he 2010 Wolf Pack football team is poised to have a great season and a shot at winning the WAC championship.

The Pack’s explosive offensive will be led by senior quarterback Colin Kaepernick and running back Vai Taua. Kaepernick and Taua both rushed for over 1,000 yards last season and are primed to do it again this year. With added depth at the receiver position, the Pack should pick defenses apart while racking up the points.

The home opener is Thursday, Sept. 2 against Eastern Washington, then the Pack will follow that up with two more home games against Colorado State and the California Bears. League play starts on Saturday, Oct. 9 against San Jose State where the Pack will look to begin its domination on the WAC and bring home another championship.

This is an extraordinary 10 mile hike out and back. The trail climbs steadily upward passing through patches of pine forest, ponds, and amazing views of Tahoe. After reaching the top, the group will plant American flags in honor of 9/11. A snack will be provided for the hike.

eing conscious about the dog’s diet, sleeping arrangements, and exercise routines are all ways to enhance its quality of life.

Diet Keep a close watch on the food that it is fed. Overweight dogs often suffer more greatly than leaner dogs due to the added weight on their joints. Stay away from foods that are high in calories.

Better Sleep Lying on hard and cold surfaces often worsens arthritis. In order to ease the pain, provide your dog with a dog bed.

Allowing your dog to sleep indoors or on a heated bed will also offer a lot of relief.

Exercise Healthy joints are a lot less painful. Getting your dog into a regular exercise routine that strengthens muscles and cartilage will lead to healthier joints as well. This will increase the blood flow through the joints. Be cautious about planning activities that are low impact and will not cause stress or additional pain to the animal.

Extra TLC Simply raising feeding dishes off the floor so the animal is not required to bend down as far can be helpful in reducing joint pain. Consider providing steps to areas where your dog once jumped. Allow your pet to use a ramp when getting on the back of trucks or into vehicles.

Kids’ Corner Policy Reminders Kids’ Corner will only accept children ages 3 to 6 who are bathroom independent. • For the morning time slots, parents may sign their child up for either the 8:30–10:30 am or 10:30 am –12:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and either 8–10 am or 10 am–12 pm on Saturday. Evening slot is from 5:30–7:30 pm, Monday through Thursday. • The room operates on a 6 to 1 ratio, with a maximum of 12 kids allowed at any given time.

To accommodate this ratio, the Club requires reservations be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure staffing. Each Saturday at 12 pm, reservations will be opened for the upcoming week. • All children must be dropped off in Kids’ Corner within 15 minutes of their reservation time. If the parent has not checked their child in within the 15 minute window, the reservation becomes void and the spot will be opened to a child on the waiting list. • No-show reservations will result in a $10 fee per child due to the Club. Cancellations must be received by 8 am the day of the reservation.

All Kids’ Club members receive a membership card and a quarterly newsletter filled with interactive games, trivia, and birthday wishes. hen you think about window fashions and window coverings, you probably are concerned with how they work and how they look. One area, though, that is often overlooked concerns their safety. There has been a major ground shifting when it comes to window covering safety over the past few years. As a result, there have been some major recalls of product that have affected the U.S. market. The majority of these have been due to strangulation from corded systems.

In response to the need for safety, window covering manufacturers have corrected these design flaws and at the same time developed new and exciting lifting systems. Briefly, these are the systems that are available to you now.

Corded Systems: There are different types of corded systems.

From the standard cords that we are all used to, to the continuous cord loop style with the built in clutch, to some of the new retractable spring loaded cord systems. All of these systems are designed with safety in mind.

Cord-Free Systems: There are also many safely used cord-free systems available to consumers these days. You may be aware that most products are available with motorization. Another relatively new option for lifting window covering product are handlifted, cord-free systems. These are spring loaded systems that only require that you grasp the desired rail and move it up or down to the desired location.

This six-week program will specialize in various types of physical demands. Fee includes two one-hour group trainings per week, fitness assessments, and weekly tips and feedback.

Personal Training Double Training: $125/person/5 sessions one-on-two personal training makes it possible for you and a friend, or other compatible partner, to work toward similar goals under the guidance of one personal trainer. The objective is to encourage you to exercise properly and achieve your goals with the support of a partner. Goals might include improved cardio vascular health, weight loss, general conditioning, toning, or improved strength for a particular activity or sport like skiing or running.

Fitness Assessment: $85 Includes an initial hour consultation of body fat analysis, blood pressure, weight, muscle endurance/strength, flexibility, and a body mechanic test. A one-hour follow up personal training session will then be scheduled to go over the results and recommended exercise program.

Private Session: $50 Includes a one-hour, one-on-one session from one of the Club’s personal trainers.

