READ

I know it’s a shameless plug, but this is my first juice book in four years and I am EXTREMELY proud of it. I hope you enjoy the Juice & Blend 7-Day Reset as much as I enjoyed writing it!

WATCH

In the current climate, this is worth a watch as it tells the story of how The Sunday Times’ editor Harold Evans battled for justice for thalidomide victims. Don’t underestimate the power of Big Pharma!

LISTEN

Yes, another seamless plug for my own podcast :) However, Season 4 has just launched and I have interviewed some truly amazing guests which you can read all about on page 29.

Juicy greetings In the January issue of Juiced! magazine I started my ed’s letter by writing, ‘I guess the only way to start is... well thank f**k that’s over! I am, of course, talking about 2020, a year that goes down in history for all the WRONG reasons.’ However, little did I know that it wasn’t over, far from it. Matt Hancock and Boris Johnson Productions decided to commission Lockdown 3, which was surprising as Lockdowns 1 and 2 weren’t exactly box office hits! Lockdown 3 was longer and more painful than the first two combined. Many people, somewhat ironically, have suffered tremendously with their mental and physical health as a direct result of lockdowns and want to reclaim their freedom. As I write, although things can change quickly, normality – of some description – is slowly, but surely, returning. Portugal was one of the first countries to get the ‘green light’ and it means Juicy Oasis can get back to doing what it does best – helping people with their mental and physical health. I will never, especially knowing the genuine data about the virus, ever understand why fast food joints remained open but gyms and health retreats had to close, or the approach used by the majority of countries to ‘deal’ with the virus. However, we are where we are, and after a year of excess alcohol and junk food consumption, combined with a massive reduction in physical exercise for many, we have more people suffering with their weight and overall health than we’ve had in decades. In the UK, 21 June is being hailed as ‘Freedom Day’ where, apparently, all restrictions will be lifted – it also happens to be my birthday, so I thought I’d do a Big Juice & Blend 7-Day Reset in the preceding week – get involved at juicemaster.com People are itching for their freedom, to drop weight and take charge of their health, so this new-look issue of Juiced! magazine is packed with inspiring stories, healthy recipes – including several from my new Juice & Blend book – and ideas to improve your wellbeing. I will be at Juicy Oasis a lot this year, so if you’re coming I hope to see you. Please spread the word about Juiced! magazine as it’s FREE to download on Apple Books or Issuu, or receive a FREE printed copy with your first Juice Master Delivered order, a Juice Master juicer and blender from juicemaster.com or during a visit to a Juice Master retreat.

Lockdown certainly had its challenges and, for many, meant gaining a few pounds. So the Juice Master was pleased to help the nation out when he was invited to share a few weight-loss juice recipes on This Morning in early March. Presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary connected with Jason, who was at home in Spain, via Zoom for a quick-fire guide to three nutrient-packed recipes which the duo simultaneously tasted in the studio. Alison loved the zingy flavours of the juices while Dermot was impressed by the speed with which Jason prepped them, raising a glass to the Juice Master.

Happy juicy family We love this cute picture of Gemma Atkinson's and Strictly’s Gorka Márquez’s toddler Mia tucking into her favourite juice! Huge Juice Master fans, the couple often enjoy Juice Master Delivered plans as part of their healthand-fitness regimes. Gemma already has 19-month-old Mia on the good stuff, sharing with her Insta-fans that she regularly preps a batch of juices, reusing the iconic, little blue Juice Master 08 www.juicemaster.com

Delivered bottles to store them – as any parent knows, good preparation can be a life-saver when little ones are about to go into meltdown! Gemma shared that while she’s a ‘no fizzy drinks’ mum, little Mia is allowed her favourite juice which is a pineapple, avocado, apple, cucumber and lime recipe – just like her parents, Mia already has excellent taste! Going for a song! She’s worked with plenty of talent as one of The X Factor’s vocal coaches, and mezzosoprano Yvie Burnett recognises a quality juice when she tastes it, as this Instagram post of her Juice Master Delivered plan shows. We’ve heard of singing for your supper, but singing for your juice could just catch on…

The GREAT Juicy Escape Wow, wow, wow! Look at the size of the state-of-the-art spa which is taking shape at Jason’s incredible new resort, Juicy Escape, in the Algarve. Jason snapped a shot of the footprint of the building which he described as eventually looking, “Like a mini Eden Project,” on a recent visit. The shot gives a taster of what’s planned for Europe’s healthiest playground which is set to open with a bang on 3 September 2022 after development was slowed by the pandemic.

In fact, Jason says that even if it’s unfinished and he’s the only one making juices and using the retreat, the date is set in stone. With a list of celebrities, including Gary Barlow, Olly Murs, Carol Vorderman, Alesha Dixon and Vicky Pattison who shared their excitement at the update, and a waiting list set to open in early 2022, we doubt the Juice Master will be alone for Juicy Escape’s big moment. GET READY TO RESET 70 www.juicemaster.com 50 12

What's Jason's Juice & Blend book all about? Here's the skinny, but order your copy to read his full guide to getting the most from the plan.

First up… The F-word

Fat matters! In his new book, Jason makes no bones about the fact that 78 per cent of all COVID-19 deaths were among people who were overweight or obese, yet there is still little public focus on taking personal responsibility for our health. The average man will drop around 10lbs and woman 7lbs after a week of Jason’s Juice & Blend plan – whether it’s losing your lockdown love handles or finally taking a grasp of your long-term health, this is the moment to invest in yourself.

Quick as you like

‘What’s wrong with losing weight quickly?,’ asks Jason. It’s a wellworn quip from the medical fraternity that ditching seven pounds in a week with a juice plan is unhealthy, yet nobody blinks an eye at gaining weight with a junk-filled diet! In Juice & Blend, Jason challenges conventional thinking about what we ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’ do in our quest for good health. Read the full argument in his new book.

Just do it!

Jason provides his top tips for success and starts with a simple message – stop talking, just do it! Grab a diary and plan your detox week NOW. Have a vision and COMMIT to making it a REALITY, starting with Jason’s nutritionally balanced plan.

Mind over matter

There is no ‘willpower’ involved in Jason’s detox diets, which have everything you need nutritionally, but it IS important to get into the right frame of mind to maximise the effects the plan will have. CHOOSE health, get INSPIRED and NURTURE your body and mind – these are game-changers in achieving the results you want.

Faster, slower, smoother…

In his new book, Jason also shares his views on the best kit you can get your hands on to make your reset a breeze… and his answers might surprise you! But of course the truth is the best juicer and blender are the ones that you will actually USE…

Fresh or frozen?

