stars in “The Lowdown”

The real story: Citizen reporter sheds light on the darkness in ‘The Lowdown’

Southwestern dust covers a lot of truths behind mysterious tales in Oklahoma. One perhaps foolishly fearless citizen journalist, however, is dead set on sweeping his way to the bottom of things in the new FX series “The Lowdown,” premiering Tuesday, Sept. 23 on the network, and streaming the next day on Hulu. Ethan Hawke (“Moon Knight”) stars as Lee Raybon, a self-taught reporter with an obsessive interest in skeletons hiding in a powerful Tulsa, Oklahoma, family’s closet.

Devoted to his truth-finding mission, Lee gets beat up, knocked out, taken hostage and threatened in the official trailer for the upcoming series. Hawke is perfectly sleazy as Lee, who lives in the rare bookstore he operates when he isn’t following the trail of one of his conspiracies. As described by FX, “while Lee’s no idealist, he’s fiercely committed to exposing corruption and unearthing the city’s hidden rot, even when it puts him at risk.”

However, Lee’s commitment to the greater good leaves him lacking in other areas of his life. His 14-year-old daughter Francis, portrayed by “Skeleton Crew” actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong, is often the one left behind when truth comes calling. Despite her father’s proclivity for absenteeism, Francis longs to follow in his footsteps and go where her curiosity leads her.

The case that starts this particular one of Lee’s spirals centers around the Washberg family. Following the publication of Lee’s exposé on the local bigwigs, one unsavory member of the family meets an unfortunate, suspicious end. Dale Washberg’s (Tim Blake Nelson, “Poker Face”) alleged suicide doesn’t sit right with Lee, who starts following a trail of breadcrumbs left by the dead man that points in a different direction than the official story.

Dale’s widow, Betty Jo (Jeanne Tripplehorn, “The Gilded Age”), piques Lee’s interest when her grief over her late husband quickly sends her closer to her brother-in-law, whose local political profile is heating up. Gubernatorial candidate Donald Washberg (Kyle MacLachlan, “Overcompensating”) is paid a visit by Lee in a public urinal of all places in the series trailer. In another scene, the two exchange pointed words, both onto each other.

Up against a family with all the resources in the world to take him down and keep Lee from reaching the ultimate truth that they want to stay hidden, one mysterious man has got the unorthodox journalist’s back. Marty, portrayed by seasoned scene stealer Keith David (“Duster”), pops up at random to encourage Lee in his Washberg investigation.

Also starring in “The Lowdown” are Kaniehtiio Horn (“Letterkenny”), Siena East (“The Sex Lives of College Girls”), Scott Shepherd (“True Detective”), Tracy Letts (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”), Macon Blair (“Oppenheimer,” 2023), Killer Mike (“Billions”), Cody Lightning (“Echo”), Michael Hitchcock (“Black Monday”) and Peter Dinklage (“Dexter: Resurrection”).

“The Lowdown” comes from the creator of the Peabody Award-winning FX dramedy “Reservation Dogs,” Sterlin Harjo, who wrote, directed and executive produced the new series. Bringing another story of Oklahoma to FX, Harjo was inspired by a real person, very close to home, when writing Lee.

Harjo told the Los Angeles Times in an interview in August, “the story is fictional, but the character was inspired by someone I worked with named Lee Roy Chapman at This Land Press magazine. He was very much a soldier for truth and I would ride shotgun and make these videos about the underground, unknown histories of Tulsa.”

Chapman founded the Center for Public Secrets to house neglected stories of Oklahoma’s history, including the video series he and Harjo worked on, appropriately named “Public Secrets.” About the series, Harjo said, “it was about a pent-up need for truth in this city. That push to tell the truth and find truth and tell our story and create a narrative around us. It gave us and the city an identity, something to hold on to.”

The STREAM Scene

“Hotel Costiera” - Season 1 (Sept. 24)

Starring “Grey’s Anatomy” alum Jesse Williams as former Marine Daniel “DD” De Luca, this brandnew series transports viewers to a luxury hotel on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, where Daniel begins an investigation into the hotel owner’s missing daughter, who vanished a month before his arrival. As Daniel digs deeper into his surroundings, he quickly discovers that the wealthy guests — and the hotel’s employees — have countless secrets to hide.

“Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery” (Sept. 21)

Go behind the scenes of the legendary all-women music festival, with director Ally Pankiw’s brandnew documentary. During its three-year run, Lilith Fair shared a message of equality, dismantling the long-held belief that women’s presence in popular music should be kept limited. Short-lived but impressively impactful, Pankiw now revisits the longstanding effect Lilith Fair had on generations of musicians – many of whom share their stories throughout the documentary.

“Crime Scene Zero” (Sept. 23)

From creators Yun Hyun-joon and Hwang Seulwoo, this brand-new reality series invites its players to immerse themselves in the world of criminal investigations, as they take on the roles of detectives and suspects dropped in the middle of a complex case. Utilizing subtle clues and their sharp wits, the detectives must expose the culprit among them.

