Dear reader,

My name is Jonathan Chamblee, and I am currently a 4th year at Virginia Tech in pursuit of a Bachelors of Architecture.

Architecture has been the thing I wanted to do for almost as long as I can remember, and I consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to explore it in the capacity that I do.

In my time at Virginia Tech I have devoted myself to being a diligent student, while trying to set myself apart as one of the best designers in the program, aiming to combine this rigor with unique experiences to create a well rounded and diverse education.

My experiences in the professional world, at Hanbury in particular, have also shaped my efforts, honing my technical skills while teaching me to navigate the inner workings of a firm and the nuances of client relations.

These experiences have allowed me to begin to develop an understanding of what architecture should be: technically proficient and conceptually imaginative as a bare minimum, striving further to ask questions of the world it inhabits, and finding answers therein. This is what I hope is the central essence of the projects displayed here, constituting each move made within. I hope you enjoy.

Jonathan Chamblee | Work Sample Existing at the intersection of privacy, nature, and light, this mental health focused community center seeks to create a place that is both architecturally sincere and participatory in the mental healing process. Taking advantage of a picturesque site, the building is wrapped by a green facade, negotiating between the architecture and the site in plan, while providing privacy, unique lighting conditions, and a inert connection to nature in section as it screens the buildings apertures. In this way, the design is all about the celebration of the threshold: leveraging to the fullest the boundary between site and building, inside and out. These moments ought to be lived in and experienced.

Fall 2023 | Thresholds Starting in section, the driving idea behind the building attempts to unite the privacy required by a mental health institution and the health benefits of daylighting and biophilia. A green facade wraps the building, providing privacy while also creating unique shadows and a connection to nature.

Moving into plan, the design began to explore how a multilayered facade could create interesting spaces. Purposeful interaction is made between the rigid building face and the free green facade, creating inhabitable places in between.

The green facade is able to be free, in comparison to the orthogonal building, moving both inside and out

Returning again to section, both the building and the vegetated wall begin to react to each other to create a richness of space in three dimensions.

The green facade takes on the role of negotiator between the trees and the building, being both man made and organic. It is the threshold between the two.

Both facades are able to be dynamic in section, with the vegetated wall bridging the gap between existing and constructed

Both of these main outdoor spaces are also feed from the indoors, with key programmatic elements opening into these areas, giving them life.

The building is imagined as a solid volume, in order to contrast the semi- transparent post and wire vegetated wall wrapping it. This move goes from massing to detail. At the largest scale, the CLT supported roof appears to float above the building, a ribbon of clerestories below it. At the smallest scale, the exterior wood siding turns inward at the edges of large openings and beneath the clerestory, making the building appear as a large wooden box, with holes poked into it.

Early design included programmatic adjacency explorations, working in conjunction with sketch charrettes to find a driving idea

Composite columns appear as a motif throughout the building, freestanding in the interior and embedded in the exterior walls, wrapping the building and supporting the green facade. In order to allow for the green facade to be free in contrast to the building, these exterior columns pull apart, stretching away from the buildings walls to varying degrees. Eventually, they pull away entirely, becoming separate from the wall.

The lower level contains a garden to the south, creating an interstitial space between the building and the trees. This space is partitioned by the green facade, weaving in and out between water channels, reflecting pools, walking paths, and sitting areas. It is here that the composite column, partially embedded into the exterior wall as a typical condition, is revealed as the siding turns in to allow for punctured openings.

An ideal lighting condition was the driving idea for the building, and followed through all the way to the wall section. Steel cables span between the columns, creating semi random patterns for the vines of the green facade to grow on. Light diffuses through the leaves, into the therapy rooms, creating unique shadow patterns while providing privacy. A set of louvers are also installed on the therapy room windows, allowing in light, but giving extra privacy for the winter when the leaves may have fallen away.

Located in the historic downtown of Staunton, Virginia, this library locates itself in the center of the block cornering Augusta Street and Beverly Street, the towns main thoroughfare. By building on the rear parking lot and drive-through of an unoccupied bank, the library is able to position itself centrally to the town, making use of limited space efficiently.

This unique position in the center of the block provides a couple of opportunities. The building is able to reach through the block, pulling from the east and west, by creating a garden space around the banks drive-through windows, recognizing the sites past.

The northern end of the library, nestled against the existing building on Beverly street, contains much of the program, including restrooms, study and conference rooms, and printing areas. Central to this is a fire stair, wrapped in an atrium, brining light deep into the building where no windows are able to reach.

