PRELUDE

WORDS OF WELCOME

*CALL TO WORSHIP (based on Jeremiah 33:14-15 and Romans 13:11)

Leader: “The days are surely coming,” says the Lord, “when I fulfill the promise:”

People: “I will cause a righteous branch to spring up for David and He shall execute justice and righteousness,” says the Lord.

Leader: Salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.

People: Let us lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.

Leader: Let us turn to God in prayer.

*PRAYER OF INVOCATION

*HYMN Come, Christians, Join to Sing

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, The holy catholic church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen.

*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Almighty God, You love us, but we do not fully love You. You call, but we do not always listen. We often walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped in our own concerns. We often condone evil, hatred, warfare and greed. God of grace, help us to admit our sin, so that as You move toward us in mercy, we may repent, turn to You, and receive forgiveness, through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (1 John 1:9)

Leader: If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION

Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE

Leader: This is the word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

Matthew 26:17-30

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Break Thou the Bread of Life

OFFERINGS OF THE PEOPLE

OFFERTORY Bread of Life

At this table, Lord, we lay our burdens down; At your feet we humbly kneel to pray. At the foot of the cross, we contemplate the cost As we share this feast today.

Refrain: Lord, break your bread of life for me; Feed my hunger, set my spirit free; Pour out your grace on me. Lord, fill my cup from the fountain of your love. Open my eyes that I might see; Break your bread of life, Lord, for me.

*DOXOLOGY

At this table, Lord, we renew our strength; From this cup we drink of boundless grace. Teach us, Lord, how to share the bounty of your care When we leave this holy place. Refrain

We worship you, Lord of might and majesty. We pray for your guidance from above. We remember the sacrifice on Calvary. We thank you for your never-ending love. Refrain

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION

Joel Raney Chancel Choir

THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

All who profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and have been baptized are welcome to partake of the Lord’s Supper. Children who have been baptized and instructed in its meaning are also welcome to partake. There are gluten free options available at the usher stand. Please hold the bread, so that all may commune together, but drink the cup when served.

*HYMN Onward Christian Soldiers

Note: Last week we sang this tune with a gentle, peaceful text relating to Jesus as our Shepherd. How might our understanding of Jesus be informed by the contrast of singing the same tune with the traditional, militaristic text we sing today?
