“I COULDN’T COMPLETE MY WORKOUT.” For my heart, I choose Redmond. Danny

Open Heart Surgery

At 52, Danny was a world champion power lifter and could not imagine he had heart disease. But when he experienced symptoms of fatigue, shortness of breath, and nausea, his daughter suspected he was having a heart attack. He was taken by ambulance to Redmond’s ER where the heart team determined he had blockage in six arteries and needed immediate open heart surgery. Three years later, Danny is back to the sport he loves, telling his friends about the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Danny is thankful for Redmond, the only hospital in Northwest Georgia performing life-saving open heart surgery.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Otis Raybon

T

he Rome and entire Northwest Georgia area we love to call home is becoming a wedding destination community. Wedding planners, photographers, caterers, restaurants, hotels, churches, and so many more are working hard to provide the very best weddings possible for brides and grooms. Several new venues have been built and older ones have been remodeled creating a growing and posh environment for couples across the region. Our staff has gone the extra mile for readers of this issue of Rome Life. They have captured much of this relatively new venture for businesses and individual families preparing for a very special occasion in their lives. In this edition of Rome Life, we’re spotlighting the weddings of 10 local couples. With the help of area photographers, we tried to capture the uniqueness of each. We appreciate wedding planners Holly Lynch of The Season Events and Tracy Hellriegel of Weddings of North Georgia for helping us compile a list of couples from which to choose. Also in this issue are tips that local brides and grooms can follow to guarantee they look and feel their very best when saying their vows. Need gift ideas for the couples or bridesmaid or groomsmen? You will find lots of great ideas from local merchants. Want a moment of fun and laughter? Be sure to read our Kids’ Corner. Students from three local schools — North Heights Elementary, Berry Elementary and Alto Park Elementary — were asked about love and marriage and their suggestions will certainly help you understand all you really need to know you learned very early. Thanks to the classroom teachers that helped us get these kids’ comments.

Rome is becoming a wedding destination community Readers will certainly enjoy Berry College professor Sandra Meek’s photographic journey to the beautiful Central American country of Belize. We want Rome Life to bring readers a look at life outside of Rome and invite you to submit your photos of travels you and your family may take. Contact Editor Severo Avila if you are travelling within the U.S. or abroad and plan on capturing images of your journey. An interesting feature on the new Forum River Center will inform and impress on you the many opportunities available for special events. This improved center is becoming a popular downtown venue and is perfectly located for all types of meetings and events. After viewing the photos in the feature, plan a visit. We think you will be surprised at the changes. Be sure to see who you know on our Social Scene pages and take a look at the fashion pages featuring three local boutiques — Spool of Dreams, Elegancia and 9 Salon. Thanks for reading Rome Life. I hope you enjoy.

A PHOTO BOOTH COULD BE JUST THE THING TO MAKE SEVERO AVILA

YOUR SPECIAL EVENT HILARIOUS AND MEMORABLE

I went to a few weddings in Rome this past wedding seaon. I was a guest a couple of ‘em and I actually “worked” at two. My friends Ryan and Tricia are photographers (with Ryan Smith Photography) and when they photograph a wedding they sometimes include a photo booth as part of the package. That’s where they set up a backdrop somewhere at the reception venue and they lay out all sorts of crazy and funny props and during the reception people come over to get their photos taken. The photos get printed out right there for the people to take with them as souvenirs from the event. It’s a pretty cute idea. Anyway, because Ryan and Tricia are busy walking around and taking photos of the bridal couple and the guests, someone has to be working the photo booth and one a couple of occasions they asked me to do it. At first I was nervous. I obviously am not a guest at the wedding but I have to show up looking professional and just sort of stand there while everything goes on around me. It was really awkward at first until the first few people started coming up to me asking about the booth and began taking photos. Then it became pretty fun. I’ve found that alchohol really helps the guests to loosen up and take great, funny photos. The first wedding at which I worked the photo booth, it became obvious very early on that the crowd (mostly college-aged) were going to be wild. It was over at the Forum River Center and it didn’t take long before guests started trickling over to the photo booth. They came as couples and then in bigger groups and it was great to see everyone having so much fun with the different props and even though they were all dressed up and lookin’ fancy, they weren’t afraid to act the fool for the camera. After copious amounts of alcohol had kicked in, they even asked me to get in a couple of the photos with em. Which I’m sure made them very confused when they sobered up the next day and saw the photo guy in their wedding shots. The other wedding where I was the “photo booth guy,” was a wedding where the ceremony and the reception was at the Forrest Place. This wasn’t as big a wedding as the Forum one but once again, as soon as people saw someone having fun at the photo booth, they rushed over to be the next in line. I think it’s the props that make the difference. These photographers had collected a wide variety of crazy

