Participants in this year's Westerville Relay For Life will not only be raising money to help find a cure for cancer, but also providing empirical evidence for the study of the disease.
FEATURES The 18-hour event is scheduled for June 26-27. Volunteers will be registered during the relay for the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). American Cancer Society spokesman Alex Toomey said the study is intended to definitively name some of the causes of cancer.

"This is a lifestyle study -- volunteers will fill out a survey, have their waistline measured and have a small amount of blood drawn," Toomey said. "Then (the American Cancer Society) will follow up with them every couple of years to ask about their lifestyles, the different factors in their environment, and through that, we can tell on a societal level the different trends that are developing in cancer research."

Toomey said past studies have found a direct link between smoking, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle to cancer.

"Becoming involved in Relay helped me to feel like I was doing something, but CPS-3 will truly involve me in the fight," said Deb Pindell, Westerville chairwoman for the study. "I will now be able to participate in research that will make a difference in the future of cancer prevention and treatment."
Food and Wine
The theme for the 11th annual Westerville Relay For Life will be "Re-Lei for Life: Island of Hope," according to event co-chairwoman Kim Wolfinger.

"We will have a Hawaiian theme this year. We'll be passing out leis throughout the evening, we'll be having a grass skirt lap on the track, and the survivor dinner this year will be a luau," Wolfinger said. "It's going to be a good time, a lot of fun."

Wolfinger said the Relay For Life will also include the second annual car show on Saturday, with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. Awards will be presented at noon. No pre-registration is needed for the car show, she said; visitors can vote on the cars by giving donations, and awards will be given out based on how much money each car raises. Wolfinger said about 30 teams have registered for this year's event so far. Team registration is still available for the Westerville Relay For Life; registration can be found online at www.relayforlife.org/westerville.
