kicking a man. This caused people to yell and defend the accused woman, showing by videos taken that was not the case. Another Trump supporter decided it was a good idea to wear a Trump hat and walk through the protest. The man began to say racist slurs and punch protesters and then act as if he were responding to a threat. The protesters took down the fences and jumped over bushes, running towards the hotel entrance to get closer. Eggs were thrown and the police pushed and grabbed the protesters to keep them away from the hotel. One officer began to help protesters get over the bushes. As the convention neared its end, so did the rally. One high-level officer began to talk to other policemen about their next actions. Their plan was to begin pushing the protesters away from the Hyatt to disperse the rally. One student asked the policemen why they hurt the citizens when their duty is to protect them, receiving silence as an answer. Another student stood in front of a policeman with a sign that read, “Capitalism Kills.” Once the rally began to end, arrests were made. One protester was injured and five were arrested. The rally began
A Note from our Editor-in-Chief We’ve made it, folks. The San Mateo Hi staff proudly presents the last issue of the 2015-2016 newspaper. Every month, we put forth the utmost effort to cover all events relating to school, entertainment, opinions, sports and even more throughout the year, and we sure hope you’ve enjoyed it. This issue is special in that it covers many—but by far, not all— notable seniors who’ve contributed to the school community in great ways through their years as a Bearcat. We hope you enjoy, share, and perhaps have a laugh. Congratulations to all who are graduating this year as well—you’ve made it so far, and your hard work has produced tremendous fruits from your labor. I truly believe all of you will end up where you belong. We Hi staffers have been constantly improving the quality of our paper through photos, writing and design alike; our website (thebearcat.net), our Instagram feed (@SMHSnow) and our Facebook page (fb.com/ SMHSnow) give constant updates on what happens around school. From the staff’s collective contributions and effort, I’m proud to say that the PBS NewsHour has made the Hi one of its student reporting labs. Though I, along with many other seniors on the staff, will be parting the pages of the Hi this year, this paper will continue to represent the thoughts, opinions, and voices of our Bearcat community. It’s extremely difficult for me to imagine my life without being a part of this fantastic, ever-changing newspaper staff. Every year in these four years, I learned (so many new things) and befriended so many people I probably wouldn’t have ever talked to otherwise. This staff has grown to work as a team and become family. And so, I’m grateful for such wonderful staff members, both new and veteran, and how the quality of our paper has improved throughout the year. I can’t wait to see each staffer improve with their experiences. And, I can’t wait to see how the San Mateo Hi will grow. I look forward to it. Tiffany Lee Editor-in-Chief
Bearcats Attend Anti-Trump Rally Current and former SMHS students joined demonstrators on April 29 outside the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame to protest Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s visit there. “No Hate In The Bay” and “La Raza Unida Jamás Será Vencida,” shouted protesters on the street outside the hotel. Others held posters with slogans like “F*** Trump” or “Dump Trump,” while some held up Mexican flags. “I don’t like his hateful, racist, homophobic and sexist comments like that Mexican men are rapists,” said a student who did not want to be identified. Many police departments showed up to keep the rally in control and Trump supporters also came to the event to confront the protesters. The protest started around 8 a.m., only filling one lane of the street at first. But the size of the rally gradually increased, blocking traffic. Fences were put at both sides of the street to prevent cars from hurting the protesters, but protesters began to block Trump supporters from entering the hotel to hear Trump. One incident involved a Trump supporter accusing a protester of
