-find collections such as New York-based Partow and Milan’s

SA SU PHI, importing the Fornasetti home collection, and debuting Dr. Few Skincare on the North Shore.
Lawson and Wetzel had been looking for a suitable North Shore location for years. Wetzel, born in Winnetka and raised in the northern suburbs, always had a fondness for Plaza del Lago, designed nearly a century ago by architect Edwin Hill Clark. “When WS Development—the company behind the redevelopment of the property—approached us three years ago, we felt an instant connection,” says Lawson. “ eir vision was inspiring, and we love seeing a vintage space brought back to life.”
e couple has been utterly hands-on in creating the new space, devising the floor plan, adding windows and enlarging an existing skylight, and custom designing fixtures and much of the furniture. “We have a trademark style we call ‘happy modern,’ where clean lines are softened by mid-century finds and warm wood,” shares Wetzel, whose career includes stints as design manager at Henri Bendel and store director at Gucci in Chicago. “For this location, we collaborated with Maggie Meiners on a statement art piece behind the cash wrap and with Paige Spearin on a North Shore-themed mural. at was an incredibly rewarding part of the process.”
Key to the SPACE 519 formula is the marriage of fashion and food and Barrington customers can look forward to multiple options here: e Lunchroom, a 50-seat, all-day, sit-down restaurant; e Lunchbox, for barista drinks, baked goods, and gourmet grab-andgo; and a new concept, e Lago Room, a stylish 40-seat European style café during the day and a chic spot for a late afternoon cocktail or early evening glass of wine. “We’ve been very inspired by the old school department stores like Marshall Field’s with its Walnut Room and Freds at Barneys,” relates Lawson. “We were inspired by places like Colette in Paris and 10 Corso Como in Milan, where operating a cafe makes a store even more of a destination. We added e Lunchroom downtown when we opened our current space on Chestnut Street in 2018, and our business has soared, largely because of the energy the cafe provides to the overall business. It is the secret sauce.”
“Some may come for the food and not shop; others may dine and grab stationery or a home item on their way out,” suggests Wetzel. “And we’ve seen many people come for a salad and leave with a new dress or pair of shoes. We really appreciate each and every customer and are truly excited to be a part of the community.”
And keep on the lookout for the soon-to-be opened storefront by Barrington native Cynthia Rowley in Plaza del Lago.

With a specialization in tax-efficient financial planning and investment management, Nieminski is dedicated to providing clients with strategies that maximize their financial wellbeing. Her approach focuses on personal connections—taking the time to truly understand her clients’ needs and communicate financial concepts in clear, jargon-free terms. is thoughtful, client-centered approach ensures that every financial decision is aligned with their goals and values.
How do you give back to your community or industry? I host local workshops for people going through divorce, bringing together a panel of amazing local women—top professionals in law, real estate, mortgage, therapy, and more—many of whom have been recognized in the Power Women series. Having gone through divorce myself, I’m really passionate about helping others feel empowered and informed during such a tough time. It also ties in with my work as an advisor and Certified Divorce Financial Analyst®. Our group is on a mission to change how divorce is experienced in America, and it’s a cause that’s really close to my heart.
How do you maintain balance between your professional and personal life? My life changed when I stopped chasing perfect balance between work and family. I realized it’s much more effective to fully dive into whatever needs my attention most in the moment—whether that’s business or home—instead of stressing about splitting time evenly. Trying to force balance only left me feeling like I wasn’t doing anything well. Now, I focus on being fully present wherever I am. is approach, which I call “Lean Into the Tilt,” is one of the concepts I explore in my upcoming book.
How do you de ne con dence—and how have you built it? Confidence isn’t about being fearless—it’s about trusting yourself enough to show up anyway. For me, it’s built through daily habits and pushing just a little outside my comfort zone, over and over. It starts every morning with a workout, setting the tone for the day ahead. Creating momentum is key—small wins early on make it easier to take bold steps later.

TOP-TIER REPRESENTATION
ALLYSON RUSSO launched Russo Law Offices LLC more than a decade ago to revolutionize estate planning and probate with top-tier, personalized representation. She earned a B.A. from Boston College, a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, and an LLM from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law—impressive credentials that set her up for success. With more than 25 years of experience practicing law at elite firms in Boston and Chicago and a boutique estate planning firm, Russo is regarded as a trusted expert. Today, she creates meticulous estate plans, wills, and trusts for clients ranging from individuals to businesses.
What’s a trend you’re embracing—or challenging? A trend I’m embracing is the use of AI to streamline research, drafting, and communication—making my legal practice more efficient and responsive. At the same time, I’m challenging the idea that technology can replace the trust, empathy, and personal connection my clients value most. I believe the future of law combines smart tools with genuine human relationships.
How do you maintain balance between your professional and personal life? I intentionally give myself permission to turn off the business-owner brain, even when it feels unnatural. I’ve learned to meet myself where I am in life—recognizing that balance looks different now than it did when my kids were younger. As they’ve become more independent, it’s created more space for me to recharge and be fully present in both work and home life.
How do you de ne con dence—and how have you built it? I define confidence as the quiet assurance that comes from years of experience, hard work, and continuous learning. It means trusting in my knowledge while also having the humility to recognize when I don’t know something—and the determination to find the right answer. I’ve built my confidence over time by showing up, solving problems, and never being afraid to ask the next question.
What’s one piece of advice you wish you’d received earlier in your career? I wish someone had told me earlier that it’s OK to be imperfect—as long as you’re always striving to grow, improve, and do right by your clients. Building a fulfilling career as a lawyer and business owner isn’t just about technical skill; it’s about investing in relationships, staying curious, and showing up consistently. Over time, I’ve learned that being well-rounded with an interesting life is just as important as being accomplished.

