President’s Report
The restructure of the office is going well and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome to Dogs Victoria four new members of staff, Debbie Parker (Office Operations Manager), Lyn Wakefield (Leader – Registration, Licencing and System Support), and Dawn Szommer (Registration and Licencing Officers) and Jackie Morison (Communication and Marketing Officer).Currently we are in the process of interviewing the short-listed candidates for the CE role and by the time you are reading this we hope to have this position filled as well.
To assist with the facilitating of new staff members I advise the Dogs Victoria administration office area is to be accessed by staff only. Members are only permitted to access the reception area of the office.
For a long time, I have believed Dogs Victoria does not take the full advantage of modern technology. Management is now well committed to exploring options that will provide a better and more efficient outcome for our members. As soon as we have something locked in, I will email all of you with what I hope will be an exciting update.

We have now updated regulation 7.7.6 in line with changes made by Dogs Australia removing the need for a judge’s signature on challenge, best of breed and performance sports qualifying cards and certificates.
With winter well upon us it makes one really appreciate the fantastic indoor facility we have at KCC Park. I am asking that everyone be considerate of our fellow exhibitors by only taking up as much room as we physically need and more importantly cleaning up after we have groomed our dogs.
Thank you,
Peter Frost | President Dogs Victoria

Breed Spotlight - Weimaraner & Weimaraner (Longhair)
Brief History
These dogs were kept during the early part of the 19th century at the Court of Weimar in Germany. Towards the middle of the century, they were found almost exclusively in the hands of professional hunters and forest officials in central Germany, especially in the regions of Weimar and Thuringia where they were usually bred solely for hunting. In addition to the shorthaired Weimaraner, there appeared a longhaired variety. The Weimaraner has remained purebred and basically free of crossbreeding ever since they was first recorded in the official breed stud book. They are therefore the oldest German pointing breed, having been purebred for about 100 years. The versatile Weimaraner (nicknamed the “Grey Ghost” due to the unique colour) is a dedicated companion dog.

Average Life Span
When considering a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime. The average life span is 9 to 12 years.

Temperament
The breed has a laid back and affectionate temperament. They are sociable dogs who will do best when fully integrated into the family and are usually happy to meet strangers. These are also very energetic dogs, who will be restless and destructive if they do not get enough daily exercise.
General Breed Description
The Weimaraner is a medium to large size hunting dog of functional working type, pleasing in shape, sinewy and very muscular. This is a utility gundog with high prey drive and a protective instinct. He is intelligent and learns quickly but may be somewhat stubborn. He excels in such dog sports as obedience, agility, tracking, retrieving and conformation dog shows. The difference in appearance between males and females is easily recognised.
Weimaraners come in two coat varieties. The Weimaraner has a short, strong, very dense, smooth lying topcoat without or only with very sparse undercoat. The Weimaraner (Long Hair) has a soft, long topcoat with or without undercoat. Colours come in silver or grey of various shades, sometimes with white markings on chest or toes.

Quick Facts
• President Dwight D. Eisenhower owned a Weimaraner named ‘Heidi’ who lived in the White House with the First Family
• The Weimaraner is blessed with exceptional tracking ability, incredible athleticism and brains, all of which are essential to their work
• Celebrity Grace Kelly and artist William Wegman have owned Weimaraners. Wegman is famously known for his Weimaraner artwork.
Breed Spotlight - Weimaraner & Weimaraner (Longhair)
Coat and Care Requirements
Shortcoat: They have a short coat that is strong, very dense, and sleek. The Weimaraner requires only minimal grooming and thus wiping down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient in between baths. Using a grooming mitt on their coat during shedding season is advisable.
Long Coat: They have a soft, long topcoat with or without undercoat. It may be smooth or slightly wavy. Hair at the base of the ear is long and flowing, with velvety hair on tips of the ears allowed. The hair is longer on chest, back of legs and tail than the rest of the body and there is hair between the toes. They require only minimal grooming. Wiping them down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient in between baths. Using a grooming mitt or shedding knife on the coat during shedding season is advisable. Both breeds will require nails trimmed as necessary.

