From the EDITOR

Even if summer isn’t your favourite season, you have to admit our UK front cover looks as gorgeous as any from abroad.  After the massive disappointment of 2020, the coming months at home offer us all so much.  From staycations at the seaside to socialising in the sunshine, your ticket to a fun-tastic summer begins right here with this bright and breezy edition of Wolverhampton West. So much in the UK is looking good right now: a great vaccine rollout, warm weather and the promise of a strong economic recovery. Understandably after so many lockdowns, ‘outside’ is the new ‘inside’ so check out what our advertisers have in store: from fancy flooring to fragrant flowers, lighting to loungers, we can help turn your garden into a glorious getaway. But don’t forget your home, we’ve got improvement advice in abundance. Try to forget overseas travel and Freedom Day for now and “go local” in a big way. Imagine vineyards and you think of France, but we think: newly-refurbished, Halfpenny Green Vineyards. Picture fine Italian food and you think of al fresco dining in a Renaissance piazza, whereas we think: Cataldo’s Italian bistro. A new sense of appreciation is upon us: this summer it’s goodbye to the irony-soaked stoicism of “ain’t life grand!” and hello to pantomime at The Grand. No more singing the blues, instead there’s Wolverhampton’s New Horizons Jazz festival to shout about. Now fortunes are looking up it’s time to roll the dice at Casino 36 or take a private carriage along the Severn Valley Railway: all aboard for good 06

times to come! And if I’m failing to paint a rosy enough picture then go straight to the experts at Angel Art Gallery in Broseley. As we all know, eating out was made a big fuss of last year, well, this year’s no different – also important is ‘shopping local’ – so be sure to look after the local businesses that looked after you.  But don’t forget staying in entirely because From Our Kitchen still make fine food. To borrow from Jerry Springer, make sure you look after yourself, and each other. This should be easier than ever thanks to this edition. Inside is a beautific beauty section – don’t miss the healthiest Health pages for some time, featuring opticians, dentists, physiotherapists and more. We’re also up to date with lots of local good causes too, from Paycare’s continued support of charities to Compton Care’s Memory Walk and from Rotary Wolverhampton’s life-saving work in India to our very own magazine distributors, Melvin and Heather Wood: this dynamic duo has, through Heather’s baking skills, raised money for a Motor Neurone Disease charity. Well done, folks - it’s good to see the “lockdown spirit” of doing for others is still alive and well. Physical fitness is now free from the constraints of our living rooms, so we’ve much about keeping fit at gyms and with personal trainers; and

there’s lots to share about sports too with a look at ladies golf, plus we make a racket about racquet sports. And our Education section is more fulsome than ever with loads of updates from many local schools. But taking you away from the spectre of the school holidays for a moment is our feature on Henns Jewellers’ 175 years in Wolverhampton. A family business to this day, the flagship store lends some much-needed glitz to our city. Another time-honoured member of Wolverhampton’s elite is Rudell, The Jewellers: stockists of nothing but the best of the best – see the Rolex on this magazine’s rear as proof of this. Like magpies, we all love a bit of sparkle at Wolverhampton West and, of course, never far away from all things that glitter is Royston Blythe hairdressers. Now back with a bang after a lockdown lull, read all about the social fireworks as Nick and Royston catch-up with us inside. It’s whiz-bang stuff, so blink and you’ll miss it. And since we’re all so used to this season coming and going in the blink of an eye, do be sure to get out there as often as possible and live it to the max.

property market What a manic market! Just when we think things are about to slow down we have another record-breaking month! Across the nation estate agents are experiencing huge levels of demand across all price ranges and the number of applicants registering on the mailing list is increasing on a daily basis!

But will it continue? The main part of the stamp duty holiday finishes at the end of this month, with the tapered relief finishing at the end of September. Whilst it is impossible to accurately predict what will happen in an increasingly unpredictable market, my belief is that we will see the frantic pace quieten. I see no reason why prices should soften, but I think that the time taken to find a buyer will lengthen slightly, as purchasers are no longer in such a mad panic to find somewhere before the stamp duty holiday ends. What will happen to the many sales that are in the pipeline but which are unlikely to go through before the stamp duty deadline? There was a fear that many sales would fall through but interesting research by

Rightmove – the leading property website – suggests otherwise. Of those who are expecting to make use of the stamp duty holiday, only 4% of the people questioned in a Rightmove survey said they would abandon their plans completely and stay put if they missed either the June or September deadline. Encouragingly, over half (53%) said they would go ahead as planned and only 13% said they would not go ahead with the current purchase and would try to find a cheaper property. Certainly, I am sure that conveyancing solicitors everywhere will be hoping that the market returns to a more normal pace as they are hugely pressurised with a staggeringly high workload at the moment. I have every sympathy with them and it is a credit to them that their professionalism remains superb, certainly with all of the solicitors that we have dealt with, and that they are coping admirably well under huge pressure. Our collective thanks go out from Berriman Eaton to every conveyancer that we have dealt with in recent months. I am delighted to see that our new Worcestershire office is going from strength to strength with some notable instructions and some good sales being agreed. I am, however, still envious of their office at Churchill and Blakedown Golf

Club – it is in a truly beautiful setting and a lovely place to meet clients! Last month I wrote that I was disappointed to discover that estate agents were one of the least trusted professionals in the UK. This month I have been surprised to discover that UK estate agency fees are amongst the lowest in the world. According to research by Get Agent we share the bottom of the league with Ireland, the Netherlands and South Korea. At the other end of the scale Australia heads the fee table with a typical fee of 5.7% of the sale price. Similar levels are charged in America whilst French and Spanish agents typically charge up to 5%! I am not suggesting that all UK estate agents should necessarily increase their commission levels, as I think we are paid well for what we do, but I do think it demonstrates that a good estate agent offers good value for money when compared to the global norm. Finally, I would like, once again, to thank all of the team at Berriman Eaton for working so incredibly hard in a frenetic market. We are still running at about twice the normal levels of instructions and sales agreed and it has not been easy. All of our team have risen to the challenge in an unusual environment and they all deserve praise for everything that they have done.

Planning W

an outdoor kitchen

e know the Australians have outdoor cooking down to a ‘T’, and in many parts of the USA garden kitchens are a popular feature, too. In the last few years, however, demand for al fresco kitchens in the UK has increased markedly. Despite our somewhat dodgy weather, it seems we’d all love to spend a little more time cooking, eating and socialising in the fresh air. So what are the key points to consider when planning an outdoor kitchen? BEFORE YOU START You shouldn’t need planning permission for an outdoor kitchen, as it’s not considered a permanent structure, but if you live in a listed building or a conservation area, it is worth checking with your local

14

By Katherine Sorrell

authority. Another point to bear in mind is that your neighbours may be affected – by smoke, for example, or additional lighting – and it’s never a bad idea to talk your plans through with them and avoid any potential future problems. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Where do you want to site your outdoor kitchen? You may already have a favourite spot in which to barbecue and eat, but if you’re starting from scratch there are a few major considerations. In a very large outdoor space, for example, you probably won’t want to stray too far from the house but, if you do, there will be a greater need for more facilities, such as a sink and tap, waste bin, storage

and cooling. If you are linking your outdoor kitchen to water and power, exactly how will they connect? Bear in mind that the further you go from the source the more expensive it will be to install them. Your kitchen needs to sit on level ground, safely far from flammable materials, and preferably in a spot that’s away from wind and not fully exposed to the sun. Avoid frequently used walkways, steps, trip hazards and slippery ground, too. Finally, allow enough floor area for all the different elements you wish to include, as well as space to walk around them and comfortably open any doors and drawers, plus seating/eating space nearby for the maximum number of guests you plan to entertain.

wolverhampton west magazine

A CHOICE OF FEATURES The simplest outdoor kitchen could just be a barbecue with a fold-out table or wheeled trolley next to it for food preparation – maybe with a rubbish bin beneath, some sturdy lidded boxes and a few hooks on the side for implements. You might add a rotisserie or a pizza oven, and perhaps a storage shelf or cupboard. At the other end of the spectrum the fanciest outdoor kitchens are carefully planned, built-in extravaganzas – not dissimilar from an indoor kitchen – and will include a plumbed-in sink and a fridge, as well as a spacious, durable and easily cleaned countertop – perhaps made of stone for a natural look, or stainless steel for a modern, streamlined effect. Go top-of-the-range and you could even include a dishwasher!

cooking will provide an element of warmth in itself, consider adding another form of heating near the dining area, such as a fire pit or an electric heater. It makes a nice focal point for gatherings, too. Lighting is an absolutely essential element, enabling you to safely continue cooking after dusk and adding ambience to the entertaining area. Design bright lighting near the barbecue, grill or oven, and decorative lighting near the dining table – perhaps rows of low-level lights or strings of pretty fairy lights.

FINISHING TOUCHES An outdoor kitchen can be a plain and simple, functional affair, but to make it more fun and personal, add some carefully designed, individual elements. How about patterned tiles on the wall behind the cooking area? A variety of cushions and throws on the seating? Colourful storage containers or textural floor tiles? Incorporate beautiful planting nearby – a herb garden would be handy – and you have the best of both worlds: a garden in which to relax and your own delightful outdoor eatery.

