playing Ryan. Interestingly, Affleck has said he was working with initial “Ryan” actor Baldwin on “Pearl Harbor” on the day he got the offer, and both Baldwin and Ford gave him their blessing on succeeding them.

The outcome was quite satisfactory, with “The Sum of All Fears” (which is now something of a staple on cable networks) topping $190 million in international profits. Though that would be Affleck’s one turn as Ryan, at least up to now, that casting can be seen as helping to make it plausible for Chris Pine to take up the part in 2014’s “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” (which finally brought Costner into the franchise as a co-star) and then for Krasinski to inherit the role in the Prime Video series when it began in 2018.

That service clearly was happy with what it was getting early on, since “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” was renewed for a second season several months before the first one premiered. Now, the show begins its victory lap, but Ryan’s history with filmmakers (and the ongoing popularity of the Clancy books) might suggest that he isn’t done with his screen adventures for good.

Roger Moore knew how to ‘Live’ as James Bond c lassic corner

ean Connery’s first successor as James Bond was one-time “Agent 007” George Lay, but the first replacement to stick was the ever-charismatic Roger Moore who started his run as the secret agent in “Live and Let Die,” which MGM+ shows Sunday, 25. The 1973 adventure directed by Bond veteran Guy Hamilton (“Goldfinger”) typically takes the Ian Fleming-created hero on a globe-hopping mission, but he spends a bit of time in America, notably in New York – where his main lead on the deaths several other agents is a United Nations diplomat (Yaphet Kotto).

The latter relies on a medium named Solitaire for guidance, and that role marked a major career move for Jane Seymour, quite convincing as a romantic interest for Moore despite the considerable age difference between them. Also notable in the cast is David edison as Bond’s CIA pal Felix Leiter (he would reprise the part later opposite TimoDalton’s Bond in “Licence to Kill”). The title tune is by Paul McCartney and Wings.

“Scarface” (Peacock, streaming): As overboard as he goes with his performance as mobster Tony Montana, it’s entirely fitting for Al Pacino within the context of director Brian De Palma’s 1983 melodrama, also known for its extreme violence. This surely is one of Pacino’s most iconic roles, and you can see traces of it in some of his later projects (the excellent “Heat” being one of them). He teamed here for the first time with Michelle Pfeiffer, with whom he later reunited in the vastly different “Frankie & Johnny”; Steven Bauer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Robert Loggia also star

“Magnum, P.I.” (GetTV, Monday, June 26): A couple of popular detective shows merged in the episode “Ki’i’s Don’t Lie,” with Jameson Parker and Gerald McRaney visiting Hawaii in their “Simon & Simon” roles as they collide with Magnum (Tom Selleck) on a case. Morgan Fairchild also guest stars.

“Cheers” (Catchy Comedy, Monday, June 26): For those who know this sitcom’s history, the Season 2 episode “Old Flames” offers an interesting casting twist. The main guest star is Fred Dryer (“Hunter”), who tested to play this show’s Sam before Ted Danson got the part.

Hats off: chefs face a labyrinth of challenges in new Hulu show

The out-of-the-box, out-of-the-or competition, “Secret Chef,” pits in a blind taste-test-off when June 29, on Hulu.

The show, as complex as it isolates its competitors in a secret cluded, underground kitchens, ongoing conveyor belt. Each chef their own, not knowing who With no guidance from any hosts, chefs, each contender has only structions: a mischievous, animated appears on screen to task the complex cooking challenges. They ely solely on themselves as they chop, blend and sauté towards the finish line, when their dishes disappear, whisked away on a conveyor belt.

But it doesn’t stop there. In another subversion of traditional cooking competitions, this show features no judges – at least, not exactly At the end of the competition, the chefs will partake in a series of blind taste tests, experiencing each other’s creations firsthand as the conveyor belt moves along – all without knowing the competitor behind the dish. They must rate the presented plates based on food alone, with no knowledge of whether it was prepared by an

all-star chef or a hobbyist cook. Only once a winner has been chosen will identities be revealed and the labyrinth unlocked.
