I cannot thank Neel and the team at Willows Dental enough! From the moment you are greeted to the moment you leave you feel like family. Being a very nervous and anxious patient, especially when it comes to teeth - Neel was quick enough to explain everything in detail & put me at ease. I’ve never met a dentist who is so passionate & caring about their patients’ long-term oral health. Having a dentist who can relate and doesn’t judge is a massive win! After only two visits, I can honestly say I will never go anywhere else. If you have a million questions, Neel is happy to answer them with complete honesty and reassurance as to what treatment can be done. No question or treatment is too big or small! The reception staff are very warm and welcoming... a real credit to the team. The positive energy is certainly cascaded through the building. Quite simply, this practice is amazing. Friendly, professional and nothing is too much trouble. The receptionists are welcoming and smile which is so important in a front of house position, and the hygienists are the most friendly and professional ones I have ever met. Neel and Vicki are not just fantastic dentists, but they also demonstrate an amazing compassion for those who are less fortunate in life. It is always a pleasurable experience visiting the practice, and I would recommend it to anyone seeking out a dental practice. Well done everyone, you are a credit to the profession. And to Neel and Vicki, congratulations on running such an amazing practice. Absolutely amazing! So friendly and helpful, nothing is ever too much. The hygienist is extremely professional and really cares about how you’re feeling. A credit to the practice! Can you believe, I actually enjoy going to the dentist! Thank you Willows! Excellent Dentists, they put you at ease and explain everything. Very friendly staff, and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Willows dental have been absolutely amazing, I could not recommend the service and the results high enough. I was under the amazing care of Vicky whilst there and the standard as well as personalised treatment was second to none. My teeth have never felt better nor has my confidence. I cannot thank her enough for this, I will never look back in terms of getting dental treatment anywhere else, they have set the bar high! Thank you. By far the best dental experience I’ve had. Friendly, informative and very professional at every appointment. Thank you, Rushaine. I feel privileged to be a patient at Willows. Amazing staff! friendly and helpful. A calm environment, I was scared to go to the dentist, the staff at the Willows have turned this around. Quite simply if Carlsberg did dentists! My daughter absolutely loves going to the dentist! My mum and I are both terrified of the dentist, but are perfectly happy here! If you are nervous go to Willows - they are the best! Never enjoyed dental visits, anxious and previous bad experiences until I started coming here. What a great team!! Very professional, always take time to explain properly so you know the options or what’s going to happen. Very gentle treatment, never rushed. I can’t rate Willows dental and implant centre enough. I needed a new dentist after my dentist left the practice. After having my initial consultation with Vicki, I was told I needed various work doing. Vicki was lovely and professional and so gentle. Despite feeling quite nervous with the procedures that needed doing... I was given the best care and attention and there was no need for me to be nervous at all. My faith in dentists have been restored thank you Vicki. If you need a dentist don’t hesitate to contact this practice... I guarantee you will get the best treatment.

Willows Dental & Implant Centre

Where there's a Willows, there's a way How we are keeping you safe post COVID Well it has been a weird 10 weeks hasn’t it and let’s be honest it’s still not really over, I don’t think there’s been anyone who hasn’t been affected in some way by all this craziness. However, so far at least it seems that things are getting better which is great news.

So what has changed in dentistry and what is likely to change? Well hopefully, if you are looked after at a practice like ours, you are used to having a nice friendly smile , a cup of something warm in a cosy waiting room and maybe some magazines to flick through, a dentist that you like and as far as dentists can be, not too bad an experience. Well some things have changed, and some things haven’t. The smiles are still there as is the friendly greeting. Now if you come to us by car, one of our caring team will come to your car and take your temperature (something we never had to do before), we do this using quite a cool gadget that looks like a small speed camera gun, which rather than giving you an unpleasant ticket, tells us your body temperature. Assuming it is not too raised above 37 degrees (normal body temperature) we’ll give you a buzzer like you sometimes get in restaurants while you are waiting for your table.

If you like we have a pretty big reception, so as long as you promise not to lick, sneeze or cough on anyone, you are welcome to come in. One of our team will grab you a drink while you liberally apply hand sanitiser to your hands. Our sanitiser contains Aloe Vera and smells quite nice, so we are told, you won’t be accused of smelling like an alcoholic after you’ve left us! You will notice the team are wearing visors and masks, these are to stop you kissing us (I am kidding). These are to protect you from any aerosols that might be produced and vice versa. As you would expect, every single gadget we use in our clinics are sterilised in our state of the art decontamination centres in machines called autoclaves that destroy and kill anything and everything by heating all of our instruments to 134 degrees centigrade at a pressure of 15psi (even hotter than the inside of a Breville cheese toasted sandwich). Now in dentistry some of our tools spray water and air. This isn’t ideal as you can imagine, so all of our surgeries have now been equipped with industrial air exchangers, obviously with us being us, ours pull out all the air in even our biggest surgeries twice a minute, so we aim to get all of the air out of a room at least 20 times in between patients, which renders the room cleaner than most operating rooms. Add in to that we are using technology from other industries such as fogging machines that spray out HOCL (a virus killing spray) and you have an environment cleaner than… well something that’s incredibly clean. You may also see the dentists and their nurses wearing some quite strange looking masks while we are doing our jobs, this is to keep you safe from us and us from you. It also helps if either of us have had garlic the night before. Well if this all sounds a little overkill, don’t worry, unlike some practices we’re not charging PPE surcharges, as the Covid alert level starts to drop we may be able to relax too , but in the meantime, we want you to know that your safety is our priority and certainly not your expense. We’re just here to give you great quality dental treatment, in a safe environment, with no pressure , no judgement, and great service. It’s just what we do.

Beth and Chloe

Yours sincerely, Neel Barchha.

From the EDITOR

We’re back! After what feels like an interminable few months in lockdown some semblance of normality has returned in recent weeks. Pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and lots of other businesses are now opening up, as well as a lot of the tourist industry – both home and abroad. Summer holidays look likely to be saved. There is now – at last – much on the horizon to enjoy after so much recent turmoil.

So much has been lost but much has been gained also, and here at Wolverhampton West we’re determined to concentrate on the positives. We have – like so many of us nationwide – been delighted to celebrate the inspirational people who have during this pandemic made us all so proud – people like Captain Sir Tom Moore who raised over £32 million for charity; the NHS staff and care workers who have given their all in helping combat the damage inflicted by coronavirus; local people like Nick Malenko and Royston Blythe, the men behind the National Hair Sunday Campaign; and anyone else who has shown kindness and consideration for others during these testing times. The coronavirus pandemic and resulting UK lockdown may have turned our world upside down, but we see this as an opportunity for positive change. Before lockdown, our lives were defined by speed: rushing around, living life at rocket pace was the norm. Keeping up with work responsibilities, social obligations and a never-ending stream of other ‘to-do’s’ left us exhausted and empty. This enforced period of calm has taught us the benefits of slowing down. We’ve all had to adapt to a new normal and re-evaluate what is important in our lives. I have discovered I can cook and have perfected several homemade dishes (involving no mixes or jars!). In fact, I’ve been successful to the point that I’ve toyed with the idea of applying to appear on MasterChef. The house and garden have never looked so splendid. And if you’re eager to keep yours up 06

to scratch, you’ll enjoy our many home and gardenbased features – including everything from garden lanterns to bespoke bricks from Manchester Bricks. Gisella and I have defined a new routine of exercising and walking in our local area, discovering the many wonderful routes we have on our doorstep. Out and about we’ve noticed a distinct and pleasant change among the people we’ve encountered, finding them to be especially personable and community-minded. It’s so refreshing to have time to chat, even if it’s while waiting to buy groceries. Of course, not everything has been quite so inspiring, because I’ve also mastered the art of lounging around for hours on end, buying huge amounts of gadgets and gizmos online, while watching endless repeats on TV. Blow-drying Gisella’s hair became very hard work too, as weeks ran into months – no wonder she can’t wait to return to Royston Blythe’s hair salon (by the way: anyone who has been lacking locks this lockdown, don’t feel left out, the Hair Regrowth Clinic can sort you out) and to check out Deborah Mitchell’s new Nettle Venom at Heaven. Maybe it’s because our world has shrunk so suddenly but I think we’ve all appreciated having such a vibrant local business community to rely upon to keep us going through this difficult period (on a personal note, Allan Bennett and Poxons Butchers kept me – just about – sane throughout it all!). Many local suppliers and businesses feature in the coming pages and we’re hugely grateful to them in particular – without them you simply wouldn’t be reading these words, so I urge you all to use their products and services as much as possible going forward. Weirdly despite the slowdown much has been happening. Ladies’ fashion retailer Aristocats is about to celebrate 40 years’ (Our May issue was to be Wolverhampton West’s 10th anniversary edition; ironically it fell exactly when we couldn’t celebrate it).

