Mindful Travel. Activities. Guides. Backcountry Safety.

know before you go

IN THIS NEW LANDSCAPE OF LIFE...

Embracing the mindset of a responsible traveler is more important than ever. For detailed information about travel and activities in North Lake Tahoe, please check out our Know Before Your Go guide on GoTahoeNorth.com/knowbeforeyougo. They provide the necessary tools to fully prepare for your time in North Lake Tahoe. From tips on how to demonstrate mindful travel to helpful hints for planning your trip, the Know Before You Go guide is the perfect resource for a successful getaway.

BACKCOUNTRY SAFETY

Play Safe – When going into the backcountry, tell someone where you are going, when you will return, and always bring safety gear.

Know Before You Go is also a term used to stress the importance of backcountry safety. Skiing or riding in the backcountry is an amazing way to experience nature however, because terrain access is beyond the boundaries of a ski resort, there is no avalanche control work or ski patrol. Before heading out into the backcountry, make sure to take an avalanche safety course, check weather conditions and fully assess the risk. There is specific gear you will need to stay safe (a beacon, probe and shovel to name a few), along with knowledge of reading snowpack and identifying safe routes to hike and lines to ride. Luckily, North Lake Tahoe is full of local experts with intimate knowledge of the area who can guide you through the backcountry for a safe, fun, and challenging adventure.

BECOME A STEWARD OF LAKE TAHOE

Leave no trace, pick up after your pet

Don’t leave food in your car and keep your distance

STAY EDUCATED

Stay connected to travel advisories and emergency updates

RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT

Stay on designated trails, follow signage

and

Be kind and support local businesses

help protect North Lake Tahoe

From mountaintop trails to crystal blue waters, respecting the environment and the people around you can make a huge impact on North Lake Tahoe. Visitors can make a commitment to preserving the natural wonders of the Sierra. Here are a few examples of how you can make a clear difference:

Become A Steward of Lake Tahoe

As we all traverse the terrain and enjoy all our area has to offer, our primary focus is to leave those spaces better than we found them. Region-wide efforts and initiatives like taking public transportation not only helps lower emissions to keep our air clean, but it’s also a free and convenient way to get to your favorite spots.

Respect The Environment

Help preserve North Lake Tahoe’s natural beauty by avoiding plastic bottles and utensils as well as disposing of trash in designated receptacles to reduce your ecological footprint. If you forgot your reusable water bottle, consider supporting the Tahoe Fund by purchasing a “Drink Tahoe Tap” water bottle at Raley’s grocery store in Incline Village, Nevada.

Stay Educated

Keep Wildlife Wild

Prepare in advance for your visit to the area by consulting one of our many guides like Know Before You Go. This will help keep you updated with the current weather conditions and stay safe during your visit. When you arrive, the Visitor Information Centers located in Tahoe City, Kings Beach, and Incline Village are a great way to get expert advice about what to expect when in the area.

Wildlife are an essential component of North Lake Tahoe’s ecosystem and culture. Watching them from a distance and refraining from feeding them will ensure their safety and yours. And make sure you’re “bear aware,” especially before and after hibernation, by putting trash in locking bear boxes and not leaving food in your vehicle.

Be Fire Safe

When planning to grill, start a campfire, or burning anything outdoors, consult fire restrictions and know the permitting rules ahead of time. Know what to do in the event of any emergency – wildfires can break out quickly and be unpredictable. Make sure you’re aware of Red Flag Warnings too as fires are not permitted during this time.

Demonstrate Mindful Travel

Keeping visitors and locals happy and healthy lays the foundation for a positive experience for all. Observe safety protocols in each establishment and if an area looks too crowded, think about exploring an alternate location. Overcrowding can produce safety and environmental hazards–with hundreds of acres of land to explore, you’re sure to find a location you’ll love, and maybe it will become your new favorite.

DISCOVER THE RICH HISTORY OF THE TAHOE REGION

North Lake Tahoe is known as one of the most beautiful regions in the country, and for good reason. Alongside a sparkling alpine lake with water so clear you can see 70 feet below its surface, you’ll find sweeping forests, awe-inspiring mountain views and vistas that offer something newly inspiring each season. More than offering a relaxing oasis for those looking to get away, the Tahoe Basin has a fascinating history that stretches back millions of years.

Lake Tahoe formed close to two million years ago, while the surrounding wilderness sprung up closer to 10,000 years ago. Since that time, the region has been home to a wide variety of residents, from the earliest Native American Washoe Tribe to famous artists such as Mark Twain (you can find an account of his time in Lake Tahoe in his book “Roughing It”). The area has also been the backdrop for a number of popular films, and you might be able to recognize stunning Lake Tahoe in scenes from The Godfather II, Bonanza, The Bodyguard and City of Angels.

