personal statement:

Currently, in my third year of an architectural design course at QUT, I am looking to gain either part time employment, work experience, or any role that may be available in order to expand my knowledge of, and to satiate my desire to start building a career within the profession. Having partially completed a degree in Urban Planning, and majoring in the same, as part of my Architectural degree, my aim is to graduate in two years with a dual degree. I have had a passion for design since I was a child; architecture became my career of choice at around the age of five. As such, I have always attempted to involve myself in as many design and team orientated activities as possible - understanding the future requirements I may have to face as an architect. I have had experience with most graphical and CAD programs since the age of 14, and like most design centred individuals, drawing and sketching has been a hobby of mine for as long as I can remember.

why we should work together ! Fantastic team player, highly personable and able to see everyone’s side of the story and accept other opinions. Extremely hard working, and a work ethic that is able to put the task at hand before any other needs, (i.e. sleep). Passionate about architecture, with a strong desire to learn, and advance within the field. Good understanding of design theories and principles, paired with the ability to easily visualise and think in three dimensions. Good technical skills allow me to put my knowledge and ideas into a compelling visual argument, and thoroughly thought out design. Fast learner, persistent, pride in appearance and great desire to make a good impression.

the task : Prescribed as a design assignment in the second semester of my third year, our task was to design a highrise development, set in the year 2020, within a provided locale - in this case, Zhongshan, a semi-tropical city currently experiencing rapid population growth, and facing many extreme theatrical difficulties for the purpose of the task.

The specific restrictions and difficulties applicable to the topic locale are as follows:

2020 provided the site with a record amount of rainfall something that has been prevolent in recent years, and can be expected to continue into the future

Due to varying factors around the world, there as been a tenfold increase in fuel prices within the area - fossil fuels are slowly being abandoned.

Despite many other economic, and social changes within the area, environmental factors have remained the same; the macro-climate is equal to that of 2013.

Despite the rainfall, water saving measures have not been successfully implemented, and there is the potential for a possible drought in the future.

Public transport is to be encouraged; as commuter traffic struggles to cope with the rising fuel costs. It is expected public transport will be the predominant method of travel.

the process : By analysing the brief, I decided that the best approach to designing the structure was to construct three seperate structures - each centred around a different ideology, important to high density development. The first, would be habitable area, the second, community and green space; and lastly, sustainable and passive design. This method of design allowed me to see what qualities should be favoured, which qualities should be abandoned, and ultimately, combine the three structures into a well-rounded development. These stages are as shown:

HABITABLE AREA

GREEN SPACE

SUSTAINABILITY

the client : The required task, stated that the potential client was any of the shareholders that may be considered to possess an interest in the potential development. May they be a current land owner, surrounding business owner, a prospective home owner, or simply a potential tennant. As such, the building must aim to be designed around every facet and sub-category that may fall under the above, and more. For instance a prospective home owner may be disabled, have several children, or a dependant parent. The building was in no way shape or form to favour one demographic over another.

objective : CONNECTIVITY SUSTAINABILITY COMMUNITY ADAPTABILITY PASSIVITY

the outcome :

YOU DON’T BUY AN APARTMENT YOU BUY A BLOCK OF LAND Chinese family structure is a foreseeable and plannable structure - bound by the one child laws, and governed by strict social disciplines, centering around the mutual living habits of up to three generations at once. Typically, a family will have one child, the parents will work, and the grandparents will oversee the childs route to and from school, their food and nurturing - in return the grandparents will be nurtured in their old age. For this reason, the following apartments where centred around this idea - allowing them to expand or contract internally, depending on the plan of its occupants - by simply inserting lightweight - prefabricated walls into predetermined slots, utilising the onsite service elevators. Apartment types are chosen on a 5, 10 , and 15 year plan, allowing the occupant to govern the outcome. The advantages of this modular style of construction are many - however, the following stand out: By allowing an occupant to retain their siting within a community and retain their surrounding infrastructure, community and family values are reinforced. A saying goes that it takes a village to raise a child - and this method of retaining occupants without displacement is an attempt at creating a loving and nurturing soceity that are educated in the processes of sustainable and environmental design - hoping to change the problems our next generation will face.

3 STUDIO 2

20m

Studio apartment - this is a non expandable apartment, the spaces within are set, yet cleverly designed to maximise space within. Each of the studio apartments are situated in pairs as opposed to being single standing like the other apartment types. This was done so as to increase the amount of rentable area, and see a return on the clients investment. This apartment was designed with a single, student, or a young couple in mind.

TYPE ONE 2

90m

Apartment type one was designed with the needs of a young family in mind. This apartment form starts of as a single bedroom, with large lounge room, only to expand by propping up light weight partition walls to form a two bedroom house. This was envisaged as a home for a young couple, in which they could expand the apartment before having a child, or choose to live in a slightly more spacious apartment.

4 TYPE TWO 2

120m

Apartment two is a roll-over from the style of apartment two. Starting where apartment type two left off; it is a two bedroom apartment that can expand into a three bedroom, and back to a two bed, as needed. It is designed with the entire life cycle of the family in mind, starting with marriage, and ending in the parents nurturing the grandparents of the family.

STUDIO WOODFORD the task : The Woodford Folk Festival at present, houses performers, staff, guests and tourists in rusty caravans, tents, and make-shift accomodation. The brief was to design permanent accomodation, in the hope of creating an inspirational space, complete with studio and communal space, integrated into the current physical and ecological infrastructure of Woodford. The Woodford project allowed us to design a space for performers and visitors through exploration of residential design, on a small, yet, unique scale

“Zhongshan is situated in the Pearl River Delta Region of Guangdong Province, on the west bank of the estuary of the Pearl River. It is geographically connected with Guangzhou(capital of Guangdong Province) on the north and in close proximity to Hong Kong and Macao. Railway transportation to other parts of the country is also convenient with the railways starting in the nearby Guangzhou.”
