President’s Report
Dog people are always willing to step in and help when needed. During the Easter Festival Shows at KCC Park, a committee member was injured and taken to hospital. Several exhibitors then stepped in to manage the office and continue the shows. Thank you for your assistance.
It was wonderful to see approximately 75 members attend our inaugural Anzac Day Dawn Service at KCC Park on Friday 25 April 2025. The service was held near the memorial to the dogs who have served Australia over the years. I would like to thank our CE, Kirk Edwards for this great initiative.
Following a great suggestion by one of our members, management committee has taken up the idea and will be holding a fundraising show for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. The show is to be held on 1 February 2026 at KCC Park. We will be asking judges and stewards to support the day by not charging a fee, and that the general members do so by entering. This is an opportunity to support a worthwhile cause and provide positive exposure for Dogs Victoria to the public. Make sure to put it in your show calendar. If you are willing to be involved in running the show please contact me directly.

Breed Spotlight - Leonberger
Brief History
The Leonberger is a giant dog breed, whose name derives from the town of Leonberg Germany where it originated. According to legend, the Leonberger was apparently bred as a “symbolic dog” that would mimic the lion in the town coat of arms. In the mid-19th Century, the breed was created by crossing the Newfoundland, St Bernard and the Pyrenean Mountain Dog. The first Leonberger imported into Australia arrived in 1989.
General Breed Description
The Leonberger is a family and companion dog, also very gentle with other animals, provided they are sensibly introduced. The Leonberger enjoys life with you, whatever you do and wherever you go. Although their size may be off-putting, their friendly nature precludes them from being a guard dog of note. They do well in a wide variety of activities including therapy work, water rescue and carting, although they truly excel in the couch Olympics! The Leonberger colour is lion gold, red, reddish brown, but may also come in a sandy colour and combinations in between, always with a black mask. Black tipping of the coat is allowed.
Coat and Care Requirements
The Leonberger is a double coated breed, requiring moderate grooming. A weekly brush and comb should suffice to maintain an adult coat and remove any knots, especially when they are dropping their coat, as they do moult heavily.
Suitability
Leonbergers are for people who consider their dog to be a part of the family and involve them in every aspect of their home life. Their size and presence have an impact on house and garden and they are not necessarily for the house proud. A sense of humour is advised. All dogs need socialising and training. Leonbergers can become bored with repetition, so training should be kept fun! The ongoing expense of a quality diet and vet fees should be considered when purchasing any giant breed of dog.
Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about the breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The Leonberger is generally a healthy breed, however health conditions do occur occasionally. These may include suffering from cancers, neuro-muscular disorders, eye conditions, heart problems and other issues.
Temperament
Leonbergers have a rare talent of combining natural exuberance and love of life with a calm, gentle disposition. They are known for their wonderful temperament even though being knocked over is a possibility because of their size. The Leonberger character is loyal, fearless, intelligent and confident.
Breed Spotlight - Leonberger

In Conclusion
Now you know a little more about this breed. If you have decided this is the dog for you and wish to investigate further, please contact the breed club or Dogs Victoria. They will be able to give you information about available puppies and also suggest dog events where you can see the breed and speak to breeders. In this way you will gain a better perspective of the breed and its needs. With any breed of dog, it is important to research and determine suitability for your lifestyle before committing to a puppy which will be a part of your family for many years to come.
Whilst many breeds are recommended for families, it is imperative that when children are with dogs they are supervised at all times. Basic obedience training is a vital part of dog ownership.
Dogs Victoria is about the responsible ownership of all dogs and in particular the preservation of pure breeds.

KCC PARK FACILITIES COMMITTEE
We have had another extremely busy month at KCC Park running multiple projects and working with multiple trades, all managed by our hard working small committee. The grass is now growing, requiring regular cutting.
Anzac Day Service – what a wonderful day of remembrance for our first Anzac Day Service at KCC Park. A new flag pole was installed for this event. Thank you everyone for making this event possible.
Area six drainage project – It is hoped that by the time the gazette goes to press, area six will be opened. With the lack of rain, the grass growth over the new trenches has been slow, and we were unable to open the area for training or general use until we had good ground cover as it was not safe. We thank everyone for their patience, but when we are reliant on mother nature, project completions can be delayed.
Wedge Road intersection – Further drainage works have been undertaken along Wedge Road, and it is hoped this will improve drainage from the highway, and also the Park.
On 9 April 2025, the street lights on the intersection were turned on providing a safer exit and entry to the grounds. The traffic lights are now operational. None of this work has been undertaken by Dogs Victoria contractors.
KCC Park sewerage connection – An application for the connection was submitted to South East Water on 25 January 2025.
We are still waiting for SE Water to contact our designer so this work can progress. The design and tender process is being managed by Craig Civil Design.
New portable event building – The portable 6x3m building on area one – “Kingsman Hut” can now be booked for events by members/affiliates. We are currently obtaining quotes to have the power connected. All the livery on the portable buildings has been removed.
Pavilion roof maintenance – A submission to replace all the tech screws and insulation the roof of the Boxhall pavilion has been sent to the Finance Committee for review.
Happy Bubbles Dog Bath – Has now been installed at the rear of the Classic Building and is now operational.
Memorial Garden – this is located next to the water tank on area one, is in plan to be rejuvenated. If any of our Dogs Victoria members are landscapers, please contact us. Other works – Always small maintenance tasks are undertaken, replacing the broken lock on the Classic Secretaries office is a good example. We also ground down the uneven edges on our footpaths. A reception counter has been built in the office.
Friends of the Park Rose and Protea shows – The schedule for our two shows on Friday 18th July has been published. We are also running our monster cart raffle with multiple prizes once again. If you have some super items to donate for our raffle, please contact me
Future member projects/bequests/donations – We are always happy to discuss any proposals with you to improve member amenities on the grounds. We also need more funds, if you can assist, please speak to us
We spend a lot of hours on the site for the betterment of our dogs and our members. Volunteers WELCOME! If you would like to come enjoy an hour or two helping at our monthly working bees, please contact me 0428 983 703 or email kccfacility@dogsvictoria.org.au