While you’re here, you have the opportunity to check out a few historic landmarks and treasures that have been preserved over time. North Lake Tahoe is the proud home of the Cal Neva Lodge & Casino, which was famously owned by Frank Sinatra back in the 1960s, and is now undergoing renovations with hopes to reopen in time for its centennial anniversary in 2026. You’ll also find the Thunderbird Lodge, a sweeping estate originally built in 1936 that has now been turned into a veritable museum of Lake Tahoe treasures. To see some pieces of Lake Tahoe history up close, you can also check out the Gatekeepers Museum in Tahoe City, which features exhibits highlighting Native American history, the mysterious things found beneath the waters of Lake Tahoe and much more.

The Washoe portion of the exhibit is extensive and contains a number of baskets made by important female Washoe basket makers including Dat so La Lee, Maggie Mayo James, Tootsie Sam Dick, and many others. The Washoe exhibit not only represents the Washoe community with their wonderful and specialized basketry art, but also recognizes the Washoe as the original inhabitants of Lake Tahoe. Our display showcases the history of the Washoe in Lake Tahoe and their unique and artistically superb art of basket making.

PRESERVING WASHOE CULTURE

The Washoe people (Wašiw) were the first inhabitants of Lake Tahoe, coming to the Lake during spring and summer to hunt, fish, and gather. The center of the Wašiw world is Da.aw (Lake Tahoe) both geographically and spiritually. Like most native people, lifestyles revolved around the environment; the people were part of the environment, and everything was provided by the environment. The Washoe people collected roots, seeds, and berries for food and medicine, and willow for baskets – methods they still use today.

The Washoe people are deeply knowledgeable about the land and where resources are plentiful. This includes an understanding of the seasonal cycles of both plants and animals. Washoe culture is based mostly on legends that carried the explanation of different areas of life. The legends are handed over from one generation to the next by storytelling and are told to the younger generations to teach about the Washoe’s way of life. Children learn about hunting and gathering techniques, medicine preparation, and the legends which are meant to teach appreciation of the land. The Washoe way of life concentrates on family, cooperation, and unity. Older tribe members convey their knowledge to the younger so the tribe culture will thrive and survive.

Today, the Washoe Tribe works closely with several area organizations to conserve the natural habitat of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding region.

Tahoe adventures

BEST WILDFLOWER HIKES

Lake Tahoe’s mountainsides positively bloom with wildflowers for an unforgettable experience, offering hikers a bright, playful palette as the Sierra Nevada comes to life. Mountain elevation and orientation are largely responsible for the diverse types of flowers you’ll find, and if you know where to look, you can find these beautiful wildflowers several times a year.

Lake Tahoe’s wildflower season varies based on elevation. There are many species of wildflowers, such as the Woolly Mule’s Ears, that grow at nearly any elevation in the Lake Tahoe area. Wildflowers that need more water generally are found at higher elevations, such as the striking, bright orange Sierra Tiger Lily (also known as the Alpine Lily). If the previous winter has yielded a good amount of snow, then the runoff will continue to provide water to plants needing a wetter environment to thrive. Winters with heavy snow fall can also delay the bloom season by 1-2 months.

The best way to experience wildflowers is to head out on a hike on one of the many trails available. There are varying levels of difficulty, and even the most experienced hikers need to take extra care. While you enjoy your wildflower hike, remember look, don’t touch. Do not disturb the local flora or fauna, stay on trails and refrain from picking flowers or any other actions that could interfere with the natural environment. Also, remember to pack out everything you pack in.

TUBING AND SLEDDING

Tubing and sledding in Lake Tahoe are some of the most fun family-friendly ways to enjoy a snowy winter up close. And one of the best parts – you don’t need to be an expert at navigating the slopes to enjoy fast-paced fun. Depending on where you stay, you might not even need to leave your resort to find a fun spot.

Some sledding hills in Lake Tahoe are free, while others require a paid ticket. Paid spots are often located at ski resorts, include a sled or tube, are regularly groomed, and provide access to amenities. Free spots include parking, but they can get crowded and require your own gear. Several stores and gas stations sell gear, and calling ahead to see what they have in stock is recommended. For longer-lasting sleds, you might opt for the sturdier metal material over plastic. When on your winter trip, we encourage you to practice good “slediquette.” Take your belongings with you and properly dispose of broken equipment. Let’s keep the region looking beautiful and preserved. And whether you’re sledding or tubing, helmets are always encouraged.

Implementing Stewardship Plans

Lake Tahoe’s natural beauty — crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, and towering pines — plus endless mountain adventures make it an iconic, world-renowned destination that is loved by many. It’s also incredibly fragile and requires all of us to play a role in protecting it.

That’s why North Lake Tahoe is proudly aligned with and taking action to implement the Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Plan, encouraging everyone to help take care of Tahoe’s cherished communities and environment.

Innovation in Action: Meet BEBOT

Everyone can appreciate a pristine beach and our commitment to keeping our beaches clean and Tahoe blue includes cutting-edge solutions to reducing litter trash and microplastics. One of the newest tools in our stewardship toolkit is the BEBOT beach cleaning robot. This solar-powered remote-controlled machine sifts through sand to remove microplastics and trash like bottle caps and cigarette butts. Quiet and eco-friendly BEBOT is an initiative that is helping to keep the lake clean.

Access For All
