STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: MEGHAN KINNEY Many students strive to receive an acceptance letter to a Mayo Clinic externship program. There are several application steps that a student must go through before receiving such an amazing opportunity. Students are required to submit two essays, a faculty recommendation, transcript, resume and cover letter. The Mayo Clinic (Minnesota) selected 111 students out of 1,000 applicants to work as an extern. ASU Nursing student, Meghan Kinney, a Barrett Honors Student, was chosen as one of the 100+ students! Meghan will work for 10 weeks from June to August with preceptors to provide direct patient care. Meghan dreams of becoming an OB nurse. She hopes that her externship placement will allow her to learn more about this chosen specialty. While out of state externships are appealing and will provide amazing experiences, there are also a variety of externships and internships within the Phoenix valley. Many nursing students do not take advantage of these. Be sure to seek out opportunities that may be available to where you are in the program! One professional step for any nursing student to remember is to stay involved on campus; whether it is Student Nurses Association, College Council of Nursing Student or Active Minds, students are encouraged to stay engaged with their nursing community. We are very excited for Meghan and we know that she will learn a variety of new skills both clinically and professionally while at Mayo. We hope she shares her stories with us when she returns for her last semester in the fall.