Size
Height: Males: 59 to 70cms, Females 57 to 65cms
Weight: Males 30 to 40kgs, Females 25 to 35kgs

Breed Spotlight - Weimaraner & Weimaraner (Longhair)
Suitability
The decision to own a Weimaraner needs careful consideration, as they require an active person with a keen interest in the companion dog, someone prepared to give the dog the regular exercise, love and attention they will demand. He is an intelligent breed and learns quickly, but some may be stubborn. Training and socialisation should be started when young and should be firm, consistent and gentle. They are a dog that do not kennel well. They do not like to be relegated to the back yard and forgotten; they like to be with you as part of the family.

Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about the breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The Weimaraner is generally a healthy breed, however health conditions do occur occasionally. These may include hip dysplasia (HD), bloat and skin allergies.

In Conclusion
Now you know a little more about this breed. If you have decided this is the dog for you and wish to investigate further, please contact the breed club or Dogs Victoria. They will be able to give you information about available puppies and also suggest dog events where you can see the breed and speak to breeders. In this way you will gain a better perspective of the breed and its needs. With any breed of dog, it is important to research and determine suitability for your lifestyle before committing to a puppy which will be a part of your family for many years to come.
Whilst many breeds are recommended for families, it is imperative that when children are with dogs they are supervised at all times. Basic obedience training is a vital part of dog ownership.
Dogs Victoria is about the responsible ownership of all dogs and in particular the preservation of pure breeds. Link to Dogs Australia Breed Standard: Weimaraner

KCC PARK FACILITIES COMMITTEE
Update from KCC Park Facilities Committee
New garden bed southern boundary near the dam –The 100 trees we planted on 15 May forming the new garden beds and growing at a rapid rate, which is most pleasing.
Pavilion car park line marking – Several meetings have been held to change the layout of the pavilion car park. We are hoping by August the new lines will be painted. However, it is quite saddening to see members parking in disabled car parks, without have a valid permit displayed in their windows, and members parking in roadways.
Working bees – Don’t forget on the third Wednesday of the month between 9 am to 11 am the committee hold a working bee at KCC Park. Everyone is welcome and we would love to see more members at these events. A morning tea is provided for all the volunteers that attend.
South East Water community grants Program – In April we also put in a submission for a $10,000 grant for this program. Sadly, we received a response and we were not successful. A lot of work was undertaken completing this application.
Lyndhurst rooms renovations – This is a major piece of work. All the costings have been completed, and the project has been approved. The cabinets have been ordered and we are anticipating the kitchen will be installed by the end of August.

The kitchen will include an automatic handwash and large counter. We are installing a commercial high speed dishwasher, double door fridge, and single door freezer. We are also building a walk in lock up pantry to house the bulk of items affiliates use to cater at events. The northern end of the kitchen will be closed for several weeks during the works. We are trying to minimise the impact to affiliates.
Future member projects/bequests/donations – We are always happy to discuss any proposals with you to improve member amenities on the grounds. We also need more funds, if you can assist, please speak to us.
We spend a lot of hours on the site for the betterment of our dogs and our members. Our hard working committee meets monthly. If you have any questions, queries or ideas, please contact the KCC Park Facilities Committee at perfu@bigpond.com.

Alison West “Llandaff”
25 February 1936 - 4 April 2024

One of Alison’s great life passions were her dogs – Welsh Corgis – Pembroke and Cardigan. Her husband bought her a Welsh Corgi (Pembroke) as a wedding present in 1960. Benwick Marshall was the start of it all. Encouraged to show, and whilst he was not up to show quality, she had been bitten by the bug. Alison purchased her first show dog from Ethel and Frank Hughes (original custodians of the Llandaff prefix) and this was shortly followed by Ch Llandaff Black Prince - a multiple all breeds best in show winner and challenge dog at Adelaide Royal when the classes for Pembrokes were huge. Alison imported Ch Marsh Bright of Elsdyle (Imp UK), and Ch Mercury of Elsdyle (Imp UK) retired at Llandaff when Ethel and Frank returned to England.
It was 1986 when Alison became smitten with the Cardigan Corgi – a particular dog called Ch Cambrian Typecast. A repeat mating produced Ch Cambrian Wedgewood who joined Llandaff in 1987. Alison and daughter Jan, bred/owned 33+ Cardigan champions including four grand champions and one supreme champion and multiple all breeds best in show winners. Alison loved Royals and considered Royal wins special. She was also involved in obedience and more recently rally obedience, where she put many performance titles on dogs. One of her real loves was “Badger” Gr Ch Llandaff The Black Prince (AI) RN (pictured) - great show dog and her constant companion.
Alison held the role of secretary for 35 years of the local Sunraysia Club, being awarded life membership in 1983. Alison was awarded life membership of the Kennel Control Council in 1991. 2023 saw Alison recognised for 60 years membership of Dogs Victoria. She continued to work at local shows as a DV representative, ring steward and ticket writer until 2019. Alison mentored many people and always was there for practical advice. She collected dog statues and donated several to the Canine Museum. She also authored a book called Cardigan Corgi Capers to promote the Cardigan Corgi.
Forever in our hearts.

