On The Cover This beautiful image of the clocktower, shrouded in snow against a dazzling blue sky on a crisp winter day, was submitted by Candiss Ayer Photography. We asked Rome Life readers to send us photos of Rome and Floyd County and many of those are found throughout this issue of Rome Life. We thought this one would make the perfect cover for our November issue.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

This issue of Rome Life highlights Rome’s very best Otis Raybon

Local and area merchants abound in our community and consist of mom-and-pop operations, professionals, business service companies, auto repair shops, restaurants and bakeries, shoe shops, medical, and many more are all very important to our economy. In addition to the services they provide, these same folks provide thousands of jobs that keep Rome and Floyd County alive and vibrant. Local businesses, medical community, local, state and national government agencies work alongside along a diversified industrial community to keep more than 50,000 people employed. Our community expresses its appreciation for the contributions of their favorite people and places in a variety of ways. This Best of Rome issue of Rome Life Magazine is a reflection of how our readers feel about the folks who provide the jobs and services important to our quality of life. Each year the nominations for inclusion on the ballots grow, and this year was no different. More than 201,062 votes were cast by 10,914 participants from a printed ballot in the Rome News-Tribune or online at RN-T.com. As always, we added new categories as a result of the nomination process. It’s encouraging to watch the voting — especially in this age of online shopping — and see accolades and recognition being given to local people for the level of service they provide to make their business different and unique. The growth in the Best Of contest speaks well of the businesses and the good people that manage them daily and interact with their customers. Well-operated brick-and-mortar shops are important and sometimes go unnoticed. This year we believe they “can feel the love.” I hope as you find time to read the pages of Rome Life Magazine, you will make a personal note to stop by and offer personal congratulations to the winners. You’ll find many of your friends listed as you flip the pages. Other great features you’ll find in this issue include our ever-entertaining Kids Corner. This is becoming a highly popular feature. We are asking kids holiday-related questions and the answers are sure to bring a smile to your face. Take a look, as you may know one of the kids interviewed.

Other features include a spotlight on Rome’s Animal Rescue Foundation, family fitness, recipes, travel and several pages of beautiful images submitted by local photographers. After reading about the Best Of winners you cast votes for, I hope you will read our other features and learn more about the community you call home. Thanks for reading Rome Life Magazine.

ER

“Maybe I pulled a chest muscle?” — Lorenzo Rome, GA

Emergency symptoms are good at hiding. Not all signs of an emergency are obvious. Lorenzo realized he hadn’t pulled a chest muscle and that his difficulty breathing was actually a heart attack in disguise. Fortunately, his wife took him to Redmond’s ER. With dedicated cardiac experts and faster wait times, you can trust us for even better care. We’re here 24/7 to help you through an emergency – even the tricky ones.

There’s more to Lorenzo’s story. Visit RedmondRegional.com/Lorenzo

What are you most thankful for this holiday season? Birthdays, it’s a time where you can celebrate other peoples goodness

When we meet with family, we go to our cousins house

What foods do you think they served at the very first thanksgiving

What Thanksgiving food is your LEAST favorite?

Where do you think Santa likes to go on vacation?

What do you think your parents would like most for Christmas?

Why does Santa live all the way in the North Pole?

Doesn’t go on vacation

We pretty much have everything, love

Christmas is really cold and in the North Pole it’s really cold

Maybe the Beach

A New Car

Mostly no robbers can steal his toys

I eat everything

He comes to our houses that’s his vacation

A good day, we always have a rushing day

I don’t know

Because he loves Christmas

No vacation. He’s too busy

A day off of work

Because there are reindeer there and they are not anywhere else

Columnist AIN’T NO SHAME IN DECORATING FOR THE SEASON

SEVERO AVILA

I never understood how people got so excited about putting out their yard art for whatever season it was. I thought it was a waste of money and time when I’d drive past people’s houses and see their front porch or the front yard festooned with various pieces of art or crafts marking the upcoming holiday or season. I’m sure you’ve got those neighbors who can’t wait for an upcoming holiday to put their their flags or their scarecrow or aster bunnies. Or those people who count down the days till they can put their lighted reindeer out on the front lawn. And I don’t know if they still do it, but there’s a house in the Summerville Park neighborhoold where the owners create an entire skating rink every year for winter. They’ve got manequins out there skating around. I used to think it was really creepy - especially when I’d drive to my friend Ansley’s house late at night and I’d turn that corner and I’d see shadows lurking in those people’s front yard only to realize it was their front lawn figure skaters. O R, I’ve come to change my tune. I don’t know if it’s my old age that makes me more sentimental or that I’m just becoming a little less of a grinch, but now I get a little excited to see the seasons change not only in nature but in people’s homes as well. Now I love driving down the road or down the street and seeing the different ways people decorate for holidays. I know people complain about stores putting out holiday stuff too far in advance but there’s a part of me that loves seeing that stuff out on the store shelves and buying a few things to get a jump start on that season. Now let me clarify here that I’m not saying

10831828.indd 35

you need to be going overboard. There’s a few of y’all that need to dial it back ust a bit. You don’t need every single inflatable Disney Christmas blow-up in your front yard. And you sure don’t need a skeleton standing on every square inch of your yard come Halloween. There’s a difference between tacky and tasteful. BUT it’s wonderful to see people hanging lights or putting out flags or hanging wreaths when the time rolls around for that particular decor. It shows some holiday spirit (whatever that holiday may be). So go ahead and haul out that decor and that yard art and have some fun. It makes people smile to see that stuff. It makes your home look inviting. Ain’t no shame in a little decorating.

Relief in the

y the time Hurricane Florence made landfall back on Sept. 14 near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, 500 miles away preparations to assist those in the storm’s path had already started. Local assistance group RomeGACares can find its roots all the way back to local citizens aiding victims of Katrina back in 2005. The efforts to help out in the wake of the latest disaster were the most successful yet, according to those who were on the ground in North Carolina. Floyd County resident were able to donate cash and supplies totaling over $16,500, including 750 buckets containing items to be used in the early stages of the cleanup process. “You’re talking about 20 inches of rain,” said Sgt. Carrie Edge of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office who was on the ground in Columbus County, North Carolina. “They had first floors completely covered in some places. It was kind of surreal. I’ve lived through a flood myself, so I could totally relate to what they were experiencing. So much to clean up.” RomeGACares sent a total of two tractor-trailer loads of bucket, box fans, bottled water and more to the inland county just west of Wilmington. When Florence hit, many of the county’s 56,000 residents hadn’t even finished fully recovering from Hurricane Matthew that had affected North Carolina almost exactly two years before. The supplies collected in Floyd County left Monday, Oct. 1 for a distribution center in Columbus County where those in need lined up for miles several days in a row to get needed items. As some of the items were handed out, RomeGACares volunteers took their pickup trucks and four wheelers out into harder to reach areas. “They took us to the places where it was needed most,” Edge said. “We went to river road, roads washed out, and places only accessible by ATV.” Edge remembered one woman who was especially moved by the per-sonal messages written on relief bucket by area school children. “She had been flooded three times after coming to Columbus County to retire,” Edge recalled. “She said ‘I need you to let the children know we really appreciate that,’ pointing over to the bucket we left.”

ROME 36 - 40 - Hurricane Relief 37

10/18/2018 8:57:33 PM

Sgt. Edge was a little emotional when recalling how one woman she met who was herself battling incurable cancer refused to take food or supplies from the distribution center without exchanging her time as a volunteer. She said the lady was particularly moved by some of the buckets with fabric tied to the handles and scriptures written on them. Sheriff Tim Burkhalter recalled evenings spent with the Floyd County team of volunteers in the evenings where they slept in a local church. “We had time to talk about what we had seen and people we had talked to each day,” Burkhalter recalled. Like the citizens they were helping, the team of volunteers also did without the comforts of home during their trip, eventually getting access to showers at a community college gym. Burkhalter said what stuck out to him most was the continued interest of the school kids back home who had decorated supply buckets. “I got so many texts asking where buckets were and where they had ended up,” said Burkhalter who said he tried his best to take pictures of as many of them as he could. The majority of items taken to Columbus County from Rome were collected at the North Rome Church of God’s warehouse on North Broad Street and hauled with help from osh Roberts Trucking, Hon Industries and SouthEastern Mills, all who refused compensation. “Our citizens have an unwavering heart to help others, no matter the geographical boundaries. The absolute reason that we were able to touch these people’s lives was the support of the citizens of our community,” said Cody Waters, a county employee who volunteered to travel to North Carolina. “Many people in Columbus County, North Carolina know where Rome, Georgia is, and where our heart is as well.”

ROME 36 - 40 - Hurricane Relief 38

10/18/2018 8:57:57 PM

“We saw a lot of water damage, as well as some wind damage. The locals had seen hard times before, with hurricane Matthew affecting the area as well, yet their spirit of regrowth was overwhelming,” Waters said. “I feel like our presence uplifted the locals, we were from a town over 6 hours away, yet we genuinely cared about them. They saw that people all over the country were praying and rallying together for them.” Floyd County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain avid Thornton recalls one lady who was particularly upset about the damage to her home, but a supplies bucket with a little something extra in it helped calm her at least for a little while. “Lt. ody House got a bucket for all the court house deputies to sign,” Thornton recalled. “He decided to put an added blessing in the bottom of the bucket which was a note with a $100.” Thornton said House, who is over court services for the FCSO, got to give the bucket personally to the woman. Thornton got to meet his counterpart in avid Heller, Chaplain for the Columbus County Sheriffs Office, who praised the efforts of RomeGACares volunteers in a Facebook post. “I’m proud to have met them and spent some time with them as they came to help people that they had never met,” Heller posted on social media. Even though the local volunteers were only in North Carolina for less than three full days, the trip lest a lasting impact both in Columbus County and with those who returned to Floyd County. “This was such a rewarding trip for us all,” Sheriff Burkhalter said. “We made new friends, helped many in need, worked hard and shared the love of fellow man.” He said that RomeGACares is now set up to help with any future disasters.

Helping Seniors at Christmas

Leisa Baggett stands next to some of the Christmas gift bags she and her daughters put together for delivery through the Senior Santa program for Floyd Countians without family connections in 2017.

By Diane Wagner Leisa Baggett started teaching her daughters early that those who have should give. Sandra Baggett, 22, who’s graduating from Berry College in December, and Caitlin Baggett, 20, a Berry sophomore, have their own interests now. But every holiday season they join forces with their mom again for the Santa for Seniors program. The gift-giving initiative sponsored by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office and Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation seeks out elderly Floyd County residents without family to bring them some Christmas cheer. “We’ve been doing different things since they were little babies, had Caitlin riding in a buggy with Santa helping us pick out gifts, and they loved it,” Leisa said. “I’ve tried their whole lives to teach them there’s always sombody worse off than you.” Jimmy Allred started the Santa for Seniors program at the FCSO in 2005, after he took his grandmother back to her nursing home and discovered one little old lady who had been hoping for visitors spent Christmas there alone. He started with gifts for two seniors, then linked up with Tammy Bryant at RFPRA, who gave him 10 names the next year. The initiative has continued to grow, especially after Leisa heard about the program four or five years ago and asked her co-workers at Ball Corp. in Shannon to step up. Last year, they were able to provide gifts for over 100. “It’s not income-based,” Bryant said. “These are senior citizens who live by themselves and, for one reason or another, have no family any more. Everybody thinks about our kids at the holidays, but they forget about our isolated seniors.” Each “adopted” senior gets a gift bag with blankets, house shoes, toothpaste, soap and other personal care items. They’re also asked what they want for Christmas — in casual conversation — and surprised with the special item if possible.

