Belle Starr was known to hang out with outlaws, including Bluford “Blue” Duck of Catoosa. Porum pays tribute to the Bandit Queen on Saturday.

Porum’s Belle Starr Day hosts events for all ages

‘Bandit Queen’ tribute features an array of fun events

Porum plans several fun ways to pay tribute to its “Bandit Queen” Saturday.

Belle Starr Day will feature a car show, Elvis tribute, street dance, BB gun shoot, even a cowboy costume contest.

According to the Oklahoma Historical Society website, Belle Starr’s home became a hideout for notorious outlaws. A historical marker alongside Oklahoma 71, about six miles southwest of Porum, shows where Starr lived until her death in 1899. A winding footpath leads to her grave.

Sissy Swafford, Belle Starr Association treasurer, said celebrating the outlaw is a town tradition.

“Belle Starr Days is one of those things that has been alive in Porum for a long time,” she said. “It’s our festival of the year.”

Swafford said at least 30 vendors are

Concessions include wood-fired pizza and pretzels, she said.

dren’s Research Hospital, she said.

“We’ll have a DJ there all day to keep people informed of events and times,” Swafford said. “We’re setting up an arcade game area for the kids — ring toss, things like that. We have another area for cake walks and turtle races.”

Youngsters also can compete in an outlaw look-a-like contest.

Karen Kinsey said prizes will be awarded to the top boy and girl in four categories: Baby Outlaw, under age 1; ages 1 through 4; ages 5 through 8; ages 9 through 12.

Entry forms are available until 11 a.m. Saturday at the pavilion. Judging begins at high noon.

Outlaw Classic Car Club will sponsor a car show Saturday. Club President Clayton Corbell said prizes will be awarded to the top 10, people’s choice

and best in show.

Corbell said people can register their car entries from 8 a.m. to noon.

“We hope to have 100 cars,” Corbell said.

Classic cars include a 1953 Ford. Stephen Wright will show his 1969 Chevrolet Blazer.

Porum’s Masonic Lodge will sponsor a BB gun shoot. Shane Robinson said the shooting contest has two age groups, 7 to 10 and 11 to 14. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Police Chief Jimmy Catron will give gun safety lessons around 10, and the contest will follow, Robinson said. Participants will get hot dogs.

Harold E. Shinn will present his Elvis Tribute at 7 p.m. A street dance will follow.

Comics set to appear Saturday include Tulsa’s Matthew Spruill, who has appeared at the Comedy Parlor and Tulsa Performing Arts Center, and Julie Drake of Oklahoma City, who focuses on current events and her life issues.

Comic-poet David Motte, (Mr.

“We’re trying to show we can be unified as a people through laughter,” Motte said. “Laughter has no color lines or no gender lines or anything like that.”

Motte said the tour is a way for different Oklahoma comedians to show their talent.

Harris said the tour includes Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Springfield, Missouri. But, it also will visit

smaller towns, such as Muskogee, Lawton and Bartlesville.

“A lot of small towns don’t get good comedy, number one, or even a comedy show without going to the bigger cities,” he said.

Harris, a Bristow native, said his humor comes from “life itself.”

“We all go through stuff, but you’ve got to turn that negative into a positive,” Harris said. “I try to bring it out in laughter. I try to twist it and make it funny, see the positive side of it instead of the negative side.”

Harris said Save Our Youth seeks to speak up for youth who are abused physically, sexually or verbally.

“What we do is advocate for children and give them justice,” he said. “We go to court with families. We help them get legal counsel. If we can’t get justice from the district attorney, we try to hire lawyers for them.”

Medicine Stone celebrates Red Dirt music

Music festival expands in it’s fifth year adding fourth stage for fans

It is rare and remarkable for any event to see a 283 percent growth rate in just five years, but since Medicine Stone began in 2013, it has done just that.

Diamondhead Resort on scenic State Highway 10 will host the fifth annual music festival, Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 21-23, with headliners and founders Turnpike Troubadours and Jason Boland, and more than 35 other bands.

Several new aspects are making the event even better. A fourth stage has been added to allow for more of the music that has Red Dirt fans flocking to the Illinois River.