BULLA FACILITIES COMMITTEE
Committee members retiring – Peter Frost (Afghans) and Colin Hamilton have recently stepped down from our committee. Both were members since the inception of Bulla Facilities Committee. We wish to thank them and acknowledge their great contributions to this committee over many years. We welcome Dean Matthews and Lyn King in their place.
Dogs Victoria Buddies of Bulla Facebook group – We would love to welcome new members to this group. Please register at this site if you are available to help us, it’s also where we post dates and times of our working bees.
Grounds – Our regular Autumn turf program has continued again this year. Fertilizer was spread at the appropriate times along with some spot treatments of insecticide on areas of grass/grub damage. At times we had to resort to a bird scarer gun to move on large flocks of birds that were chasing the grubs and making the damage worse.
Multipurpose area – surface levelling activities continued throughout the last few months and damaged or absent corner post holders have been replaced. We are always happy to discuss any possible improvements for Bulla Exhibition Centre that you might propose. If you have any questions, queries or ideas, please contact the Bulla Facilities Committee at kfall1465@gmail.com

OTEC NOTES
Everything is back into full swing.
FOOs autumn session was amazing. Any rain was over before we started. The only issues were that with area six under restoration we were split between areas one and two where one of the lights didn’t work.
The team was so good - set up and pull down went like clockwork, led by Ian Woollard, and helped by Geoff Brown, Lisa Sinclair, Dee Moore et al.
Our trainers: Lea Cogley, Clare Hodges, Gaye Todd, Julie Urie, Eddie Howden, Gordon Parsons, Marta McKenzie, Lisa Sinclair, Amy Butler and Dearne Jackson were wonderful as usual.
Regular stewards included Kerrie from the Library, Cheryl Smith, Cristine Begbie and Geoff Brown. Not forgetting Pam Brown who helped with check in and Chris Warren who acted as my personal chauffeur when I was checking on what was happening with the rings on area one.
Special thanks to the people who came to our rescue when Ian was suddenly unable to attend, especially to Anne Mann who brought Mike along. Thank you all.
The Croydon trial was a great success. It was Gordon Parsons last judging appointment. Gordon has been a huge influence on obedience in Victoria. He came from England, where he was a judge within a completely different system. He had to start from the bottom here. He started with a very good German Shepherd, went to Border Collies and now has a very good Australian Shepherd. From the beginning, Gordon loved UDX, he took his dog through to the title and achieved 10 passes altogether. Now he is busy working on his beautiful Australian Shepherd, who has had some very good scores so far. Gordon has also been very helpful with OTEC judges training and assessment.
Another very helpful person is Dawn Ayton who was recently elected to the Management Committee where she will again be a valuable advocate for our performance sports. Congratulations Dawn.
Our Victorian Judges are in high demand. Dawn Ayton and Ross Carlson were invited to judge at the Sydney Royal Easter Show this year for the second time.
Then Kim Houlden was invited to judge at the Obedience and Rally National in Sydney.
By all accounts, they were very well received.
Not aware of any Victorian triallers at the Sydney Royal, but our friends did well in the open class at the National. Alan assisted by Anthony Lockett came second in open.
An old friend originally from Canberra, now in NSW, Ian Forster, blitzed the field with a score of 200 and best in trial with his new dog, Sam, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Unfortunately, obedience day at the National was pouring with rain.
The German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria breed show and trial was a great success. A highlight was Andrew Macdonald and his dog Hillmagic Laranga Bono (AI) CDX TD put in a wonderful round in open to gain a well deserved 200 points. This team also won best in trial and had similar results at the March Championship Show. This team is a joy to watch.
The OTEC Easter Trials were well received and lots of passes and titles were gained.
The Tracking Club of Victoria held the first tracking trial for the year, a test one only trial.
It also held the first track and search trial for the year beginning on Anzac Day. Unfortunately, there was a late notice that it was not to start until 1pm on that day. Everyone reorganised and the rest of the trial ran smoothly with many passes and titles gained.
A highlight of ANZAC Day was the Dawn Service, the first held at KCC Park. Our friend Trevor Pillinger, decked out in his medals was asked to raise the flag. Lots of people attended, along with dogs of various breeds. Janet Davidson handed out Poppies, a Dawn Service to remember.
Last but not least, we have a new tracking judge. Miro Strmecki. We wish him all the best for his future judging career.
Dawn Howard | OTEC Member
SCENT WORK NOTES
The Scent Work Committee extends a very warm welcome to all the “newbies” commencing their novice trialing this year. It is great to see such a variety of dog breeds coming into scent work, confirming that all dogs can do it. We strongly recommend that those starting out in scent work offer to volunteer at some scent work trials to get an idea of how our trials are run – it can be quite daunting for a beginner. We also congratulate and welcome the affiliation of the new K9 Scent Club which has attracted a very large membership and already has at least five trials planned throughout the year.
We commenced the year with a few smaller, twilight trials over the warmer months (Hastings & Scent Work Committee), then five trials in March (Southern Obedience, Lagotto Club, K9 Scent Club & Bendigo) and five trials in April (Warragul, Gippsland, Berwick, Australian Shepherd Club and the Bearded Collie Club).
Over the Easter weekend, the Berwick Obedience Dog Club ran a double masters and (inaugural) ultimate trial at Traralgon. The new class, ultimate, which was introduced at the last Rule Review, is very complex and challenging task designed to test the dog’s resilience. Ultimate combines all elements (containers, interior, exterior & vehicles) in a much larger area, both indoors and outdoors.
Any or all four target odours (birch, anise, clove, cypress) can be used, with between 3 or 10 hides in the search areas, to be found within a time limit of 7 to 15 minutes. Hides can be high (150cm), buried (5cm), or inaccessible and there will be 4 to 6 distractors which can be food, nonfood, mimic or human. To be eligible to compete at ultimate level, a dog must have either gained Scent Work Masters title or at least two elements titles. We now have at least 14 teams eligible to compete in ultimate so it now worth running ultimate trials.
Congratulations once again to Talia Duell and her beautiful and talented German Shorthaired Pointer, Solly aka T Ch Reload Walk the Line SWM, SWC, SWV, SWI, SWX, TSD NRA (pictured) –the first team to pass Ultimate in Victoria. Solly needs another four ultimate passes to become a Scent Work Champion and with the way Solly and Talia work together, that won’t be too far away.
The Anzac weekend was another very busy time in scent work with several trials in Victoria, and larger trials held in SA and ACT which quite a few of our members attended. Our usual State of Origin Challenge in ACT was won by the Victoria team but in SA we were not quite so successful. The teams that visited each State brought home quite a few passes and titles though.
(pictured) who achieved the final Master Interior pass to gain the SWM (Scent Work Masters) title our third SWM in Victoria. There are now a few dogs just wanting the final element title for the SWM.
The Scent Work Committee has been very busy locating and inspecting various venues for our State Scent Work Trial. We may need to change the date depending on our choice of venue. It is very important that, when considering a potential venue, we check for dog friendly accommodation, parking and accessible toilets, and particularly line of sight issues. We have seen some really great venues but they lacks some of those facilities. We will endeavour to decide on a venue and an appropriate date within the next few weeks.

