Welcome “Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s Party!” – Robin Williams

Spring has finally sprung! I love spring in the Washington, DC, area – it is simply spectacular. It’s not just about the blooms and the weather. It’s about everyone shaking off the collective shell of winter. Emerging to enjoy outside patio dining. Taking much more enjoyable walks in longer days. Relaxing with a glass of wine on an outdoor terrace on a (still) sunny evening. It just makes us feel better! In this issue of John Eric Home, we explore the spring and its activities. Sherry Moeller has written an amazing piece on outdoor living to get us in tune with the season. Our ‘Stylist’ section features spring fashion while our ‘Mixology’ section offers recipes for great spring drinks. ‘Diplomacy’ high-lights diplomatic events to enjoy this season – including an embassy walk. To celebrate the newness of spring, we have redesigned some of our magazine’s features. In this issue, we are launching our newly inspired Interior Spotlight feature. Over the course of our next six issues, we will be hosting Q&A sessions with the Washington area’s hottest designers. We begin the series with Keira St. Claire. It’s something that you don’t want to miss! Also, in our ‘Foodie’ section, we are blasting back to the past and re-printing some of our “chef features” that readers enjoyed the most. This issue, we begin with Green Pig Bistro. I hope that you make the most of this season and enjoy these reads in the magazine!

HOME TRENDS WHERE STYLE & ELEGANCE MEET

STATUS

CANDLES LIGHT UP As we spend more time at home, the popularity of home goods continues unabated with one product in particular emerging as an unlikely status symbol: candles. A product as old as time, the humble candle has taken on a new meaning in a shifting social media landscape that places more value on curation and aesthetics than on glitz and extravagance. In Scandinavia, lighting candles— especially during autumn and winter—is associated with hygge, or coziness. Being

11

able to do it in an even more stylish way adds to the popularity of the candles. When you combine that with the luxurious feeling of lighting an expensive candle to relax and enjoy at home, it makes them a status symbol. Few things rival a candle’s ability to create a memorable, personal, and relaxing environment. Over the last year, our needs have changed – no longer is there a need for expensive lipstick that no one will see under our face masks, and designer handbags remain tucked away in our closets. A $68 candle may feel like a luxury, however, it is far less expensive than your next designer handbag purchase. It’s also much easier to buy a candle than replace furniture or refinish your floors. Ultimately, what we all crave is a little bit of comfort, lingering to our memories and looking for something new among our daily grind of the

12

JOHN ERIC HOME

new normal. Whether it be a familiar smell of vanilla or a luxury scent of bergamot, a simple candle can transport – bringing us to that destination we miss or bringing us back to memories of family. Many of us have replaced our commutes with inhome offices and Zoom calls allow us to peek inside each other’s homes more than ever. In the interior design world, a candle can be compared to a sculpture or a piece of art within the home. They are also similar to the art on the walls, styled bookshelves, or coffee table books in a room – the interior can reveal so much about a person. A candle is a simple way to create ambiance and atmosphere in any space. As people spend more time within the interiors of their homes, it makes sense that they reach towards more comforting home accessories. A combination of the pleasant scents and

lighting will make your home intimate and inviting. You can place these candles in different areas such as your desk, coffee or side tables and even your mantle. From French classics like Diptyque and Cire Trudon to contemporary superstars like Byredo and Boy Smells, candles have gone from a nice-to-have to a must-have as people seek tools for setting a mood and making home feel more comfortable. The millions of people who watched Meghan Markle marry Prince Harry couldn’t smell the royal wedding. Had we been there, we would have experienced the distinct aroma of many Diptyque candles. Providing the Royal Wedding candle only confirmed what we know about Diptyque — it’s the Status Candle. It’s now iconic oval logo with dancing letters hasn’t changed in the nearly 60 years it’s been in production. The launch and growth of social media have now opened the brand to a wider community and it is truly the most recognizable status candle. In the realm of luxurious candles, few beat Cire Trudon. These French candles have a mix of oldworld aromas (burning bushes, floral leather) and newfangled ones (mimosas). The candle brand Cire Trudon provides a wonderful illustration of how an extensive history is transformed into a rich heritage and creation of myth and meaning that the acquirer of these luxury candles can take home. It all started with Claude Trudon who moved to Paris in 1643. He opened a successful grocery store on Rue St. Honore and supplied his candles to his customers. Known as a keen marketer and brand builder, he also applied and was selected to harvest the royal hives for the nest wax. He quickly became the official candle supplier of

