From the editor

It’s 2021 and – my goodness – I’m very glad it is. After a year fraught with adversity and fear it is with enormous relief that I can bring to you an editor’s letter filled with hope and expectation. Now we have a vaccine life can and will get better. Yes, much uncertainty still remains – with Brexit’s ultimate outcome unsure at the time of writing and the enormously tricky vaccine roll-out still ahead – however, you find me in jubilant mood.

We’ve all learned so much about what it is that matters most in life, learned first-hand how it is through togetherness that we endure the toughest times. A cheerful, simple and, of course, responsible Christmas - which was way better than I’d expected - again reminds me of how the smallest things deliver the biggest pay-off. Who knows, we may one day soon be able to enjoy a holiday, or two, in due course. I know I’m aching for one.

But now is the time for some much-deserved routine and contentment, never before have so many of us been so deserving of it. So here it begins for you, with Town and Village Life’s friendly amble through your local neighbourhood.

If 2020 taught nothing else, it’s that we need to look after it – and each other. We want to thank our advertisers for supporting the magazine throughout this difficult time. Without them we would not be publishing and delivering a magazine through your door. Running with the theme of keeping things closer to home is our special feature on kitchens. Often considered the hub of the home, it seems that the once cluttered and cramped room that everyone tried to escape from after a messy cook-off, is today more designer than ever before. Plan lighting as early as possible If you are redecorating, consider whether it would also be a good time to upgrade your lighting scheme. Perhaps adding some wall lights above the seating in the living room would give greater flexibility, while wall lights mounted either side of a bed will free up space on the bedside table. How about a row of lights over the dining table? A picture light above a favourite painting or photograph? Or some spotlights to provide good working light above your home-office desk? If you are replastering anyway, the necessary wiring may not be overly difficult to incorporate and the results will be well worth the effort.

Light in layers Design your lighting so that it comes from several different sources and directions, the idea being to ‘layer’ it for both practicality and aesthetics.

Think of it as painting with light, creating washes and filling in with highlights and lowlights. Professionals think of four types of lighting: general, task, accent and atmosphere, and you can mix several types in each room using a combination of ceiling lights and pendants, wall washers, floor or table lamps, and special shelf or picture lights.

switches make all lightings schemes more versatile, but it can be trickier to dim LEDs, so consult your electrician before investing in any specific fittings.

The latest in lighting

it is still easy to introduce flexibility by adding floor and table lamps for better illumination at mid and higher levels around the room. With judicious placement these will provide both improved functionality and visual variety.

Get the best bulbs Don’t put up with energyguzzling light bulbs that are too dazzling, too dim, too white or too yellow. It is a simple matter to replace them with ones that are the right brightness and colour – and it may save you money in the long run, too. The old-fashioned energy-saving bulbs that we all know and hate used to take forever to turn on, but modern LED versions become bright instantly. Although expensive initially, they are cheap to run and should last for years (or even decades). For a warm, welcoming light, look for bulbs marked around 2,700K (kelvins measure the colour temperature of a bulb; the higher it is, the whiter the light).

As for how bright they will be, this is undoubtedly confusing.

Don’t think in watts any more (this is a measure of how much energy the bulb consumes); instead, it’s all about lumens (lm), meaning brightness. If you want the equivalent of a 40w bulb, you’re looking for around 470lm, while a 60w equates to around 800lm. The packaging should explain it clearly.

Another point to note: dimmer

Lighting technology is moving fast. LED lighting has changed the game, allowing for very small, slim fittings in places that were not previously possible. Strip lights can be placed around the home to create interesting effects, while the energy efficiency of LED means that cordless, batterypowered lights can be placed almost anywhere. Meanwhile, ‘smart’ lights that wake you up, turn on as you walk into a room or change colour in time to your music are all pretty standard these days, and you can control them via an app, a remote control or even voice commands. Look out for futuristic innovations such as lighting that supports bio-rhythms via adjustable light levels (avoid that post-lunch low!) and light panels that look like skylights, incorporating a horizon effect, to bring ‘daylight’ into windowless areas.

What else will new technology bring? One thing’s for sure: the future’s bright.

BLACK COUNTRY

It’s always a challenge to write about something when no-one can agree upon not only where it is but, to some extent, what it is as well.

Although undoubtedly in the middle of England, the Black Country is just such a topic. It is a region so richly unique that it still promotes fierce debate even to this day about not only where exactly it got its name from but where exactly it begins and ends.

