T

he vast array of items that can be found inside the Hospitality House Thrift Store symbolizes the many different ways the nonprofit continues to grow and evolve. After four decades of advocating for women, children and men affected by domestic violence in Rome and Floyd County, Hospitality House for Women, Inc., has been changing not only how it deals with relationships in current times, but also the way it connects with different groups of people to ensure that the path to its services is open to all who need to take it. Ashley Demonbreun-Chapman is the outreach coordinator for the Hospitality House and works with members of the community to emphasize the organization’s message of safe, non-violent relationships and provide them education on how to deal with the different causes and effects of domestic

violence. “A lot of people think of the Hospitality House and they think of a domestic violence shelter, which would be accurate. It’s part of what we do,” the Rome native said. “But what we have found is that there are a lot of people out there — women, children, even men — who need help getting safe from abuse who don’t necessarily need shelter. Now we’re in a space where we’re working on expanding our services to under-reached and underserved populations.” Hospitality House for Women, Inc., began with a small shelter for women and children in South Rome in 1978 with no more than seven beds. It now operates a larger shelter with 27 beds. The thrift store it operates on Shorter Avenue in Rome is stocked with donations from the community and its proceeds go directly back to the organization to fund the many different services it offers.

Demonbreun-Chapman emphasized that they offer all of the same services to both men and women, with the only exception being shelter service. Beyond that are relocation services, financial assistance, employment and legal advocacy, therapy, as well as a 24-hour crisis intervention hotline, all free and confidential. “Really what we want people to know is that we are continuing to do the work we’ve always done in the community, but all of our services are about getting a person who is a victim of domestic abuse that needs help to get to safety,” she said. “Those are the only parameters. A person doesn’t have to have a protective order or a police report before they come in. We are a confidential and safe space for those seeking safety.” The office Demonbreun-Chapman works in is part of the Serve Rome group of ministries and nonprofits on the campus of the First United Methodist Church

near downtown. From there, she has been able to see Hospitality House’s expansion into new areas of awareness and prevention. Part of that expansion has been creating Spanish-language brochures and finding ways to update the organization’s website to make it accessible to people who don’t speak English. “Each different culture and population can have its own unique barriers when it comes to domestic violence. Obviously with the Spanish-speaking community there is a feeling that you can’t always seek help because of legal statuses, so we’re looking at ways to minimize that barrier,” she said. Hospitality House is also developing what DemonbreunChapman referred to as a “more approachable” way of connecting with the deaf and hard of hearing community, including at their shelter. Working with the Georgia School for the Deaf in Cave Spring, Demonbreun-Chapman and another member of the Hospitality House staff participated in an American Sign Language immersion course to give them a foundation for basic communications. “It really helped us, as an agency, wrap our minds around some of the things we need to do in order to be a space that is comfortable for people who are deaf or hard of hearing and make it so people can contact us easily and have translation that makes sense,” she said. While Hospitality House has always had prevention efforts, they’ve noticed a trend that led them to revise their thinking toward prevention and awareness among youth. “What we found talking to high school and middle school students, it really wasn’t a prevention effort anymore, it’s an awareness effort because so many high school students are already seeing the ramifications in their relationships that are unhealthy and involve violence,” Demonbreun-Chapman said. After researching different national programs that teach dating violence prevention, including Futures Without Violence and Mindfulness in Schools Project, the group looked at not just teaching high school students, but kids as young as kindergarten the ideas of compassion, emotional regulation and methods of stress reduction. As a yoga and mindfulness instructor, Demonbreun-Chapman said the approach hit home for her, and she has worked with others in the organization to incorporate a younger angle into its promotion of healthy relationships by developing the program “Being Kids” for educators to use in the classroom and adapt for their students. “For me, you’ve got to teach them things like math, science and reading, but really they’re going to be the most successful if they are able to do that in the context of having healthy relationships and good leader-ship skills.” The Hospitality House Thrift Store is located at 610 Shorter Ave. in the shopping center of the former West Rome IGA grocery store. The organization’s 24-hour crisis intervention hotline is 706-235-4673, and its website is www. hospitalityhouseforwomen.com.