COMFORT AND WEATHER-PROOFING You may want to build your garden kitchen with some form of protection from rain showers – but do bear in mind that a grill needs to be properly ventilated if it’s sited under a permanent, solid cover. Roll-away awnings are a good solution for changeable British weather. Although the www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

ALL THE INGREDIENTS FOR AL FRESCO LIVING • If you’re planning on spending lots of time outdoors this summer, and keeping those sunny days going well into the evenings, think first of providing shady spots, and then of some form of warmth. Pile up blankets and throws, for sure, but consider a gas or electric heater or – more romantically – a fire pit. • To extend day into night you’ll need outdoor lighting: some functional, simply to see what you’re barbecuing or pouring into a glass, and some decorative, just to make the space look and feel gorgeous. It may be relatively easy to add a protected outdoor plug socket (ask a qualified electrician), and add a dramatic floor lamp or set of fairy lights. Alternatively, there’s a vast range of good-quality solar lights to choose from these days and, of course, candles and night lights look incredibly pretty, and can be protected from breezes with lanterns and jars.

This decorative textured rope light has a warm white solar bulb with an amber filament. After charging during daylight hours, it works for up to eight hours at a time. LED solar garden light, £65, Ella James.

Made from recycled plastic bottles, this rug can withstand moisture, mildew, mould and UV light. Its design is reversible: simply flip over for a new look. Fab Hab Tokyo outdoor rug in burnt orange, £59.95, Cuckooland.

This tiled table contains its own fire pit (or ice bowl) and is surrounded by four low-level dining chairs with weather-resistant cushions. Ava four-seater tile firepit outdoor living set, £899, Dobbies.

• Seating is all-important, whether it’s upright seats and a table for dining, bar sets for informal drinks with friends or sofas and squashy chairs for lounging. These days, outdoor furniture – using modern fabric technology – can look just like your upholstered living room furniture, but of course there are always the classics of outdoor rattan, wood and metal. Look for versatile furnishings such as rise-and-fall tables that take you from coffee to dining, or pieces that are grouped around their own fire table. And if space and budget allow, have fun by adding cocoons, hammocks and swing seats as occasional spots for complete relaxation. • Finishing touches pull the whole indoor/outdoor look together, from patterned outdoor rugs to piles of cushions, plus quirky outdoor eating sets and colourful glassware. With imagination and flair you can have great fun setting up a welcoming garden ‘room’, a truly special place to spend the days – and nights… wolverhampton west magazine

Wolverhampton West

41 CLUB

By Nick Berriman

It has been a very long time since I have written anything for this magazine with regards to Wolverhampton West 41 Club but, like so many, many other things in this world, Covid stopped play! The club has not been able to meet in our normal fashion for well over a year due to all of the lockdown restrictions that were in place. From meeting at least once a month to not seeing each other for many months was obviously a shock to the system, but clearly we were all going to follow the rules! We were, at least, able to meet up during the Christmas holidays when the lockdown restrictions were temporarily lifted and we undertook our normal Sleigh

collection in December with our now traditional visit of Santa and his sleigh to Codsall, Pattingham and Perton. We were delighted to raise well over £4,000 for worthwhile causes within the area. However, our charitable work did not cease entirely during lockdown and we continued to look for charitable causes to support. So what did we do? Obviously, we bought a double decker bus! Over the Easter break Wolverhampton West 41 Club purchased and began the conversion of a double decker bus into a library and quiet reading area for the pupils of Perton Primary Academy. Over the coming months we will be working closely with the Academy to fully convert the bus and hope the pupils

will enjoy, and take full benefit from, their new library. The Chair of the Governors and the Executive Head, Lynn Small, are delighted with the support we are providing and are really looking forward to working with the club further on this project. I am delighted to say that, finally, we were able to meet up again on a more social basis in June for a BBQ and Clay Pigeon Shoot at a farm in Trysull. The club members that were able to attend enjoyed an evening of great hospitality, courtesy of our host Ed Bolland, with an evening of shooting, drinking, eating and talking late into the evening around a specially constructed fire pit. Many plans were made for future exploits and fundraising endeavours and I look forward to keeping you up to speed with our activities and charitable work in the months to come – Covid allowing, of course!

Wolverhampton West 41 Club, which was only established in 2019, as a follow on Club from Wolverhampton Round Table 17, has grown its membership - even in these difficult times. Having raised considerable funds to date it has already identified further local charities, organisations and individuals to support with donations in 2021. You don’t need to move house to get the extra space you need

W

ith the experience of lockdown and more time than ever spent at home, you may be reevaluating your housing needs. Of course, being at home with your family on a more regular basis may well have made you realise you need more space. Or you may be having to work from home more and you need additional space to cater for a new daily routine. With the country, and the UK economy, slowly coming out of lockdown, it’s no surprise that any thoughts of moving house will be off the agenda, particularly with the stamp duty holiday ending. But the good news is, you don’t have to move to get the extra space you need. A modern conservatory offers the perfect alternative to upping sticks and can serve a variety of purposes, which is why an increasing number of homeowners are deciding to invest in their existing home rather than climb the property ladder. Conservatory fashion has changed from the traditional white plastic, u-PVC structure with polycarbonate roof to the single-story extension, often specified with higher specification products

such as wide span bi-fold doors, for a more luxurious, contemporary space. A combination of cuttingedge materials and building techniques also means that, unlike the old models, new conservatories are warm in the winter and cool in the

summer, meaning they can be used as an all-year-round living space for decades to come. It’s no wonder that the conservatory is becoming an integral part of the home again. Wolverhampton Glass installs bespoke new build conservatories with a state-ofthe-art modular conservatory base and wall system that’s not only efficient and attractive, but it’s also a lot quicker and easier to install too. A conservatory can be designed to complement both your home’s current floorplan and living requirements, with different materials and roof options to choose from.

Generally, you don’t need planning permission for a conservatory as it is categorised under ‘permitted development rights,’ meaning you don’t have to worry about any possible red tape. And if you think you will be contemplating a move later down the line, a conservatory is a great way of increasing the value of your home. So, whether you’re after a designated children’s playroom, a bigger lounge to spend time with family in; a space to work in, or a link to your garden or the outdoors for the summer, a conservatory ticks all the boxes – and can really help you reinvent the way you use your home. With over 45 years of industry experience, and more than 25,000 completed projects across the Midlands, you can trust that your home is in good hands with Wolverhampton Glass. Wolverhampton Glass is also part of Sustainium Group, a consortium of world-class home improvement companies that believe homeowners deserve innovative, quality products and wonderful customer experience – all provided in an ethical and sustainable way.

Create Great Storage

in your Bathroom By Katherine Sorrell

F

ind a place for everything and make your bathroom both tidy and beautiful.

The terrazzo look is all the rage, and small pieces such as this concrete tumbler can really add character. Speckled concrete tumbler, £10, House of Flora.

Match pretty storage pots to toothbrush holders and soap dispensers for a co-ordinated look. Dorma porcelain lotion dispenser, £12; tumbler, £10; small storage trinket, £10; and soap dish, £8, all Dunelm.

A Place for everything

Tall and slim, a bathroom caddy is essential when you need to fit a lot of storage into a small space. Maxine mango wood bathroom caddy, £85, Made.

A mirror can also function as a useful small shelf. Metal mirror with shelf, £99, Salt and Steel.

Clear jars are useful for identifying what’s inside. These are made from glass, with bamboo lids. Audley storage jars, £8 and £10, Garden Trading.

30

• Bathrooms look their best – and function most efficiently – when clutter is kept out of sight. If you don’t already have a vanity cupboard below your basin, you’ll have to think creatively. Can you mount a slim cupboard on the wall somewhere? If it has mirrored doors, then above the basin works perfectly. Inside, adjustable shelving is useful, and it may even be handy to add a hook or two on one or both sides. If you have young children and plan to keep medicines inside, it is best to add a lock. • Other options for walls – ideal for items you’re happy to have out on display – include shelves, racks, hooks and peg rails – all useful options depending on what you need to store. You could also add a rack to the back of the door, where its contents will be a little more hidden away. • When space is tight, think tall and slender. Ladder shelves, caddies (perhaps on wheels) and tallboy cupboards can be squeezed into small spaces and will hold a surprisingly large amount of bathroom kit. For very small items, use baskets or small acrylic boxes to subdivide the storage conveniently. • Bathrooms tend to be full of glossy white sanitaryware, so variations of colour and texture can be very welcome. It’s easy to add these in the form of small storage items – woven baskets, terrazzo pots, glass tumblers, wooden boxes and so on – which can be replaced quite cheaply when you feel like a change. wolverhampton west magazine

KITCHEN ISLAND LIGHTING IDEAS Kitchen island lights are one of the best lighting fixtures you can use in a kitchen. They also look fantastic if you have a large kitchen island or bar area. Island lighting creates a statement piece and provides additional brightness to your space.

How to Choose Kitchen Island Lighting You have a lot of options when it comes to kitchen island lighting fixtures. Whether you are looking for pendants, cluster pendants or bar pendant ceiling lights there are tons of options. We provide helpful tips below for choosing the best kitchen island light for your home.

Pendant Lights Depending on the size of your kitchen island or bar, you can choose to have 2 large pendants positioned equally

Dar Lighting – Soho Pendant

over the island creating a dramatic effect or you can opt for 3 smaller pendants and position them equally as well. These 2 options are a very popular choice when it comes to choosing kitchen island lighting.