I can’t wait for all of this to pass. So I can return to “Social Distancing” on my own terms.

Halfpenny Green Vineyards has hit a new purple patch with its post-lockdown modifications and Willows Dental Centre and Taylor Biddle Opticians have bounced back better than ever – with souped-up Covid-secure protocols designed to keep clients safer than a lockbox in lockdown. In fact, every business has PPE and more in place for essential peace of mind – so remember to get out there and use our high street shops, they desperately need us right now. Hi-Q Wolverhampton never closed at all of course, so book-in now before the MOT extension ends. There’s an accent on simple pleasures in this edition. Inside you’re sure to find an enjoyable outlet whether it’s in our Hair, Health and Beauty sections or in our bumper Sports section, featuring lots of golf (perks of being the Editor!) and tennis involving outdoor tennis schools at Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis & Social Club. Competitions make us happy too: we have three for you this time. And, fingers crossed, you’ll soon be able to get in shape again at Artisan’s personal training studio as well – I know Gisella’s itching to get back into her normal fitness regime. But more than anything else, we hope that our latest edition helps you to bring back some sense of normality and that it finds all of our readers safe and well. See you in September…

The local

property market by Nick Berriman

Is there life after lockdown for the property market? The simple and straightforward answer is definitely a resounding ‘YES’ – the market is incredibly buoyant , and I genuinely did not think that would be the message I would be conveying in my first, post lockdown article for Wolverhampton West! When the country entered lockdown at the end of March I was quite convinced that the property market within the country would effectively close down for the remainder of the year. I was quite pessimistic and fully believed that no-one would want to move to a new house until 2021! During lockdown we continued to operate with key staff working from home to ensure that all of our sales progression work continued and sales that were currently agreed were still managed in the normal fashion. What surprised me was the levels of interest that were continually being received. Enquiries were high and, whilst we could not arrange viewings or undertake valuations, the demand was there. Between our three offices we had almost 170 viewings to arrange once lockdown restrictions were lifted. Logistically this was a bit of a nightmare, not least because we

only found out that the lockdown rules for estate agency were being lifted by a press announcement at 10pm allowing us to return to work the following morning at 9am! The market recommenced with an immediate release of the pent-up interest that came during lockdown, and it has not stopped yet! I am continually asked by clients, ‘’Why are you so busy?’’ and the truth is, I do not really know! We are finding that many people have spent their time during lockdown revising their housing requirements. They have decided that their house is too small or too big, they now want somewhere to work from home, they have an apartment with no garden and want some external space and, in a couple of cases, have decided they no longer want to live with their current partner! These factors, coupled with the fact that January and February were exceptionally busy as the Brexit fears finally abated, have come together to create a strong environment within the housing sector. As I write this article it is the 23rd of the month. The Tettenhall Office alone has already agreed sales on over 30 properties this month with a capital value of in excess of £10.75 million and we have received instructions to sell over 30 new properties with a capital value of in excess of £10.5 million.

This sort of market has not been seen for many years. Properties that were available pre-lockdown are now selling over asking price and we have seen multiple cases of competitive bidding meaning that sellers are having the luxury of choosing to whom they sell. What I feared would be a very quiet buyers’ market post lockdown has turned out to be exactly the opposite. As Caroline, our sales manager in Tettenhall, has said many times – she has not seen a market this busy in her thirty years plus of working within the industry. The lettings arm of our business remained fully active throughout lockdown, primarily dealing with the day to day management of our property portfolio, which is currently more than 300 properties. Although systems had to be adapted and altered it remained paramount that full compliance associated with the lettings process was maintained and emergency maintenance issues were resolved without delay. The level of enquires received through April and May was parallel with our sales departments, with new and existing tenants still actively looking to move, which was then reflected in our record-breaking June figures. The rental market always astounds us with the continual growth it demonstrates, and the forecast for July and August is already in excess of the equivalent months during 2019. Whilst all is good at the moment it remains to be seen what will happen next in the market. I shall look at this in my next article when I hope to be able to deliver equally positive news!

N.D.Walters

The Carpet and Flooring Experts Behind the small exterior of Sedgley-based carpet and flooring specialists, N.D. Walters, lies a vast 6,000 square foot warehouse that’s filled with the best brands in carpets and flooring, as well as an extensive range of budget designs. As owner, Nick Walters, explains: “We supply all types of carpets, laminates, vinyls and rugs. We have a fantastic selection of Karndean, Amtico, Furlong, Quick-Step and V4 Wood flooring to choose from, as well as carpet ranges from leading manufacturers like, Axminster, Brintons, Greendale and Adams Carpets.” In fact, the family-run company has an impressive dedicated Karndean showroom: “We’re a Platinum retailer for Karndean and our extensive recently refurbished showroom is second in size only to Karndean’s itself.”

All of the company’s products are extremely competitively priced, as the business works closely with the Greendale Group, which is the largest carpet and flooring buying company in the UK. “Being a member of Greendale means that we can offer a huge range of products, but still compete in terms of price too, passing the savings on to the customer.” And there are always bargains to be had: “We have a lot of end-of-roll stock available all the time, so there are plenty of exciting prices to be found in store.”

28

And, there’s something to suit every home décor at the showroom: “We cater for all styles and tastes - we have very traditional designs, as well as the most up-to-date and fashionable ranges.” There’s also an impressive selection of rugs to choose from too. “Rugs instantly give the home a really cosy and comfortable feel and can complete the look of your room perfectly.”

Earning an excellent reputation in the industry – and celebrating 44 years in business this year – N.D. PAYCARE IN THE COMMUNITY

VolunteerS’ Week Community plays a huge role in Paycare and volunteering is very much an integral part of our ethos. There’s always lots going on during June to mark Volunteers Week but of course this year has been very different. The team has been continuing to do our bit to benefit Wolverhampton and the wider community, finding creative ways to help organisations secure valuable resources and equipment for workers on the frontline and to support those at higher risk, such as the food donations we’ve delivered to Good Shepherd to help those experiencing homelessness in the city. CEO Kevin Roger says: “It’s the little things that businesses can help with that can make a real practical difference. It’s important, now more than ever, to continue showing our commitment and to make sure those in our communities continue to receive the vital support they need.”

HaVen Helpline

SponSorSHip

A local charity which supports women and children at risk from domestic abuse has seen demand for advice soar during the Coronavirus pandemic lockdown.

The Haven Wolverhampton runs a 24-hour helpline and launched an additional live chat facility (sponsored by Paycare) in 2018 as a way for people to directly reach out to the charity rather than being signposted through the police or other agencies.

With self-referrals already 13 times higher than agency referrals during the first year of the live chat being live, now more than ever it is important that services like this are available to women in dire need of support. During the first few weeks of lockdown, The Haven saw a 60% increase in website visits. Jade Secker, Fundraising Manager at The Haven Wolverhampton, said: “Women in dire need of support can use the service discreetly and receive responses quickly which is crucial in many situations. Our dedicated live chat service is kindly sponsored by our long-term partners, Paycare, which has essentially given us the funding to help so many more vulnerable women and children in Wolverhampton and surrounding areas to feel empowered to reach out.” The Haven helpline is 24/7 and is free from a landline – 08000 194 400. The live chat is available from 9am to 5pm every weekday, and those in need can visit www.havenrefuge.org.uk for access.

is heaven-scent for Policyholders! A chance meeting between Paycare’s Kevin Rogers and Molton Brown’s Sarah White has led to a new partnership which is giving thousands the chance to refresh, unwind and uplift their senses! The pair met while watching a football match in Scotland prior to lockdown, and got talking about their respective roles and their commitment to helping people manage their physical and mental wellbeing. And so, the connection was formed between the Health

Cash Plan provider and the luxury fragrance brand – which has seen all Policyholders able to access exclusive products and offers from the fragrance, bath, body and hair care, and home collections between June 1st and 22nd. While it won’t replace the summer trips and welldeserved breaks people across the UK are missing out on this year, it’s hoped the treats will lift the spirits of Policyholders – and there are likely to be more exclusive offers launched later in the year too.

