PROVENANCE

The Cecil B. DeMille Estate, a paragon of Hollywood history, boasts a provenance as illustrious as the legendary filmmaker himself. Originally designed by Architect B. Cooper Corbett in 1913, this sprawling estate witnessed the birth of cinematic masterpieces under DeMille’s visionary direction after he purchased it in 1916. Its very foundations are imbued with the echoes of Golden Age glamour, hosting luminaries from the silver screen in opulent gatherings that defined an era. In 1920, DeMille expanded his estate’s narrative by acquiring the Dodd residence, famously known as the “Chaplin House” having been leased for a time by Charlie Chaplin. It is rumored that DeMille collaborated with renowned architect Julia Morgan, and orchestrated the melding of the two residences, crafting a harmonious union with a beautiful glass hallway. This architectural masterpiece became the backdrop to countless Hollywood tales. DeMille resided in this famed estate until his passing in 1959. The estate retained its cinematic allure under the careful maintenance of the DeMille family until the late 1980s when it underwent a transition of ownership. Various proprietors held the estate briefly until Richard Grossman and Lisa Lyons acquired it in the late 1990s. In the early 2000s, architects and designers Tichenor & Thorp undertook a meticulous restoration, preserving the estate’s historic charm. In 2017, the estate found itself in the hands of its current owner, continuing its storied legacy. The Cecil B. DeMille Estate stands today as a living testament to the golden age of Hollywood, an architectural marvel woven into the tapestry of cinematic history.