REDEFINING LUXURY
Razny Jewelers has been the leading family-owned and operated source for loose diamonds, bespoke jewelry, and Swiss timepieces in the greater Chicago area for more than 70 years. Today, INGRID RAZNY and CHRISTINE RAZNY-PORTER along with Ingrid’s husband, Stan, and their sons, Michael and Eric—continue that proud family legacy.
What excites you most about the future of your jewelry industry? Razny is expanding its collections to accommodate every budget, while offering customization options that allow each piece to reflect the wearer’s personality and style. Jewelry marks life’s milestones, from engagements to anniversaries, as well as the moments in between, becoming an integral part of one’s story. Many of these pieces are passed on as heirlooms, connecting generations through beauty and history.
What conversations are you passionate about bringing to the table? Why natural diamonds matter and clearing up misconceptions about lab-grown diamonds. Beyond their brilliance, natural diamonds carry a story of rarity, exclusivity, and responsible sourcing. For example, we work directly with trusted partners in Africa—utilizing alluvial mining, a sustainable method that supports local communities and minimizes heavy excavation. Labgrown production relies on non-renewable energy sources, and can damage the environment. Every Razny diamond is hand-selected for its proportions and brilliance, not just its carat weight, ensuring lasting beauty and value.
What’s a trend you’re embracing—or challenging? We’re redefining luxury service by giving our clients more than they expect, exceeding their expectations and creating moments that surprise and delight. We’re focused on thoughtful details, personalized touches, and unexpected gestures. We view every interaction as an opportunity to transform an ordinary visit into an extraordinary one, deepening relationships and continually raising the standard of service at Razny Jewelers.

HEALTH CARE IN BLOOM
DR. JESSICA MARABELLA is a board-certified family physician with more than a decade of experience, but what truly defines her is the passion she brings to building meaningful relationships with her patients. After graduating from the University of Central Florida and earning her medical degree from St. Matthew’s University, she completed her residency at Case Western University, where she also served as Chief Resident. For more than 10 years, Dr. Marabella has provided care that goes beyond symptoms. She believes in personalized, compassionate care and has spent more than seven of those years serving families in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago at Endeavor Health. Blossom Family Medicine was born from her desire to create a space where health care is collaborative and consistent—where patients feel truly seen, heard, and supported throughout every stage of life.
What excites you most about the future of your industry? I love seeing health care move back to what it was meant to be—a true relationship between doctor and patient. e trend toward personalized, concierge-style care gives me hope. It means more time to listen, to problem-solve, and to create plans that actually fit each person’s life.
What conversations are you passionate about bringing to the table? Oh, so many! But if I had to pick, I’d say metabolic health (obesity management) and women’s health. ese are topics that often get brushed aside in quick office visits, but they’re life-changing when addressed properly. I want people to know they don’t have to “just live with” weight struggles, fatigue, or hormone shifts. ere’s help—and there’s hope.
How do you give back to your community or industry? Education is my favorite way to give back. Whether it’s chatting with patients one-on-one, hosting a wellness talk, or sharing tips on social media, I love making health feel simple and doable for people.
What’s a trend you’re embracing— or challenging? I’m embracing the incredible results we’re seeing with GLP-1s for weight management— but I’m also challenging the narrative that they’re a magic fix. e truth is that these medications work best when combined with lifestyle changes. I also want to challenge the stigma around hormone replacement therapy. Women deserve informed, balanced conversations about their options instead of being told to just “ride it out.”

SELLING JOY
LAURIE KANE is a Notre Dame mechanical engineering grad with an MBA from DePaul who’s built a career around making things work better. She helped set up Motorola’s early cellular phone manufacturing lines, then started an automation company with her husband, focused on circuit board assembly. Kane later launched Treetime Christmas Creations, running both a Lake Barrington store and online business selling artificial Christmas trees and holiday décor.
What’s a trend you’re embracing—or challenging? While online shopping continues to reshape retail, we embrace both digital convenience and the irreplaceable magic of physical spaces. Our website serves customers nationwide, but our Lake Barrington store offers something no screen can replicate—an immersive, emotional experience that transforms shopping from a transaction into a treasured memory. We’re not just selling decorations; we’re selling joy, nostalgia, and the foundation for traditions that families will cherish for years to come. When customers step into our store, we want them transported from their everyday world into a realm of holiday wonder. Yet we understand our customers lead busy lives, so we focus on showcasing and teaching decorating solutions that are both stunning and achievable transformations that they can recreate in their own homes without stress or overwhelming time commitments.
What conversations are you passionate about bringing to the table? Many people today are interested in becoming entrepreneurs and frequently ask for my advice on how to accomplish this goal. I am passionate about this subject because in my experience, one of the biggest challenges when starting a company is managing the diverse requirements of running a business that extend far beyond your personal expertise. My advice is to pay attention throughout your career to how other departments function around you. Be genuinely curious—volunteer for cross-functional teams, ask colleagues about their processes, and observe how different aspects of the business interconnect. One day, you may find yourself responsible for tasks and decisions you never imagined tackling, and this broader understanding will prove invaluable.
What do you do to recharge? Yoga and fitness are my go-to for recharging. As a certified yoga teacher, I’m passionate about the connection between movement, breath, and mindfulness. ere’s something powerful about using the breath to anchor yourself in the present moment—it completely shifts my energy and perspective. Whether it’s flowing through poses or just focusing on deep breathing, it helps me reset and approach everything else with more clarity.