hats, swords, wigs, signs, mustaches, huge flowers and sunglasses and a variety of other items to choose from. They kept them on a table right next to the backdrop so that people could easily choose their prop of choice then switch as the photos were being taken. So at the end of the night, there were the traditional bridal photos, but I guarantee the photos that will bring the couple and their guests the biggest smiles years down the road are the photos taken at that photo booth. People were laughing and playing and having a great time and it showed. So if you wanna add a little hilarity to your wedding or special event, consider adding a photo booth. Guests get to take home a copy of the photo and you get to keep one too. It’s guaranteed to add some quirky and memorable moments to your event. And don’t forget to add alcohol.

Make sure you look perfect, on your perfect day. 200 Broad Street, Rome, GA 30161 706.234.7900

In December, 2017, Berry College professor Sandra Meek spent 10 glorious days in the small Central American country of Belize. What she found there surprised her. “I had heard it was really beautiful,” she said. “I was interested in the natural mix of coral reef and rain forest. And the cultural aspects as well, especially the Mayan ruins.” When she arrived in Belize, Meek was captivated by the natural beauty of the land and the sea. She snorkeled with nurse sharks, sting rays, fish and octopus along stunning coral reefs in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean sea. She heard the haunting calls of black howler monkeys echoing across the rainforest. “It’s just so incredible listening to them,” she said. “I could hear them calling from miles away. And it’s amazing how the communities come together to protect the monkeys by establishing a sanctuary.” Meek and her traveling companion, her sister, saw massive ancient ruins rising up from the forest floor, remnants of a once mighty Mayan civilization. And she was fascinated by the cultural diversity of the tiny nation with its distinct ethnic groups like the Garifuna, the Mestizo, the East Indians, the Creole, the Mennonites and the Maya, many of whom live much as their ancestors did hundreds of years ago.

Meek visited the Community Baboon Sanctuary, a protected area in Belize established in 1985 to help address the threats of agriculture, logging and hunting of the black howler monkey. The Berry professor said she was amazed by the efforts to protect the animals and in particular their loud calls which echo for miles across the rainforest.

She sampled the food, trying vegetarian variations of traditional dishes and said the trip was a great introduction to a place to which she feels compelled to return. “You can’t learn much about a place in 10 days but you can see how you feel about it,” she said. “I have to say that beside my experiences in Africa, there are only two times that I have said ‘I NEED to be back in this place’ and Belize is one of those.” Meek became obsessed with one particular aspect of Belizean life. “I have to go back to do research on something I was very intrigued by,” she said. “It’s about the story of the dams on the Macal River and the protests against that.” She was drawn to the struggle for development at the expense of the natural world and how many of the Belizean people there are trying to protect their natural resources in the face of industrialization. “The whole social justice issue of the dams is something I feel drawn to,” Meek said. “The environmental and the human. I Just finished filling out a grant application to go back to Belize. I want to learn more and get the people’s voices as well as the information about these things. And while she marveled at the sea and land, the birds and the monkeys, the people and their way of life, Meek managed to capture these stunning images of a country to which she says she will certainly return. Sandra Meek was fascinated by Belize and shares her photographs now with the readers of Rome Life.

Caracol is the name given to a large ancient Maya archaeological site, located in what is now the Cayo District of Belize. Not far from the Macal River, Caracol rests on the Vaca Plateau in the foothills of the Maya Mountains. The site was one of the most important regional political centers of the Maya Lowlands during the Classic Period.

The Mayan ruins, like Xunantunich, were one of the attractions that first drew Meek to Belize. The massive ancient structures rise like giants out of the rainforest and still inspire awe in visitors today.

Meek photographed this Mennonite girl who was selling peanuts on the roadside. Many people are surprised to know that Belize is home to a large, thriving community of Mennonites, many of whom still live a life largely devoid of modern technology.

A school of spotted eagle rays takes shelter near the shore, no doubt hiding from predators in deeper water.

On the way back from visiting Mayan ruins, Meek stopped at the Rio On pools, a popular attraction for locals and visitors alike, seeking a cool respite from the heat.