Businesses in the Black Country are no doubt under a huge strain to ensure their operations survive and overcome financial uncertainty as a result of COVID-19, in addition to the pressure of protecting jobs and staff wellbeing, and adapting to different working methods. Paycare is no exception – with a 30-strong team as well as the health and wellbeing of the 40,000 Policyholders across the UK to consider.

The team has worked hard to overcome challenging obstacles and ensure everyone stays safe and well, through signposting towards service such as mental health support and counselling, Online Health Assessments and Paycare Perks; working even more closely with Corporate Groups and increasing the volume of resources being provided to support the increased demand around health and wellbeing of their teams; and hosting E-Clinics through the Black Country Chamber of Commerce to support Patrons and Members through this challenging time. As a thank you for the passion, determination and hard work shown by the Paycare team, there has been an increased

flexibility around working hours, additional days of annual leave and early finishes to ensure they feel well rested and supported physically and emotionally, as well as providing small but highly-impactful rewards and recognition. CEO Kevin Rogers said: “Showcasing your loyalty to staff can absolutely be the difference in whether your business is able to merely survive, or absolutely thrive, through this pandemic and long afterwards. And hopefully, working together, we can help implement a lasting change in the way that business owners feel able to protect the health and wellbeing of their staff now and in the future — no matter what life throws their way.”

The

Golden Couple By Rob Taylor

P

rominent local charity fundraiser and cycling legend Hugh Porter is no stranger to success. A four-time world professional pursuit champion and pursuit champion at the 1966 Commonwealth Games, Hugh was made an MBE in 1973 for services to cycle racing. Now in his 80th year he is undoubtedly one of Tettenhall’s finest residents and, unsurprisingly, in accordance with the time-worn maxim, behind him stands a great woman: wife of 55 years, Anita, who is a success story in her own right. “We met on the plane in September 1964, travelling to the Tokyo Olympics and married the following year,” remembers Hugh. Anita’s sport was swimming. It didn’t take long for love to blossom against a backdrop of a career filled with riches, because 60 years ago Anita Lonsbrough – as she was then known - was the toast of the nation.

The golden couple at home– courtesy of Express & Star

It was in August, 1960, that the teenage Yorkshire swimmer struck Olympic gold in the 200m breaststroke, only one of two Brits to do so in that year’s summer games. In an era when the Olympics was for amateur athletes - unlike today’s sporting heroes, who have lottery funding to enable them to work full-time in their chosen events - Anita had to fit her preparation around her job, working in local government in Huddersfield.

Anita’s calmness was key to the race win and that report in the Mirror revealed an amazing factor behind it – a fly!

Early rising for swimming training before work and even at lunchtimes paid off that day when she faced her arch rival and favourite for the gold, Wiltrud Urselmann. However, the pre-race forecast was turned on its head as Anita won, beating the world-record holder by over half a second, in what the Daily Mirror described as “one of the most superbly-judged races in the history of sport.”

Coming off the back of that historic victory came a flood of accolades, beginning with a nomination for Sports Personality of the Year – or Sportsview Personality, as it was then known. But on this occasion she was pipped at the post by a surprise interloper, bronze medallist show-jumper, David Broome. Speculation was rife that this was because his sport was extremely popular at the time and received extensive TV coverage. However, Anita’s time would come.

“Just before the start I noticed it, exactly where I would dive,” Anita told the Mirror’s reporter. “For some queer reason I thought that I might swallow it! It was such a daft idea, I almost laughed. And that helped me to listen quite calmly for the starter’s gun.”

When she arrived back home in Huddersfield with her gold medal, Anita was given a civic reception by the Mayor and about a thousand people outside the Town Hall. Such occasions would become a regular occurrence for the immensely popular Yorkshire woman.

Hugh pictured at the ’80 for 80’ event at Aldersley Stadium

38

Anita was now truly a world class swimmer, having previously won gold medals at the Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff in 1958 in the 220yds breaststroke and 4 x 110yds medley relay. She had also gained a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke at the European championship. When wolverhampton west magazine

the Commonwealth Games came around again – in Perth, Australia – Anita struck gold three times in the 110 and 220yds breaststroke and 440yds individual medley. Her 1962 European championship gold medal in the 200m breaststroke brought considerable drama. A little off the pace at the 100m mark, Anita steadily inched her way in front to finally beat Dutch swimmer Klenie Bimolt and East German Ursula Kuper by about four feet. It was a triumph of pure endeavour, a moment when all her hours of training coalesced into glory.

Anita shows off her swimming Gold Medal on arrival back in London. She won the 200m breaststroke event in a new world record time of 2:49.5

“At the halfway stage I thought I’d had it,” Anita said afterwards, “but I kept telling myself ‘kick, kick kick.’ My legs feel like water now.”

Setting off at the flag waived by Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Claire Darke, Hugh and his group of friends covered a distance of approximately 22.7 miles in around 90 minutes in rainy conditions better suited to swimming. A well-supported outdoor spin class took place at the same time in the finishing straight under the stand canopy. In total the effort raised £7,582.00.

And while Anita and Hugh’s most recent efforts will not break records and be recorded in the history books, they are more essential to our local community than ever before and well worth celebrating.

B

efore the year was out, Anita made more history when she was at last voted BBC Sportsview personality of the year, becoming the first woman to win the award. She was then made an MBE in 1963 for her services to swimming. At the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, Anita was given the honour of carrying the British flag at the opening ceremony and, though she only finished sixth in the individual medley final, she came away with something much more precious: her lifelong partner, Hugh. Anita and Hugh were then the golden couple of sport and today are as committed to charity fundraising as they are to each other. Both Anita and Hugh are patrons of Compton Care and recently organised a fundraising event, 80 for 80, which comprised 80 laps of Aldersley cycling track, to celebrate Hugh’s 80th birthday, in aid of the charity.

“WV Active gave me great support and kindly allowed me to use the stadium free of charge,” says Hugh. www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

Tech for

‘the new normal’ L

ockdowns may be largely lifted but we’re going back to a very different world at work and at school: many more of us are working from home at least some of the time, and school pupils and college students are getting used to doing more online learning.

That can be a challenge, because when most of us bought the things we have in our homes we weren’t thinking about using them for work – so for example dining tables may be great for chatting with family or friends, but they’re not ideal for long periods on a laptop. If you or others in your household are going to be spending longer periods working, especially on computers, comfort isn’t just nice: it’s essential. Spending too much time with poor posture or awkward working spaces can be bad for your health, as it increases the risk of physical stresses and strains. In some cases that can lead to painful repetitive strain injuries.

The good news is that you don’t need to do much to make your working or studying environment safe. It’s all about right angles: when you sit, your back should be straight, your feet flat on the ground (or on a footrest) and your body at right angles, so your forearms and your thighs should be horizontal and your back, upper arms and calves vertical. If you can afford it, invest in a good quality chair with back support and a decently padded or sprung base – your back and bum will thank you for it in the long term – and if you get one with wheels, invest in a floor protector too. Wheels can do serious damage to carpets and laminate flooring.

Office chairs don’t need to look like office chairs: this chair from IKEA comes in an attractive and easy-toclean white, so it doesn’t make your room look like a meeting room.

JÄRVFJÄLLET chair, £150, IKEA

A powerful laptop with a clear, large screen is essential. Techradar calls the 14-inch Acer Swift 3 “the best budget laptop in the world.”

If your Wi-Fi is slow, the culprit is probably the router: if it’s an older one or came with your broadband service, it probably isn’t the fastest.

No space? No problem. An unobtrusive corner desk gives you space to work without taking up too much room in your room.

New furniture styles for your home “But I can assure you that it won’t cost you to shop at Pargeters, very often we are cheaper and will price match the leading brands. We pride ourselves on offering the lowest possible prices combined with the highest standard of customer service.” Indeed, the store is renowned for its exceptional service and that’s why it has remained a firm favourite with locals, ever since its doors first opened over 90 years ago.

If you’re busy updating, improving or redesigning your home interior this summer, you’ll no doubt be keen to find a selection of quality and contemporary furniture to complete the new look. Displaying modern designs, from leading British brands, over three floors, there are looks to suit every home interior style. And, what’s more there’s an incredible 25% off most leading brands as part of the company’s amazing summer sale event. As Miles explains: “We have got lots of fantastic new displays at the showroom and we’re delighted to offer our customers a substantial discount in our summer sale event.”