And when the government did step in to officially define the region, it only made things worse. Today the Black Country is described, by the government, as being most of the four Metropolitan District Council areas of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton. Many will agree that the term ‘Black Country’ is most often used as a marketing tool to help sell and promote the West Midlands to the rest of the country.

However, the true reality of the region is that it has no borders and is instead defined by people, dialect, geology, culture and industry.

It is easy to see why so many have struggled to grasp something so nebulous, especially when its name is most likely very literal: likely 26

arriving in the mid-nineteenth century, it derives from the black smoke that was released by the many thousands of ironworking foundries and forges in the area.

Charles Dickens wrote in his 1841 novel The Old Curiosity Shop that the area’s factories “poured out their plague of smoke, obscured the light, and made foul the melancholy air.” JRR Tolkien - who was brought up in the West Midlands and no doubt mined here for inspiration for the fictional Mordor, which means ‘black land’, for his Lord

of the Rings trilogy - referred often to the intensity of manufacturing in the Black Country and its effect on the landscape and its people.

And so what is – roughly – the geographical area in question? Arguably it encompasses the area where the relatively shallow, 30ft thick ‘South Staffordshire’ coal seam comes to HIMLEY HALL

the surface – and so pertains to West Bromwich, Oldbury, Blackheath, Cradley Heath, Old Hill, Bilston, Dudley, Tipton, Wednesfield and parts of Halesowen, Wednesbury and Walsall. Said to be the thickest layer of coal in Britain, it makes the soil in these places quite black. Baggeridge Colliery, near Sedgley, was said to mark the most northern edge, where the coal seam reached the surface. It was the last remaining pit in the Black Country until it closed in 1968.

Dudley is generally regarded as the “capital” of the Black Country, and so some say that the Black Country is anywhere within a five-mile radius of Dudley Castle, but this is far too neat and simple a solution. It’s far easier to list famous people from the area: they include Lenny Henry, Beverley Knight, Noddy Holder, Julie Walters and Robert Plant.

The Black Country is described by history as a grim place, with dirty,

soot-coated buildings and filthy streams with no fish; a lack of trees and few birds. TS Eliot’s poem, The Wasteland, probably didn’t sell well in these parts; the region was for many decades a blackened wilderness, scarred by spoil heaps and smoking furnaces.

Even before the Industrial Revolution, the area was known for its industry based on the local coal and iron ore. Local weapons maker Dud Dudley was one of the first people to use coal to smelt iron ore. In 1862, Elihu Burritt, the American consul in Birmingham, gave inspiration for what today adorns the region’s flag, when he said the region was “black by day and red by night”. As for the chains on the flag… well, Netherton did manufacture anchors and chains for the Titanic.

With so much history coursing through the region it’s no wonder Black Country folk are keen to retain their local identity and dialect and distinguish themselves

from Birmingham. And so am I, because on many occasions, whenever I’ve been in London, I’ve been referred to as a “Peaky Blinder”. And – since I hail from Wolverhampton - I certainly do not belong to the Birmingham tribe who refer to Black Country people as “Yam Yams”, because they often say ‘yow am’ or ‘yow’m’ instead of ‘you are.’

However, I’ve since learned that according to traditional definitions Wolverhampton, Stourbridge and Smethwick do not belong in the Black Country, so where does this leave me – and indeed many of you readers?

Deep in an identity crisis, I suppose…

Clubs of Kinver and Kidderminster

LOCAL ROTARY CLUBS JOIN FORCES The Rotary clubs of Kinver and Kidderminster have joined forces to support a group of volunteers in Cookley, a village lying between the two communities, who are seeking funds to undertake a series of projects to enhance the lifestyle of residents in the village.

The team behind “Cookley in Bloom” have, since 2018, created a community garden where vegetables may be harvested by villagers who may also take advantage of a lending library cabinet; converted a neglected roadside area into a formal flower bed and wildflower area; renovated neglected passageways, and subsequently extended the community

The two Rotary clubs have now donated £750 to the group to enable them to move forward with plans for a sensory garden, primarily for the benefit of the local Dementia Group but which will be open to all; planting of an orchard using Worcestershire fruit trees; a children’s play area; a wildlife area; and siting of a grow tunnel to ensure a continued supply of plants for all these projects and extend both the range and length of time the vegetables may be provided as well as the propagation of flowers to be used around the village .