many churches and the court of Louis XIV at Versailles. For generations the Trudon family members continuously sold Cire Trudon (Trudon Wax) candles. The brand history offers many myths along the way. It is even said that Napoleon’s single gift to his newborn son was a Trudon and that it was the last thing he wanted to smell before dying in exile. In the new millennium, this understated sleepy brand was transformed by the masterful touch of French – Moroccan Ramadane Touhami. Known as a “renaissance man”, brand artist, designer, skate board enthusiast, journalist and DJ – Touhami partnered with Olivier Blondeau to co-own, revive and reinterpret this historical brand. He formulated 22 new fragranced candles related to the candle makers past. As scent preferences shift away from flowery perfumes toward more earthy and as a mini-boom in candle-making grows in the United States, there are now new status candles on the horizon. Boy Smells is a two-year-old brand out of Los Angeles. It is a small company where its two founders, a couple, started mixing the candles in their home. The brand is extremely newguard. The pale pink label and perfect font is recognizable and definitely a façade for the quirky and odd scents for which they are named. Regardless, these candles smell really good in unassuming ways. Many people are also embracing Le Feu de L’Eau. This luxuriously crunchy candle line is recognized by its brightly colored vessels that resemble tie-dyed tree trunks. The colors are coded to the scents (bright blue is night-blooming jasmine; yellow is grapefruit and lemon) and the vessels can be repurposed as planters or cups. It’s a small company, with two women at the helm, and all the candles get

13

hand-poured and sculpted underwater. Le Feu de L’Eau’s candles cost $65, but they’re also big, coming in 12 and 13 ounce sizes (which are twice that of Diptyque’s candles). Another up-and-coming brand is Otherland. Founded by former Ralph Lauren staffer Abigail Cook Stone, the idea for Otherland was born out of a desire for a sophisticated candle that wouldn’t break the bank. Otherland’s candles have quickly become a Millennial favorite and are sold direct through its web site, or on retailer accounts like Nordstrom. Overrose candles combine luxury scent with sustainability — founder Matthieu Belhandouz worked briefly for Stella McCartney. The brand is said to follow a strict sourcing policy when it comes to ingredients, using only organic and natural oils. At $58 to $68 each, its candle prices rival that of Diptyque, but vessels in an array of bright and holographic colors serve as a differentiator. Another Parisian import, Maison Louis Marie is a six-year-old brand quickly

14

JOHN ERIC HOME

gaining traction in the U.S. for its affordable scents —$34 for a candle — and use of clean, botanical ingredients. The brand is sold online at Sephora. For centuries candles were little more than a mold of fat with a cotton or reed wick. Originally used as a source of light, they soon became a staple in ceremony and celebration in various cultures. Today in the modern era, they have trickled into the realm of home and now cemented themselves as a lifestyle object. Status candles are a maker of luxury living and self-care. Whether you are giving a gift to someone else or looking for a special status touch in your home – scented candles never disappoint.

OUTDOOR LIVING AT ITS 3 Outside Spaces Provide Plenty of Inspiration

Best By Sherry Moeller

While outdoor living has always been on trend, it has become an even bigger request by homeowners as they look for places to socially distance and still enjoy time together with family and friends. These three outside spaces showcase ways to enjoy the warm weather ahead, while staying at home.

ANTHONY WILDER DESIGN/ BUILD CREATES CUSTOM PAVILION TO PROTECT ANTIQUE JOGLO PHOTOS BY JOHN COLE

When Anthony Wilder, founder of Anthony Wilder Design/Build, and his team - Architect Sean Mullin and Master Craftsman Mark Masser of WilderWorks - got together to collaborate on the design of a pavilion to encase a joglo for a Virginia family, the magic happened. “This space is an immediate mood changer,” says Wilder. The idea first came about when the homeowners found and purchased an ancient joglo at Arhaus and called on Wilder and team to figure out how to install it in their yard, while also protecting the carvings, sweeping roofs, and intricate details. “We were fortunate to have a long-term client ask us to reconstruct this 500-year-old joglo at his home,” adds Wilder. The joglo, which includes thousands of pieces of wood, had to be disassembled to transport to the house and then reassembled by the Wilder team, taking longer than expected due to the number of pieces and the incorrect assembly by a previous vendor. The yard had to be leveled before beginning to build the pavilion, which includes steel columns, natural cedar roof, teak flooring, cedar barn doors, Moroccan-style lighting, and seating area that not only protects the joglo, but also enhances it. Reflective black beach pebbles create a moat around it, while landscape 18

lighting illuminates the entire space, which has a Japanese teahouse look. The Zen pavilion complements its natural surroundings and is used often, almost four seasons by the owners. “Our design/build team lived and breathed this magnificent, hand-carved joglo while working on this project,” Wilder says. “It was an amazing experience for all of us.”

GTM ARCHITECTS INFUSES MODERN ARCHITECTURE INTO THE OUTDOOR SETTING PHOTOS BY ANGIE SECKINGER Wanting a resort feel to their new custom home in Maryland, the owners worked with a team of talented designers to touch every aspect of its design, from top to bottom both inside and out. George Myers and Mark Kaufman of GTM Architects collaborated closely with interior designer Sophie Prevost of ColePrevost, Joel Hafner of Fine Earth Landscapes, and Phil Leibovitz of Sandy Spring Builders to create a home where the owners feel like they’re on vacation. Aqua blues, crisp whites and a touch of silver infiltrate the interior color scheme that centers around comfort, flowing into the outdoor setting. Jeld-Wen folding doors open from the family room to a porch with retractable screens and then to the outside seating, pool and patio, making that perfect transition from inside to out. Designed by Kaufman and Hafner, the entire outdoor space features cast-stone pavers and faux turf. The pool by Crystal Pools includes a swim-up bar adjoining a sunken outdoor kitchen, while the backyard oasis is furnished with Richard Schultz chaises and a B&B Italia sofa. Paradise awaits the owners every day from the comforts of home.

