elcome to Rome Life Magazine’s annual high school football preview. As I sit here and write this column I wonder, like many of you, where time has gone. I feel like I have to ask how did we get here so fast. To be sure there are lots of excited coaches, players, band members, cheerleaders, team managers, hot dog stand volunteers, parents and fans ready for Friday nights. Actually the season began on Thursday evening, August 16 with the Corky Kell Classic double header at Rome’s Barron Stadium. The first game was scheduled at 5:30 p.m. with class AAAA Ridgeland facing class AAA Calhoun and brought lots of neighboring Calhoun and Ridgeland High School fans, thus filling downtown Rome’s Broad Street. The second game at 8:45 p.m. pitted 2017 AAAAA State Champions Rome High School Wolves against AAAAAAA Marietta High School. Dave Hunter, the executive director of the classic said “ The city of Rome and Floyd County we very determined to bring the Cory Kell to their backyard and we are thrilled for this opportunity.” So were we. We could think of no better community to kick off high school football than Rome, Georgia. Rome and Floyd have much to offer and lots to see. While this issue of Rome Life is focused on all things high school football be sure to read the entire magazine or you’ll miss some other great features. Inside you’ll find football coverage for all local high schools. Included are player spotlights, rosters, season previews, cheerleader and band features and other information to get you prepped for the first game and the season. We got good reviews on last year’s pullout calendars/schedules including high school, Berry and Shorter, Georgia and Georgia Tech and other ACC and SEC teams. We’ve included that again for your convenience. Be sure to thank the local businesses that make these pages possible.

We have a travel feature in which a local family, the Wattersons, explore Northeast Georgia. Hot air balloon festivals are colorful and exciting and we have lots of information on one coming in September. While football controls most conversations this time of year we think you’ll also be interested in our interview with Atlanta Braves star and hometown hero, Charlie Culberson. There is more inside from social scene photos, Georgia Mountain Music club photo feature and of course Rome Life editor, Severo Avila’s column. Hot summer days giving way to cooler fall evenings mean it’s time for high school football. We hope Rome Life magazine helps you prepare for a fun-filled fall.

BY DOUG WALKER

7/29/2018 8:06:47 AM

By mid-September, most Rome and Northwest Georgia residents will have had their fill of hot air, but that won’t be the case for John Cavin and Jeremy Kwaterski. They’re bringing the Rome Hot Air Ball0on Festival to Richard B. Russell Regional Airport Sept. 14 and 15. The business buddies started a festival in Menlo from 2008. Cavin is the owner of Cartoon Hot Air Balloons, a company that specializes in character shaped balloons. “He put a balloon up to just shake the dust out of it and it drew some press, somebody sent some pictures and we started chatting, then decided to put on a festival here,” Kwaterski said. That lasted until 2012 when it was

they decided to shut it down the event for a while. Meanwhile, Cavin was bitten by the balloon bug — big time — and was participating in festivals all over the world. So it was only a matter of time before they ultimately decided to revive the local festival and bring it to Rome. Oddly enough, Cavin got into ballooning, not the fastest form of transportation, after driving race cars for over a decade. His crew chief moved to Florida and about six

months later called Cavin to suggest that he come to Florida and see what his new hobby had become. “It turned out to be hot-air ballooning. That was about 38-39 years ago.” Cavin said. Cavin was hooked almost immediately and now has eight balloons that he takes to events all over the world. “There are no two flights alike so you never get bored with it,” Cavin said. “You can take off from the same place five days in a row and the flights will all be different. It’s an adventure every flight.” His first character was the Flying Purple People Eater, made originally by a friend in Brazil. After purchasing it, he bought Yellow Bird and Puddy Cat from another friend.

based out of the athletic complex at Chattooga High School in Summerville after outgrowing tiny Menlo’s capacity to cope with the crowds. Kwaterski, who brings the business background to the partnership, was involved in the franchising of CPR Cell Phone Repair with over 500 locations worldwide. He said the balloon crowds grew huge, with upwards of 15,000 during the last couple of years. Some people started to complain that there weren’t any places to stay and nothing else to do so

ROME_11 12 13 Balloon Feature 11

7/29/2018 8:09:24 AM

“The next thing you know, I’m in the business,” Cavin said. The inventory of character balloons has grown to include a second Yellow Bird, Pepe LePew, Terry the Mouse and Tomcat as well as Rocket the Flying Squirrel. Cavin is having a special pirate-shaped balloon being made in Brazil at the moment, and expects it to be ready for a festival in Reno this year, but not in time for the Rome event. Piloting the special shaped balloons is a little more challenging that the traditional round shaped balloons. “Flying a regular balloon may be like driving a car but these sometimes can be like driving a tractor trailer,” Cavin said. He said there’s a lot of science, particularly meteorology, involved in flying balloons. At the last festival in Summerville, Cavin explained it simply as ninth grade science. Hot air creates lift for the balloon to fly, the air inside the balloon has to be close to 100 degrees hotter than the air outside the balloon. Typically, the best time for ballooning is just after sunrise and just before sunset. It’s easier to get the temperature inside the balloon just right and more often than not winds are most favorable at those times of the day. He’s had two balloons in Taiwan this summer, is going to Canada for a couple of festivals and has already been to California and Oregon. Cavin said that Kwaterski called him several months ago indicating that people had been expressing an interest in reviving their festival on the mountain and he suggested the Rome Airport. Negotiations with the Airport Commission took a while and the deal was sealed this spring. Kwaterski said the cartoon-shaped balloons really help make the event a family-friendly festival. Cavin expects balloonist friend from all around the country to be bring their craft to Rome for the event, anticipating 15-18 different balloonists for the inaugural event.

ROME_11 12 13 Balloon Feature 11

“We’ve got a bunch coming from Alabama, some from Georgia, one from Ohio, one from Louisville, Kentucky, one from Nashville, a couple from Louisiana,” Cavin said. Kwaterski said the much larger venue at Russell Airport will also permit other activities including a car show and a fly-in. “I’m really excited about that,” he said. “It’s going to be very cool.” The Rome Balloon Festival will feature tethered balloon rides of upwards 50-75 feet into the air on both days of the event. “You’ll be tethered so you won’t go anywhere,” Kwaterski said. Up to eight people will be able to go up in a basket at the same time. Rides will cost $20 each. Testament to the idea that the event is expected to be a real crowd pleaser is the fact that tickets for full, untethered balloon rides were pretty much sold out by this magazine’s deadline. The car show will focus on British models, MGs, Mini-Coopers and the like. Tiger Flight Foundation will be doing some formation flights during the event. “It’s going to be action-packed,” Kwaterski said. The gates will open at 3 p.m. each day and will continue well past sunset. Admission to the event is $10 each, with children two and under entering free. There is a $10 parking fee and all the parking will be available on the airport grounds.