“We had to add another stage to accommodate the growing demand for Red Dirt artist performances,” said Medicine Stone 2017 team member Brandy Reed. Also new are acoustic guitars signed by all musicians at the event for the VIP packages.

“We will try to make a few available for purchase at the merchandise booth Saturday evening,” said Reed, who also explained why Medicine Stone is growing so rapidly.

Medicine Stone is the only festival of its kind celebrating Red Dirt music in Oklahoma, and it has the perfect location that’s easily accessible for all the fans in the surrounding states, she said.

“The combination of the music and outdoor activities in such a

@MUSIC FESTIVAL

Red Dirt

Continued from Page 8

team express the enthusiasm of the performers.

Gary Braun of Micky and the Motorcars said it’s not hard to believe that Medicine Stone has grown so big, so quickly.

“When you combine great music with a great venue, and top notch production, it’s a win-win for both the artists and the fans,” Braun said.

Red Shahan agrees.

“It’s inspiring to be a part of something that’s growing so rapidly and to see the flood of music lovers as they pour in by the camper-load,” he said.

Another new opportunity for one lucky fan is to win the Deputy Chief of Medicine Stone 2017 contest and serve as a direct liaison between festival goers and the production team. The Deputy Chief will kick off the event by introducing the first band on opening night from the main stage. He or she will receive two three-day VIP access passes to the event and meet-and-greets with all artists, a 2017 Medicine Stone T-shirt and koozie.

It’s not just the fans who love Medicine Stone; the musicians look forward to the festival as well.

“It’s tribal, but it’s liable to make you wobble and bobble. It’ll put your head right and make your heart light as a feather, whether fair or inclement weather. I just love the way they love to get together and get down home at the Medicine Stone,” said Kevin Russell of Shinyribs.

Along with Shinyribs, the Turnpike Troubadours and Jason Boland and The Stragglers, the lineup includes The Randy Rogers Band, Byron Berline Band, Randy Crouch & Flying Horse, Jacob Tovar, Red Dirt Rangers, Mike & The Moonpies, Jonny Burke, Thomas Trapp, Shane Smith and the Saints, Lucero, Raised Right Men, Mike McClure, Charley Crockett, The Washitas, Bruce Robison, Sunny Sweeney, Monica Taylor, Charlie Stout, Kait-

lin Butts, Dalton Domino, J.D. McPherson, Dave Kay, Aaron Einhouse, Jamie Wilson, Flatland Cavalry, Bri Bagwell, Suzanne Santo, John D. Hale and Dirty River Boys.

Cody Canada and the Departed are also performing.

“It’s one of three music festivals I look forward to every year,” said Canada. “There is not a bad act in the bunch. I spent a lot of time on that river growing up. Feels good to be an Okie!”

For BJ Barham of American Aquarium, it’s always an honor to get the invite, and he is excited to be back again this year.

“It’s been pretty incredible to watch it grow from just an idea back in 2013 into one of the premiere destinations of the festival season,” said Barham. “Hats off to Turnpike and Boland for bringing in the best talent in the country, year after year, and cultivating such an amazing fanbase that is willing to support it.”

Ticket packages might seem a bit pricey, but considering how many performances a ticket holder can experience every day while camping or staying at a cabin on site it’s really a bargain. For $150, the Roughin’ It package includes one three-day access pass and the option to tent camp all three nights. Full details of all ticket packages is available on the Medicine Stone website.

The Medicine Stone VIP Motel Livin’ package is $1,250 and includes four three-day access passes; a three-night stay in a hotel; free shuttle service to and from the event to the hotel; one custom-wrapped Medicine Stone acoustic guitar, autographed by all of this year’s artists; and four band merchandise swag bags.

A Dark and Dirty Mile Reserved Camping package is $950 and includes four three-day access passes and three nights of camping with prime location, right alongside the concert gates.

The Diamondhead Resort is at 12081 Oklahoma 10 in Tahlequah. For information and updates, visit www.facebook.com/medicinestoneok and www.instagram. com/medicinestoneok. For tickets, go to www.medicinestoneok.com.

