Every holiday season, San Mateo High holds one of the largest canned food drives in the nation. The 2016 Canned Food Drive (CFD) took place from Nov. 10 to Nov. 28 and the goal was to collect 100,000 pounds. This year, bearcats raised a grand total of 105,664 pounds, beating the goal. Every year, tutorial classes compete for which class can raise the largest amount of pounds. This year, Ms. Moore’s tutorial, composed of seniors, took first place, with a total of 6106.19 pounds. In second place was Ms. Pappas’s senior tutorial with a total of 4887.26 pounds. Mr. Ikeda, who had a junior tutorial, was third place, with 4597.55 pounds. Fourth place was Mr. Pirie’s mixed-grade tutorial, with 4507.38 pounds, and fifth place was Ms. Seebode’s sophomore tutorial, with 4480 pounds. The top freshman tutorial, Mr. Labbie’s, came in sixth place with 3410.38 pounds. All of the donations from the drive went to the Second Harvest Food
Bank and the Samaritan House. The donations help make large contributions to San Mateo County, where according a 2014 study from kidsdata.org, the rate of children living in food insecure houses is 16.1 percent in San Mateo. Ms. Cowey, who teaches Leadership, is in charge of the CFD. She, like many others, is very pleased with the 2016 results. “We are incredibly grateful for your support of this year’s Food and Fund Drive. There are so many people to thank for the great results this year. Thanks to all of you for all you did to help so many,” said Ms. Cowey. Mallorie Jenne, sophomore, was one of the many bearcats who participated. “I think we did a good job this year in the Canned Food Drive, since we reached our goal this year. It feels good knowing that my donations in the drive are helping someone in need,”said Mallorie. Overall, the 2016 Canned Food Drive was a success. SMHS got the beat and beat its goal once again. Hopefully, it will continue to do so in the future.
