PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I

am delighted to share our collective successes and celebrate the remarkable achievements of our manufacturing sector as we embrace Manufacturers’ Month. The past year has demonstrated the strength, resilience, and growth potential of the Jamaican manufacturing industry. Our sector has made significant strides, positively contributing to the overall expansion of the Jamaican economy. We have witnessed successful initial public offerings within the manufacturing domain, and the Manufacturing and Distribution Index has consistently proven to be a robust performer on the Jamaica Stock Exchange. These achievements reflect the confidence investors and stakeholders have in our industry.

Sydney Thwaites President | JMEA

Our member companies have displayed an unwavering commitment to progress. Through new investments in the form of acquisitions, both at home and in the wider Caribbean region, as well as ambitious expansion projects, we are driving growth, innovation, and efficiency. These initiatives not only strengthen our individual organizations but collectively bolster our industry’s influence.

As we move forward, we firmly believe in the mantra of “Manufacturing Locally” and “Exporting Globally.” This approach is not just a pathway to success for our manufacturers, but it is also the key to closing the trade gap and elevating the standard of living for all Jamaicans. By embracing this strategy, we can secure a brighter and more prosperous future for our nation. The Jamaican Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) stands proudly beside our manufacturing community. Our dedication remains unwavering as we continue to champion the interests of the manufacturing sector. Through effective advocacy, ongoing collaboration with both the public and private sectors, and our commitment to educate and mentor our member companies, we aim to create an environment where the manufacturing industry can thrive and prosper. Thank you for your dedication, hard work, and unwavering support. Together, we will shape a brighter and more prosperous future for Jamaica through the strength of our manufacturing sector.

JAMAICA EMERGING

MANUFACTURERS L’Jhean Beauty In an era loaded with filters and an array of photo editing apps, proper skincare can often be overlooked and for the persons who actually make skincare a part of their daily routine, finding products that works is another uphill task. Well, no need to worry as L’Jhean Beauty is here to take care of all your skincare needs and not just that, they do so while keeping the safety of your skin at the forefront of their products. That is, all their products are approved by the Scientific Research Council (SRC). But how did L’Jhean Beauty come about? Well, it can be said that L’Jhean Beauty was conceived out of a blessing in disguise. This is as such as it was the unfortunate diagnosis of cradle cap and eczema to Mrs. Jheanelle James’ (owner) son and the need to find healthy

treatment that led to its creation. Since then, Mrs. James has made it her mission to create authentic Jamaican skincare products that are not just inexpensive but have been formulated with a touch of luxury. Some of these products include but is not limited to lip balms, body butters, cleaners and shower gels. Special mention must be made of their creamy facial cleanser which doubles as a skin cleanser and face mask. It is best known for its hydrating effects as well as for treating acne, eczema and cirrhosis. With that said, if you need to add that extra glow to your skin, just grab one of L’Jhean Beauty’s products at Fontana Waterloo Square or visit their Instagram page @L’Jhean Beauty.

Edenjoy Whole Foods “If the people I love the most cannot eat it, I won’t sell it to other people because they have someone that loves them too” These were the words echoed by Elorine Pryce – owner of Edenjoy Whole Foods when commenting on her products. What started as just a hobby over 20 years ago is surely becoming a staple in every household. A holistic lifestyle is the foundation on which Edenjoy is built and as such, producing healthy food is their mantra. In fact, it is not merely healthy food, but Mrs. Pryce has been able to create a “lookalike” for almost every food in the market – albeit vegan style. There is a common misconception that once a product is vegan then more or less it does not stimulate the taste buds. Well, this is where Edenjoy Whole foods has been able to hold the edge over their competitors as they have been able to formulate vegan products that taste just as good or even better than their non-vegan counterpart. From having the most important meal of the day (breakfast) through to “feeling for something nice” Edenjoy has something in store for you. Some of these products includes but is not limited to sausages, cheese products, soups, breads and porridges. Edenjoy has gained recognition for their high-quality products as in 2022, their cream cheese spread was the JMEA Nicola Gordon Buy Jamaica product of the year and their parmesan cheese was among the nominees this year (2023). Edenjoy’s products can be found at Things Jamaican, Hi-Lo (Liguanea) and at Norman Manley International Airport. You can also visit edenjoywholefoods.com or contact them at (876)631-5466.