OTEC NOTES
The most important issue at present is the obedience and rally rule changes. OTEC held two meetings, one in person at KCC Park, one via Zoom so more people could have the opportunity to attend. Both meetings were well attended with lots of discussions and lots of different opinions, as it should be. Watch out for the notices for the combined national motions, which will be notified.
Kings Birthday was a busy weekend with the GSDCV tracking trial at Haddon. The weather Gods smiled; the ground was good except in the bush where the gorse is taking over. I had one test nine track on what I call the Sweetheart track. Sadly for us, the Field and Game Club has combined with another club and need more shooting areas. Part of that area, where the gorse has been chopped and mulched, makes it difficult for dogs to work on. Even so, they all passed. Originally, as a precaution, the club had to ballot some test nine. “Saint Ken” Mackay managed to find extra paddocks and all were able to be accommodated. The pass rate was good at the lower end, but judges noted that some dogs and handlers had not been prepared for the extra challenges for test nine. I seriously believe that the dogs find the streets more to their liking. Once they have their TS grand, it is hard to go back to paddocks. Overall, a fun weekend with lots of food, warmth and lots of laughs.
The Kings Birthday weekend is also famous for the Gippsland trials. Bairnsdale on Saturday, East Gippsland on Sunday and Gippsland on Monday. Again, lots of fun and many successes.
Lorna Piper contributed with “An absolute massive thank you to everyone at our trial. The competitors are so important, thank you to those that gave up their own time to help out with our surprise shortage of stewards, I don’t want to forget anyone. What a supportive group of people the obedience and rally people are. Once again (a big thank you - Max the bbq chef was forgotten by me,) to our members who supplied the food and the culinary crew that

made sure we were all fed and watered. The judges as always are special people that continue to support our little club. It was great that our VCA representative had nothing onerous to do, thanks Steve. Not to forget the people that help set up the equipment and the rings and those that helped pack everything away along with the new trainees for preparing pass cards. The other trials in East Gippsland and Gippsland had good entries and very pleasing results.
The following weekend was the OTEC triple rally trial. More about that next month.
The German Shepherd Club of Vic Inc held a very well organised endurance test at Tatterson Park. It was organised in great detail with everything thought of and everything worked like clockwork. The weather was perfect while the trial was on. The vet crew did a great job, led by a vet who used to work at Monash and now works with Stuart Mason at Doncaster. For some reason we couldn’t get our usual number of willing vet students, Dearne Jackson and other instructors came to the rescue and took temperatures and heart rates and checked pads. Michael Stuart was the judge, John Schultz was the pacemaker and there were plenty of stewards and marshals on hand.
Ross Carlson reported that the end of June saw the Rottweiler Club of Victoria host their restricted to breed obedience and rally trials. There were quite a number of new teams joining both obedience and rally and both judges (Maribeth and Ross) noted that the level of training was very impressive. It was great to see new teams perform so well. Dawn Ayton did extremely well with her girl, winning advanced rally at both trials. Most notable on the day was the success of Sue Crankshaw and her girl Candy who achieved their rally champion title. As great as these titles are to achieve, they mean a little bit more when achieved at your own breed club event. This event was very enjoyable, and the club should be really pleased with their success.