ROME 43 - 45 - Senior Santa 44

10/18/2018 9:03:44 PM

“One lady at the High Rise said all she wanted was a ham,” Bryant said. “She said she wanted to bake a ham and share it with everybody. She got it.” One man forgot he had asked for overalls and his face when he opened his gift, “looked like he’d won the lottery,” she said. Another woman had a son who lived four houses down from her nursing home, but he never came to visit. “That’s the heartbeat of the whole thing,” Bryant said. “Somebody seeing somebody alone at Christmas and wanting to do something about it.” About $40 is spent on each senior through the program. While some people opt to shop for a particular senior, many more donate money. That’s where Leisa, her daughters, and her best friend Kelli Sharpe shine. The foursome goes out every Black Friday to hit the sales — bearing coupons and prepared to use every trick in the book to make the money go as far as possible. “Last year we left about 5 or 6 p.m. on Thursday, got home about 1:30 or 2 a.m., then went out again at lunchtime and stayed out all day,” Leisa said. “It was hilarious. The whole back of the car was full both times.” Sometimes they make special arrangements for gifts, as with the woman who wanted to get her hair done for Christmas. Sometimes it’s a case that makes them want to do even more. One woman’s request for toilet paper and “anything warm” caught Leisa’s attention and she asked Bryant for more information. “She was struggling to have basic necessities,” Leisa said. “So a deputy said ‘This is a woman after my own heart; she’s got her priorities in order’ and gave me another $50 to get her supplies.” After a marathon shopping spree, the four women lay out the items in the Baggetts’ home and organize an assembly-line style packing party for the gift bags. “It’s an awesome, awesome thing,” Bryant said about the group’s energy. Sandra and Caitlin have also started sponsoring seniors themselves, Leisa said, and they try to be there when the Santa for Seniors contingent goes out to distribute the gifts. “They enjoy seeing how happy everybody is,” Leisa said, launching into a story about a lady who asked for Little Debbie oatmeal cream pies and insisted on eating one immediately. “It’s really cool, because you don’t think of things like a $1 box of cream pies making so much difference to someone, but it can.” The sheriff’s office and parks and rec employees have continued their long involvement in the program, but Bryant said Leisa’s contributions have led to its expansion. Leisa credits the culture at Ball Corp. that encourages giving; manager Mary McDonald, who coordinates the initiatives at the plant; and the hearts of the people who work there. “Our guys know they’re lucky to be making the money they’re making and they want to help others in need,” Leisa said. “My family really enjoys being able to shop for the seniors, but we couldn’t do it without the generosity of the team members at Ball Rome.” To sponsor a senior, email Bryant at bryantt@floydcountyga. org or call her, 706-234-0383, or Allred, 706-291-4111. To donate, make a check out to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, 2526 New Calhoun Highway, Rome, Georgia, 30161 and earmark it Santa for Seniors.

Mini Apple Pies Pies that can be given as gifts or enjoyed by everyone at dinner. Ingredients Crust 1¼ cups all-purpose flour ¾ teaspoon salt 1/3 cup Mazola Corn Oil 3 tablespoons cold water Apple Filling 4 to 5 large apples, peeled, cored Yield: 6 pies

and chopped (about 6 cups) 1/3 cup sugar 1 tablespoon Corn Starch 2 teaspoons Ground Cinnamon 1 tablespoon Dark Corn Syrup 2 tablespoons apple juice 6 wide-mouthed, 1/2-pint jelly jars 1 teaspoon sugar

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Bake Time: 20 to 25 minutes

For Crust: Mix flour and salt in large mixing bowl. Pour oil and water into measuring cup — do not stir. Add liquids all at once to flour mix-ture. Stir with a fork until just moistened. Form dough into a ball. Roll between 2 sheets of waxed paper, forming a 14 x 12-inch rectangle. Note: Dampen work area by wiping with a wet dishcloth to prevent wax paper from slipping. Place waxed paper-covered crust on a baking sheet and refrigerate until ready to use. For Filling: Combine apples, sugar, corn starch, cinnamon, corn syr-up and apple juice in a large bowl. Mix until all apples are coated. Spray inside of jar with cooking spray. Portion apples into jars, filling to the top. Remove top layer of waxed paper from pie crust. Cut a circle the size of the jar (the jar lid makes a great template). Cut out center of crust with a small decorative cookie cutter. Carefully peel crust from waxed paper and place on filling. Repeat with remaining jars. (Only about half of the crust will be used. Place in a large plastic bag to freeze for later use.) Sprinkle pies with 1 teaspoon sugar. Place pies on a baking sheet. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until crust is lightly browned and apples are tender.

A Friend to the Animals A closer look at the Animal Rescue Foundation of Rome and Floyd County By Jeremy Stewart

T

here is no storefront or building that’s home to the headquarters of ARF — Rome and Floyd County’s own Animal Rescue Foundation. The work the seven-year-old non-profit does instead originates purely in the heart and homes of the men and women who make up its network of volunteers, a group that is happy to promote and act out the organi-zation’s mission of helping animals in all stages of need. Aileen Randall serves as vice president of ARF and has been involved in it since 2012. She and her husband have two dogs and five cats they have adopted through the years while also serving as a foster home for animals who are recovering from injuries or in between permanent homes. She recently helped care for six kittens in conjunction with the Rome-Floyd Humane Society, bottle feeding them on a regular schedule throughout the day. And although Randall lives with multiple sclerosis, she stands firm on ARF’s commitment to the well-being of four-legged friends. “I’m glad to be a part of something that takes in and does so much for

ROME 51 - 52 - ARF 51

animals. I’ve adopted quite a bit. As long as I have love to give I’ll do it,” she said. “We’re there as a safety net for animals that can’t find homes, whether they are runaways, strays or whatever. It’s for those who need someplace to go and somewhere to land.” Founded in 2011, ARF is a nonprofit designed to help the lost, ne-glected, and abused animals of Floyd County through a few different means. In a partnership with Floyd County Animal Control, the group assists the animals that are taken in by PAWS — or Public Animal Welfare Ser-vice, with emergency veterinarian care — as well as placing them in vet-ted foster homes and hopefully adoption either nearby or through working with other rescue groups. ARF also gets calls from members of the public about sick or injured animals who may be abandoned or strays. And helps take care of them and find them forever homes as well. Randall said ARF spends between $50,000 and $70,000 a year in veterinarian bills, all of which comes from donations and fundraisers held throughout the year with all of the money staying in Floyd County. It was through ARF that Randall first encountered her dog, Max. Soon after

10/18/2018 9:13:48 PM

she began working with the group, Randall went to visit the then 2-year-old male German shepherd at West Rome Animal Clinic to test his temperament after he had been taken out of an abusive situation. He had an autoimmune disease because of his treatment and the condi-tions in which he was living. “There was this poor, naked German shepherd with no hair and weighing 55 pounds. I called my husband right then and said I was not leaving without him,” she said. “Of all the medicine he was given, all it took was a change in his diet. And now he’s got a beautiful coat and is 110 pounds.” Max the German shepherd is returning that love by helping Randall with her MS, staying by her side most of the time and being there for her if she needs help standing up. “He is very sensitive to my needs,” she said. They also make sure the PAWS shelter is kept stocked with plenty of food for all of the animals that are kept there. “When we get a call they need food we put it out

ROME 51 - 52 - ARF 52

on social media and our supporters come in droves to bring them dog food and cat food,” Randall said. “We also help pet owners who may be in financial trouble to get food for their pets as well. We share our resources as much as possible so everybody who needs to benefit from it can.” In September, ARF gave dog and cat food to RomeGaCares, the group spearheaded by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office and Floyd County Emergency Management, as part of its supply drops to victims of Hurri-cane Florence in North Carolina. The group has also donated 200 pet identification microchips to PAWS. One thing that ARF tries to raise awareness of is the importance of spay and neutering animals to prevent pet overpopulation. Randall said they do a lot of education through talking with children in classes and other organizations, such as 4-H and the Boy Scouts, and also promote low-cost and affordable spay/neuter/vaccination clinics when they can. Donations through special events or its website,

www.arfromefloyd.com, are great ways for the community to support ARF, but Randall said one resource they are in desperate need of is foster homes. “We really only have three right now and I’m one of them,” Randall said. “This helps animals get used to people. There’s a lot that come in that are just yard dogs so not socialized, so a big part of it is getting them used to kids and that way when they get adopted they are used to it.” Possible candidates should have a fenced-in yard and the time to spend with the animals. ARF supplies food and covers vet bills, as well as provide transportation to and from the vet for scheduled appointments for all fostered animals. couple with two boys is certainly used to running around to try to keep up with the youngsters. For David and Jessie Herren, running after their boys, Andrew, 6 and Thomas, 4, is not only a labor of love, it’s also part of personal training. David and Jessie Herren weren’t always on the run. For David though, it does seem almost like a lifetime. His wife only picked up the sport in the last year after having their second child. Recently, both Andrew and Thomas finished the Harbin Hero Hustle one-mile fun run in their super-hero costumes, with Mom right behind them. Jessie said that getting out to road races

10831898.indd 54

like that have sort of become a family event for them. “They love it,” she said. David Herren, now a Harbin Clinic opthalmologist, started running when he was in seventh grade, playing a lot of soccer. One day he didn’t have a ride home after school so he went to his sister’s cross country team practice, borrowed a pair of shorts and ran along with the team. He didn’t like it at first, but realized he was pretty good at it. By the time he finished high school, he was a highly decorated runner at Rome High and won a scholarship to Georgia Tech.

FAMILY FUN RUN One family’s quest to stay healthy and active together By Doug Walker

“It’s been a big part of my life story,” David said. “God taught me a lot of patience in running. It requires a lot of discipline. It requires daily dedication.” The two got to know each other when Jessie would come back to Rome to see her grandfather who was a pastor at the Oak Hill Church of Christ where David and his family were parishioners. His wife just picked up the sport in the last year and is currently getting ready for the Chicago Half marathon. She ran a half-marathon in Nashville this spring. “It was hard, I’m not going to lie. I didn’t train very well for the hills. But I did it. I completed it. Both my sister and I completed it,” Jessie said. “David took a back seat on this one so he’s been on the sidelines encouraging me which I appreciate so much.” “Running became a way for me to socialize,” Jessie added. “I was just ready to invest in myself.” Since having her first son, she had been completely focused on starting her family but decided now was the time to do so something for

10831898.indd 55

herself. In fact, David said the two of them run together primarily when he’s showing her a new trail, such as one of the wooded routes David would run on the Berry campus. He said they tried running together early on when she first decided to pound the pavement. “She realized that she likes doing it for herself,” David said. “If she is trying to do a particularly difficult run I may try to run with her some, but in general I try to listen and be supportive.” Jessie said running is really a fun activity and she’s not only getting healthy but she’s getting to spend time with her friends. She’s part of a group of eight to 10 women who call themselves the Sole Sisters. “It has become such a fun way to exercise and it’s been so motivating,” Jessie said.” The group ran the Tillman Clocktower 5k Road Race together back in August. Like their dad, both of the boys are into soccer which also involves a whole lot of running. “They know how successful Daddy was with running and they think it’s an awesome thing to

do because Daddy did it,” Jessie said. “They just enjoy doing it with us.” Both of the boys have completed a two-mile run. “I am not overly encouraging (the boys to run) because running is difficult,” David said. “At this stage I just want it to be fun for them. If they choose to take up running seriously later on, that would be great.”

or certain situations in life, it is best for people to have someone else take up the battle for them, or at the least, provide them with sound advice and direction. Those types of situations are often best handled by a lawyer, and for one of the best in town, a person needs to look no further than Bill Byington. Byington is a partner in the law firm of Cox, Byington, Twyman, & Johnson, LLP – a full service law firm located at 711 Broad Street. The firm’s areas of expertise include criminal defense, estate planning, banking law, family law, business law and litigation as well as personal injury. Byington’s focus is primarily real estate, probate and Social Security disability law. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973 from the University of Georgia, graduating magna cum laude. Byington said he originally intended to pursue a degree in history and become a history teacher. His college advisor told him not to do it. Instead he encouraged him to go to law school. The one year between his sophomore and junior years in college cemented that future pursuit. Byington was a member of the National Guard, and he spent several months during that one year in service with the Army. “I thought about it while I was sitting there peeling potatoes,” he said. “Peeling potatoes and running. …. I thought that law school might be a good idea.” Byington graduated from UGA’s law school and was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1976. Originally from Covington, he was hired straight out of law school to work with longtime Rome attorney Frank Jones. Not long after joining Jones, Byington said he received a call from a law firm from his hometown. It was a law firm he had previously really wanted to join. They told him they wanted him to come work for them, that it was time for him to come home.