Armuchee High SPOTLIGHT ON:

ADAM HART Position: Running Back/Defensive Back Class: Senior The Armuchee Indians have a new coach and a new mindset according to Hart, who will be counted on to provide leadership on both sides of the ball this season. Head coach Jeremy Green returns to his alma mater to help bring a fresh start to his former team. “I think this team is going to bring some more excitement to the field this year,” Hart said. What’s it been like to be on this team the last three years? I think we’ve come a long way. Everyone’s mindset, especially, has changed this year. Everyone is working hard and we expect to win. I think we have leaders and we have some young guys who can step up. What kind of effect has coach Green had on the team since he came here? He’s very intense and brings a good mindset to the team. I think it’s good for guys to have him as a role model for our team. He’s a good leader and he does everything he can to put us where we need to be. What kind of goals do you and the team have for this season? I think our main goal is to win a lot of games to prove people wrong. But as far as myself, I’m going to play a lot of positions this year so I want to stack up as many total yards and touchdowns for our team as I can. But the overall goal is to go out and win. What do you feel has been the team’s biggest improvement from last season? I think the biggest improvement is just our attitude. Everyone has a tougher mindset and our mentality is to go out and win. We’re not going to take anything from anybody, and we’re going to give it to them. What’s your favorite part about playing on a Friday night? The lights, the fans, the atmosphere it brings, it’s like nothing else. Just being on the field and playing the game you love.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

CAROLINE RAY SENIOR

CHEERING THEM ON!

It didn’t take long for Caroline Ray to begin her cheerleading journey. Influenced by her cousin growing up, the Armuchee senior began cheerleading when she was 3-years-old. Now she’s a football and competition cheerleader and in her fourth year of doing both. “It’s so much fun,” she said of balancing the two activities. What do you enjoy most about being a cheerleader? I enjoy seeing all of the people get excited on Friday nights when we come out and cheer. And that we encourage the football players and get the fans pumped up about the game. What made you want to be a cheerleader? I’ve always wanted to be a cheerleader because my cousin was a cheerleader and I’ve always looked up to her. And I always looked up to the cheerleaders in high school and thought that’s what I wanted to be one day. What stood out about it that captured your interest? Cheerleaders always look so happy. They always have such energy coming out. And when you’re little, looking up, you just see those people as happy people and always having fun. What kind of impact has being a cheerleader had on your life? I feel like it’s made me more of a leader, because through cheerleading I’ve had to lead the team. And especially this year, being a senior, I’ve had to step in and take on that leadership role, and it’s taught me how to lead people in a positive way. What’s your favorite part about Friday nights? My favorite part about Friday nights? I don’t know. It’s all just really fun. I like cheering in front of the student section and getting to see the school just excited about the boys playing. It’s exciting to see them react to the game.

The Armuchee High School marching band is bringing some frights to Friday nights this football season, and they have an experienced presence to lead them onto the field in Kayla Hutcherson. A former assistant drum major, the senior is in her second season as head drum major and ready to help bring something different to halftime with a program based on Halloween. What do you enjoy the most about being in band? Since I’m the drum major, I really enjoy conducting and just being able to be in front of the band to help them become better musicians and marchers. I just like to help bring the show together so we have a great performance. What are you looking forward to this year? The theme for our show this year is a Halloween theme, so I’m really excited to see how that plays out and how we’re going to integrate all of the little scary and spooky aspects of the show. What is your favorite part about Friday nights? My favorite part about Friday nights is when the band marches onto the field and I get to the podium. The announcer says, ‘Drum major Kayla Hutcherson, is your band ready?” And then I get to salute. That’s my favorite part of any performance. What is your goal for this season? My goal is for our show to come together earlier than it has in the past, for us to be able to play through all of our music and march it earlier than usual. I want our band to grow musically as well as be better marchers and look really great out on the field.

Coosa High SPOTLIGHT ON:

SEAN BROWN Position: Tight End / Defensive End Class: Senior Sean Brown knows this is not a season for him to rest on his laurels. The 6-foot-5, 240-pound athlete committed to Tennessee in the spring, but that’s only made the Region 7-AA 2017 Defensive Player of the Year want to work harder. “Everything’s kind of changed in my life, with what’s happened with Tennessee, and it’s really made me step up my game in a lot of different ways,” he said. Brown had 54 tackles with 16 tackles for a loss, eight sacks, an interception and two defensive touchdowns last season. What do feel is your biggest improvement from last year? My biggest improvement is I got a little faster. I’ve got the size to play Division I football, but my biggest thing was my speed. I know that I’ve gotten a lot better at that over this past year. What do you feel is the team’s biggest strength this year? Our biggest strength is our skill players. I mean, we’ve got a three-year starting quarterback, good receivers and two all-region running backs. Our biggest thing is we’ve got to get our linemen ready. They’ve got to show up and keep working after losing three guys last year. What was a highlight for you last season? Probably winning the Chattooga game in double overtime. I think that’s what set the standard for the year for us. After that everybody had a renewed confidence, and you could tell they were ready to keep working, get better and go into the playoffs with the right mindset. What is your goal this year? Everybody’s goal is a state championship, but I just want us to do the best that we can and go as far as we can. We’ve been working hard. Everybody on our team has. And I just want to see it pay off. What’s your favorite part about Friday nights? It’s just the feel before the game of being with all of your brothers. I mean, there’s nothing like it. Once you’re done, you’re never going to be able to experience that feeling again. Your brothers are your family.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

TAYLOR SPURLING SENIOR

CHEERING THEM ON!

Coosa’s Taylor Spurling will complete her fourth year as a cheerleader for Coosa High School this season. After wanting to be a cheerleader from a young age, Taylor enjoys getting to spend a lot of time with her “second family” on trips to away games and under the lights at the Eagle’s Stadium. What do you enjoy the most about being a cheerleader? I think I enjoy being around all the girls the most, and to be able to hype up the crowd with my team. What made you want to be a cheerleader? I’ve always wanted to be a cheerleader after seeing how fun it was. I think it’s a fun experience. You’re supporting the basketball players and the football players, and you’re doing that with a bunch of girls that you love. How has being a cheerleader made an impact on your life? I think it’s made my life more exciting, with all the travelling to away games and the bus rides. I like the fun things we get to do, and being able to be a part of something like a second family. It’s really fun. What is your favorite part about Friday nights during football season? My favorite part about Friday nights is being able to do the band dances. The band plays a big role, and it’s always fun to have our dances go along with their music. That’s what gets the crowd the most hyped.

The enthusiasm of Coosa color guard captain Natalie Neace is apparent the moment she begins talking about being a member of the Eagles’ marching band. As a leader in the group this year, she is ready to take her responsibilities seriously as she helps to bring to life the band’s 2018 show, “Above and Beyond.” She even has some favorite songs from the program — “The Hymn of Acxiom,” by folk-pop singer Vienna Teng, and “Fly to Paradise” from the musical “Paradise Lost” by modern American composer Eric Whitacre. “I love those songs,” Neace said. “So it’s going to be awesome.” What do you enjoy the most about being a part of the marching band? I’ve been in the color guard and winter guard since I was in sixth grade and I love it. I want to keep doing it as long as I’m physically able. I just fell in love with it from the start. What are you looking forward to about this season? It’s my senior year, so it’s already special. But we’ve got lots of new girls in color guard this year. We’re a really big group this year. So I’m excited to see them grow and help them as much as I can. What’s your favorite part about Friday nights? Can I say everything? I love being out there with the whole band. We’re a family, and it’s all of my best friends in one place. I can’t explain the feeling of performing. It’s amazing. It’s my favorite thing to do, clearly.