Breed in Review - Hungarian Vizsla
Brief History
The Vizsla is the national dog of Hungary. Its early origins are hard to trace, but its history probably began in the ninth century. The Vizsla was owned by Hungary’s sporting nobility and before firearms were introduced in the 1700’s, was used to scent and search for birds that were then either caught by falcons or netted. An allpurpose gundog, the Vizsla could hunt, point and retrieve both feather and fur on land or from water. Few survived the wars in 20th Century Europe, but during the Russian occupation, many nationals fled Hungary with their dogs, and the breed subsequently became established over a wider area of Europe. They eventually arrived in other continents, with the first Vizsla coming to Australia from the UK in 1973.

General Breed Description
This is a medium sized, elegant, multipurpose gundog of noble appearance with a distinctive short, russet gold coat. A demonstratively affectionate and lively dog, he is happiest when fully involved in family activities. As well as working in the field, the versatile Vizsla competes in a variety of dog sports, including obedience, rally, tracking, and conformation dog shows.

Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about the breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The Hungarian Vizsla is generally a healthy breed, however health conditions do occur occasionally. These may include hip dysplasia (HD) and elbow dysplasia.

Suitability
This is not a dog to be left alone in the backyard as it can become destructive if bored. The ideal owner is someone who is active and willing to put time into training and who wants a loving companion who is fully involved in their home life. Socialisation and early positive reinforcement training is essential. The Hungarian Vizsla learns very quickly and responds well to obedience training, due to his great desire to please. They do require daily exercise, so are best suited to those with an active lifestyle.

TRICK DOG
In January 2024, the Dogs Australia Dances with Dogs introduced a grand champion class in both freestyle and heelwork to music. This was very exciting as it gave the competitors another level to aspire too.
I am very happy to announce that Victoria now has two freestyle grand champions – Kerrie Piper with Sprocket and Janette Wilson with Scarlette.
Kerrie Piper was the first competitor to gain their title followed by Janette Wilson – both gained their titles at the State Dances with Dogs competition at Coimadai on 9 June 2024.
Here are their stories…
Kerrie Piper and Sprocket
Sprocket’s freestyle career began in 2018 with a routine to the Fraggle Rock theme. Those familiar with the Fraggles may remember the large scruffy clever sheepdog with the long waggy tail – his name, Sprocket! It was the perfect song to begin this boy’s amazing journey through musical freestyle. Trialling a total of six different routines Sprocket progressed through the competition levels. In August last year my quiet boy Sprocket was awarded his freestyle champion title to Shakira’s Try Everything.
When the latest rule review set a new challenge - grand champion - Sprocket and I were of course keen to continue. We completed our grand champion freestyle title in June with a best in trial award to our eighth competition routine, A Whole New World from Disney’s Aladdin. We had so much fun with it, we’re going to trial it at the next competition too.
Introducing - FSGrCh HTMCh RCh Neut Ch Nyanga Midnite Trooper CCD RAE SWN TKI PT ET

Janette Wilson and Scarlette Scarlette started her DWD career alongside her obedience and rally career in 2012, at around 12 months of age. With her love of learning and her athletic body, she achieved great success at the earlier classes. However, she then took a break from DWD to concentrate on other sports, only returning to DWD in the past couple of years when our dancing shoes were calling us back to the competition ring.
It was in 2023, at the age of almost 12 years of age, that Scarlette achieved her freestyle champion title (in South Australia) and her heelwork to music champion title (at the Dogs Victoria committee competition). At the start of 2024 when the new Dogs Australia rules introduced grand champion titles, we found the perfect music for some new routines and re-entered the competition ring.
Firstly, with Waltzing Matilda (by The Seekers) and then with You’re My Best Friend (by Paul Canning), we enjoyed our return and the subsequent success being awarded freestyle grand champion title at the Dogs Victoria committee competition in June this year.
With her rocky start as a Lost Dogs Home pup, Scarlette has excelled in everything that she has tried - as a competition dog, an approved pet therapy dog, but best of all a loving canine buddy.

