This philanthropic impact is felt across our HonorHealth network and has a tremendous and long-lasting impact. From offering new and innovative programs like HonorHealth Research Institute’s Early Detection Program, expanding our services with this year’s opening of Sonoran Crossing Medical Center, to providing nutritious meals through the Desert Mission Food Bank and dental services through our Neighborhood Outreach Access to Health, the list goes on and on.

Generational Impact

a philanthropic legacy

When the late James “Jim” Farley needed heart surgery nearly 20 years ago, he traveled out-ofstate for the procedure because the Valley lacked top-notch cardiovascular surgeons.

That didn’t sit well with Jim, an innovator and entrepreneur in the early days of the semiconductor industry.

“He worried about those in the community who didn’t have the resources to seek out care that could make the difference between life and death,” says Sarah Huskey, the eldest of five children born to Jim and his late wife, Nancy.

After discovering that high-caliber heart surgeons didn’t come to the Valley because of a void in quality cardiodiagnostics, Jim took action.

He and Nancy made significant philanthropic gifts to HonorHealth to “change the entire landscape of cardiac care in the Valley,” recalls Sarah.

The Farley’s gifts provided technology and equipment so the tests needed to accurately diagnose heart problems could be

performed and results could be easily accessed—all which helped to expedite effective and potentially lifesaving treatment. Ultimately, their support led to the creation of the James N. and Nancy J. Farley Cardiodiagnostics Department at HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center.

Today, Jim and Nancy’s children proudly follow in their parents’ philanthropic footsteps. Recently, they contributed a significant gift through the Farley Family Charitable Foundation to provide state-of-the-art echocardiography and other testing equipment for the department bearing their mother and father’s names.

This equipment is essential, according to Robert Burke, M.D., HonorHealth’s director of noninvasive cardiodiagnostics.

“Everything we do for patients is determined by their echocardiogram. We see how their heart is functioning. Is it healthy or not? Accuracy of data is critically important or we can start down the wrong treatment path. If that happens, it’s difficult to course correct,” he explains.

“My parents wanted their children to have the opportunity to experience the pleasure and good feeling that comes from supporting the community,” said son Stuart Farley. “And we wanted to continue the good work they started nearly two decades ago.”

That good work also includes contributions to HonorHealth’s K-9 Security Program. The program was a favorite philanthropic interest of Nancy, who funded more than one of its trained canines. The five Farley siblings established an endowment for the K-9 Security Program in their mother’s name to provide a reliable source of revenue for the program.

Whether making gifts to benefit heart patients like their father or provide the highly trained security dogs their mother adored, supporting HonorHealth is a “no brainer,” according to Sarah. Stuart agrees.

“Giving to HonorHealth is needed and it’s put to good use,” he says. “The Farley Family Charitable Foundation and HonorHealth have had a connection for years and will have well into the future.”

SUCHER

Creating a Legacy of Passion and purpose. Two things which have guided Dr. Michel Sucher his entire life. As a highly regarded addiction medicine expert, Dr. Sucher has dedicated much of his professional career to helping those tackling the chaos and complicated aspects of substance use disorders. The breadth and depth of his experience includes serving as: acting Medical Director of the Division of Behavioral Health at the Department of Health Services for the State of Arizona; Chief Medical Officer for Rural/Metro Corporation; Medical Director of Physician Health for HonorHealth and President of the Medical Staff at the Osborn Hospital in 1994. More recently, Dr. Sucher retired as Chief Medical Officer for Community Bridges, where he continues to serve on the Board.

Now, thanks to his generous commitment through his estate plan, and along with his wife, Dr. Susanne Sucher, his life’s work will continue through the establishment of the Michel A. Sucher, M.D. Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program and the Michel A. Sucher, M.D. Endowed Chair in Addiction Medicine. In addition, the two funds will offer critical support for patients and families: the Sucher Family Addiction Medicine and Behavioral Health Fund and the Sucher Family Emergency and Trauma Services Fund.

Care and Hope

“My hope is that with the fellowship program and the endowed chair, HonorHealth will attract top physicians in the addiction field,” says Dr. Sucher.

As the Program Director for the first Addiction Medicine Fellowship in Arizona, Dr. Sucher says, “I see these as great avenues to inspire and motivate others. Addiction Medicine is now recognized as a medical specialty.

Furthermore substance use disorders are considered chronic medical conditions which touch every medical area from internal medicine to surgery to psychiatry and every other area of medicine.“ Dr. Sucher has a long and remarkable history with HonorHealth. He first served as an emergency department physician at our Scottsdale Osborn and Shea Medical Centers where he served as Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine.

