JFS Celebrates 85 Years

In October 2021, JFS welcomed over 100 guests to the iconic Heritage Hall to celebrate 85 years in the community. It was a meaningful evening for honourary guest, Shirley Barnett – JFS Lifetime Achievement Award winner, former JFS Board Member, past President and Executive Director, community leader, and philanthropist. Throughout her tenure in various leadership roles, Shirley displayed wisdom and depth of service.

“Shirley initiated a number of new programs. She significantly expanded our capacity to serve the community and substantially upgraded our fundraising capacity. She has and continues to make a profound difference for our agency,” remarks Tanja Demajo, JFS CEO.

The evening also welcomed Karen Malone, Founder of LitPark and ESG leader, who shone a light on JFS’s resiliency and sustainability, especially during the pandemic. “JFS is an agency that has led by example,” said Malone. In the beginning, founded at the height of the Great Depression and during the rise of Nazism, JFS helped so many of those fleeing Europe to re-root and start a new life. Eight decades later, JFS has persevered, continuing to be a place people can turn to in their time of need. Having proven itself resilient and responsive, JFS stands strong today, and that is worthy cause for celebration.