What is an anal gland abscess?
Anal glands are two sac-like structures located on the left and right side of the anus. These glands produce a foul-smelling secretion which is released when the dog defaecates or is excited. An anal gland abscess occurs when the gland becomes infected. Once infected pus builds and hence prevents the secretion from exiting the sac. The anal swells with the fluid forming a painful abscess, in some cases the abscess may burst outwardly. There is no breed, gender or age group that are more likely to develop anal gland abscesses. The causes proposed for the development of anal gland abscesses is quite varied and includes underlying diseases and allergies.
What signs are seen with anal gland abscesses?
The signs displayed are as follows:
• scooting the anal area along the floor in an attempt to release the fluid
• Biting and licking at the anal area
• Showing discomfort around the anal area
• Swelling and redness of the affected anal area
• Reluctance to defaecate
• Matting of the hair at the anal area
How are anal gland abscesses treated?
Standardly the anal glands are emptied if possible. If the abscess has burst the area is cleaned. Normally this can be done without sedation, but in some cases, sedation is required for this procedure to be performed thoroughly. Normally the dog is placed on antibiotics to treat the infection, and anti-inflammatories to reduce the swelling and pain.
What should be done if the issue recurs?
Being scent glands, the anal sacs are not necessary for the dog’s health. In cases where the anal glands continue to become infected or abscess it can be recommended to remove the glands to prevent recurrence.
Can anal gland abscesses be prevented?
The best way to prevent the issue occurring is to find the cause and remove it. For example high fibre diets can assist in some cases, as can hypoallergenic diets where allergies are the underlying cause.

Sources of anxiety you may not even notice
Home sweet home may mean peace and quiet to you. But to your dog, the same home could sound like a marching band. Dogs hear many high-frequency noises that are undetectable to the human ear and may cause them to feel stressed. A study of 13,700 pet dogs showed that noise sensitivity was the most common trait to cause anxiety in dogs, showing up in almost one-third of the dogs.

What is noise sensitivity?
Noise sensitivity describes a dog who is fearful or startled by environmental noises. To avoid confusion, it would be better described as fear of noise. When a dog is severely frightened and/or has a tough time recovering from exposure to noise, it could have a noise phobia.
Most adults hear sounds up to 20,000 Hertz (HZ). Dogs, however, hear sounds that reach frequencies as high as 47,000 to 65,000 HZ. We don’t know for sure why dogs and some other mammals are sensitive to high-pitched noises. It’s possible that their hearing evolved to strengthen their ability to locate where these sounds are coming from, which is especially important when hunting prey.
Causes of noise sensitivity
The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine conducted research on the effect of noise sensitivity. They found that dogs were more likely to have a strong, anxious reaction to high-frequency, intermittent sounds, such as smoke detector warning beeps, than to low-frequency continuous sounds, such as microwave humming. Their research also showed that some owners underestimate noise fearfulness in their dogs.
Dr Jill Goldman, a certified applied animal behaviorist, found that sound sensitivity varies for each dog. “Certain dogs of different ages or breeds may react to a variety of sounds. A dog’s health can affect his audible range and reaction to noise,” she says. “Prior experience and exposure also make a difference – when a young dog is exposed to a sound and the initial exposure isn’t traumatic, they can become habituated or desensitised.”
Most of us have high-frequency sounds in our homes, yards, and neighbourhoods: electronic doorbells, smoke detectors, microwave ovens, vehicle backup alerts, electric fences, insect zappers, ultrasonic rodent deterrents. “Many dogs don’t like the sound of vacuum cleaners, electric drills, loud blenders, and high-efficiency washers that have a loud spin cycle,” says Dr Borns-Weil.

Signs your dog is anxious about a noise
Understanding your dog’s changes in behaviour and body language will help you recognise when your dog is having a difficult time with a particular noise in their environment.
“The intensity of the dog’s fear determines the response. If the fear is mild, the dog may seek out the owner or a safe space (like under the bed) and may show a low body posture with tail down or tucked and ears retracted or may engage in yawing or lip licking,” Dr Borns-Weil says.
“A very fearful dog may tremble, cower, try to escape from the house, urinate or defecate, pace, pant, drool, and have a rapid heart rate.”
IS YOUR DOG NOISE SENSITIVE?