Life is busy and one way to get ahead and succeed is to make and freeze a batch of juices which can be defrosted on a daily basis, but always make your blend fresh! It’s SO QUICK to whizz up your morning blend… Even better, have your Juice & Blend plan delivered by juicemasterdelivered.com for the easiest plan of all.

What are the options?

Jason’s Juice & Blend book features several bonus recipes which can be swapped with any of the blend or juice recipes, for a change during the plan. HOWEVER, it’s important to swap a blend for a blend, or a juice for a juice to keep the balance right overall AND also to stick to the same colour – so a green blend for a green blend – as the nutrients of each have been factored in to provide a rounded plan.

Have you got the balls?!

Jason’s Juice & Blend plan is satiating and provides plenty of nutrition, but we’ve all had those moments when we need a little extra… Step forward Jason’s Hunger SOS energy balls – with a range of recipes included in the book, these are super-easy to make, perfectly sized and incredibly healthy, so you don’t need to resort to processed, sugary snacks. Bosh, hunger pangs quashed entirely!

Now that you are armed with the knowledge and equipped with the gear, it’s time to turn the page and get started on Jason’s brilliant Juice & Blend plan… JUICED magazine 71 13

figured She’s defied expectations since she first appeared as resident mathematician, on TV’s Countdown, and hasn’t stopped challenging convention since. Now, at 60, Carol Vorderman is embarking on a new mission, to reset her biological age

juicy interview

I

n a world where celebrity has become everyday, Carol Vorderman is truly a legend. Incredibly, it was almost 40 years ago that the young, 21-year-old Welsh woman appeared on Channel 4’s first broadcast show, Countdown. Her big break happened after her mother suggested she apply to a newspaper ad asking for ‘a woman with good mathematical skills’. Viewers soon discovered that Carol is an incredible mathematician with a lightningfast brain. She quickly became a household name and one of the highest-paid women in Britain. After a phenomenal 26 years, she left the show, becoming a megastar with a different primetime show on ITV every night of the week. She was the first person to have two exclusive terrestrial channel contracts, with Channel 4 from 12-6pm and ITV from 6pm12noon – today it might be akin to rolling Holly Willoughby's and Davina McCall's careers into one! Off-screen, Carol has an online maths-tuition business, The Maths Factor, is an RAF Ambassador, has acquired her pilot’s licence and plans a solo flight around the world. A vibrant energy underpins Carol’s zest for life and a passion for health and fitness support her throughout. “I love my life!,” she says. “I’m enjoying being 60 and devoting this year to my health. I’m doing loads of exercise and working on a project to see if I can set back my biological age, trying all the tests and machines to benchmark my health and fitness. I’ve taken up weightlifting and walk daily. I’ve already seen a huge difference and feel much stronger – a onehour walk is an amble and often I’ll go seven-miles, then go for a

70 www.juicemaster.com 50 24

second walk afterwards. Later this year, I’m doing a big fundraiser cycle ride which ends in Las Vegas, so I want to be fit for that and be able to do the splits! It’s wonderful not to be racing against myself, as life has always been so busy. I want to be as alive as I am today when I’m 80!”

Detox queen

Nutrition is important to Carol who, having written detox-diet books herself, is a big fan of Jason’s juicing plans and has visited Juicy Oasis many times. With lockdown preventing a trip, Carol joined Jason for his first Virtual Retreat at the start of

2021, sharing her love for earlymorning yoga and raising one of Juice Master Delivered’s iconic blue bottles to the Juice Master on social media. “Growing up in the 60s, there was no processed food,” says Carol. “As a teenager, I remember buying a calorie-counter book as we started to become more nutritionally aware. Weight was never an issue during the 80s, and while I was working on Countdown I was a size 8-10, but in the 90s I got married, had children and, as my career mushroomed, it crept to a size 12-14 and I started to feel very uncomfortable with my body. “Gyms came along and I started running six miles a day so the weight dropped off. Then, in 1999, I discovered the detox-diet, eliminating wheat, dairy and sugar. I had so much more energy, my skin glowed and I slept better. As I entered my 40s, I felt on fire and had six primetime shows on all four terrestrial channels.” It was also the moment when Carol, back to a size 8, caused a storm of tabloid headlines by wearing a short, tight, blue chiffon gown – which she jokingly describes as “that dress" – to the BAFTAs. “The world asked whether women over 40 should wear a skirt above the knee," she recalls. "It sounds ridiculous now, but there was so much focus on my figure and people kept asking me how I did it, so I wrote Detox For Life, which sold millions of

copies. Watchdog tried to blow me out of the water saying it was a load of nonsense, but of course now, 20 years later, science has caught up and everything I wrote has now been proven to be correct. I haven’t weighed myself for over 20 years, but in your 50s your hormones and figure change. Last year was tough and during the first lockdown I worked seven days a week. I was driving and sitting all the time, staying in hotels where, because of restrictions, I would end up in bed with a Deliveroo. I was exhausted and by Christmas I had a face like a pudding and was a size 12, so I was more than ready for Jason’s first Virtual Retreat this year.”

On retreat

Having first visited Juicy Oasis in 2013, Carol has returned many times. “I absolutely love it, it’s the best," she says. "The setting is luxurious and I don’t even miss food while I’m there. The energy is amazing, the atmosphere is chilled and everyone gets along brilliantly – you just slot in with like-minded people. When you drop weight it’s like shedding a layer and you feel so much more energetic.

“The Virtual Retreat was an enhancement of this and a great way to spend the last lockdown. I love Jason’s talks and when he gets on his Juice Box I think, ‘Yeah, go on…’ We have a very similar background, both from singleparent families, we’ve had to work hard to get on. He never fails to make me laugh, I adore him. He’s as adventurous and mischievous as I am, in fact I could be Jason’s twin sister, we’re so alike. Juice Master Delivered makes a detox so easy and I’ll often order. Sometimes I think I’ll go mad and make a load of juices, but I never do and I’ll order instead. It just works. In fact, just like everything Jason does, it makes life loads better.” Like all that Carol puts her energy into, the results are stunning and at 60 she looks at

While the effort to rewind the years is for her own benefit she says she may share the results in a documentary or book. “I’m at the stage of life where it’s about giving back,” says Carol. “I’ve been incredibly fortunate and I love making other people happy, so if it helps someone else I’ll explain what I’ve done and the difference it’s made.” With that, she is ready to head off for her next walk and, even though it’s a grey, wet day, she radiates an energy many would love to share. Carol’s definitely figured out how to get the most from life. •

I haven’t been on… …is how one participant described Jason’s first-ever Virtual Retreats. When lockdown forced Juice Master Retreats to close its doors, Jason and his team took the world-famous detox week online – because when you can’t get to the oasis, one’s private oasis can come to you… A visit to Juicy Oasis or Juicy Mountain is an incredible experience and many guests return time and again to enjoy a magic week on retreat to reset their mind and body. But, with the UK and much of the world in lockdown and unable to travel at the start of 2021, Jason and his team came up with the ingenious idea of creating a Virtual Retreat which anyone could enjoy from the comfort of home! said...