SLED SPORTS NOTES
The sled sports are now in full swing, with training days having already been conducted and plenty of events coming up over the next few months.
The American Staffordshire Terrier and Alaskan Malamute Clubs have conducted weight pull training days, with the ASTCV getting a good turnout of 10 people at their last training session. The Alaskan Malamute Club training day was less well attended, perhaps due to being held on a long weekend and up against a sprint dog event. Sledding training weekends have been held by the Siberian Husky Club and the Northern Victorian Sled Dog Club and were well attended by both experienced mushers and newcomers to the sport.
The Alaskan Malamute Club has held their introduction to sledding and sled sports activities day, which provides those with no experience in any of the sled sports a chance to find out what’s involved, check out the equipment required and have a go with their dogs.
We thank all the clubs for offering these training events, as they provide a valuable entry point for people to try out the sled sports with their dogs in a relaxed, non-competitive and supportive environment, without having to dive straight into a full scale event which can be a bit daunting.
As mentioned in previous issues, there are sled sports events on most weekends from now until mid October, providing members with plenty of opportunities to gain passes towards the many sled sports titles now on offer.
If you are interested, check out the Facebook pages for the sled sports as well as Show Manager and Easy Dogs for entry details, particularly for backpacking events which have limited places and tend to fill up quickly.
If you have any questions about sled sports events, titles, equipment requirements, training etc. please don’t hesitate to contact the affiliates conducting the events or the Sled Sports Committee: vicsledsports@gmail.com

RAFT NOTES
A Young Handler’s Journey: Arlo and His Springer Spaniel ‘Major’
Arlo’s journey began somewhat unpromisingly. Around the age of four and a half, during a family outing to the beach, Arlo had an unsettling encounter with an uncontrolled, albeit non-aggressive, dog. The interaction left a significant impression, resulting in a pronounced fear that caused him to actively avoid dogs for the subsequent few years.
By the time Arlo was six, the family, prompted partly by his older sister’s long standing desire for a canine companion, decided the time was right to introduce a dog into their home. After careful consideration and successfully persuading Arlo, they selected the English Springer Spaniel breed. They sourced their first puppy, Sheriff, from a Dogs Victoria breeder with whom they established a good rapport. As an outdoors loving child, Arlo soon discovered the enjoyment of adventures with Sheriff, and his initial apprehension began to recede, replaced by an appreciation for their new family member.
Maintaining contact with their breeder proved pivotal. It served as their introduction to the world of gundog training and the inherent working abilities of the breed. Arlo was particularly fascinated by the concept of watching a dog work to its breeding purpose. Consequently, the family began spending more time with the breeder, learning the fundamentals of handling and hunting over their spaniel.
Arlo’s positive disposition and commendable work ethic ensured he was readily accepted within the gundog fraternity. He quickly became a valued helper on training days, assisting with setting up and operating equipment, and keenly observing the dogs at work.
At the age of nine, a second Springer Spaniel entered their lives. Arlo formed an immediate and strong connection with this puppy, naming him Major and effectively claiming him as his own. This marked the beginning of a close partnership. Arlo’s confidence grew steadily through his work with Major. While early handling experiences involved some natural uncertainty about his ability and Major’s responsiveness in the field, the extensive time they have since spent training together has forged a remarkable understanding between them.
They are now a familiar sight at various training days, with Arlo diligently working Major or attentively observing other handlers and their dogs. He demonstrates a keen capacity for learning through observation and is always willing to assist, whether operating a thrower or simply absorbing the activities around him.
His greatest enthusiasm, however, lies in participating in actual hunts, where he spends considerable hours working Major in a practical setting. His long term aspiration was to handle Major himself in a field trial. To this end, Arlo dedicated himself to a rigorous training schedule, working with Major at least three evenings a week. He also gained valuable experience handling Major for other hunters, a clear indicator of the trust established between dog and handler.
With significant encouragement from members of the community who recognised the potential of the partnership, Arlo entered Major into the Field Trial hosted by the Cocker Spaniel Club of Victoria at the end of April. Despite experiencing natural pre-event anxiety the day before, having felt reasonably confident in the preceding week, he successfully brought himself and Major to the starting line. There, he initiated their run with the familiar command: “Hunt ‘em up!”
He hunted his dog with style and skill beyond his years. Major worked beautifully and had a nice hard contact flush which produced a covey of five quail. Major remained steady to the flush, and made easy work of the subsequent retrieve to fill his card.
Arlo’s progression in a relatively short period is considerable, moving from a child initially fearful of dogs to a young handler competing successfully in a field trial. His journey demonstrates the positive impact of dedication, a love for dogs and the outdoors, and the invaluable support and encouragement offered by the gundog community.
We congratulate Arlo and Major on reaching this milestone – we suspect there are plenty more “Hunt ‘em ups” in their future! Keep an eye out for this pair; they’re going places.