AI ENTREPRENEUR
ALIYAH KIZILBASH is an entrepreneur and tax lifestyle expert leveraging AI in a unique way to help business owners grow their income and homeowners save money so they can invest in what truly matters. With more than seven years of experience in tax consulting and client representation, she founded TaxBack— an AI-powered platform that simplifies property tax appeals and unlocks hidden value for both businesses and property owners. Kizilbash also hosts the Aliyah & Co. podcast and curates community events that turn complex topics like money, tech, and identity into empowering conversations. Her work bridges innovation, financial freedom, and personal growth, inspiring people to live their best lives, inside and out.
What excites you most about the future of your industry? AI is helping people reclaim their time and energy in ways we’ve never seen before, especially in industries like tax and finance where outdated systems have drained resources for years. But once we get that time back, the real question becomes... what are we doing with it? is moment gives us a chance to rethink how we work, live, and define success.
What conversations are you passionate about bringing to the table? I’m drawn to conversations that connect money, tech, and identity in real, human ways. ere’s a lot of confusion and noise out there, and people don’t always realize how much power they actually have. Whether it’s on my podcast or at an event, I try to create spaces where people can explore complex topics without feeling intimidated.
How do you de ne con dence and how have you built it? To me, confidence means being willing to move forward even when things feel uncertain. I’ve built it by doing things that made me uncomfortable, like starting a company, learning AI, or even getting on stage as a standup comedian. Every time I stepped into something new, I learned I could keep going, even without having all the answers. Confidence didn’t come from knowing exactly what to do. It came from showing up anyway.
What legacy do you hope to leave behind? I want people to realize how much power they already have. You can shift your mindset, your finances, your routines, and that can change your entire reality. Whether I’m helping someone save money through a tax appeal or sparking new insight on the podcast, I hope I help people reclaim agency over their own lives.

FEEDING THE WORLD B
arrington Children’s Charities (BCC) and its mission to positively impact the lives of children have always spoken to JESSICA HOFFMANN, who now serves as the nonprofit’s Director of Programming. “After volunteering for many years at BCC packing events, my husband I joined the Board of Directors,” explains Hoffmann. “Following COVID and our efforts to continue packing with limited resources, I moved into the role of coordinating our volunteers and packing program at Sunny Hill Elementary.” With the help of many behind-the-scenes hands, she and her team create weekly magic at their Packs of Plenty (POP) volunteer sessions at Sunny Hill Elementary. Hoffmann also serves as a Barrington Hills Village Trustee.
What excites you most about the future of your industry? Food insecurity is a real problem in the U.S., no matter what community you reside. I hope we are able to find ways to keep our children and students fed while they learn and grow their bodies.
What conversations are you passionate about bringing to the table? e inability for families to feed their children is becoming an epidemic. I love to brainstorm and converse with others in this space, about effective ways to feed those in our community who are struggling with food insecurity.
How do you give back to your community or industry? We pack every ursday during the school year to feed roughly 500 students each week in Barrington 220 schools. is last year, BCC also funded a new Essential Needs Pantry at Barrington High School. With the help of the PTO, we were able to realize a vision we’ve had to service our high school students more effectively. Not only does the pantry provide food to students, but also hygiene products and other essential needs. BCC also funds the 100 POPs that go out of Prairie Middle School through their Transitions Student program. ey provide POPs to Prairie students as well as our ELC friends. Lastly, we supply a small “pantry” at Station Middle School. We are very proud of realizing the goal of representing all the schools and students in the district.
How do you maintain balance between your professional and personal life? Service is a huge part of my life and the one thing that keeps me balanced.
What legacy do you hope to leave behind? Well-rounded, thoughtful, caring, and content kids. at would be by greatest legacy to leave behind.

CONCIERGE CARE
Chicago native DR. SOGOL JAHEDI founded Advanced Gynecology in 2011, based on a vision that in an industry headed toward Big Medicine, a solo doctor can provide exceptional, personalized care. A strong advocate for patient education, Dr. Jahedi gives her patients the personal care possible only in a small practice. A graduate of the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago, she is board certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and works on staff at Lutheran General Hospital. Dr. Jahedi and her husband, Dr. Jimenez, moved into their Barrington Village home right after they got married almost 20 years ago. ey love their neighborhood community, as do their children, who attend Station and Barrington High School.
What’s a trend you’re embracing—or challenging? Medicine has a long and storied history of an almost sacrosanct relationship between physician and patient. In the modern medical system, this important relationship has been disregarded in the race for corporate profit. Unfortunately for doctors and patients both, the corporate takeover of medicine has led to physician burnout and patient dissatisfaction with care. To buck this trend in our current time has been an uphill battle. I carry no clout with insurance companies as a small practice solo doc. I do not have the leverage of a large corporation or the deep pockets of private equity in negotiations. I am, however, able to maintain the independence to take care of my patients in a way that honors the physician-patient relationship. is sustains both of us, as it has for millennia, and it is enough.
What’s one piece of advice you wish you’d received earlier in your career? I had grown up internalizing the message that I could have it all. I wish that someone had told me that while that may be true, you cannot have it all at the same time. Every woman finds her own balance in this realm. ere are no wrong answers. But having it all—at once—is not likely realistic.
What conversations are you passionate about bringing to the table? I have spent the better part of the past few years immersed in menopause medicine. I am proud to keep my patients informed as an active member of the Menopause Society, with attendance at their lecture series and annual conferences. Menopause is having a moment, and I am passionate about teaching my patients what I learn.

LUXURY BRAND STORYTELLER
Born and raised in England, SHARMILA TAYLOR began her professional journey in London’s luxury beauty industry—managing accounts for iconic brands Christian Dior and Vivienne Westwood in some of the city’s busiest department stores. “ is experience sharpened my eye for detail and style, skills that now drive my photography,” explains Taylor, who has worked as a professional photographer for six years, specializing in personal branding photography at her northwest suburban Sharmila Taylor Photography studio. “I’m passionate about creating impactful imagery that helps professionals, entrepreneurs, and brands elevate their visual presence. My work is all about telling stories through headshots, editorial-style shoots, and brand visuals that resonate with your audience and drive results.” She also creates polished visuals for real estate teams, magazine editors, health and wellness coaches, actors, models, and a diverse range of business owners. “Whether you’re looking to enhance your brand or need a creative lead for larger projects, I bring passion, curiosity, and a commitment to excellence to every opportunity.”
What excites you most about the future of your industry? ere’s a growing appreciation for storytelling in branding, and a deeper understanding that it takes more than a headshot to truly connect with an audience. We live in an incredibly visual world, and people are curious. ey want to see the person behind the business and get a sense of what it might feel like to work with them. at sense of connection often drives engagement, and ultimately, buying decisions.
What conversations are you passionate about bringing to the table? One I care deeply about is the value of creative professionals as strategic partners, not just vendors. In my work, photography is rarely just about the photos. I take the time to get to know my clients, to understand their business, and to build a relationship that goes beyond a single session. Often, I become a sounding board, a supporter, and sometimes even a connector, sharing ideas or resources that I know will benefit their brand.
How do you maintain balance between your professional and personal life? For me, it starts with being intentional about how I spend my time and energy. I’ve learned to say “no” to projects that don’t feel like the right fit, and I focus on work that feels meaningful and creatively engaging.

