INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DREAM HOME

RELAX. YOU’RE HOME. WELCOME TO

TUCK IN

For our first issue of TUCK IN, we ' re sharing the living room makeover at our cottage! The reasons are simple: this style of decorating is my absolute favourite. It’s a mixture of modern and rustic furnishings, artwork, and my alltime favourite: found objects from the forest and antique items from secondhand stores in our city.

Like you, I don’t buy everything from TUCK! I pull from various places to furnish and decorate my home or in this case, our cottage with items that have personal meaning to me and Robert and often tell a beautiful story. Yes, there are a lot of gorgeous pieces from Tuck, but I really wanted to showcase this room because it’s near and dear to my heart. It’s also an opportunity to share tips that will hopefully inspire you to think differently when you walk by, say, a moose antler in the woods or a secondhand store while walking uptown on your lunch hour!

In this inaugural issue, you'll see the power of wallpaper added to white walls. Also, how embracing texture and pattern with vibrant red tribal Persian rugs breathes life and colour into a space.

A soft camel-coloured sectional and matching chair add warmth, while the luxurious sheepskin 'Time-out' recliner not only adds a whole new level of ' cozy ' but also creates a constant race to see who will get into it first! (It’s usually the Bostons!)

This living room has gone through at least six different decorating iterations since we purchased this 1802 Loyalist home in 2019. It's my happy and relaxation place where no TV exists; the wood-burning fireplace is often in use, and it's simply a beautiful space to decorate.

Through the lens of photographer and longtime friend, Kelly Lawson, I hope this first publication will inspire you to think of ways to transform your own home or cottage and create a sanctuary perfect for you. And if you need any advice or creative assistance, we ' re just a click away!

This Loyalist home. although a house proper, we fondly refer to it as our 'cottage' as it serves as our summer, weekend, and holiday getaway on the Kingston Peninsula, NB

THE BEFORE

I first saw this exact room with its gorgeous alcoves on a realtor's Instagram post! It had the previous owner ' s furniture, but as it goes with interior design for me, I don't see the existing I see the space as I'd decorate and live in it. I yelled out to Robert, who was brushing his teeth that night, "Oh my god, Guy! We have to go see this house!" The rest, as they say, is history! Thanks to some awesome sellers and realtors, Kelly Decourcey and Andrew King, this room has had umpteen makeovers over the last 5 years, but this particular makeover is my favourite to date!

THE AFTER

A ROOM YOU WANT TO TUCK IN TO.

When decorating this space, I had one word in mind and one feeling I wanted to create: COZY. Over the last several years, as I’ve said above, I've decorated this space many times In fact, you may have seen it in our Holiday Lookbook 2021.

Don't get me wrong; that was SUPER cozy too. I loved the leather chairs, white sofa, chopped wood, white walls, distressed rugs, and modern bookshelves! But over the last few years, I've been drawn back to my original roots: the days when I used to go to Tim Isaac Auctions to get old trunks, Persian rugs, and ceramics I've always been a fan of colour but somehow thought a lighter, more ethereal palette would be cozier for the cottage I've now discovered there are two (and Lord knows probably 100) different ways to create a cozy cottage!

5 WAYS TO TRANSFORM YOUR

COTTAGE LIVING

ROOM INTO A COZY SANCTUARY

1. Swap White Walls for Wallpaper:

Transform bare walls into a warm, inviting embrace with cozy, textured wallpapers This simple change makes your space more intimate and welcoming. The classic stripes feature smaller, patterned stripes inside the alcoves, framing the lights and drawing attention to the decorative objects.

2. Use Multiple Rugs:

Use and layer rugs to create spatial differentiation, adding depth and a rich, tactile quality to your rooms. Typically, I would place a jute rug under these smaller Persian rugs, but in this case, I left the beautiful, patina-rich floorboards uncovered to showcase their charm.

3. Incorporate Warm, Layered Lighting:

Having various types of ambient lighting (ceiling, floor, and table lamps) creates a soft, inviting glow in the evenings (all on dimmers, of course!). More on this on page 54

4. Meaningful Original Art:

In this case, I chose three distinct portrait styles: Conceptual, Traditional Classic, and Ideological/Political. Meaningful art adds character and a personal touch to your space, making it uniquely yours.

5. Mixing Modern & Rustic Furnishings:

I chose velour-like fabrics for our EQ3 sectional and matching chair, and Australian sheepskin for the Timeout chair, adding texture and comfort The Hitchens cabinet and HumpTulip Moonshine cabinet, though new, are crafted to look historic and intentionally distressed. Décor such as

TUCK TIPS!

ceramics, patina decoys, found nests, and interior design books complete this sanctuary look

BONUS TIP:

Add Custom Cushions: Create harmony by adding custom cushions that match your existing sofa. Sometimes, we can "overdo" the cushions on a sofa or chair, creating too many patterns or textures. A few additional cushions in the same fabric, they add comfort and help reduce visual clutter

DECOYS & PINSTRIPES

Here is a beautiful vignette of New Brunswick primitive duck decoys atop interior decorating books against striking black and white pinstripe wallpaper I love black and white stripes in any form clothing, cushions, or design. These elements blend rustic charm with sophistication. The decoys reflect local heritage, and the books showcase my passion for interior design. The pinstripe wallpaper adds timeless elegance, tying everything together beautifully.