NEWBY FARMS Story and photos by Doug Walker

Rome Feb 2019 A37 A38 A39 - Vineyard 37

A

financial consultant by day, Bill Newby is quick to say he would not advise his average client with a couple of hundred acres to get into the winery business “unless they want to work a lot.” Ironically, it was the thought that grape vines would pretty much last longer that he would that convinced Newby to start Newby Farm and Vineyard. It’s located on acreage off Billy Pyle Road in West Rome. “We had the land and I was tired of bush hogging,” Newby said. “I wanted to plant something that didn’t require being planted each and every year and these grape vines should live longer than I should and we go through a lot of wine here.” But make no mistake about the fact the grapes don’t just take care of themselves. Newby’s wife Shannon said the winter months were her favorite part of the business. “I don’t love it so much in July,” she said. Billy said his wife was okay with the first half acre and 300 vines. “She thought I had lost my mind when I did the next four.” Newby has some wine in aging tanks at a friend’s winery right now. It takes about 18 months before it gets bottled. Once he starts bottling he expects that most of the wine will be sold to folks in the immediate Rome area. “We just don’t produce enough to mass distribute,” he said. In spite of that, Newby said that his vineyards and impending winery are definitely a business and not a hobby. “There’s a half million dollars worth of wine growing out there each year. Not a half million net profit, but a half million gross,” he said. Newby grows five different varieties of grapes on his farm, the Blanc DuBois and Dillard Blanc, both used to make white wines, the Lenoir, Chambourcin and America which are reds. His consultant suggested that he not plant the Chambourcin but

Rome Feb 2019 A37 A38 A39 - Vineyard 38

since that is one of his favorite wines, he decided to plant a small test plot. “It did well, so this spring we may fill out the section where it’s at,” Newby said. “That’ll be the only new plantings with the exception of the replacement of a few dead vines.” Like many other agribusiness families in the Rome area this past year, Newby said the above average rainfall put a dent in his harvest. “We threw out a ton and a half to two tons of grapes,” he said.

The grapes are harvested in July and August. At that point it’s all hands on deck. “Everybody in the family helps out and as many friends as we can get to volunteer to come out and pick,” he said. “We can pick the whole place in two days though.” His two children, son Rearden, 9 and daughter

Kieran Ellis,7, are still more interested in play time. “They’re not motivated by money yet so I can’t offer to pay them to get them to do anything. It lasts about 10 minutes and then it’s off to something else,” Newby said. He made it very clear though that as they get older, they’ll be out among the vines to help prune in the winter and pick in the summer. The farm includes about four and a half acres of beautifully manicured, terraced land that drains well. He’s got 2,700 vines at this point. He’s only got two or three more acres he could expand to without doing a lot of timber clearing. The land has been in the family for over 50 years. His great uncle established it after the Korean War but used it primarily for the boarding of horses and a goat dairy. The wine market has been growing exponentially in recent years, thanks to changing tastes and demographics. Newby said that the younger generation is taking much more interest in wine at a younger age and more men are developing a taste for wines. Just like the trend in the beer industry, more small local wineries are popping up across the country, particularly North Georgia where soil conditions are good for many of the different varieties. For the time being, Newby is growing the grapes and adding to his inventory of equipment to ultimately convert an old barn on the property into an actual winery and special events build-ing. “That’s in the two to three year range to open the winery,” Newby said. “As I find deals on winery equipment I’m buying it.” He just purchased a huge walk-in cooler/ freezer. A press should come next, along with more holding tanks and barrels. One of his prides is a 1949 Ford truck which looks like something out of an old winemaking magazine. He saw it on eBay and was able to buy for $775, then learned that it was in North Dakota and figured out it probably took him that much money again to get it to Georgia. Now here, it’s perfect to drive along the terrace and stack bins of freshly picked grapes in at harvest. Fortunately for the wife, in-laws and kids, that’s still months down the road.

Roman Romance

If you’re looking for something fun or something different to do with your special someone on Valentine’s Day, the locals have a few suggestions for perfect dates in and around Rome…

Scot Dean Soho Hibachi is good enough for two anniversaries. So Valentine’s there is a no brainer.

JJ Seifert Chris Davidson Rome Little Theatre, Inc is doing a production of “Almost, Maine” for Valentine’s Day weekend. It’s a magical romantic comedy — perfect for a Valentine’s date.

Alice Stephens Dinner at Coosa Country Club and dance lessons.

Claire Rogers Can’t beat a romantic dinner at Barnsley Gardens followed by a walk around the ruins. Well technically that isn’t Rome, right? Ok, so Chick-fil-A would be a very close second because who cares about romance when you have waffle fries as a menu option? Plus, they are so darn nice over there.

Lisa Faircloth

Me, PJs, red wine, and the dogs in the comfy bed binge watching some ridiculous show. I’m not sure what my husband’s ideal date would be. Probably playing video games while I’m Netflixing.