“I was very impacted by the patients I treated,” he explains. “Many would come in with trauma coupled with alcohol abuse or an addiction disorder. These experiences compelled me to make this transition.” And, little did he know at the time that his journey would bring him to his lovely wife, Susanne.

An esteemed psychologist specializing in the addiction treatment field, Dr. Susanne Sucher shares a similar personal history with her husband and his commitment to helping others struggling with these chronic disorders. Colleagues and friends

for many years and now married, this inspiring couple has seen first hand, the challenges that come with addiction and recovery. Susanne says “I am so happy that Michel has this opportunity to create a legacy to help others. The fellowship program and endowed chair bring his life’s work and calling full circle. It is an honor to be involved with HonorHealth and for the two of us to be able to do this together,” she adds.

These days, the duo who are affectionally known as “Such and Such,” are looking forward to a new chapter in their lives, one in which they will spend time with their grandchildren, take long walks on the beach, travel, and continue their avid love of film.

“Resources, knowledge and awareness of addiction as a treatable disease were lacking when both Susanne and I started working in this field,” says Dr. Sucher. “With the introduction of these new programs through HonorHealth, along with Community Bridges, it is very rewarding and exciting for everyone: patients, physicians and the community.

There is a huge need for these types of services, and I find it very rewarding that I can help set the foundation to carry on these principles and practices which have been so important in my life.”

“When I think back to the day that my husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, mostly I remember how frightened and lost we felt. We didn’t really know where to turn for help. Then we heard about HonorHealth Research Institute.

This is where Jerry and I met Dr. Erkut Borazanci, who gave us hope for the very first time. Their amazing team of nurses made Jerry feel safe. There’s no question that they cared about him.

Because of how they treated my husband, we fell in love with each and every one of them.

Every time Jerry went for treatment he said he hoped that he could do more to cure this cancer. What better way to honor his memory than to make a donation that supports the Institute’s search for new treatments and even a cure.”

Making an Impact Henry Mohrschladt’s life has truly been an extraordinary voyage. Pursuing his passion, he designed, built and sold sail and power yachts from 20 to 52 feet in length.

Born in California, Henry graduated from the University of California, Irvine and went on to co-found two successful boat companies, Pacific Seacraft Corporation and Cabo Yachts, Inc. After the sale of the last boat company, Henry and his wife Ardis decided to step back and ship off to dryer ground in the state of Arizona. “It was the best move ever,” said Henry. “We enjoy the climate, the beauty of the desert and especially the people here.”

Over the years, Henry and Ardis have maintained their health, but they were troubled watching dear friends and family around them suffering from illnesses. Henry’s mother struggled with Alzheimer’s disease for many years, and it eventually claimed her life.

“It was hard to watch such a dignified woman suffer with this disease,” said Ardis. “And, we didn’t really know where to turn and what resources were available to us.”

Recently, a close friend was diagnosed with cancer. “What struck me about

our friend was the level of care he received from the doctors and staff at HonorHealth. We decided to get involved. Healthcare is vastly different here from where we came from. Everyone is so responsive,” said Henry.

When the Mohrschladts heard about HonorHealth’s plan to create a new HonorHealth Neuroscience Institute where patients can conveniently access comprehensive neurological services under one roof, they were excited to give.

“With my mother’s and other neurological issues in my family, the Neuroscience Institute is close to my heart,” said Henry.

“For people who don’t have access to, or don’t know what resources are available, knowing there will be a facility to provide support when and where people need it is exactly what our community needs,” said Ardis.

Today, Henry and Ardis continue to live a busy and balanced life. They feel secure knowing HonorHealth is right in their backyard whenever a health issue may arise. They are grateful they are able to impact others through their generosity in their new community.

A tribute to ust Ruth J. Lavinia A smile you couldn’t ignore. A hug that said “hello” or provided comfort. Hope to those in need.

Ruth Lavinia offered each to her family and many friends, and through her longstanding philanthropy, even to those she did not personally know.

Long before Ruth became a member of HonorHealth Foundation’s Board of Trustees in 2011, she demonstrated her determination to make a difference for HonorHealth’s patients, families and our community. She and her husband Bob have given generously to HonorHealth Foundation for the past 18 years.

They also have been enthusiastic supporters of The Honor Ball. Ruth repeatedly rolled up her sleeves to help The Honor Ball raise funds for HonorHealth’s cancer research, programs and services.