Let’s hear it for the fellas…

‘What a fantastic week! I lost 14lbs, from 210lbs to 196lbs. I feel great and have a new sense of joy. My wife also lost 8lbs and is thrilled. Thank you to the whole community who have made this week so fun,’ Russell

Lost

14lbs! ‘Have just completed Jason’s second Virtual Retreat with my fiancé who had already completed the first Virtual Retreat. I am happy to say I’m still on the juice on day ten and I’m going for 28 days. This is the first time I’ve ever tried anything like this and my energy and strength feel better, my eyes feel bright and clear, I’m alert, no IBS or heartburn… it’s early days but no gout pain in my knee either, so I will keep going. I started at 204lbs and am now 190lbs!’ Michael

Lost

11lbs! ‘Lost 11lbs over the week and got my BMI back under 25, plus I saw great improvement in my psoriasis. Although I didn’t completely ignore work and family last week, they are going to get 110 per cent attention as my batteries are fully charged,’ Simon

‘It’s virtual, but it works. It creates a unique community with a common purpose and it was a very special week. Despite all of the current challenges both personally and professionally I have suddenly been enveloped with a sense of calm. My body has moved more than it has in months. My energy levels are improved after a bout of COVID-19 at the end of December. I’ve lost around 8lbs and will continue juicing, and more importantly I have a stronger resolve. So I am delighted, it was exactly the reset button I needed,’ Cathy

‘In February last year I had a bulging disc and sciatica which lasted until November. Combined with lockdown and teaching from home I did hardly any exercise and had no energy. I booked the retreat on a whim, ten minutes before the early-bird price ended. After a positive COVID-19 case in my bubble, I ended up having to self-isolate and the retreat kept me sane and active – I even tried rebounding for the first time! After existing on caffeine, chocolate and biscuits I have kicked my sugar addiction into touch. I feel fantastic, have lost 5.5lbs, am sleeping better, full of energy and feel so positive,’ Amy

‘The thought of doing changer online classes filled me with dread, however I was so determined to do this retreat. I embraced it and so glad I did. This really has changed my life as I had an operation a few years ago, was on steroids and piled the weight on. This week I feel like I have cleansed my insides and oiled my joints. I have slept through the night for the first time in ten years, become more flexible and active. I feel blessed to have been part of this journey,’ Julie

Missed the Virtual Retreats?

Don't panic!

The real thing is back If you weren’t lucky enough to join Jason and the team for his Virtual Retreats, book yourself a stay at Juicy Oasis or Juicy Mountain and enjoy the real-life experience this summer…

Magic mountain

Luxury afforded

Juicy Mountain in Turkey is Jason’s original retreat, a rustic haven where freshly extracted juice, daily yoga, fitness, walks and downtime are enjoyed in equal measure. After more than a year of lockdown, when it reopens, the season at Juicy Mountain will run until 30 October, so whether it’s a summer sizzler you seek or a cosy spot to enjoy early autumn, Juicy Mountain – aka Magic Mountain – is calling.

Juicy Oasis in Portugal’s heartland is as magic as its sibling and overlooks a wide, flowing river, forest and mountains. With a little added luxe, the retreat boasts an incredible spa with fantastic treatments such as its signature Rainforest Massage, cryotherapy and colonic therapy. From head to toe, Juicy Oasis is a place to immerse body and mind. Juicy Oasis reopens on 29 May and runs until 11 December.

In the hopefully unlikely event of the UK or Turkey going into lockdown within ten days of the start of your retreat, you can defer your stay to an alternative week within the next 12 months or receive a full refund. The retreats are already seeing a large number of bookings, so if you want to secure your place for 2021, call 01234 480280 or visit juicemasterretreats.com today.

family time

Q. Juicy Oasis is usually a child-free zone. What was it like to spend time together as a family at the retreat?

A. For JJ, the retreat being closed has been absolute paradise and seeing the excitement and pleasure through his eyes gave us a real silver lining during what has otherwise been a horrendous situation.

JJ has so many of Jason’s traits and he idolises his daddy. A few months ago, I randomly bought him a black t-shirt and now I have four as he only wants to wear ’the same as daddy’.

That's my boy!

As a family we all got to experience the retreat like never before. We put every rebounder out and would spend up to two hours a day jumping from trampoline to trampoline, bouncing to ridiculous children's songs. JJ’s thirst for rebounding is even greater than Jason’s! We watched movies in the cinema, played football, tennis and volleyball with some of the team and, for the first time ever, even took in some cheeky sun by the Like father, like son... pool. It was a very surreal experience having the retreat to ourselves. I have been before with JJ and stayed in our apartment I have to hide them which is connected to the retreat and tell him they are and spent most of my time in the wash if I want ensuring he was quiet, as I was him to wear anything so conscious that guests didn’t else! On that note, I Chilling with mum over a juice hear him. THE

JUICE CLINIC

‘It’s the juice!’ From common ailments to chronic conditions, time and again people discover that regular juicing improves their health. If you are struggling with symptoms, give natural juice therapy a try

70 www.juicemaster.com 50 80

natural juice therapy

What’s the problem? Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disorder featuring recurrent abdominal pain and intermittent diarrhoea, often alternating with constipation. There is often no obvious cause. IBS is very common and believed to affect around 10-20 per cent of the population, mainly in people between 20-30 and is twice as prevalent in women as men. The cause remains unknown, but several doctors have confirmed that diet plays a major role in conditions of the digestive system. During embryonic development, the same group of cells develops into the bowel and nervous system almost simultaneously. This gives the two areas of the body a symbiotic and close relationship; tension within one system can be expressed as a symptom in the other – this sympathetic relationship can work both ways, with toxins in the bowel causing depression and irritability in the nervous system, or nervousness and depression causing irritable-bowel symptoms.

Nature’s prescription • A high-fibre diet • Avoid refined carbohydrates • Juice daily using alkalising raw fruits and vegetables • Add a probiotic such as Lactobacillus Acidophilus • Pea juice, heated and served warm, has been found to help bowel health • Drink at least two litres of water daily

Digestive Aid Pineapple (peeled) 3cm slice Ginger 2cm chunk Fennel 2cm chunk Lemon ⅓ medium Pear ½ medium Fresh mint 1 small handful

Case notes: Chelsey ‘I have been incorporating juicing into my diet for two months and have begun to improve my overall health and hopefully wean myself off the medications I have needed for my chronic urticaria and terrible IBS. Although I’m only 24, I was struggling to make it through the day without one or multiple naps and even after that I was still exhausted. Since juicing, I have seen all of these things improve tremendously. I’m full of energy and my end goal is to lead a healthy life, free of medication – the weight loss is just an exciting cherry on top.’