Kathy Proudfoot Nice dinner....at home. Too crowded at the restaurants. A good movie is always a winner, one that we as a family can watch. Mysty Osborne, our adult Down Syndrome daughter, usually makes or buys us a card and gives us lots of love. That’s all we need...the 3 of us, our forever love for each other....oh yes, and food. (After numerous health issues) just being together and being well is what we want for Valentines.

Josh Grant Dinner and dessert along Broad Street. Depending on the crazy Georgia weather, maybe a walk along the river and cuddling on one of the swings. If the couple has been together for a while, they could put an engraved lock on the bridge.

Going to sleep by 8:30 while watching a Netflix documentary.

Jamie Foster Karaoke night! Participating for the confident, observing for those look-ing for a lighthearted night of laughs. The casual setting takes away any pressure to “overly-impress” in new romances, and cheaper alcohol and appetizers are perfect for long-time partners who don’t want to shell out an arm and a leg at dinner.

Joanna Overstreet Lunch at Doug’s Deli followed by a Swift & Finch coffee.

Bonnie Wasdin Going for a hike to the House o’ Dreams at Berry College.

Charisse Durham La Scala and Seasons are our favorites when they do their dinners and pairings. Then a stroll for a little live music. The Marriott has a great patio with fire pit as does The Foundry. However, Valentines is crazy, so getting to go and enjoy it at home is not a bad option.

Jennifer Waters We are kind of cheesy and opt for adventure/ romance/things out of the norm. I think a perfect Valentines date in Rome would look something like this. Picnic/hike/exploring at Berry (so many places are perfect to spread out a blanket and have a nice picnic lunch). Dinner at Harvest Moon. Fondue at Selman’s Country store (I’ve heard its spectacular). We also enjoy Putt-Putt. If the weather cooperates we like mini golf and if the weather is yucky there is nothing like a game of laser tag to keep the love alive. My husband would tell you that I love to ride around and enjoy the lights, sights and sounds in Rome. My favorite places are Mt. Alto, downtown Rome and the Between the Rivers district. Basically it doesn’t have to cost much it’s more about who I’m spending my Valen-tines with and I’m blessed to have a husband that feels the same.

Mike Taylor The shooting range. Nothing says love like “pew pew pew.”

Kathryn Armstrong Dinner at the Claremont House.

Rome Feb 2019 A42 A43 - Perfect Date Q and A 43

Katie Kiser A surprise flight from Richard B. Russell Regional Airport after a nice dinner. And a personal fireworks display after we land. Maybe a live band playing too...because I like to dance.

Julia Pollard Drinks at Off Broad at Hawthorne Suites then dinner at Yummy Thai and dessert at Honeymoon Bakery.

Rob Byars Barnsley Gardens, horseback ride followed up with a couples massage then a nice dinner and a few cocktails by their fire pits and listening to tunes.

Crystal Byars It’s a Thursday right? One dollar tacos at Las Palmas for a cheap date night.

Chris Bartelski and his son take in the sights at an Atlanta United Game. The Bartelskis (and many area families just like them) are huge Atlanta United fans.

UNITED WE STAND By Blake Silvers

S

occer in the south wasn’t supposed to work at the highest level. There weren’t supposed to be enough supporters or enough interest. When Atlanta billionaire and Falcons owner Author Blank worked through the plans for the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium to replace the Georgia Dome, it was to be a home for two teams. Since the Atlanta United FC played its first match at Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium in 2017, the doubters about the other southern football have been steadily silenced. Since moving downtown to the Benz midway through their first season, the team now owns the

Rome Feb 2019 A45 A46 A47 A48 - Soccer 45

top seven all-time Major League Soccer attendance records with a top crowd of 72,243 this past season. The team also owns the top four attendance records for MLS playoff matches, the largest at 73,019 on Dec. 6. With all of the youth soccer clubs in the area, and with college and high school soccer readily available to play and watch, it’s not that shocking that there is a good bit of local interest in big-time soccer. Of course Mercedes-Benz Stadium is only around an hour away for most folks in Northwest Georgia, and with the Atlanta United training ground in Marietta and the organization’s reserve team – Atlanta United 2 – set to play home games at Kennesaw State’s Fifth Third Bank Stadium,

professional soccer is well within reach for local fans. One mainstay of every MLS match is the presence of supporter groups, who are made up of the most committed followers of each club. Rome’s group – the Roman Legion – is one the many parts that make up the larger Terminus Legion. Run by chapter head Aaron Nobles, the group meets up to watch away games together at Bella Roma. The 2018 season turned out to be a magical one for the Atlanta United, winning the MLS Cup in the club’s second ever season of play and break-ing the state of Georgia’s major trophy drought. A ton of local supporters went along for the ride.

