Training Your Pet

From Obedience Dog to Trick Dog

D

By Pat Muhammad Carolina Dog Training Club

og obedience has many, many uses. Not only is obedience used in every day life, it can be used to earn your dog additional titles other than the basic obedience titles. The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title is one of the obedience titles that you and your dog may earn. In order to qualify for this title, you and your dog must complete a ten-part exam. The skills required to pass the test are things that your dog should normally do as a well-mannered dog, and consists of the following: 1) Accepting a friendly stranger - A desirable skill for everyday walks and living. 2) Sitting politely for petting - Another appropriate skill for everyday living and walks around the block. 3) Appearance and grooming - Includes brushing over your dog’s back, picking up his paws and looking in his ears, such as a vet or groomer would do. 4) Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead) - This step consists of walking your dog, adding a couple of stops and turns along the way. 5) Walking through a crowd - A helpful skill to know when walking your dog at the park or strolling through a pet store where there are several people grouped together. 6) Sit and down on command, staying in place - Your dog must be able to sit and down on command, stay until you walk out 20 feet, then wait for you to return and release him from command. 7) Coming when called - Your dog must stay while you walk 10 feet out, then come when you call him over. 8) Reaction to another dog - Your dog must be able to stop beside another dog while you shake hands with the dog’s owner, then continue on with your dog. 9) Reaction to distraction - Someone will drop something, roll an item by your dog, and maybe jog past your dog. He should not be upset by these things, but should be confident with you by his side. 10) Supervised separation - Your dog will be held by someone while you go out of sight for three minutes. This skill could be beneficial if you are out with a friend and need to run to your car for something. As you can see, most of the test items are useful for situations you and your dog may face in everyday life. Earning the CGC is a fun

way to work with your dog in many different situations. There is now a new title called the Novice Trick Dog Title. The dog must perform 10 tricks depending on what the dog can do. If your dog has a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title, they only have to perform five tricks, which may be chosen from a list of about 20 tricks. Many are a combination of obedience moves. Push-ups are a combination of sit, down, sit, down, sit, down, which a dog learns in a basic obedience class. Hand signals are a requirement for the Utility title. Your dog may go over a low jump or through a low hoop. The jumps are requirements in the Open class and the Utility class. Kennel up is having your dog go in their crate which is something your dog does on a daily basis. Fetch it is having your dog retrieve a ball which is also used in the Open class with a dumbbell. As you can see, many of the tricks are learned in obedience class and are performed on a daily basis. There are several levels of the Trick Dog Title: Novice level, Intermediate level, Advanced level, Performer level, and Elite Performer level. The required tricks get more complicated as the level changes. You can check the AKC website to see the requirements for each level. Carolina Dog Training Club offers Canine Good Citizen classes to help get you and your dog get ready to take the CGC test. We suggest that you take our Beginner I class and maybe our Beginner II class before taking the CGC class. Check our website at www.carolinadogtrainingclub.com or call us at (336) 273-8828. If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. African Proverb

By Jorge Ortega

I

t’s tough to imagine life without animals. Many of us enjoy the companionship of pets. In fact, according to a 2017 survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, 68 percent of American households include pets. These animals don’t ask for much -- food, shelter, veterinary care, and our companionship. Pets can teach us so much - compassion, empathy, responsibility, gratitude and they can help improve our emotional and physical wellbeing. Most importantly, they provide us with unconditional love! So why is it that we don’t listen (learn) from what our pets are trying to “tell” us? Why is that every day we treat each other (humans) with less respect and compassion? Why is it that we cannot forgive and stop holding grudges? Why is it that we cannot forget the past and stop worrying about the future – let’s all enjoy the present. If we really love our pets, we should be following their lead! We (humans) might not always agree, but when Shelter Director, Jorge Ortega, working we argue and with Murry, one of the long term residents disagree about of the Guilford County Animal Shelter. 12

