CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY ANNUAL REPORT 2023

Rock Solid Kids kick off in September, started with one student and by December had six attending. The students include children from our church and their friends.

Studio 15, grades 1-5, grew to an average of 10-15 students. We divided the group into grades 1-3, and 4-5. The Scene Shop room was updated to accommodate the changes.

The Clubhouse needed a few “sensory items” to meet the needs of some children and have proved to work well with the group.

The Children’s committee provided childcare and support for the Arts on the Rock Ministry as well as band camp with DHCSM.

We had a very successful group participation for our “Connections” weekend in October. This included our sister church from Leupp.

For Christmas Eve family service, we had our Studio 15 children’s choir sing.

The Studio 15 children performed a few Christmas songs during the Christmas Eve family service. We plan to continue building our Children’s Choir to preform for our church in the future.

2024 GOALS

• Develop a vision for Children’s Ministry and a plan for executing that vision.

• Continue to train and equip members of the Committee to encourage strong leadership and accomplishment of the goals laid out in the vision, offering local, regional, and national opportunities for training to encourage more committee members to participate.

• To continue a bi-monthly Rock Solid Kids gathering for 4th & 5th graders which began in Fall, 2023.

• To hold Vacation Bible School in June/July 2024. The Committee will commit to the same week each year.

• Partner with other DHPC groups such as Music & Arts, Fitness at the Rocks, and Youth Group to draw in more families of young children to the program. • Ongoing review of the effectiveness of the Children’s Ministry program.

• To develop a strong social media presence to retain existing families using Orange’s Parent Cue and updating the Children’s Ministry section of the Church website to attract new families.

• To increase the average regular Clubhouse attendance to seven children each week.

• To increase the average regular Studio 15 attendance to 15 children each week.

FELLOWSHIP MINISTRY

• Also, this year brought us Fitness in the Rocks (Savvy Steppers and much more). Classes for a multiple array of fitness levels and interests for Mind, Body and Spirit have begun and have added to the attendance nearly every month. This program adds a level of care for our existing congregation and the community at large. Physical Fitness and Social Orientation are also strong components of the program along with lots of energy and the opportunity to meet new people both from within and outside the congregation. Nutrition has been a focus with a Mediterranean Diet demonstration, Fashion Shows, and luncheons plus healthy snacks provided by Fitness in the Rocks.

2024 GOALS

Future events to be discussed at our monthly committee meetings on the 2nd Thursday. As a committee to continue providing interesting and fun events where cross generational gatherings are encouraged and friendships defined.

With God’s guidance, to continue and support Fitness in the Rocks with its strong and experienced leadership, continue and extend our relationships with other Session committees to enhance both our Fellowship Committee and other committees, all to the benefit of the community and of the church and its congregation.

Youth with a Mission (YWAM)

Todd Haidet is serving with YWAM in Lausanne Switzerland. During 2023, Todd was a student in the school of worship and spent time working in the admissions office. During Todd’s time with YWAM, he has had the opportunity to also serve as a staff member. Todd co-led a team that traveled to North Africa where they ministered to communities of Sudanese and Syrian refugees.

EPC World Outreach (WO) Workers

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) General Assembly and the EPC Presbytery of the West provide the framework for the guidance of both global and local mission activities. Both are supported by you and have produced tremendous results. Following are missionaries that DHPC supports who are associated with EPC/WO:

Brian & Keri are now focusing on resourcing workers in the Middle East and North Africa doing member care full-time with a full case load. Brian and Keri are skilled at equipping, preparing, and supporting personnel.

Dave & Mindy Fenska serve as Global Mission Mobilizers for the three western Presbyteries.

Ed.m@ epcwo.org & nan.m@epcwo.org, ITEN (www.itenglobal.org).

Sean & Angie continue to lead the Presbytery’s global church planting project. They utilize a business platform that enables expatriates & national church planters to work in remote, unengaged Muslim communities in a developing SE Asian country through a sea cucumber farming business. Their presence continues to impact the villages with the gospel & jobs. Sean mentors & resources the church planters. The project grew in sustainability with impacts reaching beyond financial returns to social/environmental/spiritual outcomes.

