Discover y Channel gets in the swim of things with Shark Week 2019

Shark Week kicks of f eight days of programming Sunday on Discover y Channel.

Fans of the oceans’ apex predator will find plenty to sink their teeth into when Shark Week surfaces for its 31st programming frenzy this week on Discovery Channel.

Swimming into view Sunday, July 28, the annual eight-day block devoted to all things shark offers up a plethora of knowledge on everything from great white hunting behaviors (“Great White Kill Zone: Guadalupe,” Thursday, Aug. 1), the accounts of shark-attack victims (“I Was Prey,” Friday, Aug. 2) and how to survive in shark-infested waters (“Laws of Jaws: Dangerous Waters,” Tuesday, July 30) to the latest in shark-detecting technology (“Sharks of the Badlands,” Monday, July 29), an attempt to create the perfect shark suit (“Andrew Mayne: Ghost Diver,” Friday) and how a giant prehistoric shark went extinct (“Expedition Unknown: Megalodon,” Sunday).

There is even a celebrity shark swim with actor/ comedian Rob Riggle (“Shark Trip: Eat Prey Chum,” Sunday).

In “Expedition Unknown: Megalodon,” host Josh Gates speaks to paleontologists and marine biologists and even goes diving in shark-infested waters to investigate the decline and eventual disappearance of “The Meg,” a powerful predator that reached lengths up to 59 feet, millions of years ago

“The old thinking up until a few years ago,” Gates explains, “is that the Meg went away because of a climate change, it went away because of the onset of an Ice Age, it went away because there was a stellar event where the Earth was bathed in a type of radiation that possibly changed some of the ecosystems on the planet. And that’s always been the story about the Meg and that story is changing and

that’s what we wanted to investigate with this show, is it may be that the Meg went extinct a million years earlier than previously thought at a time when there was no real big climactic change. And if that’s the case, it means that it probably died out because it was outcompeted by other animals.”

In another piece of noteworthy programming, Tuesday’s “Laws of Jaws: Dangerous Waters” places hosts Paul de Gelder, Jamin Martinelli, Mike Dornellas and Nick LeBeouf in harm’s way to re-enact five recent shark attacks to find out how things could have ended differently and what people can do to prevent or fend off an attack.

In one experiment, Martinelli climbs on a paddleboard in the Bahamas to test how sharks react to her presence and various actions, such as falling off the board.

Her advice to someone confronted by a shark?

“Try to make eye contact,” she says. “... That’s the most important thing, is for them to know that you are alert and you’re watching them. Also, if you do have a paddle, that’s great because you can actually keep your distance from them, so they may circle just to kind of check you out but you can keep a barrier.

“And ... just remain calm,” she continues. “In any amped up situation, if you kind of get hysterical or (start) freaking out, then you just forget all of this. So if you’re super-calm, then you’re more aware to be totally in the situation, saying, ‘OK, I see the shark, all he’s doing is checking me out. I can (handle) this. I’m watching him, he’s watching me.’ And then from there, either get back on the board or the boat but just do everything super-slow while watching him the entire time.”

Tastemade’s ‘Struggle Meals’ shows how to eat well for less

With the cost of groceries climbing ever higher, a show like “Struggle Meals” is most welcome.

Currently streaming on the foodie/travel digital platform Tastemade, the series walks viewers through the steps in making creative, delicious meals that don’t break the bank, offering up tips on how to reduce their food bills dramatically by eliminating waste and sharing kitchen hacks and tasty recipes. The show’s theme, “Life can be a struggle but a good meal doesn’t have to be” says it all.

Leading the charge is the series’ host, New Yorkbased chef Frankie Celenza, who is passionate about not wasting food.

“The biggest thing,” explains Celenza, who won a New York Emmy Award for his YouTube series “Frankie Cooks,” “is really making sure that everybody cooks with everything that they buy because the U.N. has this stat that 40 percent of food in America is thrown out. That’s the U.N. So in theory, if one cooks or consumes everything they buy at the supermarket, they’re saving 40 percent of their money, right? So right there, you can almost double the efficiency of what you’re spending.”

A great example of that, he says, is the corn chowder he made in one recent episode.

“We’ve got a bucket where every vegetable end, we’re throwing it in there and making stocks from it,” he says. “We just did a corn chowder ... where the broth was literally corn husk and cob leftovers, like made a corn broth. I mean, that’s just saving money That’s cheaper than using a bouillon cube. It’s cheaper than using three boxes of vegetable stock. It’s a byproduct of the main ingredient. It’s good.”

of this, he says, people didn’t need to cook and so they never learned. He intends to give that power back to them by giving them knowledge.

“Food cost is high in America,” he says, “and this is the country that has made it easier than any other in the world for you not to cook – because you’re too busy, you can’t cook. ‘We’ll do it for you, have this frozen food. Go through this drive-thru.’ They’ve made it really easy and stolen – I personally think since the 1970s on, we kind of like lost a generation of home cooks and I think people want it back.”

Sharks of the Badlands

White sharks continue to infiltrate the waters of Cape Cod, which draws heavy tourist traffic. In fact, during the most recent year on record, a record number of these sharks — 150 — were spotted in the region, culminating in the first shark attack fatality in 80 years. Greg Skomal, underwater filmmaker Andy Casagrande and shark expert Kina Scollay assemble in New Zealand to do some first-hand testing of new surveillance technology to track shark activity, equipment that might turn things around in Cape Cod.

Season 10 of this Emmy-winning and very adult animated comedy series wraps things up tonight in a finale called “Archer: 1999 — Robert De Niro,” an episode that very well could have little or nothing to do with that Oscarwinning actor. This new fantasy, the third and final installment in the “Descendants” movie trilogy, finds Maleficent’s daughter Mal (Dove Cameron) and three other offspring (Sofia Carson, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart) of classic Disney villains inadvertently causing a magical barrier breach while visiting the Isle of the Lost to recruit new students for their school. Soon, a dark force threatens their kingdom. Cheyenne Jackson co-stars. Tragically, Boyce, a popular Disney Channel star, died at age 20 of complications from a medical condition after filming was completed.

Made with Le Guin’s participation over a decade and premiering during the 50th anniversary year of “The Left Hand of Darkness,” the author’s landmark exploration of gender fluidity, the film also includes interviews with several other writers influenced by Le Guin’s work: Margaret Atwood, Neil Gaiman and Michael Chabon.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrines its class of 2019. Topping the list of inductees is long-time Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed, along with Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez. Defensive backs Ty Law (New England Patriots) and Champ Bailey (Washington Redskins, Denver Broncos) are also being enshrined.