Byington responded with, “I am home.” And he’s been here ever since. “Rome has just been so great to me and my family,” he said. While here, he has served as a United States Magistrate Judge, an assistant county attorney and counsel for the Rome City Schools. In addition, Byington is the Floyd County Administrator, which involves a lot of work in probate court. Byington is also very active with his community, serving with Habitat for Humanity, the board of directors for the Chiaha Fair and the Rome Rotary Club and he is also a past president of the Rome Bar Association. Byington is thrilled to be recognized by his community in the Best of Rome competition. “It’s a great honor,” he said. “Who wouldn’t be pleased by that? I’m not a native … so to be chosen is a real honor for me.” Byington said he would not be successful without his staff. “Quite frankly, this staff I’ve got, they are so important to me,” he said. “They do the real work and I’m just a pretty face. Well, I’m a notso pretty face. I just show up. They don’t get the credit they should get.”

People give a lot of thought to the way the inside of their homes look – renovating their kitchens and bathrooms and decorating their living rooms and bedrooms to create useful and inviting spaces. But they may forget about their outdoor spaces – or not know what to do with them. This is where the professionals at Watters & Associates Landscaping can help. A primary focus of the business is creating and maintaining beautiful garden areas for clients. “People like coming home and seeing the finished product,” said Michael McRay, chief operating officer. “They get to enjoy their yard instead of working in it.” As New York Times Magazine writer Michael Pollan noted in “Second Nature: A Gardner’s Education”: “A garden should make you feel you’ve entered privileged space – a place not just set apart but reverberant – and it seems to me that, to achieve this, the gardener must put some kind of twist on the existing landscape, turn its prose into something nearer poetry.” Owner Ed Watters founded the company in January 1993 as a design-installation-maintenance business to serve the Rome area. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture. His company has grown to serve a great deal of the northwest Georgia area and parts of Atlanta. Watters offers services in lawn maintenance, landscape design, cleanup, pool remodeling and pool installation, patio design, outdoor fireplaces, outdoor kitchens and stonework. In addition, the landscape company also carries various accessories and lines of outdoor furniture to help homeowners or businesses complete their outdoor spaces. Customers also may set up a schedule of regular service for their landscaping from Watters. Whether the job is reworking one small yard or one giant space, the crews at Watters are up to the task. Their designers work to combine the right levels of line, form, texture and color with plants and materials to create a long-lasting and low-maintenance landscape. McRay credits the exceptional level of customer service offered by the Watters’ highly trained staff and crews and the high quality work for the company’s continued success. “If you call Watters, you’re going to get the best. ...” he said. “We pride ourselves on delivering value for what the customer expects.”

Customers often express great thanks for the hard work put in by the Watters Landscape crews. “[They] went above and beyond,” one client wrote. “I can’t believe it is the same house!” “We’re thankful for our community we’re in,” McRay said. “They’re the ones who’ve made us successful. And we’re thankful for each one of the staff and crews in the field.” More information about lawn care services, packages, design and building are available by calling Watters & Associates Landscape at 706-234-5482. The business operates from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. More information, including photos of completed projects, is available online at www.watterslandscape.com. Untitled-4 1

We joined forces with Ray Harris Catering in 2014. Ray had been catering for more than 20 years when combined efforts.” Harris has a background in sales and as a stockbroker, but it his talent as a self-taught cook that makes him so successful in his current role. “Food should look as good as it tastes,” Harris said. MSP Attorneys make their home in offices at historic Bridgepoint Plaza, which is quite fitting, as the law firm itself is quite historic – calling Rome home for more than a century. It is the oldest law firm in Floyd County. The McRae, Smith, Peek, Harman & Monroe, LLP law firm – better known as MSP – was established by George Edmonson Maddox and Col. William S. McHenry in 1899. It once again tops the list for Rome’s best law firm. The attorneys offer their services for a wide array of legal areas including corporate law, family law and domestic relations, creditor rights, bankruptcy, personal injury, wills, trusts and estate, workers’ compensation, criminal defense and real estate – just to name a few. “We carefully review the details of each case, evaluating the strengths and weaknesses and discovering details others may have missed,” as is noted on the company website. “We will assemble a case and customize it to your exact circumstances and needs.” The firm operated for many years under the name “Smith, Shaw, Maddox,” and under the leadership and professionalism of the three attorneys in the practice – Oscar Smith, Charles Shaw and James Maddox – MSP was established as the leading law firm in Northwest Georgia. Over the years, attorneys affiliated with the firm have served in a wide range of capacities in the judicial, legislative and executive branches of state and national government. For example, Griffin Bell was the 72nd Attorney General of the

8/1/2018 12:16:13 PM

United States and served under President Jimmy Carter. Norman Fletcher was the Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court for four years until he retired in 2005. And Walter J. Mathews, served as the Chief Judge of the Rome Judicial Circuit. In 1999, MSP expanded to expand its geographic base and open an office in Cedartown under the guidance of attorneys Michael McRae and Robert Monroe. On the website www.lawyers.com, MSP Attorneys has a rating of five stars out of a possible total of five. The firm also has earned five stars on Google. “I was fortunate enough to work with Mr. Linton Johnson on a very serious case I had pending,” said reviewer Danielle Duensing. “I was living out of state and had to minimize my travel to Georgia. Through his diligence, effort, and expertise, Mr. Johnson was able to settle my case beyond what I was even hoping for. He was also able to negotiate a plan that I only had to travel once! He is very patient and explained the process at every step of the way. Hopefully I will never need the services of a lawyer again, but if I do, Mr. Johnson will certainly be my first call. I would recommend him to my friends and family as well. He made a very painful experience tolerable. Google reviewer Sara Reese described them as “one of the best and most respected law firms around. I highly recommend them for any of your legal needs. I have known this group of attorneys for years and they are the best at what they do.”

With a local business history that dates back more than a century, Garner & Glover is Floyd County’s oldest locally owned independent insurance agency. Originally founded in 1874 as “The Yancey Agency”, Garner & Glover Company acquired its current name in 1926. The company’s services include personal insurance, business insurance, life and employee benefits coverage, as well as risk management that help people protect their assets. As an independent insurance agency, Garner & Glover offers a wide range of insurance options from private insurance companies to meet clients’ personal and business needs. We are very blessed to have extremely educated and experienced employees,” said Matt Sirmans, company president. “We are also very fortunate to have great clients that appreciate quality service.” The business prides itself on its high levels of service. “Garner & Glover Company has been built based on performance for our clients,” notes the company’s website. “Year after year we retain over 95 percent of our clients in each department.” Garner & Glover can credit much of its success to its use of a team approach for clients. There are different groups of specialists who work as teams to tailor policies to each business or person. The company keeps performance standards for each of its departments and invests heavily in employee education and professional development. Employees foster strong relationships by keeping a personal approach. For example, as noted on the company website, Garner & Glover believes that “you should have a person to answer the phone and assist you with your needs. We don’t play music or commercials or have you sit through voice prompts on hold, because we don’t want you on hold. We want your needs addressed as quickly and efficiently as possible.” For personal insurance, there is always a local agent to meet with whenever face to face time is needed or preferred. For business clients, Garner & Glover will go out and visit them as needed. Many business customers are outside of Rome, all over the state, as well as the Southeastern region and beyond. While employees are diligent to stay focused on their clients’ needs, they also make time to get out in the community and give back.

his year marks the first time since 2013 that the Atlanta Braves won the National League East. The roster is full of young talent – some of those players getting their first taste of Braves baseball here in Rome at State Mutual Stadium with the Rome Braves, Atlanta’s Single A team. The Rome Braves recently were recognized for being the top choice for family fun for area residents “Fans come to State Mutual Stadium, some as far as 60-plus miles away and [from] five surrounding counties, to see future major league stars,” said Jim Jones, assistant general manager for the Rome Braves. “Since 2003, fans have seen players like Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies, Brian McCann, Freddie Freeman, Johan Comargo, Julio Teheran, Craig Kimbrel and many more play in Rome. On any given night in Atlanta, six of the nine players in the starting line-up all enjoyed playing time at State Mutual Stadium.” When Atlanta Braves players end up on the disabled list and need to go through a rehabilitation game or two, often they land at State Mutual Stadium because of its proximity to SunTrust Park. On these kinds of evenings, large crowds predictably fill the stands. Children press against the short wall bordering left field, hoping to get a closer look at their major league heroes or sneak an autograph from an up-and-coming ball player. Whether a person is trying to choose their food and beverages or special areas to visit or from which to watch the game, there is certainly something for everyone. “State Mutual Stadium is recognized as one of the best facilities in the minor leagues and offers fans a Major League experience at a Minor League price tag,” Jones said. “Great atmosphere, delicious food options, the Kids’ Zone, mascots and a safe environment make the Rome Braves a ‘go to’ place in the spring and summer.” Lacie Clonts has spent the last four years as the on-field announcer for the Rome Braves and will be returning again in 2019. One might call it a dream job. “I love every aspect of my job,” she said. “Being out there on that microphone getting the crowd pumped up, that is my

passion. But the people there are what ignite that passion – they make my job fun. I also love working with so many wonderful and talented people. We really are like one big family. When I go to work, it doesn’t even feel like I’m going to work. It feels like I’m going home.” Clonts interacts with fans during each and every game. In addition to rallying the crowd for the home team, she hosts adults and children on the field to play games when the players are switching sides. She also spends time visiting with fans in the stands, getting to know the regulars and those who are new to the Rome Braves experience. “It is such an intimate environment,” Clonts said. “Everybody knows and loves everybody. When you enter State Mutual Stadium you and your family become a part of our Rome Braves family. It’s a great place to go for affordable, family-friendly fun.”