ART OF LIFE
Growing up above a funeral home, SHEILA L. GABLER-MILLER learned from a very young age how fragile life can be. “I worked alongside my family in the funeral business, recently authoring a book about this titled Laid to Rest,” says Gabler-Miller, who also assists husband, Mike Miller, in his Barrington-based M.J. Miller Jewelers. “Later I pursued my path as an artist, painting crystal for Villeroy & Boch— having sold the Peace glass globally. Several of my art works are also part of the Vatican’s art collection.” It’s a talent that runs in the family. Gabler-Miller also promoted her father Matt Lamb’s artwork, opening Peace Museums of Art in America, Andorra, Argentina, England, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Pakistan, Slovakia, Spain, Russia, and the UAE, where she also holds citizenship. “After the tragedy of 9/11 my father and I were commissioned by the Pentagon to help the children who lost a parent paint through their grief,” she says, explaining that from that experience, they founded Lamb Umbrellas For Peace which has now seen more than three million people in 19 countries paint umbrellas. “Additionally, I support my husband in his jewelry business while also being represented by Bravo Talent Management. But my biggest accomplishments are being a mother to Rose, Joe, and Matt and mother- in- law to Steve, and Grandma to Emma and Colin!” she says.
What do you do to recharge? I love to travel, and I competed and now judge pageants.

MOTHER-DAUGHTER DUO
With more than 27 years of combined real estate experience, TARA KELLEHER and MARY GRACE KELLEHER bring the perfect blend of wisdom, energy, style, and dedication. Tara, a seasoned broker with a background in education and business, began her real estate career in 2007. Her daughter Mary Grace has also now joined the team—lending her savvy digital marketing skills and styling expertise. As a licensed broker residing in Fulton Market, Mary Grace offers clients direct access to Chicago’s real estate marketplace. Together, this mother-daughter duo has closed more than 450 successful transactions, specializing in residential sales. e Tara Kelleher Team also offers clients staging, home styling, and design services. Known for their personalized service, strong negotiation skills, and deep local market knowledge, Tara and Mary Grace have earned numerous accolades— including Top Producer Award for 18 consecutive years.
What excites you most about the future of your industry? e emergence of real estate tokenization—and the long-term potential it holds to reshape residential real estate as we know it. Tokenization allows real property to be divided into digital shares, or tokens, on a blockchain. While it’s currently being piloted mostly in commercial and high-value investment properties, the technology’s ability to fractionalize ownership, increase transparency, and lower barriers to entry could eventually trickle down to the residential space in meaningful ways. In the future, homeowners may be able to sell fractional stakes in their properties to investors, providing a creative way to access liquidity without taking on debt. First-time buyers might be able to co-invest in homes through tokenized platforms, helping them get into markets that once felt out of reach. at’s a future worth being excited about.
What’s a trend you’re embracing—or challenging? We are embracing AI as a powerful tool to elevate the client experience. However, we’re also challenging the notion that AI can replace human connection in real estate. Buying or selling a home is deeply personal, and while we leverage technology to enhance our efficiency and insights, we remain firmly rooted in the belief that trust, empathy, and local expertise can’t be automated.
What legacy do you hope to leave behind? e Tara Kelleher Team hopes to leave a legacy of lasting, positive impact by elevating the standard of service in residential real estate—not just for today, but for the future of the industry.

EMPOWERED DENTISTRY
When DR. MAGGIE GROTHE (DMD) was growing up, she wanted to become a country music singer. But after taking a human physiology class in her senior year at Barrington High School, she discovered her passion for the complexities of human physiology and healing the body. When she was introduced to dentistry, she fell in love with the unique combination of art and science and the ability to be proactive, not reactive, in her treatment. After working in the dental field for a few years, she was unhappy with the standard of culture and patient experience in other practices. With encouragement from her husband, Ben, she founded Root Dental to deliver the care she knows her patients deserve.
What excites you most about the future of your industry? e push towards a more collaborative approach with overall wellness. Dentistry has always been separated from medicine, but oral health is a fundamental pillar of overall wellness. It’s exciting to see oral health become part of the conversation of overall health.
What conversations are you passionate about bringing to the table? e relationship between oral and systemic health! e mouth is a mirror to the rest of the body— cavities, gum disease, mouth sores, these are all symptoms of a larger systemic issue, it’s just a matter of taking the time and doing the investigating to determine the root cause of oral health issues.
How do you give back to your community or industry? I love collaborating with other small businesses and lifting each other up. Root Dental has also started a giveback program. Each quarter we choose a local nonprofit and donate $1 for every social media follow and $5 for every new patient to the chosen local nonprofit. Our first quarterly giveback recipient is Animal House Shelter in Huntley.
What legacy do you hope to leave behind? I hope that patients of Root Dental can say they were treated better than they ever thought possible by their dental team. I also hope to be the type of leader whose team members feel empowered, supported, and challenged. As for my family, I hope my daughters grow up to take challenges head on, with the perspective that their mom had one of the strongest work ethics of anyone they knew and it inspired them to achieve whatever they set their mind to.