It is also intended to construct a 2020 commemorative pebble pathway, formed of stones painted by people within the community, reflecting the impact caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bill Southam of the Cookley in Bloom group says: “This most welcome donation from the two Rotary Clubs will help us to move forward with our plans for the future and continue the embryonic work of the group. We have already raised money through crowd funding, plant sales, and raffles; however, it is calculated that we will need approximately £2000 to complete the work.”

As well as following all Whitehall directives we have followed all the Department of Culture Media and Sport guidelines and the RFU “ Return to Rugby” Road Map. But all has not been lost as there has been plenty of training for all ages outside lockdowns and at every opportunity we have arranged some seven a side Touch Rugby. A format that keeps everyone fit and concentrates on basic skills.

Our AGP pitch has also been used regularly for 6-a-side football and for the Sandwell College Rugby Academy which is based here offering a BTEC Level 3 extended Diploma in Sport.

The RFU, in conjunction with the National Clubs Association are forging ahead with a Regional

Competition of Adapted Rugby that would start at the earliest in mid-February. There would be eight Regional Groups of between five and seven sides. Each side would play each other home and away with a knock-out competition at the end for the winners. We would be in a “region “ of seven clubs, the other six being Loughborough Students, Hinckley, Leicester Lions, Cinderford, Luctonians and Birmingham Moseley. The other seven groups would comprise both National 1 and National 2 sides. There would be no scrums or mauls, reduced line-outs and “tap and go” restarts after any knock-on and only below the knee tackling.

Despite no scrummaging each team would permanently have to have three front row forwards on the field of play. Anything to get a semblance of rugby up and running. The referees, coaches and players will have fun interpreting this new concept but everyone is keen to get something happening this season. No doubt any further lockdown or Tier restraints will become a factor in the practicalities.

All the government help with grants, loans and furlough have been a great help to us. We are also fortunate and proud to have a loyal core of members and sponsors who have willingly continued to support us through the season despite being fully aware that the chances of any proper rugby this season are remote.

We are very grateful that they are as keen as we are to protect the future of the club.

for House Plants Create a beautiful indoor garden in any room.

House plants look amazing, adding colour, pattern, texture, interesting forms and a feeling of vibrancy. They can fill a dull corner, provide soft screening and help dampen noise. The Royal Horticultural Society reports that indoor plants have been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce fatigue and headache.

Intriguingly, patients in hospital rooms containing plants report decreased post-operative pain.

The psychological benefits include the satisfaction of nurturing a small seedling to a healthy, mature plant, as well as the pleasure of watering, misting and pruning, while the RHS says that house plants have been shown to reduce stress levels, improve mood, increase productivity and potentially lengthen attention span. Plants make us feel good.

For fashion followers, the most-discussed plants on Reddit in 2020 included the pothos, monstera, philodendron, calathea, hoya and peperomia. On the other hand, the world’s most Instagrammed houseplants include the Swiss cheese plant (monstera deliciosa), fiddle leaf fig (ficus lyrata), Chinese money plant, snake plant and money tree.

Where to put your house plants Generally plants need good light (but not bright, direct sunlight) and should be away from heat sources, draughts and cold.

Darker rooms like bathrooms need shade-tolerant plants. Provide a stable, waterproof base, and keep harmful plants away from children and pets. Huge statement plants look incredible in hallways, living rooms or dining room corners, or group several plants together for a similar effect. Place

smaller plants on tables or use tall planters, or put a row of small plants on a mantelpiece, shelf or window ledge, or dot them among books and vases in a bookcase.

Hang them from the ceiling, stage them in steps, or pop them on wall racks. Grouping in odd numbers looks best, and a range of widths and heights looks relaxed.

Opt for varying shades of leaf colours or try a more regulated appearance, and contrast leaf shapes for natural variety.

We at Willows Dental love nothing more than being able to help others and we strive to do this in many ways.

One of them is working closely with the Tettenhall Round Table. The Tettenhall Table is an association which both Neel and the Willows Dental team have been honoured to support over many years.

The Round Table established in 1956 and has been a source of both fellowship and fundraising ever since.

Membership to the association is open to all men between the ages of 18 and 45 in the both UK and Ireland. They provide their members with a selection of social and community service related opportunities and projects. The objectives of the association are the encouragement of high ethical standards in commercial life, the promotion of fellowship amongst young professional and business men, and to “empower each individual to make a positive impact at home, work and in his community”. But more than that, and most importantly, they raise considerable funds for local charities and causes each year.

The social aspect of round table is very important as they undertake local activities such as Go Karting, Axe Throwing and even tried Medieval Combat! Social

Every year the Round Table takes an international trip with their members and have been to some of the most beautiful and cultural cities in the world such as Milan, Riga, Madrid and even Chernobyl. Overall the Round Table is about having fun, making new friends and trying something new all for good causes.