When it comes to shopping for fashion close to home, Snazzy Rags is a consistent favorite of locals. And just like last year, area residents have voted the store as a favorite place to go find clothes and accessories for women. Rome’s Brooke Brown Nolan always loved shopping at Snazzy Rags. She loved it so much that she and her husband, Brad, purchased the business in 2010. “I had a ‘passion for fashion’ at a very young age,” Nolan said. “I always picked out my mom’s and her friends’ outfits when I was in the first and second grade when they were going out. … “I knew by high school that I wanted to own my own business. I went to college to study marketing and worked at a women’s boutique where I learned the ins and outs of fashion and confirmed my passion for this business. I have a super supportive husband who believed in me and supported my dream.” With Nolan’s eye for fashion and smart business sense, Snazzy Rags – which was initially opened 25 years ago – quickly outgrew its location on Glen Milner Boulevard and found a larger location in the historic 400 block of Broad Street about four years ago. This building was built in 1901 and holds so much history,” Nolan said. “Over the last 116 years our building has been a home to many businesses but this is and will be Snazzy Rags forever home.” Snazzy Rags offers women’s clothing, shoes, accessories and gifts. “I strive to bring brands and products to Rome that are specific to Snazzy Rags,” Nolan said. “We carry brands such as Judith March, KUT from the Kloth, Ivy Jane, Uncle Frank and so many more that are unique and only available at our store.” The store sells tops, bottoms, dresses, jewelry, purses and footwear. There are all different types of price ranges, and Nolan strives to make her business a place where women can shop for any and every occasion. “Downtown Rome, Georgia, is our one and only location,” Nolan said. “Although Rome is our home store we want people all around the world to wear these amazing brands. For those who suffer regularly or seasonally with allergies, symptoms are downright annoying. But for many patients, including those who also experience asthma, symptoms also can be confusing, overwhelming and especially frightening. A diligent, knowledgeable nurse practitioner makes all the difference with people trying to navigate these issues. Amie Green, who works with Dr. David Carlton at the Rome office of the Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Clinic, recently was recognized as one of the top nurse practitioners in all of Rome. Green joined the Rome office of Atlanta Allergy & Asthma in June 2016 and has been making a positive difference in the lives of her patients from the very beginning. The symptoms of allergies can take many forms – some of which include congestion, sneezing, watery eyes, itching, rashes, hives, swelling and difficulty breathing. Asthma is a reversible physical condition in which a person’s airways become swollen and constricted, producing coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing. The most severe allergic and asthmatic reaction is anaphylaxis. This is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that usually occurs within seconds or minutes after a person is exposed to something to which he or she is allergic. The condition cases the immune system to release a flood of chemicals that can send a person into shock – a sudden loss of blood pressure, narrowing of airways, a rapid and weak pulse, nausea and vomiting. It requires immediate medical treatment. This is why diagnosis and treatment of allergies and asthma are critical for patients. As part of the Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Clinic network, Green helps diagnose, treat and manage patients with nasal allergies, asthma, sinus disease, food allergies, hives, eczema, insect sting allergies and deficiencies in the immune system that lead time problems with these types of physical conditions. She and Dr. Carlton perform testing for environmental allergens, foods, insect venoms and some medications. Customized treatment plans may include environmental changes, medicine or allergy immunotherapy, a therapy that gradually reduces a patient’s sensitivity to an allergen and builds tolerance to their allergy triggers through the use of allergy shots, allergy tablets or allergy drops placed under the tongue.

“Dr. Carlton along with Amie and their staff are known for their kindness and ability to listen to patients in order to make the most accurate diagnosis,” said Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Medical Director, Dr. David Tanner. “Listening and understanding is the first step in developing treatment plans that can greatly improve the patients’ health and quality of life. They see patients of all ages and often have the pleasure of getting to know entire families – even several generations.” Green received a master’s degree in nursing from Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., and her certification as a family nurse practitioner from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Prior to her certification, she worked as a registered nurse for seven years in a hospital setting. Her focus there was in cardiovascular care. Green is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She has lived in Rome for the last eight years with her husband, Matt. They have one daughter. Untitled-4 1

When people look great, it helps them feel great. The employees at Seven Hills Salon show tremendous skill in achieving this for their clients. Because of this, it is no wonder that people have rewarded them by choosing them as the best salon in Rome. From Google to Facebook and websites scattered between, Seven Hills Salon consistently scores high ratings from patrons. “I do believe we have the best and friendliest staff in Rome,” owner Kim Russell said. “We are very humbled to win.” Comments from customers show just how much they appreciate their work. Lisa Stansell wrote a review of Seven Hills after having them help her get ready to renew her wedding vows. “This is one of the best [group] of ladies in Rome, Ga.,” she wrote. Stansell said that the staff took such good care of her and that they made her hair and makeup for her special day amazing. Russell herself has a solid foundation as a salon owner. She has been working in the hair styling business for the past 30 years after graduating from Coosa Valley Cosmetology in 1987. In August, she and her staff celebrated the decade anniversary for the salon. She and her husband, Chyanne, opened the salon in 2008 after they learned the salon in the existing space was going out of business. They named it Seven Hills Salon in keeping with the historic location of the business. “I love being in historic downtown Rome,” Russell said. “I’m We’ve got a spot for you... able to provide a family friendly atmosphere for our customers to relaxShort and enjoy pampered.” termbeing or long term, let us help

There are nine stylists, one assistant and one makeup artist serving clients at the salon, which is located on the ground floor of the historic Hawthorn Suites building. The group cuts hair for men, women and children alike. Russell said the staff’s goals are to make sure they stay current with the latest cuts and colors. They often attend or host classes o their stylists can keep up with new products and styles. “We are also very good at formal hair and makeup,” Russell said. The staff’s work is not limited to the salon – employees also see an importance of giving back to their community. For the last 10 years, salon staff members have come in on a Monday – an off-day for the salon – to specifically cut hair for children from Model Elementary School around Christmastime. “We like giving back to the community,” Russell said. “These kids are precious, and we enjoy doing this every year. Our wonderful customers got involved last year by donating money and gifts so each child had a book, board game and a very nice goody bag. One of our customers even dressed as Santa to make this day special.” Russell describes her staff as “one big family,” and said she and all of those work at the salon feel blessed to be there. “We have a beautiful salon with a wonderful atmosphere, and we feel that we have the best customers,” she said. Actually nobody can do a better job, no matter the price. Great customer service, and great follow up service. Thanks for the value you have added to our home.” “Stephen and his crew did an excellent job for us,” customer John Harkins said in his online review. “We had them cut and remove 12 trees, grind the stumps, install an irrigation system and lay new sod in our front yard. The result was amazing. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.” Whether people are building a new home or making over their outdoor space, Walker’s is committed to designing a landscape that enhances the property. “From adding color with flowers to a whole property master plan, we can make it happen,” Walker’s website notes. “We are personally committed to ensuring you the highest level of service possible that only a locally owned and operated company can provide. enderson & Sons is one of the few independent, family-owned funeral homes in this part of the state. And for the Hendersons, the idea of “family” has been the driving force behind their service to others. Founder J. Paul Henderson always taught his family to treat others as family and that if you take care of God’s people, God will take care of you. For almost 60 years the Henderson family has worked under that premise with the promise of personal care and attention to each family needing their services. “[Our purpose] is to serve the families of Northwest Georgia when they lose a loved one. …” Wesley Henderson said. “I am part of the third generation of the Henderson family that is continuing our grandfather’s legacy of treating families with care and compassion during one of the toughest times in their lives.” Planning the last arrangements of a loved one is a process that just about everyone will have to face in their lifetime, and the Hendersons know that their business is one that people don’t want to have to use. “You are usually forced into it by experiencing one of the most devastating losses imaginable – the loss of a loved one,” said Barry Henderson, president and CEO. Whether it is a simple disposition or more elaborate celebration of life, Henderson & Sons’ staff assists from the first call until after the service is completed. “Our main priority is to take care of hurting families

and help them honor the lives of their loved ones,” Wesley said. “Regardless of how big or small of a service you wish to have, we can accommodate all families of all different faiths and walks of life.” And with their pre-planning program, staff members can guide individuals in planning the details of what they want for themselves after death so family members do not have to make those types of decisions while their grief is so strong. “Many people do not realize that you can make all of your final arrangements in advance and save your family and loved ones the burden of having to make these decisions during a very difficult time,” Wesley said. “It only takes about an hour of your time and doesn’t cost a thing.” Henderson & Sons has three spacious, modern and conveniently-located facilities to serve the residents of northwest Georgia. There is the original south chapel in Lindale, the north chapel in Armuchee, and with the recent acquisition of their Oaknoll Chapel (located directly across from Oaknoll Memorial Gardens), they now can offer their same trusted, compassionate service at a convenient location for their West Rome and East Alabama residents. They own and operate Rome Memorial Park South, a perpetual care cemetery with its own cremation garden designed specifically for those that choose cremation. Henderson & Sons also operate the only onsite crematory in Floyd County at the north chapel, assuring clients that loved ones will never leave their care. “Barry Henderson, his family and employees go out of their way to provide excellent service,” Dale McKinney said. “We have used them for my brother-in-law, father and … my mother’s funeral. We have never had anything but the best service.”

here aren’t too many people who get excited thinking about going to a doctor for dental work, but if the visit is necessary, it’s always best to have a top notch person performing the work to make the experience as good as possible. Dr. Robert K. Hunt of Riverside Oral & Facial Surgery, P.C., is one of the first doctors people in Rome often call when they need help. Some of those calls come from longtime patients. Others may have never met Dr. Hunt or his members of his staff previously. One of Hunt’s Facebook reviews includes comments from Margaret Linda, who had to see him unexpectedly. “I was an emergency visit and I am so a very nervous patient concerning dentists,” Linda said in her review. “Dr. Hunt and his staff put me at ease and took care of my bad tooth. I like that he put me to sleep to do the work. I don’t want to see what’s being done. He called to check on me that evening, and I appreciate his concern. [I] hope I don’t need them anytime soon, but if I do, that’s where I’ll go.” Hunt, who was raised in the Atlanta area and lives in Acworth, has worked in Rome for the past 13 years. He is Rome’s only oral surgeon who has both medical and dental licenses. He received his doctor of dental surgery from the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1985 and his medical degree from the University of Alabama in 1994. He completed a four year oral and maxillofacial surgery residence at the Medical College of Georgia in 1989. In 1994-1995, he then did one year of general surgery, and facial cosmetic surgery fellowship. He has been practicing oral and maxillofacial surgery since 1985 and cosmetic surgery since 1995. The goal of Hunt’s practice is “to provide the very best oral and facial surgery, dental implant surgery, facial cosmetic surgery and facial skin care available in Northwest Georgia,” he said. With respect to oral surgery, Hunt and his team offer services including dental implants, wisdom teeth removal, orthodontic related surgery, surgery for oral and facial trauma, surgery for oral and facial tumors and cysts, corrective jaw surgery, treatment for facial skin cancer and treatment for snoring and sleep apnea. Facial cosmetic services include, but are not limited to, Botox injections, chin and jaw implants and enhancements, facial cheek implants, ear reduction and ear lobe repair, eyelid surgery, eyebrow lifts, neck lifts, face lifts, lip enhancement reductions, rhinoplasty, chemical peels, scar reduction and facial and neck liposuction.

“We pride ourselves on providing exceptional care to each of our patients by utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and techniques,” Hunt said. “We have a 3-D CT Scan and a hospital grade operating room. Our team strives to make the process as simple and painless as possible while providing our patients with the safest and most current procedures available today.” Hunt and his team’s work and professionalism have made a lasting impression on the practice’s patients. “I can’t stress enough about how wonderful this place is from the staff front and back and in between!” said Tonya Oliver Knight, who reviewed Dr. Hunt’s practice on social media. “I’m super scared of dentists but Dr. Hunt is the best. How could anyone ever go anywhere else? I’m so blessed to have been a patient there.” Untitled-4 1

A good night’s sleep is the foundation for a good day – and a good mattress is crucial to both. The Big Mattress Outlet, located on Shorter Avenue in West Rome, looks modest from the outside but it boasts a varied inventory of comfy mattresses for every type of sleeper, making it a favorite of locals when they are searching for better ways to improve their sleep. It is owned by Kelly and Joe Charles. “Before opening BMO, I spent almost 15 years as an operations manager for the Simmons Bedding Company,” Kelly said. “In that capacity, I oversaw the liquidation of overstock bedding inventory for 15 manufacturing facilities and warehouses and as many as 30 satellite outlet locations. Of course I learned much about the bedding industry itself, and how to legitimately save consumers hundreds - even thousands - on their bedding purchases. As a result of this experience, I gained connections around the country that enable us now to obtain top quality product at pennies on the dollar.” “While Simmons was a great company and I truly loved my job there, I’m just a small town north Georgia girl and never considered myself a ‘corporate type,’” she said. “I had always dreamed of owning my own business. In 2012, the time was right and I made the transition to open my own store in Rome.” In 2015, the couple opened a second store in Calhoun. Both locations have been wildly successful, and there are plans to open a third location in the near future.