1/17/2019 6:10:45 PM

Chase Watterson - Rome The way the team arrived, received state wide support and a massive infrastructure and financial investment through Arthur Blank was astounding. The coaches, staff and players recruited were a huge signal of intent to the rest of the league. Not only did all these things come together beautifully but the way in which the title was achieved was the really beautiful thing. Soccer is not a sport of one tactical approach. Atlanta United took the approach of playing the beautiful game as so many of us love to see it played: with style, attacking flair and with players expressing themselves and scoring goals. Atlanta United was a fantastic way to introduce the sport to anyone who wasn’t familiar with it. The team was always looking to possess the ball, control the game and attack which ever team was in front of them. They are a team that we should be tremendously proud of and thankful to for the fantastic memories they’ve provided us already! Long may it continue, Vamos Atlanta, Vamos United!

Shannon Morgan – Rome I got involved in soccer when my youngest child began playing with the YMCA in 2013. I was ecstatic when the news broke out of the newest MLS team, Atlanta United. Being inside the stadium with 40-70,000 people who are also passionate about “The Beautiful Game” is the most electrifying and exciting feeling ever. No one is a stranger. From the tailgate, marching in, and standing for all 90 minutes of the match is what I live for. I never leave the stadium without a new scarf in hand to add to my collection. When the team plays away matches, I’m usually at Bella Roma with other local soccer fans watching & cheering the boys. Every match, our Terminus Legion supporters group takes a group photo. We fly our flag everyday, even during off season.

Jay Roberts – Bartow County Long story short, I’m a native rural Southerner and fell in love with the game after seeing “Soccer Made in Germany” on PBS as a kid in the 70s. I saw that Atlanta had a pretty kickin’ soccer scene when I hit town in ‘87 and thought we’d get one of the original MLS franchises in ‘96. We didn’t. In 2017 I said “I’ve waited TWENTY YEARS for this team!” In 2018 I said “It was worth the wait.” Me and my old college crush went to the Toronto game in 2017. I walked into the Benz with the roof and the 300 level open, and shed a tear or two of joy. As a soccer fan who grew up in the South, I never thought I’d ever see anything like that in my lifetime.

Rome Feb 2019 A45 A46 A47 A48 - Soccer 46

1/17/2019 6:11:04 PM

Lily Madrid – Rome When we moved back to Georgia my husband had told me that Atlanta was getting a soccer team and he was going to get season tickets. We both grew up in Rome and I was a bit apprehensive at first because soccer does not seem very big in the south. From that first game at Bobby Dodd we were all hooked. Half way through the season we got my brother Carlos Rosales and sister-in-law Tiffany Rosales to get season passes for the 2018 year. It has been such an amazing experience for all of us that has truly united families and a city. Our two boys Mason, 10, and Cristian Madrid, 3, have loved going to the games. For Mason, who plays soccer for SSA in Rome, it has been extra special because he now has a team that he can root for on the pitch and not just on TV. I would have never thought Atlanta was ready for soccer in this way but “Uncle Arthur” brought it and we came with record setting attendance.

Heather Hard – Rome Soccer is family to us. My kids play for SSA North Georgia and our oldest was selected to attend a trip to Spain last summer, pretty awesome trip for anyone, especially for someone who is 11. His picture is in front of the Arch de Triumph in Barcelona, repping the five stripes. His name is Sam Hard. He even got an “Atlanta!” shout from someone. We also have a great story about how the team has crossed the world. We were in the huge Nike team store at Camp Nou, FC Barcelona’s stadium, with the rest of his soccer team after a tour. One of the workers asked if he could help us and asked if we were with a team. I explained that we were with a team from the United States and we lived outside Atlanta. The worker was immediately taken with us, he asked us if we had ever seen Josef Martinez play. We said yes, of course we had and we were huge Atlanta United fans. He explained that he was Venezuelan and had been following Martinez for some time. Sam talked to him a bit about his coaches here in Rome, several of whom are from Venezuela. I pulled out my phone and found a picture of Sam and Josef taken at a fundraiser for CHOA and the kid, from Venezuela, but working at the Nike store, in Barcelona, was so impressed with this picture. He nodded and gave Sam a pat on the head. Soccer brings us all together so much. Owen, almost 9, is excited by the pageantry of it all. He knows all of the chants and is pictured at the Championship game in his scarf and beanie. He loves playing and learning about the game. Caroline is our youngest and is 6. The best story I have about her and the love she has for the game was on a family trip this fall to Utah. We were at a lecture about Native Americans at one of the national parks to earn her junior ranger badge. The ranger showed us an atlatl and asked us if we knew what it was, our kids knew right away what it was and what it was used for. The lady next to me asked me how it was spelled. I spelled it for her and Caroline immediately broke into the “Vamos Vamos ATL” chant. The very nice lady was a bit taken back by my 6-year-old dancing about a soccer team on the other side of the continent.

