SO Captain Simoni ‘Sam’ Cavalieri is no stranger to Weston and steps in to become the new Weston District Chief.

Chief Cavalieri had been the Executive Officer

working alongside Chief Kevin Butler prior to his retirement.

The pair worked

shoulder-to-shoulder for the past year and half, going over statistics, reports and analyzing data each morning before their day started in earnest. Cavalieri had come back to Weston after being here as Lieutenant from 2016 to 2018 prior to being transferred to Executive Officer in charge of Operations at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, until his return in January 2019, much to Weston’s benefit. Chief Cavalieri has 31 total years of law enforcement experience 16 years of it supervisory & management experience.

He has spent time in Criminal Investigations Detective

Investigating Property Crimes, Economic Crimes, Sex Crimes, Aggravated Felonies, Child Abuse, Community Strategies Team, a Field Training Officer and Road Patrol. Chief Cavalieri knows Weston well. He knows its businesses, its schools and most of all he knows the Weston and BSO personnel and they know him. He is an experienced leader who leads by example and he looks forward to continuing positive working relationships with the community and keeping Weston’s crime rate one of the lowest in the County as well as the State. When not at work, the Chief enjoys being a dad to his 11-year old daughter Marina. Married 23 years to his lovely wife Candece, he does admit that he likes to sneak out and play golf once and awhile too. When asked what message he would like to share with the public, Chief Cavalieri stated, “ The importance of having a plan and being prepared due to our hurricane seasons continuing to be very active each year, and protecting each other by not hesitating to call BSO if you see anything or anyone suspicious.” We welcome Chief Sam Cavalieri to his new role as Chief of Police for Weston District VIII.

Back In The 1960’s, Where There Was Advertising There Was Bourbon. It was used to break the ice between hard-nosed business minds and free-spirited creative thinkers. It was raised heartily over successes and poured generously over defeats. Bourbon is iconic to the genesis of advertising. Perhaps, that’s because bourbon mirrors our business so closely. Crafting a great campaign takes talent and persistence. Its greatness often lies in nuance and subtlety. Some people appreciate this painstaking art, while others never quite get it. At Emblem, we partner with clients who revere the process; who strive for bold uniqueness; and who genuinely want to make something great. We’ve found these are the relationships that just keep getting better with age. Check out our work. Then, let’s meet for a drink.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOREVER AN EVENING WITH JOSH GAD

S

outh Florida’s own Josh Gad is returning to his hometown on October 15th for the David Posnack JCC’s (DPJCC) live, online, all-ages celebration, “For The First Time In Forever ” honoring community leaders Davia and Jim Mazur, and Jessica and Larry Genet. “It’s going to be a fun, meaningful, and magical night, and a unique opportunity to get up close with one of entertainment’s most in-demand performers,” said event co-chair, Cheryl Frost. The evening is presented by J Haskins Law, and sponsored by the MJZR Charitable Fund. Said attorney Jesse Haskins, “I’m excited to see Josh Gad, who graduated a few years before me at the University School of NSU. See you in October!” Over the past several years, Gad has shot to international fame as the original Elder Cunningham in “The Book of Mormon” (for which he earned a Tony Award nomination), LeFou in the live-action “Beauty and the Beast”, and, most famously, as the beloved snowman Olaf in Disney ’s “Frozen” movies. He has also written and produced a host of projects, including the current animated hit “Central Park ” on AppleTV+, and the YouTube quarantine sensation “Reunited Apart”, which brought together the casts of classic films including “The Goonies”, “Back To The Future”, and “The Lord of the Rings”. But just a few decades ago, Gad was a regular South Florida theater kid, attending “U School”, winning WESTON LIFE MAGAZINE I SEPTEMBER 2020