The Big Mattress Outlet even sells high-end bedding pieces like Beautyrest Black, Stearns& Foster, Kluft and Aireloom, for as much as 90 percent off regular retail prices. There are several reasons why the prices can be as much as half of other stores’ “sale” prices. Items may not be in perfect condition. Mattresses may have some cosmetic blemishes which are usually the result of mishaps during shipping. Furthermore, the owners do not spend money on advertising, which goes into the costs consumers pay. Inventory management also helps keep prices down. They have multiple suppliers and they buy in bulk, both of which help them negotiate lower prices. And their inventory is just that – their inventory and their only inventory. “What you see in inventory is what you get,” Kelly said. “If you like a mattress on the floor, that’s the only one you’re taking home. We don’t have the ability to order specific product. This means that our suppliers do not have the expense of processing small orders for us. These savings are, again, reflected in our cost.” Superior customer service also has also helped make it a favorite store for locals. “For many customers, mattress shopping is a daunting task,” Kelly said. “We aim to make it an enjoyable experience. We insist on a customer-first, low-pressure and comfortable environment where the customer is made to feel at home. … Customers who have shopped around are usually surprised at the difference, not only in the price tags but in the entire shopping experience.” .

y age standard in business, Salmon Funeral Home is still very, very young – being open only a year and a half. But owner Trey Salmon and his staff are definitely doing something right because they have been voted runner-up for best funeral home for the second year in a row. Working in the funeral business requires a heart to serve others, and Salmon believes he has a calling to serve and minister to local families in their time of deepest despair. “We are dedicated to ensuring that each funeral reflects the unique life of the deceased and, at the same time, is meaningful for those that are left behind,” he said. “All of our attention will be devoted to making our funeral home the best it can be in terms of satisfying the needs of our friends and neighbors in the community.” Salmon started working for his family when he was in the ninth grade, but he felt like his duty was something entirely different. Salmon was offered an opportunity to work part time as a funeral service apprentice with the old Jennings Funeral Home when he was in college. He then went on to Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Decatur and got his funeral director’s license. Salmon joined Good Shepherd Funeral Home in West Rome and worked as an embalmer and ran the daily operations of the business. “So I had a good background in the business prior to opening this one,” Salmon said. “I also have excellent mentors and family members who have helped me make decisions along the way. It is a learning process and I have learned that you have to approach every situation that comes to you with an open mind.” He said he does not view what he does as a business. “We’re not a business, we’re a family,” Salmon said. “In your time of need, why turn to a business when you can lean on a family that is deeply rooted in the Rome community?”

“We go above and beyond for each family we serve – not because this is our business, but because it’s our way of life – our family is here for yours,” he said. Salmon is very appreciative of the willingness of families to entrust the care of their loved ones to him and his staff. He said he is thrilled to be voted runner-up in his category for the second time in such a short time span of being open. “With all the competitors in this industry that have been here for decades, to receive this recognition, I am truly thankful,” he said. “It feels like first place.” Salmon has a unique connection to the building that houses his business. At one time when his church – Sherwood Forest Baptist – was being renovated, the congregation used the chapel at the funeral home when it was Fred Talley’s. “When we were having Sunday night services, I would ask my parents if I could ‘go to the bathroom,’ which ended up as me taking an unsupervised tour of the funeral home,” Salmon said. “So I kind of have a special connection to the building. Also, while I was growing up, my childhood home was being built at the same time the funeral home was being built and by the same person. I think God had a plan for me way back then.”

The Renaissance Marquis has been a trusted assisted living facility for hundreds of seniors in the past several years, offering a full range of helpful services in a secure, attentive, home-like environment for those needing a senior living community, independent living community, assisted living or Alzheimer’s memory care. Staff members consider themselves blessed to carry out their work and serve the residents in their care. “We think you’ll notice immediately that Renaissance Marquis is a reassuring and uplifting place for seniors to spend some of the best years of their lives,” says executive director Ben Baker. Baker believes there is something that sets Renaissance Marquis apart from other senior living centers. “We are one big family,” Baker said, “We have multiple group activities each day that allow all of our residents to come together and enjoy each other’s company. We work hard to ensure our resident’s well-being and their family’s peace of mind through a rich array of recreational, educational, spiritual and social activities.” The facility boasts some of the largest senior living apartment suites in north Georgia, along with a specialized memory care wing called The Harbor. “The Harbor is the result of years of planning and development with experts and researchers in the field of memory loss,” Baker said. “The overall theme, design, colors, furniture, and common areas all reflect a 1950’s theme to remind our residents of happier times.” One of the big concerns many families and seniors have about any facility is the staff and their qualifications. “Our team members are our greatest asset,” Baker said. “Our care and leadership team are focused on giving quality care to our seniors. Our in-house and external training programs ensure that our team has the tools and training necessary to give the best care and services. Our in-depth hiring process ensures that we hire the most qualified candidates. That selective hiring process ensures that we have a staff with higher than average tenure. We believe that the best way for us to give our residents the best care possible is to hire candidates who share our vision and train our team members above the state requirement.” Staff members partner with each resident to customize the education, support and services he or she needs to help maintain, and many times improve, their health and well-being. They will find many opportunities to follow their individualized plan

through social interaction, balanced nutritional choices, physical activity, and spiritual involvement.” The facility is located on 11 acres across from Georgia Highlands College and was voted one of the top in its class in Rome this year. “It is a hard decision to leave your loved one in the care of someone else. …” Gail Kilgore Smith said in her Facebook review after moving her father-in-law to the Renaissance in February. “We have felt very comfortable and love the staff. Everyone has been so helpful. The staff has a patient spirit about them. They have all been so sweet with my father-in-law. We feel that this was a blessing from God to have been able to get him here.”

When people are happy, confident or trying to make a good first impression, one of the first things people do is smile. But sometimes people need a little help making their smile look the best it can be. That’s where the expertise of Pridemore & Cox Orthodontics can help – expertise that has won the practice top honors among Rome residents nine times, including this year. Dr. Ben Pridemore started his orthodontics practice in 1967, and Dr. Ryan Cox took over the practice in 2012. Cox graduated magna cum laude with honors from the University of Georgia in 2005 and was first in his class at the Medical College of Georgia, graduating in 2009. “We love what we do and aim to have fun, make you laugh, earn your trust and deliver WOW service,” Cox said. Cox attributes the practice’s success to three areas: patient experience, expertise and technology and care for the community. “From the moment you walk in our front door, our team will make sure you have the best orthodontic experience in northwest Georgia,” Cox said. “From the coffee bar, the adult waiting lounge, the arcade and children’s movie room and free swag to the genuine connections and personalized care, we want our office to feel like a second home.” “Four down and one to go!” wrote Lori Walker in an online review of Pridemore & Cox. “Dr. Pridemore and Cox have successfully beautified four of my five children’s smiles. I equate our experience in the office with time spent in Disneyland! All of the staff is cheery, my kids are so happy to wait because of all the games and entertainment. The atmosphere is bright and pleasant and the adult waiting room is a retreat. It may not take much to make the mom of five happy, but Pridemore & Cox had us at hello!” Pridemore & Cox offers the latest technology with 3-D xrays, 3-D printing and 3-D digital scanning. Their digital impression system replaces the discomfort with traditional putty impressions. “We are also a nationally recognized office based on the five publications of our patient results on the cover of the American Journal of Orthodontics,” Cox said, adding that he and Dr. Pridemore are known for their artistically designed finishes, “with defined smiles which fit each individual’s face.” “Pridemore & Cox has an amazing staff who is friendly and really makes you feel comfortable with every visit,” Randall Carnes wrote in a review for Google. “I was not the type to smile a lot. But after treatment and the amazing results, I smile more and more. I would

recommend them to anyone of any age. Five stars to your team.” Regarding the aspect of the practice’s care for the community, Cox said the staff wants to make a positive impact on people’s lives. This includes involvement on community boards, sponsoring local race, sporting events and schools as well as providing free orthodontic treatment through Cox’s organization, Smile for a Lifetime. Cox also has been serving the global community, with seven dental mission trips to countries such as Peru, Trinidad and Tobago and Mexico. “We give back in whatever way we are able,” Cox said.

A family doesn’t keep a company in business for more than half a century without having the know-how to be successful. And that’s just what the Dempsey Auction Company is – successful. The business builds its solid work and reputation on the foundation of three generations of auctioneers dating back to 1943. The auction company itself has been in business for 52 years, founded in 1965 by Sproull Dempsey Sr. Dempsey Auction is one of the South’s oldest and most recognized auction companies and has conducted thousands of live public real estate auctions for properties in this area. “We are a third generation family business based in Rome,” said Lou Dempsey, company president and founder’s grandson, “so we have the luxury of knowing most people and a little something about the local real estate market.” He took over the reins of the family business in February of this year. With the exception of five years he spent studying at Auburn University, the youngest Dempsey has spent 48 years in Rome. He said one of his favorite things about his hometown is the small town atmosphere coupled with the community’s progressive, forward thinking. “I feel we have a strong city and county leadership that [is] working to improve the quality of life in Rome and Floyd County,” he said. According to a recent article from the website www.realestate. com, buying properties through auction are growing in popularity, especially for those interested in a bargain. Some properties are often sold as the result of foreclosure. A property auction for a foreclosed property helps the lender recover the balance of a loan from a borrower who defaulted on their mortgage. Auctions can be for small homes, homes that are in a state of disrepair, luxury homes, new housing developments or commercial properties. Dempsey’s Auction Company is no different. The business is responsible for marketing, selling and closing of property sales for the highest price possible. Auctions can be done one of two ways. The first is publicly – live and in person. The second is over the internet. Internet auctions are often favored by individuals who are looking to buy property for investment only. Dempsey Auction Company has auctions both in person and on line.

In an article published in the Rome News-Tribune in February of this year, Dempsey said that the company would be conducting most auctions on a public basis. “We’re going back to the conventional ways of selling land at auction – being on site with live auctions and meeting with our sellers and buyers face to face,” he said. “We want to go a more personal approach. … We’ll do some internet stuff but will do primarily live, on-site auctions.” “A house, a recreational property, a second home, vacation home or farm, something like that is an emotional buy, but all emotion is lost in an Internet sale,” Dempsey further explained to the newspaper. “Anything that involves and emotional purchase needs to be live and onsite.” Property sales bring something new to Dempsey’s office each day. “We can have the entire week scheduled and a phone call can rearrange the best laid plans,” he said. “We never have a complete grasp of where, what or when we will be doing [something] from day to day.”

RUNNER UP: BEST MORTGAGE LENDERS

When it comes to banking, size matters. Bigger doesn’t always mean better. After all, Rome is considered to be a “small town,” and that’s something we all take pride in. At Greater Community Bank they get it… and that’s why they focus on our local community right here in Northwest Georgia. Serving Rome for over two decades, they’ve learned a thing or two about thriving in a small town. They’re a community bank, which means their dedicated staff consists of your friends and neighbors that know this town, too. They wait at the same traffic lights we all do, our children attend the same schools, and they shake the same hands as the rest of us on Sunday mornings. They have an extraordinary dedication to our community. Maybe that’s why it’s part of their name. We’re not sure if there’s another bank in town where you can expect the same person that’s answered for the last 22 years to still pick up the phone when you call it today. That’s right. They still answer the phone when it rings (though, they do confess it sometimes rings a few times before they can get to it). Whether the phone rings 20 or 200 times a day, however, being able to provide personal service to everyone that calls in is still important to them. While they admit they may not always be able to provide the scale of products you might find at a larger bank, they are confident their service far outweighs (and more than makes up for it). “If you speak to anyone on the Board of Directors, you will quickly find that they continue to believe in the values the bank was founded on,” says David Lance, President & CEO. “We prioritize the customer and their needs, hold a real passion for service, continuously recognize employees as our greatest resources, and last but certainly not least, we take an active role to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve.” Part of providing superior service, while also simplifying the lives of their customers, is understanding that not everyone operates on “banker’s hours”. They recognize that it’s not always convenient to visit their branch and that the number of hoops a customer must jump through matters. They’ve recently rolled out a product which allows customers to quickly fill out a mortgage application online at any time, guaranteeing a same-day response. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

Untitled-4 1

8/1/2018 12:16:13 PM

“Our financial performance is not quite where we aspire for it to be, but it’s still pretty darn good. We have consistently been rated a 5-Star Bank and have a lot to be proud of,” says Lance. “We are humbled to be recognized as the best bank in Rome! That’s a great testament to our staff”.