animals and their wellbeing, attack and insult each other, animals and people suffer. Animal rescue is not just about the animals! When I started working in this field, a long time ago, our ideal shelter worker was someone who LOVED animals so much that nothing else mattered. Over the years, however, as I have become wiser, I’ve learned that we need people to make the world a better place for animals. The animal rescue world needs to understand and begin to recognize that our work is about people. If we want to raise more money, adopt more animals, spay and neuter more pets, and ultimately, save more animals…we have to work together…with people. We live in a dynamic world – both good and bad happen every day. Animal rescue sees it’s dark days but far more often, these days are filled with hope, and progress for our animal friends. We help illustrate and define the human spirit – through our empathy and compassion, but there has to be unity. We are challenged every day to heal the hurt, to fix the broken, and to rescue the lost. Regardless of the challenges we face, one ingredient is needed for all effective and successful endeavors – togetherness. Selfishness and disrespect can amplify need and loss. Unity and trust will help overcome challenges. The power in unity is the ability to look past any differences and focus on our commonality, strengths and dreams. Within animal rescue, a great strength comes from our diversity – it spawns innovation, develops solutions to problems, and unifies a voice for the voiceless. An even greater strength is – to save, care for, protect and celebrate our pets/animals. We all know we live in a “throwaway society” – together, we desperately need to encourage a healthier, more humane and responsible attitude towards animals. Too many people give up their pets too easily; too many do not understand the impact they have when they relinquish their pet to a shelter. Many

people are not as familiar to the issues, some are overwhelmed with personal challenges and are simply unable to be responsible pet owners. We can — and must — work together to address these challenges. This will involve all of us putting aside egos and petty differences and focusing on working together for the greater good, for the animals. When we fail to get along and place the focus on our differences, the animals suffer. It is critical that we recognize that everyone in the animal rescue world has a role to play. We all are a piece of a big complex, puzzle. We need all those pieces in place to realize our dreams of saving lives and of helping animals in our community.

Our community, both human and animal, is counting on us, all of us involved with animal rescue, to implement positive change for animals. If we want to see real change, let’s move on to try new behaviors that are only born from the nobility of our hearts. Let’s forget the quarrels of the past. Let’s work together, our community deserves better. We live in an amazing community, let’s prove it together!

RUFF LOVE RESCUE (Dogs) www.ruffloverescue.com or (Cats) felinefriendsnc@gmail.com was found in an old barn with her 12 puppies. They have all found homes and now it is time for this sweet 3 year old hound mix to find a place to relax and live the good dog life. Louise is shy but once she warms up she is loving and cuddly. Louise gets along well with other animals and would likely even be good around farm animals. She is such a sweet and loving soul and we hope that her forever family is reading this! Let us know and we can set up a meeting for you. Louise isn’t thrilled with adoption events and gets overwhelmed with all the commotion! Adoption donation $200. All vetting is up-to-date, she’s microchipped, spayed and on flea/tick and heartworm preventative.

Louise

She is a little explorer! Dora is super adventurous and figures out how to get in to anything. She is a little skittish with other animals at first, but given time, Dora warms right up. She is super sweet and she is a big time lovey. She is also a bit of a talker! Dora is ready for a home of her own. Will you take her home? Adoption fee is $75 or $125 for two as kittens do much better in pairs.

Prince.

is a shy boy, who takes a little longer to trust someone new, but is incredibly sweet once he feels safe. He loves to snuggle but is also content to lay beside you and chew on an antler. Much prefers a life of lounging on the sofa over traveling and seeing new places. Would benefit best in a home with a confident dog to help show him the ropes. Under 2 years old, good with kids, cats and other dogs. Adoption donation $200. All vetting is up-to-date, he’s microchipped, neutered and on flea/tick and heartworm preventative.

Looking for your Prince? Look no further! This is sweet Prince. Like a fairy tale prince, our Prince is extremely charming, not to mention he is also very sweet and affectionate! Prince loves to play and is sometimes a bit mischievous. Prince is ready for a home of his own. Are you the one to call Prince your own? Adoption fee is $75 or $125 for two as kittens do much better in pairs.

Chloe.

Here’s our cutie Chloe!! She is about two years old. Chloe is very affectionate and she loves to snuggle in bed with her foster parents at night. Chloe was the best mom to her three kittens, always loving them and keeping them safe. Chloe would probably be happiest being the only pet in the house or with one of her own babies, Christian, Prince or Dora. Can you open your heart and home to this sweet girl? Fred.