A trip down the Macal River provided this stunning view. Meek said one of the things that captivated her imagination and which has become an obsession for her is the story of the Chalillo Hydroelectric Dam on the Macal River which was the cause of much protest in Belize since many saw the dam as a threat to the river’s ecosystem. Meek hopes to return to Belize soon to learn more about the issue as well as to enjoy the things that she fell in love with on her first visit - the sea, the rainforest, the people and their culture.

Deep within the rainforest, ancient temples still guard their secrets. And much of Belize remains untouched and undiscovered... like a jewel.

Do you think you’ll ever get married?

How do you think your dad proposed to your mom?

Do you think girls should be the ones asking boys to marry them?

How do you know when you’re in love with someone?

Like this (He goes down to one knee on the cafeteria floor .

Boys should ask because boys like girls more than girls like boys.

I would be nervous around them.

Yeah, probably.

On a vacation at dinner. aybe he went down to one knee. I don t really know.

No, boys should ask because my momma told me.

It makes you feel wierd.

I know they weren’t expecting to get married anytime soon. He just asked her at the moment because he loved her.

Boys should because it’s just better. or the girls it ust seems awkward to have to do that. oys can be more daring, but either way it would be fine. It s been that way for a longtime and I m ust used to that.

You might feel nauseous and nervous because you don’t know what would happen. And that’s all I basically know about that.

I don’t really know because I m adopted. But I think (of his adopted parents he probably got on one knee and asked her to marry him.

No, boys should ask. It would be kinda wierd, girls sitting on one knee.

I think they went to dinner and he asked her.

I don t know. It s fine either way, I guess.

I think he proposed during a date at a nice restaurant. e gave her a letter that had a poem. The proposal was in the poem. e waited outside while she read it.

o. I feel like it s tradition for a guy to propose. irls can do it if they really want to marry a guy, but it s what they want.

That she’s pretty.

I’m not sure.

When your heart just feels something and you just know this is the person to marry.

What’s the best advice you can give someone who’s about to get married?

If you were gonna get married, where would you want the wedding to take place?

Tell them that you love them and care for them.

Universal Studios in Orlando

eah laughing . I already asked one person but I broke up with them.

Remember the ring.

At a place I really want to go... idge erry ark.

Probably, just because most girls do.

ood uck. Safe trip on your honeymoon.

ngland. I’ve always wanted to go to England - beautiful sights and talk ritish.

Yes

Whenever they’re at the wedding, get a lot of flowers and a good ring with a diamond in it.

Where my adopted parents did it.

Just be yourself.

Florida because of the beaches. Anywhere with a nice beach.

Not to do it in a lazy way, not in a Taco ell. Be real and emotional.

In a church were it is all decorated, with windows with painted glass.

aybe

I don’t think so because I have other things I want to do in my life - be a nurse in the military. I think with all the travel it would be hard to maintain a good and faithful marriage.

How do you think your dad proposed to your mom?

Do you think girls should be the ones asking boys to marry them?

How do you know when you’re in love with someone?

Do you think you’ll ever get married?

What’s the best advice you can give someone who’s about to get married?

If you were gonna get married, where would you want the wedding to take place?

I think in my brain, my momma gave my dad a ring and he said yes.

Girls should ask boys to marry them.

The way my dad is. That is how I would know.

No (thinks about is some more,) never.

I would tell her (the bride) I love her.

It would be in Rome. I want it to be in Rome because it’s where my parents are from.

My dad bought a gift and put something in it, like chocolates, and put a ring in there.

The guys should be asking girls to marry them because guys are the ones who buy the rings.

You just know. You just fall in love.

(Shrugs his shoulders), I don’t know yet.

Just always be happy with each other.

California because it’s a cool place.

No, boys should do it.

I believe in love at first sight.

He would go down on one knee. (The proposal hasn’t happened yet.) He took her out to eat in a special place. Then they went to the beach in Florida and he proposed.

He got on one knee and asked her to marry him. My dad was eating with my mom at their house and that’s when he did it.

Boys should ask

Sometimes they give you the look. They talk to you in a certain way to know. I believe in love at first sight.

The guy is supposed to ask.

When your heart feels like that person but you don’t want to tell them. And you’re afraid someone else will tell them.

Boys should ask

You get a wierd sensation when you see someone and your heart beats fast. From the way your body feels you know.

Yes, because I’m a good guy.

...Yes (Hesitatingly)

Yes

I hope I get married with someone I really, really love.

I’m happy for you and respect who you marry.

Outside in my backyard here in Rome. I would like it to be in my hometown.