FAMILY CENTERED APPROACH
SHANA VITEK is an Equity Partner at Beermann LLP, the largest family law firm in the country. For more than 20 years, she has practiced divorce and family law— handling a wide range of cases, including divorces for business owners, high-profile, and high-net-worth clients. Her ability to handle any type of case has allowed her to become one of only a few attorneys in Illinois to be Board Certified in Family Trial Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. “Every family is different, so each case that I handle needs an individualized approach,” she says. “All initial consultations include information about the alternatives to litigation and keeping the divorce process out of court.” In addition to being a litigator, Vitek is also a trained mediator, arbitrator, and collaborative attorney who serves as Chair of the Beermann LLP Family Law Clinic. “We feel strongly about giving back to the community,” she says. “Given the size of our firm, we are in a unique position to make a big difference for clients who would otherwise go unrepresented in family law matters.”
Most rewarding part of what you do? Helping people through a very difficult time and watching them get to a more positive place in their lives.
How should women support other women? By forming relationships with each other, both at the peer level and through mentorship. Women have unique career challenges, so it is extremely valuable to connect with other women in similar professional and personal situations.
Powerful woman you admire the most? Ruth Bader Ginsberg. She stayed true to herself and her goals, while being a wife and mother in a time when she had to fight for every opportunity.

“Some women don’t get to live soft lives. They are handed chaos, grief, and betrayal—and they learn how to bloom from it anyway. They become the ones who know how to carry others when their world falls apart, because they remember what it was like when no one showed up for them. They are not here because it was easy; they are here because they don’t give up.”

LUXURY REAL ESTATE EXPERT C
ONNIE ANTONIOU was born to Greek-American parents with deep roots in the motion picture business. As a result, she was exposed to unique work and life experiences, including dining with such Hollywood icons as Sylvester Stallone and Donald O’Connor. Antoniou took her first job at age 11, popping popcorn for 50 cents an hour in her family’s movie theaters, a role that fostered a hard work ethic and a commitment to exceptional customer service. Today, this global real estate advisor and former broker-owner of two Sotheby’s International Realty offices has established herself as a trusted authority in luxury real estate— serving buyers and sellers throughout the suburban Chicago area and southeast Wisconsin. She got her start in the highly competitive Hinsdale market before achieving impressive milestones as the senior vice president of sales in Barrington with Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty. Her proven understanding of what high-profile buyers are looking for in luxury properties has allowed her to foster meaningful, long-term relationships with an elite clientele. She has represented Chicago Blackhawks players and coaches, and renowned entrepreneurs and executives, among many others throughout her impressive career.
How do you give back to your industry or community? Giving back is essential. I truly enjoy mentoring other women and helping them build fulfilling, successful careers. Beyond that, I’m actively involved in my community—both philanthropically and through hands-on engagement—because strengthening the community strengthens us all.
What conversations are you passionate about bringing to the table? I believe we’re not just selling houses—we’re helping people find homes that align with their lifestyles. e attributes of the house, its location, the neighborhood, and how it fits a buyer’s daily life and the commute all matter. Guiding clients to that perfect match is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable parts of this industry.
What is one leadership lesson you’ve learned? Real estate is a tough business, and not everyone thrives in it. Success requires resilience, discipline, and a strong work ethic. I value mentoring those with true potential, but I’ve also learned an important leadership lesson: if it becomes clear that someone isn’t suited for this industry, it’s best for both the team and the individual to acknowledge it and move forward. at honesty ultimately benefits everyone involved.

MISSION TO THRIVE J
ENNIFER J. MOREIRA (M.D., FACOG), owner of riveOb and Women’s Wellness, purchased her practice when her youngest son was just three months old—eager to provide the same type of individual and personalized care she always wanted for herself. “Already living in South Barrington, I wanted to stay close to my community,” says Moreira, who earned an undergraduate degree at Loyola University and a M.D. from Ross University before completing her OB/GYN residency at Mercy Hospital. “Following residency, I worked at Alexian Brothers for eight years before deciding to venture out on my own.” Today, her hard-working team at riveOB includes two nurse practitioners and medical/admin staff. “Together, we are able to provide the best environment for the best in patient care.”
What conversations are you passionate about bringing to the table? As an OB/GYN, I’m passionate about bringing conversations to the table that improve both patient outcomes and the way we practice medicine. at means advocating for maternal health equity, reducing disparities in care, and ensuring that reproductive and prenatal care remain evidence based and accessible. I’m committed to conversations about patient empowerment—making sure every patient feels informed, respected, and heard.
How do you maintain balance between your professional and personal life? I see work-life balance not as a perfect daily split, but as being intentional with my time. At work, I’m fully present for my patients: outside of work, I make sure to protect time for my family, health, and interests. As a working mother of four boys and business owner, I am profoundly blessed to have a village of family and friends that help make things run smoothly, especially for those unexpected events.
How do you de ne con dence—and how have you built it? As a physician, I define confidence as the quiet certainty that I can handle whatever walks through the door-whether that’s a routine prenatal visit or an unexpected emergency—while still being open to asking for help or learning something new. It’s not about knowing everything; it’s about trusting your training, your judgement, and your ability to adapt.
What legacy do you hope to leave behind? Ultimately, I want my legacy to be one of compassion, excellence, and empowerment—where the way I practiced medicine encouraged others to lead with both skill and heart.

PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST
D
R. AGNIESZKA “AGGIE” IWASZCZYSZYN, founder of Hart Dental, says it took her a while to find the right location when first opening her office in Barrington. “I was looking for an office for months before I decided to do a startup so I could open an office that focuses on conservative, preventative dentistry with honest treatment planning,” says Dr. Aggie, as she’s known to patients. e right fit came along and Hart Dental opened in 2018, surviving a 10-week shutdown during the pandemic only to expand in 2022. In addition to offering microscope dentistry and 3D CBCT imaging, the practice has an in-house periodontist for such surgical procedures as implants, sinus lifting, and gum grafting. Root canals, retreatments, and apical surgery are performed by an in-house endodontist. “We also have an in-house pediatric dentist with a general anesthesia team for both kids and adults,” adds Dr. Aggie, a Polish immigrant who earned a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry. “ e difference you can make in someone’s life with dentistry is incredible.”
What legacy do you hope to leave behind? I’m on a mission to leave behind a legacy in dentistry—one built on honesty, integrity, and truly personalized care. In a time when corporate dentistry and medicine are racing toward profit-driven models that overlook the individual, I’m choosing a different path. Patients deserve more than cookie-cutter care—they deserve attention, empathy, and treatment that’s genuinely tailored to their needs. For me, people will always come before profits. At Hart Dental, we never take a one-size-fits-all approach. We get to know you and your family—your health history, goals, and preferences—so we can tailor care that truly fits.
What conversations are you passionate about bringing to the table? One topic I constantly raise in conversation is the experience of women in health care—both as patients and as providers. Shockingly, women were largely excluded from medical research until 1993, and we’re still seeing the effects today. In dentistry, we observe a similar trend: girls often have more cavities than their brothers, and women tend to face more dental issues than their male partners—even when their home care is better. We have theories, but the truth is, this disparity hasn’t been seriously studied. Why not? Why is there such silence around this? It’s time we demand answers—and keep asking the hard questions.

GUIDING WITH EMPATHY J
ANET BOYLE, Founder and Principal of Family Law Solutions, says that after decades of representing clients through everything from domestic violence to million-dollar custody fights, she realizes that for most people, divorce is just a blip on the radar of their lives. In the end, her goal is to help them move on to their next chapter. A former Assistant Cook County Public Defender, she’s built a specialty in family law with a special expertise in tax issues, harnessing her graduate degree in taxation during cases that involve complex asset division. rough it all, she’s with each of her clients during pivotal moments in their lives, strategically guiding them with empathy.
How do you de ne con dence? Confidence is achieved the day you wake up and finally realize that yes, I do belong in this profession as a leader and as a member of this community. When you no longer fear the reaction others may have to your performance or your statements or your actions, you know viscerally that you belong.
What is one leadership lesson you've learned? To truly listen to others and not always be determined to have things my way. Listen not only to words but to the intent. Never presume that what you want is the same as what others want. Never presume your dream is the same as the people you are working with—professionally or in any organization you may be a part of.
What do you do to give back to your community? I was active in professional and community organizations throughout my career, participating on many committees. I have recently become more active in charity work—being a member of Northwest Community Hospital Foundation Board for 12 years while being chair for four of those years, as well as being a member of the WINGS board.
What piece of advice do you wish you received earlier in your career? at there is no such thing as rejection. It is a self-imposed emotion. If someone says “no” to what you want, nothing in your life changes. You are where you were before you asked. So don’t be afraid to ask. Once I began to ask for what I wanted, I was amazed at how often people said “yes.” e fear of asking was misplaced.

SKINNY SOUP
(VEGETARIAN PHO)
WORDS, STYLING, AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY FOOD EDITOR BY MONICA KASS ROGERS
Icall this delightful bowl “skinny soup” because, full of fresh vegetables, fragrant broth, and rice noodles, it is filling without being high in calories. Free of gluten, wheat, dairy, and fat, the soup cooks up in less than half an hour. To make it, you’ll use a good quality gluten-free vegetable stock with aromatics and spices (ginger, cinnamon stick, star anise, and clove) added to deepen the flavor and scent. As the broth simmers, add fresh prepared veggies and a handful of rice noodles. Simmer until softened, and finish with an herb, bean sprout, red pepper, and lime garnish.
SERVES 4
INGREDIENTS
FOR THE BROTH
• 6 cups gluten-free vegetable stock
• 2 garlic cloves, peels discarded, thinly sliced
• 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, peel discarded, thinly sliced
• 2 small cinnamon sticks
• 2 star anise
• 2 cloves
• 1 tablespoon wheat-and gluten-free soy sauce or tamari
• 1 kaffir lime leaf OR 1 bay leaf
• 1 small white onion, halved and slivered
FOR THE VEG & NOODLES
• 3 small carrots, peels and tops discarded, cut into thin julienne strips
• 1, 150-gram package of white shimeji mushrooms, broken into small pieces
• 4 scallions, ends trimmed, sliced thin
• 1 handful of rice noodles (about 6 ounces)
FOR THE GARNISH
• 1 cup very fresh mung bean sprouts
• ½ cup fresh ai basil leaves
• Small bunch fresh mint
• Small bunch cilantro
• 2 limes, cut into wedges
• 1 sweet or spicy red pepper, seeded and cored, diced
METHOD
MAKE STOCK In a heavy-bottomed soup pot over medium heat, add vegetable stock, garlic, ginger, cinnamon
sticks, star anise, cloves, onion, and soy. Heat to boiling. Immediately reduce heat to low. Simmer gently for 20 minutes. Pluck out and discard the cinnamon sticks, ginger, star anise, and cloves, leaving the onion and garlic.
ADD VEGGIES AND NOODLES Add carrots and simmer for 4 minutes until tender. Add mushrooms, scallions, and rice noodles. Simmer another minute or two until noodles are soft.
SERVE Ladle soup into serving bowls, dividing noodles, onion, mushrooms, and carrots equally. Add bean sprouts, basil, mint, and cilantro to each bowl. Serve with chopped red pepper and wedges of lime at the table.
A ROMAN REVERIE
Eager to catch a glimpse of the new pope—and lured by a Caravaggio exhibition—my daughter and I set o to explore the Eternal City.
WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN
With last spring’s excitement surrounding the appointment of the first U.S.-born pope— and especially as Pope Leo XIV hails from Chicago—my daughter and I were inspired to visit Rome. Adding to the inspiration was the blockbuster Caravaggio exhibition at the Palazzo Barberini—I’ve long adored the work of this brilliant, if tempestuous, genius. So, in May, we said addio to the North Shore and buongiorno to Rome!
STAY
e Anantara Palazzo Naiadi, an opulent 19th-century marble palace overlooking Piazza della Repubblica, served as our home base. Deriving its name from the Sanskrit word meaning “without end,” the luxury hotel group Anantara promises unforgettable journeys rooted in local culture, beauty, and a sense of movement—and its Roman outpost more than delivered.
A member of e Leading Hotels of the World, Palazzo Naiadi is steeped in a history dating back to the splendor of
Anantara Palazzo Naiadi hotel facade
ancient Rome. e neoclassical palace overlooks the grand Fountain of the Naiads and sits directly atop the ancient Diocletian Baths—a vast thermal complex built between 298 and 306 AD that once served as a social hub for Romans. From the hotel’s lower level, glass floors reveal the baths’ preserved foundations, pools, and mosaics, offering a glimpse into the city’s layered past.
e building’s stately facade provides a dramatic welcome, and inside, guests are greeted by a soaring white stucco lobby lined with colonnades and crowned by a glittering Murano glass chandelier. Modern touches, including a striking piece by famed Italian artist Mario Sironi, blend seamlessly with the hotel’s classic elegance.
With 232 rooms, the property offers a full suite of luxury amenities: the Michelin-worthy restaurant INEO, an indulgent Anantara Spa, and a fitness center outfitted with cutting-edge Technogym equipment. Its panoramic rooftop terrace—one of the largest in central Rome—is home to SEEN by Olivier Bar, where cocktails and sunsets are equally unforgettable. An infinity pool completes the rooftop experience, perfect for a post-sightseeing dip.
Our suite situated just above the piazza, offered an elegant retreat at the day’s end with its high ceilings and a glorious crown molding—possibly the most ornate I’ve ever seen. Striped wallpaper, sumptuous bedding, and opulent décor created a regal atmosphere.
e enormous marble bathroom felt indulgent, and the Aqua di Parma products added an aromatic element. Our view of the Fountain of the Naiads and the bustling square captivated us, and each night before bed, we’d throw open the windows and people-watch to our hearts’ content. When we weren’t marveling at the splendor of our suite, we were indulging in unforgettable experiences across Rome—starting, of course, with the food.