RILL ARCHITECTS COMPLEMENTS ENGLISH GARDENS WITH PATIO AND PAVILION DESIGNS PHOTOS BY LYDIA CUTTER By lending her classic English sensibilities to the more than two-acre Maryland property, the homeowner had already created lush gardens around the saltwater pool in the back yard. But when a tree fell and provided space for something new, the owners reached out to Jim Rill of Rill Architects to design a spot to enjoy the established English gardens. The result is a pavilion, centered on the pool, with classic columns, skylight and exposed pergola. Called “temples” in England, this pavilion, which offers shaded or sunny seating, includes a freestanding stone chimney that extends the structure’s use. Rill also enhanced the view of the garden from the kitchen with French doors that open to a covered porch and large stone terrace. A latticed breezeway provides access from the garage to the house, creating a strong flow between the landscape and buildings. A stone bridge over a small stream adds another charming element to this backyard oasis. Whether designing indoor or outdoor spaces, Rill Architects’ design aesthetic is naturesque bringing nature into the house and the house out into the natural environment. “We never forget that we, as architects, are just visitors to the home and site,” Rill says, “while our clients are the ones who will be living there.”

CASE ARCHITECTS & REMODELERS RELAUNCHES ONLINE DIY BATHROOM DESIGN SERVICE – IBBY.COM by Sherry Moeller Renderings from ibby.com

With the demand for home renovations increasing dramatically due to the pandemic, Case Architects & Remodelers relaunched its DIY online design service known as ibby (inspiration built by you), providing homeowners an easier path to professionally remodel their own bathroom spaces.

The reality of any bathroom remodel—whether

it’s simple cosmetic updates or a complete redo—is the majority of time spent measuring, reviewing and analyzing materials, products and finishes, which can be overwhelming to those who aren’t professional designers.

By utilizing ibby.com, bathroom remodels become more

streamlined and approachable, allowing you, the consumer, to review designer-curated palettes that are preselected based on your bathroom project’s needs and your personal tastes.

Another bonus, the service costs on average about 20%

less than a typical renovation project, as the remodel itself is staying within an existing bathroom space where plumbing fixtures and finishes are replaced versus relocating an entire bathroom and having to reinstall hookups in a new location.

With ibby, bathroom redesign can be done from

the comfort of home and reduce overall contact with contractors and remodelers. Once you submit your design, an ibby consultant from Case Architects & Remodelers will reach out to confirm your selections. Installation takes about two weeks. To put that in perspective, Case’s standard remodeling process could take one month just to confirm a space’s layout, design and materials alone.

With design studios in Bethesda, MD, Washington, DC,

Falls Church, VA and Alexandria, VA, Case Architects & Remodelers is offering ibby installations in select zip codes; however, the design examples are available to anyone to review as preparation for a bathroom remodel.

SPRINGTrails

28

JOHN ERIC HOME

Spring is here and it’s time to hit the trail! Well, walking trail that is, and the Washington area has some of the best to offer. If you are up for tying your shoes and venturing into the great outdoors – so welcomed after this past winter – make sure to hit one of these paths… Mount Vernon Trail Arlington, VA Trail Length: 18 miles total Although it is not a “wilderness” trail, the Mount Vernon Trail is one of the best hiking trails in the area. This walking, hiking and biking path extends for 18 miles from Mount Vernon all the way to Theodore Roosevelt Island. It’s a perfect spot for families, runners, bikers, and history buffs to enjoy a historic and scenic area for hiking near DC. Of course, the bonus of this trail is in catching some of the amazing views of the DC skyline during your hike. Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Trail Great Falls, MD Trail Length: Varies One of the most popular trails in the DC Metro area is The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Trail. It’s an easy one and runs along the historic C&O canal. It’s also a perfect trail for a forest hike. If you take this trail, make sure to venture by the historic canal boat and the wooden locks that still line the canal. Also, be sure to take the turn onto the Great Falls lookout boardwalk, which brings you to the edge of the Potomac River to a stunning viewpoint of the massive falls. Billy Goat Trail Great Falls, MD Trail Length: 1.5 to 4.5 miles The last hiking trail that we are featuring is the Billy Goat trail – another terrific Great Falls Hike. Only this one is much more challenging. The rock trail runs alongside the Potomac River, right near the Great Falls. The entrance/trailhead starts at the parking lot of the C&O National Historic Park, and you’ll need to walk a bit along the canal before the official entrance itself. Once you are on the trail, you can choose from different sections and trails, each ranging from 1.5-2 miles in length. Once you are on the trail, there is climbing and hopping over the rocky cliffside of the river before getting to the infamous scramble up the side of a cliff. Warning: You will need to use your hands and feet for this hike.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT THE BEST OF THE BEST

