‘Chicago Med,’ ‘Chicago Fire’ and ‘Chicago P.D.’ return to cable this fall
With approximately 2.6 million Americans calling Chicago home, it makes sense that many a television series would decide to place their focus on the home of the Bears, the Cubs and the White Sox. Some of the most popular television to capture the essence of the Windy City, though, must be Dick Wolf’s (“Law & Order”) iconic One Chicago franchise.
Now several years into each of Wolf’s established series, One Chicago returns to NBC as a whole Wednesday, Oct. 1, as “Chicago Med,” “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.” make their Season 11, Season 14 and Season 13 premieres, respectively.
The franchise, “which spans 36 seasons and 728 episodes ahead of the fall 2025 premieres” (per ScreenRant), first marks its return with the Season 11 premiere of “Chicago Med,” the last series to join the One Chicago franchise (of those still airing). Having first premiered in 2015, the medical drama currently boasts 201 episodes across its 10 seasons and will be adding an additional 21 episodes to its total count this season, albeit without a few fan-favorite characters.
With regard to Season 11, series showrunner Allen MacDonald (“Body of Proof”) says he plans “to take everything a step further but still be on the same path,” as reported by Parade. “I told the writers that in every episode [of Season 10], I want everyone to cry in every episode, and I want everybody to laugh in every episode. I want to continue that emotional torture for the audience as much as I possibly can, but take the characters in different directions.”
A few characters will be missing from the plot, however, as Marlyne Barrett (“The Wire”), who played Maggie Lockwood; John Earl Jelks (“New Amsterdam”), who played Dr. Dennis Washington; and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut (“Star Trek: Picard”), who played Dr. Naomi Howard, are confirmed to be written out of the show. While Lockwood reportedly left the series due to “personal reasons,” very little has been reported as to the reason behind the fictional doctors’ departures.
In addition to the staffing changes at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, much of the character development in Season 11 will fall upon the shoulders of actress Sarah Ramos (“The Bear”), whose character must now parse with the knowledge that she carries the gene for GSS Prion, the degenerative disease that killed her mother.
Another One Chicago series featuring a major life change is “Chicago Fire,” the franchise’s flagship series starring longest-running cast members Taylor Kinney (“The Forest,” 2016) and Christian Stolte (“Law Abiding Citizen,” 2009), airing immediately following “Chicago Med.” Kinney’s character, Lt. Kelly Severide, is often a main focus of “Chicago Fire,” but last season’s attention was largely due to his evolving relationship with Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo, “Blood & Oil”), who (spoilers for the Season 13 finale) announced her pregnancy at the end of last season. Although the couple, known to superfans as “Stellaride,” had been planning to adopt, their plans changed when Stella became pregnant.
Otherwise, Station 51 continues to change headed into Season 14 as its mysterious new chief, Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney, “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” 1997), settles into his role as beloved Boden’s (Eamonn Walker, “Oz”) replacement.
Finally, “Chicago P.D.” returns to NBC with perhaps more peril than the rest of Chicago’s first responders. (Season 13 spoilers ahead.)
After Sgt. Voight (Jason Beghe, “Monkey Shines,” 1988) orchestrated an assassination against corrupt deputy chief Reid (Shawn Hatosy, “Animal Kingdom”), the entire Intelligence Unit is in danger of retaliation and professional reprimand. As the situation gets increasingly dire for Voight himself, rumors have been flying about a possible replacement — perhaps one in the form of Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer, “As the World Turns”), who is reportedly returning this season for a “redemption” (per ScreenRant).
Jason Beghe stars in “Chicago P.D.”

An all-star cast is suspected of ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ classic corner
BY JAY BOBBIN
Agatha Christie’s literary mysteries have gotten many movie and TV adaptations, but one of the best is director Sidney Lumet’s 1974 version of “Murder on the Orient Express,” which Showtime Family Zone presents Wednesday, Oct. 1, and is currently streaming on Paramount+. Albert Finney makes an excellent Hercule Poirot as the sleuth boards the title train merely as a passenger, but he soon finds himself drawn by a friend and executive (Martin Balsam) into leading the investigation after a fellow traveler is brutally killed aboard the locomotive.
Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman (an Oscar winner here), Jacqueline Bisset, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Sean Connery, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller, Anthony Perkins, Rachel Roberts, Richard Widmark and Michael York also are on board — with Lumet making superb use of confined conditions to yield a classy and engrossing result. The picture’s success inspired a number of other Christie-based films, but this one has a style of its own, extending to a marvelous music score (from the very first notes) by Richard Rodney Bennett.
“The Simpsons” - Season 36 (Sept. 28)
There’s always fun to be had in Springfield — especially when the Simpsons are involved. Releasing in tandem with the network premiere of the series’ 37th season, this batch of 18 episodes sees the eponymous family celebrating birthdays, tackling escape rooms, encountering new friends and even causing some spooks, in “The Simpsons” 35th iteration of their annual Halloween special: Treehouse of Horror.