Darlington SPOTLIGHT ON:

TATE RATLEDGE Position: Offensive Tackle/Defensive End Class: Junior Tate Ratledge has caught the eye of opponents and college recruiters during his time playing high school football. It comes with being a 6-foot-6, 280-pound four-star tackle. The Darlington junior had 18 pancake blocks last year and was just as impressive on the defensive front, racking up 56 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, 11 tackles for a loss and a pair of forced fumbles. What has it been like the last couple of seasons for you? It’s been a lot of fun building this family that we have here. Just getting closer as a family and closer as a team to try and achieve the ultimate goal of a state championship. We’re working hard for that every day. That’s what we want. That’s what we’re pushing toward. That’s what keeps us driving every day, knowing that’s a possible outcome. What do you feel is this team’s strength this season? Our defense should be really good this year between our defensive line and our linebackers. Our D-line is really good up front, and our linebackers can make plays. What’s something that you are looking to improve on this year? Technique more than anything. Not just knowing that I’m bigger than anybody and I can just come off the ball however I want. I need to work on technique-based stuff, like coming off the ball low, hand placement and not letting my temper get the best of me, because I did get some personals last year. What’s your favorite part about Friday nights? The energy. It’s amazing here. Our fans are amazing. The best thing is when we walk through the tunnel, and we have the bagpipe leading us out, and you can feel it, and then running through the tiger. It’s just different.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

HAYDEN BALDWIN SENIOR

CHEERING THEM ON!

Cheerleading has been a goal of Hayden Baldwin’s life for as long as she can remember. Looking up to the cheerleaders at school when she was a little girl in pre-K at Darlington fueled a desire for her to one day be a part of it. Now she gets to be in front of the crowds on Friday nights getting them excited about the Tigers on the field. How long have you been a cheerleader? I’ve been cheerleading for Darlington since my freshman year, but I’ve been cheering since middle school. What do you enjoy the most about being a cheerleader? I absolutely love the atmosphere on Friday nights. I love being in the middle of it all, especially when the crowd gets really excited, and being out there seeing how excited the boys get. What made you want to be a cheerleader? I’ve been at Darlington since pre-K, so I’ve always looked up to the cheerleaders. I just love the fact that I’m part of a team with such amazing girls, and that I get to be a part of something bigger. How has being a cheerleader made an impact on your life? All of our coaches hold us to a higher standard. They really expect us to be responsible. They want us to hold ourselves accountable. It’s more than just running cheers and doing dances. We learn to be on time, and pack for games. It’s more life skills than anything. What is your favorite part about Friday nights during football season? My favorite part is before the game starts and everyone is lined up and the team runs out and everyone is cheering them on. When the boys run out of the tiger you can feel the excitement. You can’t even describe it.

Model High SPOTLIGHT ON:

KWALIC DUBLIN Position: Running Back / Defensive Back Class: Senior

Last season saw the Blue Devils fight through tough times in Shannon, but fans realized they had some talented players at some skill positions to be optimistic about the future. Dublin is one of those players. The senior was named All-Region 7-AA at defensive back a year ago after racking up 51 tackles, five tackles for a loss and three pass breakups. What was last year like for you and what did you get out of it? Last season was an upset for us, going 1-9. The team was very young, so that’s kind of hard to overcome at times. But this year I believe we’re going to be a pretty good team. We’ve overcome some adversity, and that helps strengthen the bond among all of us. What do you feel is the team’s biggest strength? Honestly, our biggest strength is defense. Our defense has come a long way from last year. We’ve got more size, speed and just experience. We’re going to be pretty good on defense this year. What is the biggest goal for the team this year? Our biggest goal is playing with discipline and being region champs, hopefully. And from there, winning through the playoffs and going to state. What makes Model unique from the other teams in the area? It’s going through the adversity that we went through last year and still pick up our heads to go in and accomplish what we set out to do this year. I think that’s what separates us from other teams. What’s your favorite part about Friday nights? Going to get that touchdown to get that ‘W.’ Going all out to get those yards every game.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

MOLLY RYAN SCHRIMSHER, SENIOR

CHEERING THEM ON!

While it may be her final year cheering for the Blue Devils, Molly Ryan Schrimsher knows she will take a lot from her time on Model’s sidelines on Friday nights. She said she has been a cheerleader “all my life,” but just for four years at Model. She is hoping to use the confidence and lessons she has learned into college after graduation. What made you want to be a cheerleader? Ever since I was a little girl my dad would take me to the University of Georgia games and I watch the Georgia cheerleaders on the field all of the time and I knew that’s what I wanted to be. What do you enjoy most about being a cheerleader? I love being on the football field with my friends and cheering for the Blue Devils. What’s the best part about cheering on a Friday night? The best part is when the boys are behind the banner and they get hyped up, and you can hear the band start to play and the fans cheering, and then they run out on the field. How has being a cheerleader impacted your life? It made me more confident to be who I am and believe in myself. It helped me make new friends and just be a part of a family. This pair will be leading the Model Blue Devil marching band this season in their first seasons as drum majors. Madi, a senior, and Dawson, a junior, are helping bring to life the band’s 2018 show based on the Disney Parks show “Fantasmic,” featuring themes from several Disney movies. What’s it like for your first year as drum major? Madi: It’s exciting because I’ve wanted to do this since seventh grade. I’m just trying my best because it’s been a dream of mine for such a long time. It’s really fun. What do you like most about being in the band? Madi: I love how it’s like a family atmosphere. Everyone feels comfortable working together. It’s incredible to see how we start, set a goal and get to the end when we have a finished product. It’s an incredible feeling to be a part of something like that. What are you looking forward to the most about this season? Dawson: Like every year, I’m looking forward to being a part of something and making something great together as one unit. Madi: Making the new marchers comfortable and making a good impression on them. I want to inspire them to love band as much as we do so it will open up more opportunities in their lives. What’s your favorite part about Friday nights? Madi: I think my favorite part is going out on the field and having that moment right before the drum majors start with the first beat. It’s just a rush of adrenaline. Dawson: For me it’s being able to put on a product along with the football team and the cheerleaders that provides a good experience for the fans.

Columnist

I’M HOOKED ON ESTATE SALES AND I DON’T KNOW HOW TO QUIT

SEVERO AVILA

Time for me to have a big ol’ slice of humble pie. For months I’ve been making fun of my friend, Connie, for her addiction to estate sales. I’ve given her so much grief about buying dead people’s belongings. I’ve ridiculed her in several columns. But now I’ve got to admit that I’ve been bitten by the estate sale bug too. I get it. I get why Connie’s hooked on em. There’s an excitement in looking for estate sale information LQ WKH QHZVSDSHU DQG RQOLQH DQG ÀQGLQJ WKH RQHV that look the best. Many are right here in Rome but some a little farther away. And you’ve got to make a decision on which to go to. Many times the people handling the sale will list various items that will be avaiable. That lets you know if you wanna go. Are you in the mood for furniture, ceramics, tools, NLWFKHQZDUH UXJV" <RX ÀQG WKH VDOH WKDW KDV WKH stuff you’re looking for and you go to that one. But you gotta be careful. There’s an art to it. Connie is like a dang psychic when it comes to this stuff. She just has a feeling about which sales will be the best and which ones will be a bust. She hooks a trailer to her husband’s truck and they set off on Saturday mornings in search of treasures. Connie has a great eye for bargains and for getting the coolest things. She and I have the same taste in rustic, country furnishings so I’m always LPSUHVVHG E\ WKH WKLQJV VKH ÀQGV DQG SLOHV XS LQWR that trailer to take home. Finding a place for all her treasures is a bridge she crosses when she comes to it. And the woman can sniff out a bargain like a dang bloodhound. She’ll send me photos of the things she has bought - for example, a beautiful area rug she paid $50 for - and then she’ll send a photo of the same rug for sale online brand new and it’ll be worth several hundred dollars.

