The project is a designated community center and bathhouse that caters to the downtown community of dowton austin. The driving idea behind the design is image. It is the focus on individual perspective and experiencing a building through frames. This dedication to creating visual continuity invites a certain curiousity that welcomes and moves a person through the physical space. Whether it is seeing a high dive as you take the elevator or looking up to see sillhoutes occupying an intimate balcony, an image is always captured and proccessed by the individual.

Sol & Luna Observatory Familiar Conditions and Polar Extremes

Sol & Luna observatory explores the role of sunlight and terrain in generating two site specific idiosyncratic proposals for a Solar Observatory Visitor Center. This exploration builds upon the investigative studies by Peter Eisenman in Palladio Virtuel to exploit Palladio’s nuanced design decisions towards celestial and terrestrial alignments. Two differing latitudes, one within familiar temperate region of 33 degrees latitude (Lubbock, TX) , the other approximates the poles at 78 degrees latitude (Svalbard, Norway), offer contrasting sites from which core spatial arrangements become situated Sol, the observatory gracefully positioned in the expansive Llano Estecado, draws inspiration from the robust spirit of Villa Chieracati. Channeling the essence of a commanding central space, the design manifests as a towering solar hall that reaches skyward, capturing the sweeping drama of Llano Estacado’s solar trajectory.

In contrast, Luna, the observatory nestled in the untamed landscapes of Svalbard, Norway, opts for more nuanced approach by fracturing and dividing the central space. Echoing the rugged ridgelines of the surrounding mountains, Luna’s sharp edges and soft curves imbue the structure with a compelling sense of belonging amidst the peaks. Situated in a location that experiences months of perpetual darkness, the observatory conciously employs artificial lighting reminiscent of the Northern lights, transforming it into a luminous monument that commemorates the extremes of its Arctic context.

Lubbock Art Studio Building Intelligence

Building Intelligence frames architecture as a medium for engaging and responding to multiple scales of inhabitation. The fragment and the whole are to be understood as equal parts in the architectural proposal and opportunities for design lie within the coordination of systems that define spaces for occupation.

Two precedents: Yokohama Port Terminal and Vault House, are methodically analyzed and taken apart. Formal, Tectonic, and Spatial knowledge are drawn from the precedents. The remnants of the studies then manifest themselves as a series of hybrid spaces. These spaces are the digestion of scale, tectonics, and spatial relations.

The hybrids are ultimately used as building blocks to generate a space that responds to the urban scale. Lubbock Art Studia is realized through the compromise between the playful nature of the hybrids and the functional requirements of a program.

Sonoran Revival Cooling Arizona Jose Gutierrez + Stephen Soto Sonoran Revival is a design excercise into low-income architecture becoming celebration of a community rather than the face of a dreary reality. Often when architecture tries to intervine it becomes lost in its own narrative and leaves behind those who are meant to occupy it. Sonoran Revival seeks to offer a solution on the urban, social, and environmental scale. It is a direct response to the climate, the city, and ultimately the individual.

Located on Van Buren St and N. 11th St. This project is built in a diverse yet vulnerable neighborhood. Research shows that less than 9% of this area has proper canopy cover. This lack of “Tree Equity” is one of the reasons why inner city phoenix is experiencing surface temperatures up to 3 degrees higher than its surrounding suburbs.

The project seeks to solve this by providing a sanctuary to the nearby community. Utilizing rammed earth, heavy timber, and ample vegetation, Sonoran revival will not only restore, but help this neighborhood thrive.