If you’re gonna get married, you have to know it’s the one. And, if they aren’t, don’t do it.

At a church in Florida. And then go to the beach for the reception.

When they ask for the paper they wrote about each other (vows), say they will be the best for each other. Tell each other how they feel.

At Greater Refuge Ministries on North Broad Street (her church).

Take it cool, calm down, don’t get over-excited or you could mess it up. Enjoy the wedding and have a good time.

I’d travel to the most romantic place and set up the wedding and get married there. At an open field with lots of flowers and trees and a beautifu sky. And the end of the day and party, everyone could watch the sunset.

How do you think your dad proposed to your mom?

Do you think girls should be the ones asking boys to marry them?

How do you know when you’re in love with someone?

Love, maybe. They went to dinner.

Boys should ask. I saw on a game on a (learning) website a girl asks to marry, and I said it’s the other way around.

When you want to tell them I love you.

Do you think you’ll ever get married?

What’s the best advice you can give someone who’s about to get married?

If you were gonna get married, where would you want the wedding to take place?

Yes

Happy wedding. I don’t know what I’d say next.

Near a rocky waterfall.

Yes

I hope you have a good time with your husband. It’s important to always have a good time.

New York City. I’ve always wanted to go to New York and because it’s where my dad proposed.

They were in N.Y. city, so they had to go to dinner. He went in the city to propose.

Boys should ask.

You go out to dinner a bunch with that person.

I think they met at Applebee’s and he asked her to marry him.

Boys should ask.

His hair might look good.

Not yet. One day, maybe.

I love you and treat each other good.

A lake in Rome.

I’m not sure.

You just really like them and it would be someone you want to hang out with a lot.

I don’t know.

Go somewhere interesting for your wedding. Maybe a beach.

Somewhere cold but not too cold with a beach.

Boys should ask.

When God is telling you, you can feel it. It’s what my mom and dad say.

I know they were on vacation and they were eating dinner on a boat and he asked. He went up on a hike and said sit down for a picnic (at the House O’ Dreams on Berry’s campus) and asked her to marry him.

I was never told.

Either gender can ask.

You just kind of feel it. You’re happy to see them and nervous when you’re around them.

Yes

I don’t know.

Be kind and take it slow and be careful.

At Frost Chapel because it’s where my mom and dad got married.

Make sure they treat you right because if they don’t it’s not worth the trouble. And they should be able to like you for who you are.

In a quiet setting out in the country away from all the cars and noise.

A venue

For all seasons photos by Martin Kinkade

The Forum River Center is readying itself for the upcoming wedding season. The spacious arena can be transformed into a gorgeous ballroom accommodating groups of up to 1,000 people. The new Riverwalk ballroom has been remodeled with light, neutral colors that would fit any wedding. Function meets fashion with new lighting and enhancements giving the space a fresh, inviting and transitional feel. Highlights include floor-to-ceiling windows and a ballroom that overlooks the Oostanaula River.

The Forum River Center not only provides a venue for elegant indoor events, but can accommodate outdoor requirements as well. It offers surrounding outdoor spaces that can be converted into charming ceremony and pre-function areas.

Rotary Plaza sits riverside and has a raised concrete structure, perfect for an arch or altar with ample seating surrounding it. Bridge View Terrace sits at the foot of the Chief Joh Ross Memorial Bridge and by adding highboy tables, linens and light decor, the space makes a perfect cocktail area.

An in-house decorator can assist with any special event but The Forum River Center also has longstanding relationships with trusted vendors that can be provided to clients to create their dream event. Many of these vendors have had strong relationships with the venue since the beginning.

Since January, 2017, the venue has been able to offer a full service bar to its guests for any occasion as required. The space can be used for weddings, galas, graduations, engagement parties, corporate events, trade shows, expos, private functions and a host of other activities. The venue is also hoping to appeal to the Latin market and its staff is happy to accommodate quinceños celebrations throughout the year.

A56 BEFORE THE BIG DAY:Hers For most b rides, all of the planning and care that goes into having a perfect wedding seems to have no end — the flowers, the dress, the bridesmaids, the music, the venue, the food. So much to remember. Brides often lose themselves in all of the stress — forgetting to take care of their own personal needs that will help them look and feel their best on their wedding day.

EXERCISE: I WEIGHT MANAGEMENT: “ I believe they should begin this p rocess m onths bef ore the p lanned w edding date, ” said B rian Price, w ho is a p ersonal trainer at the H arbin Clinic V itality Center.