national forensics championships, and dreaming of stardom. “Josh was always an incredible student,” shared Bunny Blattner, a DPJCC Board Member and one of Gad’s high school teachers. “He always pitched in with all the shows we produced, no matter what his part was. I always loved his positive and funloving approach to life.” Added Cheri Rothschild, also a University School veteran and a long-time DPJCC member, “For a teacher, there’s always that student you just can’t forget, especially when he’s a pre-teen with a winning personality and a great deal of humor and creativity. Josh literally ‘stole the show ’ in my classroom!” The University School connections don’t end there; during the event, Josh will be in conversation with schoolmate, fellow actor, and current University School Director of Arts, Danny Swerdlow. “For The First Time In Forever ” will be the DPJCC’s largest fundraising event in this historic and tumultuous year. “Typically, the center is alive with students, campers, seniors, athletes, cultural arts events -- you name it,” said DPJCC CEO, Scott Ehrlich. “But 2020 has hit us hard, as it has so many others. Thanks to careful planning by our dedicated staff and board members, plus innovative changes to our programming, we are surviving. But I can’t wait for October 15th, when ‘for the first time in forever ’ we can unite to honor two deserving couples, celebrate everything we love about the J, and spend quality time with the amazing Josh Gad.”

WESTONLIFEMAGAZINE.COM

Gad’s maternal grandparents, Joseph and Evelyn Greenblatt, were immigrants and Holocaust survivors, a legacy that has weighed heavily on their descendants. For his part, Gad has been a vocal opponent of antisemitism, saying “I consider myself honored to carry on the legacy of a family who literally watched their loved ones murdered.” The DPJCC recently conducted an extensive Zoom interview with the Gad family about their history; a portion will be shared during the October 15th event, and the entire conversation will become part of the DPJCC’s George Gottlieb Program for Holocaust & Jewish Education in the Mania Nudel Holocaust Learning Center, which is currently being renovated and reimagined as a state-of-the-art facility that will honor the memory of survivors so that future generations will “Never Forget”. “We are honored that the Gad family would trust us with their personal history,” said Laurie Suskind, who co-chairs the project alongside designer, Craig Konhauzer. “Thanks to their generosity, future visitors to our center will have a better understanding of the Holocaust and its impact on survivors and their descendants.” On the night of October 15th, the DPJCC will be honoring Davia and Jim Mazur with the Community Leadership Award, and Jessica and Larry Genet with the Young Leadership Award. Said the Genets, “The J does so much for our

Jessica and Larry Genet WESTON LIFE MAGAZINE I SEPTEMBER 2020

community and is a home away from home for our family. We are incredibly grateful for this honor and look forward to supporting the J for many years to come.” And the Mazurs expressed what so many love about the DPJCC, saying “We are humbled to be the co-honorees of this unique virtual event. The J is truly our second home, and its members and staff are part of our extended family. From offering state-of-theart fitness facilities for all ages, to providing a local source of cultural activities, to embracing seniors and individuals with special needs, the JCC lives its purpose every day: to ‘enrich lives by connecting people.’ Thank you to all who support this worthy and important community organization.” “For The First Time In Forever ” with Tony Award nominee Josh Gad will be streaming live on October 15th, 2020. Access codes and sponsorships can be purchased at www.dpjcc.org/ forever. Do you have a question for Josh? Email a short video or written question to askjosh@ dpjcc.org for consideration. T

he recently redesigned Dan Marino Foundation website now includes an employment feature called “Employ a Graduate” directly linking employers to Marino Campus graduates seeking employment. The Dan Marino Foundation empowers people with autism and other developmental disabilities by supporting innovative programs in building independence through research, education, employment, and technology. “With unemployment expected to reach an all-time high of 20%, it is important for skilled workers to meet as many employers as possible in order to be considered for jobs,” said Mary Partin, CEO of the Dan Marino Foundation. “This service helps link hiring managers to our graduates that have the skills they are looking for”. Within the ‘Employ a Graduate’ section of the website, the graduate’s profile highlights their strengths and qualifications. This profile will spotlight any certifications earned by the student from nationally recognized entities such as CompTIA, Microsoft, or the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI), and employment interests. Employers can browse the potential candidates by industry (computer technology or hospitality) or match skills to vacancies within their organization. The employer would then request an interview with Marino Campus’ Career Services department where they will get connected with the