“Dancing With the Stars” - Season 34 (Sept. 30)
Hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough, this competition makes its return once again, showcasing glitz, glamor, drama and unbelievable talent. This season, Corey Feldman, Scott Hoying, Robert Irwin, Andy Richter, Alix Earle, Dylan Efron, Whitney Leavitt, Danielle Fishel and Elaine Hendrix will take part in the competition, among many others.
more retro rewinds
“The High and the Mighty” (MGM+, Sunday, Sept. 28): Though “Airport” largely is considered the benchmark of airplane-themed disaster movies, the category actually had an earlier start with this 1954 drama produced by John Wayne, who also stars as the tragedy-haunted co-pilot of a passenger jet that develops trouble over the Pacific Ocean. Claire Trevor, Laraine Day, Robert Stack (who would be in 1980’s “Airplane!” later), Jan Sterling, Phil Harris, Robert Newton and David Brian also are in the cast. Dimitri Tiomkin’s music score, with a memorable theme that Wayne whistles, won an Oscar.
“Annie” (Turner Classic Movies, Sunday, Sept. 28): The sun will come out tomorrow, according not only to many meteorologists, but also the title character in director John Huston’s highly entertaining 1982 version of the stage musical based on the “Little Orphan Annie” comic strip. Aileen Quinn has the title role as the plucky orphan who finds a home with wealthy Daddy Warbucks (Albert Finney), though the scheming Miss Hannigan (Carol Burnett) is in on a scheme to disrupt the youngster’s happiness. Bernadette Peters, Tim Curry, Ann Reinking, Geoffrey Holder and Edward Herrmann also are featured; besides “Tomorrow,” songs include “Maybe,” “It’s the Hard-Knock Life” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.”

Packers, Parsons bring new edge to Cowboys, Prescott
As the 2025 NFL regular season continues to unfold, Week 4 brings the Dallas Cowboys together with the Green Bay Packers at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Sunday, Sept. 28. Kickoff airs live on NBC.
The NFL rarely lacks drama, and Week 4 brings one of this season’s most intriguing storylines, marking the first time Micah Parsons will face his former team, the Cowboys, after a stunning offseason trade that sent the premier defender north to Green Bay.
League-wide, Parsons is considered a premier defender, bringing elite production (28 per cent pass-rush win rate, 251 pressures, 310 pass-rush wins since 2021) to a Packers team that finished only sixth in the league last season in both yards and points allowed.
Since his Packers debut in Week 1 where he recorded a sack, Parsons’ immediate impact has already drawn comparisons to the historic signing of Reggie White in 1993, setting expectations for this season sky high.
Green Bay now boasts one of the NFL’s deepest fronts, pairing Parsons with elite edge rusher Rashan Gary, while the secondary is anchored by safety Xavier McKinney, who recorded eight interceptions in what was a breakout season for him in 2024.
Meanwhile, for the Dallas Cowboys, the message is simple: replace their former star while trying to find a way to contain him. Against the Packers, the Cowboys will need to rely heavily on their offensive line in order to allow Dak Prescott to find and exploit quick passing lanes.
While Prescott and the Cowboys have remained steady on offense through four weeks, finding ways to generate and disrupt the team’s opposing quarterbacks without Parsons will be closely watched.
Full name: Micah Aaron Parsons
Birthdate: May 26, 1999 (26)
Birthplace: Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Height/weight: 6-3/250 pounds
Team(s): Green Bay Packers (2025-), Dallas Cowboys (2021-2024)
Honors and achievements: NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year (2021), 4x Pro Bowl (2021-2024)2x First Team All-Pro (2021, 2022), Second Team All-Pro (2023), Big Ten Linebacker of the Year (2019)
Ethan Hawke of “The Lowdown” on FX: Though he’s known principally for his movie work, he had earlier starring roles in the series “The Good Lord Bird” on Showtime and “Moon Knight” on Disney+.
Kathleen Munroe of “Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent” on The CW: She appeared on NBC and Peacock’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order: Organized Crime” in different roles than the one she has in the franchise now.
“The truth is, I didn’t have to do a ton of soul-searching with this one. I just felt like I knew what it was pretty quickly. ...What Brad’s [Ingelsby] doing really beautifully and unapologetically is saying there are consequences. We’re not going to glorify all this.” — Tom Pelphrey of “Task” in an interview with Variety.
“I feel like the show that we’ve made in Europe, both in France and Spain, feels like that original show [“The Walking Dead”]. I started that way, and I always wanted it to end that way, and I feel like we’ve done that with this show. I have a satisfied feeling.”
— Norman Reedus of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” at San Diego Comic-Con 2025.
Solution on page 18.
“It was really cool to see them [Steve Martin and Martin Short] crafting their comedy — how nuanced it is, the brilliance of finding the funny in a really simple line or action. They can turn something so small into something hilarious, understanding what will make it funny.” — Logan Lerman of “Only Murders in the Building” in an interview with Men’s Health.