The Tettenhall Round Table raises their funds to give to local charities by running and participating in long standing events such as the Tettenhall Town Fete, Santa Sleigh runs and also annually hosting a field next to the Cosford Air Show. The funds generated have helped support many local charities such as New Cross Hospital. The Table have also heavily contributed to acquiring multiple defibrillators for Compton, Tettenhall & Tettenhall Wood as well helping to replace a stolen unit in Kingswinford. It is lovely to be able to help fund these projects which give so much benefit to the community.

Neel has been a member of the Table for a number of years and will continue to be an important part of its organisation. Neel has run stalls at the local fete as well as promoting the Annual Ball.

In 2020 during the COVID pandemic Willows Dental itself helped as much as it could by donating hundreds of Dental Care Packs to those in need, both staff and patients at New Cross Hospital, trying to support those on the front line through difficult times.

We at the Willows are all about having fun, but most importantly about giving back to families in the local area and helping where we can. It’s been a tough year and we enjoy supporting local organisations and innovative projects within our community.

Aromatherapy has been used for centuries to help people de-stress, unwind and get a better night’s sleep.

(All benefits that most of us could probably do with after what 2020 threw at us!).

I

f you’re trying to focus on wellbeing this year, our simple DIY bath and body oil deserves a place on your to-do list.

Relaxing bath and body oil First off, you’re going to need a base or carrier oil, such as

jojoba or sweet almond oil.

These are suitable for all skin types, very moisturising and packed with antioxidants.

Pour the carrier oil into a bottle.

Ideally use an amber coloured, rather than clear, bottle. The oil will then stay fresh for longer as it’ll have greater protection from light.

Add a few drops of lavender essential oil and geranium essential oil to the bottle. As a rough guide, you’ll need around fifteen drops of essential oil for each 30ml of carrier oil.

Lavender and geranium are a match made in heaven. Together, they can help to promote a feeling of calm and relaxation.

Ideally, leave your bath and body oil to ‘brew’ for forty-eight hours before using it. Then just add a splash of the oil to your bath, or massage it into your skin.

It should keep fresh for a few months as long as you store it out of direct sunlight. If you’re making it for a gift, don’t forget

to write the ingredients and directions on a sticky label or tag.

Fragrance combinations Not keen on lavender?

Other scents that promote relaxation include bergamot, nutmeg, palmarosa, ylangylang and frankincense.

Or if you want an energy boost, try citrusy aromas such as grapefruit, lemon, sweet orange, lemongrass and lime, or warm, spicy ones such as cinnamon, clove and cypress.

Why not experiment with a few different essential oils to see which combinations you like best? (Try the blends out in an oil burner by adding a few drops to water and lighting a candle underneath).

Comforting face mask While the following recipe from Green People doesn’t include aromatherapy oils, the fragrance from the honey and lemon is both comforting and refreshing. The mask helps to nourish and soften dry skin. It won’t keep for long, so use it as soon as you’ve made it. It should prove a welcome treat after a stressful day.

Mash half a medium-sized avocado, and mix it with one tablespoon of Manuka honey and one teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Massage the mixture into your face and neck. Then lie back and relax for fifteen to twenty minutes, before rinsing the mask off with warm water.

Safety tips To avoid irritation and other side effects, don’t apply undiluted essential oils directly to your skin. When you’re diluting them in oil, keep them under 3% of the total mix. Some essential oils are not recommended during pregnancy, so do check the bottle.

A New Year, A New Season

If the weathers fine and frost free, get out into the garden to finish any clearing up jobs that weren’t done at the end of 2020, especially tidying up leaves and debris. This will help to prevent disease from spreading and removes hiding places for slugs and snails. If the snow and hard frosts do arrive make sure vulnerable plants – Hebe, Phormium, Cordyline, Palms and Tree Ferns are covered with fleece. Remember to make sure outdoor taps are lagged and covered over in the winter to prevent any cracking and leaks caused by freezing.

appy New Year to everyone, here’s hoping that 2021 is a much better year than 2020 and we can look forward to seeing everyone without restrictions.

Seed potatoes usually arrive at the start of the New Year, weather permitting. Once you get them home, put them to chit (allow shoots to form), egg trays are ideal for this, place them in a light, cool and frost-free environment. You can start seed potatoes growing in pots inside as early as you like, so long as they are protected from any frosts we may have.