J. Fox goes ‘Back to the Future’ classic corner

Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox in “Back to the Future”

It’s always fun to look back at a movie that’s so original, it has endured as a pop-culture staple ever since, and “Back to the Future” remains such a picture in its 40th-anniversary year. Freeform shows the 1985 comedy-fantasy from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin company on Sunday, Sept. 21, and Monday, Sept. 22, with Michael J. Fox — who already was enjoying television popularity on “Family Ties” — adding movie stardom as Marty McFly, a teen skateboarder and guitarist who gets a very surprising opportunity to travel back in time. His literal vehicle for the journey is a drastically enhanced DeLorean car, engineered by scientist “Doc” Brown (Christopher Lloyd), and the circumstances enable Marty to oversee the relationship between the two people destined to become his parents (Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover). Featuring the hit theme song “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis and the News, the film delivers enormous and clever fun under the direction of co-writer Robert Zemeckis (“Forrest Gump,” 1994); it extended to two sequels, the first of which also will be shown by Freeform immediately following the original film.

“Marvel Zombies” (Sept. 24)

The dead walk. The living fight. When a zombie plague consumes the Avengers, a new generation of Marvel heroes rises, racing across a shattered world to stop the super-powered undead before all is lost.

more retro rewinds

“Gunsmoke” (MeTV, Monday, Sept. 22 through Friday, Sept. 26): As part of a 70th-anniversary tribute to the iconic Western series, which was a staple of the weekly CBS lineup for 20 years (1955-75), a week of specially selected episodes boasts notable guest stars. A major example is Monday’s choice, featuring movie icon Bette Davis as a woman with a long-standing vendetta against Marshal Matt Dillon (James Arness). Other stories include roles for Ron Howard (Tuesday), Leonard Nimoy (Wednesday), “The Wizard of Oz” legend Margaret Hamilton (Thursday) and “Batman’s” Adam West (Friday).

“Up the Down Staircase” (Turner Classic Movies, Wednesday, Sept. 24): Teachers had a big movie year in 1967 with Sidney Poitier’s “To Sir, With Love” and this involving comedy-drama, an adaptation of Bel Kaufman’s novel with Sandy Dennis — then fresh off her Oscar win for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” — as a novice educator who faces a variety of challenges from those in her New York high-school English class. Most of the pupils are played by teens who were actual students at the time, lending a real authenticity to the picture (and testifying to Robert Mulligan’s directing skills). Jean Stapleton, who would become “All in the Family’s” Edith Bunker a few years later, and Eileen Heckart also appear.

Hamlin, Bell, Larson among heavyweights in Round of 12

The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs continues as drivers get set to return to New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Louden, New Hampshire, for the first time since 2020 for what is slated to be an exciting Round of 12 kicking off Saturday, Sept. 21, with all the action airing live on Fox.

The Cup Series playoff picture is quickly narrowing, and with the Round of 12 set to begin at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the intensity is turning up amongst the remaining teams.

Among the favorites is Denny Hamlin, the veteran Joe Gibbs driver who continues his pursuit of the only remaining achievement missing from his already legendary NASCAR driving resume — the elusive Cup Series championship.

Hamlin, who signed a multi-year extension with the team earlier this summer, has collected four wins during the 2025 regular season, reinforcing his status as one of the sport’s most consistent performers in the field.

Entering the Round of 12, Hamlin will be looking to continue his streak, with three New Hampshire wins already under his belt — especially as the series enters a crucial three race stretch that includes the Hollywood Casino 400 and the Bank Of America Roval 400.

While Hamlin is a heavy favorite to win it all, it won’t be an easy path to victory. Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell remains one of the most dangerous drivers in the field with multiple victories this season, particularly on short tracks. Kyle Larson is also a serious contender, with six career top five finishes at New Hampshire.

Full name: James Dennis Alan Hamlin

Birthdate: Nov. 18, 1980 (44)

Birthplace: Tampa, FL

Height/weight:

6-0/170 lbs Team(s): Joe Gibbs Racing (2006-present) Honors and achievements: 3x Daytona 500 winner (2016, 2019, 2020), 3x Southern 500 winner (2010, 2017, 2021), 3x Can-Am Duels winner (2008, 2014, 2017) Coca-Cola 600 winner (2022)

“It delivers. It’s got a great pulse. It’s moving, it’s exciting. And at the same time, yes, you’re going to get your heart torn out. ...We empathize with these people, we relate to them, and it’s totally engaging, because it’s cops and robbers. It’s the chase, danger and crime.”Mark Ruffalo of “Task” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Jennifer Aniston of “The Morning Show” on Apple TV+: When she landed her popular role as Rachel on NBC’s “Friends” in 1994, she had just finished the short-lived CBS sitcom “Muddling Through,” in which she played the daughter of a newly paroled convict (played by Stephanie Hodge).

Lacey Chabert of “Celebrations With Lacey Chabert” on Hallmark Channel and Hallmark+: Before gaining her initial fame as Claudia Salinger on the Fox series “Party of Five,” she appeared as herself in a 1991 episode of the PBS children’s series “Reading Rainbow.”

“There is a lot of improv on the show, and there’s always comedy and unexpected places. They’re [Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne] also so different as people and as comedians. I think that’s part of the success of the show. ...Seth is really verbal and can always say a funny line, and Rose can make you laugh with just the tiniest of eye movements. She’s very physical in her comedy.” - Luke Macfarlane of “Platonic” speaking with People.

“One of the most interesting conversations of our time is the internet’s impact on journalism. Not just the nature of publishing, but how information is received and valued by the public. In the series, Lee’s battle to get people to care — let alone even see his writing — is definitely an uphill one.”Ethan Hawke of “The Lowdown” in an email comment to Entertainment Weekly.
