MINISTER OF INDUSTRY, INVESTMENT & COMMERCE

The government remains steadfast in supporting Jamaica’s manufacturing and export sectors – key drivers of economic growth. Expanding Jamaica’s export footprint remains a top priority, and Expo Jamaica 2025, under the theme “Global Partnerships: Advancing Jamaica’s Reach,” provides a vital platform for local businesses to connect with over 700 buyers and position Jamaican products on the world stage.

Strengthening our competitive edge requires tangible support, and we continue to deliver through initiatives like the Productive Input Relief (PIR) incentive, which provided over J$78 billion in relief last year - reducing production costs and enabling manufacturers to scale their operations and compete globally. At the heart of this effort is the Ministry of Industry, Investment, and Commerce, Jamaica’s Business Ministry, which, through its 20 agencies, plays a key role in empowering businesses. From regulatory guidance and financing to technical support and outreach initiatives such as the MSME Business Roadshow, we are ensuring that businesses – both large and small – have the resources to succeed.

Beyond large-scale manufacturing, we also champion Jamaica’s craft industry, recognizing its role in economic diversification and the preservation of our rich cultural heritage. These industries, together, form the backbone of a resilient and robust economy.

Your commitment to Jamaica’s industrial development is invaluable, and together, we are building a

Year after year, Expo Jamaica showcases the very best Jamaica has to offer—manufacturing excellence, cutting-edge export innovations, and the unmatched creativity that Jamaicans bring to the global stage.

At NCBJ, we are proud to have been a sponsor of Expo Jamaica for more than 15 years. Our continued sponsorship stems from our shared belief in the transformative power of entrepreneurship. Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of our economy. They drive innovation, create jobs, and foster economic growth through wealth creation; they are a force for good. According to the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), MSMEs contribute approximately 70% of jobs in Jamaica, making them critical to reducing unemployment and poverty.

MSMEs represent the spirit of unstoppable perseverance that defines Jamaica. I witnessed this firsthand in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. NCBJ believes that by investing in the success of Jamaican MSMEs, we are investing in the future of our nation. The JMEA believes in this shared vision, which is why collaborating with them for Expo Jamaica 2025 was an easy decision. Joy Spence has the honour of being the first female to hold the title of Master Blender in the Spirits industry. She has served as Appleton Estate’s Master Blender for nearly a quarter of a century, pouring her vast knowledge and perfectionism into every bottle of Jamaica’s most-celebrated rum.

Joy’s innate curiosity has driven her career since the beginning. Enamored with science at the young age of 13, she majored in the subject at University of the West graduating with a degree in Chemistry with First Class Honours. She then pursued a post graduate degree at the University of Loughborough in London, where she was awarded a Master of Science degree. Joy’s amazing career is chronicled at the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience at the Appleton Estate Distillery in St. Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica.

SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONES: TRANSFORMING JAMAICA’S ECONOMIC LANDSCAPE

The establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Jamaica is a significant step towards bolstering the nation’s economy. Designed to attract both local and international investment, the SEZ regime fosters business growth, innovation, and global market integration through a business-friendly framework that delivers measurable cost savings.

The Jamaica SEZ Regime: A Catalyst for Economic Diversification

Introduced in August 2016, Jamaica’s SEZ regime aims to create a globally competitive business environment while driving economic diversification. By attracting strategic investments aligned with Jamaica’s strengths, the framework extends beyond fiscal incentives, enhancing industry connectivity, knowledge transfer, and technological innovation. This dynamic ecosystem supports high-quality job creation and strengthens Jamaica’s integration into the global value chain.

JSEZA: Strengthening Governance and Business Facilitation

The Jamaica Special Economic Zone Authority (JSEZA) oversees the governance and regulation of SEZs, ensuring compliance with national and international business standards. Dedicated to improving the business environment, JSEZA proactively addresses challenges and implements solutions that enhance investor benefits. To streamline operations and increase efficiency, JSEZA has launched digital, customer-centric initiatives, including the automation of the SEZ application process and SEZ reporting process. These digital enhancements will be accessible through the JSEZA website and the Jamaica Business Gateway, improving ease of access for stakeholders. JSEZA continuously reviews its policies to facilitate businesses across various industries, ensuring they fully leverage the regime’s advantages. Through collaboration with key government entities— including the Jamaica Customs Agency and the Tax Administration of Jamaica—the Authority provides key services to clients and continuously works to strengthen the SEZ framework, providing investors with essential resources and support.