KEIRA ST. CLAIRE

Lead designer at Anthony Wilder Design/Build www.anthonywilder.com Q: Can you tell us a little about your professional background? I am a DC native and currently the lead designer of the Anthony Wilder Interiors Studio, www.anthonywilder.com. Early in my career, I worked in the New York fashion world as a freelance photo stylist on high-end fashion publications and catalogues. It helped me refine my skills in composition and translation from request to end product and required a discerning eye for visual composition and attention to detail. I was part of a creative and collaborative team and discovered ways to make objects come to life to create images that evoked feelings. All photos by Angie Seckinger Portrait: Keira St. Claire in an Anthony Wilder Design/Build kitchen Above: This Anthony Wilder Interiors Studio-designed parlor is accented with gold finishes.

Q: What drew you to design? I have a myriad of interests and experiences, but one thing remains constant: I have an unmistakable passion for all things related to art, whether I’m a creator or a consumer. In my quest to discover my own creativity, I studied biology, social anthropology and psychology before majoring in Art History. In my search for what inspires other artists and me, I discovered Interior Design and went on to get a master’s degree in Interior Architecture from George Washington University. Design not only functions for aesthetic appeal, but also has such a strong influence on today’s society. The diversity within the industry presents numerous avenues and specialties within interior design that have allowed me to change and grow throughout my career, especially as a member of the Anthony Wilder team.

31

Q: How do you approach a project? Fueled by the belief that interior design impacts one’s quality of life, Anthony Wilder Interiors Studio’s mission is to create beautiful environments that are elegant and sophisticated, yet welcoming, livable and most importantly, personal. I take the time to get to know my clients’ lifestyles, how they use the spaces in their homes, and look not only to the client’s personal aesthetic, but also to the architecture of the home. Furnishings don’t need to necessarily match the style of the home. For example, just because a home is midcentury in style, if you are drawn to a more traditional look, you can balance materials and furniture selections to complement and enhance the space, effortlessly flowing between the two styles. Q: Of course, listening to your client’s wants and needs is critical to a successful design. But can you tell us a little about your method of incorporating your own personal style into a project? Through interior design, I can create a three-dimensional and interactive piece of art that you can live in. I bring my knowledge of composition, color, appropriate scale, and use of positive and negative and horizontal and vertical spaces to create harmony, balance and interest to each project to ultimately evoke feelings.

Q: What has been the most intense project that you have completed? Earlier in my career, I worked on a 200-room hotel in Canada, including designing amenity spaces, common areas, dining rooms, offices, and adding custom millwork everywhere. It was a huge project with a very tight deadline. Q: What do you consider as your greatest accomplishment? Being a mom to my amazing daughter is greater than I ever imagined. Q: Many do not realize how arduous interior design can be. Can you share some of the challenges in your day-today work? Looking for the perfect piece to bring a design together. I often have ideas for what I want, but find it challenging to find the exact item.

Q: What is your favorite style of design? Eclectic, though I appreciate all styles of design, which makes designing for myself more difficult. I often don’t define a person’s or my design aesthetic into a “style” because inevitably there is something that makes each person’s home different. While we may be influenced by certain styles, a person’s style is ultimately uniquely his or her own.

Q: What is your most favorite aspect of your work? Getting to know my clients and making their homes feel comfortable, functional and beautiful, as well as my collaboration with the Anthony Wilder team. Like photo styling projects, every interior design project is different and I enjoy the challenges each brings. It’s rewarding to help my clients improve their daily lives through designed spaces that reflect their personalities and that they share with loved ones and friends.

Q: What is your most favorite room element and why? I start by looking at the home’s architecture to find the unique elements to work with and challenges to work around. It’s important to layer various textures and shapes with rich textiles and interesting furniture silhouettes to give spaces depth.

Q: Your life is quite busy – but what do you do to relax? Cooking, meditating and being out in nature are my goto relaxation techniques. I spend as much time as I can playing with my four-year-old daughter where we draw, build with Legos, sing, and dance. As soon as it’s safe, I’ll be out at restaurants eating sushi and singing karaoke.

Q: What is the largest project that you have taken on? I have completed several full house interior design projects from the ground up. Working with the Anthony Wilder Design/Build team gives me the opportunity to collaborate with architects, builders and contractors every step of the way, from seeing initial plans to pouring concrete to furnishing homes. It’s one of my greatest pleasure to see a home come to life.

32

Q: What is the smallest project that you have taken on? I’ve designed a breakfast nook bench, created an underthe-steps space for kids, and enhanced rooms with accessories, such as built-ins, pillows and lighting. Small things can make a big impact.

DESTINATIONS LUXURY TRAVEL

Lockdowns are easing and travel is beginning to resume. But it is still complicated to choose the ultimate travel destination to enjoy. In this issue of John Eric Home, we have decided to be very forward thinking. So far forward in fact, that we are taking a trip to a site that – while not accessible now – will undoubtedly become a traveler’s hotspot in the next century. We have put on our futuristic mindcaps and metaphorically strapped ourselves into a pod to hurtle into the great unknown – our ultimate destination? Mars!