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick bring ‘The Vietnam War’ to life

A t a time of extreme political divisiveness, a new documentary series from Emmy-winning filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick recalls a time when an unpopular war had the country fighting both at home and abroad.

The 10-part, 18-hour “The Vietnam War,” which airs on PBS Sundays through Thursdays for the next two weeks beginning Sept. 17 (check local listings), tells the epic story of a war that had killed 58,000 Americans in the 1960s and ‘70s, sparked angry protests across the country and saw the U.S. government justifying it as means of preventing communism’s spread throughout Southeast Asia – “the domino theory,” as it was called.

A film 10 years in the making, “The Vietnam War” features the testimony of nearly 80 witnesses, including those who fought on the American and Vietnamese sides, as well as those who opposed it. It also uses rare and remastered archival footage, photos, home movies, TV broadcasts and audio recordings from the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations to tell the story.

“You know, we try super hard not to sort of put our thumb on the scale or to promote an agenda, political or otherwise,” Burns explained to a recent gathering of journalists in Beverly Hills, Calif. “It’s enough to spend 10 years just trying to wrestle this story to the ground, and we felt that it was hugely

important because the story is rarely told from more than one perspective.

“Americans like to talk about this seminal event,” he continues, “and we believe that it’s the most important event in United States history since the Second World War. We tend to talk only about ourselves, and the triangulation that we thought we could achieve by having these other voices and other perspectives would lend credence to the idea that there isn’t a single truth in the war; that, in fact, there’s many truths that can coexist, and that might help to sort of take the fuel rods out of the division and polarization that was born in Vietnam that continues to this moment.”

What really makes the documentary come alive

“The Vietnam War” premieres Sunday on PBS.

are the testimonies from veterans who fought on both sides in Vietnam, many of whom had to revisit painful, often traumatic memories to tell their stories. But once they did, Novick says it seemed to serve as a cathartic experience.

“Over and over again, we’ve seen that and there’s something – it just takes the sting out of it a little bit if you can talk about it,” Novick says. “It doesn’t make it go away – nothing can do that – but it was also a sense of the people who did share their stories with us want their children and grandchildren, and if they’re Vietnamese they want Americans to know. And if they’re American, they want the country to know what it was like for them so there’s sort of an imperative to do it even if it’s hard.”

GEORGIA KING

For Georgia King, idealistic English teacher Amanda Snodgrass on HBO’s “Vice Principals,” writing short films, as she’s done in recent years, opened up frontiers to her that were previously inaccessible to her as an actor.

“I can actually live the life of a middle-aged man having a nervous breakdown or a 70-yearold French woman or whatever it is,” the vivacious 30-year-old English actress says with a laugh. “I can be people that I physically cannot be but I can emotionally and mentally write those people and explore those worlds, which is really cool. So yeah, it’s very world-opening, I think is the appropriate term.”

As the second and final season of the dark HBO comedy gets underway Sunday, Sept. 17, Neal Gamby (series star and co-creator Danny McBride) has recovered from wounds suffered when he was shot in the Season 1 finale and returns to find many changes at North Jackson High. That extends to his relationship with on-and-off girlfriend Amanda, who has a new potential suitor in an educator played by Fisher Stevens (“The Blacklist”).

There isn’t much King can disclose about Season 2 lest she give away spoilers, but she does say she relished working with Stevens and exploring the Gamby/Snodgrass romance and she loved filming both seasons at once last year in Charleston, S.C.

“It was such a cool, unusual experience to be able to film two seasons of a TV show almost like an epic movie, which is sort of what I think ‘Vice Principals’ is,” she says. “It’s just a huge, massive film, and we had maybe a week off between both seasons. So from an acting point of view, it was an absolute luxury to be able to stay in the worlds that we were in and with the characters that we were playing. And it became more vivid and more real and it was awesome. Such a cool way of approaching a TV show.”

The wine is the thing for Candace Cameron and Valeri Bure

Candace Cameron Bure, DJ Tanner-Fuller on Netflix’s “Fuller House” (which returns for its third season Friday, Sept. 22), is a woman of many talents: actress, talk-show host, producer, author, “Dancing With the Stars” competitor.