A change in direction has taken place over the last five years at the family-run store, which has seen the business focusing on being an upholstery specialist that no longer sells bedroom furniture, curtains and carpets. Now instead, there is a brand-new department that specialises in Sherborne lift and rise beds, reclining chairs - which are all exempt from VAT - as well as sofas to match. With all of this and more you’re sure to find outstanding designs and style at affordable prices when you pay a visit. In fact, customers at Pargeters are always surprised by the independent stores’ low prices, as Miles explains: “Sometimes an established business and single store furniture shop can be deemed to be more expensive to buy from than larger group stores.

Unlike their competitors, the staff at Pargeters aren’t on commission, which means their focus is entirely on helping you make the purchase that’s right for you – if, of course, you decide to buy from the company. “We don’t sell ‘add-ons’ – like finance or insurance, which some companies use to boost their profits,” adds Miles. Pargeters are the longest established premier stockist of G Plan furniture. In recognition of this they are offering customers a special promotion of 30% off all G Plan furniture in the summer sale. The company offers free delivery within a 50 mile radius and will also take your old items away free of charge. So, whatever you’ve got in mind for your home interior this summer, make it look amazing with the addition of a quality buy from Pargeters.

PARGETERS SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES We are offering customers the opportunity to shop safely on their own or with family members (maximum of 3 people). The showroom will also be open to 2 more walk-in customers at any one time. The current social distancing guidelines will be adhered to at all times. Staff will be available to assist you and answer any questions while following the current guidelines. Personal Protective Equipment will be used in the showroom by all staff.

Please ring (01384 394176) to book your preferred appointment time at the showroom between the hours of 9am and 4pm Monday to Saturday. Free customer car parking available adjacent to the showroom, please ask for directions.

The best apps for outdoor activities Best weather app: Dark Sky (Apple) It’s just been bought by Apple so unfortunately Android users can’t rely on it much longer (try Carrot or Accuweather instead), but on iPhones and iPads Dark Sky is the weather app to beat thanks to its accurate onehour forecasting and week-ahead views. Don’t plan a trip without it.

Best traffic app: Waze Navigation & Live Traffic (Apple, Android) Waze is a brilliant app for drivers: it uses information from all its users to develop a really accurate real-time picture of what’s happening on the roads to help you avoid accidents, roadworks and other causes of congestion. It even helps you find the cheapest petrol stations.

Best exercise app: Strava (Apple, Android, fitness trackers) Strava’s traffic tripled during the lockdown, with good reason: it’s a superb app for any kind of outdoor exercise on foot or on wheels. In addition to accurate GPS tracking and health monitoring it enables you to track your progress and compete in leader boards with friends or with complete strangers.

HELPING THE HELPERS Rotary faces up to Covid 19

‘Play Packs carefully created to support development of young children at home’

The five Rotary clubs across the city have been severely affected by the Covid19 crisis and major fundraising events have been cancelled. In normal times, the Wolverhampton club stages three large events each year to provide support for city organisations. Best Foot Forward, the annual community walk staged at Aldersley Stadium, which has raised over £130,000 since its inception seven years ago, and the Dragon Boat Challenge at Himley Park, which has raised over £400,000 in the nineteen years of its operation, have both become casualties of the pandemic. Club President Brian Bailey says “These are challenging times and we have had to make difficult, and unwelcome, decisions. We are very mindful that, with the loss of these two major events, city charities will be deprived of something in the order of £40,000 this year. We remain hopeful that our third fundraising project, the Tree of Remembrance in the Wulfrun Centre will be able to go ahead in December.” Despite these setbacks, the club has taken active measures in an attempt to continue to support local causes, particularly those that have suffered a loss of income and an increase in demand as a result of lockdown. By dipping into reserves, and backed up by personal donations from members, it has been possible to donate £2,000 to The Good Shepherd Ministry refuge for the homeless and rough sleepers, enabling the purchase of food. The Haven Refuge for the victims of domestic violence also received £2,000, which was used to purchase food and bedding The International Rotary Foundation, based in the USA, created a $3million fund to be used by 52

Rotary clubs across the world. The Wolverhampton share was used in a project to provide PPE Visors for volunteers and NHS workers at refuges, care homes and hospitals. The fund has also been used to donate social distancing packs to Compton Care shops to protect volunteers after the reopening of their shops. The packs comprise a screen for the cashiers, hand sanitising units, floor graphics and signs giving guidance to shoppers. As a result of its close connections with charities across the city, Rotary was approached by the James Beattie Charitable Trust to administer a £10,000 fund to distribute smaller grants to ad hoc and existing organisations that have been taking special measures to support local people suffering from Covid-19 issues. The Wolverhampton club, in conjunction with the other four city clubs, readily took up the task and a total of twenty grants, ranging between £280 and £750 have been quickly paid to groups providing such vital necessities as food and ‘play at home’ packs which are of great benefit to children coping with the emotional impact of the pandemic. Typical of these was the grant made to The Wolves Play Cafe, supporting children and carers through play. Working with Low Hill Nursery School, Play Packs were provided from the grant to support young children confined to home during this challenging time. Adds President Brian “There can be no doubt that the profound changes over these last few weeks mean that we, and Rotary Clubs throughout the world, have to accept the need to adapt and change. The pandemic has denied us of some of the means by which we raise our funds, while at the same time creating new levels of need in the communities we seek to serve. We will find the means to face and overcome this new challenge – it’s what Rotary does”. wolverhampton west magazine

The perfect finishing touch‌ For many of us, our gardens have been our much-needed solace throughout the trials of this chaotic year. Whether it has sparked an outdoor hobby or simply served as our safe-haven for a socially distanced barbecue with our loved ones. If anything, our gardens deserve an extra splash of special recognition this year - which is where outdoor lighting will prove a fitting companion!

Not only will lights flatteringly show off the work gone into your garden, they provide a beautiful, calming ambience to enjoy hours after the sun has set. Sometimes our summer gatherings are relished even greater in a softly moonlit evening rather than hysterically fanning ourselves from the scorching sun of day.

Whatever your garden yearns for, Lighting R Us will be able to match it with their exceptional range of lighting, both indoor and outdoor. They’re also equipped with first-rate knowledge on where best to put lights which will flatter your garden most!

With countless styles available, there will be lighting to complement all gardens and for every purpose. Ground lights will instantly illuminate pathways and patios, while lanterns will inject some vintage glamour. From solar powered to battery; wall lights to post - the list goes on...

S u m m e r Gardening

Tips are provided by Ann Winwood, Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton

As we move from June into July and August there’s still time to plant larger pots of Geraniums, Fuchsias, Cosmos and Dahlias to fill in any gaps in borders.

Water to get established and feed on a weekly basis. Dead head regularly and you’ll have colour through to the first autumn frosts, which hopefully will be late starting. Keep sowing or planting salad crops such as lettuce, spinach, spring onions and radish in the veg patch to get a continuous harvest. Use very fine netting to cover cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots and other particularly susceptible vegetables against flies, pigeons and butterflies. Harvest peas and runner beans regularly whilst they are young and tender, freeze any spares for home grown vegetables during the winter months. Keep beans and peas moist and spray over the foliage to encourage pods to set. There’s plenty of choice in the herbaceous sections at the moment as well as the ever popular Lupins – there’s a large range of new Salvias, Monardas and Echinacea as well as Delphiniums and the butterfly-loving

Verbena bonanariensis and the ever popular perennial Geraniums. Hostas are good for a shady spot with their coloured foliage, watch out for the slugs though, especially if the ground is damp. Now is a good time to add new plants to your pond. There’s a good selection of marginal and deep water plants available. Keep marginals on a ledge at the edges of the pool and not too deep – Iris, Caltha, Primulas and Bulrushes are all good examples. For the middle/deeper parts of the pool water lilies are good and can give good protection for any fish you have in the pool. Most plants come ready planted in aquatic pots so just need placing into the pool. Don’t forget marginals need not be planted in the pool – if you have a damp, boggy area plants like Iris, Primulas and Lobelias will all grow happily.

For new potatoes in October, or at Christmas, plant seed potatoes in tubs in July and August. Growth will finish in October, leave the tubers in their pots until required for cooking. Remember they’ll need frost protection once the winter frosts appear in November and December. To complete another gardening cycle or start a new one depending on how you look at it the spring flowering bulbs will be appearing in garden centres from the end of August! If you want Hyacinths in flower for Christmas, they must be planted and put into a dark cool place in September. Most varieties require an 8-10 week cool period followed by 2-3 weeks of warmer conditions to bring them into flower. Use a compost specifically for bulbs as it will contain charcoal to keep the soil sweet.