Juice everything except the mint. Then pour the juice into a blender, add the mint and blend or alternatively chop the mint very finely, add to the juice and stir.

What’s the problem? High cholesterol is a widespread problem which can lead to blocked arteries and strokes. With high cholesterol, you can develop fatty deposits in your blood vessels. Eventually, these grow, making it difficult for blood to flow through the arteries. Sometimes the deposits can break suddenly and form a clot that causes a heart attack or stroke. High cholesterol is thought to be the result of eating foods which are high in saturated fat – usually fatty meat and fried foods. Careful attention to diet and a reduction of these types of foods can help lower levels. Obesity and physical inactivity also play a part in high cholesterol levels, so exercising on a regular basis can help to bring them back down to where they need to be. Genetic heritage could be a factor in high cholesterol too, particularly if you come from a family with a history of familial hypercholesterolemia, a condition characterised by higher-than-normal levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol.

• A pples – the soluble fibre, pectin, acts like a ‘broom’ in the blood vessels and ‘sweeps’ out undesirable cholesterol deposits. • Avocado – Australian researchers found that a diet consisting of 2035 per cent of calories from fat in avocados was better for reducing cholesterol than a low-fat diet, high in complex carbohydrates. • Grapes – research shows polyphenols in grape skins help prevent the oxidation of damaging LDL cholesterol. • Onion – eating half a medium raw onion each day may significantly help to correct thrombosis, lower LDL cholesterol and prevent heart attacks.

What’s the problem? Diabetes is a condition in which the body is unable to control blood sugar levels because of a problem with the production of insulin (produced by the pancreas). Insulin is an important hormone that transports glucose from the blood to the cells where it is then broken down into energy. With diabetes, the body is unable to break down the glucose into energy, which results in high blood sugar levels. Causes of Type 2 diabetes can be multifactorial and predisposing factors include age, ethnic background and family history. These can’t be changed, but other causes such as obesity and sedentary lifestyles can be improved.

Nature’s prescription • Diabetics should exercise caution when preparing juices to avoid any rapid rise in blood sugar levels. Too much fruit is not advisable if you are a diabetic, but in moderation it should not drive up sugar levels. If you are concerned, reduce the fruit and increase the vegetable ingredients. • Cherries – fruits containing anthocyanins help boost insulin to control blood sugar levels. • Cinnamon – add a teaspoon of cinnamon to your juices to support your pancreas. • Omega-3 – add the humble avocado or flaxseed oil to your juices. The fat will buffer the absorption of natural sugars and help keep you balanced.

Diabetes Aid

Case notes: Louise ‘I completed a 21-Day Super Blend Me! plan and am 100 per cent confident I have learned the strategies to live a healthier and lighter life. As a Type 1 diabetic, I used two daily SOS allowances when, and if, my blood sugar levels dipped or I munched a celery or carrot stick. My insulin decreased from 40 to 16 units per day as my body was no longer running on false stimulants and refined carbohydrates, and my sugar cravings totally disappeared.’

Lettuce leaves 1 handful Green string beans 1 handful Brussels sprouts 2 Golden Delicious apples 2 Carrots 2 medium Avocado ½ ripe (peeled) Cinnamon 2 heaped tsps Ice Pack the lettuce, string beans and Brussels sprouts tight into the chute of the juicer behind one of the apples; put the other apple on top. Juice these ingredients and then juice the carrots. Pour the juice into a blender then add the avocado, cinnamon and ice. Blend to perfection. JUICED magazine 47

What’s the problem? Asthma is a long-term condition affecting the airways with symptoms including breathing difficulties, chest tightness, wheezing and coughing. Atopic (childhood onset, extrinsic) asthma affects children and young adults through hypersensitivity to foreign protein such as dust, pollen, animal dander and fungi. When the allergen is encountered, the antigen or antibody reaction results in the release of histamine and other related substances that stimulate mucus secretion and muscle contraction which narrows the airways. A history of infantile eczema or food allergies is common and there are often close family members with a history of allergy/asthma. Attacks tend to become less frequent and less severe with age. Non-atopic (adult onset, intrinsic) asthma occurs later in life with no history of childhood allergic reactions. It is often associated with chronic inflammation of the upper respiratory tract as well as triggers such as exercise.

Case notes: Zheka ‘I fixed my asthma which was killing me for four years. I couldn’t sleep, I couldn't eat, I couldn’t breathe at all. An asthma nurse told me, "You’re going to die, you have to start steroids," but my husband found your movie and we took the 28-Day Super Juice Me! challenge two years ago, and I am free now! I want to thank Jason from the bottom of my heart. We recommend juicing to all our friends to lose weight or fix their health problems and they are all very happy. Juice magic!’

Case notes: Raj ‘Everything has changed. I'm on less medication, my asthma is under total control – before I was usually on at least four or five puffs of my vent each day – even my urticaria is no longer a problem at all. Plus I have loads more energy and I feel great!’

70 www.juicemaster.com 50 48

Nature’s prescription • A pples – research by the National Heart and Lung Institute found children who drank natural apple juice daily were half as likely to suffer from wheezing as those drinking it less than once a month. •B anana – in one study, children who ate a banana daily were shown to have some protection from wheezing. Bananas are one of the best sources of vitamin B6, which helps relax bronchial muscle. • Flaxseed – a source of plant-based potassium, magnesium, selenium and omega-3. Adding ground flaxseed to your juices to make them a ‘thickie’ is a great way to increase the omega-3 ratio of your daily intake.

Asthma Tonic Apples 2 Pineapple ¼ medium Celery 2 stalks Ginger 1” Raspberries 1 handful Juice all the ingredients together or hold back the raspberries and blend them in afterwards.

SKIP IT! A WORKOUT ESSENTIAL FOR BODYBUILDERS, BOXERS AND BALLERINAS, SKIPPING IS THE ULTIMATE STAMINASTRENGTHENING EXERCISE, BURNING 1,600 CALORIES AN HOUR! JUMP IN AND CHALLENGE YOURSELF WITH SOME FANCY FOOTWORK

54 www.juicemaster.com

mind, body and spirit

D

o you remember the simple childhood pleasure of jumping rope – solo or taking turns to jump, with pals turning the rope at each end until you mis-step – and how about the Double Dutch craze which saw us elevate our footwork with crazy, complex moves? Why did we ever stop? In fact, this summer is the perfect moment to rekindle your love of this low-cost, portable and highly effective workout, which builds strength, improves our cardio performance and burns fat, super-fast. And if you think skipping is just for little girls, think again. The British Rope Skipping Association is one of a cluster of international groups waving the flag for skipping as a potential Olympic sport. In fact, the craze for skipping dates back to the 17th century, when boys across Europe started to jump rope, although it was considered indecent for girls to skip in case they revealed their ankles. It was in the 19th century that it became a popular pastime for girls, and in 1983 Malcolm McLaren shone the light on Double Dutch, a skipping game he observed in New York watching the Ebonettes ‘dance’ the ropes.