Some dogs react to noise, others don’t
“All dogs are at risk of being startled by a loud and unexpected noise, like a fire alarm. Most dogs are resilient enough to recover from experience and do not generalise the fear to other sounds,” according to Dr Borns-Weil.
“However, some dogs will generalise and associate one sound that frightens them with other sounds,” says Dr Goldman. For example, for weeks after a lasagna overflowed in my oven, causing the kitchen smoke detector to beep, my dog asked to go outside each time she heard me turn on the oven.
Researchers have concluded there may be a genetic component to noise sensitivity, which often begins in very young dogs. Other studies report that dogs may react fearfully to noises they experience with trauma, noises they’ve seen other dogs react to fearfully, or sounds that generate a strong reaction from their owners. There also appears to be a correlation between a lack of socialisation and noise sensitivity.
How to help your noise-sensitive dog
When dogs react fearfully to household noises, their health, safety, and quality of life may be affected. “It’s important for caregivers to understand and be sensitive to why this dog has a problem – to consider where the dog has been,” Dr Goldman advises. “Has it lived a very sheltered life and not been exposed to a variety of auditory experiences?”
Dr Goldman recommends these steps to bring relief to a noise-sensitive dog:
• Talk to a veterinarian: Visit your dog’s veterinarian first to rule out any underlying medical factors. When a dog is in pain, they may react fearfully to sounds that don’t typically cause anxiety.
• Pay extra attention: If you observe a pattern of behaviour, find out what’s happening at this location that might be causing it. It’s often easier to change your environment by removing the source of the noise, than to modify your dog’s fear-based behaviour.
• Start early: Puppies who hear gentle recordings of loud sounds and receive treats can learn to associate those noises with positive outcomes.
• Provide the dog with a safe place to go: Whether it’s a crate or under the bed, make their go-to spot as insulated and welcoming as possible. Offer a calm space and train the dog to relax and go to their safe spot.
• Give anti-anxiety medication: In severe cases when a sound can be isolated, medication prescribed by a veterinarian and used on a short-term basis may help when used in conjunction with behaviour modification.

RAFT NOTES
2024 Dogs Victoria Utility Gundog State Championship Field Trial
After all of the setbacks of 2023 and the uncertainty as to whether or not Victoria would maintain an open game bird hunting season, it is very satisfying to state that the UD field trial fraternity ran every scheduled field trial this year (11 events), culminating in the state championship conducted on the 22 & 23 June 2024.
Experienced judge and handler Russell Thomas judged the state championship, with his fellow RAFT UD representative David Blacker managing the event. Russell was assisted in the field by his steward Clayton Arthur and had the services of Stephen Luck and Paul Anderson for the setting up and running of the water work.
The trial was conducted in the northern Victoria area, and we are grateful for the help from Steve Burke in obtaining the use of suitable paddocks, something Steve has done on a number of times this year and many times in the past. Naturally trials cannot be conducted if farmers and hunters do not allow access to land containing a sufficient number of birds to evenly test all dogs and handlers. Thirteen dogs entered the state, 11 German Shorthaired Pointers, one Weimaraner and one German Wirehaired Pointer. Unfortunately, the Weimaraner was a scratching.
On day one the first round of field work was run in cool conditions on native grass, with the majority of dogs demonstrating sufficient ability to fill their cards and progress to round two. Excellent work was displayed by Marc Pigatto’s Saetta Emilia (Remi), Steve Burke’s dog FT Ch Pointgold Last Chance (Magpie) and Peter Attard’s bitch Freezepont Jedda (Jedda), giving them a lead on the scoreboard heading into round two. There were two dogs whose day did not proceed as planned and they did not progress to round two.
Round two saw birds a bit harder to find and the weather warming up, making it tougher going for the dogs. A second paddock was used and then a third to ensure that all dogs were given equal opportunity. Still, good work was shown, and only one dog was eliminated from competition, with nine qualifying to undertake the water run the following morning.
A leisurely start to the day saw the water run commence around 9.30am on Sunday. Russell had set up testing but fair water work, with a relatively short mark thrown across water as a walk up, then swing around and shoot at a blind, also across water, and to the handlers left. Dogs needed to retrieve the blind bird first followed by the mark. Unfortunately, some of the highest scoring field dogs did not successfully complete the water run, and three dogs were eliminated. The highest scoring dog on the water ended up being the winner of the trial. This bitch also won the previous state championship conducted in 2022.