I’ve new to the estate sale game so I still rely on Connie to tell me where to go and what might be a good deal and what I should wait on. Oh, and I didn’t realize that most estate sale prices drop after a certain time of day, usually noon. After that the prices drop by 50 or 75 percent. So you have to weigh the risk of paying full price for something you want now, or waiting till it’s halfoff and hoping no one snags it before you do. It’s like a choreographed dance that takes place at homes across Rome and Floyd County each weekend and I’m just now learning the steps from a real pro. Connie has all the connections within the local estate sale game and she ain’t afraid to use ‘em. Oh, and when she shows up to these places, she knows half the people. They travel in packs and share information. So be careful out there or you too could be bitten by the estate sale bug like I have. If you see Connie coming, run the other way.

Pepperell High SPOTLIGHT ON:

JACK BENNETT Position: Middle Linebacker Class: Senior A starter since he was a sophomore, Bennett has had plenty of experience getting to know the Dragons’ defensive scheme. He played nearly every down on defense last season. As a senior, he will be looked upon to provide leadership to a squad that lost a solid group of players to graduation. What do you remember the most about last season? The thing I remember most is playing against Heard County and playing against a really good quarterback who is at Florida now. I had a really good season. We lost a lot of good players, but I think we’ll come back and do well this year. What do you try to do every day to be the best you can? I just come out and tell myself there is nothing I can’t do. I push myself to the fullest and be the best I can be. What do you feel is the team’s biggest strength this year? I’d have to say the team’s biggest strength is … I think our defense is going to do pretty well. We just lost a very good defensive coordinator and coach (Ricky) Holliday, our defensive line coach, is stepping in and taking over. I think he’s going to do a really good job. So I think we’re going to have a solid defense. We’re coming in with a new quarterback. We just lost a good one, as well as some good receivers and some good linemen. But I think, overall, we’re going to come out pretty strong. I think we’re ready. What is your favorite part about Friday nights? I don’t know. Just running out and seeing the dragon breathing fire. Running through the sign and the fire extinguishers. Hearing the fans yell and the band playing. It’s just the whole environment. It gives you chills. It’s powerful.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

EMILY PHIPPS SENIOR

CHEERING THEM ON!

It’s about carrying on the Dragon spirit for Emily Phipps, who is in her final season as a Pepperell High School football cheerleader. Emily gets excited about helping her community be a part of every game, and she has been a cheerleader at every level of Pepperell sports, from elementary school and up. What do you enjoy most about being a cheerleader? Just being able to show spirit and being able to support our school. I love being out there with all of my best friends and being able to support something I care about. Also traveling to other places and representing our school. What made you want to be a cheerleader? I wanted to get involved. I had taken gymnastics, but I wasn’t really involved in anything to do with our schools. Cheer was the only thing I could see myself being interested in, and once I did get into it I fell in love with it. How has cheerleading made an impact on you? It’s taught me discipline. It really teaches you about time management and how to care about other people beside yourself. It teaches you how to have sympathy and the importance of teamwork. Just, overall, about how to make yourself a better person for other people. What’s your favorite part about Friday nights? It’s really the whole atmosphere. You have the crowd’s energy and the sport itself with the players working hard. It’s special having the community want to support you and everybody moving toward the same goal. It makes you feel like we’re all out there for a reason. The football players feed off of the crowd, and it’s our job to make sure the crowd is pumped up. I like being a part of the process that helps them reach their goals.

Liggons has been in the Pepperell High School marching band since eighth grade and is looking forward to the group’s 2018 halftime show titled “Celebracion del Fuego,” a Spanish-style show that will include songs that Liggons said are not regularly heard in high school halftime shows. The title translates to “Celebration of Fire.” What do you enjoy most about being in band? I used to be an introvert, but I got in the band and I saw all these people talking to each other and acting like a family. That was kind of new to me, but I started getting into band I started to open up more. It seemed more natural to be myself and connect with people better. What are you looking forward to about this year’s show? Overall, I feel like this year is going to be a really good year because the music sounds really great. It’s one of my favorite shows we’ve done. I’m really happy because a lot of my friends are going to have solos, and for me to have a solo is pretty great as well. I’m really looking forward to everything this year. It’s my first year doing a Spanish-style show, and they are one of my favorite things to do. What do you hope the band accomplishes this season? I would really like to take home first in our class at competition this season. I think we can step up and do better against bands like Coosa, who is kind of our rivals. I’m really hoping everybody can keep up the hard work throughout the year. What’s your favorite part about Friday nights? Honestly, spending time with people — in the stands, before the game. It’s really great. You get to have fun. Playing in the stands with everybody, you get to dance. It’s fun being up there.

Rome High SPOTLIGHT ON:

JAMIOUS GRIFFIN Position: Running Back Class: Senior It’s not hard to imagine what Jamious Griffin’s goal is for this season. After being part of Rome High’s back-to-back state championships, he wants a third to round out his prep career. The high-power running back committed to NC State earlier this year and has a pair of 1,200-plus yard rushing seasons and more than 50 touchdowns to back up his recruiting. What does it mean for you to come into your senior season after the last two years? I’m very hyped. People may not think we’ll make it very far, but I’m at practice every day and I see what we’ve got, what kind of talent we’ve got. We’re going to bring a lot to the table this year. With guys like me, Knox and Xavier all coming up as freshmen all the way up to seniors, it’s going to be a special season. How big of a decision was choosing NC State and how do you feel now that it’s out of the way? It’s a big decision. You know, I had an opportunity to play with two of my brothers — Jaylen at Virginia Tech and Ja’Quon at Georgia Tech — but I had to see what was best for me. That’s why I went to NC State. They run the same offense that we run at Rome. And it was good to get it out of the way before the season started? I think it’s about worrying about Rome football now and nothing else. Don’t need to try and impress somebody else. Just do you. What do you feel it is going to take to win the state championship this season? We’ve got to play hard all four quarters. We can’t stay back and come out in the second quarter like we did sometimes last year. We have to play all four quarters every game. It’s going to be tough. What do you feel is this team’s biggest strength this season? Our offense is nearly the same as last year so that’s our strength. We can put up points on the board. What’s your favorite part about Friday nights? Being with my teammates all out together there having fun. Joining as brothers, playing together and winning together.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

MARICHIKA DAMMOND SENIOR

CHEERING THEM ON!

It’s not all just on the sidelines for Rome’s Marichika Dammond. The senior is a part of both the football and competition squad at Rome High, meaning she goes from the lights on Friday night to the tough routines on the mats on Saturday. What’s it like doing both competition and football cheerleading? It’s like two different types of cheers. When I’m in competition, we get to go up against other schools and cheer for ourselves while showing off all of the different skills that I have. In football, I’m cheering on my school and the football team to make sure they do well. What do you enjoy most about being a cheerleader? I like being able to cheer for the school and show school spirit. I like to put paint all over my face and have paw prints painted on my face. I like being loud and being excited about the games. I like football, so I like to get into the games and be there to help our fans get excited about them. How has being a cheerleader impacted your life? It helps me with leadership and working with people, because you are surrounded by a group of girls who you have to work with and cooperate with. It helps you communicate and interact with people. What’s your favorite part about Friday nights? My favorite part is definitely when we win a game. At the end of games when everyone is so excited and we’re all together and celebrating it. It’s like all of the pep rallies. I just like being together with everyone and enjoying winning.

