News, views and analyses for global health, prosperity and environmental quality. Via email from South Africa and Washington, D.C. January 21, 2021 This article was written by two nuclear experts from South Africa: one white, the other black, but both native South Africans who love their country and continent and want them to prosper. It’s timely because many Americans and Europeans – without having real knowledge of Africa, or even being asked for their opinions – are advising Africans to “leapfrog” fossil fuels and go right to “renewable” wind and solar energy, which has multiple limitations, especially in and for Africa. It also offers lessons about modern nuclear power for the incoming Biden Administration, which wants to “transform” the United States away from fossil fuels to those same “renewable” energy sources, with very little mention being made of either renewable energy shortcomings or nuclear energy advantages. Other countries are in a similar predicament. Thank you for posting their article, quoting from it, and forwarding it to friends and colleagues. (This time I am sending a short version and a more detailed version right after the short one.)