HERDING NOTES - OUTSTANDING HERDING DOGS
This month we are returning to finding out about the people who judge our herding tests and trials. Without our wonderful judges, our handler and dog teams could not test their abilities in the sport. The judge we are interviewing is me!
1. When and why did you become a Dogs Australia judge? Are you a judge in any other disciplines or for other organisations? I undertook the beginning of the process to becoming a judge several years ago. I saw it as a way of giving back to the sport that I had been enjoying since 2016. Currently I am a test judge, the first ladder in the judging scheme. Eventually I would like to become a trial judge. I am not a judge of any other discipline.
2. What are you looking for in a run at the level you judge? I would like to see the handler, dog and sheep moving smoothly around the course. To achieve this the handler and dog need to be working as a team.
3. Have you competed and are you still competing with your dogs in herding? Under which organisations? Dogs Australia etc.. Any other disciplines? Yes I have and am still competing in Dogs Australia herding. With my first dog, Alfie, we achieved the Herding Started A Course Sheep title. His premature death meant we weren’t able to go any further. I only compete in Dogs Australia disciplines. I also compete in obedience and am beginning to compete in agility.
4. Do you live in a city or on property? If so what do you grow and/or produce there? I live in the city. A property with a few sheep to practise our herding would be wonderful but isn’t going to happen at this stage in my life.
5. How did you become interested in herding? How long have you been herding? I initially began herding thinking I would just go to lessons once a month. I found that I enjoyed it so much that I started going every week to training and eight years later I am still there.
6. What breeds of dogs have you worked with? Which do you prefer the most? Why? I have mainly worked with Australian Shepherds in the herding field. Apart from a brief stint working an Australian Kelpie for a few months, Australian Shepherds are my go to dog. I find that they want to work with their owner rather than just wanting to work sheep. Of course, we do want them to want to work sheep but together. Once the handler is able to communicate what they want from the dog, the work becomes magic.
7. Tell us about the dogs you are currently herding with. What level are you competing at? The two Australian Shepherds that I am working with are Cody, a nearly eight year old, who has his herding started masters sheep title and Ollie, a six year old, with his pre trial test.
7. What has been your proudest moment working/ competing with dogs? Tell us about it. My proudest moment was when Cody and I were able to achieve the started masters title. This requires the team to achieve eight scores of 90 and above in each run at the level. Our runs were magic with the sheep walking quietly with Cody and I through all of the obstacles on the course. I missed the celebration of achieving the title at trial due to thinking we only had seven high scores!
8. What is the best piece of training advice that you have been given? “No more one more time.” If you have achieved the correct piece in your training, stop.
9. When you aren’t herding what else do you like to do? I like to spend time with my family.