They may begin where NASA chose to land the Perseverance rover, Jezero Crater, a spot that will undoubtedly take on much significance over the coming years in terms of both colonizing the planet and learning of its history.

The Jezero Crater is the location that, in February, the NASA Perseverance

rover embarked on its multi-year quest to seek signs of habitability on Mars. Picking the spot was an “exhaustive” process, NASA said in a statement, requiring five years of research examining 60 candidate locations.

NASA determined Jezero was a good location to show how water

periodically appeared and then disappeared on the Martian surface. Scientists believe Mars lost its water because the atmosphere grew too thin. However, it seems that 3.5 billion years ago, Jezero appears to have been a potentially habitable river valley.

Although future sightseers may not be focused on past life on Mars, those

who travel to the Jezero Crater will enjoy red-hued horizons. And sunrises and sunsets. Also, the red, dusty soil that covers the landscape. But, hey, it’s Mars! Safe to assume that no one will complain. It is called the Red Planet for a reason…

Perhaps just before leaving the crater, future visitors will squint their eyes

and try to catch a glimpse of their home planet, Earth. NASA just recently released the first photos of the view of Earth from Mars. Our round rock appears as a bright, bluish light in the Martian sky. Our one moon shines nearby. The rover watched the sun set over Mars and then captured the Earth in the night sky eighty minutes later. It was, and is, an incredible sight.

After enjoying the earthly view, visitors may then travel around the new

planet for adventure. One area of Mars that will be sure to call them is the planet’s South Pole where geysers shoot out small gas and dust eruptions during the Martian “spring thaw.” These geysers are seen as dark spots on photographs of our neighboring planet.

Martian geysers are distinct from geysers on Earth, which are typically

associated with hydrothermal activity. These geysers are unlike any terrestrial geological phenomenon. Their shapes and unusual spider appearance have stimulated a variety of hypotheses about their origin. (They range from differences in frosting reflectance, to explanations involving biological processes.) However, their characteristics, and the process of their formation, are still not completely known.

Perhaps one of the most famous features of Mars is what is called the Olympus Mons. And it would certainly become a tourist destination. Olympus Mons is the most extreme volcano in the solar system. Its located in the Tharsis volcanic region and is roughly the size of the state of Arizona, according to NASA. Its height of 16 miles (25 kilometers) makes it nearly three times the height of Earth’s Mount Everest, which is about 5.5 miles (8.9 km) high.

Olympus Mons was formed after lava slowly crawled down its slopes. This

would mean that the mountain is probably easy for future explorers to climb, as its average slope is only 5 percent. At its summit is a spectacular depression some 53 miles wide, formed by magma chambers that lost lava, likely during an eruption, and collapsed.

Mars not only hosts the largest volcano of the solar system but also the

largest canyon. According to NASA, Valles Marineris is roughly 1850 miles long – four times longer than the Grand Canyon. Researchers aren’t sure how Valles Marineris emerged and developed, but there are several theories about its formation. Many scientists suggest that when another region of Mars -- the Tharsis region -- was formed, it contributed to the growth of Valles Marineris. Lava moving through the volcanic region pushed the crust upward, which broke the crust into fractures in other regions. Over time, these fractures grew into Valles Marineris.

Mars also has its own “ghosts” and future visitors may want to explore

them. As the planet’s water evaporated, its atmosphere thinned. But extensive evidence of past water does exist in the regions called the “ghost dunes” found in the planet’s Noctis Labyrinthus and Hellas basin. Researchers say these regions used to hold dunes that were tens of meters tall. Later, the dunes were flooded by lava or water, which preserved their bases while the tops eroded away. Old dunes such as these illustrate how winds used to flow on ancient Mars, which in turn gives climatologists some hints as to the ancient environment of the Red Planet.

After touring these spots, it would probably be time for the Earthlings

to return home to their Mother Planet. Aside from the advantage of losing an incredible amount of weight – 110 pounds on earth is the equivalent of 38 pounds on the Red Planet – roaming around Mars would be exhausting, even if the Martian gravity field has 62.5% less of a pull and causes less of a strain. Still, all good trips must come to an end. So, strapping themselves back into the rocket ship would be required for their earth-bound journey.

Although the sights and experiences of Mars would be an amazing

experience, surely when future tourists return back to Earth’s terra firma – to its beautiful oceans and lakes, mountains and valleys, bright blue skies and green foliage – they will reiterate what that famed Dorothy spoke, “There’s no place like home.”

