Let me be the first to say “Thank you!” This core message of gratitude is demonstrated in many ways throughout this – 2018 Report on Philanthropy.

Within these pages, you will discover the compelling stories of those who gave to HonorHealth Foundation and the amazing results of their compassion–the people whose lives have been forever changed and…saved.

Hello! I’m the new president and CEO of HonorHealth Foundation, and it’s my privilege to present this 2018 Report on Philanthropy.

Also included are the names of our benefactors and all those who chose to make a difference. These listings speak volumes. Many of these contributors gave because of a personal experience they had with HonorHealth.

Others have family or friends who have benefited from the innovative and compassionate care they received at one of our medical centers or through our community programs. Whatever the reason, these names represent the variety of people who put their trust in HonorHealth. And for this, we are forever grateful.

Changing the world is exactly what happened last year at HonorHealth, thanks to you. You may not even be aware of the significant transformation you made in the lives of others through your contribution to HonorHealth Foundation. Last year, more than 1.5 million patients received care throughout the HonorHealth network.

I am so proud to serve you and the community as chairman of the HonorHealth Board of Trustees. I am also proud of the tremendous work that we were able to accomplish, together.

While there is much to celebrate, there are still so many people who need help… cancer is all around us, heart disease is still the nation’s No. 1 health problem, and the leading cause of death. Many working families in our communities don’t have enough money to provide for their children.

Again, thank you for realizing how vital our cause is and…for taking action.

Mary Joy and Jerre Stead have always been committed to living a life of purpose. Using Mary Joy’s grateful patient experience with HonorHealth, the devoted couple were inspired to extend their passion and spirit of philanthropy to make a difference at the very place where she received exceptional medical care.

Information Solutions, IHS-Markit and Churchill Capital Corp. Mary Joy has devoted her life to raising the couple’s two sons and to service and philanthropy on behalf of numerous causes.

“We want to make sure that other patients have the same opportunity as I did to experience the innovative and compassionate care which are the HonorHealth standards,” says Mary Joy. Jerre adds, “Philanthropy, to us, is not just about giving. It’s about investing in the future. We are proud to support HonorHealth for today and tomorrow.”

“The wonderful thing about giving is the joy you get back,” explains Jerre. “We’ve found that the more we give, the more we receive.” The couple also shared their philosophy – Time, Talent and Treasure = Joy, at a HonorHealth Foundation donor appreciation celebration.

This devotion to others is not something new.

The couple’s humble beginnings go back to high school where they met and fell in love. Later, they married while attending the University of Iowa. From those early days, this dynamic duo managed to combine a successful business career and a family that includes two sons.

Even with all the success and accolades, the couple has always stayed close to the core values that have guided them all these years.

2018 Report on Philanthropy

With a few herniated discs in her lower back, 54-year-old Leslie chalked up her ongoing leg pain and tingling to old back issues and injuries. Then, one morning she woke up unable to feel her legs.

“Even with the MS diagnosis, I was hesitant to start treatment,” Leslie said. “Then, I had an MS episode and realized treatment was necessary.”

“We were traveling through Europe, and I was lying in bed next to my husband when I realized my legs were completely numb,” she recalled.

The drug was successful in keeping her MS symptoms at bay and received approval from the Food and Drug Administration. And because of support from donors and friends, Leslie is able to continue her journey.

After returning home, Leslie visited her primary care doctor. When an MRI didn’t offer immediate answers, she was referred to a neurosurgeon to see if the symptoms were linked to her herniated disks. With no apparent connection between the two, Leslie underwent MRI scans of her brain and cervical spine (neck).

Then came a shock she never expected.

After Leslie experienced her first relapse, she enrolled in a clinical trial investigating the effectiveness of a new MS medication.

She encourages patients to not let MS cast a gray cloud over their lives and outlooks.

“You have to deal with the disease and figure out what works for you,” she explained. “I am so grateful for the support of others, which has enabled me to come this far.”

“The MRI showed a huge glob on my neck,” she recalled. “The neurosurgeon thought it might be multiple sclerosis, so he recommended that I see Dr. Lori Hendin Travis.”

Dr. Travis is a neurologist at HonorHealth Neurology in partnership with Phoenix Neurological Associates, and specializes in treating multiple sclerosis, among other neurological conditions.

For Patricia and William “Bill” Naumann, the journey to HonorHealth began 20 years ago when they moved to New Bern, N.C. Soon after settling into their new home, Patricia was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer.

Upon receiving a letter from HonorHealth Foundation asking if they would like to make a philanthropic gift, Patricia and Bill realized this was the perfect opportunity to give back.

Fortunately, she was able to participate in a clinical trial that saved her life. “I was in the right place at the right time,” she believes. “My oncologist lived just two doors down from us, and you’ll do anything to help your neighbors,” she recalls with a laugh.

“Among the many things that shine about HonorHealth,” she adds, “is the strong connection between how the healthcare system is working to make Phoenix a better place to live. We could have just been giving a donation to HonorHealth, but instead found ourselves investing in our new community.”

Filled with gratitude, Patricia and Bill became involved with the hospital and a large nursing program at the community college, in addition to many other charities. This was the first step in their commitment to give back. As CEO of Hatteras Yachts, Bill also began directing the company’s social responsibility efforts to benefit various local organizations. Health and wellness were on their list of worthy causes.

While on a tour of the HonorHealth Research Institute, the couple discovered the perfect match for making a gift. Inspired by the hope that they still feel from the clinical trial Patricia participated in 20 years earlier, she and Bill discovered a service close to their hearts in the Research Institute.

“The journey we all take in life is unique to each of us,” Bill explains. “In the first half, personal growth is dependent on receiving…care from your parents, an education and training for a job. There was a time in our lives when we realized that to continue to grow as people, we had to start giving back.”

Fast forward to 2015 when the couple moved to Fountain Hills, and Patricia sought treatment for a severe migraine at HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center.

“I had no idea how many HonorHealth programs and services we can support,” Patricia says.

“We are very interested in making financial gifts that will benefit others…not just ourselves,” says Bill. “In fact, giving is more enjoyable than the part of life where you receive. It enables you to see things and have experiences you never dreamed of having before.”

2014 was a pivotal year for Philip “Phil” Zeblisky. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer and given less than a year to live. Not willing to take “no” for an answer, Phil began his search for help.

He participated in numerous clinical trials at HonorHealth, as well as at the University of Pennsylvania. Phil worked tirelessly while being treated to help other pancreatic cancer patients through his advocacy work with TGen, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and the Seena Magowitz Foundation.

During this difficult time, Phil chose to approach his life, his diagnosis and his treatment with a positive outlook.