But what you might not know is that she’s also very into wine and with her husband, former NHL star Valeri Bure, co-owns the Napa Valley-based Bure Family Wines.

“We’ve always loved food and wine, especially Val; we’re definitely foodies,” Cameron Bure explains. “So Val knew that when his hockey career would eventually wind down, he wanted something else to do. So he got involved in winemaking. We had taken some trips to Napa and then he just started really learning the craft probably five years before he retired, and started setting up things so that he could go into that business once he did retire.”

“We farm everything, tend everything,” she continues. “And we’re a very small boutique winery. Our production is very small but very high end.”

Indeed, a look at the company’s website, www. burefamilywines.com, reveals a mix of cabernet sauvignons (one of which is an estate wine), a chardonnay and a sauvignon blanc, with small releases and no prices listed, though other online retailers price them at upward of $100 a bottle.

Cameron Bure says her husband learned the business literally from the ground up, from growing and harvesting the grapes, to mixing the wine and marketing and selling it. He’s especially interested in the mixing and in that he takes a very active role.

‘The Good Place’ Season 2: Both good and bad for Kristen Bell

Net Picks

“Jerry Before Seinfeld,” www.netflix.com/title/80163156

Jerry Seinfeld returns to the New York comedy club that launched his career, The Comic Strip, for an intimate set in this special that drops Friday. The performance is interspersed with never-before-seen material — including legal pads with every joke he’s written since 1975, childhood videos and more — as Seinfeld performs the jokes that put him on the comedy map.

Last season, ‘The Good Place“ turned out to be the Bad Place, but Kristen Bell still feels it’s the best place for her to be.

The “Veronica Mars” and “House of Lies” alum says she’s “in love with” Season 2 of her current NBC comedy series about the afterlife, which has an hourlong start following the “America’s Got Talent” season finale Wednesday, Sept. 20. Off the air since January, the show – normally to be seen on Thursdays again, beginning Sept. 28 – picks up after the climactic twist that saw Bell’s character Eleanor discover the supposedly benevolent Michael (Ted Danson) had tricked her and others into believing they were in a heavenly place, when it actually was the opposite.

Filming on “The Good Place’s” sophomore season was completed in July. “We have to start shooting around March,” the spirited Bell explains, “In order to play in all of the special effects, of which we have even more this year. They need two months to do that, and they’ve really explored how to show this world.”

And that world is now turned around. Bell allows that under creator and executive producer Michael Schur (“Parks and Recreation”), the show’s first season

As Season 4 of the Emmywinning comedy gets going on Friday, the Pfeffermans embark on a spiritual and political journey as they delve deep into their family’s history. Chief among them is Maura (Jeffrey Tambor), who makes a startling discovery after heading to Israel for a conference. amounted to “the challenge of how well we could keep a secret. It was a slower-paced season, so that we could reach the end goal of the reveal, but the second season has its foot on the gas from the first moment. Season 1 was the bad weather setting in, and Season 2 is the hurricane.”

Bell knew about the big plot twist from the beginning, but keeping it under wraps meant withholding it even from her husband, actor-writer-director Dax Shepard (“Parenthood,” “CHiPs”). “He’d say, ‘I think Ted is a little underutilized, just kind of one-note,”’ Bell recalls.

“I didn’t spoil it for him, but I knew we were doing that for a very specific reason. There wasn’t a shot in Season 1 where (Danson) was ever alone, because if he was, you’d see that he was Michael from the Bad Place. In Season 2, you get a lot more of Ted ... the right amount of Ted.”

As a parent of two young daughters with Shepard, Bell is grateful for the manageable shooting schedule of “The Good Place.” She also has the movie sequel “A Bad Moms Christmas” opening in November, and she already has started her voice work on Disney’s “Frozen 2” for a late 2019 release, but she maintains she’s still had substantial time at home.

This cinema verité-style documentary from Chris Moukarbel follows the pop star and provocateur as she embarks on a pivotal point in her career: the release of her 2016 album “Joanne” and her preparations for her halftime show this past February at Super Bowl LI. Behind-thescenes footage captures Lady Gaga as she spends time with family and friends, plays with her dogs and deals with her personal struggles.

