MESSAGE FROM SENATOR THE HON. AUBYN HILL MINISTER OF INDUSTRY, INVESTMENT AND COMMERCE

As we celebrate Manufacturers’ Month, I acknowledge the invaluable contribution of Jamaica’s manufacturers and exporters to our nation’s performance and economic growth. The manufacturing industry continues to be a vital pillar of Jamaica’s economy, contributing 9% to our total real GDP in 2022 and demonstrating resilience through challenging times. Manufacturing is a major pillar of Brand Jamaica, it ensures that we have goods and services that are recognized and accepted in international markets.
Manufacturing empowers persons in our communities, and it creates a clear path to true economic independence. As we look to the future, Jamaica must prioritize the export imperative by increasing exports, entering new and nontraditional markets, and addressing our trade deficit. This will be critical to securing long-term economic independence and solidifying Jamaica’s standing as a leader in innovation, quality, and reliability.
The Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) has long been a champion for the sector, providing steadfast advocacy for manufacturers, and for Large and Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs). The work of the JMEA continues to enhance the visibility and competitiveness of Jamaican businesses both locally and internationally, I extend to the JMEA my heartiest congratulations.
The Ministry of Industry, Investment, and Commerce, Jamaica’s Business Ministry, and its 20 agencies are committed to supporting manufacturers in expanding their reach and enhancing their export performance. We are focused on creating policies and initiatives that foster easier access to financing, promote innovation, and open doors to new regional and international markets. It is through these concerted efforts that Jamaica will continue to grow its economy and improve the lives of our citizens.
Local Direct Investment (LDI) and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) play fundamental roles in driving the sector’s development. These investments empower businesses to expand, adopt new technologies, and improve their capacity and productivity. The Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce continues to work hard to secure more new and substantial investments from these two categories of investors.
As we move ahead, the export imperative should be at the forefront of our collective strategy. Expanding into non-traditional markets and increasing our exports will reduce our trade deficit and also strengthen our global economic footprint. This will secure Jamaica’s economic resilience ensuring that our nation thrives. Let us work together to build a more sustainable future for Jamaica, fuelled by innovation, increased productivity, collaboration, and significantly more exports.
Happy Manufacturers Month!

Island Indulgence:ATaste of Jamaica
Smith’s Rum Cream
From an old family “strong back” recipe to an award-winning company – little did Donald Smith know that a drink his family would casually mix and drink as “sumn fi di back” would turn into a beverage revered by many. In 2022, Mr. Smith found the “formula” to kickstart his entrepreneurial journey by leveraging his biochemistry background and combining it with the family recipe to develop Smith’s Rum Cream.
Now, this is not the typical rum cream you would come across – Donald has taken rum cream production to new heights. Not only does he produce it in exotic flavors such as Coffee and Butterscotch, but he also makes it lactose-free while still maintaining that “buzz” you get from having a drink or two. Mr. Smith even went further to ensure that everyone is catered for by creating two
Paris Ruby Gourmet
Many dream of visiting Paris, France, drawn in by its iconic landmarks, chic fashion, and, above all, its irresistible cuisine. While Paris Ruby Gourmet may not offer the Eiffel Tower or designer boutiques, it certainly satisfies any craving for exquisite pastries.
For many 2020 may be remembered as a year of loss and uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but for Zelecia Smith, it marked the start of a delicious new chapter: the launch of Paris Ruby Gourmet. Interestingly, Zelecia’s journey into baking didn’t begin with a love for the kitchen—in fact, she was quite the opposite. Yet, her passion for fruitcakes ignited a culinary spark. Frustrated by the lack of satisfying options, she began experimenting in her home kitchen, baking and selling fruitcakes each December. Over

Realizing that there’s only so much breadfruit one can roast and fry, Javian and his team applied their engineering skills in the kitchen, creating new ways to enjoy this local fruit. The result? Delicious pancake and muffin mixes, along with their signature product: breadfruit chips. Yes,