DINE
An absolute highlight of our stay was dining at INEO, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant. Its name, from the Latin meaning “to enter” or “to begin,” captures the philosophy of Executive Chef Heros De Agostinis, who brings together the flavors and aromas from the many lands that have shaped his decades-long culinary journey. e ambiance is intimate and elegant; 1960s-style lamps designed by Gae Aulenti cast a warm glow over the rich leather and velvet seating. Every course was a revelation—artfully presented and infused with heritage and innovation. e six-piece amuse-bouche (each bite beautifully balanced on an individual pedestal) set the tone for what would be a seven-course culinary extravaganza. e evening began with Veal Sweetbread in Amalfi Lemon, Artichokes and Green Shiso and Bluefin Tuna Panzanella; then “Tribute to the Master” Cacio and Pepper Spaghetti with Raw Prawns and Lime for the first course; then Muhammara Ravioli with Seafood and Chef’s Baharat for the second; then a divine Black Cod with Lime and Curry, Basil and Zucchini Flowers for the main. To top it all off was a decadent dessert of Strawberry, Rhubarb, Vanilla, and Cardamom. e expert sommelier paired each course with aromatic, delicious wine.
SEE
As part of our papal adventure, we were fortunate to witness a historic moment—catching Pope Leo XIV’s first Sunday prayer in St. Peter’s Square. Standing in the heart of Rome, surrounded by thousands of well-wishers, was a moment we won’t soon forget.
On your visit, be sure to take advantage of two memorable excursions arranged by Anantara. “Secrets of the Vatican” offered exclusive access to closed-off areas of the Vatican Museums, led by a passionate art historian who brought Renaissance masterpieces to life and revealed hidden papal histories.
For a lighter (and faster!) pace, “Rome by Vespa” was thrilling. Seated in a classic sidecar with our informative and capable guide at the wheel, we zipped around the city visiting landmarks like the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and the panoramic Janiculum Hill, along with vibrant neighborhoods

including Trastevere, Testaccio, and Rione Monti.
One of my favorite places in Rome is the Galleria Borghese, containing a treasure trove of works by Bernini, Caravaggio, and Titian. Bernini’s sculptures have always been a particular favorite (Apollo and Daphne, e Abduction of Persephone)—his ability to carve softness and motion into marble is nothing short of miraculous. Even the villa’s ceilings and floors are works of art.
Don’t miss the Galleria’s recently reopened Giardino dell’Uccelliera. Lemon trees and flowering plants flank the path to a beautiful aviary adorned with baroque flourishes and rooftop statuary.
e garden is not easy to find, so be sure to ask one of the security guards to reveal its entrance. Note: be sure to purchase your tickets for the Galleria Borghese well in advance—although I bought our tickets weeks ahead of the trip, many of the days and times were already booked.
After the art immersion, we took a break to absorb Rome. A lovely spot to soak in the city is along the Tiber River, under the shade of the stately plane trees that line Via Lungotevere. e tree’s multi-colored bark and expansive canopies are more beautiful than the name might suggest. With St. Peter’s Basilica and Castel Sant’Angelo in the distance, we watched as the locals strolled along the banks of the gently flowing river.
Of course, no trip to Rome is complete without seeing the
Colosseum and the Roman Forum. If you’re a history buff, I highly recommend a guided tour—there is always something new to learn. For a bird’s-eye view of the area, head to the terrace atop the Victor Emmanuel II Monument.
Just next door to the monument is the Capitoline Museums—the oldest public museums in the world, dating back to 1471—offering an extraordinary collection of ancient sculpture and Renaissance masterpieces. e museums border the stunning Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo in the 16th century.
For poetry lovers, a stop at the Keats-Shelley House located next to the Spanish Steps is a must. e museum is dedicated to the Romantic poets John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley and contains a collection of memorabilia, letters, manuscripts, and even a death mask.
To cap off the trip, we were thrilled and fortunate to catch the blockbuster Caravaggio exhibition at Palazzo Barberini, a breathtaking survey of the artist’s work, including rare pieces from private collections. His dramatic lighting and emotional realism never cease to amaze me.
ough our trip was brief, it left a lasting impression. We set out to experience the city through the lens of a pivotal papal moment and the unveiling of a beloved artist’s work. What we found was a vibrant city and living museum, where every street, building, and piazza echo with centuries of history. From religious moments in St. Peter’s Square to awe-inspiring masterpieces, Rome reminded us that history is something you feel, see, and live.
Arrivederci and buon viaggio!