Whilst you have very little in your greenhouse, January and February are the ideal times to turn it out, wash it down and disinfect it. Only wash glass down on a mild day to avoid cracking cold panes of glass. Having a clean greenhouse at the beginning of the season ensures that seeds and plants get off to a good start.

If you haven’t used winter wash on your fruit trees yet, do so on a mild day before the buds start to burst, this will clear up any pests and their eggs left overwintering on your trees. Make sure you have a grease band

If you want to start something off early in the greenhouse try sowing some sweet pea seeds in a cool environment. Use a seed compost and sow them into peat pots, 2 to 3 seeds per pot. When they’re ready for planting out the roots will have grown through the pot and it’s then very easy to just pop the plant into the ground or a container.

Plug plants will be available around the beginning of March, but they will need heat to start with. Grow them in the house to get a head start, but remember you need to take note of the weather conditions and not be in a rush to put tender plants out before May time.

Don’t forget our feathered friends, especially if the weather is poor – we’ve always got peanuts, seed, mealworms, fat balls and feeders in stock. Clean off bird tables regularly and remember to put out fresh water daily.

Well, what a year 2020 has been! If there is one lesson to be learnt this year it’s the importance of team work. All of our team have worked incredibly hard to meet demand as well as abiding by the ever-changing Covid -19 guidelines.

Dan joined the team in January 2019, initially to help with the completion of the purpose-built firewood shed but has been here ever since.

In between firewood deliveries, he manages and services all of the plant, machinery and vehicles so that everything runs smoothly.

Paul and George, who started work at Black Country Firewood in Autumn 2019, at this time of year are based predominately in the Firewood Centre. Despite a slight age gap, Paul an ex-serviceman and George who will be turning 18 next year, both work like two well oiled cogs! Their roles involve preparing deliveries, production of kindling and serving customers who have placed orders through our click and collect service. They also keep the place clean and tidy which keeps the rest of us in check!

In November, Ed joined the team as a relief delivery driver so we now have three trucks delivering, six days a week. This additional driver has allowed us to extend our delivery radius to areas such as Bourneville, Walsall, and Quinton.

An extra pair of hands has also meant that Rich can concentrate on answering the phone, organising deliveries (which is a lot easier said than done!), and answering any customer enquiries. We pride ourselves on being able to deliver to the majority of our customers within 2-3 days. This year, Rich celebrates his 10th year with us. Anything he doesn’t know about firewood isn’t worth knowing!

Reduce your financial risk ‘Risk-free investments’ is a bold claim, but you need to check the definition.

E

ven when savings or investments have a fixed return, you do face a more fundamental risk: that the organisation promising to pay you winds up not doing so, for example if it goes bust.

For this reason, investing or saving in a government programme is normally considered extremely low-risk, even more so when you’re dealing with the UK government.

The best known government programmes are operated by National Savings and Investment.

These include ISA programmes where the returns are tax-free and saving programmes where the returns are treated as part of your taxable income.

Unfortunately, while you still have security from such programmes, the level of return recently moved from mediocre to miniscule. The Direct ISA product has dropped from paying 0.9% a year to 0.1% a year, while the Direct Saver dropped from 1% to 0.15%.

Even the Junior ISA, which lets you save for a child (who can only withdraw the money once they turn eighteen), has dropped from 3.25% to 1.5%.

For those who are willing to have a little less security, it may be worth looking at savings rates from banks, building societies and other institutions.

Look for banks and building societies that are registered and regulated in the UK, as normally any savings up to £85,000 are guaranteed by the government.

For those looking for a little excitement without giving up security, Premium Bonds are still worth a look. You can put in anything between £25 and

£50,000 with the guarantee of getting it back in full at any time. You don’t get any interest, but for each £1 of bonds you own, you have a one in 34,500 chance of winning a prize each month, the highest of which is £1 million. All prizes are tax-free.

Another effectively ‘risk-free’ option is gilts. These work a little like bonds issued by businesses to raise money but are instead issued by the government. The name is short for ‘gilt-edged security’ from the idea that the UK government repaying investors is as close to a sure thing as it gets.

You get a guaranteed payment every six months for the fixed lifespan of the gilt, then get your money back when it matures.

You can also buy or sell the gilt on the open market and get any payments due while you hold it. The market price will vary over time, largely depending on how well other types of investments such as stocks are doing and thus how good the gilt looks in comparison.

With any guaranteed return investment, don’t forget inflation.