John & Carleen team with Sean & Angie in SE Asia. John is the visionary and science officer of the maritime project. The sea cucumber project is the only farm of its kind in the country. These two pioneering WO couples are encouraged to see social and spiritual progress in this remote location. Groups are welcome to come and experience the project. MISSIONS

Operation Christmas Child – International Mission Support

In 2023, DHPC broke a record by donating 347 gift-filled shoeboxes to Samaritan’s Purse. The boxes from DHPC were delivered to children in Mongolia and other undisclosed hard-toreach areas. Along with an explanation of the gospel, over 100 pairs of “Shoes that Grow” were sent. Since 2015, DHPC church members have donated 2,566 shoeboxes and 836 pairs of shoes. The shoeboxes are part of a ministry to spread the gospel around the world.

Local Ministries

Chaplaincy for the Homeless: The Ecumenical Chaplaincy for the Homeless had a good year with an increase of several chaplains and volunteers. The Chaplaincy gave out over 25 bags of clothing and 2000 hygiene kits, over 1200 Spanish and English Bibles, and countless prayer manuals. The Chaplaincy conducted 50 Sunday services and at least 300 Bible studies. The Chaplaincy worked for several months to get accepted on the State of Arizona Tax Credit eligible list which should help donations get a boost. The Chairman of the Board retired in December, so the Chaplaincy is looking for at least 3-4 Board of Directors. Eight staff employees completed a 14-week Chaplain Fellowship Ministries and are now eligible for a Chaplain’s Certificate. There is room for others to attend the next class in the first quarter of 2024. The Chaplaincy accomplished 9 Baptisms and hundreds of Ministries of Presence with Pastoral Counseling. For more information, visit www.azchaplaincyforthehomeless.org.

Foothills Foodbank: In 2023, DHPC supported the local Foothills Food Bank by preparing individual bags of cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items to Foothills Food Bank neighbors. DHPC donated 75 bags each month. These “Compassion Packs” are filled with essentials like laundry soap, paper towels, dish detergent, and hand sanitizer.

Foothills Caring Corps (FCC): The mission is to “help older adults and individuals with disabling conditions who reside in the Northeast Valley – Foothills Community to remain living independently in their own homes for as long as possible. This is done through a force of volunteers and staff who provide in-home services, transportation services, community services and support. These services provide access to activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional health.” Services consist of friendly visits and phone calling, pet visits, medical transportation, group van trips, mobile meals, shopping assistance, caregiver relief, minor home repair, business correspondence and computer help, health advocacy and mobility equipment loans. During 2023, staff and volunteers provided 28,468 individual touch points to over 1,000 individuals in the Foothills community. If you would like to volunteer for or receive services from FCC, please visit the website at www.foothillscaringcorps.com.

Neighbors in Need (NIN): A collaboration of area churches and agencies working to bring connections to our neighbors in need and the agencies that provide services. NIN helps the agencies to meet needs that are not currently being met. These are challenges facing youth/ families, veterans, working adults and the elderly in our community, and ways are found to address these challenges. For more information, visit https://neighborsinneedaz.org.

MISSIONS

Troop Care Ministry (TCM): Troop Care Ministry (TCM): The mission of the TCM is “to provide troop care support, from a faith-based perspective to the local community, DHPC, and Leupp Presbyterian Church.” This mission is carried out by the TCM Team with the help of many DHPC volunteers. TCM sent over 100 care packages to active-duty personnel related to our church family that include “Daily Breads” and messages of support. Over $2,000 worth of grocery gift cards were donated to the Family Support Flight at Luke AFB, and $300 worth of water and snacks went to their Operation Kids program. Throughout the year, on patriotic holidays, TCM lined the church driveway with flags. With the help of many volunteers, TCM hosted a Veterans Day Celebration in November with over 100 attending. We brought 108 boxes of used books and cd’s/dvd’s valued at $8,804 from the Desert Foothills library to the VA hospital for their patients.

Sister Church Relationships

Mandeville Jamaica, Ebenezer United Church: Pastor Khereen

DHPC has shared a bond with our sister church in Jamaica since 2007 when we went looking for a “Church of Peace” with which to build a relationship. During 2023, DHPC sent a mission team consisting of DHPC members and Leupp Presbyterian Church members to Jamaica to help celebrate their 185th anniversary. Mission team members participated in the celebration festival, worship music and street ministry. During the celebration, six community members accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. DHPC donated sound system and multimedia equipment to Ebenezer which will improve their services and help spread the gospel in their community. DHPC plans to send a mission team back to Jamaica in the summer of 2024.