Cluster Pendants Lights Now if you don’t have a large kitchen island or simply want to have a nice feature over your dining table then cluster pendant lights are a perfect choice. The cluster of lights can hang above your table about 28-32 inches or slightly higher or lower depending on the ceiling height.

Bar Pendant Lights If your space appears to be in rectangular designs, you might consider a bar pendant light, this choice is a combination that features 3 or 4 lights in one fixture that provides sufficient brightness and a statement piece to your room.

Wolverhampton Grand Theatre It seems almost inconceivable that it has been over a year since our beloved Grand Theatre played to a live audience. We are sure that all our Wolverhampton West magazine readers have missed the theatregoing experience as much as we have, from the initial excitement of booking a ticket to a new or favourite show through to that magical moment when the lights dim and the curtain rises, and we’re taken on a rollercoaster ride of entertainment and emotion. There really is nothing like it! Theatregoers are vital to the success of any theatre and we would encourage you to return to the Grand and rekindle your passion for live theatre. Of course, the best way to visit the Grand is as a Friend of the Grand. Not only do you enjoy the benefits of membership, including generous Friends only ticket discounts and priority booking, your membership fee is also reinvested into the theatre, providing valuable financial support at this time, helping to ensure the Grand comes back stronger than ever and ensuring the presence of quality theatre in Wolverhampton.

So, what difference does membership make to you as well as the local community? Well, apart from supporting the theatre itself you receive so many opportunities to meet fellow members at specially organised Friends-only events. Many friendships have been forged down the years which adds extra richness to membership. The Friends scheme supports the annual ‘Intro to Panto’ tour at local schools. Our outreach department bring the joy of panto into the school environment, with the aim of teaching youngsters about the history of pantomime and creating a love for theatre from a young age. The scheme also proudly supports the theatre’s Memory Café events for those people living with, or caring for those with, dementia. The café provides an opportunity to meet, talk and even make friends with people in a similar situation and has proved to be a lifeline for many of those who attend this free monthly event.

HOT OFF THE PRESS We would like to share with you some exciting news regarding this year’s pantomime. Brothers AJ and Curtis Pritchard will star in the spectacular CINDERELLA from Saturday 4 December 2021 – Sunday 9 January 2022. Tickets are on sale now. 38

Fresh from the I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! castle, AJ is now the prince of a much more glamourous one, taking on the role of Prince Charming. The Strictly Come Dancing professional joined the hit BBC show in 2016 and was a firm favourite for the four seasons in which he appeared. Since then, AJ has made numerous TV and theatre appearances, often alongside his brother who will be right alongside him this Christmas as the Prince’s right-hand man. Curtis will play Dandini, allowing plenty of opportunity for mischief and identity-swapping as he helps the Prince and Cinderella to find love… something that Curtis knows all too well having won the hearts of the nation in the 2019 series of Love Island. Curtis appeared as a professional dancer on Ireland’s version of Strictly, Dancing With The Stars. His other TV appearances include The Greatest Dancer, Celebs Go Dating: The Mansion and together with AJ they appeared as guest choreographers for the season one finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. The pantomime, which was previously planned for 2020, had to be postponed until this year due to the national closure of all theatres. CINDERELLA will be produced by Imagine Theatre, in partnership with Wolverhampton Grand. The headline sponsor for CINDERELLA will be Dudley Zoo & Castle. We hope you will come along for what we believe will be a fantastic family event. The best way to book tickets is via the following link or by phoning the box office on 01902 429212. www.grandtheatre.co.uk/whats-on/cinderella/#book We’ll both be back over the coming months regarding other major announcements as we all return to live theatre world… Oh yes we will!

Thank you so much for all your support.

Motor Neurone Disease Fundraiser Heather and Melvin Between the two lockdowns of 2020 Melvin and I went for a drink with friends. We noticed that one of them was having difficulty speaking clearly, after months of concern Roz was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). A lot has been in

Cream Tea

celebration cakes and sweet treats. Many of the orders have come through word of mouth and facebook, I jokingly refer to myself as ‘MERRIBAKES’ as I am based in Merridale.

This is obviously an ongoing challenge as a lot of preserves are reliant on the seasonal fruit and vegetables. I do hope to have achieved my 100 jars by the end of November because December gets busy with the Christmas baking.

Cake in a Jar

Mallow Truffle Slabs

the news over the last couple of years about famous sportsmen who have MND and the fundraising challenges that their friends have undertaken. As I can’t run, swim or cycle any great distance, I decided that as my happy place is my kitchen, I would use my preserving and baking skills to fundraise for MND. At the beginning of April, I set myself the challenge to make 100 jars of preserves. So far, I have made 56 jars, which include: Blackberry Jam (fruit from our garden) Orange, Lemon and Lime marmalade, Cucumber and Red Pepper pickle, Pickled Mushrooms and Pickled Red Cabbage. I have also made a variety of

Christmas Cakes 44

It has to be said that none of what I do would be possible without the support of Melvin, who puts up with the incredible mess I make in the kitchen, and more often than not is clearing up after me!!! There is another challenge I will undertake on a nice warm day, #IceFoot92. This has been set up by former professional footballer Len Johnroses, the ‘92’ is related to the number of football clubs in the top four divisions in England. Information for the Ice Bucket Challenge can be found at www.mndassociation.org/icefoot92 I will hopefully have raised about £500 by the time I have completed my challenges, not a huge amount, however, as they say, every little helps and people suffering with MND definitely need our help to try and find some effective treatments.

MEET OUR TRUSTED TEAM lovely to arrive home to a house that is not just clean, but beautifully presented every visit!” Says Senior Team Leader, Alice: “All our teams work really hard to get things right for our clients, and they value what we do, but they also know they can trust us, because of the training and systems we have in place.”

L-R: Carly, Alice and Kelly

At Bright and Beautiful Wolverhampton, we understand that deciding you need help around the home is just one step in the process. You need the support in your busy life, but then actually having people in your house to deliver the service can feel like a real leap of faith. They seem nice, but can you trust them in your most precious space – your home? That’s why as well as using Pure Products, and offering a Holistic Housekeeping Service, the two other mainstays of our business are Trusted Team and Strict Security. “For our clients, security is far and away the most important part of our service.” says company director, Charmaine Nicolson. “As a company, as well as delivering a bespoke service for each of our clients, we have already addressed the issues that are important

to them. Every one of our team is criminal record checked; we work in teams of 2, or 3, because actually that offers even more peace of mind. Every one of our housekeepers are trained in security and we have strict procedures in place, from how we look after keys and alarm codes, to ensuring homes are left safe and secure. All our staff have confidentiality clauses in their contracts, too. As well as being professionally trained in housekeeping, every member of our staff are taught our policies on client privacy and have to adhere to these.” “We are very proud of all our team, who are managed in client’s homes by our experienced Team Leaders, Carly, Alice and Kelly. These ladies have excelled in looking after our clients and manage the day-to-day cleaning of all homes, to ensure each individual client action plan is followed, quality checked at the end of each visit, and of course, to ensure all homes are left secure. This also means added convenience for our clients, because they do not need to be home when we visit. And it is so

Kelly has worked for Bright and Beautiful Wolverhampton for 2 years and was recently promoted to Team Leader. “We love the Wow! clients feel when we have performed their initial deep clean. And it’s an honour to be trusted to be in their homes. We have excellent training, take great pride in our work, and it’s so lovely to be able to help people get some precious time back.” For cleaning, tidying, ironing/ laundry services, for regular visits and also one-off deep cleans, get in touch.

Woodland holidays in the UK Whether you’re looking for a secluded escape or an adrenaline-fuelled adventure, reconnect with Mother Nature with a visit to one of the UK’s most enchanting forests.

50

Dean’s history stretches back to medieval times, when it was used as a royal hunting forest. Today, a landscape of woodlands, rivers, hills and valleys make it an adventurer’s playground. Recharge your batteries from a remote forest cabin before taking a high ropes course in the treetops or exploring the underground mine workings of Clearwell Caves. The area is also home to one of the best rivers in the country for canoeing and kayaking – the River Wye. Paddle down the river solo or join a relaxing boat cruise, learning about the landscape as you go.

If there’s one thing the UK has no shortage of, it’s unspoilt woodland. Our forests are brimming with beauty and wildlife, making them perfect for nature watching, walking and mountain biking – or for just finding some peace and quiet. With so much of our country carpeted in thick woodland, you’ll be spoilt for choice on where to go. To get your imagination ticking, here are just three of the UK’s most impressive forests – and what to do while you’re there.

Spend a long weekend in a thatched cottage, gaze up at giant sequoias, cycle through quaint villages, and meet the native ponies. Families flock to the ‘Peppa Pig’ themed Paultons Park, while Longdown Activity Farm and the New Forest Wildlife Park are a popular spot for animal lovers. The New Forest is also conveniently close to the UK’s glorious south coast. Watch the boats come and go from the harbour town of Lymington, or walk along the beach to Hurst Castle from Milford-on-Sea.

The New Forest, Hampshire

The Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire

With historical roots reaching as far back as 1079, the New Forest is far from new. Once a royal hunting preserve, it’s now one of the UK’s most visited national parks, spanning 140 miles of woodland, heathland and river valleys.

Step inside JRR Tolkien and JK Rowling’s magical worlds with a trip to Gloucestershire’s Forest of Dean. Its mysterious depths supposedly inspired Middle Earth, and key scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows were also filmed here.

Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire It’s hard to ignore Robin Hood when you’re in Sherwood Forest, with countless pubs, lodges and even a festival named after him. But the forest is much more than an ancient stomping ground for its most famous hero. Many visit to see the gigantic oak trees, namely The Major Oak, which is believed to be 1,100 years old and the biggest in Britain! Explore the hundreds of acres of ancient woodland here on foot or by bike, ticking off the Robin Hood statues along the way. Its history as a royal hunting forest means it’s also dotted with grand ducal estates, many of which are open to the public. You could even time your visit around the annual Robin Hood festival, held in the forest every summer. Storytelling, sword fighting, dancing, and food, drink and craft stalls come together to create a fun atmosphere for all ages. Photo courtesy of CC BY 2.0, Royal Oak, John W. Schulze

Summer Gardening

W

ith the sunny days of July and August on their way, there’s nothing better than adding some extra colour to the garden.

There’s still time to plant larger pots of Geraniums, Fuchsias, Cosmos and Dahlias to fill in any gaps in borders. Water to get established and feed on a weekly basis. Dead head regularly and you’ll have colour through to the first autumn frosts, which hopefully will be late starting. Hanging baskets are still available and will continue to flower right through to the autumn with some care and attention – water daily, feed weekly and remove finished flowers regularly to encourage plants to produce more flowers. Keep sowing or planting salad crops such as lettuce, spinach, spring onions and radish in the veg patch to get a continuous harvest. Use very fine netting to cover cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots and other particularly susceptible vegetables against flies, pigeons and butterflies. Harvest peas and runner beans regularly whilst they are young and tender,

Tips are provided by Ann Winwood, Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton

freeze any spares for home grown vegetables during the winter months. Keep beans and peas moist and spray over the foliage to encourage pods to set. There’s plenty of choice in the herbaceous sections at the moment as well as the ever popular Lupins – especially the newer West Country Range, there’s the Salvias, with a whole host of new varieties available, Delphiniums and the butterfly loving Verbena bonanariensis and the ever popular perennial Geraniums. Hosta’s are good for a shady spot with their coloured foliage, watch out for the slugs though, especially if the ground is damp. Now is a good time to add new plants to your pond. There’s a good selection of marginal and deep-water plants available. Keep marginals on a ledge at the edges of the pool and not too deep – Iris, Caltha, Primulas and Bulrushes are all good examples. For the middle/deeper parts of the pool water lilies are good and can give good protection for any fish you have in the pool. Most plants come ready planted in aquatic pots so just need placing into the pool. Don’t forget marginals need not be planted in the pool – if you have a damp, boggy area plants like Iris, Primulas and Lobelias will all grow happily. For new potatoes in October, or at Christmas, plant seed potatoes in tubs in July and August. Growth will finish in October, leave the tubers in their pots until required for cooking. Remember they’ll need frost protection once the winter frosts appear in November and December. To complete another gardening cycle or start a new one depending on how you look at it, the spring flowering bulbs will be appearing in Garden Centres from the end of August! If you want Hyacinths in flower for Christmas, they must be planted and put into a dark cool place in September. Most varieties require an 8-10-week cool period followed by 2-3 weeks of warmer conditions to bring them into flower. Use a compost specifically for bulbs as it will contain charcoal to keep the soil sweet.

Has your garden become your haven…

or maybe you would like to make it one? The uncertainty of the last 12 months has made everyone appreciate their outdoor space a whole lot more, whether it’s tending to pots in a pretty courtyard or the huge task of cultivating a large lawn. Perhaps your garden is a project in hand and on your ‘to do’ list for this summer… a staycation is always an option these days ! Whether you are in need of a complete renovation or simply want to update what you already have, there are plenty of options available down at your local builders merchants. Creating an outdoor space you look forward to using and most

importantly, a garden that works for you all year round, can be a challenge. With an endless list of possibilities, it can be hard knowing where to start. Sometimes it can be almost impossible to imagine your ideal space, when you have a blank canvas in front of you. With this in mind, it’s a great idea to pay a visit to a local landscaping centre, where you can see all the products on display. Carvers Building Supplies have a huge landscaping display, showcasing a large selection of products, so you can get a clear idea of how they would look in your own garden.

From natural stone paving, block paving, garden walling, fencing, edging, decking, decorative stone and accessories, along with many other feature products. Whether you’re creating a space to wine, dine and entertain in the summer (covid permitting!) or you’re undertaking a landscaping project (big or small), you’ll find everything you need to make your outdoor project a success. Carvers have landscaping experts on hand to advise right through the decision-making process, offering ideas (and advice) to help you make up your mind. Carvers are open to trade and retail customers, Monday to Friday 7.00am – 4.30pm and from 7.30am on Saturdays. They also have extensive retail, bathroom and cooker centre showrooms, along with Café 1896, should you wish to stop for a coffee break!

Rotary Club of The City of Wolverhampton

Fighting Covid across the Continents

Officials, Medics and Rotarians greet the Concentrator on arrival at Changancherry Hospital.

The Covid 19 crisis in India has become a major catastrophe. In March the Indian Health Minister had declared that India was in “the end game” of the epidemic, as the Government gave the impression that Covid 19 was defeated. Religious festivals were allowed to go ahead, along with political rallies, with little regard to measures to mitigate Covid. This impacted upon attitudes to, and defences against, Covid and the vaccination programme was totally ineffective. In April the Government’s Covid-19 Task-force met for the first time in months Then came a new variant of Covid, the Delta variant, and a third wave hit at a time when only 2% of the population had been vaccinated. By May 28th there had been 27.7 million recorded cases with 323,000 deaths. In the State of Kerala alone, the figures are 2.7 million cases with 8,257 deaths. The true figures are probably even higher as many cases go unrecorded. The City of Wolverhampton Rotary Club decided it would prefer to take direct, rapid action, rather than simply donate to one of the many commendable relief funds that have been set up. The Rotary network of directly contactable Rotarians includes Scaria Jose of the Rotary Club of Changanacherry, Kerala, who serves as the 60

Rotary Jaipur Limb (RJL) Ambassador to India. This created a link to City Club member, Richard Green who is also an RJL Trustee and its Director for India. Scaria advised that there is a desperate need for oxygen concentrators – machines designed to provide relief to patients with severe breathing difficulties associated with Covid. By contacting fellow Rotarian Binoop Paul, Scaria established that a concentrator, manufactured in China, could be purchased for £728. The funds were rapidly dispatched to the supplier, Binoop’s employers, N2 Healthcare in Cochin to enable an order to be placed The unit arrived in Mumbai on May 26th, was transported across country to Cochin and delivered to Scaria Jose the next day. It was handed over to the public hospital in Changanacherry on May 28th, where it was accepted by the hospital superintendent, in the presence of the local member of the State Legislative Assembly, Job Michael, and other Rotarians from the Changanacherry club. Job Michael has expressed his heartfelt thanks to all the Rotarians involved in extending help to the needy patients during what he described as the current calamity. A number of other Rotary Clubs have subsequently followed this route, directly funding the purchase of other equipment desperately needed in the fight to overcome the crisis. wolverhampton west magazine

SHARRATTS SOLICITORS FAMILY LAW UPDATE

Jane Swancott (Managing Director)

What a year we have all had, every person across the globe has been impacted by Covid 19 and the effects have been felt in a variety of different ways.

Each and every family unit will have endured its own challenges and the fallout from the pandemic is likely to continue for many months to come. We can offer help and guidance to families across the region or signpost to other services where necessary. One of the most reported features within the pandemic is the rise in pressures upon families who have been confined for months together in isolation from the outside world. Domestic abuse can often be happening behind closed doors without family or friends realising. Domestic abuse is not always visible as it is not restricted to physical assaults and even where it is physical it is not always the face that is targeted as the perpetrator of the abuse knows that facial markings will alert others to the abuse. Those affected by domestic abuse often feel helpless and alone and the pandemic can only have made this more frightening and overwhelming. Alarmingly, there are a reported 2.3million incidents of domestic abuse (for those aged between 16-74) every year in the UK. This alarmingly high statistic highlights the need for a change and thankfully change is coming with the Domestic Abuse Act receiving Royal assent on the 29th April 2021.

The Domestic Abuse Act 2021 will bring about the following changes: • A new definition of domestic abuse, which not only includes physical abuse but also emotional, controlling, coercive and economic abuse. • The offence of controlling and coercive behaviour has been extended to include abuse after a couple has separated. • It prevents perpetrators from cross-examining their victims in court and creates a presumption that domestic abuse victims require special measures in court to prevent further intimidation by their perpetrator (protective screens and the option to give evidence via video link). • It is an offence to threaten to disclose private and intimate images to distress victims. • Individuals are not allowed to consent to the infliction of serious harm, which means that an individual is unable to consent to their own death by the hands of their partner. • A new offence of non-fatal strangulation or suffocation has been created. • Local authorities have a duty to help domestic abuse victims and their children find shelter in refuges and other safe accommodation. • Those victims who are homeless will have ‘priority need’ for homelessness assistance. • GPs and other health care professionals will no longer be able to charge domestic abuse victims for letters in support of their Legal Aid application. • Perpetrators will have to participate in rehabilitative programmes to prevent them from carrying out future abuse. • Children will be deemed as victims of domestic abuse if they have witnessed, heard, or experienced domestic abuse. • The police can issue Domestic Abuse Protection Notices/Orders to provide victims with immediate protection. These measures are flexible and can involve excluding the perpetrator from a property for a specified period. • There will be a statutory basis for Claire’s Law (Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme), which gives a person the right to ask the police if their partner might pose a threat to them.