FROM THE VET - GLAUCOMA IN DOGS
What is Glaucoma?
It is a disease of the eye where the pressure within the eye is increased.
Aqueous humor is produced by the structure known as the ciliary body within the eye.
This aqueous humor contains oxygen and nutrients that are used by the structures within the eye the ciliary body constantly produces aqueous humor and the excess fluid is constantly drained from the eye between the cornea and the iris. This area is called the iridocorneal angle the filtration angle or the drainage angle.
As long as the production and absorption or drainage of aqueous humor is equal the intraocular pressure remains constant.
How is Glaucoma Caused?
It is caused by inadequate drainage of aqueous fluid. This can be primary or secondary issue.
In the case of Primary Glaucoma the lack of drainage is because of an inherited anatomical abnormalities in the drainage angle.
In the case of Secondary Glaucoma results in increased intraocular pressure due to disease or injury to the eye. Such causes include:
(i) Uveitis (inflammation of the interior of the eye) or severe intraocular infections, resulting in debris and scar tissue blocking the drainage angle.
(ii) Anterior dislocation of lens The lens falls forward and physically blocks the drainage angle or pupil so that fluid is trapped behind the dislocated lens.
(iii) Lens Damage Lens proteins leaking into the eye because of a raptured lens can cause an inflammatory reaction resulting in swelling and blockage of the drainage angle.
(iv) Tumors can cause physical blockage of the iridocorneal angle.
(v) Bleeding Inside The Eye In the case where blood clot forms and blocks the drainage of the aqueous humor.
It should be noted that glaucoma is more commonly seen in the following breeds:
Akita, Cocker Spaniel, American Cocker Spaniel, Poodle, Alaskan Malamute, Dalmatian, Samoyed, English Springer Spaniel, Bassett Hound, Flat Coated Retriever, Miniature Pinscher, Great Dane, Beagle, Shar Pei, Shih Tzu, Boston Terrier, Siberian Husky, Bouvier des Flandres, Fox Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Chow Chow, Wire-Haired Fox Terrier, Italian Greyhound, Norwegian Elkhound, Giant Schnauzer, Greyhound, Smooth Haired Fox Terrier, Welsh Springer Spaniel, Miniature Schnauzer.
When the intraocular pressure is increased it causes damage or degenerative changes to occur in the retina and the optic nerve. The retina is located at the back of the eye where it is the innermost lining layer of the eyeball. It is responsible for reverting images into nerve signals. These are then carried by the optic nerve to the brain where it produces vision.
What Signs do Affected Dogs Show?
The classical signs are as follows
(i) Swelling bulging of the eye with the white part of the eye larger looking red
(ii) A painful eye
(iii) The cornea may become cloudy or bluish
(iv) A watery discharge from the eye
(v) Blindness
The signs occur suddenly with acute glaucoma but more slowly in the case of chronic glaucoma.
When these signs are present glaucoma can be confirmed by using a tonometer to measure the eyes intraocular pressures.
How is Glaucoma Treated?
The most important thing is to reduce the intraocular pressure as quickly as possible in order to reduce the risk of irreversible damage to the eye hence blindness.
This is usually achieved using medications that reduce fluid production and promote drainage from the drainage angle of the eye. In more serve cases medical treatment combined with surgery is required to reduce the intraocular pressure. Unfortunately, in some cases that do not respond to treatment or where blindness has developed removal of the eye maybe required to relieve the pain associated with the glaucoma.
What is The Prognosis?
This depends often on the underlying cause of the glaucoma. In the long term it should be expected that constant medical treatment will be required to keep the condition under control.

Dingo The Story of an Outlaw
Author: Henry G Lamond
Novel version of the series that was published, in The Australasian in the 1950s. The story follows the life and ways of a young Dingo that becomes a devastating menace to the Queensland pastoral communities.
“He rose and yawned. Placed his two front paws well before him; leaned back slowly till his chest almost touched the ground, his tail arched tight, his sinews playing under the skin, every nerve taut and tested as he arched his neck and lowered his nose to his

paws. He released the tension, and like a bit of springing elastic regained his poise. Then he stretched one hind leg behind him, revelling in the feeling of power his display of muscular effort gave him. Lowering it to its place, he stretched the other hind leg. His physical jerks concluded, he wandered aimlessly.”
Lamond has lovely prose and the story moves rapidly, no doubt due to the original serial format of the story. It is an adventure story typical of the 1950s, consequently, parents should review the book before deciding to hand it over to young readers today. White Ears leads a charmed but challenged life. The story introduced me to numerable Queensland flora species I was unaware of. The descriptions of ‘dog’ are strikingly familiar and enjoyable to read. The death scenes seem very accurate and usually without excessive gruesome detail demonstrating Lamond’s good use of language. There are a few things, turns of phrase, that are repeated through the narrative, but not to the extent of condemning the book.
The book is a great reflection of life in rural Australia in the 1940-1950s, describes dogs well, explains the problems of dingos to sheep and other farmers, so is a valuable record of that part of our country’s history.
It is easy to read. The information seems accurate, Lamond says “White Ears does not do a thing which I have not known a dingo to do”.

PD Celebrates
the Role Dogs Play in Our Lives
Dogs are the first animals ever to have been domesticated by humans, and it shows in our longstanding friendship. Not only are dogs our best friends and beloved family members, but they’ve helped pave the way to a happier and more prosperous society.
Throughout co-evolution, our canine companions have supported and shaped our human lives for the better. Today, PD celebrates their involvement in sports and conformation and their capacity as working dogs and as service dogs.
Conformation
Dog shows are a momentous way to showcase our pedigree pups and are some of the most popular competitive dog events.
Conformation events help us celebrate the structure, movement, and temperament of pedigree dogs, showcasing the results of pedigree dog breeding. PD would like to congratulate the breeders, handlers and conformation judges for their expertise.
Dog sports
Dog sports provide an opportunity to bond with our dogs through a combination of teamwork, communication, and having a shared goal. Activities like agility, flyball, obedience, and dock diving are great ways to focus on our dogs while helping provide them with physical and mental stimulation.
Working dogs
Search and rescue dogs help locate missing people in disasters, while herding and livestock dogs support farmers in managing their animals.
In therapy and emotional support roles, dogs provide comfort and connection to those in need. Whether serving on the frontline with law enforcement or quietly supporting in homes, working dogs are true partners in improving lives every day.
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs, also known as service dogs, are highly trained to help people with disabilities live more independently. They perform essential tasks like opening doors, retrieving items, and providing emotional support.
There are several types, including guide dogs, hearing dogs, psychiatric (PTSD) dogs, autism assistance dogs, and physical disability assistance dogs. These dogs undergo around two years of intensive training and must pass a Public Access Test to be accredited.
Once qualified, they have legal access to public spaces. assistance dogs not only help with daily tasks but also improve confidence, safety, and quality of life for their handlers.
Giving them the protection they deserve
In celebration of the many ways our dogs provide us comfort, support, protection and success, let’s keep those paws protected with pet insurance. Explore a range of plans for a selection of accident, illness and dental cover.