Poor Fred has been through some tough stuff and we don’t know about most of it. He was recently abandoned in an apartment when his owners were evicted. Found 5 days later, Fred was hungry, scared, nervous, and not trusting of everyone. He has come so far. He is now neutered, has clean teeth, and is fully vaccinated. We named him Fred, got him a bath and nails trimmed, and he is living a much better life. The ideal home for Fred would be one with no children and lots of patience. He’s a bossy little guy with a quirky personality. Fred is a Chihuahua mix and we love him! Call Animal Rescue and Foster Program at 336-574-9600 for more information about Fred. n

Soni. Oh, hi

Beatle. Oh, hi

there, don’t mind me, I’m just waiting ever-so-patiently for a forever family to call my own. I suppose I should share a bit about myself. I’m 2 years old, spayed and a pretty humble lady. I tend to keep to myself so you won’t hear much out of me. I’m a quiet, little girl who just wants a comfy place to settle in. Maybe you can pet me too, but only if you want to. So yeah, it would be great if you would come meet me, I’d really like to go home.

there, I’m Beatle, the most handsome Boxer boy you’ll ever meet. I’m 3 years old, neutered, and a pretty low-key kind of guy. I like to go outside and sniff all around, then snuggle down at your feet. I am an independent fellow who likes to spend quiet time with people. I’m not too much into that whole squeaky toy scene, that is just too much noise for me. If you’re looking to scoop up a calmer, quiet man then I am the one for you.

I just know that we are going to be the best of friends!

I’m fully grown, weighing in at 60 pounds of fun-loving forever friend. I am searching for an Ohana of my very own (BTW, Ohana means family, and family Always sticks together). RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com

Tynk.

Hylia

Don’t let this guy’s age fool you, he is still full of life! Tynk came to us due to his elderly owner not being able to care for him anymore. He is a sweet boy and loves to play with stuffed toys! Tynk does well with other dogs and we will be cat testing him ASAP. This little guy is still full of love to give and small dogs can often live into their later teens! Tynk would love a forever home to call his own.

is named after the Zelda Goddess! At almost ten years old, she is considered a senior kitty but cats often live into their twenties and she is still full of tortitude- don’t let her fool you! If you appreciate cats with unique looks and personality, come meet her and fall in love! She loves pets and being loved. Hylia would love to be the queen of your castle and maybe have one other kitty friend! She was declawed previous to coming to us so will require an INDOOR ONLY home.

If interested in adopting him, please apply at www.reddogfarm.com. n

If interested in adopting him, please apply at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Cowboy

is looking for his forever home! He is a sweet 3 year old male guinea pig who is enjoying his current foster home but is really hoping to be in his forever home soon. He loves playtime and his veggie treats. If interested fill out an application. His adoption fee is $20. If interested in adopting him, please apply at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Ethyl.

This adorable piggy has tons of personality and is super sweet. She came to us through our local animal shelter as a stray and now hopes to find her forever home. We do not know any of her history since she was a stray so we aren’t 100% sure of her breeding but we do know she has unusually long legs for a pot belly pig so we think Ethel is a cross of some sort. What we do know is that when she trots up to you for a scratch or a treat she will win your heart! We estimate her age to be approximately 1.5 years and she is very healthy. Ethel is current on her vaccines Please visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information. n

Sadie

is a sweet senior mare with tons of love and plenty of spunk to share with a new family. She’s approximately 25 years old and has dropped pasterns so will need to be adopted out as a companion or pasture pet. If you’re looking for a sweet lady to hug and squeeze, Sadie enjoys the attention! She was owned by the same gentleman for the past 10 years and had a lovely wooded area to live in but was tucked way back in the woods. Her last companion left her several years ago so she lived a solitary life but has thrived (after a short adjustment period) living in a small herd again. Her owner loved her but due to health reasons wanted Sadie to have a safe place to live out her life where she could receive more love than his schedule and health allowed. Sadie is around 14.3 hh, current on shots and coggins and is ready for her forever home! Visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information! n

Squeaks.