It takes high levels of fitness to pull off some of the incredible skipping moves and a quick #skipping search of Instagram and TikTok reveals some incredible stunts, but even a simple rope-turning session offers an unbeatable form of exercise which costs nothing more than a quality rope. Boxers and bodybuilders have long known about skipping’s ability to help shed pounds before a contest, and an hour of jumping rope will burn up to 1,600 calories. Providing a full-body workout, you will use your abdominal muscles to stabilise your body as you employ leg, arm and shoulder muscles to rotate the rope. Even if you can’t manage such a lengthy session, skipping for ten minutes is the equivalent of running a mile in eight minutes, with far less impact on your joints. Along with stamina, skipping requires good co-ordination and provides a fantastic alternative to the treadmill or cross trainer to build muscle, bone density and cardio health, and improve heart rate and blood pressure. With the endorphins pumping, you’ll build fitness in a short space of time and soon have the ability to try some of those complex steps which seasoned skippers pull out of the bag. Turn the page for our skipping 101...

JUICED magazine 71 55

SKIPPING 101 • Start with 5-10 rounds of 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off, bouncing on the balls of your feet. Keep your joints loose and use your calves to push off – one rope rotation is a jump, so see if you can increase your count.

FROM THE TOP

• Increase 5-10 rounds with one minute on, 30 seconds off. Work up to five minutes and, instead of jumping with both feet, bounce from one foot to the other, as if jogging on the spot. • A s your confidence grows, see if you can achieve two rope rotations per jump with 5-10 rounds of 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off. • Try skipping on one foot, increasing the challenge by lifting your feet higher on each rotation. • Get the gang involved with long ropes and, as you progress, try jumping with multiple people at the same time. When you’re feeling pro, try with two ropes.

STEP IT UP Check out these series of shots of Jason showing us how it’s done with some mega-high leaps of the rope. Taken at Juicy Oasis during a Virtual Retreat earlier this year, the Juice Master took it one step further by combining skipping with rebounding on the deck at the retreat. Posting a short video to Instagram, Jason suggested it could be a new class at Juicy Oasis, to which singer Olly Murs jokingly replied, ‘Bit dangerous!’ One for the fearless, we are in awe of Jason’s ability to defy gravity, maintain balance and look this strong on the rebounder while brandishing a skipping rope – we salute you!

THE LENGTH OF IT To get the right length, stand on the middle of the rope, pull the handles up to the middle of your chest until taut. Trim as required.

70 www.juicemaster.com 50 56

Once you’ve nailed the basic moves, challenge yourself with these more advanced steps… •D ouble jump: Swing the rope slowly and double jump each rotation. •S kip jump: Jump from foot to foot, kicking the other foot forwards with each turn. •H op jump: Hop continuously on one foot, kicking the other foot out in front or behind, switching only when you need to. •J og jump: Keep the rope low and jog on the spot as the rope rotates. • High jogging: As before, but lift your knees as high as possible each skip. •S ki jump: Like a slalom run, jump from side to side with feet together. •C rossover: A boxer’s favourite. Using a double jump, as the rope comes over your head cross your arms over as far as you can and perform a higher jump to miss the rope. Start with one crossover every ten skips and increase until you can alternate with each skip.

Fish Fillet with a Fennel Seed Crust SERVES 2 Olive oil 4 tbsps New potatoes 500g/17.5oz Himalayan rock salt 2 generous pinches Ground black pepper 2 generous pinches Chives 15g or 1 small handful Crème fraîche 100ml/3.5 fl oz Lemon (juice of) 1/2 Fennel bulb 300g/10oz Pumpkin seeds 30g/1oz Fennel seeds 15g/0.5oz Free-range organic egg 1 Vietnamese river cobbler fish (or any other white fish) 250g/9oz

FISHY FACT The NHS recommends at least two portions of fish, including one of oily fish, each week. Packed with vitamins and minerals, oily fish such as salmon and sardines are high in longchain omega-3 fatty acids, which help to keep our heart healthy. White fish are low in fat, making them a healthy alternative to red or processed meat.

PREPARE

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/gas mark 4). Place 1 tbsp of olive oil on a baking tray and pop in the oven to warm. Cut the new potatoes in pieces roughly 2-3cm in size, then place in the warmed baking tray with a pinch of salt and pepper. Give the tray a good shake to coat the potatoes and pop in the oven for 25 minutes. Finely chop the chives. Place the crème fraîche in a small bowl, add the lemon juice and chives, mix well and pop in the fridge. Remove the hard end from the fennel and thinly slice.

LET´S GET FISHY

Cut the fish into four pieces. Place the ground seeds on a plate. Dip the fish into the bowl of egg and then onto the plate of ground seeds, ensuring that all sides are covered with the seed blend.

COOK

Place 1 tbsp of olive oil in a frying pan and heat over a medium heat. Add the coated fish and cook on each side for 3 minutes.

MEANWHILE

Place 1 tbsp of olive oil in a large saucepan over a medium to high heat, add the sliced fennel and allow to cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add the final tbsp of olive oil, salt and pepper to the pan of fennel and then add the new potatoes. Using a potato masher, gently squash some of the potatoes and mix well with a wooden spoon.

MEANWHILE

SERVE

WILT

Place the pumpkin and fennel seeds in the small container of a hand blender or Retro Super Blend and grind for a few seconds until they form a ‘flour’. Whisk the egg in a shallow bowl.

Place the smashed potatoes and fennel in the centre of a plate, pop the fish on top and finish with a generous dollop of the infused crème fraîche. Serve on a plate and tuck in!

Roasted Monkfish Risotto, Infused with Fresh Basil & Lemon SERVES 2 Red onion 1/2 medium Garlic 2 cloves Parmigiano Reggiano or Parmesan cheese 50g/2oz Monkfish 300g/11oz Olive oil 5 tbsps Fresh basil 30g or 1 handful Lemon (juice of) 1 Stock cube 1 Boiling water 500ml/17.5 fl oz Risotto rice 200g/7oz Crème fraîche 50ml/2 fl oz Ground black pepper 2 generous pinches Himalayan rock salt 1 pinch

FISHY FACT Loaded with protein and vitamin D, a fat-soluble nutrient that many people lack, the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish are incredibly important for our body and brain, helping to reduce the risk of many serious diseases.