These two windows face the front garden When in full bloom, a beautiful rhododendron plant casts a gorgeous purply-pink hue into the living room. It also attracts the most stunning bumblebees and hummingbirds! I have always kept these windows undecorated, as curtains might obstruct the light A simple blind can come down at night, but I’m pretty sure we ’ ve never used it. Sometimes, though, when I’m alone at night, the black windows freak me out! In the words of Withnail, “Those are the kind of windows faces look in at ”

“My late brother used to paint the portraits of the headmasters of Hillfield Strathallan College in Hamilton, Ontario, where he taught art The last one he painted caused some concern because it was larger than all of the previous portraits. So Doug said, ‘Okay,’ and cut the bottom third of the painting off. At his funeral, his friend, Tony, presented us with the canvas,

NATURE’S SCULPTURES

NESTS, ANTLERS, AND YES, SKULLS!

Scavenging natural items like antlers, fallen branches, and wildflowers, especially for a cottage, is a wonderful way to decorate your home! It's also very affordable and reflects the beauty of our surrounding landscape.

Next on my wish list is an abandoned wasp nest

A GIFT FROM MONICA

One afternoon before the Christmas holidays, a dear client, Monica, walked into Tuck, carefully holding a large moose antler with a beautiful nest perched atop it. Monica, who shares my passion for scavenging the forest and honouring its treasures, has a beautiful collection of bird nests and also collects moose antlers, deer antlers, and skulls. She handed me the antler and said, "David and I were in the woods and thought of you. Happy Christmas." It was such a touching moment. Since then, Robert has made a painting of this photograph, capturing the beauty and sentiment perfectly.

The moose antler is pictured on page 31.

NEW PINE PIECES MADE TO LOOK OLD!

The Humptulips River Moonshine Cabinet (Four Hands): I chose this cabinet for its antique-inspired charm and practical design. Made by Van Thiel, this solid pine cabinet features diamond cutout details, wire mesh inserts, and antique-style hardware. The metal-clad top in oil-rubbed bronze and the handapplied finish give it a unique, vintage look. Plus, it’s wide but slim, fitting perfectly in my space and hiding a lot of clutter too!

The Hitchens Cabinet (Four Hands): like the Moonshine Cabinet I chose this to anchor this larger than life cabinet on the left side of the room because of the rustic patina on this solid pine, copper clad piece

Both these pieces feel like they’ve been in the cottage since 1802!

I discovered this rotary telephone left by a previous owner. As soon as I picked up the receiver, memories flooded back, and I instinctively dialed my childhood home number in Rothesay: 847-3407. The unique sound of the rotary dial is unforgettable. After bringing it inside and giving it a good clean, it now graces our decor, adding a cozy, nostalgic touch to the space The table it sits on has its own story Robert and I bought it from Catapult Coffee & Studio, supporting Outflow Ministry's vital community services.

THE PURSUIT OF PATINA

The Humptulips River Moonshine Cabinet adds a charming vintage touch to the cottage, enhancing its rustic appeal Its weathered wood and nostalgic design make the space feel even cozier and more inviting. This timeless piece not only serves as functional storage but also contributes to the warm, homey atmosphere of the cottage.

THE BEFORE

When I first saw the living room with its beautiful alcoves, wood-burning fireplace, and gorgeous rustic wide plank floors, my heart raced. The only downside was the tiny back window. Mid-twentieth-century small windows were practical for keeping the cold out However, I wanted a large picture window to connect with the back forest, creating a solarium-like feeling and a connection to nature. Replacing the tiny window with a large one transformed the space, bringing in light and a stunning view

EMBRACING TEXTURE

SOPHISTICATED DESIGN WITH TEXTURAL ELEMENTS

When I first saw the Nette table lamp online, I gasped. We ordered it immediately for the store, and it was, of course, even more beautiful in person. When Heather and I went to High Point in North Carolina, we saw the entire collection by the designer Carmen Satchel Nash / Loft & Thought and it is breathtaking. This lamp and the wallpaper were the two MUST HAVES, and I basically built the rest of the living room around these two items. The Conform “Timeout” chair & ottoman were a close second. Having textured walls, lamps, and reclining chairs, along with Persian rugs, soft velour-like sofas & chairs, is the perfect combination!

LAYERED LIGHTING

AND

ITS IMPORTANCE

In our living room, we are all about layered or featured lighting. In the evening, whether it's summer or the Christmas holidays, we spend a lot of time in the living room I opted for lighting that would be timeless or, in the case of the ceiling, a vintage vibe throughout. The Brass Oxford Floor lamp, although modern, adds a sleek touch and is a perfect reading lamp! For the two Muji lamps that sit inside the alcoves, I deliberately chose the black shade instead of a cream-coloured one to keep it moody and drama-like in the evenings. The Nette is the showstopper of the entire room This light really comes into its own in the evening. I placed an Edison-style bulb inside, and it shines like the moon inside a basket!

INSPIRED BY BOOKS

I absolutely love having great coffee table and interior design books at the cottage for two main reasons. First, they offer a beautiful way to relax in front of the fire, providing entertainment with stunning images of decorated spaces from around the world. Second, the books I choose are as gorgeous on the outside as they are on the inside, making them perfect decorative items throughout the cottage. It's like getting a twofor-one deal: entertainment and decoration all in one!