Say hello to Squeaks! This sweet kitty was brought in by a good Samaritan, very near death. We really didn’t think she had a chance. She couldn’t pick her head up and was basically unresponsive, but... we thought we would try. This fighter hugely surprised us! 24-hours of IV fluids and supportive care later, The Fort Rescue she was strong enough to stand and “head butt” and purr whenever a caretaker came in to check on her. It took over a week of intensive care before she was able to eat, but then she flourished! Her name fondly became “Squeaks” because she can’t meow as a result of her severe illness. She “squeaks” and chirps and it is adorable. This kitten is amazing and we can’t wait to see her find her forever home. Please email us at Thefortrescue@gmail.com if you are interested! n

SweetTart.

Hi, I’m SweetTart born March 10th to my wonderful mom, Peeps. Mom lost her home when it burned down. Her people tried to take her to a neighbor but she wanted to go home. AARF was called so that my litter mates and I would be born in a safe place. Mom Peeps has been good to us along with several human moms. We are a healthy, loving, playful bunch. Licorice, Bunny, JellyBean and I are ready to find our forever homes. We would love to stay together in pairs or maybe stay with mom. Caroline

was rescued when she was 9 months old and pregnant with four kittens. A kitten herself, she is very loving, and very chatty. She loves to be around people, and loves to sit next to you and have her chin scratched and belly rubbed. Elizabeth makes the funniest little chirping noises when she is happy, and she always looks like she’s smiling. She would love the chance to go back to being a kitten again, and is ready to live the good life. DOB 6/25/2017.

is simply the sweetest cat you would hope to find. She’s never seen a stranger and loves to rub her head on you and purr. She’s doing terrific with the cats, kittens and German Shepherds she has in her foster home. There’s not a lot of background info on her except she showed up at a lady’s house that had previously adopted from AARF. She was being stalked by a tom cat. The fear was that she would get pregnant or injured in the big bad outside world. She’s now safe and ready to find her perfect family.

Guinness loves everyone and everything - people of all sizes, dogs, cats, etc. He is a super happy guy who just wants to be around people. He likes going for short walks, but doesn’t go long distances. Unfortunately, Guinness was hit by a car last summer and has fully recovered, but too much walking is a bit tough on him. If you work from home or spend a lot of time around the house, he would be more than happy to keep you company.

Honey is a sweet girl who has really improved her leash skills! She becomes very attached easily and loves to be with people. She loves plopping down beside you and being a part of all your activities. Honey loves being outside, going for walks and playing fetch. Her ideal home is with someone else who enjoys the outdoors, and is looking for a companion! If you would like to meet Honey, please call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303 for more information. n

Ernie

is a mature gentleman looking for a low-key home to relax in. He is about 5 years old, crate-trained, walks great on leash, and will do tricks for treats. Ernie would do best in a home without another sibling and perhaps as a loyal companion to a bachelor. If you would like to meet Ernie, please call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303 for more information. n

Marshall is a big bundle of energy and affection! He loves going on walks, runs, playing with toys, or getting attention. He is still very much a puppy and is so excited about life! Marshall does well with other dogs but because of his energy, he may not do well with kids. This sweet boy needs an active home with plenty of room! If you are looking for a running or hiking partner, this is the perfect dog for you! If you would like to meet Marshall, please call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303 for more information. n

Romeo

is a great boy who loves to be with his person! He has done very well with two other dogs his size in foster care, although he much prefers the company of a human. He excelled with his crate-training, and can be left in a crate without incident! Romeo would do well in a home where he can get lots of cuddles. If you would like to meet Romeo, call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303 for more information. n

Adrian

was such a good house guest that he was almost a “foster fail”. He is a 70 lb. lap dog who got along well with his foster sibling. His ideal home will include several laps to cuddle up in. He’s a snuggler! He would do best in a home with older children because he is not aware of how large he actually is. If you would like to meet Adrian, please call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303 for more information. n

Brandie is a sweet puppy looking for someone to show her what a loving home looks like. She was a down-on-her-luck pup, but has lots of love to give for her first real home. Brandie is a volunteer favorite, and can often be found in a darling pink outfit, just waiting for the right person to come along and choose her. If you would like to meet Brandie, call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303 for more information. n