These are all welcome changes and if anyone is suffering in silence please make contact and we can signpost to refuges in the area with whom we work closely and we can ensure that appropriate steps are taken to keep you (and where needed, your family) safe.

Little changes… making huge impacts We’re all guilty of saying that we’re going to do more of something… and then not doing it. Reducing our plastic wastage is probably right up there on most of our lists. But what if we all pulled together to really achieve it? This is the exact question Angie asked when she founded EcoWulf in August 2019. A mini-market in the heart of Wolverhampton, the mission was simple: no more plastic. And in just under two years, this little change has amounted to a huge achievement, as Angie tells us: “Our wonderful community in Wolverhampton have saved a minimum of 9300 plastic bottles from the waste stream. The aim is 10,000 for our second birthday in August, which we are on track for!”

Angie, owner of EcoWulf

Rapidly expanding its range by the day, EcoWulf offers plastic free alternatives to our daily products: from toothbrushes and toiletries to soaps and coffee cups. With everything located in one bubbly place, being eco-friendly suddenly doesn’t seem too much of a hassle. And what about those products that always come unnecessarily bandaged up in plastic packaging? The solution is straightforward: refillables!

68

Whether it’s pasta, shampoo, laundry detergent, coffee, frozen veg or even ketchup, EcoWulf most likely supplies it. Just bring in a suitable, volume marked bottle or container and refill with whatever you need, whenever you need it. With this comes increased control, so if you only need a small amount of product, you’re not having to splash money on huge multipacks that you don’t need and will only result in further waste. “Everyone is invited” explains Angie, “this is about more than saving plastic wastage, it’s about uniting everyone in one shared mission, regardless of background or views. “In a world that’s becoming increasingly technological and isolating, EcoWulf offers a warm, vibrant and personal experience of shopping that we’re all yearning for.” Why not join the community and help us exceed our 10,000 plastic bottle goal! No number is too great when everyone takes one small step to achieve it. Support your local businesses today and visit EcoWulf.

SESAME CHICKEN AND CRUNCHY VEG STIR FRY

STIR-FRIES ARE A GREAT WAY TO USE UP ANY LEFT OVER VEGGIES IN THE FRIDGE. THIS ONE HAS ADDED CRUNCH WITH RED CABBAGE AND A NUTTY SPRINKLING OF SESAME SEEDS.

Serves: 4

Ready in: 20 minutes

Ingredients 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tsp grated root ginger 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 1 onion, peeled and thinly sliced 350g chicken breast fillet, cut into thin strips 2 large carrots, peeled and coarsely grated 225g broccoli florets, blanched (see Tip) 2 tbsp light soy sauce 1 tbsp runny honey 300g pack fresh noodles 1 tsp sesame oil 1 tbsp sesame seeds ¼ of a red cabbage, finely shredded and blanched (see Tip) Lime wedges, to serve

Method Heat the vegetable oil in a large wok or non-stick frying pan over a high heat until until almost smoking. Add the ginger and garlic and stir-fry for 30 seconds then add the onion and chicken and stir-fry for a further 2-3 minutes until the onion is tender and the chicken is almost cooked through. Add the grated carrot and broccoli and stir-fry for another minute then stir in the soy sauce, honey and noodles with 1-2 tbsp hot water. Stir fry for a further 1-2 minutes until the noodles are piping hot. Stir in the sesame oil and half the sesame seeds. Divide the stir-fry between four warmed serving dishes and top with the rest of the sesame seeds and the shredded red cabbage. Serve immediately with lime wedges.

TIP:

Blanching the broccoli and red cabbage will just soften them slightly. Plunge into a pan of boiling water for 1 minute then drain and refresh under cold water. 76

RICOTTA STUFFED PORK

Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 hour This is a great way to jazz up pork steaks for a midweek meal. Serve with brown rice or creamy mashed potatoes on the side, if preferred.

Ingredients

Method

4 thin-cut pork loin steaks

Place the pork steaks between two sheets of cling film or greaseproof paper and bash with a rolling pin until very thin.

175g ricotta cheese 2 tbsp fresh chopped basil 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest

In a small bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with the chopped basil and lemon zest and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Place a spoonful of the cheese mixture at the base of each piece of pork then carefully roll up to enclose the stuffing and secure each with a wooden cocktail stick.

1 tbsp olive oil

Heat the oil and butter in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the pork rolls for 4-5 minutes, turning once until browned all over. Pour in the stock and sherry or apple juice and simmer for 20-25 minutes until cooked through. Remove the pork rolls and keep warm. Add the green beans to the frying pan and cook for 5-6 minutes until just tender.

15g butter 450ml meat or vegetable stock 4 tbsp dry sherry or apple juice 175g green beans, trimmed 2 tbsp pine nuts, toasted

Sport y

f e e t

At Foot Therapy, we are here to help. We get many sports people walk through our clinic, from golfers to long distance runners, all wanting to look after their feet.

TOP TIPS to keep your toes in TIP TOP Condition • Make sure you get the correct fitting footwear for your sport and are able to wiggle your toes. This will test whether or not they are too small for you • When cutting your nails, make sure you follow the natural shape of your nail. This will avoid getting any ingrowing toenails. • Make sure you change your socks after doing your sport. This will avoid getting fungal infections such as athlete’s foot. TIP of the month: This month’s tip is called the ‘finger method’. This is to test whether or not the nails are cut correctly, because it is very important to ensure that: your nails are cut short, but not too short. To know that they have been cut correctly, use your finger and place this vertically against your toenail. Apply slight pressure to your finger. Your nail and the skin underneath should be level. ROTATOR CUFFS WITH MR RHEE Mr Jae Rhee is an Upper Limb Orthopaedic Consultant based at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, whilst offering a private service at the Nuffield Health hospital in Tettenhall. He is an Honorary Lecturer at the Institute of Sports Exercise and Health at University College London, as well as being a team doctor to London Saracens RFC. He works in close collaboration with the Lilleshall International Sports Centre, home to the English Institute of Sports, as well as treating elite sports people from the English Ice Hockey Association and PGA European Golf Tour. Mr Rhee has particular interests in arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, shoulder joint replacement surgery and sports related injuries to the shoulder, wrist and hand, including novel techniques in rotator cuff injuries and arthroscopic surgery for acromio-clavicular injuries. It’s the Rotator Cuff that Mr Rhee wanted to share an insight into in this section. What is the Rotator Cuff? The rotator cuff is a very important group of tendons, made up of four muscles, that covers the shoulder ball-socket joint. These four muscles work together to provide the wide range of movement that we often take for granted in our shoulder joint. Another important function of the rotator cuff is that it provides stability in our shoulder. It does this by keeping the ball within the socket of the shoulder joint throughout the entire range of movement. How do I know if I have damaged my Rotator Cuff? Following injury to your rotator cuff, you will experience pain in the top and side (deltoid region) of your shoulder. The pain that you experience can become worse over time. It is often made worse with activity, particularly ‘above head’ or ‘hands behind the back’ movements. Other common symptoms following

injury include weakness when lifting and pain when lying on the affected shoulder. Is my Rotator Cuff torn or strained? Unfortunately, rotator cuff strains and tears present very similarly. If you have sustained an acute trauma to your shoulder, you can have either a strain or tear. Both conditions will cause shoulder pain and symptoms described above. If you have developed any of the aforementioned symptoms, it is advisable that you consult your shoulder surgeon, who will thoroughly examine your shoulder and organise an MRI scan to help distinguish a rotator cuff strain from a tear. Can my Rotator Cuff injury heal itself? If you have a strain, you will require rest and rehabilitation with physiotherapy. In the majority of rotator cuff strains, recovery can take up to 3 months. In the more severe strains, your shoulder surgeon will perform a shoulder injection to help relieve your symptoms and aid your rehabilitation with physiotherapy. If you have sustained a tear, your surgeon will discuss treatment options with you. Unfortunately, rotator cuff tears do not heal themselves. Without treatment, your symptoms including pain, weakness and loss of range of movement can get worse. Treatment options can include injections, physiotherapy rehabilitation and/or ‘keyhole’ surgery. What does Rotator Cuff surgery involve?

recovery from keyhole surgery is much quicker, without any requirement to stay in hospital overnight (Day Case Surgery). What is the outcome following Rotator Cuff surgery? Following discharge, your surgeon will work with you and your physiotherapist to ensure that your rehabilitation progresses accordingly. They will help you achieve the range of motion and guide you through strength-conditioning to achieve the best possible outcome. In most cases, Mr Rhee advises that following rotor cuff repair you will aim to return to full activity by 3months, including lifting and sporting activity. If you are experiencing shoulder pain that might be related to your rotator cuff, it is important that you seek opinion from your shoulder surgeon promptly. To book a consultation with Mr Rhee at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital, please contact our Customer Services team on 01902 585980.