The Dan Marino Foundation anticipates companies to use this feature more as South Florida reopens. Cypress Bay High School and Parker Barry of Wellington Community High School Headline List of Champions For First-Ever Virtual Louder Than a Bomb Florida Poetry Festival Nearly 300 teens representing 32 different schools across five school districts participated in the 6th annual Louder Than a Bomb Florida Poetry Festival presented by UPS and Nova Southeastern University. Following nearly 450 poetic performances, the Cypress Bay High School Lightning Poets’ Society was named Team Champions while Parker Barry, a senior from Wellington Community High School captured the “Indy ” Poet Championship. Dubbed the “Super Bowl of poetry,” Louder Than a Bomb Florida, a Jason Taylor Foundation arts and education project as part of it’s Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network, is a festival featuring poetry bouts, workshops, exhibits, and ultimately the crowning of Florida’s top youth spoken-word poetry team. The most critical component, however, is the year-round, meaningful instruction inside the classroom and afterschool clubs, with teachers and teaching artists who create and facilitate a safe space for individual and collective expression. This year, as a result of the COVID -19 outbreak, the field of teams was reduced from a record 48 registered schools to the 32 that were represented in LTABFLA’s first-ever virtual competition. Students submitted self-made videos of their poems that were played online for live judges with a live host, all in a digital environment that was streamed for participants, their teachers, and families to see.

WESTON LIFE MAGAZINE I SEPTEMBER 2020

The team from Cypress Bay is led by Ms. Shawntee’ Herring, an English and Creative Writing teacher at the Weston based high school. Poets representing Boca Raton Community High School, Charles W. Flanagan High School and Miami Norland Senior High School joined Ms. Herring’s students on the LTABFLA Team Finals stage. LTABFLA is a team competition, however individual performances are also recognized, with the top 12 scoring poets of the entire festival advancing to the “Indy Finals.” Enduring a three-round, elimination style bout, Parker Barry captured first place, with Angelica Gonzalez of Cypress Bay and Isabella Ramirez of Palm Beach based A . W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts tying for second. Anna Bayuk Named South Florida Youth Poet Laureate The Jason Taylor Foundation is pleased to announce that Anna Bayuk has earned the honor of being named South Florida Youth Poet Laureate (SFYPL) for the 202021 school year. Anna, a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, will have her chapbook of original poems, Venus of the Swamp, released during a celebratory event at the Ultimate studioblu in Weston later this year, and will participate in a number of philanthropic and performance opportunities. The South Florida Youth Poet Laureate competition is a collaboration between the Jason Taylor Foundation’s WESTONLIFEMAGAZINE.COM

Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network, and Urban Word, a New York-based literary arts education and youth development organization. Anna is now the fifth ever winner of the South Florida award. “The South Florida Youth Poet Laureate program allows for the pen of a poet to outweigh the performance of a spoken word artist,” said Epiphany, bluapple Poetry Programs Coordinator. “This program highlights the skill of these young wordsmiths and every year I am thoroughly impressed at how the voices of the young people are able to resonate with me and the panel of judges. Congratulations to this year ’s winners and thank you to all of the other poets who submitted.” An esteemed panel of educators, authors, poets and community professionals meticulously read through the largest submission pool since the inception of the South Florida Youth Poet Laureate program that included a portfolio of poetry and each student’s résumé. At the end of the process, one Youth Poet Laureate and two Youth Poet Ambassadors were selected. The Ambassadors are Daniel Ardila, a senior at Coral Springs High School, and Julia Safrin, a senior at Cooper City High School. Tia Ebanks Wins blu is For Apples Elementary School Poetry Contest For the second consecutive year, the Jason Taylor Foundation held its “ blu is for Apples” poetry contest in partnership with Hoffman’s Chocolates. This year, Tia Ebanks, a fifth grader at Walker Elementary School in Ft. Lauderdale, was selected as the overall winner from more than 450 submissions. Participating schools received visits from bluapple Poetry Network staff and Teaching Artists, who lead students in writing workshops. Students were required to write a poem inspired by the prompt: The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree; what kind of tree do I come from? Each school chose their top poems to represent them in the Grand Prize contest, and those students and their classmates were rewarded with a Hoffman’s Chocolates “Sweet Ride Truck ” ice cream party. Hoffman’s Chocolates also awarded the overall winning student from each school with their ideal custom caramel apple. As the Grand Prize Winner, Tia won a Hoffman’s Chocolates Apple Decorating Party for her entire class. Castle Hill Elementary School in Lauderhill received a $500 donation as the school with the highest percentage of participation as more than 55% of the entire student body submitted a poem. About the Jason Taylor Foundation In July 2004, Miami Dolphins legendary Defensive End, Jason Taylor, established the Jason Taylor Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) organization. The Foundation’s mission is to support and create programs that facilitate the personal growth and empowerment of South Florida’s children in need by focusing on improved health care, education and quality of life. Since opening its doors, the Jason Taylor Foundation has impacted tens of thousands of children through innovative programming including The Jason Taylor Reading Room, Cool Gear for the School Year, the Jason Taylor Children’s Learning Center, Jason Taylor Scholars and the Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network, among others. A MODERN WORKSPACE