Todd Timberland – Rome I’m a professor at Berry and Karen is a pediatrician with Floyd Primary Care. Max is a sophomore at Rome High and Pete is in 7th grade at Berry Middle. We are all HUGE Atlanta United fans. Both of my boys play soccer for their schools and with SSA (and formerly with YMCA rec), I help coach the Berry Middle team and used to coach YMCA (and used to play when I was younger), and Karen helps organize the teams. We love soccer and were thrilled when Atlanta got a team. You can imagine how excited we were when that team made the playoffs in their first year and won the MLS Cup in their second. Amazing!

Kevin Storey-Pitts - Rome My girlfriend Katie Stout and I both live in downtown Rome and have (United) season tickets so we go to every home game. We’ve also gone to a few away games including Orlando and New York Red Bulls this year.

Alone in the Pacific Northwest Photos by Shannon Pollitz

Cover photo: Multnomah Falls, just outside Portland, Oregon in the Columbia River Gorge. Pepperell Middle School teacher Shannon Pollitz took a six-day solo trip to the Pacific Northwest which she calls “life changing.” The falls were one of the highlights of her trip. Spanning two tiers on basalt cliffs, it is the tallest waterfall in the state of Oregon.

La Push, in the Quileute Indian Reservation on the Washington Peninsula. This area was a setting for the popular “Twilight” book series. Shannon took this photo at sunrise.

The Salmon River Wilderness Area in Hood National Forest. A friend suggested the hike to Shannon who ended up spending about three hours there.

Rome Feb 2019 A51 A52 A53 A54 A55 A56 - Travel 52

Olympic National Park is located on the Washington Peninsula. This particular entrance is the Quinalt Rainforest. Shannon said the amount of green trees and plants, the height of the trees, the moss-covered ground and overall peacefulness of the area made it a wonderful place to visit. There are two temperate rainforests (coniferous or broadleaf forests) within Olympic National Park, Quinalt and the Hoh Rainforest. The park has four regions: the Pacific coastline, alpine areas, the west side temperate rainforest and the forests of the drier east side.

1/17/2019 6:14:36 PM

This snowy photo was taken at a place called Government Camp, located at the base of Mt. Hood in Northern Oregon and is the gateway to several ski resorts. The Ski Bowl is located here where visitors can enjoy tubing as well as great local restaurants.

Shannon said Voodoo Doughnut is one of the iconic Portland things to do. It offers “wild concoctions” of dougnut flavors and other pastries. She really liked the Heath bar doughnut which included chocolate, caramel and Heath bar sprinkles.

Shannon captured this stunning view of the Columbia River and gorge. There is a small building visible on the right. It’s called Vista House and sits on an overlook. This was the area Lewis and Clark came down the Columbia on their famous expedition. Shannon admits she’s a “history nerd” and loved learning about the history of the area.

Latourell Falls is a waterfall along the Columbia River Gorge. Latourell is unique among the best-known Columbia Gorge waterfalls in that it drops straight down from an overhanging basalt cliff. Most of the other falls (even the famous Multnomah Fall) tumble to some degree. The Hoh Rainforest within Olympic National Park. Since she was traveling alone, Shannon relied on the help of a tree stump to take this photo so it wouldn’t look like a selfie. Although she usually travels with friends and family, Shannon said this was one adventure she wanted to go on alone to face a few fears. She’s glad she had the courage to do it.

Taken from Ecola State Park, this photo offers a view toward Cannon Beach. The famous Haystack Rock is visible in the background. This was taken at sunset.

Ruby Beach, along the Washington Coast within Olympic National Park, is a popular tourist destination. Shannon said it was quite a hike down to the beach but totally worth it. She recommends good hiking shoes for this one.

Another snowy shot taken at Government Camp at the base of Mt. Hood. Shannon said she went looking for snow. Driving got a little dicey at times but she didn’t have too much trouble.