HEALTH CARE AND PREVENTION
WORDS BY CHIRAG PATEL, M.D., CEO, HANSA MEDICAL GROUPE
One of my goals, as a physician, is to educate my patients and their families about managing their health care. is includes a strong focus on prevention and empowering patients by education.
Being treated by a top doc or well-known specialist for a condition or an acute problem makes sense, especially when we are searching for cutting edge treatments and rare conditions or situations.
However, my job as a primary care physician is to really focus on our patients’ preventive care, and hopefully they won’t develop major medical problems. We do this with frequent visits and communication with our patients. Empowering our patients to take charge of their health, has been vital in keeping them healthier and leading a more independent lifestyle.
Some of the more common health care preventive measures include mammograms, colonoscopy, prostate enzyme levels, vaccinations, cardiac screening, blood work, exercise programs, and diet modification. Most primary care physicians are managing these points with their patients. If not brought up by your doctor,
be proactive and ask and expect a plan to address these preventive measures.
When dealing with a chronic condition like high blood pressure, chronic pain, or diabetes, ask for all treatment options, as no two patient cases are alike and having tailored medical care provides better focused outcomes. Sometimes getting a second opinion or a specialist involved can be helpful in providing another fresh perspective. ere is a lot of information on the internet about medical diseases and conditions. Be careful on where you are getting the information. I always encourage patients to research, but to identify accredited websites that discuss evidence-based medical care. ere are great sites on holistic approaches to treat conditions as well but should be discussed with your physician prior to starting any kind of over-the-counter supplement or treatment. Avoid getting false hope by reading one person’s experience or cure and assuming that will automatically work for you. ere is also no exact way to verify that their story is even true.
With rising health care cost and insurance issues like prior authorizations, prevention has become even more important. To sum up, work closely with your trusted primary care physician who should be able to navigate and assist you. Remember that preventing a health-related problem will most often have a better outcome then waiting for something adverse to occur and then trying to treat afterwards.

Steady Guidance in Times of Uncertainty
Divorce is never simple. Beyond the emotional toll, it often involves complex financial questions, property division, and disputes over significant assets. For many, it can feel like standing on uncertain ground, unsure of the next step.
For attorney Fedor Kozlov, guiding clients through high-stakes divorces has been his life’s work for more than fifteen years. He has represented business owners, professionals, and families in cases involving companies, investment portfolios, and substantial property interests. His approach is disciplined and compassionate, combining financial insight with steady support during one of life’s most difficult transitions.

By balancing the skills of a negotiator with the resolve of a litigator, he has earned the trust of families, professionals, and business owners alike.
Every case is unique, but the goal is always the same: protect my clients’ interests, minimize risks, and help them move forward with confidence.
Freedom of Motion
Back in 2015, at a hair salon in Naperville, no one could have ever guessed that the woman holding the shears would one day shape the way horses move across arenas and fields. But for Eileen Fuller, the shift from hairstylist to saddle, bit, and bridle fitter felt as natural as finding her stride.
Chomping at the bit with a passion for horses, Fuller was ready to try something new—something that would let her indulge her horse hobby, or, as she jokingly calls it, addiction.
From shears to saddles, Eileen Fuller finds her perfect fit— cutting through the obstacles between horse and rider.

“My saddle fitting career all started at Barrington Saddlery,” she recalls, when longtime friend and master saddler Kate Ballard suggested she try working in the shop. “It just took off from there.”
By 2017, Fuller had crossed the pond to the U.K. to earn her Society of Master Saddlers qualification in saddle fitting. She returned to the U.S. armed with hands-on experience and expertise in working with horses and riders, only fueling her passion further, and launched Freedom of Motion—a name that doubles as both a mission and a metaphor.
With Freedom of Motion, Fuller sets out to ensure every horse and rider finds their perfect fit—a philosophy familiar to many of her Barrington clients. e community’s active equestrian community played a key role in her journey, providing both her start and some of her first loyal clients.
“One of my favorite success stories was a big Friesian who just couldn’t move correctly under saddle,” she recalls. “We fitted him with a bespoke Adam Ellis saddle, and suddenly horse and rider were in harmony. Even our client was impressed with how good he felt.” ese partnerships with high-end makers like Adam Ellis have elevated her work further.
“Adam is always open to adjustments. ough as he puts it, ‘Here she goes, doing my head in again,’” she says, teasing but grateful. For Fuller, those details are never negotiable—every stitch is part of a story between horse and rider.
Her work is both an art and an anatomy lesson. She points out that proper fit isn’t about a single measurement but an orchestra of angles.
“It’s the width of the gullet, the angle of the rails, the channel, the panels—it all has to come together for the horse,” she says. “ en we work on what’s best for the rider.”
But Fuller doesn’t stop there. She’s also certified in equine nutrition and massage, and she’s even rolled up her sleeves for full-horse dissections.
“Once you see a horse from the inside out, it completely changes how you fit them on the outside,” she says.
As for the future? Fuller envisions a shift toward teaching. “In five years, I’d like to be in a more educational role, maybe splitting time between the U.S. and Europe.” Wherever she goes, her philosophy remains clear: Riders must never feel pressured by trends or tack reps. “Let your horse tell you,” she advises. “ ey’ll show you how they’re using their body under saddle.”