Rotator cuff surgery is performed as ‘keyhole’ (Arthroscopic) surgery. Keyhole surgery allows your surgeon to look inside your shoulder joint and use special instruments to repair the torn tendon. Your surgery will be performed under general anaesthesia and

aftersun to hand? Use a gentle moisturiser, such as unscented baby lotion. Avoid Vaseline and other petroleum jelly, as it’ll lock the heat in. You’ll want to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and cover up outdoors until the burn has gone. When you’re ready to brave the sun again, arm yourself with a decent sunscreen and make sure you reapply it regularly, even if it’s water-resistant.

SUNSCREEN GIVES ME SPOTS

W

hether you’re suffering from dry hands, cracked heels or sunburn, we might just have the solution…

HELP, MY HANDS ARE REALLY DRY AND SORE! First off, switch to a gentler soap. Look for a more natural one that doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulphate. Generally, bars of soap tend to be kinder to skin than liquid ones. You may also want to swap your hand sanitiser for one with added botanicals. (It’ll still need to be at least 60% alcohol to work.) I like Bramley’s Hand Sanitiser Gel, which includes rosemary, spearmint and peppermint essential oils. It’s kinder to skin and smells gorgeous (£4, www.bramleyproducts.co.uk). It can be tempting to pile on the hand cream, but some lotions can end up irritating your skin even more. Look for an unscented cream designed for sensitive skin, or just reach for a natural seed or fruit oil. Almond oil is ideal, but olive oil will also do the job and we’re guessing you may already have a bottle in the kitchen. Just massage a few drops of it into your hands before bed.

Sunscreens are often too rich for facial skin so can lead to breakouts, redness and irritation. Try switching to a lighter face cream with a high SPF. Hello Sunday’s The One That’s a Serum (£20, www.hellosundayspf. com) is SPF 45, lightweight, nongreasy and enriched with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C to boost hydration.

MY CRACKED HEELS LOOK AWFUL IN SANDALS Soak your feet in warm water for fifteen minutes before gently exfoliating. You can use a loofah or a homemade foot scrub (mix a handful of brown sugar with a tablespoon of olive oil). Avoid any areas with open wounds. Rinse and pat dry, then apply a thick moisturiser or balm. Lyonsleaf’s Calendula and Marshmallow Balm (£10.95, www.lyonsleaf.co.uk) is a good choice, as it’s designed to soothe and repair dry, cracked and irritated skin. It can also help skin complaints such as eczema and psoriasis. Pull on some thin cotton or bamboo socks to keep the balm from greasing up your bed sheets. Do this every night and you should see an improvement pretty quickly.

I WAS AIMING FOR BRONZED GODDESS, BUT I GOT COOKED LOBSTER… Ouch! Have a cool bath with a handful of porridge oats tied up in a thin cloth. The water will help to cool your skin and the oats will soothe irritation. Then apply aloe vera gel. It’s sticky, but effective. Don’t have any aloe vera or 104

Revolutionary Spinal Programme Solves Chronic Back and Neck Pain A Wombourne-based physiotherapy clinic has reported some remarkable results from patients who have completed its revolutionary Spinal Decompression Programme, with some even cancelling planned operations.

to find relief through a long-term solution that really works. Mother and School Business Manager, Talash Chopra, had her world turned upside down when she sustained a major disc prolapse. She went from a normal life – working, enjoying family life and exercising in her spare time – to being unable to stand or sit for more than a minute or two.

Physiotherapist Davinder Chatha, who heads up the clinic, said: “The main culprit of back and neck pain is compression of the spine and, until now, this has been near enough impossible to treat.”

Talash could only find relief by lying down and needed to take strong painkillers, which weren’t particularly effective. Eventually, there was only one option left; her doctor recommended spinal surgery, but it was a step she was reluctant to take.

“I’m now seeing these patients in my clinic a lot less frequently as they’ve found a solution to their health issues and, best of all, improved their quality of life.”

Talash confirmed: “I couldn’t walk or stand up straight and was in constant pain but, after my course of decompression therapy, I am now back at work, able to drive and can continue with day-today activities. I’m also off the painkillers and, more importantly, I no longer need an operation.”

“After specialising in spinal therapy for over 15 years, this is by far the most effective treatment for a range of painful and debilitating spinal conditions, and it has even exceeded my expectations.”

PAYCARE IN THE COMMUNITY

July/August 2021

PartnershiP With a Worthy goal School children in Ghana are set to benefit from a partnership between two UK organisations. Paycare, a not-forprofit Health Cash Plan and Wellbeing training provider, has teamed up with the netball Development trust to fund a programme of netball and sexual health education to benefit hundreds of pupils. the trust already has established projects in Kenya and Uganda, and a team first visited ghana in 2019 – they are now looking to introduce netball to children there who would otherwise have no access to sports facilities, opportunities, kit and equipment. training will also be provided to leaders and teachers to enable ongoing work once the programme has finished, with support from Akwaaba Volunteers – an organisation which helps deliver projects aimed at improving prospects for children and families. sally Bromley, Paycare’s Partnerships engagement Officer, explained sponsorship from Paycare would be used to enable a specialist sexual health nurse and a community nurse to deliver

a 12-week programme to 20 schools based in and around ghana’s capital city accra. Focusing on pupils aged 11 to 16, the programme will cover netball practice once a week and lessons on puberty, safe sex, gender-based violence, and the use of social media around sexual health. the nurses and akwaaba will also support the schools’ teachers to be able to continue this vital work after the programme finishes to ensure a lasting legacy. as well as the programme, the netball Development trust and akwaaba will provide a year’s health insurance for almost 500 of the most deprived youngsters who have not previously had any insurance – meaning they cannot access any healthcare. sally said: “We are absolutely thrilled and proud that Paycare is involved in and helping to fund this amazing work in Ghana. I was privileged to travel with Julie and Monica from the Trust, along with another eight incredible women, to Ghana in 2019 and work alongside them to start developing netball in the local schools. “I know first-hand how vital this programme will be for the children, teachers and schools involved.” Julie smith, the trust’s head of Development, added: “We’re so excited to see this new project starting up in Ghana, to help our children learn about their sexual health alongside having fun playing netball. “Paycare’s support means the world to us, and we’re delighted that their values truly align with ours.”

SHARING RESOURCES TO SUPPORT health anD haPPiness infographics which managers can download to support them with promoting their Health Cash Plan to their employees. We take a holistic approach to health and wellbeing so the topics are wide-ranging from optical and dental care to mental health support. “MyPeople is updated regularly in liaison with our companies with information they can share with their team to improve wellbeing, as well as reflecting what’s topical in health and wellbeing news at that time. Our marketing team love creating the resources, and I love sharing them!

Paycare is committed to sharing valuable resources with their Policyholders and the wider community. One of their fantastic Corporate Account Managers, Stephen Burton-Pye, marked Mental Health Awareness Week this year by posting daily wellbeing resources on his linkedin page to support his connections. he also sent copies of the resources and helpline links to those engaging with the initiative. stephen, who looks after more than 300 companies signed up to their Health Cash Plans as part of his role, said: “Like everyone at Paycare, I am incredibly passionate about supporting organisations and employees – as well as individuals – with mental health. “Paycare provides an exclusive login area called MyPeople which is full of posters, guides and

“Our companies sharing these resources in prominent locations around their workplace is really beneficial because it normalises conversations around mental health in the workplace, and can prompt someone who is perhaps struggling with their wellbeing to access support. “Some people don’t know where to turn if they need that support, and that’s why at Paycare we make sure to create and share blogs, infographics, posters and other types of resources alongside the mental health training we offer and our Employee Assistance Programme. “We are here solely to make others healthier and happier, so what better way to demonstrate this than by sharing these resources online too, to give even more people the chance to benefit from the tips and support they provide. There are so many people talking about Mental Health Awareness Week on LinkedIn, and it’s been great to be able to share the resources with some of them.”

MONTHLY E-CLINICS sUPPort WellBeing a new resource which has been available throughout the pandemic – and has been so successful it will be continuing long-term – is the Paycare Wellbeing monthly e-clinic. the free webinars, which each last just an hour, are based on different themes every time and are led by Paycare’s Wellbeing Manager Kerry B Mitchell. as well as sharing her expert knowledge on all things mental health, Kerry is often joined by a guest speaker with an in-depth insight into the topic at hand. so far, themes have included workplace wellbeing, aligning body and mind, nutrition and hydration, suicide, taking time out from technology, and coping with grief.

Kerry said: “The e-clinics have been incredibly well attended and it’s been great to see people coming together to learn more about wellbeing, and find out about the latest research into a specific topic. “I’m very grateful to the guest speakers who have joined us so far, as they’ve really added value to the e-clinics and been a fantastic support to the attendees.” attendees don’t have to be signed up to a Paycare Health Cash Plan or part of an organisation which has a Policy to join – they can simply go online to www.paycare.org/mhfa. and use their email address to register their free place.

Join our Fun, Friendly and Supportive Community for Dementia Navigating through dementia can be incredibly difficult and isolating. However, no-one should ever have to deal with it alone. If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with dementia, Brewood are here to offer support and a strong community of friendly people in a similar position. Founded by a group of dedicated volunteers 3 years ago, Brewood Dementia Support Group (BDSG) have since become a CIC non-profit making volunteer organisation, allowing the network to expand to neighbouring communities. Utilising the Brewood Community Hub as the group’s base for meetings and classes, there is plenty on offer here for you or your loved one! We are all trained to work with dementia - so whether it’s advice, a supportive network or even just opportunities to socialise in a dementia-friendly environment, we’re on hand to help. Certain activities on offer here have been proven to have real benefits for people living with the illness, such as our music and singing sessions. We also have 5 trained CST (Cognitive Stimulation Therapy) Facilitators here to deliver fun and helpful classes to aid cognitive function. The gradual easing of COVID-19 restrictions has given even greater opportunities for more exciting events. There is a 40s-themed visit to The Kingswood Trust near Pattingham planned this summer, where a 40s singer will lead the music and light entertainment for all. This will mark a perfect occasion for those with dementia to spend some real quality time with loved ones, meet new friends, and reminisce over their favourite childhood music!