There’s a special feeling when a person can roll down the road in a shiny, clean car. Everyone loves that feeling, but not too many people want or have the time to put in the constant elbow grease to do it. There’s no worry about any of that with Goo Goo Express Wash close by to take care of all of the work. It’s even part of the company’s display on its website – “Relax in your car – we do the work for you!” Taking pride in a clean car has been around since automobiles first started puttering down the road. For Brian Dulaney, it’s also a family tradition. Dulaney, the owner and president of Goo Goo Express Wash at 1040 N. Broad St., is the third generation of his family to run a car wash. His grandfather Roger Beck began his career in the business in the 1945 in Anniston, Ala., opening a car wash. His father, James Dulaney, operated the Magic Touch car wash in Rome. “It’s been a good business for us,” he said. The name “Goo Goo” comes from Dulaney’s grandfather, who purchased a carwash called the Goo Goo carwash in Columbus, Ga., in 1972. The carwash had been built on the same property where the Goo-Goo Restaurant had been located some years before before it burned down. Goo Goo has been an industry leader in developing the concept of express wash. In this day and time where life demands quality, speed, economy and service, it is a must. The Goo Goo concept has evolved to serve a market between full service and self service. The company has multiple locations in six states, with opportunities for more growth. The car washes are outfitted in a red and yellow design, with extra lighting, tidy facilities, and neat landscaping. The employees maintain a clean-cut appearance, wearing white shirts and red bow ties. The car wash is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. “Our motto is ‘We love a clean car,’” Dulaney said. “We have a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee. If there is something that you don’t like, we will make it right.” Goo Goo customer Ashley from Rome reviewed the business on Yelp recently. “I had over a million bugs on my windshield and HAD to get something done about it,” she said. “Unfortunately rain adding to the mix put a nice, glossy smear on my windshield and I could barely see to drive. I purchased the total wash package, which entails inside / outside ($25). Not only [was] the staff courteous and friendly, they pulled my car up under the covering so I would get drenched from the monsoon of rain. Definitely will return!”

We are Rome.

At Brinson Askew Berry, we are proud to serve Rome and North Georgia with more than 40 years of expert counsel and leadership. It doesn’t take a big accident to bring a person’s mobility to a screeching halt. Sometimes it might be what seems like an innocent fall at home or a simple hit on the sports field that can cause big problems. But with the help from the skilled staff at Advance Rehabilitation, many of those who suffer injury find their way back to living life to the fullest. The staff specializes in physical therapy, sports medicine, industrial rehabilitation and athletic training. Highly-trained professionals serve as a bridge between injury and recovery to help patients get back to pre-injury status as quickly as possible. “When we get to be involved in the healing process and see our patients getting back to their lives, there is no greater reward,” said regional director Meleia Koshute. “We want to see our patients get back to playing their favorite sport, getting to hold their grandbabies as well as getting back to their jobs so they can provide for their families. What a blessing and privilege it is to get to be part of that in some way.” Romans have noticed the staff’s consistent record of care and success and have named them the top choice for physical therapy in the community. Advance Rehab therapist Cory Tucker took home top honors for physical therapist in Rome. “I realize that it’s more a testament to who I work with and not me,” Tucker said about his recognition. “I always look it as a team award.” Tucker has been a therapist for about eight and a half years. A lot of therapists come to their profession because of inspiration they felt while in rehab for a personal injury. This, however, was not Tucker’s story. He was inspired to work in physical therapy after watching athletes in college going through injuries that could have ended their athletic participation. Therapists would work with the athletes, giving them hope and teaching them to work toward recovery. Seeing that metamorphosis is Tucker’s favorite part of his job – watching people walk in for the first time feeling down and physically and ending their journey walking out the door for the final time with a smile on their faces and their bodies mended. Advance Rehabilitation first opened its doors in 1996 in Cedartown, with an office in Rome opening not long thereafter. They now have locations all over Georgia, as well as in Florida and Alabama.

“We make an intentional habit of reviewing and reminding ourselves that the patient is the most important part of our job,” Koshute said. “We believe that having empathy and really seeing and attempting to connect with each patient each visit is how the patient will feel comfortable enough to ask questions and seek understanding of how to best comply with their program. This leads to optimal outcomes for them.” A patient named Brenda sought Advance Rehabilitation’s help after back pain hindered her ability to tackle even basic skills such as walking and sitting. She finished with her own optimal outcome. “Through the efforts of these therapists I am back to normal life with no pain … mowing, weeding, etc.,” she noted in her testimonial on the company’s website. “I cannot say thank you enough. …”

Stone’s Throw Away from Rejuvenated Skin Dixie Stone is turning back time for the faces of Northwest Georgia and beyond. A master cosmetologist of more than 30 years, Stone is a skin care specialist at Harbin Clinic Dermatology Rome where she immerses herself in the evolving world of skincare, helping people throughout the Southeast put their healthiest face forward. “Everything I do is about enhancing the health of my patients’ skin, because healthy skin is beautiful skin,” says Stone. “I love helping others feel more confident.” Damage from years of exposure doesn’t stand a chance against Stone’s expert care. Using laser technology, Stone removes bothersome spots such as benign pigmented lesions or benign vascular lesions. The procedures are virtually painless and patients can return to work the same day. She’s also adept at removing unwanted hair, helping people manage acne breakouts, rosacea, scarring, and more. “Lasers rejuvenate the skin by not just removing the problem area, but also by activating collagen and elastin production deep within,” says Stone. “The result is younger-looking, vibrant skin.” Growing up, Stone says she was a tomboy who spent the summers riding tractors and climbing trees on her family’s farm. But when the weather was cold, she would always stay indoors, giving her dolls makeovers. “I would get in trouble because I was always cutting my Barbies’ hair, or painting their nails with a toothpick,” she chuckles. “But as I got older, my family members came to me to cut their hair or do their makeup for events. It made me want to go into cosmetology.” Stone attributes her lively personality and her love for working with people to the great success she finds in her career. “I’m very high-energy, and a self-motivated people pleaser,” she says. “When I can help someone feel great about themselves, it inspires me. This is a very rewarding career.” Stone sees both men and women of all ages and anyone can book an appointment for a free consultation. Kristy Agan has been training people in fitness for more than 15 years, but her business – KA Athletics – has been open for only about nine months. That’s long enough for voters to decide that she is not only Rome’s best fitness trainer but also Rome’s best gym. Agan offers private and group training specializing in kettle bells, weightlifting, bodyweight training, mobility and strength and conditioning. She holds multiple certifications for fitness training, and she and her staff train individuals and groups. This is not her first go-around as best trainer – she won top honors in 2014, 2015 and 2016. “I worked out with Kristy for two years during college and am now back with her after moving back to Rome,” Sarah Morrison said. “She is the absolute best and has always been so encouraging. Regardless of whether you want to lose weight or simply live a healthier lifestyle, she is always helpful and sincerely cares for all of her clients! Highly recommend her!” She credits her success to an amazing group of clients. “I am truly humbled that KA Athletics was voted as the best gym in Rome, Georgia,” she said. “Again, this business only exists because of the amazing people who train with me each month. Our gym is truly a family.” Agan is aided in her business by her husband, Joe, who is certified in hard-style ketlle bells and progressive calisthenics as well as trainers Leigh Crews and Donna Martin. KA Athletics is located at 303 East Sixth Ave., across the driveway from the Rome News-Tribune offices. Though her own business is very young, Agan has quite a loyal following. She has earned five out of five possible stars on Google and has numerous glowing reviews to support that rating. “I started my fitness journey five years ago,” reviewer Kristy Hughes wrote. “I’ve been training with Kristy Agan for four and a half years. Her dedication to her craft and her clients is

amazing. She is always willing to help a client go farther and do more than the client knows is possible. I would recommend her services to anyone who asks. Whether in a group or private training sessions, a client’s current physical fitness and their goals are always taken into account when Kristy designs a workout.” On her company’s website, www.ka-athletics.com, Agan lets clients know that she accepts people where they are – and then she works to take them where they want to be. “Kristy is so much more than just a trainer!” Casey Ellis said. “She’s a motivator and encourager through every single workout. She pushes you to your limits because she has that much faith in you! Her goal is for every single client to reach their goal and she will strive through each workout to make sure that happens. She’s made me feel better about myself in three weeks than I have since I had a baby almost two years ago! If you’re looking for a lifestyle change and to become a healthier, better you, KA Athletics is where you should be!” “Thank you for voting me as the best personal trainer,” Agan said. “I could not be successful without the support of my amazing clients.”

BEST REAL ESTATE COMPANY HARDY REALTY 1609 MARTHA BERRY BLVD. ROME, GA 30165 706-291-4321 WWW.HARDYREALTY.COM SALESDESK@HARDYREALTY.COM

Founded in 1925, Hardy Realty is the oldest and largest locally-owned real estate firm in northwest Georgia, providing best-in-class service in residential and commercial real estate. Hardy is also the leading property management company in the area, responsible for handling more than 1,500 rental properties. The main phone number for Hardy Realty is 706-291-4321. The company has been around so long that one time, people simply had to dial 4321 to reach Hardy’s switchboard. The company, with its motto, “A Tradition of Trust Since 1925” began with Rome resident Wilson Moore Hardy, who was born in December 1881. He served as the president of Citizens Bank for a number of years before organizing the Hardy Trust Company in 1925. After World War II, the company was renamed Hardy Realty. Jimmy Byars leads the company as chief executive officer and broker, roles he has held for the past 25 years. “Members of the Hardy team understand the idea that influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first,” Byars said. “This mantra is something that spans all the way back to the company’s founding by Wilson Hardy in 1925. Hardy Realty is now the largest independently owned real estate firm in Northwest Georgia, carrying on Mr. Hardy’s legacy and the tradition of trust he established.” No other brokerage in the area offers greater local, national and international exposure for listings than Hardy. In addition to the main office on Martha Berry Blvd., they have satellite offices on Broad Street at the Forrest Building in the heart of Rome’s thriving downtown and on Main Street in downtown Cedartown. Hardy also has a thriving presence on the Internet with its comprehensive company website and a strong social media presence. Through various affiliations, Hardy Realty’s properties receive exposure to potential buyers on hundreds of different real estate websites. While the company’s reach is far and wide across the Internet, its employees don’t forget their local roots. Hardy set the initial example by being heavily involved in the Rome community, even leading the Rome Chamber of Commerce. Byars served as chairman of the board at the Chamber in 2015, and he encourages his employees to stay involved locally as well.

Since Hardy has always been a locally owned and operated business, the company has long recognized the importance of being deeply involved in the community, Byars said. In addition to multiple partnerships with other local businesses, Hardy also supports many of the not-for-profits and charities in the region through advertising buys, monetary contributions and volunteer service. With that kind of commitment to its city and county and to focusing on providing the highest level of service possible to its clients, it would not be surprising if Hardy Realty and Development Company was around for another 100 years or more.