Lewis and his brother Clark are the great explorers, in fact Clark found his way to a new furrever home. Lewis is still exploring. When they came to their foster homes, they explored the entire kitten room before claiming it as their own. Their favorite place to hang out is in the linen basket in the laundry room. Clark now hangs out with Boone…the other explorer brother. They love to play Triad Independent Cat Rescue with the toys and, of course, all of the other foster kittens in the house, but when they are done carousing around, their favorite place is in their foster mom’s lap taking a snooze. Lewis tested negative for Felv, FIV, Heartworm, is up-to-date on his vaccines and will be neutered prior to adoption. Hey guys! Izzie here. I’m a 10 month old, 65 lb. Golden mix. I am a happy girl now because I was rescued from a life where I was outside all of the time, and was surrounded by too many animals. Sissy.

Winnie

I am Sissy, a laidback girl with a gentle meow and beautiful glossy fur. I love to be petted and have my head and chin scratched. My fur is velvety and I have the most striking coloring on my face. While I don’t really like to be picked up, I do enjoy sitting next to you to keep you company. I am the most active in the morning and early evening and little stuffed mice are my absolute favorite toys to play with! I love to lounge and window watch...do you have a window for me to claim?

is a loving, faithful dog who is active during the day, but at 8pm, she turns into a pumpkin and just wants to cuddle. Hiking, running, and swimming are a few of her favorite activities. She’s extremely smart--she’ll ring a bell on the door to let you know she needs to go out. She knows “sit” and “shake” and will go to her crate as soon as you give her the command. Winnie is very loyal and protective but has anxiety about the well-being of her “pack”. The fewer people in the home, the less stressed she will be. She’ll make a wonderful companion for a family, couple or single person with older children or teens and she loves playing with other dogs. A fenced in yard would be ideal, as well as some obedience training.

Tucker

Seymour

is an energetic and playful kitten who loves being around his person and other animal friends! He’s not one for being held, but will give you kisses as he holds your face. He enjoys playing with his canine and feline foster siblings while running around the house and would love to have a four-legged companion in his forever home. Tucker is very smart and will need an adopter willing to play with him to help him expel that energy!

is a sweet boy who may be a bit shy at first, but once comfortable, is loving and playful. He is quite the handsome cat with his smooth, harlequin coat and his mesmerizing yellow eyes. He gets along well with other cats after slow introductions and is in a foster home with dogs. He is neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all vaccines and litter box trained. If you’re looking to add a quiet, loving and playful feline to your family, Seymour is the cat for you!

Sophie.

Jupiter.

Hi, I’m Sophie, an American Pit Bull Terrier mix. I’m loving, loyal, and my fosters say I am extremely cute and smart. I sit, lay down, roll over, give paw, and wait until my mom says it’s okay to eat my food. I like to walk and play outside, and love to go swimming! After playtime, I love a good cuddle and nap. Crates make me a little nervous so I much prefer snoozing on the couch while you’re away. Making new canine friends is so exciting that I will bark at other dogs until I figure out they just want to be friends too. I’ve never met a cat before, but because of my energy, I would probably do best in a home without one. Who’s ready to take me on the adventures of our lifetime?

I am Jupiter, hear me ROAR! Well, actually, I don’t so much roar as I do rumble but it’s because I’m happy! My foster mom says I’m very smart and learn things quickly. You probably would too if treats were involved! I love playing fetch, tug-of-war and taking nice, long naps. I am all about pleasing my favorite humans! I know how to sit and patiently wait for a command. Because of my energy, I’d probably do best with older children and adults but with ongoing training, I’m sure I’d do well with the little ones. I absolutely love exploring the great outdoors and finding a forever home with other dogs to play with would be absolutely amazing! I’ve been waiting nine months for my forever home, but hope to find them soon.

Paisley.