“WHOLE FOODS”

D’TOS Woodland Roots & Natural Drinks “Mek yuh food be yuh medicine, yuh medicine yuh food” is not just a famous line from a song titled Spirulina by reggae icon Chronixx but it epitomizes the foundation on which D’TOS Woodland Roots and Natural Juices is built. Founded in 2012 by Mr. Oliver Welsh, Woodland Roots might just be the detoxing that the market needs which has been clogged with fatty foods and sweet beverages. For Mr. Welsh, the reason for starting such a business exceeds that of the possible dollars and cents that he can earn but it is more of providing persons with a healthy beverage option for consumption. One such beverage is the hard driver which cleans the veins while promoting blood flow. Their ginseng drink keeps your memory intact while their merengue performs a similar role on the body by purifying it. One of their best sellers, the powerman, relieves back pain, promotes

good sleep and lastly but not least, provides both males and females with that extra “zip” in the bedroom. It should be noted that Mr. Welsh is not merely selling the proverbial “puss inna bag” but his products actually works for their intended use. This is due to the numerous testimonies given by his customers and this is what motivates him to continue on this venture. Woodland Roots products are available in Canada and locally at the following locations: General Food Supermarket (Liguanea), John R Wong Supermarket (New Kingston), Loshusan Supermarket (Barbican), Lees Boulevard Food Fair and at Woolworth (Downtown Kingston). Mr. Welsh may also be contacted at (876) 465-4924.

JMEA AND IDB STRENGTHEN COLLABORATION WITH HEART/ NSTA TRUST TO FOSTER MANUFACTURING SECTOR SKILLS COUNCIL

O

n Tuesday, September 19, 2023, the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) jointly conducted a courtesy visit to the HEART/ NSTA Trust - National Tool & Engineering Institute, located at 7 Ashenheim Road, Kingston. This visit was an integral step toward the establishment of a Manufacturing Sector Skills Council. The Manufacturing Skills Council is a visionary initiative driven by JMEA and the IDB aimed to reduce skills gaps and shortages, by enhancing the development of skilled workforces through the creation of a broader range of industryrelevant training programmes. The objective is to create a diverse and adaptable range of training programmes that align with the evolving demands of a modern manufacturing industry. This would ultimately increase opportunities to boost the skills and contribution of everyone in the industry’s workforce which would drive productivity and seek to not only fuel the industry’s growth but also ensure Jamaica remains competitive in the global arena. The importance of this initiative is underscored by the recent renewal of the Memorandum of

Understanding (MOU) between JMEA and HEART/ NSTA Trust. The renewed MOU reaffirms both parties’ shared commitment to advancing workforce development by expanding training programmes that not only align with industry needs but also remain adaptable to emerging trends and technologies. Outgoing President of the JMEA, John Mahfood shared that the availability of skilled labour is a pivotal concern for the advancement of both the manufacturing sector and Jamaica as a whole. He said, “Our collaboration with HEART/ NSTA Trust constitutes a crucial component of our Association’s long-term strategic plans. We find ourselves at a juncture where a scarcity of appropriately skilled labour could hinder the growth of our sector which is precisely why we have joined hands with HEART/NSTA Trust to produce a workforce that not only possesses the requisite skills but is also equipped to meet the evolving demands of modern manufacturing and associated industries, thus bolstering our sector’s vitality.” Managing Director of HEART/NSTA Trust, Dr. Taneisha Ingleton, reiterated the importance of having a skilled labour force available. She

shared that the manufacturing sector holds a prominent position among the eight key sectors that shape the programmes at HEART/NSTA Trust and as such the Trust has dedicated full attention to the manufacturing sector in its ongoing strategic plan for the upcoming five years.

Our focus is on substantial physical upgrades and development, and we are allocating $2.4 billion over the next three years to initiatives in manufacturing and related sectors, including agriculture, logistics, and the automotive industry. This decision is rooted in our recognition that if we aspire to achieve meaningful transformation and expedite growth and development within our nation we must give the manufacturing sector our utmost attention,”

said Dr. Taneisha Ingleton.

Kamesha Turner Blake, Executive Director of the JMEA in providing an overview on the tour and the broader vision of the collaboration with the IDB, HEART/NSTA and the JMEA noted that in April, a group from all three entities were part of a delegation that visited the UK to study their apprentice model with an objective to adopt a more modernised model in Jamaica. The UK Apprenticeship Programme is well established and very focused on outcomes as it combines practical training in a job, with studying targeted at people who are new to a job or in a role that requires training, thereby promoting life-long learning. The programmes are industry-led, which see private firms making a substantial investment into the development of industry standards for specific training / skills and recruiting suitable people. The visit came out of the engagement in the UK, to ensure that the industry has firsthand knowledge as to the programmes available at HEART/NSTA targeting the industry also to discuss the needs.