Sometimes just looking good makes a person feel good. Dogs seem to be exactly the same as people are in that respect, and Judy Shumate Minshew has made that commitment to help canines look their best her life’s work. “[I] have always had a love for all animals,” Minshew said. “So I just turned my love into a business and I can’t imagine doing any other job.” Minshew and her daughter, Abral Wilson, own Dippity Do-Da Dogs at 608 West 12th Street. Minshew’s husband, Michael, also helps care for the dogs there. The business opened in 1989. It has been at its present location for the past nine years and was previously located on North Fifth Avenue. They estimate they groom between 50 to 70 dogs a day and offer all different types of styles, hair colors and cuts as well as grooming with hand scissors, brush-outs and deshedding. In addition to grooming, Dippity Do-Da Dogs also provides boarding and daycare services for dog owners. “We are known for our big day care with pools,” Minshew said. “We have a little dog area and big dog play area with pools and lots of toys.” She said it is exciting to see all of the dogs that come in for doggy daycare. “They just run in the door and go straight to the back to the daycare,” Minshew said. “They know the way. You don’t even have to lead them. They just love it.” Dippity Do-Da Dogs’ daycare has naptime for older dogs and a separate play area for dogs that are not fixed or that don’t get along with other dogs. Animals are rotated into this area throughout the day. In the front of the building, the business has a store for the human parents to enjoy. For their animals they can choose from a variety of toys, clothes, collars, leashes, harnessesm shampoos, conditioners and deodorizers. For themselves they can find an assortment of football and baseball jerseys. Dippity Do-Da Dogs is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are closed Wednesdays and Sundays for grooming. They offer boarding services every day of the year, with holidays, spring and summer being the peak times for boarding. With close to 30 years in operation, Dippity Do-Da Dogs has developed quite a loyal following. Customer Lisa Thacker praised the staff on the business’ Facebook page for her pet’s care. “Judy, Michael, and the entire staff go over and beyond for these animals,” Thacker said. “I am very particular about … where I keep my babies, and I know I could look the world over and not find a better

Pets are family, and when a furry four-legged family member requires medical care, Romans often seek the assistance of Dr. Dan Pate and his staff at West Rome Animal Clinic. The clinic is a small animal hospital practicing medical, surgical and dental care for highly-valued patients while offering excellent client service said practice manager Beth Russell. There are three other veterinarians on staff besides Pate – Susan Fitzpatrick, Amber Coffman and Martin Goldberg. “Their mission is to treat all pets with kindness, dignity and respect while providing high-quality excellent care to achieve the goal of providing more good years together for their clients and their cherished pets,” she said. “Dr. Pate and his entire staff truly have a love for our family members with four legs,” said Chamaine Ray in a review for Google.” It is obvious as soon as you walk in the door. [It is] the only place I take my babies. The clinic has been serving the greater Rome area for more than 60 years. Pate, the current owner, received his doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Georgia in 1989. He purchased West Rome Animal Clinic in 1990. Russell said that Pate aimed to make West Rome Animal Clinic an accredited hospital with the American Animal Hospital Association. He met this goal in 1992 and it has been maintained ever since. The AAHA was established in 1933 by leaders in the veterinary profession to develop standards for high quality veterinary care. “To become accredited, a companion animal hospitals undergo regular comprehensive evaluations by AAHA veterinary experts who evaluate the practice on approximately 900 standards of veterinary care. …” the AAHA website notes. “The American Animal Hospital Association is the only organization to accredit companion veterinary hospitals. Our accredited hospitals hold themselves to a higher standard. Pets are their passion, and keeping them healthy is their number one priority. They strive to deliver excellent care for pets. Why? Because pets deserve nothing less.” In 2014, Pate opened his new 5,000-square foot state of the art facility on the same property as his original clinic. That same year, Pate because a member of the American Board of Feline Practitioners and West Rome Animal Clinic became a Certified Feline Friendly Hospital. Google reviewer Patricia S. had never been to the clinic until about six months ago, but she was impressed enough to say that she would be coming back again.

8/1/2018 12:16:13 PM

“I have only been there once, but I really appreciated how they treated my kitten,” she said.” Dr. Pate seemed truly interested in the health and well being of my little cat. I will definitely go back with my other cats.” In its new facility, the clinic offers a separate area for hospitalized patients as well as a safe, secure and spacious boarding facility that includes specialty suites and cat condos. Each guest is fed a premium pet food and boarded dogs are walked three to four times daily. West Rome Animal Clinic is open every day except Sunday. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, clinic hours are from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Hours on Thursday and Saturday are from 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Looking back, it seems unbelievable that Heritage Nissan used to be able to fit its dealership and service department at the corner of Martha Berry Boulevard and John Davenport. As a testament to the dealership’s success, their home on Veterans Memorial Highway for the last nine years stays busy with customers and a constant arrival of new vehicles to replace those that have been sold. Rome’s Barron family, which has a long history of selling cars, owns and oversees Heritage Auto Group. Owners include Mike Barron Sr., Mike Barron Jr. and George Barron. The dealership has a complete service department, as well as a large selection of pre-owned cars, trucks and SUVs. “Our customers are our priority at Heritage Nissan,” management notes on the dealership’s website www. romenissan.com. “We know that without you we wouldn’t be able to provide the Rome, GA area with all our fabulous products. Without our customers we would wither away into nothingness. We do not want to do that. We want to be the best car dealership that you know of, and we want to be a permanent part of your automotive experience. We are a humble family owned business, which means that we will always provide you with a friendly and safe environment for you and all your automotive needs.” And there is no shortage of testimonials for the superior level of service provided to customers. “This is my second purchase at Heritage,” said Nicole Smith in her online review of the dealership on Google. “The staff here [is] so friendly. I felt no pressure about buying something I didn’t need. I have to travel with my job so I am in my vehicle a lot. The salesman listened to my needs and put me in the perfect vehicle. I feel the process was really straight forward and financing was a breeze. I’ll be back when I’m ready to trade again.” “Heritage Nissan Rome is the best,” said reviewer Mevelyn Abbot.” I take my Altima for service they got me right in. They are so friendly there they make you feel right at home. Keep doing a great job guys!” Nissan is a brand that has gained a lot of popularity and praise over the last few decades. It initially marketed its vehicles in 1934 under the Datsun name. In 1981, Nissan dropped “Datsun” and began selling its vehicles strictly under the name Nissan.

Nissan’s lineup includes several different cars and SUVs, including the Altima, Sentra, Maxima, Versa, Murano, Rogue, Armada and Pathfinder. The automaker manufactures two makes of truck, the Nissan Frontier and the larger Nissan Titan. “At Heritage Nissan, we believe in providing you with the most amazing selection of Nissans possible,” the Heritage website says. “We do not just want you to be aware of your options, we want you to be able to see them, touch them, and even drive them. … We believe that Nissan makes a car for everybody, and when you stop by and see us, we will to prove that to you.”

BEST REAL ESTATE AGENT Runner-Up

AMBER TAYLOR 200 E. SECOND AVE. ROME, GA 30161 706-266-1013 WWW.TAYLORANDCOREALTYGROUP.COM AMBER@TAYLORANDCOREALTYGROUP.COM

Sometimes there’s just no place like home, and Amber Taylor’s intimate knowledge of her hometown of Rome certainly acts as one of her biggest assets as a real estate agent. But the woman who leads Taylor & Co. with Keller Williams Northwest initially had no plans to stay in this moderately sized Northwest Georgia town. “I was born and raised in Rome and moved away for five years and came back in 2013,” Taylor said. “I grew up, like many teenagers, where I just knew I would escape this small town.” She left Georgia and lived overseas in Germany and then moved back to the United States to Kansas before returning to Rome. After she got back home, she started working in car sales before transitioning to real estate in 2015. “Having roots here definitely helps me network a little easier,” Taylor said. “And it also helps that I know the area in and out and can be a great resource to clients, especially those that I am helping relocate to Rome.” The goal of her business is to help clients have the best possible real estate experience, treating each transaction as one of the most important of a person’s life. Sometimes that means helping people sell their homes and say goodbye to years of special memories before embarking on a new journey. Other times, she is helping people find the home they want for making new memories. “Our team is focused on building lifelong relationships and memories – the sale is just the icing on the cake at the end,” Taylor said. “I feel like it is important to stress that I am in the business of helping people. Whether it is helping someone build their investment portfolio or helping my sweet first-time homebuyers make their dreams come true, we are here to help them reach their goals and help them celebrate at the finish line.” Her office, which is located at 200 E. Second Ave., is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Taylor may be reached by phone at 706-235-1515 (office) or 706-266-1351 (cell). She may also be reached by email at taylorandcorealtygroup@gmail.com .

The “small town” that Taylor was so anxious to leave behind as a teenager now is a place that she loves to show off to other people. “Now that I have moved back, I have fallen in love with my little big town,” she said. “Our town has grown and become such a beautifully diverse place to call home. I have clients who have moved from California, New Jersey, Florida and Maryland who have all just driven through this little town at some point on the way to their destination and absolutely fell in love. Hearing about Rome through their eyes warms my heart and makes me proud to call Rome home.”

If anyone ever was destined to be a leader as a real estate agent, Rome’s Elizabeth Powell would be that person. Elizabeth, and her husband, Colin, own Keller Williams Realty Northwest. “Growing up as a third generation realtor, I feel like I have sold real estate my entire life. …” Elizabeth said. “I come from a family full of Realtors, starting with my grandparents. Jim and Ivanette Free started Jason Free Realty here in Rome. They left the business to my uncle, Jason Free and my mother, Trine Davis, when they moved to Panama City Beach, Florida, and opened up a real estate company there.” The husband and wife duo heading Keller Williams Realty Northwest both grew up in Rome. Elizabeth earned her license as an agent in Georgia in 2013. After an honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps, Colin worked for several large corporations focusing on information technology before becoming a Realtor. Elizabeth’s legacy in real estate and Colin’s expertise in the use of technology have helped make the team among Rome’s favorite Realtors. “We help people buy, sell or invest in real estate,” Elizabeth said. “We help families find their dream home, sell their current home and build wealth investing in real estate.” Growing up in the business, Elizabeth has been familiar with the ins and outs of the real estate market for most of her life. She has a deep passion for helping people find their dream home. “I love this community and the people who live here,” she said. “I have a wealth of knowledge about the area and the local real estate market, a commitment to excellence and customer service, and dedication to helping you achieve your goals.” As the other half of the team, Colin stays on the cutting edge of technology and uses it to ensure clients receive the highest level of service and communication about their real estate situation. He specializes in marketing and selling fine homes in north Georgia and provides expert strategic advice to his clients. He has a heart for both country and community. The company’s philosophy is simple: clients come first. The duo believes that if a person is not left with an amazing experience, they haven’t done their job. “We don’t measure success through achievements or awards, but through the satisfaction of our clients,” the company motto states.

8/1/2018 12:16:13 PM

“I know that buying and selling a home is extremely stressful, and one of the most difficult processes you will face in your lifetime,” Elizabeth said. “My job is to educate you about the real estate market, help you figure out what you need and want in a home, establish a budget that you are comfortable with, and of course, find a home that feels like a home.” Both Elizabeth and Colin are excited to have been honored as top real estate agents by their hometown. “We are very grateful to receive this award – it is such an honor,” Elizabeth said. “We give all the credit to God and just feel so blessed to serve Rome. We love all of our fellow Romans.”

The Winslette Pharmacy has been a fixture in Rome for more than 20 years and is truly a family affair. Owner Keith Winslette opened the pharmacy in 1996. Son Brett Winslette, joined the family business in 2004 as a registered pharmacist. Daughter Brooke Winslette Salmon followed suit in 2007, also joining as a registered pharmacist. They have spent these years working hard to help Romans feel better and to build relationships with each person who comes to them for service. As a child, Brett spent a lot of time watching his dad’s career, and he saw how many people depended on his father and found inspiration in his work. “He worked for several different employers – chain and independent – throughout his career before opening his own pharmacy in 1996,” he said. “Even before opening his own pharmacy, my dad had a following of people who wanted him as their pharmacist because they trusted him with their health and appreciated the way he served their needs through the years. Owning our own pharmacy added another layer of interest and provided a work environment that I knew I would be one I would enjoy.” “We truly strive to know and serve our customers and patients on an individual basis,” Brett said. “This allows us to care for people in a way that the big box and chain pharmacies just can’t.” The company’s motto sums up the core philosophy of the family – “Where personal service is the most powerful medicine.” “Our purpose is to serve our community with the best pharmaceutical care and advice possible,” Brett said. “We do this with personal service and attention to patient-specific detail, care and compassion. We incorporate new technology and advanced health services into our old-fashioned patient care.” The pharmacy is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays. Winslette is one of the few area pharmacies that offer sterile and non-sterile compounding. According to the Professional Compounding Centers of America, compounding is the art and science of creating personalized medicine. It all starts with a problem such as a patient who can’t swallow pills, another with a gluten allergy, the strong need for a drug in short supply.