First Aid for Dogs
All dog owners need to know a little animal first aid. Whether it is for a time when your own pet gets injured or is unwell, or if you see an injured animal when you are out and about.
First Aid Principles
First aid principles for animals are really no different to those for human first aid, so if you have ever done a human first aid course, you can probably apply a lot of the theory to animals.
The first rule of First Aid is to ‘do no harm’ – don’t let your actions make things worse. In most cases, this means transferring the animal to proper veterinary care as soon as possible or seeking proper veterinary advice. This is not the time for ‘Dr Google’.
Injured and unwell animals should be checked by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
First aid is not a substitute for proper veterinary care. Early veterinary intervention should always be the priority.
Safety First!
Following on from the human first aid principles, the next step is to check for danger before rushing in to help.
In any emergency situation, remaining as calm as possible is key. We all want to jump in to help an injured animal (probably more so than an injured person!), but we need to make sure that we are not putting ourselves into danger to do so.
For example, if an animal has been hit by a vehicle, is injured and on the road or in a place that presents danger from traffic, you need to make sure it is safe before rushing in to help.
If there has been a dog fight, you need to be careful that you do not get bitten trying to break the fight up, and make sure the dogs are properly separated so there is no chance of things starting up again.
Injured animals are often scared and frightened and even the sweetest, gentlest pet may behave in a way we don’t expect to protect themselves from further pain.
You need to move slowly and carefully and manage your own safety by using appropriate restraints such as leashes and muzzles if needed.
Remember injured animals may panic, try to escape, lash out or even bite when you go to handle them so be super cautious. Be very aware of where you position yourself and keep an eye on what is happening around you as you approach or handle the injured animal.
Sometimes covering the animal’s head/eyes with a blanket or towel can help reduce stress and help calm the animal.
If you need a muzzle, but don’t have one handy – you can fashion one with a leash or some elastic bandage.
How serious is it?
You will need to make a quick assessment of the seriousness of the injury or illness – does the animal need urgent veterinary attention? If you are not sure, call your local vet clinic for advice.
Injuries that involve ears and eyes, or injuries to pregnant females, or newborn puppies may be more serious that you expect.
Dog fight wounds may not look serious on the surface but can hide significant damage to underlying tissues and are very prone to serious infection.
Dogs Victoria Fact Sheet Health & Wellbeing
First Aid for Dogs
You should then decide whether or not you are going to immediately transport the animal to the vets, and if you are then ring ahead to let them know you are coming. If you are not sure, then you should consult your veterinarian for advice.
Having the contact details of the local vet as well as the local after-hours clinic or emergency centre displayed in a prominent place at home, or stored in your phone is very handy in a situation like this.
In most cases, the local veterinarian will not be too far away, so getting the animal safely in the car and to the vet should be your number one priority.
Spending a lot of time bandaging, splinting, or dressing an injury is usually a waste of time as the vet will simply remove all of your handy work on arrival, and the animal will have undergone unnecessary pain and stress, and treatment will have been delayed.
That is not to say that keeping a wound clean, keeping a lame leg still, or using pressure to stop bleeding should not be done, but be very conscious about delaying proper veterinary treatment.
Only a minor injury?
If the injury is not a serious one – you may choose to apply some simple first aid measures yourself. If there is a small wound, you can flush it and then apply a disinfectant such as BetadineTM to the area.
Saline solution (salty water) is safest for flushing and cleaning wounds as it does not sting and is safe if the animal decides to lick the area.
Be very careful about using anything on an animal’s skin that would be toxic if put in their mouth as animals are naturally going to lick at an injury, especially things like tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil or Dettol which can be toxic if ingested.
You will still need to document the injury, and any treatment given, and the animal will need to be monitored closely to ensure infection or other complications do not develop.
Moving an Injured Animal
If you need to transport an injured animal, the aim is to minimise the pain and distress caused by moving injured body parts.
Bring your vehicle as close as possible to the injured animal, and if possible, have someone to help you. Fitting a collar and leash, and even a muzzle, will aid in control and help minimise unnecessary movement. It will also help with restraining the animal in the vehicle – especially in unfamiliar cars, or where your normal car restraints are not available.
If you are dealing with a dog that cannot walk, you may have to gently move it onto a blanket or towel, then use the blanket or towel like a stretcher. Try to move carefully so that you don’t make any injuries worse.
Pro Tip – It is a great idea to teach your dog to wear a muzzle – even if they never need to.
By introducing a muzzle in a positive way, and gradually teaching your dog to accept a muzzle, can both reduce their stress if they need to wear one, and can make putting one on in an emergency much safer.