Leupp, Arizona, Leupp Presbyterian Church: Paster Calvin and Native American Ministry

We have been the Clan of Christ with Leupp for 41 years and continue to keep our relationship strong in faith and friendship. 2023, for our Leupp sister church, is a story of adjusting to a new normal with the passing of so many members due to age and illness complicated by the lingering covid pandemic. The legacy the departed leave behind are their children and grandchildren, instilled with strong faith, now stepping into church leadership roles.

Church Attendance is still down with the lifting of Covid restrictions, but the streaming audience continues to grow. When Covid first closed all gatherings, services were live streamed via I-Phone. DHPC and other supporters have helped provide Leupp with the needed technology to improve and sustain their streaming ministry. The on-line services are especially important for young families caring for their elderly who are too weak or ill to attend church in person.

We also see the revitalization of church activities like Youth Summer Camp, Leupp Music Camp, the DHPC Spring visit, the Jamaica visit with DHPC, the Hope Resurrected and Sin Ilini Singers ministry, and the “Connections” weekend. Leupp is now focusing on more youth participation in church services. A New Generation Singers has been formed with the church youth. They visited DHPC for the first time with their parents during the Connections weekend.

Desert Hills Presbyterian Church | Annual Report 2023 | Page 34

MISSIONS

Pastor Calvin is delegating much of the Sunday church service to young congregation members while he continues to deliver the sermons. The fruit of Pastor Calvin’s mentoring young leadership in the church ministry can be seen weekly with the Hope Resurrected live service posting on Facebook.

Our sister church continues to be our prayer partner. Hope Resurrected and the Sin Ilini Singers continue to be invited to other churches and camp meetings to share their testimonials and spread the Gospel with their singing. We are truly blessed to be One in Christ in the Clan of Christ together.

2024 GOALS

• To continue to focus on the Great Commission locally, as well as globally and specifically, the role that DHPC will play in supporting missionaries.

• To continue to faithfully communicate with the congregation about the activities and needs relating to the ministries and missionaries DHPC supports.

• To encourage the DHPC family to become more involved in missions to spread the love of Jesus to our community and beyond through prayer, education, participation in local opportunities, and a greater level of communication with supported missionaries.

• To continue to evaluate potential missionary candidates and organizations for DHPC sponsorship.

FINANCE COMMITTEE ANNUAL REPORT 2023

Elder: Oran Brown

Staff Liaison: Pastor Jim Noble

Members: Scott Core, Lisa Loran, Allan Watson, Robert Teal, Jenifer Zylwitis

MISSION STATEMENT

The Desert Hills Presbyterian Church (the Church) Finance Committee is responsible for encouraging financial contributions to the church by both members and others (stewardship). The committee makes the initial decision on how the Church’s funds will be spent subject to Session approval.

FINANCE COMMITTEE

As Finance Elder, I am privileged to chair the Finance Committee. The committee’s members provide the Church with the benefit of collective talents, talents that come together to bring wisdom and ability to decisions that would not be available with any one of us alone.

The Finance Committee reviews the Church’s finance statements each month when they are prepared by the Church’s accountant, Bobi Tomlon. Bobi also provides information on Church expenditures, tracks pledges, and member contributions. She keeps track of member contributions that are restricted to specific Church ministries, and she provides a statement to every member showing their contributions for the year.

The Finance Committee creates a suggested budget each year based on requests by the Church’s elders and Church staff for their ministries and areas of responsibility. The suggested budget is compared to the anticipated resources that will be available to meet budget expenses, and any changes are submitted to the Session. The committee selects individuals that will be responsible for the annual stewardship campaign, and it will provide assistance when requested or appropriate for Church ministries.

Pastor Jim Noble, an ex officio member, is essential in providing an in-depth overview of the Church’s ministries and the vision that directs the Church’s efforts in outreach and bringing God’s Word to our community.