70 www.juicemaster.com 50 62

PREPARE

Remove the ends and skin from the onion and garlic, then dice. Using a vegetable peeler, slice 1/4 of the cheese into thin slices and roughly chop the other 3/4. Remove any bones from the monkfish and cut into bitesized pieces. Pat the monkfish with kitchen roll to absorb as much water as possible (this will ensure that it browns when cooking and doesn’t just boil in its own juices!). Place the monkfish on a small plate and drizzle 1 tbsp of olive oil over it, making sure that all of the sides are coated. Place the basil, 3 tbsps of olive oil, the lemon juice and roughly chopped cheese into the container of a hand blender or Retro Super Blend and blitz for 30 seconds. Dissolve the stock cube in the boiling water.

COOK

Place the remaining olive oil in a large pan and place on the hob over a medium to high heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the risotto and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add 1/4 of the stock,

reduce the heat and allow most of the liquid to absorb, then repeat the process until all the liquid has been gradually added and absorbed (stirring intermittently). Add the basil, oil, lemon, cheese mix, crème fraîche, 1 pinch of pepper and salt. Stir well, remove from the heat, cover with the lid and set to one side.

FINALLY

Heat a griddle pan over a high heat, then add the monkfish and cook for 2 minutes on each side.

SERVE

Spoon the risotto into a shallow bowl, add the monkfish and finish with the remaining black pepper and cheese.

Sweet Chilli Fishcakes with a Lime, Chilli & Coriander Dressing SERVES 2

MAKE THE DRESSING

Red chilli 1 medium Fresh coriander 20g/small handful Apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp Olive oil 3 tbsps Lime (juice of) 1/2

Remove the top of the chilli, slice in half lengthways, discard the seeds and place in the mixing container of a Retro Super Blend, along with the other ingredients. Blitz for 10-20 seconds.

Sweet Chilli Fishcakes

PREPARE

Lime, Chilli & Coriander Dressing

Sweet potato 1 medium Garlic 2 cloves Spring onions 2 Red chilli 1 large Cod fillet 200g/7oz (without the skin) Almonds 100g or 2 handfuls Olive oil 1 tbsp Himalayan rock salt 1 pinch Ground black pepper 1 generous pinch

FISHY FACT Studies have found that people who regularly eat fish are less likely to experience depression. Numerous trials show that omega-3 fatty acids can boost our mood and energy levels.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/gas mark 4). Peel and chop the sweet potato into chunks. Skin the garlic. Discard the outer layers and ends of the spring onions and thinly slice. Chop the cod into small pieces. Using a Retro Super Blend, blitz the almonds for 10-20 seconds until they turn into ‘flour’.

COMBINE

Put the cooked sweet potato, garlic, almond ‘flour’, cod, spring onion, chilli, salt and pepper in a pan (set the tray to one side, but do not wash or turn the oven off). Mash, using a potato masher, so everything is combined but the mixture still contains pieces of fish. Divide the mixture into four, shape into ‘burgers’, place on the baking tray and pop into the oven. Cook for 20 minutes.

SERVE

Gently remove the fishcakes from the tray and either enjoy on their own with the lime, chilli & coriander dressing, or serve them alongside a tasty salad.

COOK

Place the sweet potato and garlic on a tray, coat with olive oil and place in the oven for 15 minutes, stirring halfway.

Sweet potato, garlic & parmesan mash

Garlic cloves 4 Sweet potatoes 2 medium Parmigiano Reggiano or Parmesan cheese 50g/2oz Boiling water 1 litre/35 fl oz Ground black pepper 1 pinch Himalayan rock salt 1 pinch

PREPARE THE MASH

Peel the garlic and potatoes. Chop the potatoes into cubes and place in a pan with the garlic. Using a vegetable peeler, thinly slice the cheese.

BOIL

Add the boiling water to the pan of potatoes and boil over a medium heat for 15-20 minutes, or until you can easily slide a knife into the potatoes. Remove the pan from the heat, drain away the water and pat dry with some kitchen roll. Add the cheese, pepper and salt, mash thoroughly.

COOK

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F/gas mark 6). Trim the asparagus and slice the lemon. Line a tray with greaseproof paper and layer the asparagus, lemon and salmon, skin side up. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Cook for 20 minutes. Serve the salmon on top of the mash.

THE

DEEP SLEEP

Fancy feeling as refreshed as you do after four hours’ sleep in just one hour? If you’re stressed or need to recharge, yoga nidra could be the answer. Just lie back and relax…

70 www.juicemaster.com 50 68

It’s a familiar scene for many of us. You’re nodding off on the sofa and yet the minute you go to bed… Boom! Your mind is racing and you’re bursting with energy to tackle all those niggly things you failed to do during the previous day. The answer could be a pre-sleep session of yoga nidra – pronounced nee-dra – an ancient, guided meditative practice where the goal is to do exactly nothing. Pioneered by yoga instructor Richard Miller, yoga nidra has been used by the US Army to treat post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain, while patients suffering from burnout and acute anxiety have benefited from sessions. Also known as yogic sleep, the practice works towards a deep meditative state between wakefulness and sleep with a withdrawal of the five senses. Danish research has shown that during a session of yoga nidra, dopamine, the ‘happy hormone’, is released, our heart rate and blood flow improve, tension and anxiety levels reduce, the nervous system calms and the whole body relaxes. Advocates have suggested that a single hour of yoga nidra equates to four hours’ sleep and, if practised before bedtime, can lead to a better night’s rest. Easy and accessible, yoga nidra requires no equipment, simply a place to lie down, typically in corpse pose, palms facing up, and to listen to the voice of a teacher as they move through the brain’s natural map of

the body, using visualisation exercises to reach a state of complete relaxation. Yoga expert Amy Fitta has worked at Juicy Oasis for four years and during Jason's recent Virtual Retreats led taster sessions at the end of each day. “Yoga nidra is a form of meditation that looks and feels like a deep relaxation,” explains Amy, “and it is the teacher’s job to put your body and mind to sleep, while your awareness – or consciousness, as we describe it in the Western world – is away.

DREAM ALOUD

"During yoga nidra, you may experience the vivid dreams we often have when we’re falling asleep, but can still hear what’s going on in the room. That’s the goal we work towards and they say that it’s when we’re in this space that we’re most open, the thinking mind or conscience is put to sleep and the subconscious mind is in control. Similar to hypnosis, this offers the body a state of deep relaxation. “During a session, our brain drops from fast beta brainwaves to theta and alpha waves, which you would typically go into during sleep. Deep sleep is the delta stage and occasionally you can even dip into this during a yoga nidra session too. “At the Virtual Retreat sessions, we spent time unwinding from the day's events, starting with some slow, gentle stretches to enable the nervous system to switch down the gears, as if in preparation for sleep. This was followed by supported restorative yoga postures which are like a massage for the nervous system.