For the safety of our customers and team members, we have implemented social distancing measures throughout the store. These measures have been in operation since the reopening of the centre and have proved to be very efficient in the current exceptional circumstances, keeping customer inconvenience to a minimum. 62

Protect your car with a parking post from Profence

There’s been a rise in car thefts from driveways in recent years and so, protecting your vehicle has never been more important. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to deter thieves and make sure that your car stays on your driveway, as Shane Gamble explains: “Here at Profence we’re really pleased to be able to offer our customers a range of parking posts which will serve to protect their vehicle” Although Profence are fencing experts they also install bollards for both domestic and commercial clients so moving into parking posts was a natural progression. “There are many options when it comes to parking posts: there are posts that fold down, lift out and also push into the ground and we supply and install them all.” Whatever your requirements the Profence team can help you find the parking post that best suits your needs. “A small driveway will only need one post located behind the vehicle whereas a larger driveway will need several posts strategically placed for proper protection.”

64

Installing a post is a really simple way to give you peace-of-mind, whether your leaving your car on your driveway overnight or whilst you’re away on holiday. “There is no doubt that a parking post is a real deterrent to thieves because it shows that the homeowner takes security seriously and is doing what they can to safeguard their vehicle from being targeted.” Of course, the presence of a post also ensures your driveway is kept clear: “Posts can be used to keep parking spaces free too, which is particularly useful for our commercial clients.” Whatever the client’s requirements the Profence team are always onhand to offer help and advice. “We help our clients find the solution that’s right for them so that they can protect their vehicle,” adds Shane.

So, whatever car you drive make sure that it is protected with the help of a parking post from Profence.

Brits:

we don’t mean what we say When a member of the online global community Reddit asked the question “Non-British people of Reddit, what about Britain baffles you?” they received almost 40,000 comments in response. Here are five things about British culture that particularly puzzle non-Brits:

1. SARCASM The British are famous for their sarcastic turn of phrase and a recent YouGov poll asked a group of Brits and a group of Americans to interpret the meaning of various well-known expressions and phrases. While most members of the British group took the expression “with the greatest respect” to have pretty much the opposite meaning, more than half of the American group took it at face value. One Reddit member, shocked at the way her British boyfriend spoke to his family members, wailed: “They’re so rude to each other. FOR FUN.”

By Kate McLelland 2. BRITISH NOSH Food is also an area that causes misunderstanding and controversy. Watching The Great British Bake Off, American Britt Rivera was shocked to find that a Yorkshire pudding wasn’t actually a pudding, tweeting “Yorkshire pudding is a little bread bowl, not a yogurt-like dessert?” With the exception of Australia and New Zealand, Britain is one of very few places where Marmite is actually enjoyed. Reddit users have conducted their own opinion poll on the famous spread, with one Slovenian contributor commenting: “I remember my first experience with Marmite was so terrible. Someone brought that thing to our house and I tried it with a spoon ... so disgusting!!”

3. UK ACCENTS According to the British Library, we have almost eighty different accents and dialects in the British Isles, so perhaps it’s not surprising that this was another frustration for overseas Reddit users. “So many accents. People fifteen minutes away having another accent,” one moaned.

4. OUR LOVE OF TEA Responding to Reddit’s “What about Britain baffles you?” challenge, another user stormed “Your obsession with tea!” Writing for The Week magazine, American author and journalist Jessica Pan describes how she sensed growing resentment amongst her English colleagues after regularly refusing their offers of tea: “I might as well have said ‘I do not want to be part of your society’ or ‘Your tea is gross and so are you.’ That’s because in Britain, I soon learned, rejecting a cup of tea is like rejecting a gesture of friendship.”

5. OUR MANY NAMES The many different names we use to describe our island nation has also caused a good deal of confusion, with some overseas observers unsure whether to call us Great Britain, the British Isles, the British Islands, the United Kingdom or just plain old Britain. To confuse things even further, the UK’s official name is the ‘United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’. During our long and colourful history, British people have absorbed the best bits from several different cultures, so perhaps it’s not surprising that such a melting pot of habits and customs continues to cause bewilderment. It’s clear that our culture is seen by others as eccentric, weird, confusing – even a tad annoying – but it’s equally clear that we Brits have no intention of changing our ways for anyone.

Royston & Nick bring us all the lockdown gossip

ROYSTON & NICK WITH RUBY (DOG) AND FRANKIE (CAT).

It’s been a strange few months but thankfully things are getting back to normal, and the moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived: we can finally get our hair done. Whether you’ve been struggling with DIY dye jobs or your locks are looking a little too ‘au natural’ there’s no doubt that you’re excited for a brand-new hair look this summer. And, the award-winning team at Royston Blythe can’t wait to get back to doing what they do best: making their clients look amazing. We caught up with Royston and Nick for a post-lockdown chat to find out the latest salon news, catch-up on all the gossip from the last four months and hear more about the excellent campaign they started to say ‘thank you’ to frontline NHS workers. So, how was lockdown for you guys? Royston: Well, we had a lot of

fun at home and we really enjoyed spending time together. I’ve discovered that I’m a pretty good gardener, I cleaned all the windows and Nick has done housework that he’s never done in his life! We spent a lot of time walking, eating and watching TV and we helped out friends, family and elderly residents in our hamlet who were struggling to get shopping.

GREEN TIPS:

Commuter Cycling UK transport secretary Grant Shapps announced a £2 billion plan in May to boost cycling.

C

learly, the ongoing need for social distancing is part of this drive, but cleaner air, better health and less time wasted in traffic are of great benefit to us all and the environment. Here are a couple of ideas which might make you seriously consider a bike as your commuter vehicle of choice.

An electric bike looks like a normal bike, and can use cycle paths, but when you come to a hill the motor kicks in and gives you an extra push. You still have to peddle, but it’ll save that extra exertion that has you arriving at work red-faced and sweaty. Tubeless (puncture-proof) tyres will transform your cycling. These have a special sealant inside which sets on exposure to air. Should you pick up a puncture – that’s a hole not a gash – the escaping air forces the liquid to the surface and seals the hole. Nine times out of ten you won’t even be aware of it.

has showers at work. If you don’t, slow down for the last five minutes of your ride so that you are already cool when you stop. GET INSURED! That’s your bike against theft, you against injury, and pedestrians and car owners against you having a mishap on your journey.

You might be one of the lucky few who

special ‘me time’ that we looked forward to every week. We didn’t realise how much we value our relationship with our hairdresser - who becomes our friend over time - and how much we miss that salon experience. Our very own sales director, Gisella Wiley, was among the many women – and men – who were ecstatic when the announcement was made that hairdressers were back in business. As she explains: “I’ve been a regular at Royston Blythe for many years now and I visit the salon twice a week. The team do an amazing job on my hair and I walk away from my appointments looking – and feeling – great, so I really missed my visits during those four months. “I’d tried to take care of my hair

Aside from regular blow dry’s with Charles at the salon she also books in for a colour and extensions. “I can’t wait to have my new extensions put in and feel like myself again.” And, Gisella isn’t alone in being super excited for her appointment. “My friend Lindsey text me to say she was dancing around the room when she had the news that she’d also got booked in at Royston Blythe,” adds Gisella.

Get Moving

for Mental Health Virtual exercise classes Joe Wicks runs weekday PE classes at 9am on his YouTube channel and you don’t need to have children to take part. If the family classes are too energetic, try some of his other workouts, such as the ones aimed at seniors.

During the lockdown, with so little choice of things to do, it may well be that a walk round the block became part of your daily routine.

T

hat should have reminded you of the physical and mental benefits of fresh air and moving around.

But as lockdown eases, if you find you have reverted to form and even the very word ‘exercise’ makes you want to retreat to the sofa to binge watch Netflix, we hear you! It really doesn’t have to be a chore though. Any type of exercise is useful, as long as it suits you and you do enough of it. It should be something you enjoy or it will be hard to find the motivation to do it regularly. As the saying goes: necessity is the mother of invention and the last couple of months have been amazing for introducing exercise that doesn’t involve

being in a gym. From martial arts in the garden, online yoga and cycling to just that brisk walk round the block.

Exercise to boost your mood Aerobic exercises, where your heart rate is elevated, have been shown to help depression. They reduce your levels of cortisol (AKA the ‘stress hormone’). You could try jogging (using the Couch to 5K app to keep yourself motivated), a virtual exercise class or just dancing in your kitchen.

Exercise to ease anxiety Yoga and pilates can have a direct impact on your nervous system, helping to calm it down and ease anxiety. Some studies have shown that yoga can also be beneficial for tackling depression, alleviating stress and even reducing pain and blood pressure.