2023 NOTABLE EVENTS

The Fellowship Center Elevator

The Fellowship Center elevator is subject to wear and tear from the elements. Session approved a project to enclose and make necessary repairs to the elevator early in the year. The congregation was asked to contribute the necessary funds to the building and grounds repairs and maintenance account to cover the expense, then estimated at around $157,000. The congregation responded within 2 days with donation of $216,000, which was highly appreciated. However, when put out for bids, the cost ballooned to over $300,000, and the Building and Grounds Committee proposed that the proposed project be cancelled. A new less exDesert Hills Presbyterian Church | Annual Report 2023 | Page 38

pensive alternative was approved by Session to provide a cover for the entrance to the elevator, and to air condition the elevator shaft. The change would provide comfort for the users and protect the elevator electronics from high temperatures.

Building and Grounds Improvements

The Charles B. Jennings Memorial Garden

The expansion of 3 new columbariums with 144 new niches, plus changes in the sidewalks and benches were completed during 2023.

Covered Parking and Solar

During the year 2 covered parking areas that incorporate solar units on the roofs were completed at no cost to DHPC. The solar will have the effect of reducing the Church’s power costs to APS over the 20-year length of the contract. DHPC will own the facilities at the end of the contract.

Sanctuary Upgrades

Upgrades to the Sanctuary lighting were completed during 2023 to improve the streaming of services and our pastors’ sermons. The upgrades were completed using funds donated for audiovisual upgrades. In addition, the sanctuary pews were refinished and recovered to renew and make seating more comfortable.

Money Management

During the year, as approved by Session, DHPC Finance moved $650,000 from our BMO Bank, N.A. accounts to a 90-day T-Bill ladder ($50,000 times 13 weekly maturities) with the U.S. Treasury. This change reduced the church’s exposure to the FDIC insurance cap of $250,000 for all BMO accounts in the church’s name. It also moved the interest rate on that money to over 5% annually from the less than 1% the bank money market pays.

2023 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

2023 Budget Results (based 12/31/2023 draft financials)

The 2023 Pledge budget was $949,746 and the non-pledge offering budget was $300,000. Actual results for the year were $950,440 and $377,559 respectively, with total receipts from all sources totaling $1,676,193. Total expenses for the year were $1,674,491 (including depreciation) leaving a surplus of $1,702. Depreciation charges totaled $280,903 which is an accounting entry to reflect wear and tear on the church facilities, and do not impact the church’s actual expenses unless incurred.

2024 Budget Campaign

The 2024 Stewardship Campaign, using the working 2024 budget approved by Session, sought to raise $1,071,014 in pledges. The actual result of the campaign was $983,399 in pledges at year end for 2024, leaving a $87,615 shortfall in the 2024 pledge budget. The non-pledge offering budget was set at $300,000 for the new year. Receipts from all sources were budgeted at $1,597,014. The 2024 expected expenses are shown in the chart. 2024 GOALS

Foundation Grant

The Foundation approved an available grant pool of $60,203 plus $13,464 for music support within the church in January 2023. While most of those funds have been granted and used, another Foundation grant will become available during 2024. The Finance Committee will work with Session to find appropriate uses for the new funds that meet the grant policies of the Foundation.

Building and Ground Improvements

Thanks to a generous $100,000 donation for infrastructure upgrades, two new phases for upgrades to the Memorial Garden were proposed. The design work for both has been completed with working drawings. Bids will be sought to determine the actual expense to complete the projects.

The hot water system for the kitchen has been upgraded to meet needs, and the AC units for both buildings will continue to be monitored and replaced as necessary. There is some difficulty in obtaining new units due to supply chain supply availability.

Budget Monitoring

The Finance Committee will work with Session on any budget requests that are outside those anticipated in the 2024 approved budget.

Replace Office Copy Machine

Our lease with Kyocera was replaced with a new lease for a newer more cost-effective model. It should reduce our printing costs substantially in 2024.

Stewardship Campaign

Finance will work to continue its stewardship work in 2024. With supportive help from Pastor Jim Noble and Associate Pastor Brett Everett, we had a productive campaign this year even though it fell short of the requested budget. We hope that the 2025 campaign will enjoy a stronger degree of congregation participation.