JUICED magazine 71 69

mind, body and spirit

We then ended with a 30-minute, mini yoga nidra session for deep relaxation.” As with all yoga practice, some people may experience yoga nidra more readily than others, or find they enjoy the benefits more easily on one day than another. “There are typically two camps,” says Amy. “The first will scan through the body, area by area and, almost as soon as they lie down, are snoring away in a deep sleep. “Others can’t settle and find it hard to switch off, but this is often an indicator that your body needs it most as the nervous system is too excited, heightened and revved up. Research shows we need to deactivate the nervous system and go into our parasympathetic nervous system to heal, digest and process information and emotions, so it is worth practising until it comes more readily.”

TWO TO TRY While any type of meditation can seem unfamiliar at first, it’s important to trust in the process and, as you become familiar with the steps, relaxation will come more quickly. “One of the benefits of incorporating yoga nidra into the Virtual Retreat was that people felt relaxed in their own home,” adds Amy.

“De-stress your nervous system and, in time, you will discover the benefits”

If it seems ironic that the relaxation which yoga nidra offers evades those living a stressed or overburdened lifestyle, it’s worth considering the surrounding environment too. “Most of us are constantly connected to our smart devices,” adds Amy. “The blue light they emit keeps us stimulated, yet how often do we just sit or read a book before bed? It’s so important to adopt good sleep hygiene which involves switching off. Yoga nidra is a great prelude to sleep. However, yoga nidra can be practised at any time of the day to ease anxiety and tension and, used as a power nap, can leave you with new energy once you ‘wake up’.”

50 www.juicemaster.com 70

“We often see images of people practising yoga in a studio and think it’s the blueprint we have to follow to make yoga work, but it’s such a false idea. Comfort is the most important thing so, whether it’s lying on the floor or a bed, find a relaxing spot. If you have a high-stress job or life, yoga nidra will help de-stress your nervous system and, in time, you will discover the benefits of ‘the deep sleep’.” •

AMARANTH

Naturally gluten-free and rich in fibre, amaranth is a small seed with a fine texture. A complete protein because it contains lysine, an amino acid which is a good source of calcium for bone health, it has 13-14 per cent more protein than most grains. Add it to porridge or cereals, or pop it like corn kernels for a tasty snack.

MILLET

Rich in protein and low in starch, millet is easily digestible. It also contains silicon which helps promote healthy hair and nails, and is a good source of phosphorus, magnesium, copper and manganese. People who suffer from auto-immune or thyroid conditions should eat millet in moderation.

SORGHUM

A great substitute for wheat flour in bread and bakes, sorghum is found in many gluten-free products. Copper in the grain helps to increase the absorption of iron in the body and magnesium supports blood sugar control. Pop sorghum like popcorn for a healthy snack.

BUCKWHEAT

Technically a seed, buckwheat is cooked like a grain and can be used as a flour substitute or served as a hot cereal. Known to reduce inflammation, cholesterol and blood pressure, and support blood sugar control, it is high in fibre, vitamins and minerals. Look for buckwheat noodles as an alternative to pasta.

OATS

One of the best sources of beta-glucan, a type of soluble fibre, oats can help to lower blood sugar and insulin levels, and reduce bad cholesterol. Oats are packed with magnesium, zinc, selenium and thiamine. Look for products marked gluten-free to avoid cross-contamination.

TEFF

Native to North Africa, teff is a tiny yet powerful grass seed which can be used as a substitute for flour in bread and baked goods. A good source of protein, fibre, zinc, vitamin B6 and iron, it contains as much calcium as half a cup of spinach. Use as a porridge or to thicken dishes.

BULGUR

A brilliant heart-healthy, low-fat grain, bulgur contains beta-glucans which help to lower levels of bad cholesterol in our body. Bulgur is also high in phosphorus, manganese and iron, making it a super grain for good bone health. Use bulgur to make a summer salad or prep a batch for easy weekday lunches.

QUINOA

Actually a grain-like seed, quinoa contains all nine essential amino acids and is a great protein source for those following a plant-based diet. It also provides manganese, copper, phosphorus and magnesium and has a high level of antioxidants. Use quinoa flour to make pancakes, tortillas and quick breads.

WILD RICE

Technically not a rice but a grass, it contains twice the protein of brown rice and 30 times more antioxidants than white rice. High in B vitamins, manganese, zinc, potassium, phosphorus and magnesium, soak it prior to cooking to enjoy the maximum nutritional benefits. JUICED magazine 71 73

Gimme SOME SKIN Good skin starts with… JUICE. Time and again, people are amazed that Jason’s juice plans often come with an extra benefit, a glowing complexion! There’s no hiding the fact that our skin is one of our body’s most important organs, a waterproof shield which protects us against the outside world, packed with nerves to help our brain understand the environment around us. No surprise then that when our skin is sore, irritated or inflamed it makes us feel pretty miserable. Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne are debilitating and can sap our confidence,

affecting both our physical and mental wellbeing. We are constantly bombarded with advertising for products which promise clear, glowing, healthy skin, but many fail to deliver. As summer kicks in, we naturally shed layers of clothing and more of our body is on show, so if your skin is less than its best, follow Jason’s 30-Day Skin Deep plan (juicemaster.com/skindeep-programme) to look and feel fabulous.

Jason’s skin story As with everything Jason invests his energy into, his Skin Deep plan comes from the heart and his own experience of living with psoriasis for many years. By creating and following his own programme, he has improved his skin condition by 90 per cent. “There are many contributing factors to conditions such as psoriasis and not

everyone will get clear,” says Jason. “But before you think, ‘What’s the point of starting it then?’, let me tell you I feel like a different person. For seven months of every year, I’m 100 per cent clear of the condition and I can more than live with 90-95 per cent clearance. I cannot even begin to tell you how wonderful it feels to be

able to take my top off without people looking at me like I’ve got the plague. A skin condition affects you physically, mentally, emotionally and financially – on average, 350 people commit suicide each year because of psoriasis. I cannot explain how my plan works, I just know if you follow it 100 per cent, for many people it just does.”