KELLEY KRONENBERG

K

elley Kronenberg, a diverse business law firm, recently hosted a grand opening event for its state-of-the-art corporate headquarters. More than 300 invited guests attended the catered affair and helped the firm celebrate the opening of its new 35,000-square-foot home located at 10360 West State Road 84 in Davie. “It brings me great joy to celebrate this significant milestone,” said Heath Eskalyo, CFO and principal partner who spearheaded the project for the firm. “Our new headquarters gives us the capacity to continue growing while enabling our team to better serve clients.”

sessions in a relaxed atmosphere, as well as a dedicated education center for employee training. The first floor also includes a mock courtroom, equipped with cameras and monitors that enable clients to participate in trial preparation remotely if they are not available to visit in person. Perhaps most impressive, the building features a rooftop terrace that incorporates landscaping, canopycovered kitchen, and bathrooms. The rooftop provides an open-air venue for Kelley Kronenberg employees to gather, eat and conduct meetings, as well as host client and firm events.

Eskalyo continued: “We have created a modern workspace that supports the firm’s efforts to promote and cultivate an inclusive environment where we celebrate diversity, families, and work-life balance.”

Another popular addition for the firm’s staff includes an employee café, complete with large TVs and modern, casual seating to serve as a common area for employees to take a break and share lunch with their co-workers.

The new structure emphasizes an inspiring workspace thoughtfully curated to foster collaboration and client convenience. The facility features private office suites, as well as collaborative workstations, in a space with distinctive architecture and progressive design elements.

Cabrera Ramos Architects of Doral designed the new headquarters. Alvarez Studios in Miami designed the interiors. The general contractor was Miller Construction based in Fort Lauderdale. Michael and Tyler Harrison of Equistone Partners served as development advisors, and SunTrust provided the construction loan.

The lobby boasts an architectural staircase that leads to a glass-panel balcony. There are two large conference areas that can transform into one great room for events, significant co-working common spaces, or smaller spaces to gather for informal brainstorming

As Kelley Kronenberg celebrates the opening of this new space, it also marks another milestone. In October 2019, the firm reached the 300 employee mark. This includes more than 140 lawyers practicing throughout Florida and Illinois.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

Chief Kevin Butler Retiring After 40 years in law enforcement, Weston Police Chief Kevin Butler is retiring. He is a Captain with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Law Enforcement, and District Chief of District VIII-Weston. Chief Butler has been in Weston 9 years now, since May 2011. He began his law enforcement career with the City of Pompano Beach in 1980 as a deputy. Pompano later merged with the Broward Sheriff’s Office in 1999.

Chief Butler has seen and done it all - road patrol, sergeant, Criminal Investigations Unit detective, lieutenant, section commander for the Street Crime Unit, Gang Unit, Organized Crime Unit, Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Auto Theft and Cargo Theft Unit. Captain Butler graduated from the Southern Police Institute Officer Command Development School in 1996 and the prestigious FBI National Academy in 2006. He also commanded the Strategic Investigations Division for the County all before coming to Weston.

Weston was thrilled to gain someone of Chief Butler’s experience but more than that, what shone through was his easy manner and quiet confidence. Through the years, Chief Butler has consistently worked at relationship building to eliminate the negativity and stereotypes of deputies and police officers through efforts such as Coffee with a Cop, the annual Winter Safety Expo, Crime Watch on Your Corner and more. He has always taken every effort to engage in a positive environment, to get to know individuals in the community, share a smile and a story - and an Irishman is always fresh with a story!