First Aid for Dogs
Broken Bones
If your dog is suddenly very lame, or one of its legs does not look right, there could be damage to the bones or ligaments. These injuries usually need an x-ray assessment, so getting the dog to the vet is critical.
Try to minimise the movement of the injured area as movement can be very painful and can lead to further damage of the surrounding tissues. Remember to keep yourself safe, and handle the animal carefully.
Cuts, Lacerations and Puncture Wounds
Some superficial wounds can be managed at home with gentle cleaning and application of a disinfectant such as BetadineTM. However, if the damage looks to be deeper, or the wound is very open, then it will most likely need veterinary assessment and treatment.
Infection can easily cause more problems than the original wound, so early intervention is critical. There is a window of a few hours where early treatment can mean that infection does not have an opportunity to take hold and inflammation is minimised.
If your pet has been in a fight, it’s very important you seek veterinary care immediately because bite wounds are highly likely to become infected, and there is often significant damage to underlying tissues that is not visible from the surface.
Bites and Stings – Allergic Reactions
If your pet suddenly develops swelling of their face, including their muzzle or around their eyes, and/or rashes or bumps (hives) on their body (with or without being very itchy) they may be having an allergic reaction.
Some pets will experience such reactions to insect bites or stings, to new food exposures, or to substances in their environment.
In most cases, allergic reactions are not life threatening, however the pain and discomfort can be significant. Dogs often cause secondary damage trying to rub, bite or lick at irritated areas so a visit to the vet for treatment to reduce the irritation and swelling is advised.
Vomiting and Diarrhoea
Dogs, especially young puppies, are notorious for chewing on and eating just about anything! In most cases, the high-acid environment in their gut deals with the items they scavenge.
Sometimes, though, the body deals with unwanted items by expelling them from the gut – either by vomiting or moving them through the bowel quickly resulting in diarrhoea.
Of course, there are a LOT of different reasons why a dog may vomit or have loose stools – some more sinister than others. There is a very big difference between ‘I ate something that upset my tummy’ and viral gastroenteritis or a bowel obstruction caused by a foreign body.
If your dog has an upset stomach, here is a rough guide:
» If you have seen your dog eating something it should not have, or suspect it has swallowed something dangerous, you should immediately consult your veterinarian.
» If the dog looks unwell, is lethargic, or if there is blood visible in the poop or vomit – you should immediately consult a veterinarian.
» If the dog is otherwise bright and happy, a single vomit or bout of loose poop may not be a concern. However, you will need to watch closely to check that things don’t change. Make sure the dog is drinking, and don’t offer any food for 6-8 hours.
If they continue to vomit, or have a number of bouts of diarrhoea in this time, you should consult a veterinarian.
If they are acting normally, and there is no recurrence you can then try a small amount of very plain food (such as boiled chicken) as a first meal and continue to monitor their progress over the next few days.
First Aid for Dogs
Poisons
Pets can accidentally ingest toxic substances such as household cleaners, medications, plants, or human foods that are not suitable for animals.
Depending on the type of poison, the symptoms can vary and might include vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, seizures, or lethargy.
If you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic substance or poison, contact your vet for advice. I
n some cases, your vet may be able to give your pet medication to make them vomit, but in some cases inducing vomiting is not recommended as the poison can cause more damage.
Medications
Never give your pets medication without consulting your vet first, even if they have had that medication before.
Medication that has been prescribed for another animal, or that has been ‘left over’ from a previous treatment should not be used unless specifically approved and the correct dosage calculated by your vet.
Where a veterinarian has prescribed medication, you need to complete the course fully, even if your pet ‘looks better’.
First Aid Kit for Dogs
As a pet owner, it is a good idea to be prepared. A basic pet first aid kit can be super helpful in an emergency.
Your veterinarian will be able to suggest items for your first aid kit and will be able to show you some simple first aid techniques that you can apply if needed.
A basic first aid kit should contain gloves, saline solution, iodine antiseptic, some gauze swabs, non-adhesive dressings and bandages along with scissors and tweezers.
Having a sturdy blanket or strong towel in the boot of your car can also be a great idea.
Pet First Aid Training Courses
If you are looking to up your skill level, there are a number of pet first aid courses available in Melbourne through organisations such as Red Cross and RSPCA.
Your local vet clinic may also offer classes.
This service is free during regular hours, but they do charge a fee for out-of-hours calls.
Their website - animalpoisons.com.au offers some excellent advice for pet owners who are concerned their pet has been exposed to a poison or toxic substance.
Dogs Victoria Fact Sheet Training & Behaviour
Jumping Up On People
Although we all love a bit of enthusiasm in a greeting, dogs that jump all over people uninvited can become a bit of a nuisance.
It might be fine on a sunny afternoon when you get home from a tough day at work and may seem super cute in a tiny puppy. Still, it loses its appeal when the dog is a hefty 40kg adult, or when the dog has muddy paws, and you are dressed to go out.
Dogs that routinely jump up on their family or visitors can also potentially cause injury. Sharp claws can scratch or tear grandma’s fragile skin or accidentally scratch the face of a toddler. If the dog catches the person off-balance, it could potentially lead to a fall.
Dogs that are over-enthusiastic with their greetings can also frighten people who are not used to dogs or who have had a bad experience in the past; this is especially true of larger breeds of dog.
So why do dogs to jump up on people?
Jumping up to greet people is thought to have its origins from an innate behaviour displayed by very young puppies to solicit food from their mother. The puppies jump up to lick the corners of their mother’s mouth, which triggers a regurgitation response, delivering semi-digested food that the puppies can then eat. Quite simply, this behaviour is ‘hard-wired’ in all dog breeds and then reinforced very early with food.
Licking at the faces of other dogs often continues into later life as a form of appeasement greeting, especially when young puppies are meeting older dogs. Because human faces are well off the ground, there is a theory that jumping up at a human is the dog’s way of trying to get closer to our face to perform this greeting.
Unfortunately, we humans often encourage and reinforce this behaviour unintentionally. When puppies are small and cute, or when dogs are new to a household, we often let them jump up on us and reach down and give them a pat or cuddle (or pick them up) when they do this.
From the dog’s point of view, they get lots of attention and interaction when they jump up (the greeting behaviour of jumping up is reinforced repeatedly with pats, games and attention) so they learn that this is a behaviour that ‘works’.
But I am not reinforcing the dog for jumping up – I tell him off!
A lot of old-school training techniques suggested that giving the dog a verbal ‘correction’, or physically pushing the dog down was the way to stop this behaviour.
It is not uncommon to see people try to push the jumping dog down with their hands, lifting their knee, or yelling and making a lot of noise to try to stop this behaviour.
The problem with these options is the dog may actually see it as a type of game – I jump up, and you push me down – lots of fun! They still have your 100% attention, and you are still interacting with them, so they are getting reinforced for a behaviour that you really don’t want.
There is also the risk of the dog getting hurt or injured if it gets tipped off balance as it is pushed away.
Coaching polite greetings
Just like young children, we need to teach our dogs what we DO want them to do. Simply telling them ‘No’ doesn’t do anything to teach them the correct response.
You cannot just expect that your puppy or dog will comprehend that YOU might like the occasional jump up, super enthusiastic greeting, but that they can’t do it with other family members, elderly people, people in the street, young children or when they have muddy feet.
You need to think about what your preferred greeting behaviour actually is and then work to reinforce the dog heavily for doing that.
For most people, their preferred greeting is for the dog to sit in front of them, but you may choose ‘four feet on the floor’ as an acceptable position if you have a dog that finds sitting difficult (such as some of the larger sighthounds).
Then we need to make it very clear to the dog, over repeated learning events, that he will be reinforced with treats, toys, pats and interactions when he is in the ‘greeting position’, and he will get none of this if he is not.
Dogs Victoria Fact Sheet Training & Behaviour
Jumping Up on People
At the very start of coaching polite greeting behaviours, you should try to set you and your dog up for success.
Pick a time when the dog is not super excited (so not when you or the kids first come home), and things are relatively calm and arm yourself with some of your dog’s favourite treats and a toy.
Ideally, start with your dog on a leash and ask another family member to stand still and hold onto the leash as you do some training. The person holding the leash is not to do anything – no jerking or pulling on the leash and they do not need to say anything. They are simply there to stop the dog from following you.
The plan is for you to approach the dog and greet it – ‘Hello Bella/Spot’. If the dog goes to jump up, you simply turn and walk away – no yelling, no eye contact, no pushing or pulling – just walk away.
The fact that you walk away provides a ‘consequence’ for the dog – if you jump up, I will move away, and you don’t get the chance to interact.
Repeat this ‘approach and greet’ until the dog sits (or just stands there and does not jump up at you), and then immediately reward the dog with a treat, pat or cuddle. Repeat a few times, then end the session with a short game or something else the dog values.
Like all new behaviours that you would like your pet to master, you will need to practise regularly. Try to take time out each day to coach the behaviours you want, and try hard to reinforce the ones you don’t.
The more consistent you are, and the more times the dog is reinforced for the correct behaviour, the sooner the dog will offer the four on the floor response or a sit.
Training Tip !
To help you fit the training sessions into everyday life, stash some treats at the places you are likely to greet your dog, such as the front or back door or the side gate. That way, if they offer the desired behaviour outside of a planned training session, you can still reinforce them.
Once your dog masters ‘Level 1 of Human Greeting Behaviour’, you can then start to practise this same routine with a variety of people, all of whom do the same thing. Ask friends and family to help you. y
You will also have to practise the greeting behaviour in different locations - on your walks, outside the shops, at the park, and anywhere else your dog may greet people.
If everyone that the dog greets does the same thing, your dog will soon start to learn that there are never any pats or attention unless all four feet are on the ground.
If your dog does greet someone politely without being ‘set up’ to do so, make sure that you reward the dog yourself. Just make sure you remember to carry some treats the dog really likes when out on your walks – pack them with your leash and poo bags, so you don’t forget to take them!
If you realise someone about to greet the dog when you are out and about, you can then either hand the person one of your treats and ask them to give it to the dog when he does the right thing, or reward the dog yourself.