8/1/2018 12:16:13 PM

“For whatever reason, many people aren’t served by mass-produced medications,” the PCCA notes. “That’s where compounding comes in. Special flavorings, unique dosage forms, innovative delivery methods – using these tools and more, compounding pharmacists work with prescribers to fill a gap in health care through customized solutions for specific patient needs.” By having certified pharmacists performing this service, Winslette Pharmacy is able to fill a gap in pharmaceutical care that affects many patients. In addition, Winslette Pharmacy offers immunizations for the flu, shingles and pneumonia. Other ways in which Winslette strives to provide exceptional care to their patients and customers is with a double drive-thru window, free delivery to Rome and much of Floyd County and online refills through their website (www.winslettepharmacy.com) or mobile app. “We work hard to serve our patients to the best of our ability,” Brett said. “This is the seventh year in a row we have been honored with the Best of Rome award and we are very thankful and humbled by the support.”

When owner Angela Winslette opened Winslette Pharmacy Gifts in 2008, she wanted to bring the same level of exceptional service known on the pharmacy side to her gift side. “The service we are known for bleeds over into our gift department,” she said. “It is not unusual for our staff to help pick out a gift, wrap it and deliver it without the customer ever having to come into the store. We are willing to do whatever it takes to make our customers’ lives easy and convenient.” Usually a pharmacy is not the first place that comes to mind when people need to find a gift, but Winslette Pharmacy Gifts is definitely an exception. The gift shop was opened when Winslette and her husband, Keith, moved to a new building and their present location in 2008. “One thing that makes our business unique is that many of our customers are coming to a professional pharmacy for health care needs but can also experience a soothing and relaxing time looking through our gift department while they are there,” Winslette said. “This can be therapeutic and/or convenient if they can get a needed gift for someone in the same trip.” “Our purpose is to provide an environment where our customers love to come and find gifts of all varieties for family, friends or themselves,” she said. “We have food items that make great gifts as well as gifts for home, wedding and baby. Our staff will provide as much help with picking a gift as each individual customer desires and then wrap it for free.” For example, brides-to-be have the option of registering at Winslette. When they register, they receive a special gift. Parents-to-be can also register for baby items through Winslette Pharmacy Gifts. There is a wide assortment of items for little ones including apparel, nursery décor, toys, hospital door hangers and specialty gifts. Customers can also follow the store on Facebook and Instragram for frequent postings of new items, sales and promotions. Winslette and her daughter-in-law, Janessa, are in charge of maintaining the gift shop. “Our gift staff can offer help and suggestions to you in picking the perfect gift,” notes the website. “One way to set your gift apart is through customization. We offer monogramming and other customization through vinyl artwork and embroidery. We offer this

service in-house for quick turn-around times. We offer a variety of fonts, colors, and designs to make your gift extra special. Want a truly custom design? Our customization staff will work with you to create a unique design that meets your needs.” Winslette credits the success of the gift shop to the many people who come there to find that special something to share with someone. “We are very thankful for our loyal customers and community,” she said. “We would not be a success without you and we are humbled to be awarded Rome’s Best Gift Shop for the third time. I am also very thankful for our business and the success He has allowed.”

The Irish countryside sparkles in various shades of green. Terry Clift said Ireland had less of the mountainous vistas he enjoyed in Scotland, but more than made up for it with its bright green landscape. He was especially enjoyed the town of Killarny, with its charming restaurants and shops.

Scotland and the Emerald Isle A group of Rome residents traveled to Scotland and Ireland recently, and were amazed by what they experienced. James and Sheila Boutselis, Charlotte Saxon, Nancy Smith, Ronnie and Sally Farmer, Terry and Nancy Clift and Dottie and Phil Taylor spent 15 days exploring the two countries and found unparalleled beauty, history, culture and charm. Terry is happy to share these stunning images of the trip with Rome Life readers...

ROME 122 - 127 - Travel Section 122

10/18/2018 10:05:20 PM

This picturesque photo was taken outside the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum honoring the memory and the works of the famous Scottish poet. The group didn’t go inside the musuem but they toured the grounds and the church. That particular afternoon was sunny and this photo was taken from a bridge above the river next to the museum.

A bagpiper at Stirling Castle. After speaking to the group, he piped the tour down the street to a local pub where they had dinner and Haggis, a traditional Scottish meal made with a sheep’s liver, heart and lungs and boiled in a bag (usually the animal’s stomach). Terry tried it and said it tasted like a rotten meatloaf. But the presentation was interesting. Everyone toasts the haggis with whiskey.

Mountains and valleys on the Isle of Skye. The group had visited a castle on Skye but upon reaching it, the wind was blowing so fiercely that their tour guide quickly hustled them back onto the bus because officials were about to close the bridge they needed to cross to leave Skye. Terry said the weather was mostly good throughout the trip. There was some rain but not enough to delay and of their plans. And certainly not enough to stop them from seeing beautiful views like this one.

Rome residents James and Sheila Boutselis, Charlotte Saxon, Nancy Smith, Ronnie and Sally Farmer, Nancy Clift, Dottie and Phil Taylor. This photo was taken by Terry Clift at Nancy Hand’s Pub in Dublin. It was the group’s first day there. The tour organizer was toasting and welcoming them to their 15-day tour of Ireland and Scotland.

The countryside going into the Scottish capital of Edinburgh. The group was returning from St. Andrews, Scotland. Terry remembers everything beeing so green and all the pastures separated by hedgerows. The Rome group traveled on a large tour bus with about 48 people from around the world. The Scottish coast on the way to Glengoyne Distillery. The distillery has been continuously in operation since its founding in 1833 at Dumgoyne, north of Glasgow. The group was treated to a tasting of a 12-year-old single malt scotch.

Blair Castle stands on its grounds near the village of Blair Atholl in Perthshire, Scotland. It is the ancestral home of Clan Murray and was historically the seat of their chief, the Duke of Atholl. The castle is sometimes used by Queen Elizabeth II, who stays there about a week each year. The Rome group toured the castle. Terry said it’s filled with hundreds of decorative antlers, guns and swords mounted on every wall.

Blarney Castle is a medieval stronghold in Blarney, near Cork, Ireland. Though the castle is now a partial ruin with some accessible rooms and battlements, visitors still flock here to see and kiss the Stone of Eloquence (better known as the Blarney Stone) at the top of the castle. Tourists visiting Blarney Castle may hang upside-down over a sheer drop to kiss the stone, which is said to give the gift of eloquence. There are many versions of the origin of the stone, including a claim that it was the Lia Fáil — a stone upon which Irish kings were crowned. A few members of the Rome group climed 123 steps to the castle’s battlements to kiss the stone.

Eilean Donan is a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet - Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh, in the western Highlands of Scotland. The island is dominated by a picturesque castle that frequently appears in photographs and films. Since the castle’s restoration in the early 20th century, a footbridge has connected the island to the mainland.

The Giant’s Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns which are the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It’s located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although there are also some with four, five, seven or eight sides. Terry said the day he took this photo it was cold and rainy but the group didn’t let that stop them from walking across this unique natural structure.

Terry calls this photo “The Pot of Gold.” It was taken in the Scottish countryside.

Edinburgh Castle strikes an imposing figure and was one of the stops on the group’s tour of Scotland. Terry said they walked the grounds but didn’t go inside the castle which is still used for military purposes today as well as housing a WWII memorial. It’s also the home of the Scottish crown jewels.

GIVING SHELTER TO THOSE IN NEED

DEVON GODDARD SMYTH EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, THE SHELTER

The William S. Davies Homeless Shelters, Inc. (The Shelter) has been serving those who are without shelter in the Rome community since 2003. In 2003, Susan Seagraves, the founder of The Shelter, spoke with the businesses on Broad Street and others in the community about the needs of the homeless in Rome to gauge interest and support. She was able to garner support and collect donations from the community and he helter officially opened its doors in October 2003. It was named in honor of her dear friend and mentor, William S. Davies. Since then, The Shelter has positively impacted the lives of the guests, helping them become self sufficient citizens. We are a faith based ministry, which is supported by friends of The Shelter and generous givers within the community. None of the services of the program are tied to religious practice. Instead, we believe that the work done at he helter is e pressly a reflection of od’s grace in the world. The Shelter has intentionally not taken government monies for the program in order to avoid the limitations and controls tied to that money and to best serve the needs of the guests. Our program meets the vital need in our community for a transitional shelter: a program focused on getting people into a safe environment for a longer period of time, where they are able to work towards stability. The Shelter allows appropriate space and privacy for longer stays, alleviating stress and ensuring dignity. It includes meeting and work spaces for a more intensive, holistic approach that recognizes guests as uni ue individuals. Over the last fifteen years, he helter has provided a place to stay for hundreds of men. The program has grown and changed with the needs of the guests over time. A newly built facility was opened in January of 2017 on East 18th Street and currently serves 16 guests. Each guest who arrives at The Shelter works with our case managers to develop a personalized case plan that maps out the e pectations for their stay. In all cases, guests are re uired to receive a mental health and substance abuse assessment at Highland Rivers and then follow treatment recommendations. This process allows The Shelter to provide a stable and substance-free setting for housing. Each guest has a chore, abides by a house contract and maintains sobriety while living at The Shelter.

fter he helter opened its’ doors on ast th treet, it was keenly apparent that women in the community needed an e ually safe place to live. hile the number of women who are homeless is harder to gauge, looking to the statistics for homeless women that Rome City Schools (390 women) and Floyd County Schools (360 women) have gathered, it was obvious that women are homeless in our community. There are shelters for women who are in domestic violence situations and substance abuse recovery, however, in Rome, there are no shelters for women who strictly identify as homeless. In addition, there is nowhere a homeless woman with children is able to go for shelter in Floyd County. The Shelter has received over 150 calls from women seeking shelter over the last 18 months. In May of 2018, a property was closed on in North Rome to serve homeless women and their children. Currently under renovation, The Ruth and Naomi Project will house 8 single women and 4 women with children. The house has ade uate space to provide an opportunity for single women and mothers to live comfortably while they are working toward self sufficiency. ooperating with the Family Resource enter, the mother’s will receive case management and support. The Ruth and Naomi Project intends to open by early 2019. Renovations have been vigorously accomplished with the help of hundreds of Romans; including (but certainly not limited to) the Boy Scouts, Bible Study groups, PEO, local church youth and adult groups, Berry College and Shorter University students, Carpenters for Christ, the Ball Corporation, and many other individuals who have come out to invest in the work. here is still an opportunity to financially partner with us. As a registered 501c3, The William S. Davies Homeless Shelters, Inc. provides donors with a tax receipt and promises to be faithful stewards of all contributions. Mail is accepted at M , entral laza, Rome, . In fact, if we could receive a donation of just $10 per month from 5,000 people in our community for one year, it would keep The Shelters operating and programs budget funded for two full years. Volunteers are the strength of the program; providing dinner meals, maintaining gardens, donating toiletries and other household supplies, writing thank you notes, and countless other tasks to help with the day to day work of The Shelter. We are grateful for a city that believes that all people should live with dignity and that helps us accomplish this important task. Find out more about us online at www.daviesshelter.com and follow us on Facebook as The Shelter and The Ruth and Naomi Project. Contact us a 706-512-1152 or 706-802-6300.
