Leadership Message
75 years ago, in response to the atrocities of the Second World War, global leadership developed a Universal Declaration of human rights. It was a map that was intended to be the foundation for peace, justice, and freedom.
From the perspective of a social service agency, 2021/22 was a story of the world often turning a blind eye to the values of that declaration; a year filled with instability and inequality. As we stood on the front line with over 3,000 people, we watched as those same people suffered through injustices and struggled to make ends meet. However, just as the most beautiful flower can blossom in adversity, our community’s commitment, hope, and partnerships showed us how to practice Tikkun Olam and stay true to our values.

Over 500 staff and volunteers worked tirelessly toward building a safe space and equitable systems to support the most vulnerable in our community as they found their voice and accessed needed services. While many of the challenges of a post-pandemic reality were outside our control, nevertheless, we had the responsibility to consider our role as a leader in the community, assess the way we provide services, and be the change we wanted to see.
Many days were hard and challenged us to search for meaning in small things. The opportunity to watch the smiles on children’s faces while sharing a meal prepared at the Kitchen, receive gratitude from a woman who could safely stay in ASTEH for a year, or hear the relief of a Ukrainian family who now had access to basic needs allowed us to get through the hard days. It was in those moments that we continued to be inspired to uplift lives and repair the world.
Each of the moments we cherish are the result of your leadership and willingness to step forward and ask "How can I help?" In your actions, we saw the gestures of community care, passion, and love. In your actions, we saw the future – the future of human connection and strong community.
As Rabbi Sacks said, “The most important forms of leadership come not with position, title or robes of office, not with prestige and power, but with the willingness to work with others to achieve what we cannot do alone…” Yes, he spoke about all of you! Our goals would only be dreams without your support. Todah
Rabah!
