architectural statement The brick is pure in form and idea - it exists to be efficient, adaptible, and to be able to evoke such emotion that has inspired to create spaces which are both warm yet robust, timeless, yet contemporary. It is these facts, and the simplicity of brick that forms the concept of 27 Smith Street. The resultant dwelling is efficient in regards to its orientation and plan. The elongated plan allows every habitable room views or access to the large back garden, and optimises cross ventilation. Brick screening has been applied to the eastern facade, allowing dappled light to penetrate bedrooms in the morning, additionally acting as a thermal mass more effective than glazing, yet retaining permeability, in addition to creating a striking elevation. A double cavity brick wall is situated on the western facade, regulating internal temprature whilst providing privacy to the shortest setback. To the north and south double height voids have been created to inspire uplifting and light spaces above both the entrance and living spaces, whilst drawing daylight at key times of day, into the lower floor. is adaptible in the way spaces have been designed. The family can feel connected yet seperate at the same time. Viewports are created so glimpses can be seen of every social space and the user from another, voids of reflection fall above or adjacent to areas of activity, allowing an acoustic or aromatic connection. Additionally a guest area caters to visitors, providing them with every amenity they may need away from home. It is these inclusions that have deliberately created space that will adapt to the needs of an evolving and multi-generational family, providing each member with the opportunity for privacy or inclusion. 27 Smith Street

Lastly, the design evokes emotion in the way brick has been integrated into its context to create an uplifting, and welcoming residence. By ‘bleeding’ the open space in to the living areas, the harsh linearity of a threshold has been broken down, blurring the lines between in and out. The back garden flows over the typical linear boundaries, forming natural mounds of zoysia grass adjacent to the living area. At the entrance, a brick screen provides speckled lighting during the day to the internal courtyard, whilst acting as a soft lantern at night to the surrounding street, both taking from, and giving back to its context. In summary 27 Smith Street is simple - yet like the brick, by knowing how to use both the material, environment and tools one is able to construct something of efficiency, adaptibility, and emotional inspiration.

Smith St House centers around the idea of the house being in the garden, and a blurred boundary between in - and out. Coupled with the ultimate idiom of nurturing family - it seemed natural to marry the two concepts. The mounded zoysia grass rolling in to the lounge and dining area, forming a natural seat together with the shaded juliette balconies adjacent to bedrooms two and three complete this pairing of two strong concepts.

Smith Street House recognises the need for each generation of the family to have private space - yet feel connected at the same time. Typically for adults looking to feel connected yet separate, during times of entertaining. For this reason, clever viewports have been added throughout the dwelling. vFor example, adults may be seated in the internal courtyard of the house with a clear view to the garden and their children, yet a child cannot see through to the adult perhaps restraining them from joining in to the adult’s space and guests.