If you make one per cent return in a year but prices have risen by two per cent, you’ve effectively lost money. Often this is unavoidable in a poor market for savers, but you need to take it into account when weighing up the balance of risk and reward across different investments.

But can you really make a trip a complete holiday, suitable for all ages? Solange Hando gives us a tour of some of the highlights based around the area’s largest lake, Windermere.

LAKE Windermere A long ribbon of water that is the largest natural lake in England. Fed by rivers as it stretches south, it is no more than a mile across but over ten miles long and about 220 feet deep. It is home to Atlantic salmon, arctic char, brown trout and more. But equally magical for visitors are quaint villages and mountain peaks rising all around, mirrored in its glistening waters.

On the water Dozing around the nineteenth century rail station, the small town of Windermere is a mile or so from the lake. But Bowness-on-Windermere, its older neighbour, is the tourists’ honeypot, with a ferry across the water and fabulous cruises on modern or traditional boats, providing allocated seating and commentary. Sail north to Ambleside or south to Lakeside, or book the circular Island Cruise for stunning views of the isles, the mountains, wooded shores and bays.

There are aquatic plants and wintering birds, swans gliding here and there and pretty sails flapping in the breeze.

It’s a lovely way to relax and some cruises allow you to stop and return on a later boat.

Back on land Perhaps visit a museum or two, maybe the Lakeland Motor Museum or the Jetty Museum of ‘Boats, Steam and Stories’, look around the Bobbin Mill or the Blackwell Arts & Crafts House. For families, the World of Beatrix Potter is a must. Character displays, storytelling, all sounds and smells and a fairylike gift shop, it fires anyone’s imagination.

Beatrix loved her holidays in Windermere and later bought a house, ‘Hill Top’ in Near Sawrey, which inspired many of her books. Both the house and the cottage garden are open to the public. Meanwhile in Ambleside, the mock-Gothic Wray Castle is a great place for children to roam around with a chance to dress up and build their own foam castle. www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

Historic Homes Then there are historic houses, such as Holker Hall, home of the Cavendish family, and delightful gardens, among them Ryder Hall and its 500-year-old sweet chestnut tree, or in the spring Stagshaw, ablaze with azaleas and rhododendrons or the quiet Dora’s Field full of daffodils, just like the originals planted

by Wordsworth in memory of his beloved daughter. The poet, who wrote over 70,000 lines, spent much of his life around Grasmere and you can visit Dove Cottage and its museum and Rydal Mount, the final home near his humble grave in St Oswald’s churchyard.

On the rails Railway enthusiast? Let’s face it, who isn’t when it’s nothing like a commute, so don’t

miss the steam train from Haverthwaite to Lakeside and soak up the scenery along the lake and the river Leven near Fell Foot Park. It’s a short trip but can be combined with a visit to the Lakes Aquarium.

For the more adventurous For an adrenaline buzz try mountain biking, treetop walking, kayaking, abseiling or trekking in the hills. Horse riding is another option – previous experience not required – which is very popular with families.

Of course, there’s a lot of water around so sailing, swimming. paddleboarding and other water activities are great fun as the weather warms up.

Winding down When evening comes, take time to wander, ‘lonely as a cloud’, as the sun sets all purple and gold over quiet waters.

Christmas Bauble Campaign Just like many organisations Promise Dreams has seriously been affected by the coronavirus.

Charity trustee Suresh Bawa said: “We are now open a few hours a week and are desperately trying to raise funds for our beautiful children.

“With no possibility of any fundraising activity in the near future, in November we launched our Christmas Bauble campaign and with the help of The Mount Hotel, Tettenhall and the generosity of our supporters managed to raise an amazing £5,500.

“In return for a minimum donation of £10, messages went on our special tree for everyone to see in time for Christmas.

“The money raised helped 5 beautiful children and their families realise their dream and we cannot thank you enough.

“One family needed our help really quickly as, sadly mom has just been diagnosed with a terminal illness also! They just wanted to go to Centre Parcs to have some quality time together, while they still could and thanks to the generosity of our amazing supporter Dan Gellini, whose son Max we helped a few years ago, they will get their dream.

“We know everyone is struggling in these strange times, and are not certain of our future.

1 Cook the soba noodles in a pan of boiling water following the packet instructions. Add

this year Founded in 2014, Veganuary is an initiative that encourages people across the world to try veganism in January. Here, we look at the reasons to take part and how to survive a month – or more – without meat and dairy.