FROM THE ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS IN ENGLAND TO THE JARDIM BOTÂNICO IN RIO DE JANEIRO, HERE ARE SOME OF THE TOP BOTANICAL GARDENS ACROSS THE GLOBE. ONCE TRAVEL RESUMES, MAKE SURE TO CALENDAR YOUR TIME TO VISIT ONE OR ALL. ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS | KEW, ENGLAND Kew Gardens may be the most famous botanical park in the world. More than 50,000 plants thrive here due to the climate-controlled Princess of Wales Conservatory. The glasshouse is carved into zones: one is dedicated to carnivorous plants like Venus flytraps; another to dry tropics such as succulents and cactuses; and a third that is humid and tropical enough to grow Victoria Amazonica, the world’s largest water lilies. The property also has a rock garden with a tiered waterfall and an arboretum with 14,000 trees, including giant redwoods and black locusts dating to the 18th century. ARCTIC-ALPINE BOTANICAL GARDEN | TROMSØ, NORWAY The Arctic-Alpine Botanical Garden, the world’s northernmost botanical garden, showcases traditional perennials and herbs from the top of Norway. It also boasts a surprising array of plants from other continents. Part of the University of Tromsø, there are 25 collections in total, specializing in Arctic and Antarctic plants, as well as species native to the Himalayas, South America and Africa. The garden is open year-round and free to visit, but most flowering takes place between May and October. KIRSTENBOSCH NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN | CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA It’s hard to beat a backdrop that includes Table Mountain National Park. Nestled into the eastern slopes of South Africa’s most iconic landmark, this world-renowned garden lives up to its hype: 1,305 acres with more than 7,000 species of plants, most of which are native to the Cape and southern Africa. Located eight miles from the heart of Cape Town, the 107-year-old Kirstenbosch National Botanical offers not only wide arrays of flora but hiking and mountain biking trails, expansive lawns for picnicking, and a 427-foot tree-top walkway that arcs gently above the arboretum’s canopy. JARDIM BOTÂNICO | RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL Rio’s 350-acre Jardim Botânico has built a reputation as one of the finest tropical gardens on the planet. Of its 7,000-plus species of tropical plants, the vast majority are native to Brazil. And though it’s the garden’s Avenue of Royal Palms that surface repeatedly on Instagram, its rare bromeliads and traditional Japanese garden are not to be missed. Note to birders: Bring your binoculars because more than 100 species of fowl are known to shack up in this garden.

DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON Glassware: Chilled Champagne Flute Method: In a chilled champagne flute add first the absinthe and then the chilled champagne. Serve and enjoy! Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Pernod Ricard Absinth Superior 4.5 oz. Chilled GH Mumm Grand Cordon The myth, the legend, the classic – this historic libation was invented by the one and only Ernest Hemmingway. No stranger to cocktails, Hemmingway is the namesake and the creator of many a classic cocktail. However, this one stands out. The champagne is crisp and refreshing, a feathery pairing against the indisputably robust absinthe. The scintillating taste of the anise spirit adds a devilish and playful tone of black liquorice. Yet, the champagne itself is decadent and addictive. The cocktail is a perfect spring drink for 2021. In his own words, Hemmingway states, “Pour one jigger of absinthe into a champagne flute. Add iced champagne until it attains the proper opalescent milkiness. Drink three to five of these slowly.” Unlike the famous author, do drink responsibly. However, make sure to have a little fun in 2021. When ready, order a Death in the Afternoon and enjoy.

57

BOLD PATH Glassware: Highball Glass Method: Build over ice in a highball glass. Use a long spoon to stir until the ingredients are integrated and the glass begins to frost. Garnish, serve, and enjoy! Ingredients: 1 oz. Malfy Rossa Gin 1 oz. Capitoline Tiber .5 oz. Pomegranate Juice 3.5 oz. Mumm Napa Brut Garnish: Mint Sprig and ¼ Grapefruit Slice Champagne is fun and it is bold, which is what makes it a perfect cocktail companion in 2021. The brighter days beckon for a compatriot of comradery that can only be made with a quintessential pick-me-up beverage. Hence, the need for a “Bold Path.” Starting out the springtime special is gin. Light in body and full in flavor, gin has been a tipple of choice for generation upon generation. This particular one is Italian in origin, and flavored with the famous regional taste of Pink Grapefruit. The gin is partnered with Capitoline Tiber, made locally in Washington, DC. The two combine bitter, sweet, floral, and citrus notes to set a foundation made to sparkle. A touch of pomegranate juice adds pure refreshment, as only the warmer weather can call for. Finally, a luxurious California sparkling wine. The historic, yet amazingly affordable Mumm Napa is bright and elegant. Light yet bold, full yet refreshing, boozy yet way too easy to drink…dangerous definitions that make it easy to drink away yesterday. Enjoy the season, enjoy the day, and raise a glass to a Bold Path, and you will surely get where you want to be.