Slide Rules Swimmers must stay clear of the catch pool and slide exit area. • Riders must exit the catch pool immediately after use. • Children less than 48 inches tall who are unable to swim may only use the slide with a parent. • Parents may assist their child out of the water in the catch pool if necessary, but they cannot stand in front of the slide to catch their child. Parents may wait at the steps if needed. • Only one person at a time allowed down the slide, excluding a parent and small child as described above. • Please walk up the steps and make sure the catch pool is empty before beginning slide run. • Riders must go down on their back with feet first. • No flotation devices of any kind permitted on the slide, including those in bathing suits. • No goggles, sunglasses, hats, or any object that may fall off into the water permitted on the slide. • No diving from the slide into the catch pool upon exiting the flume. • Do not reach into the slide from the deck area. • No wading on the steps or in the catch pool.

Loyalty Points Earn loyalty points each time you golf on the Canyon Nine! For each resident green fee purchased on your account, five points will be added to your loyalty account. Once you have earned 50 points, you will receive a free green fee.

Work Never Ends to Make Sierra Canyon a Great Community!

T

here are so many projects that the Sierra Canyon staff undertake that is seems as though our work is never finished, but that’s what keeps Sierra Canyon in the great condition you see today. To name just a few projects constantly requiring attention are: landscaping, Aspen Lodge, administrative, and working closely with our Somersett Master Association to keep it all glued together to preserve, protect and enhance your Sierra Canyon Association. All of these things keep your biggest asset, your home values, at their highest possible value and that is worth all of the hard work!

In the coming months you will see a lot of landscape maintenance projects completed by National Landscape. Better erosion control in many areas will be installed, waddles along walking paths replaced (and added if needed), five or six trees replaced, and new decomposed granite at the Aspen Lodge. For landscape areas it’s important for residents to know the difference between common areas that are manicured areas and re-vegetation areas that are not manicured.

Common areas have planted trees, plants, and decomposed granite that are well maintained. The re-vegetation areas that were originally hydro-seeded are the areas that the association is required by the City of Reno to have look like the native plantings on the hillsides of Nevada with sage brush, penstemon wildflowers, wild grasses, rabbit bush and other plantings, etc. native to Nevada. The spiky purple flowering thistle you may see within the community from time to time are noxious weeds and every year we fight to eliminate them from all areas!

Landscaping is a huge dollar amount in our association’s operating budget and we take landscaping very seriously as your association staff. Thank you to those homeowners who have volunteered their time and efforts to find and report water irrigation leaks and other issues in both our common and re-vegetation areas to me.

We have also completed other projects around the community!

The tennis courts were re-surfaced last month and now have a grit added to them that will slow down the ball once it comes off the surface. The baseline is wider and we changed the color of the courts to navy blue and green to allow for better visibility of the tennis ball as it comes off the surface. We slurry sealed all of our walking paths within Sierra Canyon, creating a protective cover from the inclement weather and to extend the life of the paths. Upcoming projects include light ballast replacement in the fitness center, and painting projects at our

Next year we will be focusing on some new windscreens for the tennis court that will come out of Sierra Canyon’s reserve. Reserve accounts (also referred to as reserve funds or simply reserves) are funds set aside for major maintenance, repair and replacement of common elements in more than one and fewer than thirty years. Reserves are intended to prevent the need for special assessments. The tennis court and walking path projects were planned and budgeted for within our reserves and were replaced this year based on the reserve schedule for work to be completed and necessity based on the condition of both assets. Our reserve is over 100% funded and that is as good as it gets when it comes to an association’s financial stability!

There is a reason Somersett-Sierra Canyon was voted last year in “Where to Retire” magazine as “one of the best places to retire in the United States”. What an honor to achieve this prestigious status!

Fall Reminders • Speed Limits. The parkway is not a speedway. Please drive the speed limit, watch for pedestrians in the crosswalks, and especially watch for children waiting for school buses. We continue to notice increased presence of the Reno PD. So slow down and drive safely.

• Political Signs (Ref. NRS 116.325) Political signs are defined as signs that express support for or opposition to a candidate, political party, or ballot questions. Only one political sign per candidate/party/ question per property is permitted and is not to exceed 24 inches by 36 inches. Any political sign shall be removed within 10 days following the actual election date.

• Gate Codes. For those of you who live on a private street (behind a gate) – if you have trouble with your gate code, please call us at 626-7333 or 747-4663, preferably during business hours. If you need to call after hours, please call the 24-hour answering service at 831-7440 and ask to have Lisa paged. If you are a new homeowner/lot owner on a private street and have not contacted us to set up your gate code, please get in touch with us right away so you’re not locked out after hours.

CC&R’s Article IV, Section 26) Trailers, campers, boats, recreational vehicles, machinery… whether they are operative, under repair, junk, inoperative, licensed or unlicensed, or other similar type objects, shall not be placed, stored, or parked on streets and shall only be permitted to be parked or stored on lots if kept in a fully enclosed garage; except that this provision does not preclude operable, licensed passenger vehicles or trucks of up to one (1) ton in capacity which are routinely in use from being parked in private driveways.