10 Best Towns for Families, Money Magazine - 2015 It is not by accident that people buy homes in Weston at the rate that they do. They choose to live here for a number of factors and one of them is safety. For that we thank Chief Butler and the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office. Leadership comes from the top. The work he and the department does every day provides tremendous help to individuals, families and businesses in our City. Chief Butler’s generosity of time and energy, a compassionate nature, and dedication to community is also another factor in his success. He would be the first at an event and the last to leave and looked forward to anything that had to do with children. A father of two grown children and now a grandfather of two, Poppi has a soft spot for the little ones and plans to spend a lot more time with his wife and family.

Chief Butler has consistently shown a generosity of time and energy, a compassionate nature, and dedication to our community. Through his leadership the City of Weston has seen multiple years of Safe City recognitions and awards that far exceed our expectations such as:

Chief Butler was a member of the Rotary Club of Weston during his time here, a service organization to help others. Why? Not because it was expected of him, but because he believes in the motto of ‘Service Above Self’. That is how he has lived his life, both personally and professionally. Chief Butler is continuing on with Rotary after retirement which is of no surprise to anyone who knows him. Always giving, always serving.

Have Yourself a Day in

Quarantine One rooftop bar and brunch recommendation at a time.

W

by Jenna Kline

e’re going through a new normal as a world right now. So instead of a typical blog post that features a guide for a specific neighborhood or city, I decided to curate a full-day of recommendations for spending your time in quarantine. To be honest, I’ve really been trying to make the most of my days, even while physically isolated. During a meditation session I took part in, the instructor said changing your phrasing of a situation can ultimately have a huge impact on your perception of it. So instead of thinking about what this pandemic is doing to me, I’ve rephrased it to take more control of the situation. So when I plan out each week, I think about ways in which I get to live my life while in quarantine, taking more control of my life. Yes, I miss my friends, my in-person coffee runs, my coworkers, and my old life back in New York. However, we’re probably never going to have an opportunity like this again to put our lives on pause and really focus on putting ourselves (and those in our community) first. So, in this quarantine, I’ve planned events, tuned in to livestreams, learned how to make whipped coffee, valued the importance of self-care, and came together with strangers for a common cause. Now, I want to share this guide on how you can have yourself a day while in quarantine — because let’s face it, we’re going to be here a lot longer. So why not infuse a bit more positivity into our days and make the most of our virtual times ahead?

Morning Workout I’ve been starting each morning, whether it’s a weekday or weekend, with a workout. No, don’t worry, I didn’t become a fitness freak during this quarantine, and no one expects you to, either. Instead, I’ve been setting aside about 45 minutes when I wake up to take part in some type of physical, mental, or emotional workout. Whether it’s livestreaming a boxing class to let off steam, foam rolling and stretching to take care of my body, or meditating for my day ahead, any bit of workout for my body or mind first thing in the morning has really made a positive impact on my mood each day. As I’m sure most of you have seen by now, there are a bunch of online workout class options to choose from. I’m pretty big into pilates and boxing, so some of the classes that I’ve been live streaming or watching on YouTube include Rumble, Shadowbox, Cassey Ho’s Blogilates, and pvolve. And for those who want a bit more motivation to get their body moving, I’d recommend starting with a few Cassey Ho videos. I’ve been doing her workouts since college, and I truly swear by her. She does each move of the workout with you, making them more enjoyable and less daunting. Her workouts are typically low impact, which is great for people who are injury-prone like myself, and her videos include modifications so that people of all levels can join. Her videos are super positive and engaging, so for anyone just looking for a place to start, search her name on YouTube along with the part of your body that you want to target. I know that should get you off to a great start. For those who are trying to test out as many different workouts as they can right now with their free time, Sweats & The City posted a list of some of the great fitness deals and free trials going on right now. This way, you can test out a variety of programs and instructors to find out which type of workout you’re most excited to stick with.

Brunch I don’t know about you, but in our household, our meals are very important to us, especially when there’s not too much going on during the day. With my sister being vegetarian and myself being Gluten Free and Dairy Free for the last few months, we’ve got some tricky diets to accommodate. Luckily, there’s a ton of food bloggers sharing simple breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert recipes that literally anyone can make. It also makes for a great bonding activity with family or whoever you’re quarantined with. Some brunch recipes that we’ve been having in the mornings include Purely Kaylie’s banana bread pancakes, Eating Bird Food’s Somoa baked oatmeal, and Feel Good Foodie’s date shake. We also just ordered a juicer, so I’ve been having celery juice in the mornings, and if I’m craving something fruity, a strawberry banana smoothie with nut milk and other mix-ins are always a simple breakfast.