ROYAL DIAMOND Glassware: Chilled Martini Glass Method: Combine all ingredients, except champagne, into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. After a vigorous shake, strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Top with champagne, garnish, serve, and enjoy! Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Jefferson Very Small Batch 1.5 oz. Pineapple Juice .5 oz. Yellow Chartreuse .25 oz. Vanilla Syrup* .25 oz. Lemon Juice 1 oz. Perrier Jouet Grand Brut Garnish: Grilled Pineapple and Skewered Cherry If you want to seize the moment, do it like you mean it and mean it like you are royalty. Taking its name from two classic families of champagne cocktails (the word royal was often used to denote champagne drinks, and the word diamond often referred to a Collins style beverage that used champagne instead of club soda) this beautiful beverage combines the best of both worlds. Starting out with bourbon, the American royalty of spirits, the concoction goes a little crazy, in a good way. Pineapple juice, while a jarring thought at first, is a phenomenal pairing for bourbon. The vanilla, caramel and baking spice from the whiskey make for an incredible accompaniment to the fruit forward pineapple juice. Vanilla syrup adds a little naughty, while the hard citrus in the lemon helps to cut back the confectionary tones. The Chartreuse is the wild card. Dozens upon dozens of herbaceous botanicals jump forward creating a vivacious cocktail. The Perrier Jouet brings everything in harmony. The champagne combines and chills the beverage, accenting and elevating every other flavor in the cocktail. Not every day is going to be perfect, yet some might be. Either which one, live like Your Majesty with a Royal Diamond. *Note: While there are many great recipes on the internet for homemade vanilla syrup, it can also be easily picked up from most grocery stores or online.

MONEY & FINANCE MONEY SENSE

HOW TO DEAL WITH THE

New Normal FINANCIALLY

WRITTEN BY MARC S. SCHLIEFER, CFP® PRESIDENT AND FINANCIAL PLANNER

We are now starting to come out of the lockdown that has caused many businesses to downsize or even close. The economy is starting up again. Restaurants, bars, movie theaters, sporting events, travel, and life as we used to know it, are reopening. After being cooped up for over a year, people are starting to go out again, finally. It truly is a great feeling, but we still need to be cautious as the virus is still looms. Hopefully, with enough people being vaccinated, herd immunity will kick in. Over the last year many people worked remotely from home. This helped fuel the use of technology that was not utilized by most in the past. Zoom meetings and Google Meet meetings have become very common in order to create the face-to-face meetings everyone is so used to. This phenomenon caused the telecommunications and technology stocks to go way up in value to stratospheric valuations. We are not sure if companies like this can continue their pace of growth as people go back to working in offices. If even some continue to work remotely, there may still be some upside growth. But, if the majority return to work at their offices, we could see the use of technology needed for remote work decline and potential growth may not be as favorable. Time will tell over the next year. Where will the next big growth opportunities be? We feel that companies that are in travel and leisure will do very well. Many of the hotel, airline, cruise lines, restaurants and entertainment companies had a very hard time over the last year. Some hotels closed. Others either went bankrupt or are looking for new owners, while others reinvented themselves and became apartment buildings or got out of the hotel industry all together. Over the last year I have watched the airline ticket prices for flights from DC to Ft Lauderdale go from $50 to $250-$500 each way. When the ticket prices were low, the flights had very few passengers and now they are mostly full. As demand increases so do the prices. Hotels are experiencing the same phenomenon. We are seeing the wave in the entire industry. As wealth managers, we recommend that people review their investment portfolio at least every year. Depending on the size of your portfolio and where you are in life, sometimes a quarterly review is more appropriate. Your portfolio may have been very well allocated for the last year with the way the market has gone. With changes in the wings, it may be necessary to change your sector allocation. Based on the way the economy is going, it may be time to reduce exposure to sectors that may not do as well as in the past, and to increase your exposure to sectors that should do well going forward. Your investment portfolio should change with the economy, while staying in tune with your risk tolerance. If you are younger and have a long time until you need the money you can be riskier or, if you are close to or in retirement, you most likely will need to be more conservative. Bonds, one tool that has been used to minimize risk in the past, may actually be creating more risk now in this

rising interest rate environment. Therefore, you may want to reduce your bond exposure. Bond values drop as interest rates rise and bond values increase as interest rates fall. Since we are in a falling interest rate environment, having bonds may be adding extra risk to your portfolio. If you have not reviewed your investment portfolio recently, I would advise that you meet with your investment professional or wealth manager as soon as possible. If you do not have a wealth manager or want a second opinion on your portfolio, please feel free to email me at marcs@ equityplanning.com and I would be happy to discuss your current portfolio with you and also discuss potential recommendations and strategies with you.

STYLIST FASHION FOWARD

SPRING

Collections The spring collections of top designers experienced a virtual makeover and provided plenty of inspiration for how to update our wardrobes at home. As we enter the new season, a fresh outlook was presented on wardrobe style.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE LEGS Designers made a tacit agreement that a long leg is the silhouette of the season. Chloé offered A-line minis and Etro applied its paisley print to cut-off jean shorts. The house of Versace came out with super-short skirts and mixed a clash of prints and patterns on pleats. NO MORE SWEATPANTS – TROUSERS HAVE RETURNED Perhaps a year of living in sweat and yoga pants has become stale. Perhaps the pendulum has just naturally shifted back. The 2021 collections offer plenty of choices in trousers. Among them are wide-leg, roomy kind seen everywhere from Louis Vuitton to Jacquemus. CLING AWAY It’s not just the bottoms that have shifted either. After a year of comfy, oversized tops – clingy, form-fitting fashion in on the upswing. Sensual, body-revealing clothing is the story at brands like Givenchy and Versace.