Don’t fancy PE? You’ll find dance, martial arts and more online. The dance troupe Diversity teaches regular classes on www.20dv.co.uk. And you can take part in Oti Mabuse’s free dance classes on her YouTube channel whenever you want.

Exercising with a health condition If you’re worried that exercise might make an existing health condition worse, do speak to your GP. Finally the NHS offers more than 20 instructor-led workouts at www.nhs.uk/conditions/nhsfitness-studio, starting from just 10 minutes long. There’s even a 30 minute workout using your sofa!

Keep motivated Make a note of how you feel before and after your workout. Try rating your anxiety and mood out of 10 and see whether the workout has had a positive effect.

Exercise in nature According to a study by the University of Exeter, spending two hours a week in nature is good for both your mental and physical wellbeing. This could mean your local park, a field or even doing an outdoor circuits session in your garden.

A big From thank you

the Willows

It’s our connections not our isolations that makes us stronger Local engineering firms have been designing ventilators and amazingly some pizza shops have been using their ovens to bend the plastic sheets to make shielding visors.

Nobody loves tough times, but there’s something about them especially in England that really brings out the best in people. I for one have loved the community spirit that’s been shown. In a time of isolation, it’s been amazing to see how many people rallied around. I’ve loved seeing all the rainbows painted on windows and outside houses while delivering essential medicines around the local area. I’ve loved clapping for our selfless NHS workers (although it would be nice if the government paid them all better too). I’ve seen at one end of the spectrum Women’s Institute groups and embroidery clubs sewing surgical gowns for the hospitals , and at the other end I’ve seen people with 3D printers, designing visor holders and printing them in the thousands. 98

So many people have pulled together during this time. I’ve been especially thankful to my team who in between answering calls from hundreds of patients in discomfort over lockdown and arranging to get them emergency tooth filling kits, recementing kits and essential medicine. They’ve rallied around and made temporary food banks for the community for those who were struggling financially. We had so many people come and bring food for families that were struggling to feed themselves and their kids. In conjunction with Tettenhall Round Table we managed to get goody bags to the nursing staff at the hospitals, who’d run out of toothpaste, toothbrushes and toiletries over this time. The boys at the Round Table got loads of sponsorship and donations and kindly delivered them to the grateful staff at New Cross Hospital. Let’s not forget Captain Tom who raised a phenomenal amount of money for NHS charities, an amazing achievement. New synergies have been formed such as Creative agencies like Jask Creative partnering

up with Wolverhampton-based homeless charity Good Shepherd who’ve helped people with mental health issues getting shelter. Haven, the Wolverhampton-based shelter for victims of domestic abuse, has seen a rise in domestic abuse and has done amazingly well at keeping victims safe during this unprecedented difficult time. There are thousands of other stories of people helping others out during this time, and I’m sorry that we’ve missed some out here. Us humans are supposed to live in communities, we’re designed to be tribal and each to have our own strengths and work together. By supporting each other we all become stronger. This won’t be the last pandemic we face but I’m positive that having seen the way our friends and businesses have rallied together, we will all come through this with massive innovation and significantly stronger than we’ve ever been. It’s a funny dichotomy but while in isolation, somehow, we’ve managed to connect even more. And if anything has come out of this time, this can only be a good thing.

RISING

TO A CHALLENGE Our mission is to help members keep healthy, play sport and make friends. It was important that during the lockdown we found ways to adapt and continue to help our members’ health and wellbeing. We achieved this by moving the gym classes ‘online’ with recordings available on our Facebook page and YouTube channel (Search wltsc) receiving over 50000 views to date.

Further government guidance allowed outdoor activity including Tennis, touchtennis and personal training. Reassured by all the safety measures that were put in place, Tennis proved very successful with over 300 of our members taking part with over 2500 bookings in total over our 13 Tennis courts (artificial grass, clay and grass). For our squash, racketball and gym users we also introduced touchtennis, a relatively new sport that is quick to learn and in 2 months had 780 bookings helping our tennis and non-tennis

players challenge themselves to learning a new sport. With the government continuing to relax measures, we shall ensure safety is paramount and will welcome all new and existing members. So if you would like to challenge yourself to learn a new sport or would like to join our community for all the benefits it brings, please contact us…

The History

of the Pandemic

By Catherine Rose Empire and millions of people died from its rapidly fatal effects. Another outbreak occurred during the Crimean War between 1853 and 1856. Nurse Florence Nightingale became famous at this time for her tireless efforts to improve unsanitary conditions.

A vaccine was created in 1885. Smallpox, caused by the variola virus, is one of the most devastating diseases. Various outbreaks have occurred over the centuries, the earliest around 10,000 BC. During the twentieth century alone, smallpox was responsible for up to five hundred million deaths worldwide. It was declared by WHO to be eradicated in 1980.

Despite our increased global mobility making pandemics more likely, diseases have crossed country borders for centuries.

O

ne of the earliest pandemics, the Justinian plague, began in 500 AD, spreading from Egypt into Palestine, the Byzantine Empire and then Europe. Similar to bubonic plague, it killed twenty-six per cent of the world’s population – around five hundred million – thwarting Roman Emperor Justinian’s plans to revitalise the Roman Empire. 1347 saw the first wave of the Black Death, a pneumonic form of bubonic plague – one of the most devastating pandemics in human history. Originating in Asia, it is likely to have travelled 102

along the Silk Route and then by ship into Europe. It is believed, as with later outbreaks, that it was spread via fleas contaminated with the yersinia pestis bacteria. The disease is estimated to have killed hundreds of millions of people worldwide and up to sixty per cent of the population in Europe. Characterised by a fever and buboes, the Black Death could kill within hours. It lasted until 1352 and had huge economic and social repercussions. Instances of bubonic plague returned over subsequent centuries. In 1665, the Great Plague of London killed twenty per cent of its population. The term ‘quarantine’ was coined in Venice referring to a period of forty days – the optimum time necessary for the spread of an epidemic to be contained. Cities that implemented quarantines were found to be less affected by fast-transmitting diseases. Numerous cholera pandemics began in Russia in 1815. Acquired through contaminated water and food, the British Army unwittingly spread this serious bacterial illness across the British

COVOD-19 is not the first pandemic virus to have originated in animals. The Spanish flu, which struck worldwide during 1918/19, is believed to have started in birds. Although nicknamed the Spanish flu, it appeared in Kansas, America in 1918. Due to World War I, many European countries had news blackouts and initial reports came from Madrid, leading people to believe it had begun in Spain. It was able to spread rapidly in the unsanitary and confined conditions of the trenches. Unlike regular flu, it targeted healthy young people and came at a time when populations had already been decimated. This flu was particularly deadly, leading to severe bronchial pneumonia. It infected a third of the world’s population and resulted in around fifty to one hundred million deaths. Today, we are better informed about the spread of disease, our lives are more sanitary and scientists can more easily predict outcomes and implement strategies that contain it.

The GOLF CLUB you need to join… Why should you Join South Staffs Golf Club?

C

lub manager, Sue LeBeau explains: “We have restructured our fees and offer great value for money to our members at £1175 per year for full membership with no joining fee. With the option to pay monthly at no extra cost that is less than £98 per month! “We pride ourselves on being Wolverhampton’s premier golf club with an outstanding course which has been maintained to the highest standard even through lockdown. “A warm and friendly welcome awaits you – even in lockdown our Captain has been calling all new members to welcome them into the club. “We started getting a steady number of enquires and new members over the winter when traditionally that is the slowest time for new joiners. Why? Because our course was able to remain open during the very wet period we had when most other courses were closed. Visitors were so impressed they came and joined us. We really do offer year-round golf on main greens and have a limited number of memberships still available. “Full membership not required? – take a look at our flexible membership options – we are confident we can find something that works for you including our very popular House/Playing category.

Our clubhouse is being refurbished! “During lockdown we have been progressive and taken advantage of the closure of the clubhouse to undertake a refurbishment project. Our new spike bar and associated areas will give us a lovely open space for members to enjoy with 104

the flexibility of separating some of the areas off for private hire rooms for our visitors and corporate members. These areas will complement our dining room refurbishment undertaken a while ago and means we can offer a variety of flexible options for private functions. “We are now taking provisional bookings for winter functions as well as for 2021 – so whether you are looking for a select wedding reception venue, a private party or celebration meal, a birthday afternoon tea or looking to book your Christmas event early – please consider our lovely venue. “Additionally, any SME looking for Corporate facilities albeit meetings, luncheons or dinner, or golf days – why not consider South Staffs Golf Club, we would be happy to show you around and work to give you a great experience”.