Jumping Up on People
Progress takes time
Having a dog that is super reliable when greeting people will take time and patience. There will be scenarios that your dog masters very quickly, and others that may be a bit harder because the dog will be super excited and less able to control their emotions.
To start with, your dog may not be able to contain their excitement when you first come home. Sometimes they need to settle a little before they can muster the emotional control to be able to achieve a polite greeting.
If this is the case, you can simply delay greeting your dog for the first 10 minutes or so after you come home. When your pet seems to settle a little, then go out and work on your greeting behaviour.
If doorways are a place that you seem to have trouble – as you go out into the backyard or as you come through the gate - practise the same routine here.
Open the gate or door, if the dog goes to jump up, gently shut the door and take a few steps away. Then open it again, close it, open it, close it, until the dog offers ‘four on the floor’ or a sit. Then you can quickly reward the dog with a treat, and then go outside and give your pet all the cuddles and pats you want.
For dogs who like to play, another option is to keep a few toys or a ball near the gate or back door, and immediately throw one as you come through into the yard. The dog will learn to expect the toy and will focus on chasing after it rather than ‘mugging’ you.
But what if I WANT my dog to jump up and greet me?
This is fine – we all love an excited greeting some of the time!
The key is to help your dog get it right by having an, ‘it’s OK to jump up now’ cue. That way, you can enjoy this type of interaction, without the dog thinking it is appropriate all of the time.

ANKC LTD REGULATIONS Part 6 Section 8 Breeding
8.3 All bitches eight years of age and over at the time of a mating must have a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health at the time of breeding. This certificate must be presented at the time of registration of the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as being within three months prior to the mating. (Added BOD 10/11)

Any breach of this regulation will constitute an offence by the member/ members who are the owners of the sire and dam of the litter. The progeny resulting from such a breach will be registered on the Limited Register and endorsed ‘never to be upgraded’ and any further penalties may be determined by the member’s member body. (Added 10/10, 6.7) (Amended EAP 07/11) (Amended 10/14, 7.5.6)

b. Desired outcomes for the mating;
c. When the intended mating is likely to occur.