ANCHOR’S AWAY Nautical notes appeared at a number of shows, including the anchor-covered intarsia-knit sweaters at Gucci, exaggerated Breton-style tops at Dolce & Gabbana, and sailor sweaters at the Casablanca show. BOMBERS ARE BACK Bomber jackets are going to be big for Spring/Summer 2021, and each designer had their own take on the iconic jacket. The 1970s-style cropped bomber jackets in functional nylon at Gucci, the classic high-shine flight jackets at Philipp Plein, the cropped minimalist bombers at both Prada and Hermès… the list goes on and on… WIDE LEGS ARE PEAKING Like in women’s spring fashion, men are claiming widelegged trousers as their own. Nearly every menswear designer sent out their takes down the virtual runways. Zegna and Casablanca, cut theirs with pleats and draped them with a fluidity. Gucci and Hermès trousers were cut high and with a retro vibe. MSGM, Dolce & Gabbana and Rick Owens made them sporty. One thing that remained consistent across the brands? Roomy is now trendy. 65

PENTHOUSE DUPLEX

WOMEN’S HEALTHCARE

Two months after the priciest condo ever to be listed in DC hit the market, another Georgetown condominium is nipping at its heels. The penthouse duplex at the Residences at Harbourside hit the market last week with a $12 million price tag, making it the second most expensive condo to be listed in the city. The condo is listed with Terri Robinson of Long & Foster. The focal point of the 6,000 square-foot four-bedroom condo may be the 3,400 square-foot terrace that offers a private pool and views of the Potomac River, Kennedy Center, Washington Monument. Each floor of the condo opens on to the spacious terrace. The unit’s private elevator enters into a large entry hall and beyond that the living space really begins to spread out with a living room, large dining room, chef’s kitchen and pantry and library. The second level includes in-unit amenities such as a sauna, spa and exercise room. (Urban Turf)

There’s a new spot on U Street that wants to redefine women’s healthcare. Liv is a comprehensive medical practice for women that combines obstetrics, gynecology, primary care, and mental wellness all under one roof. It’s the brainchild of Advantia Health, an Arlington medical group that uses technology to help streamline the women’s healthcare experience. While the group has acquired and operates a series of practices throughout the country, Liv is its first flagship location built from the ground up. It’s also its first location to incorporate a bevy of medical services under one roof. (Washingtonian)

ENERGY USAGE All the Zooming, Slacking and online shopping that people are doing during the pandemic is having a big impact on the Northern Virginia suburbs. That’s because an estimated 70% of the world’s internet traffic runs through roughly 70 data centers based in Loudoun County, Virginia — and 2020 was a boom year for, well, everything internet. According to commercial real estate firm JLL, companies snapped up more than 320 megawatts of juice at Northern Virginia data centers in 2020, enough to power between 23 and 40 homes for an entire year. (Data center use is typically measured in energy consumption instead of square footage.) That’s more than twice the inventory users demanded in 2019. Most of that demand came from a handful of social media companies — Barnett declines to say which ones — though he says teleworking also played a big role. (dcist)

CULTURE WHERE ART AND LIFE MEET

INTERSECTIONS— MARLEY DAWSON: GHOSTS The Phillip’s Collection May 20 – September 5, 2021 For his Intersections project, Australian artist Marley Dawson has created a site-specific project in two parts that respond to the Phillips’s collection and architecture. Entitled ghosts, the project reimagines the history of the museum in the present.

Inspired by the dramatic architecture of the Phillips’s Goh Annex stairway, Dawson produces two groups of kinetic sculptures that accentuate its spiral configuration. In the first group—comprised of five chairs made in brass and suspended from the dome at different heights and rotating at different axis points—the artist creates a dialogue with both the stairway railing and the Phillips’s early Modernist-Arts-and-Crafts-style chairs. While the shape and size of Dawson’s chairs mirrors the Phillips chairs, the brass he uses is the same as the brass used for the railing. Whereas the museum’s chairs are heavy and sturdy, Dawson’s are weightless and almost translucent; they function like ethereal ghosts of actual objects. Dawson’s other piece—a wall mounted sculpture consisting of hundreds of brass rods hung on a machined brass track and assembled to allow movement—converses with Morris Louis’s painting Number 182. The sculpture is scaled to two thirds, which is precisely Dawson’s height, and the rods are arranged in various patterns to achieve the striped finish of the original painting. A small motor attached to the work oscillates the rods to give them a sway and hum that echo the shimmering radiance of Louis’s painting. Much like with his hanging chairs, Dawson reverses immaterial with material, shifting the liquidy stripes of Louis’s painting into a solid sculptural mass. The Embassy of Australia and HEMPHILL Artworks in Washington, DC, are featuring concurrent presentations of the artist’s most recent body of work.
