omestic house cat behaviors are not that different from their wild feline cousins but distinctly different than dogs. Cats communicate in verbal and non-verbal ways. They are said to have at least 100 different vocalized sounds. We are familiar with a tail flick, flattened ears and arched backs. These are very recognizable feline behaviors. Why cats rub against you, sit on strangers, blink their eyes at you, knead a blanket or purr are some mystifying feline behaviors. — Cats rub against you or objects with their cheeks to spread their scent around to make them feel safe. Cats will go to the stranger who does not like them because they ignore them. In contrast, the eager cat lover will move toward them and make noises that are more threatening. — Cats will knead on a blanket, a behavior from their kitten days to stimulate milk production from their Mothers. As adults they do this when they are happy and relaxed. Cats will blink at you as a way of saying I Love You. It has been called a “Cat Kiss” as a show of affection. — A cat’s purr has been considered the epitome of contentment. Purring also occurs when frightened, in pain or labor. Researcher, Elizabeth Von Muggenthaler is a specialist in the field of Bioacoustics. Her research revealed the healing advantages from the purr. Cats purr at 25 HZ frequency which can be very therapeutic. This same frequency is used in humans to help wounds heal faster.

Are cats really smarter than dogs? I really can’t say but I do know cats have overtaken dogs as the number one pet in the USA where 60% of homes have at least one pet. Cats do a better job of lowering human stress and blood pressure than many other pets. That fact alone could mean they are truly Man’s Best Friends. Because cats are very sensitive creatures, they need to feel secure in their environments. People who understand cats and their needs, are necessary in making them feel relaxed and unthreatened in situations such as grooming, boarding and veterinary care. Be sure to check out the facilities that cater to the feline clients. Make sure they are well suited to make your cat as comfortable as possible.

Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL): Grain The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sets permissible exposure limits (PELs) for a long list of toxins and dangers that threaten the wellbeing of workers in America. Sound has a PEL of 85 decibels over 8 hours. Another example is lead; which has a limit of 50 micrograms over a workday. Finally there’s asbestos which has no allowable level; essentially meaning that a single particle could cause illness. Where should grain be on this list? Clearly, many workers handle grain. It’s planted, grown, harvested, and stored. Wheat, barley, oats, corn, sorghum, and rice are all handled on their way to markets to be sold. Grains are rolled, milled, cut, chopped, and most importantly ground. A ground grain is called flour. Mixed with yeast, salt water, and a little time creates pizza dough, which thankfully also does not have a PEL.

Are grain free dog and cat foods better than pet foods with grains? Are trans-fat free foods better than foods with trans-fats? Are saturated fat free foods better than the rest? Does stamping a label of grain free mean anything? One major issue is that marketing is often science free. The latest buzzwords that generate sales may not be based in any facts. The easiest way to manufacture a grain free food is to substitute the grain with a pea flour. Peas contain a fair amount of starch and protein (kind of like grains), and make up the nutrients and calories lost when grains are removed from the formula. Are peas and other legumes better for dogs than wheat or corn? If the claims on the bag are real, then most pets fed these diets should be living to 32 years old with excellent shiny hair coats and never have any illness. Seems a little too good to be true since most clients come in proudly announcing their grain freeness while asking what to do about Spot’s diarrhea. The marketing fad that is grain free will pass along with trans fat free and saturated fat free.

digestion Simply put, pets can digest grains. This fact was shown by a 2013 study on the canine genome by Erik Axelsson published in Nature that identified starch digestion as a key difference between dogs and wolves. In essence, along with cute floppy ears and a tendency to tolerate human touch dogs gained the ability to digest starches. But wait! What about grain allergies?

Grain allergy or especially wheat gluten allergy is called Celiac’s disease in humans. Thankfully less than 1% of Americans are so afflicted according to the CDC. However a mini industry has been created that caters to everyone who might like to try living gluten (pizza) free and is desperately needed by the 400,000 actually allergic people. The grain free fad in pet foods seems to have started around the same time as the gluten free fad. Many pet owners are trying to resolve skin problems with grain free diets. Other causes of skin itchiness and irritation need to be ruled out before settling on a food allergy. It is uncommon for a pet to be allergic to their food. Further it is rare for a pet to be allergic to a grain. Proteins are much better at triggering the immune system to create the discomfort of allergies. This means even if food allergy is identified in a pet it’s more likely that chicken or beef is the cause than wheat or corn.

Great, so pets can digest grains and are unlikely to be allergic to them. So pets need grains, right? Nope, cats and dogs can live entirely grain free lives. Cats are obligate or true carnivores, so they have no requirement for grains. Dogs are more omnivorous, but also have no requirement for grains. So why feed grains at all? The basic answer is cost. If pet foods were made entirely out of meats and fat then the cost would be prohibitive. So a balance is struck between meats, grains, and fats so that a diet can be affordable and provide the necessary nutrition for pets. For grain free diets the balance is between meats, legumes, and fats. One of the issues with using legumes is that they can count as a protein source. Certain grain free diets swing too far with using legumes as a source of protein. They do not have enough meat which creates a taurine deficiency. Taurine is an amino acid that is almost exclusively found in meats. Historically, taurine deficiency was a problem for cats fed commercial diets that were too low in meat content or especially during a prior fad that tried to feed cats mostly liver. The deficiency caused a heart disease (dilated cardiomyopathy) that can shorten lives. This disease is currently on the rise in Golden Retrievers according to Joshua Stern, DVM a veterinary cardiologist at UC Davis in California. The suspected cause is Taurine deficiency from grain free diets.