However, Rushiel, the owner of Wicks by Grey, embodies a different approach. For her, the creation of Wicks by Grey transcends the paycheck; it’s about enriching lives from the inside out. Rushiel doesn’t just craft scented candles designed to soothe the soul; she infuses each product with a personal touch by pairing them with unique quotes intended to uplift and inspire. Yaad Way Development
It’s often said that “every dark cloud has a silver lining,” and this phrase perfectly encapsulates the journey of Yaad Way Development. Founded by Dr. Donnel Martin, the company initially started as a producer of sugar scrubs and body butter. However, challenges with resources and logistics led to a temporary pause in that venture.
In 2022, through reevaluation and restructuring, Dr. Martin successfully pivoted to establish Yaad Way Development, which now offers a diverse range of products, including conditioners, shampoos, body washes, and spray air fresheners. What sets Dr. Martin apart from typical entrepreneurs is his impressive academic background; he holds a doctorate in pharmacy. This expertise ensures that his products are formulated to meet high standards, delivering quality that is both effective and affordable—precisely the “tonic” that the industry needs.
When it comes to authenticity, few companies can rival Yaad Way Development. Dr. Martin’s mantra is “to do something specific and to do it very well,” which forms the strong foundation of this brand. Whether you’re looking to achieve that radiant glow for your skin and hair or searching for an air freshener that delights your senses, Yaad Way Development offers just the breath of fresh air you’ve been seeking. You can find these products at Fesco in Stony Hill and Bert’s Auto locations islandwide, as well as other car parts stores.

JMEA Celebrates
STEPHEN DAWKINS: HONORING A LONGSTANDING DIRECTOR
Stephen Dawkins, Group Export Manager at Wisynco Group Limited, is one of Jamaica’s most respected corporate executives. With a passion for developing the country’s export landscape and a commitment to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), his contributions to the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) have been transformative.
JMEA:
A Purpose-Driven Start
Stephen’s journey with the JMEA began in 2013 when he joined the Jamaica Exporters Association (JEA) as a committee member. His motivation was simple yet powerful: “When businesses thrive, people thrive.” Stephen recognized early on that the key to national prosperity lay in empowering SMEs to overcome challenges and seize opportunities.
Through the JEA, he witnessed how mentorship and guidance could make a tangible difference. “I remember meeting several small business owners who struggled to access markets and scale production. Through the JEA’s guidance, we connected them with export opportunities and provided training on product development,” Stephen recalls. Today, many of these businesses are flourishing, employing more people, and supporting families—driving growth in their communities. This realization ignited Stephen’s passion for working with SMEs, setting the foundation for his extensive career with the JMEA, where his vision and determination became instrumental in the
growth of both the association and its members.
Empowering
SMEs: A Core Commitment
At the heart of Stephen’s work is his commitment to mentoring small businesses, helping them unlock their potential and grow. “Mentoring small businesses through the JMEA is one of my greatest pleasures. Seeing them grow and employ more people is what motivates me,” Stephen shares. His hands-on approach has connected businesses with export opportunities, provided training in product development, and guided them through the complexities of market expansion.
Stephen’s partnerships with organizations such as The Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ), EXIM Bank and the Small Business Association (SBA) have amplified his ability to support SMEs. His efforts have enabled countless businesses to scale operations and build capacity to compete successfully on the international stage. These success stories are not only a testament to Stephen’s expertise but also reflect his belief that when businesses thrive, Jamaica thrives.
The Historic JEA-JMA Merger: A Landmark Achievement
One of Stephen’s most significant accomplishments during his tenure with the JMEA was his pivotal role in leading the merger of the Jamaica Exporters Association (JEA) and the Jamaica Manufacturers Association (JMA). Working closely with Siwon Roberts, he helped unite these two powerhouse organizations to form the JMEA. This collaboration strengthened the sectors and positioned Jamaica to be more competitive in the global market.
Global Leadership and Trade Initiatives
In his role as Director at the JMEA, Stephen has taken Jamaica’s businesses to the world. He has spearheaded several international trade missions with JAMPRO to countries such as Canada, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, the United States, and the United Kingdom. His expertise in global trade has opened doors for Jamaican businesses, facilitating essential relationships and expanding the nation’s export footprint.
Stephen’s ability to navigate the complexities of global markets, combined with his commitment to SMEs, has created new opportunities for Jamaican enterprises to thrive. These trade

missions not only drive economic growth but also foster stronger international ties, further embedding Jamaica’s presence in highly competitive industries.
A Lasting Legacy of Impact and Vision
Stephen’s legacy within the JMEA and Jamaica’s business landscape is characterized by leadership, mentorship, and a clear vision for the future. Over the years, he has collaborated with several JMEA presidents, including Metry Seaga, Richard Pandohie, John Mahfood, and current president Sydney Thwaites, significantly contributing to the growth and sustainability of the association.
His work with both SMEs and large businesses reinforces his belief that the success of enterprises drives national prosperity. His impact extends beyond the corporate; it reflects a purpose-driven leadership where the growth of Jamaica’s business community is not merely a professional achievement but a personal mission. For Stephen, learning from both Wisynco’s William Mahfood and Andrew Mahfood has further propelled him to understand and appreciate that the growth of Jamaican enterprises is intricately linked to the success of the nation, and through his ongoing efforts, he continues to drive transformation in manufacturing and exporting.