V

eganism has ballooned in recent years, with a record 400,000 people signing up to the Veganuary movement in 2020. Documentaries like ‘What the Health’, ‘Cowspiracy’ and David Attenborough’s ‘A Life on Our Planet’ have helped drive the trend, all of which shed light on the benefits of a vegan diet for our health and for the planet.

What is veganism and why should you try it?

A vegan diet is one that excludes all animal products, including meat, dairy, eggs and even honey in favour of plants and plant-based products.

In short, a vegan lifestyle is one that tries, as much as possible, to exist without harming animals.

The benefits of adopting a more plant-based diet are numerous. David Attenborough said himself that our planet simply cannot sustain seven billion meat eaters, and scientists have claimed that eating large amounts of meat and dairy is linked to several health conditions too.

When done correctly, it’s possible to get all the nutrients you need from a totally plant-based diet. It

can also help you lose weight and introduce you to more fruits, vegetables, seeds and grains that you wouldn’t normally incorporate into your weekly shop.

Veganism may not be for everyone, but even just trying it for a month will reduce your carbon footprint and may encourage you to eat less meat and dairy in the future.

The big question: how?

Supermarkets, cafes and restaurants have been filling their shelves and kitchens with tasty meat and dairy substitutes over the last couple of years, meaning finding something you like is easier than ever. Book shops and the internet are packed full of tasty recipes, and if you sign up to Veganuary you’ll receive weekly tips and recipes to keep you on track.

Seitan, Quorn and tofu are fantastic substitutes for meat and can be used to create plant-based versions of your favourite dishes. They’re all easy to cook, packed with healthy plant proteins and have a very convincing meat-like texture.

Supermarkets are now filled with a huge array of plantbased milks, including soy, oat, almond and coconut, and a huge variety of vegan cheeses too. Although they won’t taste exactly like the real deal, they’re close enough – and delicious in their own right! Eating out is also easier than ever, with more and more restaurants adding vegan options to their menus every year.

What about your health?

Contrary to popular belief, you can get all the nutrients your body needs from eating a varied and balanced vegan diet. The only vitamin that’s difficult to find is Vitamin B-12, but thankfully many cereals, soy milks – and even Marmite – are fortified with this essential vitamin.

Eat your five-a-day, pack lots of protein-rich beans and pulses into your diet, and get your calcium and iron from green, leafy vegetables and wholemeal bread. If you find it difficult to cram everything in, supplements are an option and the Veganuary website has plenty of nutrition tips for going vegan the right way.

OUR TEAM HAS GROWN TO HELP PEOPLE WHO STRUGGLED TO HEAR

OVER THE FESTIVE PERIOD The festive period may have felt slightly different this year but it is obvious that people are still struggling to hear conversation with family members whilst we are finding alternative ways to make memories together.

We have been inundated with enquires from people needing help with their hearing, needing either hearing tests or wax removal due to feeling ‘blocked up’.

As a result, we are very happy to welcome our new member of the clinical team. Julia joins us at Hear in Hagley to support our clients, who require wax removal to help them hear better with more confidence.

Julia wanted to join Hear in Hagley due to the exceptional reputation of the clinic. With an extensive customer care background, Julia wanted to further her career as a Hearing Health Practitioner which we were very excited about.

SAYS PAYCARE TEAM Carry on supporting the community where you can – that was the message from Paycare as the team looked back over the past year. While 2020 has proved difficult in terms of volunteering, they are hoping to keep community spirit alive and well as we enter the new year.

CEO Kevin Rogers said: “Giving back to the community is at the heart of everything we do at Paycare, and while volunteering has been tricky with the Covid-19 restrictions in place for much of the year, we have done our best to help out where we can. We have continued supporting causes we had existing links with, and reached out to other charities who were particularly in need of help during the pandemic.”

The team wore purple for International Women’s Day (just before the first lockdown) in aid of The Haven – as well as continuing

their sponsorship of the charity’s domestic abuse live chat.

They fought to reduce period poverty by distributing sanitary products intended for the Molineux toilets to local charities while the stadium was closed to fans, donated food parcels to organisations such as The Good Shepherd, won the Beacon Centre’s Corporate Volunteer of the Year Award, and launched a public vote to share out £3,000 between three exceptionally deserving charities.

Paycare has continued its sponsorship of various community and professional sports teams, including Motherwell FC, Bilston Town Football Club kit, and Darlaston Town (1874) FC. And they also supported good causes over Christmas with donations to food banks and charities, sponsorship of five hampers sent

to their care home customers, and sponsorship of a day in the Compton Care Advent Calendar.