What should pets eat? Your veterinarian should have some advice on the subject. Rather than listen to marketing or panic about PELs check with your vet. There’s no one size fits all approach. Many pets have specific health needs from arthritis to obesity that nutrition can positively or negatively impact. Finding the right balance of nutrients requires a careful evaluation of the specific pet. Simple marketing catch phrases like grain free or natural are just stamped on the bag to catch attention and may not mean anything to a pet’s health. See ad on page 11

I Get by with a

Little Help from My Friends

knew I was in serious trouble and was sicker than I had ever been in my life. It was Christmas time, and all the decorations, the Christmas tree, and the joy of the holidays didn’t make my mom or me feel any better. Oh, by the way, my name is Killer, but before you jump to any conclusions, I am not a mob boss or seasoned criminal, but a gray tabby cat. My mom tried to find out why I was so deathly ill, as I hadn’t eaten in days and was drooling (something I as a proud feline am horrified to admit!). She took me to my veterinarian who had some ideas about what my problems were, including a guess that I had somehow tried to take a bite out of our Christmas tree. However, it was soon decided that I needed an ultrasound to help diagnose the cause of all my problems. Reaching out to Karen Fullerton at The Sergei Foundation, we were helped both with guidance and financial assistance that allowed me to get some answers. Following the ultrasound, or maybe what I would call a “Cat Scan,” it was discovered that I had pancreatitis, a bladder Killer & Hillary infection, and kidney

stones. I also needed a feeding tube as it all had my tummy so upset I couldn’t eat. My mom, Hillary Puckett, loves me more than anyone can imagine. However, without the help and emotional support that we received from The Sergei Foundation, I may have been left to die, and my mom would have been devastated. You see, I am not just a cat, although some would disagree. I am my mom’s true companion — providing a love that is unconditional, no matter what. Today I am back to my old Killer self! I’m chasing my toys, playing with my friend Vader, and enjoying life again as a spry, somewhat mischievous, six-year-old kitty. ---------------------------- My eye was so inflamed and sore that I could barely stand the pain. Although my dad tried medicated drops, the pain persisted. Both my dad and I realized it was time to pay a visit to my veterinarian. After that first visit, and several more days passed, my eye did not respond to the treatment and in fact got worse. I am a special little boy named Satch & Kim Satch, a Border Collie, and

the only “child” of Kim Shaver, whom I call Dad. We are a bonded pair, so naturally I was not going to be allowed to suffer. After a few more days and a consultation with the veterinarian, it was determined that I needed surgery to remove the diseased eye. Surgery, even to remove an eye, is not cheap, and my dad needed help with the expenses as well as guidance to find the best veterinarian for the job. It was The Sergei Foundation that came to our rescue. You see, The Sergei Foundation prides itself on being able to calm the fears of our humans and offer resources through its extensive network of veterinary partnerships who offer discounts, free second opinions, and other valuable services. Thanks to this wonderful organization and its veterinary partners, I returned home after my surgery and quickly adapted to having only one eye. My dad was thrilled to get the same wet kisses and playful spirit as before! The only bad part of the entire process was the humiliating experience of having to wear that ridiculous cone on my head. That part I could have done without! ----------------------------For anyone who has ever been in a loving relationship with a beloved pet, you can understand what animals like Killer and Satch mean to their owners. The old saying, “A house is not a home without a pet” rings true. The Sergei Foundation allows for that all important human-animal bond to continue, even when financial issues arise. Killer and Satch are only two stories of the hundreds of pets helped since being founded in 2009. Because of the coordinating care given to these companion pets, the people who have been helped often return to the organization as volunteers. Many of them help each year at the Triad Dog Games. The fifth annual Triad Dog Games will be held this year on May 12 from 10am until 4pm at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds off Deacon Blvd. For more information about this family-friendly event (canines included!), visit TriadDogGames.com. This is the only dog-sport competition of its kind in North Carolina, which raises funds for The Sergei Foundation to continue its mission of “Saving companion pets lives for families unable to afford life-saving veterinary care.” Each year more than 600 individuals and their