“Ruth was nothing short of amazing.

Her service and dedication to HonorHealth came straight from her genuinely compassionate heart,” HonorHealth Foundation President Emeritus John Ferree.

She served as a committee member, helped underwrite kick off luncheons and was co-chairman of the 2015 event.

She inspired her friends to get involved through her passion for making The Honor Ball both successful and enjoyable. She also was a member of the HonorHealth Community Cancer Leadership Council, a role that was near and dear to her.

Not surprisingly, the Lavinias were the honorees of The Honor Ball 2018. Prior to that, they were recognized as Fabulous Phoenicians by Trends magazine for their philanthropic commitment to the community, which also included involvement with the Barrow Ball and Fresh Start.

Originally from Long Island, New York, the Lavinias called the Valley home for more than two decades. Married nearly 50 years, the couple once shared their “finest hours” with Trends magazine. Ruth noted hers were marrying Bob and giving birth to two sons, Scott and Todd, while Bob identified his as “the moment I met Ruth.”

Ruth’s grace, courage and drive to help others will always be remembered. We are incredibly saddened to lose this beautiful member of our HonorHealth family and are beyond grateful for everything Ruth did and the example she set for us all to live by.

The (Heart) Beat Goes On Scottsdale resident Marilyn Bechtold has a soft spot in her heart for HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center.

After all, she’s alive today because of the hospital’s expert care, along with the dedication of Scottsdale Fire Department paramedics.

“I’m so lucky that Thompson Peak Medical Center was closest and I was taken there,” says Marilyn, who suffered a massive cardiac arrest in early 2018.

The first responders shocked her heart multiple times while en route to the hospital’s Emergency Department. Once there, a medical team led by Charles “Chip” Finch, DO, did everything possible to save Marilyn before ultimately declaring her dead.

Or so they thought. Five minutes later, Annie Davis, RN noticed that Marilyn was breathing.

After miraculously experiencing what is known as “return of spontaneous circulation,” Marilyn received both a pacemaker and a defibrillator.

She spent three weeks at Thompson Peak Medical Center, an additional two weeks at a rehabilitation hospital, and completed an HonorHealth cardiac rehabilitation program.

“Everyone at Thompson Peak Medical Center was not only professional but so caring and wonderful. The cardiologist held my hand every morning and explained what was going on. Now he’s also my husband’s cardiologist!” says Marilyn.

“I am so grateful for Thompson Peak Medical Center and all the compassionate people there who cared for me.”

Completely recovered and back to working from home as an executive coach and career consultant, she recalls that a dear friend, the Catholic archbishop of Santa Fe, visited her in the hospital. He told her that God wasn’t ready for her.

“My reply was that I wasn’t ready to see God either, I’m too young to meet God!” says Marilyn.

“When I think back, it’s unbelievable,” she adds. “I am so grateful for Thompson Peak Medical Center and all the compassionate people there who cared for me.”

A Gift From

the Heart

Dalton and Elaine Knauss’ support of HonorHealth has been steady, strong and ongoing. Thanks to one of their latest contributions, the heart beats of thousands of patients will have the same characteristics.

The couple personally funded advanced technology and the renovation of a new interventional cardiology lab at HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center. The resulting Dalton and Elaine Knauss Family Heart Lab is a state-of-the-art facility for treating abnormal heart rhythms.

“Over the years, the Knauss’ support has enabled HonorHealth to provide the highest-caliber care to our patients afflicted with heart and vascular disease.

Their generosity has allowed HonorHealth physicians to successfully perform the most-advanced minimally invasive procedures, significantly improving patients’ quality of life,” says HonorHealth Chief Scientific Officer and Director of Structural and Coronary Interventions

David Rizik, M.D. An interventional cardiologist, Dr. Rizik and his team have cared for the Knauss family for years.

“The Knauss’ are exceptional individuals. We are so grateful for their support and the difference they continue to make for heart patients, their families and our community,” added Dr. Rizik.

“We have such admiration for HonorHealth’s heart experts. But just like carpenters need tools, they need a specialized lab to do what they do,” says Dalton, explaining the recent gift.

“It’s such a joy to give to help people,” adds his wife Elaine.

The couple has generously supported what is now HonorHealth since 1998. Thanks to their contribution to create the Dalton and Elaine Knauss Family Heart Lab, patients will be treated by top physicians using the latest techniques and medical equipment—making it possible for them to return to playing golf or with their grandchildren, go back to work, raise families, take vacations and simply enjoy life.