Kevin added: “I’d love to remind everyone that it’s not just about giving money – supporting the community can be something as simple as supporting a small local business, doing some shopping for an elderly neighbour, phoning vulnerable residents for a chat, or offering whatever skills you have – for example if you have business experience that might be useful to a charity.

“A huge thank you to our Policyholders, Partners and of course the Paycare team for their unwavering support of our community work – we are hoping restrictions will ease in 2021 and we can get back out there and continue giving our time to the causes dear to our hearts.”

CO-WORKING SPACE SET TO LAuNCH

IN WOLVERHAMPTON A co-working space for small businesses and freelancers is set to launch in Wolverhampton in the new year.

Wolverhampton Cricket Club is offering office and meeting rooms at its Tettenhall base after joining forces with The Wheelhouse – an innovative team already running multiple locations across the country.

There will be 14 desk spaces and 2 meeting rooms – all compliant with current Covid restrictions available to book by members who sign up to join The Wheelhouse.

The project has been part-funded

by Paycare – who have sponsored the club for the past two years – in order to benefit the many employees unable to use their normal working locations, as well as start-ups looking for an affordable space to work and network with other companies in the region.

Mike Elphick, Chairman of Wolverhampton Cricket Club, said with experience of running a Covidsafe environment during the summer cricket season and limited uses mid-week, the club was the ideal venue to host the new space.

“It’s ideal for those living nearby who don’t want to travel into Birmingham or other locations anymore – they can simply come to Tettenhall, reduce their commute time and park for free. It’s a unique business venue and of course there’s lot of outdoor space which people can enjoy on their breaks too.”

Alex Lloyd Davies, Managing Director of The Wheelhouse, said they wanted to help small

businesses, freelancers and entrepreneurs flourish.

“We do this by providing local, friendly coworking and meeting rooms around the UK, often in partnership with community groups. So, we are thrilled to be partnering with Wolverhampton Cricket Club.”

will offer three driving modes: Advanced (which uses electric power for as long as possible), Dual Power (which makes the most of both sources to serve up optimum performance) and Natural (which keeps fuel economy in mind) - whereas for many it’ll be purely and simply about how it looks. After all, when isn’t it when it comes to Alfa?

One marque that can never be accused of lagging behind in that department is Jaguar: and in the case of forthcoming E-Pace update, things are no different. Jaguar’s smallest SUV only went on sale in 2018, so this is a very early update. However, improved safety and driver assistance systems will be the main focus, as well as a few visual

changes to bring it into line with the recently refreshed XE saloon and F Type.

Lots more connectivity is promised – most of which will run through an intuitive new Pivi Pro infotainment system – and a few Plug-in and mild Hybrid engines too. A new three cylinder petrol PHEV will offer an all-electric range of over 30 miles and will be able to charge from 0-80 percent in around 30 minutes.

Another useful feature of the E-Pace will be its occupant wellbeing system, which filters ultrafine particles and allergens to give improved cabin air quality. Prices will start at around £33,000 when it goes on sale early in the year.

Maybe It’s Really SAD Over two million people in the UK are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The low levels of light during the winter months can cause a range of symptoms, from slowing down and lacking energy right through to severe depression. Other symptoms include feeling gloomy, lethargic and experiencing feelings of being unable to carry out our normal routine.

Light therapy in the form of a lightbox has been shown to be helpful for many sufferers, but any exposure to light will help: a lunchtime walk or sitting near a window when indoors.

It’s Not All About You Our social lives have been considerably curtailed since March 2020 but contact with other people is so important.

When you are feeling down, you might feel you don’t want to bother your friends and family.

But imagine if they asked to speak to you? You’d be unlikely to say no, so flip that on its head and remember that they are likely to be glad to hear from you too!

Video calls are a real blessing for distanced interactions, but even just a phone call will cheer you.

Even better, instead of a phone call, a short walk around the block for an in-person catch-up is likely to find conversation flowing more

Reading about ‘the blues’ can help as it’ll reassure you that you aren’t on your own. Seeing a post on a user forum from someone with a similar problem and reading the encouraging and sympathetic replies will be a comfort to you.

“A problem shared is a problem halved” as the saying goes.

On the other hand, if the news depresses you and social media makes you feel like everyone else is living their best life, switch it off. When someone boasts about how amazing their life is right now, it’s really not going to cheer you up.

Summer’s Coming OK, admittedly that’s stretching it a bit in January. But each day has been getting a few minutes longer since the 21st December so there is – literally – light at the end of the tunnel.