WHAT AGE IS BEST TO SPAY/NEUTER? New Legislation in Guilford County and the Veterinary Perspective

o, if you are perusing this magazine, you likely have a pet or are in the market for one. You are also probably an owner that wants to make responsible decisions regarding your pet’s healthcare. But what if I told you that an ordinance was recently passed in Guilford County that actually DISCOURAGES good judgement when it comes to spaying and neutering? A new law passed last Fall went into effect January 1, 2018, stating that any cat or dog over the age of 6 months of age that has not been spayed or neutered is subject to a $200 fine or “unaltered animal permit”. The ordinance is vague and does not specify if that is a recurrent or one time fine, and it also exempts dogs registered with certain organizations, service dogs and those “whose health would be adversely affected by a procedure”. While enforcement of this law will prove to be very difficult, as a veterinarian, it concerns me that this law was passed without regard to studies presented to them stating that spaying and neutering is contraindicated prior to sexual maturity and growth plate closure. In addition, like the tethering law that was passed previously- there should have been widespread education among pet owners and the wider professional animal community to help promote law abiding, responsible decision making. While I believe there were well-meaning intentions behind the ordinance’s creation, there are more appropriate ways to go about the desired outcome. Pet licensing and pet lemon law legislation would be effective, while still ensuring that pet owners with intact animals could be held accountable. I have been in this profession for over 30 years and the school of thought has changed in recent years. For many years, veterinarians and shelters were engrained with the idea that the priority was

to spay/neuter early, largely for population control. In addition, it was once thought that spaying prior to the first heat cycle would substantially reduce the risk of mammary cancer. A study published by Dr. Chris Zink, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVSMR in the American Veterinary Medical Association Journal, revealed the following perspectives: 1. Females spayed at 7 weeks had significantly delayed closure of growth plates as compared to those spayed after 7 months. 2. In a study of 203 agility dogs, the author demonstrated that the tibia, radius and ulna were significantly longer than the femur and humerus, respectively, in dogs that were spayed or neutered prior to 8 months of age as compared to intact dogs. 3. Male and female Rottweilers that were neutered or spayed before a year of age had 3.8 and 3.1 times greater risk, respectively, of developing bone cancer than intact dogs. 4. Spayed and neutered dogs have a significantly higher prevalence of cranial cruciate ligament rupture and patellar luxation, and hip dysplasia than those left intact. So, what does this mean? Should you spay/neuter your pet? What is the “magic” age if you are considering this procedure? There is no way to safely assign an appropriate age for spaying and neutering. Rather, delaying the procedure until the animal is sexually mature (first heat cycle) and all of their growth plates have closed would be the safest policy. Even this is an oversimplified rule, however. Conversation about the breed of the animal, disposition, use of the animal, etc. should also play a role in the final outcome. In addition, more and more pet owners are considering leaving their animals intact. This leads to the discussion of responsible ownership of intact pets and population control. The bottom line…talk to your veterinarian and make an educated decision that you, as a team, feel is best for your pet. The days of sending a dog/cat out of the shelter door with a cone and a surgical incision regardless of the age SHOULD be gone forever. As pet owners, it is now a civic and ethical responsibility to weigh options carefully and be informed.

came to RDF through a local vet’s office after she was found as a starving stray. At first she was very nervous and scared but after some food, TLC, and a warm bed, she turned into a sweet girl! She takes a bit to warm up to new people but once she realizes you just want to love her she loves to be petted and give kisses. Cassie does well around other dogs and loves to play. She still has some puppy energy so will need exercise and playtime in her new home! She will need a home that understands she is still young and had a rough start in life and is still adjusting to home life. We believe she will do well in a home with another dog or cat! came to RDF as a stray through a neighboring county’s animal control. We wish we knew more about her history, but unfortunately we don’t know anything about her last 25 years of life. We do know that Gretel LOVES feeding time and has a great nicker she uses to express her excitement about breakfast, lunch or dinner. Gretel has a current coggins, is up-to-date on vaccines, and had her feet trimmed and teeth floated. Gretel was great for the vet and farrier and is super easy to load on a horse trailer. Gretel is approximately 25 years old and we believe would be a great companion horse but is probably past her riding years. Mamma

is a 3 year old DSH. She came to us when a local veterinarian couldn’t find her a home. While Mamma is only 3 years old, she has arthritis in her back hips. She is now doing well with twice a month Adequan injections and pain medications. She is almost a brand new cat, and now is coming out of her shell and playing more and more each day! Her medications are fairly inexpensive and are giving her a great quality of life. Mamma would prefer a home with only one or so other feline friends, as she prefers a quieter space. A family was taking someone to the airport and saw her on the way to the airport. On the way back, she was still there with another dog that ran away when they stopped. They noticed that this little dog was blind and thus her name Gracie because by the grace of God, she wasn’t hit by a car while Chihuahua Rescue they were gone. Gracie is approximately 10 yrs old and weighs 4 lbs. She is legally blind but we think she can see changes in light. She is very sweet and just wants to be with you. Her eyes change colors, sometimes they’re green and sometimes golden. She has a laid-back personality and longs to be loved. Casper is a beautiful flame point Manx Siamese mix boy born about July 2017. Casper has a lion face, and a bit of the personality. He loves to cuddle and snuggle and be a lap cat. He loves to play with a fishing pole toy and hates to be left alone. Unfortunately, Tailless Cat Rescue when he is frightened or upset his instinct is to lash out, and that makes it a slow process integrating him with other pets. So right now we are recommending him as an only cat. He would do best with an experienced cat owner, especially one who is used to dealing with Siamese.