Having fallen victim to the pandemic restrictions last year, BDSG’s eagerly anticipated ‘Lazy Sunday Afternoon’ is now taking place on 15th August. This event is the ideal, chilled weekend afternoon that its name suggests. With local musicians joining to offer light music, guests can enjoy a relaxed (and hopefully sunny) day whilst picnicking beside Brewood’s beautiful canal side. BDSG has recently received a commendation from the Staffordshire Star Awards for community groups, and so is more excited than ever to meet new people. Both the person diagnosed with dementia and a family member or carer will receive a warm welcome to all of our sessions. We understand that everyone is different and therefore we have no one-size-fits-all policy. From relaxed coffee chats to more stimulating classes and events, there is something here to suit everyone, providing fantastic support and fun for both the person diagnosed and their loved ones! We have 5 trained CST Facilitators who plan and deliver classes which have been proven to help with cognitive function. Music and singing have also been proven to help with memory function.

Girls of Tettenhall College Up Their Game Internationally

The sportswomen of Tettenhall College have taken lockdown’s sporting challenges head on and shown that true determination can transpire into great things by becoming international champions. For most, sporting activities have been on pause over the past 12 months, from barren football pitches to vacant gymnasiums, resulting in many of us being confined to our homes, with the only green space being a garden. International Gymnast, Gabriella W (Year 10), National Cricketer, Davina P (Year 9) and National Cheerleading Champion, Scarlett W (Year 9), have maintained strict training regimes and faced challenging practise environments, emerging as even more esteemed and celebrated Sportswomen. With gymnasiums having to close their doors through the pandemic, fervent gymnasts have faced true

motivational challenges, with no apparatus or gym space to practise. Gabriella, from Wednesfield, made it her mission to use this unique period to hone her core skills and form through daily zoom sessions, resulting in her fitness and sporting condition being at a record high. Gabriella is now en-route to being selected for the Commonwealth Games, 2022. Time away from the pitch did not stop Davina, who maintained her striking and fielding skills, alongside her teammates, through weekly online competitions in addition to completing strength and conditioning programmes. Davina who is also from Wednesfield, has been selected by Central Sparks Academy, an elite pathway programme that is part of the England pathway and Davina has hopes to be selected by the England cricket team. Aside her sporting endeavours, Davina has been somewhat of a media figure through the African-Caribbean Engagement programme (A.C.E),

which is a strategic programme designed to support diverse talent from the grassroots to the elite in cricket and encourage a better talent identification within Black communities. Having been selected for Team England prior to Lockdown 1.0, Scarlett, who lives in Bridgnorth, has continued to attend seven virtual classes a week alongside numerous strength and conditioning sessions. Competitions have recently concentrated on individual skills and Scarlett won a national ‘turning’ competition via her submission entry online. She continues to upload weekly videos of her choreography to team England and is looking forward to travelling internationally with the squad once restrictions lift. “Witnessing the girls’ success (amidst a pandemic) has been incredibly heartening to see. Their passion and drive for each of their sporting passions is astounding and I could not be prouder,” concluded Mrs Causebrook, Head of Girls’ Sport.

TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER Birchfield School, Albrighton has recently joined St Philips Education with St Dominic’s, Brewood. St Dominic’s has flourished under the guidance and support of St Philips, enjoying the local structure and support that they bring. Birchfield is already noticing the effect of joining St Philips, with work already underway to develop the senior school and provide a 3-year GCSE package. St Philips Education provides head office support to both the local schools. This means that there is a strong design, build and maintenance team in place, to help increase the provision at both schools, providing improved facilities for all the pupils, without needing to pass the cost onto the parents. St Dominic’s has recently had a new state of the art prep school science laboratory to foster young scientists

of the future. Birchfield is eagerly awaiting the arrival of their Victorian style greenhouse to enable the next generation of biologists to get their green fingers at the ready! Using the St Philips Education model provides all the benefits of a big school in a small school setting. The support provides both schools with the ability to share resources which can be costly when run in unison and gives an extended network that both schools can enjoy. Both schools are renowned for their family ethos, and these values are only enhanced by this collaboration. Bringing some of the timely aspect of managing a school into a central location frees both schools up to do what they are really good at – educating young minds. Both schools share core values, which place the children at the heart of everything. Investing in your child’s education is the greatest gift that you can give them. Both schools are renowned for their nurturing attitudes and for helping pupils to exceed

their aims. Key skills of independence, resilience, curiosity and confidence are developed across the two schools, whether your child is gifted on the stage, or the sports field, the learning process in both establishments will optimise your child’s potential. Everything that you would expect from your school is on offer at both locations, from wraparound care, to transport around the counties. There are ample opportunities for enhanced learning outside of the classroom, as well as supportive pastoral care. Inter schools sporting events are much anticipated to encourage healthy competitiveness as well as building bonds between the schools. With the economies of using a central head office to provide both schools with support for their behind-the-scenes running of the schools, St Philips Education is able to pass these savings onto you with reduced fees at key entry points across both schools. Whether you are looking to start your child in reception or are looking for a 6th form place to help gain a prestigious university place, we can help. It is never too late to invest in your child’s education, so let St Philips Education help your child to flourish. 121

The Importance of Primary School allocations

More affordable than you may think

Every April, parents across the country find out which primary schools have been allocated to their children. The news will be a cause for celebration for some, and disappointment for others. Either way, it’s big news. There are few things, after all, likely to have as big an impact on your child’s young life as their first school and those early experiences of formal education.

A common misconception is that private schools are only for the very wealthy. It is true that some Independent schools sit well outside the budget of most of us, but Newbridge provides an exceptional education without charging exorbitant fees. Prices, for Reception, start at around £612 per month.

Have you considered all the options? Private schools (also called independent) may not be on your radar. There are certainly plenty of parents at Newbridge who tell us that private education never crossed their minds until a chance conversation with a friend, concerns about their child’s progress or a last-minute decision to book a tour led them to explore the idea, and ultimately decide that it was the right choice for them.

Importantly, when it comes to Newbridge, this low price does not equate to low quality – we were named, nationally, as the Preparatory School of the Year 2020 by The Sunday Times. Fees at Newbridge are extremely competitive and proof that outstanding results are not reliant on prohibitive costs.

education. At Newbridge, the thorough grounding pupils receive in those crucial early and primary years gives them a real advantage, full of confidence to put themselves forward and grasp new opportunities, and with an appetite for knowledge and a strong work ethic that make future learning easier. In the last five years over 75% of our girls have passed the 11+ and attained places at either Wolverhampton or Newport Girls High School. Discover more A perfect way for you to find out more about Newbridge and the fantastic opportunities we offer to your child, is to book a personal tour with Mrs Fisher, Headmistress.

Value for money This may sound counter-intuitive, but a Newbridge education is an excellent investment because choosing a stand-alone ‘prep’ school does not commit you to a private senior school

College

Goes From Strength to Strength pupils, parents, staff and our whole community to get the most out of Wrekin and what this school has to offer,” said Mr Firth. “There is a sense of pride in what we have done and how we have come together but we know that we also need to look ahead and plan what more we can do for when restrictions will be lifted further. I want that to be a cause for great excitement and enhance the positive attitude we have in our community. “Throughout the last 18 months we have approached each new challenge by doing what we can wherever we can to just get on with things. It has served us well in that we have not dwelled on what we cannot do but instead focused on what we can.

New facilities will be officially unveiled at a Shropshire school next term as pupil numbers continue to grow. Wrekin College will take the wraps off a state-of-the-art dance studio and second artificial sports playing surface with the new academic year set to herald in the next exciting chapter in the school’s history. More than 500 pupils will be on the roll at the school in September, which means it will be bigger than it has ever been whilst clocking up a number of achievements in the last two years despite the disruption of the pandemic. A new £2.7million Music School opened in January 2020 and earlier this year Wrekin welcomed global music stars Sheku and Isata Kenneh-Mason to perform for pupils in a Covid-secure setting. The school also held a tennis masterclass with ATP stars Danny Sapsford and James Auckland inviting more than 80 pupils to take part in a number of Covid-secure sessions. Pupils also recorded record-breaking exam results in 2020, completed a series of employability boot camps led by national industry leaders, and, in a particular highlight, eight musicians at the school secured their Grade Eight qualification despite lessons having to go online. Headmaster Mr Tim Firth said today that pupils had continued to work towards significant achievements throughout three national lockdowns and he was extremely proud of the way the people at the school had coped throughout a period of great uncertainty. “We are very much looking forward to next year and embracing every opportunity for

“At times that has meant staff and pupils have had to innovate and put in the extra hours and effort to make it happen but it has paid off. I believe our pupils feel a sense of empowerment from a whole new set of skills they have learned and we have been encouraged by how they are approaching this next stage of their lives - that includes our current pupils and our leavers now ready to emerge from the classroom into the real world. We very much look forward to welcoming our new Wrekinians in September and working with them on all fronts to develop them.’’ Mr Firth said the new dance studio would have a professional sprung floor together with full-height mirrors and would allow the school to offer a new range of classes to pupils and performances for audiences. He added that sporting fixtures had returned in the summer term leading to a number of successes in cricket, tennis and athletics and that staff have organised a full schedule for the Autumn term. “It is so vital that we understand how much young people have missed taking part in performance events and getting out there to compete in the sporting, musical, dramatic and many other arenas. These are essential building blocks in encouraging confident and engaged learners and promoting wellbeing. As a school, it was in times of Covid and is always our duty to pull out all the stops to ensure these events happen. I want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to our staff and families who have shown such determination, patience and co-operation to get extra-curricular events back on for our pupils.” The Old Hall School which shares a campus with Wrekin College will also be using the new facilities while they will also be open to community groups as restrictions are lifted fully.