Larson eyes return to NASCAR postseason

NASCAR’s Monster Energy Cup Series postseason begins Sunday, Sept. 17 at Chicagoland Speedway with the running of the Tales of the Turtles 400 where Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson should be among the drivers with a chance to win the championship. As of this writing, Larson has three wins on the Cup trail this season, including two at Michigan, and is poised to be a challenger during these ten final races.

Larson’s ascension through stock car racing has been comparable to a baseball player advancing through the minor leagues, eventually getting to the big leagues. He began racing in NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series in 2012, and a year later joined what is now the Xfiniity Series (then Nationwide). He made history when he became the first Asian-American (his mother is Japanese) driver to win a Rookie of the Year title in any circuit when he earned that title in the Nationwide series.

In 2014 he replaced Juan Pablo Montoya in the CGR’s 42 car in what is now the Monster Energy Series and earned his first Cup win at Michigan in 2016; thus winning each of the past three races there. He also won the Auto Club 400 in California in March and finished 12th at the Daytona 500 where he had the lead late in the race before running out of gas.

Larson made the NASCAR playoffs last season but was eliminated after the first round. At Chicagoland, and in the weeks ahead, keep an eye on the No. 42 Chevy.

Online and off the beaten path: streaming services you don’t know about

Those who still haven’t caught streaming fever are likely aware of the Netflixes, Amazons and Hulus of the world. But if it is content from off the beaten path or other countries you seek, there are a host of services that may scratch your itch.

Chief among them is Acorn (Acorn.tv), “the Netflix for the Anglophile,” which offers up a generous slate of British and international television including the Canadian crime drama “19-2,” which stars Jared Keeso and Adrian Holmes as Montreal police partners, now in its fourth and final season; “Newton’s Law,” an Australian legal drama starring Claudia Karvan as a suburban woman who returns to a brilliant law career; the Scandinavian drama “Black Widows,” about three girlfriends who conspire to kill their husbands; and “The Governor,” where Janet McTeer stars as the first woman in charge of a maximum security prison torn by a recent riot.

If edgy, independent content is your thing, then Sundance Now (www.sundancenow.com) is as good as it gets. Like its basic cable brethren, this recently launched online platform has a library of films, series and documentaries you likely won’t see elsewhere, things such as the film short “Woman in Deep,” in which Allison Pill (“Midnight in Paris”) stars as a woman who calls a suicide prevention line and is put on hold; the series “The Writers’ Room,” where Oscar-winning screenwriter Jim Rash (“The Descendants”) talks shop with top show creators and stars; and the documentary “David Bowie: Under Review 1976-1979,” which features live and studio performances by Bowie, rare interviews and discussion with a panel of experts.

FilmStruck (www.filmstruck.com), which bills itself as the “exclusive streaming home of the world’s most important films,” offers movie buffs a comprehensive library of arthouse, indie, foreign and cult favorites, plus bonus content, filmmaker interviews and rare footage. Among its eclectic offerings: the 1939 classic “Wuthering Heights” starring Laurence Olivier; the 1964 romantic comedy “Good Neighbor Sam” with Jack Lemmon and Romy Schneider; the 1973 crime drama “The Friends of Eddie Coyle” starring Robert Mitchum”; and “Something Wild,” the 1986 romance/drama/thriller starring Jeff Daniels, Melanie Griffith and Ray Liotta.

Complex Networks’ Rated Red (www.ratedred.com), “the first digital video network for Heartland millennials,” offers original content for the younger crowd, ranging from scripted series such as “Boonies,” about five high school seniors haunted by a dead classmate’s cryptic video, to the unscripted “Breaking Bass,” about two young anglers who take bass fishing to the next level.

Jared Keeso Answers:
1) “Tool Time”
2) The Tool Man
3) “More power!”
4) Pamela Anderson. After Anderson left, Debbe Dunning played new assistant Heidi.
5) Wilson
6) Brad, Randy and Mark. In real life, however, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who played Randy, was a month older than Zachery Ty Bryan, who played Brad.
7) Jimmy Carter
8) Jonathan Taylor Thomas
9) The Beach Boys
10) Plaid flannel