The wave of cheers coming from Barron Stadium this fall will once again by highlighted by the Rome High School marching band, and Abby Davis is excited to see the more than 250-member Sound of the Seven Hills entertain the crowd. This year’s halftime show, “Machine,” is based around music selections that invoke imagination and creativity with the band creating parts of different machines during their performance. What do enjoy most about being in the band? I like being around all of the people that I love so much. We’re all really close and such good friends we work as a family together. Being able to do that and experience what we go through as one group brings us closer together. What’s one of your best memories about being in the band? I would have to say my sophomore year, in the very last competition, we won each category. Everybody was jumping up and screaming. It just showed how much hard work we had put into that summer and how much our devotion paid off. What are you looking forward to the most about this season? Since it’s my senior year, I really hope that we win our competitions because I would really like to go out with a bang. And I want the whole show to come together really well and that it’s amazing. What is your favorite part about Friday nights? I would have to say either performing — which is always amazing to show people what you’ve been working so hard — or when the football team scores a touchdown. Because the whole band goes crazy and we all play together. It’s us supporting the entire Rome High School. It’s really hard to decide between the two. It’s nice because the fans don’t just love football, they love the band too.

LASTING STRIPES: Coach Erik Whitworth a mainstay of Tigers football. By Jonathan Blaylock

T

he Georgia School for the Deaf football team has seen a lot of changes throughout its history. For one, the team hasn’t always been just for deaf athletes. For a period from 1960 to 1983, the GHSA allowed students who weren’t deaf to play on the team after the dissolving of the Cave Spring High football team. The team also went through a short-lived mascot change in the 1940s, when the Tigers, for one season, were known as the Blue Jays. But when the green and yellow Tigers take the field for the

- FOOTBALL 2018 upcoming season, there will be one thing that hasn’t changed for quite a while — the team’s head coach. Erik Whitworth is entering his 20th year as coach of the Tigers, and was one of the players who to joined the team as part of the Cave Spring High route. He played for the Tigers from 1978-1980, with the team going 5-5 in his final year on the field. After college, Whitworth returned to GSD, this time on the sidelines as a statistician and an assistant coach. In his time with the Tigers since taking over the program in 1998, Whitworth has seen a lot of players come and go. Throughout his years, though, he’s seen a few impressive athletes come to the school, most of which have been in the 2000s. One of those players is Timothy Simmons. He led the Tigers to a share of the national deaf championship in 2007, and, in his senior year, ran for 1,702 yards and 31 touchdowns. “He was a phenomenal player,” said Whitworth. “He’s one of those you almost didn’t have to coach him. If you coached

him too much you’d mess up what he already knew.” More recently, quarterback Jay Roberson, who played from 20072011, was also a highlight for Whitworth’s career. Both of those players were athletes Whitworth could trust to make their own decisions depending on what they saw on the field. Whitworth added his current quarterback, DeMarco Brown, to the list of impressive players he’s coached. While the Tigers didn’t have a winning season last year, Whitworth sees his value as a player, but also as a student others can look to as an example. “He’s got such a good nose for the ball,” Whitworth said. “He’s a tremendous athlete. They were athletes. They helped you on the field during the game. Those guys were good in school. Those were the guys that would keep the guys in line on the field and off the field.” Whitworth says most of the players he’s coached don’t go on to the next level. But he tries to make their time in high school a learning experience. Even if his players never don football gear again, they learn valuable lessons they’ll use later in life. Especially after losses, Whitworth prides himself on how his teams have handled themselves, which is a trait that hasn’t gone unnoticed as last year’s team won the Mason-Dixon Conference Team Sportsmanship award — a recognition the Tigers have won for five straight years.

“Yeah we got beat, we got knocked down, but that doesn’t mean we have to quit or give up,” Whitworth said. “Get beat, get knocked down, but pick it up, and keep on striving to do your best. “Learn what you can as much as you can and put it toward your future, and put it to stuff that’s not going to be on the field.”

Unity Christian

SPOTLIGHT ON:

DYLAN MCLAUGHLIN Position: Center/Noseguard Class: Senior After playing for Unity for the first time last season, McLaughlin found a good niche with the Lions as an anchor for the eight-man team’s front line. The 6-foot-4, 314-pound senior will be counted on as the center of an offensive line of returning starters as well as shore up the defensive line at nose to help shut down the inside run. What was it like to be out here and play on the team last year? I had played football for a while, so I knew the game, but it was good that we had a good season and went 9-2. It was fun to win and make new friends with all of the other guys on the team. What do you feel like has changed the most from last year? We lost a few players from last year, but also a lot of the players we had last year are getting better. So I think we should still have a good year. I think last year we weren’t sure if we could win any games after not winning any the year before. But this season we know what we’re capable of. What do you feel is going to be the team’s biggest strength? I think our line can be very good. We’ve got some linemen who are bigger than most players in our league. Is there anyone on the team that pushes you? Last year there were the seniors who would push me as the oldest on the team. But now, hopefully I’m going to step into that role of the guy who pushes everyone else. What’s your favorite part about Friday nights? Just the crowd getting into it and the support from our fans. Also just getting out there and being able to hit some people.

“I COULDN’T COMPLETE MY WORKOUT. WORKOUT.” For my heart, I choose hoose Red Redmond. Danny Open Heart Surgery

At 52, Danny was a world champion power lifter and could not imagine he had heart disease. But when he experienced symptoms of fatigue, shortness of breath, and nausea, his daughter suspected he was having a heart attack. He was taken by ambulance to Redmond’s ER where the heart team determined he had blockage in six arteries and needed immediate open heart surgery. Three years later, Danny is back to the sport he loves, telling his friends about the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Danny is thankful for Redmond, the only hospital in Northwest Georgia performing life-saving open heart surgery.

Oh, Charlie By Nubyjas Wilborn

The Atlanta Braves infielder and hometown hero talks Rome, his parents and MLB success ROME_55 56 57 Charlie Culberson Feature 55

7/29/2018 8:55:27 AM

C

harlie Culberson wasn’t guaranteed much when the Atlanta Braves acquired him as they traded away Matt Kemp to the Los Angeles Dodgers. But the Rome native worked his way into a contributing role for his “hometown” team this season, making as much of an impact as he can whenever he is in the lineup, either in left field, third base or shortstop. Culberson, 29, grew up a Braves fan like many Rome residents. He’s now made memories in a Braves uniform, just like the players he rooted for as a child. “It’s incredible to me that I’m here,” Culberson said. “This is something I’ve talked about for my whole life, and it’s happening. It also doesn’t hurt that we’re winning.” The Braves were 52-42 at the All-Star break, a half game behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the National League East lead after being in control of the division for most of the first half. Culberson has been directly responsible for a few of those wins. “He’s been a big part of our success,” Culberson doppelganger Dansby Swanson said. “You can’t say enough about him. He’s a phenomenal guy and phenomenal teammate. Every day, whether he’s playing or not, he’s the same guy. He makes everyone around better. When you have guys like that around, the sky is the limit. Charlie is such a versatile player. He can play nearly anywhere and get it done.” We were able to catch up with Culberson and discuss his journey in baseball and life in Rome.