Businesses Thriving in Jamaica’s SEZs

Currently, 111 businesses operate within Jamaica’s SEZs, spanning key sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, information and communication technology (ICT), global digital services, and real estate development. The SEZ regime has a strong cadre of manufacturers operating in industries such as assembly operations, agro-processing, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and automotive components. All benefit from reduced operational costs that enhance their competitiveness in regional and global markets.

The Real Impact of SEZs on Doing Business

One of the most tangible benefits of operating within an SEZ is the significant cost savings. Companies in Jamaica’s SEZs experience a reduction in operational and start-up costs ranging from 20% to 35% due to tax incentives, customs duty relief, and streamlined business processes. These savings translate into increased reinvestment opportunities, job creation, and business expansion. The SEZ framework ensures businesses can optimize their cost structures while maintaining high-quality production standards.

Economic Impact and Opportunities for Investors

SEZs have played a vital role in driving economic growth, fostering the rise of “home-grown champions” capable of competing internationally. By promoting trade and partnerships within and beyond the zones, SEZs create a multiplier effect that stimulates the broader economy and generates new revenue streams.

For investors, the SEZ regime offers substantial fiscal incentives, making investment both costeffective and attractive. Businesses within SEZs enjoy a reduced corporate income tax rate of 12.5%, which can be further lowered to 7.75% through performance-based tax credits. Additionally, SEZs pay 0% customs duty on imported goods and 0% value added tax (General Consumption Tax) on goods and services purchased for use in their zones. Jamaica’s strategic geographic location— within a four-hour flight radius of over half a billion people—positions the country as an ideal nearshore manufacturing and distribution hub. This advantage enhances export potential and allows seamless integration into global supply chains.

SPECIAL

ECONOMIC ZONES: TRANSFORMING JAMAICA’S ECONOMIC LANDSCAPE

Impact on Industry Growth

The SEZ regime allows manufacturers to reinvest in innovation and business expansion, improving efficiency and competitiveness in global markets as a result of the cost saving realised. The regime has attracted assembly operations, high-value manufacturing, and technology-driven industries, strengthening Jamaica’s industrial base. In warehousing and distribution, SEZs facilitate seamless logistics operations, providing businesses with modern infrastructure and streamlined administrative procedures. This strengthens Jamaica’s position in global supply chains, allowing companies to efficiently export goods while minimizing logistical challenges.

Conclusion

Special Economic Zones are reshaping Jamaica’s economic landscape by attracting investment, fostering innovation, and promoting global market participation. With strong governance led by JSEZA and significant opportunities for investors, SEZs will continue to drive sustainable economic growth. As these zones evolve, they will contribute to job creation, technological advancement, and economic diversification—solidifying Jamaica’s position as a competitive force on the global stage.

JAMAICA’S SEA MOSS RENAISSANCE: A SUPERFOOD TAKING GLOBAL MARKETS BY STORM

Jamaicans are known for their resilience, strength, and pursuit of natural vitality. From sprinting to distance running, from farming to fishing, the Jamaican spirit thrives on endurance and stamina. It’s no surprise, then, that Irish moss—as sea moss is affectionately called— has long been a beloved staple in the local diet, especially among men seeking an extra boost of energy and virility.

For generations, the famous Irish moss drink has been the go-to power beverage, blended with condensed milk, nutmeg, vanilla, and secret aphrodisiac ingredients passed down through the years. However, as the world shifts toward plantbased, nutrient-rich superfoods, Jamaica’s sea moss is no longer just a backyard tonic—it has become a global commodity.

The Rise of Sea Moss as a Superfood

Scientifically known as Chondrus crispus, sea moss is rich in essential nutrients, including iodine, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and vitamins A, K, and E. Traditionally, cultures worldwide have used it as a natural thickening agent in soups and as a home remedy for colds and flu. Today, however, the sea moss craze has gone global, driven by the demand for organic, sustainable, and plant-based wellness products.

In 2023, the global sea moss market was valued at approximately US$2.58 billion and is projected

to grow to US$2.99 billion by 2030, at a steady compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.1%. With its nutrient-packed profile and adaptability in food, supplements, and cosmetics, sea moss has transitioned from folk medicine to a highvalue product on international shelves.