NEWSFLASH – we will be opening our dining room as “The Danescourt Restaurant” this winter on Friday and Saturday nights. Members of the public will be able to reserve tables to come and enjoy our fabulous facilities and food.

Golf just at the Gets better With longer days and the promise of sunshine, why not join probably the most improved club and the best value golf membership in the area. Wergs Golf Club offers a superb 18-hole, 6644 -yard course in a glorious rural setting, with 14 water hazards, 52 bunkers and 11 holes with out of bounds. A very good test of golf. Giving good value for money is undoubtedly key to the continued success of the club. In conjunction with this there has been significant investment in the course, while in lockdown we have removed approximately 100 overgrown conifer trees which were overpowering the course, rebuilt two greens to USGA specifications, built 3 new tees and laid over 800 yards of drainage pipe, so we have been busy. Welcoming visitors and corporate groups, the club’s popularity is certainly growing, make sure you don’t miss out on the great facilities available.

• New corporate memberships are currently on offer all for an annual cost of £500 +VAT. This includes: • A free advertising panel on one of the tees • Two four ball every month • Use of the sports lounge for meetings with free WI-FI • Reduced rates on corporate golf days The club itself provides a variety of new features including a new covered 8 bay driving range with 50 balls costing just £3.00. The golf driving range is open 7 days per week and gives golfers of all abilities a great place to practise and improve their game at any time of the year. Alternatively, you may like to chat with our resident PGA professional Shaun Ball. With over 30 years’ experience, Shaun has the knowledge to give practical tips focussing on specific areas to improve your game. You can choose to play the full ‘championship competition course’ off the white tees, the ‘general play course’ off the yellow tees or the ‘short course’ off the red tees, all of which provide their own unique characteristics and challenges.

Wergs have some current special offers:- The 5-year deal giving new members 3 years at normal priced subs and years 4 and 5 at half price. We are also giving new members who join in groups of 4 or more, 25% discount on their first year subscription. Our Sports Lounge has three large screen TV’s with Sky Sports so you won’t miss any major sporting events. BACK

to Nature Keeping kids entertained is difficult at the best of times. But having already endured weeks in lockdown and a return to complete freedom looking to be some way off, it’s a challenge to keep your little ones occupied and to tear older children away from a screen. These ideas might help though!

Take the indoors out What does your child enjoy doing that could be done outdoors? Could you make cookie dough at the garden table rather than the kitchen table? Is there any reason a board game can’t be played on a picnic rug? Could you set crafts up on a plastic sheet? (On the plus side, it saves your carpet getting covered in paint, glitter and chocolate.)

112

By Kate Duggan

Play to their interests Younger children often like ticking off a list of things to spot when they’re out, or collecting petals, leaves and pebbles for a craft activity. If your child is an animal lover, could you go on a bug hunt? If they enjoy solving puzzles, could you go geocaching or set up a treasure hunt? Active kids might enjoy a simple obstacle course in the garden or throwing balls to knock down tin cans.

Shake things up Most of us like a bit of variety in life. Even moving a swing to a different part of the garden or trying some different games can help to reignite a child’s interest. On a more practical level, a reorganisation of their bedroom or a shared space can be exciting for them.

Play games My eight-year-old loathes going for a walk. With a passion. And he doesn’t hesitate to let us know just how boring he finds it. So our family walks tend to be less about

walking and more about playing games on the move. His favourite is a game where we adults challenge the kids to impersonate an animal. When he was younger, it was a case of “Can you hop like a kangaroo?” “Can you slither like a snake?” Now it’s evolved into “Can you charge like a short-sighted rhino?” “Can you soar like an eagle with a broken wing?” We also play hide and seek and other games.

Build it into a routine If you have the option, it might be worth setting a family rule that you all have to spend a certain amount of time outside every day, even if it’s just bouncing round the garden.

Don’t be afraid of bribery I’m not suggesting you pay your child to get active, but there’s nothing wrong with promising an ice lolly or half an hour of screen time after a bike ride now and then.

Is now a good tIme

to prepare or review a Will? The last few months have seen many changes for us all and as we adjust, self isolation and social distancing has led many to review their personal affairs to ensure these are up to date. One of the most important documents to help achieve this is a Will. A valid Will ensures your wishes are legally binding once you have passed away, helps you take control of how you wish to leave your estate and protects those you wish to benefit in the event of your death. Do not assume that your spouse will automatically inherit everything if you are married, or (if you are not married), that cohabiting for several years will lead to an automatic right to inherit. Recent statistics indicate the demand for Will writing services has increased by thirty percent as people seek certainty and peace of mind. This is not however without difficulties. Although telephone appointments are now the primary method for taking Will instructions, those who are most at risk and in need of a Will, for example those in care homes or in hospital, may still find it difficult to provide Will instructions in this way. In addition, if a capacity assessment is required this could prove a lengthy process given the current pressures on the NHS. Amongst the many other difficulties currently faced, executing Wills has become a real issue. The consequences of a Will being deemed invalid are severe and could mean that a person’s estate is distributed according to an

old Will or even under the rigid laws of intestacy, which could see unintended beneficiaries inheriting. It is therefore an important issue to get right. Some overseas Governments have introduced temporary emergency legislation; however, whilst the Government here is reviewing potential reform of the law on executing Wills there is unlikely to be emergency legislation or relaxation of the strict rules on execution that are designed to protect individuals.

The legislation around Wills is nearly 200 years old, dating back to 1837. Whilst modernisation is needed, any reform must be balanced against the important safeguards in place to protect vulnerable individuals against risks such as undue influence and fraud. One requirement for a validly executed Will that is causing particular difficulty is the requirement for the presence of two independent witnesses at the same time and who must each sign the Will in the presence of the person making the Will. The witness must be 18 or over and cannot be a beneficiary of the Will or their spouse/civil partner, as if one of them were to sign; they would lose any benefit under the Will. In reality most people are still only in contact with close family who are the intended beneficiaries of the Will and who therefore cannot be a witness. This is one of several traps to be mindful of, with the use of electronic signatures being another. Whilst the law allows electronic signatures

for deeds and other forms of contract, they are not valid for Wills. There are various ways to ensure you execute a valid Will in these times. The starting point is ensuring current Government guidelines regarding social distancing and isolation for those who need it are adhered to. As expert Will writing Solicitors the Private Client team at Rees Page have adapted quickly and effectively to overcome the current difficulties faced to enable you to still prepare a valid Will whilst ensuring the safety of everyone involved. This includes the use of safeguarding measures and adapting physical meetings whether outside or by a prearranged appointment in the office. These truly are unprecedented times, but this should not stop you considering the future for yourself and your loved ones. If you are thinking about making a Will it is important you seek professional legal advice, as whilst do-it-yourself wills using online templates may seem the easy answer, they can carry serious risks if done wrong.

Tracey and the specialist Private Client team at Rees Page Solicitors can guide you through the current complexities and explain the options available specific to your circumstances. Contact Tracey now on:

Buying and selling your home

during the Covid-19 crisis to face appointments booked in advance. Although we’re very happy to do telephone and Zoom meetings too. If you do want to come to our offices, we can assure you we’ve taken all precautions and implemented a number of measures to keep you and our teams safe. These include hand sanitising stations, one-way systems in offices where this is possible, protective plastic screens, social distancing and regular deep cleans of offices used for meetings.

During weeks of lockdown, housing sales across the UK plummeted. But as restrictions are being lifted, Jarna Rahman head of FBC Manby Bowdler’s Conveyancing team, takes a look at the aspects of buying and selling a home during a pandemic: Whilst buying and selling property wasn’t officially suspended during the lockdown, the restrictions on movement certainly had an impact.

The Government urged people to ‘adapt and be flexible’ and that was our mantra as well as we continued to work on clients’ property transactions so they were ready to take place when the time was right. When restrictions were lifted on May 14, estate agents could conduct in-person house viewings again and buyers could finally move into the homes they had completed on. You can put your house on the market and of course, speak to estate agents and do the preparatory work such as choosing an agent, a solicitor and arranging a mortgage. Guidance says physically distanced viewings that comply with public health advice are allowed. However, viewings should only take place with serious buyers who are genuinely interested in the property and initial viewings should be done online as virtual viewings where possible.