ROME LIFE: How did it feel when you found out you were coming to Atlanta? CULBERSON: I got the call from (Dodgers GM) Farhan Zaidi to check in, and then he told me I was getting traded to the Braves. It was a bit surreal and a little bittersweet at first. We had just gone to the World Series, and the Dodgers were a great organization. But obviously coming back here and being so close to home was an appeal. I always knew I wanted to play here at some point in my career. I knew a lot the guys already so the transition was smooth. ROME LIFE: Who did call when you found out? CULBERSON: My mom and dad. I was with my wife and her

parents when I got the call from Zaidi. I told my dad to keep it under wraps until it was official. They were excited. ROME LIFE: How fun is that for them? CULBERSON: My parents love getting to watch me play ball. I spent my whole career on the west coast, so it was hard for them to watch me live. They’d come to see me when we played in Atlanta. But that was only once a year. They’d come out and see me on the west coast, but those flights and hotels add up. They prefer that hour drive much more. ROME LIFE: Do you make it back to Rome during the season?

CULBERSON: It’s easier during the offseason. During the season it’s easier for them to come down with the house and kids. But I go back four or five times, and I hit at my dad’s facility. We also still do camps and being back I hope to do more to help. ROME LIFE: What was your favorite memory of the Braves growing up? CULBERSON: I don’t have one specific memory per se. The team was always so good when I was growing up. I remember being excited to turn on the TV and see something great. I did get to face (Tom) Glavine and (John) Smoltz in rehab starts in low A in 2009.

ROME LIFE: Were you nervous? CULBERSON: A little bit. Smoltzie gave me a first-pitch slider. I grounded out. I had three at-bats against Glavine. Didn’t do so well, but it was a win-win experience. I got to face two future Hall of Famers. ROME LIFE: Speaking of memories how fun has this season been so far? CULBERSON: I’ve been up and down in the big leagues since 2012. I’ve never really had a spot. You gotta keep working. If you don’t produce you don’t eat. I made a decision to keep working. It’s been really cool to contribute. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.

Berry College Vikings Vikings hope to keep things rolling after stellar season While they may not have the history of most college football programs, Berry College has certainly made the most with the time they’ve had. And they’re not looking to take it easy any time soon. The Vikings are entering their sixth season, and while the going may have seemed rough early on, things have been looking better and better in more recent years. Berry finished 2017 with an 11-1 record to set the mark for most wins after defeating Huntingdon in the first

Kunczewski is optimistic about the talent the Vikings posses, but they do have some holes to fill, especially on defense with the loss of standouts like lineman Mamadou Soumahoro and linebacker Evan Breakspear. Soumahoro was the Southern Athletic Association and D3football.com National Defensive Player of the Year, and was AP Little All-America First Team. Breakspear led the team in tackles last season with 72. Defensive back Kevin Grier and lineman Bryson Lamboy look to help out with those missing pieces on the defensive side in their senior seasons. Grier was third in tackles for Berry in 2017 with 47, and Lamboy finished with 4.5 sacks. “We’re looking for Bryson to have a standout senior year, but he’s got to pick up some of round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs. the slack from ... He led Berry last year with 1,245 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns on 77 catches. “He had a phenomenal sophomore year,” Kunczewski said. “I think he’s going to be one of the better receivers, honestly, in the country by the end of this year. The Vikings will open the season Sept. 1 at Valhalla Stadium against the Maryville Scots.

Shorter University Hawks Hawks hoping for better results in 2018 The Shorter University football team has a lot riding on this season, and first-year head coach Zach Morrison is trying to get the program turned around. Morrison has tried to build the program up since taking over the reins in January by holding two recruiting camps over the summer which helped bring some attention to program. But he understands that is going to help the team down the road. In order to get things kicked off for the current crop of Hawks he has brought in a new coaching staff and the push of a new attitude in 2018. The Hawks will have a fresh start this season, which is something the team needs. Shorter has finished the last two seasons with no wins and hasn’t won a game since Oct. 3, 2015. But Morrison is confident in the players that will be on the field this season. “Our receiving core is probably going to be the deepest we’ve had,” Morrison said. One of those receivers who could kick-start the offense is Lewis Hayes, a senior who finished the 2017 season with 801 yards and four touchdowns, including a season-high 168 yards against West Florida. “Hayes has stepped up, and he leads by example. He’s good in the classroom and on the field,” Morrison said. Tyler Pullum returns for his junior season at quarterback. Pullum passed for 2,156 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, including a season-high 442 yards

against Mississippi College. Pullum is the Hawks’ all-time leading passer. An offensive workhorse for the Hawks two years, B.J. McCoy will return for his senior season. McCoy led the Hawks’ run game last season with 556 yards and three touchdowns on 164 carries. Morrison is also keyed in on Nehemiah Reddish, who is returning for his sophomore season. The Rome High grad finished 2017 with 68 tackles, one sack and one interception. He also had a season-high 11 tackles against West Alabama. Morrison feels his presence will have a big impact on the team this year. “I sat down and did evaluations for the team, and I had multiple players come in and talk about Nemo,” Morrison said. “He’s a kid that challenges kids to be better. He’s a great guy. He’s going to help us a lot this year. He’s a local kid from Rome, so he can really help out.” The Hawks will get their season underway Aug. 30 against Division I FCS program Samford in Birmingham, Alabama.

Panther Creek trail and falls is about five miles south of Tallulah Gorge. It’s somewhere Chase had wanted to go for the past few years and finally got the chance this year. He said there was plenty to do and lots of trails to explore.

Previous page: In early July Chase, Carrie, Annie (8) and Tripp (11) Watterson traveled to Northeast Georgia for a family adventure like no other. They visited Black Rock Mountain State Park and Tallullah Gorge State Park and spent a week exploring, hiking and camping. They took their dog Lulu along on the adventure.

Tripp and Annie at an overlook on Black Rock Mountain. They love camping and getting outside. Chase said at first the kids weren’t so enthusiastic to leave town and the comforts of home but once they got to their destination, they had a blast camping and hiking as a family.

A recreational swimming area in Tallulah Gorge offered beaching and swimming for the family. Chase suggested packing a lot of swimming gear since there are lots of opportunities to swim. Most hikes have opportunities to take a dip in the water, he said. Right: While Tallulah Gorge offers plenty of opportunities for swimming and hiking in the park itself and surrounding areas, Black Rock Mountain is a little more isolated, being on top of a mountain. So there are hiking opportunties there but not much else, Chase said. He was surprised by the great cell phone reception he got there, however. Below: Both parks are dog-friendly to a certain degree. At Tallulah Gorge, pets are not allowed on the gorge floor, sliding rock trail, and Hurricane Falls staircase to the suspension bridge. Leashed pets are welcome on rim trails.

Free permits are required to access the Tallulah Gorge floor and can be obtained at the Interpretive Center on the day of your visit. Visitors must wear proper footwear — no flipflops or Crocs. Chase said hikers descend to a suspension bridge then farther down to the gorge floor. He learned on this trip that his kids do pretty well on hikes. He was impressed at their endurance. Chase and Tripp made this hike and said they had to navigate steep trails and loose rocks and dirt. He wouldn’t advise taking anyone under 10 years old on the hike and strongly encouraged wearing appropriate shoes for the rigorous hike.