Rome Feb 2019 A51 A52 A53 A54 A55 A56 - Travel 55

This unusual sign was on the road from Forks, Washington to La Push. After the “Twilight” book series by Stephenie Meyer became such a sensation, so many people flocked to the area that locals put up signs to appeal to the Twilight-seeking tourists.

1/17/2019 6:15:14 PM

Shannon came upon this scenic trail as she was leaving the Salmon River Wilderness Area in Hood National Forest. As a female traveling alone, she said there was a need to be cautious, always staying within easy distance of her car. But she never felt afraid and said everyone she met was extremely friendly. She recommends always having maps of the area or if using maps on a phone, save photos of the map in cause of limited cell service.

Sunset at Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast. During warmer months, tide pools reveal giant starfish. But since Shannon visited in the winter, she didn’t get to see the giant starfish. She did see a variety of coastal plants and animals, however. The towns in this area reminded her of seaside towns in Florida, bustling with tourists and visitors but still naturally beautiful.

A S MALL TOWN WITH B IG IDEAS

BOBBY WALKER

In 2008 I moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana after spending thirteen years in Rome. It was a challenging decision for me as I dearly loved Rome. But I needed a new challenge in my work life. Fast forward 10 years, and at 57 years old I am faced with deciding where I want to live the rest of my life. The decision was easy. My choice is to live in the small town with big ideas — Rome, Georgia. Beginning Dec. 1 I accepted a position as Director of Community Tennis for Rome Tennis Center at Berry College. The charm of Rome is it’s the closest non suburb city to Atlanta. You have all the conveniences and excitement of a suburb without the headaches. It has a touch of Mayberry about it but larger. In our awesome city we have one of the largest tennis centers in the country, one of the nicest public golf courses anywhere, a state of the art minor league baseball stadium, and a downtown restaurant district that is unparalleled for a city its size. I believe what allows this to happen is the spirit of collaboration and community that exists here. Our local government, private enterprise, and the local citizenry cooperate at a level I have not witnessed in other cities. When I left Rome in 2008 my departure was a lead story on the front page of the Rome News-Tribune. It made me feel inc e ibly s ecial ing y fi st onth back ha inne with several old friends made when I lived here before — Steve and Jaime Bennett, Tina Rush, Dana Holbrook, Suzanne and David Clontz, Mary Hardin and Bill Thornton and a few others. Bill Thornton (the elder) was kind enough to let me live with him for two weeks while I made living arrangements. Bill is the finest an ha e e e et call hi the i e iniste of Armuchee. It was great to catch up and they are all special. But at the end of the day I have special friends in all three cities I have assimilated in for over ten years — Macon, Rome, and Lake Charles. What makes Rome different is the citizens’ engagement and community involvement. I want to be a part of that again. I have missed it. esently a li ing in an a a t ent at the iffin on oa Street. I told my realtor, Andy Kight, the next house I buy will be he e lea e feet fi st ant the neighbo s to say that g y ol an finally ie ha e o ne t o ho ses in Old East Rome and dearly love that neighborhood. The Armuchee area has some promising residential possibilities as well. I look forward to making that next move. On the personal side most of my biological family lives in Macon but Rome is close enough to visit often. My girlfriend lives in Louisiana and we see each other on weekends. Neither of these situations is ideal but technology certainly akes that easie than it o l ha e been t enty fi e yea s ago. They all understand the rationale for my move and are supportive.

I am very grateful to the City of Rome government and its eo le fo ha ing confi ence in e look fo a to working with groups like the Coosa Valley Tennis Association, the Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau, Berry College and the city and county school systems, just to name a few. Rome Tennis Center at Berry College should accomplish two goals — bring tourism dollars to Rome and make Rome’s citizens healthier through increased activity with tennis. Leveraging Rome’s penchant for collaboration will make achieving these goals more possible. The tournament schedule conservatively brings 20-25 million dollars in economic impact to the area. This has been accomplished very quickly. Tom Daglis and Lisa Smith have done a great job developing tennis tourism. Rome’s past is wonderful but I think its best days may lie ahead. Rome’s business footprint has increased a atically since li e he e last he o s econo ic e elo ent see to be in the fo e o e also s en s time and resources taking care of those who have less. The number and scope of charities in this arena has also grown. The Rome News Tribune is a local newspaper that still prints local news. If you haven’t lived elsewhere you don’t know how rare that is. I have run many a tennis tournament around the southeast. People who visit Rome fall in love with our city. They love its charm and hospitality. I am proud to call it my hometown even though I wasn’t born here. To me… there’s no place like Rome.