Albrighton

Senior school investment and new fee structure Birchfield School near Albrighton is looking forward to an exciting 2021 academic year as the development of their already impressive facilities is well underway, following a massive investment programme that will extend their senior school provision up to age 16. The school recently joined the St Philips Education Group, a move that led to the expansion of the senior school up to the age of 16 at Birchfield as part of a £500,000 investment. Birchfield is currently recruiting for Year 7 2021 up to 2025 and will be welcoming its first Year 9 cohort in September 2023. Headmistress, Sarah Morris, said the school was also seeing a considerable increase in interest from parents from across the region,

helped by a restructuring of fees to ensure a Birchfield education is affordable for more families. With fees for Year 7 starting at £8,000 per year, Birchfield is a natural choice for aspirational families. “It’s a very exciting year for Birchfield School and we look forward to welcoming even more pupils in September who will be able to enjoy a first-class private education with our amazing new facilities,” Mrs Morris added. “The senior school planning and developments are well underway and senior pupils can look forward to a smart new uniform and a stateof-the-art learning and sporting environment across the school, with special focus on science and sport.

“We are seeing greater numbers of parents from across the region who are viewing the school as the ideal option for their children’s education, encouraged by our policy of small class sizes to allow personalised learning for all pupils. This is backed up by Birchfield’s long tradition of academic, sporting and artistic success with pupils who are positive, confident, wellmannered and intellectually curious. “Enquiries from parents extend across all years throughout the school although it is worth mentioning that we only have a few places available in specific year groups. We have personal tours available at all times and an Open Morning planned for Saturday 16th October. Do come and see why Birchfield is such a special place to educate your children.”

“Birchfield’s location just off the A41 near Albrighton ensures that it is a convenient and easily accessible location for families from Wolverhampton, Telford and Newport. We will be supporting pupils from all these areas with the introduction of a minibus service in September to ease the travel process for families.

From servicing appliances to publishing a trilogy… Eddie’s still chasing his dreams.

In December 2019, one of our regular advertisers from Washer-wise, Eddie Johnson, released a self-published novel. Speaking to Eddie at the time of publication, he explained how the premise for his book had developed from a long string of graphic and repetitive dreams. Catching up with Eddie 18 months on, more is revealed on his lead-up to success. Initially considering his story too long for a debut release, Eddie was pleasantly surprised when his friend, Nick Hancock (famous for hosting the hit TV show “They Think It’s All Over”), told him otherwise. Instead of editing down a great story, Hancock suggested expanding and embellishing it out into a much bigger and more detailed saga. The result of this advice led to two published novels, and a third on the way. When asked about his experience, Eddie reflects: “Nick is a great guy - he helped me loads! He proofread the original and agreed to do the foreword for me, but only on the provision that it was done ‘warts and all’ and not just as a back-slapping exercise. Having known him for years, I tentatively agreed. I knew Nick to be very eloquent, but on the other hand, he could be bitingly satirical at times, so I had some trepidation over what he might say about me.” Having taken his friend’s advice, Part 2 was eventually released somewhat later than Eddie’s original expectation. This was due to the pandemic’s delaying of the editorial and cover designing progress. A full year after Part 1, Part 2 was finally released, with Nick penning the foreword once again. If everything goes to plan, Part 3 should be ready for release by mid to late July. It seems that Nick’s advice really did spur Eddie on and we are happy to be able to show you the cover for Part 2 and a sneak preview for Part 3. If you would like to read Nick’s foreword, and of course, the story, Part 1 and 2 are currently available via Amazon. Simply search the title ‘Breaking the Tranquillity of Solitude’. You can also visit Eddie’s author website at: www.edjpublishing.com where you’ll be able to view all his blogs and vlogs which chart the development process of the whole trilogy, right from the start. Good luck with Part 3 Eddie, we will be looking forward to it! 140

CLEAN UP WITH HIQ WOLVERHAMPTON HiQ Wolverhampton has launched a new Hydrocarbon Engine Descaling service that could save West Midlands motorists thousands of pounds. If the engine warning symbol lights up on your dashboard or your car feels sluggish and underpowered, there’s a 75% chance that carbon build-up is the cause. Burning carbon-based fuels like petrol and diesel creates soot, which builds up over time, clogging vital components. This not only impairs performance but can also cause irreparable damage, leading to costly repairs. Replacing a particulate filter typically costs £1,500, an EGR Valve around £350, while a new Turbocharger could set you back £2,000 or more. Hydrocarbon Engine Descaling protects these vital components, maximising their performance and service life.

What is Hydrocarbon Engine Descaling? Hydrocarbon Engine Descaling removes unburnt hydrocarbon deposits from your engine and deep-cleans vital components

Photo taken pre-Covid 19 by injecting hydrogen into the air intake. This returns the engine to its original condition, reduces harmful emissions by up to 50%, and improves fuel consumption by as much as 15%. The process takes between 45 minutes to 2 hours and the results last up to 12 months.

Special Introductory offer Hydrocarbon Engine Descaling may be new to HiQ, but the technology we use is tried, tested and proven.

www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

Over 1 million de-scaling services have been successfully carried out since our partner, FlexFuel, introduced the service in 2014. As a special introductory offer, we’re offering 15% off all Hydrocarbon Engine Descaling services carried out in July and August 2021. To find out more, call HiQ Wolverhampton on 01902 420 234. We’re always happy to help.

This is the history of the

Land Rover Discovery

The Discovery has been a core part of Land Rover’s line-up for decades. Incorporating premium touches and a comfortable interior while retaining the off-road prowess expected from a Land Rover model, it’s little wonder why it has proved so popular over the years.

To address this, Land Rover introduced the Discovery. First revealed at the 1989 Paris Motor Show, the Discovery initially arrived as a three-door model but was quickly offered with a five-door option too. It was facelifted in 1994 while at the same time a strippedback Commercial version was launched.

The most recent Discovery model represents the greatest evolution of the nameplate yet, but to see how it got there it’s worth looking at how things have changed over time. Let’s take a look at the history of the Land Rover Discovery.

1998: The three-door version gets dropped

1989: The Discovery arrives The late ‘80s proved to be a time when SUVs started gaining in popularity. Though Land Rover already had some offerings in this segment with both the Defender and Range Rover, the firm didn’t have an option between them. 142

Though the Discovery had been on sale for close to a decade, the second-generation arrived looking more like a mid-life refresh. However, with a comprehensively new chassis and a five-door-only layout, it represented quite the change from the earlier version. This new model had a greater focus on practicality, which was why the interior was made more spacious than before. Again, Land Rover introduced a facelifted version later on in 2002. wolverhampton west magazine

2004: A whole new look

2014: Discovery becomes a sub-brand

The arrival of the Discovery 3 really got the motoring industry talking. Though it was still square and boxy, the look of it represented a radical departure from earlier models, while every single component was new.

The start of the 2010s represented a turning point for SUVs. Gaining in popularity, off-roaders and four-wheel-drive were being snapped up thick and fast, while all manner of manufacturers were producing their own high-riding options.

Incorporating a wheelbase that ran close to three metres long, it offered plenty of space for seven people yet was packed with high-end features. Land Rover also fitted it with its most advanced terrain response system to date, which meant that despite the increase in quality the Discovery was no less capable off-road. 2009: Slicker than ever The fourth Discovery hit the road in 2009 but, in truth, was more of a facelifted ‘3’. The looks remained largely unchanged, though the headlights were more modern in their design while the grille was more complex. Yet these subtle updates ensured the Discovery continued to look fresh. Land Rover made some big changes to the powertrains available with the Discovery, while a range of special editions was launched. One highlight was the XXV, which was released to celebrate the car’s 25th anniversary in 2014.

During this time Land Rover decided to scrap its Freelander, replacing it with the Discovery Sport – a more compact 4x4 that used the Discovery name to capture some of the premium appeal of the larger model. 2016: The fifth generation arrives Land Rover revealed its striking fifthgeneration Discovery at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, unveiling a car that was substantially different to the car it replaced. Sales kicked off from the start of 2017. The interior made another shift upmarket, while a range of Jaguar Land Rover’s latest Ingenium engines provided more than enough performance. The level of technology on offer was considerably improved, yet the Discovery’s off-road abilities were retained, thanks to even more complex terrain assistance systems. Today, the 2021 Discovery update has brought electrified powertrains to the seven-seater, in the form of mild-hybrid petrols and diesels.