The Wattersons ate at Hawg Wild, a barbecue restaurant in Clarkesville, just south of Tallulah Gorge. They were on the way to Demorest for the Fourth of July celebrations. Chase said he had barbecue along with beans and brunswick stew. He said the food was so well prepared that he didn’t feel stuffed after leaving. It was a lot of food, but surprisingly light.

The steep hike down Tallulah Gorge was worth the end result for Chase and Tripp. They saw four waterfalls, a natural slip-and-slide and a cool swimming hole. Chase said the terrain made for a long hike in and out of the gorge. He injured himself while jumping onto a boulder near the swimming hole. It became infected and he’s still healing. But it was worth it.

High water marks are warnings to gorge visitors who must climb above the marks if they hear sirens letting them know the gorge is filling with water.

Carrie, Tripp and Annie on their first day at Black Rock Mountain, north of Tallulah Gorge. The family had camped outside the state on several trips and thought they needed to visit some Georgia locations. Chase said this was an absolutely beautiful part of Georgia and he’s glad the family got to experience it.

Panther Creek Falls was one of the coolest hikes Chase has ever been on. He said the hike is about 7 miles in and back out again. He loved the diversity of the hike - changes elevation, scenery and primitive campsites along the way. Plus the falls are some of the best he’s seen in Georgia.

Last season: 13-2. Lost to Alabama 26-23 in overtime in the national championship game. Key returners: J.R. Reed, S, Jr.; D’Andre Swift, RB, So.; Jake Fromm, QB, So.; Deandre Baker, CB, Sr. Key losses: Nick Chubb, RB; Sony Michel, RB; Isaiah Wynn, OT; Roquan Smith, LB. Outlook: Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has made quick work of making a name with the Bulldogs. In just two year, Smart was able to lead his team to the national championship game, which the Bulldogs lost 26-23 in overtime against Alabama. With the departure of some star running backs, the Bulldogs still have plenty of weapons. Georgia’s running will take a definite hit this season with the departure of Sony Michel and former Cedartown

star Nick Chubb. The duo capped their college career by combining for 326 yards in the Rose Bowl. They combined for 8,259 yards in their careers as Bulldogs. D’Andre Swift will take the reins of the running game, proving himself last year to be a successful backup behind Michel and Chubb. He finished last season with 618 yards and three touchdowns, while averaging 7.6 yards per carry. Included in that was a 64-yard touchdown run in the SEC championship game. The Bulldogs will also have a local addition to the defensive line as former Rome High player Adam Anderson moves on in his career. The defensive lineman was an integral part of leading the Wolves to back-toback state championships and was helped give Georgia one of the top

recruiting classes of 2018. Quarterback Jake Fromm returns for his sophomore season coming off an impressive freshman performance. He finished last season with 2,615 yards and 26 touchdowns with a 168.2 pass rating.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Auburn Tigers

South Carolina Gamecocks

Tennessee Volunteers

Last season: 13-1. Defeated Georgia 26-23 in overtime in the national championship game. Key returners: Jalen Hurts, QB, Jr.; Tua Tagovailoa, QB, So.; Xavier McKinney, DB, So.; Jerry Jeudy, WR, So., Henry Ruggs III, WR, So. Key losses: Da’Ron Payne, DL; Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB; Bradley Bozeman, C; Calvin Ridley, WR. Outlook: With two star quarterbacks at his disposal, head coach Nick Saban may use them as a dual threat this season. Junior QB Jalen Hurts led has been the leading quarterback for the past two season and has amassed 4,861 passing on his way to leading the Tide to back-to-back national championship games. Those are big stats to fill for sophomore quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He only passed for 385 yards in six games, but threw for five touchdowns and only one interception. Tide wide receiver Calvin Ridley went to the Falcons in the NFL draft, but receivers Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III look to be able fill in for Ridley.

Last season: 10-4. Lost to Georgia 28-7 in the SEC championship game and capped the season with a 34-27 loss to UCF in the Peach Bowl. Key returners: Jarrett Stidham, QB, Jr.; Marquis McClain, WR, So.; Nick Brahms, OL, Fr., Kam Martin, RB, Jr.; Ryan Davis, WR, Sr. Key losses: Kerryon Johnson, RB; Kamryn Pettway, RB; Carlton Davis, DB; Trey Matthews, DB. Outlook: Gus Malzahn returns for his sixth season as the head coach of the Tigers and has yet to reap the success of his first year when Auburn competed for the BCS Championship. The Tigers, who came up short against Georgia in the SEC title game last year, lost their leading rusher in Kerryon Johnson, leaving room for junior running back Kam Martin to step up. Martin rushed for 453 yards and two touchdowns, and was the Tigers’ second-leading rusher last season behind Johnson’s 1,391 yards and 18 scores.

Last season: 9-4. Capped the season with a 26-19 win against Michigan in the Outback Bowl. Key returners: Deebo Samuel, WR, Sr.; Jake Bentley, QB, Jr.; Bryan Edwards, WR, Jr.; Shi Smith, WR, So.; Bryson Allen-Williams, LB, Sr. Key losses: Hayden Hurst, TE; Skai Moore, LB; Alan Knott, OL; Cory Helms, OL. Outlook: Since taking over the program, Darlington graduate Will Muschamp has steadily guided the Gamecocks to more and more success. The former UGA player led the Gamecocks to a 9-4 season last year, which ended with a 26-19 Outback Bowl win against Michigan. The Gamecocks retain most of their top players, but will have spots to fill on offense as well as defense. Junior wide receiver Bryan Edwards returns after leading the Gamecocks last season in receiving with 793 yards. He also scored five touchdowns.

Last season: 4-8. Ended the season on a three-game skid capped by a 42-24 loss to Vanderbilt. Key returners: Jarrett Guarantano, QB, So.; Ty Chandler, RB, So.; Marquez Callaway, WR, Jr.; Brandon Johnson, WR, JR.; Madre London, RB, Sr. Key losses: John Kelly, RB; Rashaan Gaulden, WR; Kahlil McKenzie, OL; Reginald McKenzie, DT. Outlook: First-year head coach Jeremy Pruitt is hoping to turn around the Volunteers’ program that finished with a 4-8 record last season. Pruitt takes over head coaching duties after proving himself as a top defensive coordinator during time with Alabama, Georgia and Florida State. The Vols lost their leading rusher Josh Kelly to the NFL draft, but sophomore Ty Chandler and Michigan State transfer Madre London will take up the running duties. Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano returns, but the Vols also have Stanford transfer Keller Chryst, who both threw for just under 1,000 yards last season.

Clemson Tigers

Last season: 12-2. Finished 7-1 in conference play, dominated Miami 38-3 in the ACC title game, and closed out the season with a 24-6 loss to Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. Key returners: Kelly Bryant, QB, Sr..; Dexter Lawrence, DE, Jr..; Clelin Ferrell, DE, Jr..; Travis Etienne, So.; Travis Etienne, RB, So. Key losses: Dorian O’Daniel, LB; Deon Cain, WE; Ray-Ray McCloud, WR/CB Outlook: Dabo Swinney has built the Clemson Tigers into a strong, consistent presence in the ACC. The Tigers are 40-4 over the last three seasons, and while they have starters to replace on both sides of the ball, Clemson still has a lot of talent on offense and defense. Quarterback Kelly Bryant returns for his senior season after throwing for 2,802 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2017. On defense, lineman Clelin Ferrell comes back as a junior after leading the team in sacks (9.5) and tackles for loss (18).

GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS OFFENSIVE LEADERS RETURN TO HELP PICK UP RAMBLIN’ WRECK

Last season: 5-6. Finished the season losing four of its last five games, including a 38-7 loss to Georgia. Key returners: TaQuon Marshall, QB, Sr.; KirVonte Benson, RB, Jr.; Tijai Whatley, RB, Fr.; Qua Searcy, RB, Sr.; Key losses: Ricky Jeune, WR; Lance Austin, DB; Lawrence Austin, DB; Antonio Simmons, DE. Outlook: The Yellow Jackets return their biggest offensive performers from last season — quarterback TaQuon Marshall and running back KirVonte Benson. Marshall led the Jackets through the air and on the ground last season. He passed for 927 yards and threw 10 touchdowns, while rolling up 1,146 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. Benson was second on the team in rushing yards with 1,053 yards and six

Florida State Seminoles

Last season: 7-6. Finished the season with a 42-13 win against Southern Miss in the Independence Bowl. Key returners: Jamarcus Chatman, DL, Fr.; James Blackman, QB, So.; Cam Akers, RB, So.; Nyqwan Murray, WR, Sr.; Brian Burns, DE, Sr. Key losses: Josh Sweat, DE; Derwin James, DB; Auden Tate, WR; Ryan Izzo, TE Outlook: The Seminoles had six players taken in the NFL draft, the most since 2015 when they sent 11 on to the next level. Coming in to fill one of those spots on the defense is former Rome High defensive lineman Jamarcus Chatman. Chatman is one-fourth of the Wolves’ line who all went to Division I schools. The line also helped hold Rome’s opponents to an average of just over nine points per game last season. On offense, quarterback James Blackman returns for his sophomore season after passing for 1997 yards and 15 touchdowns last season.

touchdowns. The Jackets will also have two local players representing Rome on their team this season — Darlington’s Tijai Whatley and Rome High’s Ja’Quon Griffin. The Wolves’ defensive lineman helped lead Rome to back-to-back state championships. Griffin finished his senior season with 6.5 sacks and 12 tackles for a loss as part of a defensive line that gave up only 30 points in 15 games. Whatley helped the Tigers advance to the third round of the Class A Private state playoffs last season and racked up nearly 4,000 rushing and 50 touchdowns during his three years with the Tigers. On the season, he rushed for 1,502 yards and 23 touchdowns. Running backs Qua Searcy, Nate

Miami Hurricanes

Last season: 10-3. Fell to Clemson 38-3 in the ACC title game, and closed out the season with a 34-24 loss to Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl. Key returners: Travis Homer, RB, Jr.; Malik Rosier, QB, Sr.; Shaquille Quarterman, LB, Jr.; Joe Jackson, DE, Jr.; Lorenzo Lingard, RB, Fr. Key losses: Trent Harris, DE; Chad Thomas, DE, Christopher Herndon, TE; Mark Walton, RB Outlook: The Hurricanes had a total of six players selected in the NFL draft, including some of team’s leaders on offense and defense. The Hurricanes do have two choices at quarterback between senior QB Malik Rosier, who passed for 3,120 yards and 26 touchdowns last season, and freshman QB N’Kosi Perry. He guided Vanguard High School in Ocala, Florida, to a 10-2 record in his senior season while throwing for 24 touchdowns. Defensively, the Hurricanes return defensive lineman Joe Jackson, who finished 2017 with 50 total tackles, 10.5 for a loss and 6.5 sacks.

- FOOTBALL 2018 -

Cottrell and Clinton Lynch also return to help with the running game. However, the trio combined for only 697 rushing yards and one score last season, so the Jackets will need more from the group of backs.

Virginia Tech Hokies

Last season: 9-4. Capped the season with a 30-21 loss to Oklahoma State in the Camping World Bowl. Key returners: Jaylen Griffin, LB, So.; Josh Jackson, QB, So.; Sean Savoy, WR, So.; S Reggie Floyd, DB, Jr.; Ricky Walker, DL, Sr. Key losses: Tremaine Edmunds, LB; Terrell Edmunds, DB; Tim Settle, DL; Wyatt Teller, OL Outlook: The Hokies shouldn’t have any worries at the quarterback position, as long as the controversy surround Josh Jackson moves on. The sophomore threw for 2,991 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. Ricky Walker returns for his senior season after finishing 2017 with 41 tackles, including 12.5 for a loss, and 4.5 sacks. After being a redshirt freshman last year, former Rome High player Jaylen Griffin will also offer support on the defensive side at linebacker.

ROMANS CAN SIGN UP TO PADDLE THE

FLINT RIVER IN OCTOBER photo by Joe Cook

Georgia River Network, creator of Paddle Georgia, an annual weeklong summer canoe/kayak camping adventure, will return to the Flint River this October for its fifth edition of Paddle Georgia Fall Float on the Flint. The event is set for Oct. 6-8, charting a course from Baconton, just downstream from Albany, to near Bainbridge. Online registration is now open at www.garivers.org/paddle_ georgia/fallfloat.html Registration fees are $325 for adults, $280 for children 8-17 and $140 for children 7 and younger. Fees include six catered meals, camping facilities with restrooms and showers, shuttle service, an event t-shirt and more. To ensure not only a safe Fall Float, but also better information for all river users all year long, Flint Riverkeeper began weekly monitoring of bacterial levels on the lower Flint, from Albany downstream, in mid-July. The organization plans to continue the monitoring for the foreseeable future including the days leading up to Fall Float and during the journey to provide information about pollution levels to participants. “This is not a problem that is unique to the Flint,” said Joe Cook, Paddle Georgia Coordinator. “It’s a consideration on virtually every river in the state. Part of the purpose of Georgia River Network’s paddle trips is to bring attention to these problems and encourage improvements so that all our rivers are free from pollution 365 days a year.” This trip highlights one of the most scenic sections of the river, featuring lively shoals, limestone bluffs and beautiful blue hole springs. In addition to traveling about 16 miles on the river each day, participants will have the opportunity to learn about issues impacting the Flint, take part in water testing programs with Georgia Adopt-A-Stream and learn about the river’s unique fishes and mussels from biologists and scientists. The group will camp for three nights at Rocky Bend Flint River Retreat, a campground located on the river in Newton The trip is suitable for novice paddlers as well as experienced paddlers. Paddlers range in age from four to 84, with many families participating. In 2017, more than 120 paddlers made the three-day Columbus Day weekend journey. Fall Float on the Flint is an offshoot of Georgia River Network’s annual 7-day summer voyage that takes place on a different river each year. Since its inception in 2005, GRN’s Paddle Georgia trips have guided more than 4300 people down 14 different Georgia rivers while raising more than $400,000 for river protection. Fall Float on the Flint serves as a fundraiser for GRN and Flint Riverkeeper.

Georgia River Network is a non-profit 501c3 organization working to ensure a clean water legacy by engaging and empowering Georgians to protect and restore our rivers from the mountains to the coast. Flint Riverkeeper is a 501c3 organization working to restore and preserve the habitat, water quality and flow of the Flint River for the benefit of current and future generations and dependent wildlife. Those interested in participating can get more information at the Paddle Georgia website or by contacting Joe Cook at 706-409-0128 or joecookpg@gmail.com.