Jamaica: A Natural Hub for Premium Sea Moss

With its warm, tropical waters and thriving marine biodiversity, Jamaica has long been an ideal location for harvesting sea moss. Traditionally, coastal communities—particularly in St. Thomas, St. Mary, and Westmoreland—have engaged in small-scale harvesting, selling raw dried sea moss in local markets. However, with the global rise in demand, Jamaica is now taking a more structured approach to sea moss production.

Government and Industry Support

Recognizing its economic potential, the Jamaican government has backed various initiatives to commercialize sea moss cultivation. The Promoting Community-Based Climate Resilience (PPCR) in the Fisheries Sector Project, funded by the World Bank and executed through the National Fisheries Authority (NFA), has provided crucial training to fishers. These programs have empowered over 20 fishers with the skills to plant, harvest, and process sea moss, transitioning from traditional harvesting to structured farming techniques.

Jamaica’s strategic investments are already bearing fruit—literally and figuratively. The country leads the world in sea moss exports, with 268 export shipments, reinforcing its reputation as a global supplier of premium-quality sea moss.

The Evolution of Irish Moss: From Traditional Beverage to Modern Superfood

For many Jamaicans, Irish moss is synonymous with the thick, creamy, energizing beverage that generations have enjoyed. But today’s entrepreneurs are redefining sea moss, expanding its applications into diverse product lines:

Established Brands Offering Irish Moss Beverages

• Big Bamboo Irish Moss – A popular, widely recognized Irish moss beverage known for its rich, indulgent taste.

• Supligen Irish Moss (Seprod) – Recently introduced in a sleek, convenient canned format, bringing a modern twist to the traditional Irish moss drink.

• GraceKennedy – Household name in Jamaica’s food and beverage sector, offering Irish mossbased beverages that cater to both local and diaspora markets.

Emerging Sea Moss Product Innovations

Beyond the traditional drink, several Jamaican micro and small businesses have capitalized on sea moss’s versatility, creating a wide array of products, including:

• Sea Moss Gels – A ready-to-use, blended form of sea moss used as a supplement or added to smoothies.

• Sea Moss Powder – A concentrated form for easy incorporation into meals and drinks.

• Packaged Dried Sea Moss – Premium, wildcrafted sea moss for global export.

• Sea Moss Cosmetics – Skincare, soaps, and hair treatments that harness sea moss’s natural hydrating and mineral-rich properties.

Leading Jamaican Sea Moss Brands

• Jamaican Me Sea Moss – Founded in 2020, this company sources sea moss from pristine Jamaican waters and offers sea moss gels and capsules for health-conscious consumers.

• Salmon Point Organics – Specializing in 100% Jamaican Purple Irish Moss, wild-harvested off the coast of Westmoreland, with fresh and dried sea moss available via platforms like FarmLinkr.

JAMAICA’S SEA MOSS RENAISSANCE

A Golden Opportunity for Jamaica’s Blue Economy

Jamaica’s sea moss industry is more than just an economic opportunity—it represents sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities and reflects the country’s commitment to marine conservation and regenerative aquaculture. By investing in ethical and environmentally friendly harvesting practices, Jamaica has the potential to become a leader in the global sea moss market while preserving its marine ecosystems.

With global health trends shifting toward plantbased, clean-label products, the future looks bright for Jamaican sea moss. By strengthening supply chains, ensuring quality control, and leveraging its rich marine biodiversity, Jamaica is well-positioned to dominate this growing market.

Conclusion: A New Chapter for Jamaican Sea Moss

Sea moss is not just a passing trend—it is deeply rooted in Jamaica’s culture and is now emerging as an economic powerhouse. From the traditional Irish moss drink to innovative supplements and skincare products, Jamaican sea moss is capturing global attention.

For local farmers, fishers, and entrepreneurs, the message is clear: The world is ready for premium Jamaican sea moss. With the right investments and sustainable practices, Jamaica can harness its rich coastal resources to supply this superfood to health-conscious consumers worldwide.

Whether blended into a classic Irish moss punch or bottled as a beauty elixir, Jamaican sea moss is more than a product—it’s a legacy of strength, vitality, and island ingenuity, now thriving on the global stage.