LIBRARY NOTES
By the time members read this the library will have all our latest additions to our collection on the shelves and available for loan. Recently sprintdog has been added to the Dogs Victoria performance calendar and we encourage members to come into the library and look through our collection. We have many books and DVDs on fitness, training, diet and massage.
As always, the library is happy to accept any donations members may have be they books, pedigrees, photos (labelled with the registered name is always wonderful) we also have a large collection of periodicals with lots of gaps especially older ones. So, we happily take those too.
If you would like to come on board and help us, you are more than welcome!
Just a reminder if you have items that need to be returned, the library shute is always accessible and lives on the wall between the window and the office letter boxes.

BOOK REVIEWS

The Essential Weimaraner Patsy Hollings
A slim but comprehensive book on the silver ghost by the famous Patsy Hollings of Gunalt Weimeraners (UK), published by dog expert publishers Howell Book House.
The book covers breed evolution, adding a Wei to your family, care, breeding standards, showing, working, breeding and whelping, and reviews of the UK and worldwide kennels.
For the breed lover, this is an essential book you can delve into regularly to find great information and lovely blackand-white photos. For the breeder it offers sound advice on practicalities and some nice illustrations on discussions on how to assess a dog against the breed standards. The breed standards may have changed a little since publication (1996) but will still be similar to current-day ones.
Handling for the show ring is also discussed in detail and supported by informative photographs.
The chapter on the working Wei, covers a range of skills and look out for the inspiring photos of Paul Dodd and his boy Thor.
The kennel reviews are short but very interesting to see how, why and where each has gone. UK kennels reviewed include Monroe, Ragstone, Linosa, Cannylad, Hansom, Verrami and Gamepoint and at least 20 more. Another 13 are reviewed in the worldwide section, where you will find a lot of Australian names. The North American review has been contributed by Judy Colan.
If you can’t find a copy in your library, borrow the Dogs Victoria copy.

The Cordlet
The Dogs Victoria library holds a handful of books on the Puli and a good collection of Puli publications.

The Cordlet was published by the breed passionate Hungarian Puli Club (UK) and is a comprehensive review and celebration of the Puli. Featuring reports and reviews from around the world as well as the UK and advertisements. As with most breed club newsletters and magazines, this publication is a wealth of detailed information and history appropriate for breeders, would-be owners, breed enthusiasts and naturally trainee judges.

Continues 60 Year Active Member of Dogs Victoria Award
1964! What is so important about 1964, I hear you ask?
Well, the majority of DV members might be too young to have any memory of 1964 – in fact, many of you may not have been born then, but there will be those amongst us who were already involved actively in the many facets of the KCC (Kennel Control Council) at that time. 2024 would then mark 60 years of active membership of Dogs Victoria – an amazing milestone. If you, or someone you know, fits the bill – please contact the Dogs Victoria office Janet Davidson on 9788 2512 or jdavidson@dogsvictoria.org.au, for a nomination form in order that the contribution of these long standing members can be acknowledged.
Outstanding Member contribution to Dogs Victoria Award
Throughout the years there are members who have been outstanding contributors towards the successful of Dogs Victoria who do not quite meet the Life Membership criteria. If you know of a member who should be considered for this awardl – please contact the Dogs Victoria office Janet Davidson on 9788 2512 or jdavidson@dogsvictoria.org.au for a nomination form.
Outstanding Canine Contribution Award
Throughout the year, dog events are conducted by affiliates, and dogs of all shapes and sizes compete. The outstanding canine contribution award is not necessarily targeted at those who compete in these events, but to the dogs who contribute outside the environment of competitions.
We think of the therapy dogs, assistance dogs, those visiting schools, nursing homes, and involved in all facets of interaction with the general public – so raising the profile of dogs throughout the community.
Crufts – the largest dog show in the world – runs a Friends for Life Award each year – highlighting amazing contribution by our canine companions.
If you know of a dog which should be considered for this award – please contact the Dogs Victoria office Janet Davidson on 9788 2512 or jdavidson@dogsvictoria.org.au for a nomination form.
Completed forms should be returned to the chief executive by 31 October 2024. Applications received after 31 October 2024 will not be considered until 2025. Life Membership Approval Panel
