The Role of the Mind in Autoimmune Diseases

Furthermore, most of these diseases can be treated, but there is no cure. There are several hypotheses on the subject, but none of them has been 100% verified. What is known with certainty, however, is that the mind plays an important role when dealing with these pathologies. There are quite common autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. Others, however, are less common, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, chronic autoimmune thyroiditis or Guillain-BarrĂŠ syndrome. The most puzzling feature of autoimmune diseases is that they are the result of an attack of the body against itself. The organism behaves as if its antigens were invading viruses and, therefore, attacks them. In other words, it is a malfunction of the system that recognizes what is proper to the organism and what is foreign to it. This happens in people who are perfectly healthy, and the medicine still cannot explain why. The mind and autoimmune diseases: what happens in the person? The mechanism of autoimmune diseases could be explained, in a very simplistic way, as a struggle of the body against itself, like triggering a time bomb against one's own person. Obviously, there is no conscious will, and it is also true that we do not yet know exactly the physiological mechanism that leads to that direction, nor the procedure that leads to a controllable or degenerative state.