TUCK IN! • Vegetables, fruits and salads – aim for 7-10 portions a day, prioritising green varieties. Weight the balance towards vegetables and limit your fruit to four pieces per day. Avoid white potatoes, peppers and tomatoes (see below). • Fish provides a key source of protein plus all those omega-3 essential fatty acids. Enjoy cooked or tinned, but avoid smoked varieties and shellfish. • Try soya, almond or goat’s as alternatives to cows’ milk, especially if you have eczema. • For snacks, eat an apple or alternatively try a Juice Master Simply Nude or Juice SOS! Bar. • Hydrate and flush toxins with 6-8 glasses of water, cold or hot with a slice of lemon, or herbal teas. • Juices and smoothies are a great way to get live nutrients into your body and help boost the condition of your skin.

LEAVE IT OUT! • The nightshade family, including white potatoes, tomatoes (including salsas, ketchup and juice), aubergines, peppers and paprika, can aggravate some skin conditions. • Oranges are a no-no, while limes, strawberries, plums, prunes and currants should be eaten in moderation. • Red and processed meats, including bacon, ham and paté. • Grains, wheat and yeast-based products can aggravate skin conditions. • Sweets, chocolate, fizzy drinks and alcohol.

CHERRY OH, CHERRY, BABY… NOTHING SAYS SUMMERTIME BETTER THAN SITTING WITH A BOWL OF CHERRIES UNDER A BIG BLUE SKY. BUT THIS SEASONAL FRUIT IS MORE THAN JUST A SWEET TREAT… 70 www.juicemaster.com 50 80

ingredient focus CHERRY BITE-SIZED Cholesterol- and fat-free, cherries are a low-calorie snack that counts as one of your 5-A-DAY. A cup of cherries contains 87 calories • 0.3g fat • 1.4g protein • 3g fibre

Cherry red, cherry-picking, cherry on the top. We associate cherries with plenty of good stuff, but perhaps the most impressive attributes of this humble little fruit are its health-giving qualities. In season from May to August, cherries come in a spectrum of colours, from the traditional dark-red Bing, to its supersweet, pink-yellow Rainier cousin, but, regardless of colour, all cherries have the same brilliant health benefits.

FRUIT WITH BENEFITS

Packed with vitamins E and C, one cup of cherries provides almost 15 per cent of our RDA of the latter, and the fruit contains anthocyanins which are believed to boost our brain health, thinking and memory. High in antioxidants and antiinflammatory compounds, the fruit’s deep-red colour stems from a type of polyphenol which helps to protect our body against several chronic conditions. Studies show that drinking cherry juice daily can help to reduce levels of bad cholesterol which increase our risk of heart disease and, separately, a 2015 study by the British Journal of Nutrition found that cherry juice can help to lower blood pressure. In a small study, 19 women with Type 2 diabetes who drank a glass of cherry juice every day for six weeks lost weight and lowered their blood pressure and blood sugar, suggesting that the fruit’s natural juice may help those living with the condition.

And the anti-inflammatory properties of cherries are said to help relieve arthritis, particularly gout, an arthritic condition caused by an excessive amount of uric acid in the blood. In 1950, a US study of 12 gout sufferers were given 1lb of cherries daily and – without exception – every participant experienced relief from the disease. The polyacetylene in the fruit is reported to be as significant as painkillers ibuprofen and naproxen in relieving inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, asthma and bronchitis. If you suffer from any of these conditions, try Jason’s cherrybased juice, right, twice daily.

EAT, RUN, SLEEP, REPEAT

The polyphenols found in cherries are also shown to have a positive effect on our gut microbiome, the trillions of micro-organisms which live in our intestinal tract and which are critical to our immune health and digestive system. A great way to satisfy a sweet tooth, cherries are packed with fibre, leaving us feeling fuller for longer, and do a great job of keeping us regular too. Cherries could even improve your fitness levels as studies have shown that runners who drink cherry juice before or after long-distance races recovered faster than those who drank an alternative. A glass of the fruit’s natural juice can ease muscle damage and pain after a tough exercise session.

Arthritic Elixir Pineapple 1/4 medium Cherries 1 large handful, pitted Celery 2 stalks Grapefruit 1/2 medium (peeled) Ice cubes 1 small handful Pack the cherries, pits removed, tightly into the chute of the juicer followed by the grapefruit (peeled) but with as much white pith left on as possible) with the pineapple (no need to peel if using a coldpress juicer) and celery. Juice the lot, pour over ice and enjoy. Alternatively, if you are not a grapefruit person, simply make the juice without it, but use a whole medium pineapple instead.

Finally, cherries contain melatonin, the hormone which helps us to sleep, so regularly incorporating the fruit into your diet can support the body’s natural circadian rhythm.

I

t has been hailed a modern miracle cure for everything from inflammation and chronic pain to supporting mental health and encouraging relaxation, and even improving skin conditions, yet acupuncture is an ancient Asian medicine which dates back over 3,000 years.

Typically, an acupuncture session will begin with a thorough consultation with your practitioner to discuss aspects of your health, followed by a physical examination. This will include pulse taking and observation of your tongue, which is a strong indicator of many aspects of our wellbeing.

Recognised by the World Health Organization and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence for the treatment of tension headaches and migraines, acupuncture involves pricking the skin with micro-thin, sterile needles at strategic points to treat physical, mental and emotional conditions. This helps to balance the flow of our life force – which in Western terms we define as energy – through specific pathways of the body to achieve harmony.

It is usually only at this point that the first needle will be inserted and, strange as it might seem, as each one is positioned it releases endorphins which the body naturally produces to support the healing process. During each session, which typically lasts 60-90 minutes, up to 20 needles may be inserted at strategic ‘acupoints’ to reignite the flow of energy through the body.

There are 360 acupuncture points on the body and 12 meridians which are our energy pathways. Removing blockages and correcting imbalances, acupuncture can be effective in tackling conditions present in the body for many years.

Minimally invasive, each needle stimulates nerve-rich areas of the skin and triggers a response to stimulate the immune system, promote circulation, prompt healing and reduce pain. Afterwards, you may feel energised or tired, as each person’s experience of acupuncture is unique.

In recent years, acupuncture facials have become a growing trend on both sides of the pond, with celebrities Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian and Gwyneth Paltrow said to be fans of a session to promote a clear, healthy complexion. Acupuncture is also used by athletes to treat sports injuries as a way to help the body heal faster. The past year has seen a rise in reported mental health problems and a study by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that depressed patients with severe anxiety can benefit from acupuncture. Some practitioners even advocate acupuncture as a preventative treatment, comparing it to exercise or taking a supplement as a way to improve our wellbeing. •

FEEL THE PRESSURE While acupuncture should be carried out by a qualified professional, these acupressure points can be manipulated to help ease some conditions. • For period pain, massage the hollow of your inner ankle • Can’t sleep? Rub the spot between your eyebrows clockwise, then counter-clockwise • For lower-back pain, press the space between the middle of your nose and upper lip