Grants Highlights The HonorHealth Foundation grants team seeks out and secures funding from numerous generous government, corporate and private foundation sources. These grants totaled more than $1.8 million in 2019, supporting HonorHealth medical centers, healthcare and community benefit programs.

Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust

The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust has brought hope and healing to thousands of cancer patients and their families through its pivotal support of HonorHealth. Most recently, the Trust has supported HonorHealth to establish the Virginia G. Piper Distinguished Chair in Innovative Cancer Research. This endowed chair honors Daniel D. Von Hoff, M.D., FACP, FASCO, FAACR, and Chief Scientific Officer of the HonorHealth Research Institute. Internationally recognized in cancer research, Dr. Von Hoff is a compassionate physician and tireless Community Benefit researcher whose life’s work has improved, extended and saved the lives of countless patients.

The Del E. Webb Foundation has significantly furthered the HonorHealth Military Partnership’s goal to become our country’s premier Military Medical Training Center. Grant funds from the Del E. Webb Foundation have expanded the facilities available for hands-on trauma simulation training and classroom instruction that provides military medical personnel and local first responders with the true-to-life experience they need to save lives in our community and on battlefields worldwide.

Funds awarded in 2019 will complete the building renovation to increase functionality, storage, safety, security and integrity of the building to take full advantage of this newly expanded training capacity.

Republic Services has been a long-time partner in the the battle against hunger in our community through support of the Desert Mission Food Bank. They are actively invested in eliminating hunger and promoting good nutrition for thousands of people struggling to make ends meet by providing year-round employee volunteer support and financial resources to grow Desert Mission’s programs. Republic Services’ commitment to leading through action continues to make a significant impact on the health and well-being of those HonorHealth serves.

Desert Mission is combating hunger by helping to bridge nutrition gaps that negatively affect the health and well-being of community residents and HonorHealth patients.

One in four children don’t have reliable access to nutritious and affordable foods. When families are struggling financially, finding high-quality food to feed their family becomes a daily concern. Low-income families report that eating healthfully is especially difficult because fresh fruit and vegetables in their neighborhoods are rare, expensive and of poor quality.

Desert Mission Endowment

A celebration of Desert Mission’s legacy and ensuring its future HonorHealth Desert Mission traces its roots to 1927, a time when it brought food and medical supplies to people who camped north of the Phoenix city limits, hoping dry desert air would cure their respiratory ailments.

Today, Desert Mission has grown and greatly expanded its community programs. Yet its purpose remains unchanged: to meet the needs of the vulnerable in our community. But what about tomorrow?

HonorHealth Desert Mission Endowment The HonorHealth Desert Mission Endowment, established in 2019, honors Desert Mission’s history and growth while also ensuring its ability to improve lives for generations to come.

Contributions to the endowment will provide a predictable, reliable source of revenue in perpetuity, thereby securing the future of Desert Mission and its ability to serve our community. Our goal is to continue to raise these vital funds as part of the endowment.

When Colton’s mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, all he wanted for his 13th birthday was to host an event to raise funds for breast cancer awareness. Then he set up a lemonade stand in the family driveway. “Colton was born with a ‘special’ heart,” explains mom Jill. “But what makes his heart the most special is how he always puts others first.” - Jill Henderson, mom

The 2020 Hope for the Cause Mirabel Charity Classic was a resounding success, with nearly $500,000 in net proceeds directed to the HonorHealth Research Institute. HonorHealth Research Institute Neighborhood Outreach Access to Health Transforming the health of our community, NOAH offers accessible, affordable care at nine clinics across Scottsdale, Phoenix and Glendale. Clinics are located in areas where income is low and the number of uninsured and underserved individuals is high. Two of these sites are located in schools.

Through generous philanthropic support, NOAH provides a full range of primary and preventative health services for all ages and stages of life. Patients receive compassionate, quality care regardless of their ability to pay, and if needed, get help with enrolling for healthcare coverage or food assistance. In 2019, nearly 37,000 patients were served with 144,282 total visits.

Embracing innovation to benefit our community and beyond, HonorHealth Research Institute’s leading scientists, physicians and clinical teams target everything from cancer and cardiovascular disease to neurological conditions, traumatic injuries and more.

Working together, they develop new treatments and therapies to improve, extend and save lives—with more than 200 clinical trials conducted in 2019 alone. Increasingly, these passionate investigators also are exploring new medical devices and technologies.
