Corporate teams boost Relay for Life * The Westerville Relay starts with a Survivor Lap at 6 p.m. Friday, June 24 at Westerville Central High School. Published: Wednesday, June 22, 2011 8:07 AM EDT Text Size
Corporate partnerships are helping Westerville fight cancer. The city's 13th annual Relay for Life w ill add to the more than $1 million raised since 1989 on Friday and Saturday, June 24-25 at Westerville Central High School. So far 25 teams have raised more than $25,000 this year. Last year's leading team w as Excel Inc. w hich raised $25,000 -- half through employee contributions and half through a company match -- is hoping for a bigger year in 2011. "As a socially responsible organization, Exel Inc. recognizes the importance of giving back to the community," said Stacie Noel, communications and community involvement manager, in a press release. "The Relay for Life of Westerville is not only a great charity, but the event also provides an opportunity for team building and family involvement." Exel Inc. employees raised money through a variety of means this year including w earing jeans during designated w eeks if they made a $10 contribution and selling homemade cupcakes. "Our teams are so creative in developing w ays to raise money," said Amanda Fannin, American Cancer Society Income representative. "Corporate support amplifies those efforts, and its impact is speaking volumes." Other corporate teams at this w eekend's Westerville Relay include OhioHealth, City Barbeque, Giant Eagle, Kroger, Jackson National Life Insurance Co., Excel Martial Arts and Fitness and Linden Eagles Aerie No. 2252. The Relay For Life of Westerville is part of a nationw ide effort to permanently defeat cancer as w ell as honor survivors, caregivers and families. The event is an overnight 18-hour relay w hich symbolizes the "around-the-clock battle against the deadly disease." All funds go to the American Cancer Society's research, programs and services for cancer survivors, caregivers and families. The 2011 Relay For Life of Westerville begins at 6 p.m. Friday, June 24 w ith a Survivor Lap that honors cancer survivors on the Westerville Central High School track, 7118 Mount Royal Ave. A Survivor Reception immediately follow s in the school's commons. Any cancer survivor in the community and a guest are w elcome to attend at no cost. Additional guests can attend w ith a $5 donation. Dinner participants are asked to RSVP to Curt Jackow ski at 614-638-4427, or jackow sc@w csoh.org. Fundraising activities for Friday evening w ill include a scavenger hunt, Kate Middleton hat lap, cake-eating contest and balloon toss. A luminaria ceremony w ill be held Friday evening.