Please let us introduce you to Paisley! She is a very special girl that is approximately 4 years old. At only 36 pounds, she is probably a mix of Boxer and some type of small Shepherd. Paisley is housebroken and can be left free roam but is crate-trained if you prefer. She loves chew toys, knows basic commands, and is good with other dogs as long as they are not too high energy or dominant (she prefers to be the Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue boss!). She is good with older children but tends to try to “correct” the younger ones like many herding dogs do by nipping. Paisley loves being with people and is a First Class Snuggler! Duke is a 6 year old gentleman from the Onslow County Animal Shelter. We don’t know his background but suspect he spent the majority of his life outside. Duke is very smart, even tempered, and he’s eager to please. Duke will need a patient family who will help him blossom.

Lilly Mae is a 2-½ year old, 40 lb. Treeing Walker Coonhound mix. She has such a beautiful face and is gentle as can be, but she is also extremely shy. She loves to be out in the yard, playing with her toys and with the other dogs. Lilly would need a home with a great deal of Juliet’s House Rescue patience and with a fenced yard. When you win her trust she will be forever loyal. Contact Juliet’s House Animal Rescue at rfjg2903@bellsouth.net for more information. n

Wily is a sweet little 7 year old, six lb. male Yorkie. He is a low-maintenance little gentleman who is happy just to have a warm lap to sit on and a toy to play with. Vortex

is a stunningly handsome dog that loves to run! This enthusiastic boy is a free spirit that needs an owner willing to give him the patience, exercise, and understanding that his breed needs. Vortex is a 3-4 year old Shepherd/Husky mix that is always ready for his next big adventure. However, Vortex is very much a lone wolf and needs to be in a home without any other pets. He is neutered, up-to-date on his vaccinations, and microchipped. His adoption fee is only $65 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. n

Montana

can catch a ball but she just can’t seem to catch herself a break. Through no real fault of her own, she keeps finding herself back at the shelter. Montana is a happygo-lucky girl that has the most heartwarming smile and soulful eyes. She loves to play with her toys and go for walks. Her adoption fee is $50 and includes her spay, vaccinations, and microchip. Montana is positive for heartworms but has already started treatment. Please call the Davidson County Animal Shelter at 336-357-0805 to learn more about her. n

Freddy

Pablo & Picasso

may not have a pedigree and he may have been an obedience school dropout but if you don’t judge him for his imperfections then he won’t judge you for yours. He doesn’t care if you weren’t head of your class or if you don’t have a perfect credit score. Just give him unconditional love and he will return it to you. Freddy needs to be the top dog in a one dog home. Because of his energy level, a home without kids or one with older kids would be best. Freddy is neutered, microchipped, and fully vaccinated.

Merlot.

Likes: sleeping in sunbeams and belly rubs. Dislikes: being dressed up in cute outfits, being talked to like a baby, and chaos. Missy is a quiet lady that is looking for a home that’s as laid back and mellow as she is. She doesn’t like a lot of excitement and noise. Missy is 7 years old and is looking for a relaxing retirement home to spend her golden years.

If curiosity is a cat’s downfall then this guy’s in trouble. Merlot is quite the busybody. He must be in everyone’s business and know everything that’s going on. Scout

is a sweet, handsome 71 pound Lab mix, 3-4 years old. He is healthy and fit, with the happy confidence of a family dog. He seems to be house-trained and is cratetrained. He loves to play and fetch. Scout has lots of energy but also enjoys being a lazy guy after a good walk or play session. He does not have much experience with other dogs but seems excited to meet new ones. Adoption donation $175. Visit www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org for more info. n

Clark

is a self professed mama’s boy Chihuahua who only wants one thing – his very own special human who will adore him and treat him like the precious little boy he is! He is a tiny 7 pounds and 10 years old. He loves to be touched and held though can be a little shy with strangers. Clark is crate-trained, has not had any accidents, is fine with other dogs, and walks nicely on the leash. Adoption donation $100. Visit www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org for more info. n

Kipper

is a baby doll bundle of fluff! He is 12 pounds and 10 years old. He is a darling pup who is friendly and affectionate. He does a spin and happy dance when he sees the leash since he loves walks. He is fine with other dogs, and is an easygoing boy overall. He has one leg with an old deformity or injury so he drags it a bit but has no pain and he likes to use it for balance. He can wear a little sock or bootie when walking on coarser pavement. Adoption donation $100. Visit www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org for more info. n

Humane Society of the Piedmont:

well, what da ya know?