DHPC FOUNDATION

DHPC FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2023

The Foundation was created to provide each member and friend of the Church with the ability to provide help to the Church year in and year out far beyond our own lifetimes. This contrasts and complements giving each year to support the Church’s budget – the focus of the annual pledge drive. Contributions placed in the collection basket on Sundays (or donated via the web site) support the cost of the Church’s operation for the year in which the contributions are made. In contrast, most gifts to the Foundation become part of the Foundation’s endowment. The endowment is intended to be a source of help to the Church as close to forever as possible this side of heaven. The concept is that gifts to the Church in the collection basket will come from contributor’s current income but in contrast contributions to the Foundation will primarily come from the contributor’s life savings. Contributions to the Foundation can be made either as bequests in the contributor’s will or related trust or by means of contributions made during the contributor’s lifetime. The Foundation actively encourages every member and friend of the Church to include a bequest to the Foundation in his or her estate planning documents.

Each year the Foundation makes a portion of its endowment available for grants to the Church in response to Grant Requests made during the year by the Church’s Session. Grants made from the endowment in 2023 include: a grant to provide seed money for the new Christian Education Initiative being implemented by the Church to reimburse students for costs incurred to obtain a Christian education; a grant to cover moving and living expenses incurred by Nathaniel Everett in connection with his first year at seminary; grants to cover the cost of professional musicians who perform at the Church during the year such as the orchestral performances at the Palm Sunday Cantata and Christmas Eve services; grants to pay costs for musical instruments (such as pianos and chimes) to be used during worship services, for choir rehearsals, or for other music programs at the church; a grant to help the church build a music library; grants to encourage prospective new members to attend the Church; a grant to support Arts at the Rocks performances at the Church; a grant to supply badly needed computers and software for our Leupp sister Church; and a grant to help pay for professional advice relevant to improving Church outreach. Other grants were made from special purpose funds contributed to the Foundation. In all the Foundation made over $73,000 in grants during 2023.

At December 31, 2023, the Foundation’s endowment had a market value of $ x [presumably about $1.25 million]. The Foundation’s endowment is primary invested in a long-term diversified pool at the Arizona Community Foundation (“ACF”). The investments are managed by a team of highly qualified investment experts assembled by ACF. It is the aspiration of the Foundation that its endowment will serve as a source of perpetual help to the Church and that the real value of the Endowment will grow over time through bequests and other contributions and through long term investment appreciation.

In 2023, the Foundation developed a completely new website which is available either by clicking “Build Your Legacy” tab on the Church’s website or by going directly to [insert Foundation web address]. Our new website is designed to help the congregation understand what the Foundation is all about and to provide practical help to the congregation in preparation of their own estate plans. For example, the new website provides the names and contact information for lawyers who stand ready to help members of the congregation with their estate planning needs.

DHPC FOUNDATION

There is one downside to the good news discussed above: the size of the Foundation’s endowment has the potential to discourage future gifts (either because of a mistaken attitude that the Foundation and the Church “don’t need it” or because of embarrassment that one’s future gift would be much less than earlier larger gifts). Looking to 2024 and beyond, we all must avoid giving in to such negative views. On the Foundation side, we will be grateful that every contribution – regardless of size - will add to the Foundation’s ability to enhance our Church’s ministry far into the future. We hope that everyone will bear in mind Jesus’ teaching that the smallest gift may be the most important (Luke 21:14).

Foundation board members as of the February 25, 2024 congregation meeting are: Susie Brousseau (class of 2027), Woody Chamberlain (class of 2027), Shelly Core (class of 2026), Marsha Lindquist (class of 2026), Lisa Loran (class of 2025), Eddie Smith (class of 2025), and Allan Watson (class of 2025). The terms of the directors are staggered so that approximately one-third of the Board is up for election each year. The class year shown for each director indicates when that director’s position will next be up for election by the congregation.

Ex offico members of the Foundation Board are: Jim Noble DHPC Senior Pastor and Oran Brown DHPC Finance Elder.

Bob Kinderman served as President and a director of the Foundation in 2023. Bob reached the term limit of his directorship position as of the congregational meeting where new directors were elected on January 28, 2024. Susie Brousseau was elected at that meeting to fill the position on the Board that Bob had occupied.

The newly elected Board met on February 8, 2024 and elected: Allan Watson as President; [Shelly Core] as Vice President – Finance and Treasurer; and Lisa Loran as Secretary.