Removal firms are now able to operate, but guidance has been issued by the Government to ensure moves happen as safely as possible. If you’ve already exchanged contracts, you can progress to completion. Once the contracts are signed and exchanged you’ve entered into the legal agreement. All parties are encouraged to remain flexible during this period and be prepared for delays, for example if someone becomes ill with the virus. It’s advisable to make sure your legal representative provides explicit provisions for the risks presented by the virus and have a contract that stipulates sufficient flexibility to allow a purchase to be delayed in this event. Jarna is an experienced property lawyer and practices all residential conveyancing areas such as freehold and leasehold properties. Jarna can be contacted on 01902 392481 or Jarna.Rahman@fbcmb.co.uk

Our clients are telling us that they are ensuring people wash their hands when entering homes for a viewing and trying to limit visitors touching door handles, bannisters or opening cupboards! Here at FBC Manby Bowdler, our offices are now open for face 114

varied and wide. As September approaches, our ambitions are undiminished, perhaps strengthened by the challenges that we have faced as a team.

Normality is something I think we are all craving at the moment. To those who have been personally affected by this global pandemic, I and all of us at Tettenhall College, send our warmest thoughts, sympathies and best wishes. Although Tettenhall College has remained open throughout the restrictions, we have now successfully welcomed back children in our nursery, reception, year one and year six classes. To see young learners eagerly and excitedly return to the welcoming care of their class teachers has been truly heartening and gives huge encouragement that we are on the steady approach back to a full school.

happily remain very busy and it is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to introduce Tettenhall College to new enquirers. So, what can we take from the last few, historic months? Fundamentally, every day that a child is not at school is a challenge for us as educators, for their parents and most especially for them. We have done all that we humanly can to bridge this gap. Our online learning programme has been more comprehensive and successful that I could have possibly hoped when the school closures were first announced. Yet Tettenhall is a community. A place where people, most especially children, are known as individuals, with talents

We will take great learnings from how our experience of technologybased teaching can support us in the future. Yet when our family of teachers and students are all reunited, I have great faith that the personal, personalised and personable approach that defines our school will have even more resonance than before. We will take time to ensure that our young learners can readjust to their classrooms and discuss all that they have experienced. 2020-21 will see Tettenhall College at its finest. Our stunning theatre will be full of music, drama and dance, our sports pitches will see competition and personal endeavour, our classrooms will see our teachers work with our students to achieve their very best results. This will all happen as we work together as a community. Please know that our community is an open and welcoming one. We warmly invite you to come and visit and perhaps consider joining this very special family.

www.tettenhallcollege.co.uk

Whilst day to day focus is centred around delivering the very highest levels of tailored learning via online methods, plus direct contact between tutors and students, we are eagerly planning for the 2020-21 academic year with innovation and development at its heart. The transition process for our new entrants is well underway and scholarships for our Sixth Form are now being finalised. Our admissions team 116

Wolverhampton’s best kept secret… Prep School Of The Year (Sunday Times) of seven, admits most pupils on a first-come, first-served basis which was another influential factor in the decision to name Newbridge the top Independent Preparatory School Of The year. Alastair McCall, Editor of Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide, said: “Newbridge is an educational gem, a precious find for the 150 children lucky enough to go there.

The Sunday Times Independent Preparatory School Of TheYear 2020. Newbridge Preparatory School was named The Sunday Times Independent Preparatory School Of The Year 2020 – an outstanding achievement for any school – but for a small, nonselective school in Wolverhampton this is remarkable! How lovely that Wolverhampton is placed so highly on the UK’s Educational map. National League Tables The Sunday Times Parent Power article releases the UK’s national league tables. The rankings make use of the most recent public examination results. For senior schools, they include A-level,

GCSE, while junior school rankings draw on SATs taken in Year Six. Newbridge’s performance in the league table bears out the holistic approach of the school; which has finished in the top 20 six times in the past eight years; since the school has been under the leadership of Headmistress Mrs Sarah Fisher. Results from the new Key Stage 2 SATs (standard assessment tests) last year have propelled it to second place this year, its highest ever ranking. Pupils attained a scaled score of 113 for reading (where 100 is the expected level of achievement by the age of 11). For grammar, punctuation and spelling the level was 116, and in maths it was 114. Independent Preparatory School Of The Year 2020 The top scoring schools across the country are reviewed by a panel at The Times. The review includes inspection reports, website and social media. They are looking at the education beyond the academic as that has already been proven by the league tables. The Editor of The Sunday Times selects the winner of the award. Newbridge, which is co-educational until the age

“It manages to pull off the notable feat of achieving outstanding academic results (bettered by just four schools in England across the state and independent sectors) alongside developing the wider interests of its pupils - or allowing the children to have time for a childhood, to use the words of its excellent Headmistress Sarah Fisher.” “The school may have non-selective entry but by the time the girls leave at 11 they are much in demand across the best state and independent schools in the West Midlands. If ever the quality of education on offer here was a “best kept secret”, this award should ensure that is not the case for very much longer.” What an honour for a small school based outside of London – putting Wolverhampton firmly on the educational map of the UK!

The Best Start in Life

by Sarah Morris, Headmistress, Birchfield School A prep school start remains an attractive proposition in laying strong foundations for future success, as is consistently the outcome of educational research. Pupils undertake a more personalised education journey, one in which their teachers get to know them well and, with smaller class sizes, have more time to encourage personal, social and academic development. This personalised and individual attention is one of the great standout features of Birchfield School. Ensuring that each child is understood and nurtured in their formative years delivers aspirational and confident young people at age 11 or 13. From that seminal first day in Reception the teaching staff take the time to find out what makes each child ‘tick’. No detail is missed in getting to understand a Birchfield pupil, and nurturing their development. Meeting

a Birchfield pupil will always leave an impression of social confidence, good manners and quiet accomplishment. Birchfield’s aim is to instil a love of learning and equip children with enquiring minds and healthy lifestyles. The Early Years programme has a particularly fine reputation and the Pre-Prep department is a dynamic and thriving learning environment, in which ‘opportunity’ is the watchword. Pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 benefit from the fine

facilities the prep school has to offer, from twenty acres of glorious grounds to a woodland Forest School with an on-site room for outdoor learning and development. A varied programme of extra-curricular activities supports classroom learning and helps younger pupils develop their confidence and creativity. Helping pupils from the outset to discover their potential and unique talents is a key driver and pays dividends in producing young people that are in high demand from a wide range of senior schools.

Birchfield has spaces remaining for September 2020, so please get in touch and find out what this vibrant learning community can offer your child.

DOG

Days Out Travelling with your dog is a great bonding experience, but it takes a little forethought and planning to be stress-free.

happy, you won’t be either! Find a location where you are both welcome and remember that many coastal resorts don’t allow dogs on their beaches in high season.

Travelling in the car It’s a good idea to pack all your dog’s needs into a separate bag or rucksack so you have easy access to water, poop bags and car sickness

tablets where necessary. Don’t forget to take travel bowls and treats too, and a restraint if they travel inside the car rather than in the boot.

At your destination It’s a legal requirement for dogs to be micro chipped now, but it’s still advisable to keep your dog on a lead when you’re out and about in unfamiliar places, whether that’s a short lead or an extender that gives them a little more freedom. Taking your dog for days out this summer should be an enjoyable experience for all if you plan ahead and do your research. It’s a great opportunity to create some happy memories and make the most of the joy your dog brings to the family.

Here are three tips to make the trip a happy one.

Research where you’re going It’s a truth universally acknowledged…if your dog isn’t

we’re Proud TO HAVE DONE OUR BIT need to book MOT’s and other mechanical work in advance, rather than just dropping in. We are operating a drivein service for tyres, but only two customers can wait in reception at any one time. So, if you can, the best thing to do is drop your car off and collect it when it is ready.

HiQ Wolverhampton provided vital support for key workers at the height of the Covid-19 crisis.

For added protection, we’ve screened off our reception counter and made hand sanitiser freely available to all visitors. We’re also accepting contactless payments for purchases up to £45.

If in doubt, check it out.

Throughout the lockdown, our customers and suppliers were very supportive. If we haven’t had a chance to do so in person, we’d like to thank everyone for sticking by us.

Like everyone else, we heeded the government advice and stayed home during the recent health crisis. But we didn’t completely close our doors. Many key workers rely on their cars to get to work.

If your car was off the road during the lockdown, it makes sense to get it checked over, even if you’ve been driving it around for a few weeks. Inactivity can have a detrimental effect on tyres, batteries and vital fluids. Our health checks cover all the essentials - and they’re completely free.

Next time you visit our centre, you’ll find it’s pretty much business as usual, apart from a few small changes. To make sure everyone keeps a safe social distance, you’ll