A

t The Humane Society of the Piedmont, our mission is a little different than most animal welfare agencies ... we often spend our time talking about what we DON’T do. “They are a part of the Animal Shelter, right?” Nope – we are an independent nonprofit organization that does not accept surrendered animals or offer animals up for adoption. We support the shelter’s success and partner with Animal Services when we can, but we are not a municipal agency. We actually support shelters all around the Piedmont by providing low cost spay and neuter surgeries to shelter and companion animals alike. Most of the shelters we serve are in rural areas of North Carolina where there is little access to these services, resulting in an epidemic problem of animals running at-large, stray and feral. We performed nearly 9,000 spay and neuter surgeries in 2017! “They are a part of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and get funding from them, right?” No – any organization can call itself a ‘Humane Society’. Humane Society of the Piedmont is not at all related to or associated with the HSUS and does not receive funding or marketing support from them and never has. In fact, most Humane Societies around the country do different things – from animal advocacy to rescue, foster and adoption to running a spay, neuter and general wellness clinic, like us! “What if I need to surrender my pet, or have lost my pet and want to see if he has been found and turned in?” or “I can go there to adopt a dog or cat, right?” No, ma’am (see the first paragraph). Although we do have adoptable animals at our facility for a short time each day (for their sterilization surgery or vaccines!), many of the animals here belong to rural shelters and local rescue organizations. We use our 14-foot climate-controlled box truck to transport up to 60 animals to our clinic for surgery before returning them to their home shelter the next day. Dogs, cats, puppies and kittens who come here for surgery are made more adoptable after their spay or neuter surgery, and most shelters and rescues won’t adopt animals out until they have had the sterilization procedure. Half of our surgical patients are not shelter animals, but companion animals who are the favorite furry family members of people who live right here in Guilford County. We offer over 100 appointments per week to our public pet owners who want to do what’s right for their dog’s or cat’s health. We also offer healthy pet wellness services six days a week that range from vaccines to heartworm and flea/tick prevention to nail clippings and grooming. And we do it all at a low cost! Our clinic (Planned Pethood) is our best-known program, but our pet owner assistance and shelter diversion programs deserve some attention too. For example, our Fill The Bowl food assistance program distributes 1,000 pounds of dry dog and cat food through our food bank partners at Greensboro Urban Ministry and Salvation Army of High Point, 1,000 pounds a week! If we can help pet owners who are going through tough times keep their animals instead of having to make the terrible decision to surrender them to the shelter, then we have done our job. We are always looking for food donations and other food banks to partner with

By Erin Stratford Owens, Executive Director Humane Society of the Piedmont

in order to make sure everyone can have a healthy companion animal in their home, no matter their income level. Humane Society of the Piedmont’s Furry Friends Fund financial assistance program works with full service veterinary practices to assist pet owners who cannot afford to care for a pet with emergent needs – the events that no one plans for, like an animal who is severely hurt or hit by a car, or an animal who develops health problems that can be treated. So many pet owners have to make the heart breaking decision to euthanize their pet because the do not have a way to pay for very expensive critical care for an animal who would otherwise live a long life. Furry Friends Fund helps low income pet owners who may otherwise have to euthanize their beloved pet. Instead of misperceptions, we hope people will proclaim, “I didn’t even know you HAD those programs! How wonderful! How can I help?” The answer, my friend, is just call or email us. Contact us through Facebook, or our website, www.hspiedmont.org, or give us a call at 336-299-3060 and we can connect you to services if you need them, or to donation or volunteer opportunities as well. Together we can end animal homelessness and euthanasia.

Allie here, just stopping in to let you know that I am STILL waiting for my knight in shining armor to come sweep me off my feet. Not an easy task, mind you, as I am quite nimble on my toesies. I enjoy spending my time lounging about in the play room on only the most luxurious of blankets, and having the staff here scratch that sweet spot right behind my ears. I am 1 year old and already spayed. So, come out wherever you are my valiant knight! Ask for me, Allie, at the Guilford County Animal Shelter!