To the south, a open lobby dominates on the ground floor, with reading spaces suspend above in one continuous vertical space. The floor of the lobby, glazed brick meant to cast the southern light upward, turns up to become the central dividing wall between the north and south ends of the building, taking inspiration from Zaha Hadid’s Cincinnati Center for Contemporary Art.

Jonathan Chamblee | Work Sample Early on in the design process, the idea emerged to have the edges of an exposed structural concrete system act as shelfs for adjacent levels. Originally, the hope was to use a standard waffle slab, rotating the form work 90 degrees at the ends to form shelves, and thus achieving a type of poetry in how the form work was used. The same mold could fulfill the multiple needs of the structure through the simple act of being turned sideways. This changes the scale of the coffering as well, acting on the building scale through the structural support it offers, and on the human scale, through the books it holds.

Eventually it was decided that a one way coffered slab would be more efficient with the geometry of the building. Given the smaller scale of the building and dimensional ratios of standard slab form work, it was also decided that custom form work would make up for its extra cost in its ability to tailor specifically to the needs of the building.

With this in mind, it was thought that the form work should be then both highly function and beautiful. The final shape settled on still fulfills both needs of the coffered slab. It is pleasing to look at from underneath, and offers a place to mount an intermediary shelf, consistent in cross section despite the organic, flowing shape.

This sketch, made during the competition’s initial presentation, encapsulates the main goal of the eventual building: a design that interacts with its occupants in a way that influences how they view the wide breadth of pieces on display.

The main gesture of the building became a curved wall through the exhibition space. This wall pushes visitors closer to smaller pieces in the exhibit, while giving room to back up and appreciate the larger works.

The site for this building, located in a large thoroughfare on the east end of campus, proves particularly difficult. Any successful intervention must take into account the heavy foot traffic in the area, between two major points on campus, and be certain to not interrupt it.

This provides a unique opportunity to utilize the pedestrian traffic to promote the IAWA through the exhibition space, by engaging those passing by.

The exhibition space on the north end contains openings on either side to allow circulation through the exhibit, parallel to the sidewalk. The documents would be located on the northern wall of the space, between thin windows spanning the full height.

The central wall of art work acts as a line of symmetry through the site, with the exhibit on one side and the outdoor walkway on the other. In this way, the exhibit does not interfere with pedestrian traffic, but harnesses it.

Pedestrians are able to see into the building, viewing those inside. This generates a natural curiosity, putting the artifacts on display through the people viewing them, in a way that keeps the documents from being damaged by any direct sunlight.

Building Section - the rhythm of the columns, independent of the envlope and stream, establish the spectating area as one space

This 1500 SQFT music performance hall sits on a small green space on the north east end of Virginia Techs campus. Through this small site runs a stream, which exposes itself briefly before running underground all the way to the duck pond on the west side of campus. This stream, surrounded by brush and trees, gives character to the site, and was intended to remain the focal point of the proposed building.

The design for the music hall attempts to bridge the stream, using it to create the divide between the indoor and outdoor spectating areas. The whole project quickly became interested implying this divide created by the stream, while maintaining the continuity of the spectating areas.

The program of the building is split between two wings; the performance space sitting to the east and the service elements to the west.

This separation is made clear in how the building is sited geometrically, making the two wings evident.

The challenge then lies in making sure the building appears to be split between these two wings, despite the indoor outdoor divide occuring on the stream. The entirety of the performance side must remain coherent while still enveloping the stream. Three methods are employed to this end: a) rhythm, b) tectonic hierarchy and c) material differentiation 37

Materiality serves to unite the spectating area, by juxtaposing it to the programmatic side. This differentiation, already implied by the geometry of the buildings, is reinforced through the material choices on the two ends. The eastern performance wing is made up of heavy timber posts and beams, with light glass infill, while the western programmatic wing is made primarily of cast in place concrete.

The meeting of these two wings showcases this juxtaposition to anyone visiting the building.

The wood and the concrete never touch, but instead allow for light to enter from a clerestory window. This small detail makes the two wings appear almost like two separate buildings.

As the steps of the outdoor seating area are submerged, the motif of rhythm reappears, negotiating between the rhythms set by the columns and pivot doors.

An existing drainage pipe is rerouted to give acoustical presence to the stream. The sound is dynamic, dependent on the level of the water. At different levels, the falling water strikes either water on concrete.