Afternoon Activities Give Yourself a Brain Boost I’ve really enjoyed giving myself an early afternoon brain boost to keep my energy going throughout the day. The New York Times offers a NYTimes Free Crossword Puzzle, which is a really fun daily activity that gets you thinking and just takes a few minutes out of your day. Working on a puzzle with family is always a great afternoon break, as well, especially during the work day. I’ve found that stopping my work for just a few minutes to work on a puzzle actually helps get my mind even more engaged, especially when there’s a more daunting work assignment that I’ve been putting off. Additionally, universities have been offering a bunch of free online classes through Coursera, which can definitely keep people busy and productive during these times. I’ve enrolled in Yale’s Science of Well-Being course, which has been extremely interesting and engaging, thus far. It’s completely free and comes with taped lectures, additional supplements or readings, and quizzes to ensure you’ve retained the information (which you also have the option to skip over if you’d like). I’d highly recommend you enrolling in a class that is of interest to you if you want to commit a few hours to learning rather than binging Hulu — or you can do both, like myself!

Tune Into IG Lives I’ve spent way too much time watching IG Lives during quarantine, but I really don’t regret it. I’ve tuned into live streams on topics across the spectrum, whether it’s joint workout videos, musicians live streaming themselves singing, virtual EDM concerts, or wellness tips from experts. I never thought I’d have watched tutorials on how to make a wine mask, how to give yourself a head massage, or how to foam roll the proper way — but hey, when in quarantine! I’d recommend that you go to the Instagram accounts of your favorite celebrities, sports leagues, brands, and clothing companies, and turn on the accounts’ IG Live notifications. Feel free to do some research beforehand to see which accounts have been posting frequently, connecting with guests virtually, and sharing content that you enjoy. If that’s the case, I’d recommend setting up those notifications so that you can continue being up-to-date with those specific accounts.

Don’t get me wrong, I always love a good spontaneous Houseparty call, but having events in my calendar definitely have made me have things to look forward to each day. These thoughtful events can event make some lasting memories when all of this is way behind us.

Connect with People I’ve found that my time in quarantine has allowed myself to actually connect with a lot more people than usual. I’ve been able to have the time to chat with hometown or college friends much more frequently, I’ve been able to spend quality time with many more of my New York friends, and I’ve been able to catch up with grandparents much more frequently. With many of my friends having much lighter schedules, I’ve been enjoying being able to truly catch up with the people I love without being in such a rush.

Practice Skill/Hobby Whether it’s reading, writing blog posts or playing Rummikub with the people you’re quarantined with, there’s so many fun activities that you can spend your time enjoying. You can also utilize apps to help you hone any skills that you’ve been wanting to work on like practicing your dribbling skills with the app Homecourt or even upping your GenZ dancing moves by learning viral TikTok dances. I’ve also used this free time to get more caught up on pop culture, which has included catching up on podcasts that I’d missed and watching relevant series that I never had the time to watch before, like Love is Blind.

Host Events Just because you’re quarantined, you do not have to be bored in the house, in the house bored. I would recommend ramping up your video calls with friends so that you can make them more of an event. By sending out a calendar invite, giving some sort of theme for a catch-up, and including a few people, it’s kept my catch-ups with friends engaging and has also held people more accountable to join. Whether it’s by creating a virtual book club, setting up an afternoon tea or virtual coffee sesh with friends, or even throwing a dance party at night, putting a name to your planned catch-ups can be fun. I even hosted a virtual prom a few weekends ago, where Prom 2020 Kings and Queens were crowned, superlatives were named, and we laughed about prom memories. Don’t get me wrong, I always love a good spontaneous Houseparty call, but having events in my calendar definitely have made me have things to look forward to each day. These thoughtful events can event make some lasting memories when all of this is behind us.

DIY DINNER Remember what I said earlier with my family having specific diet restrictions? Well, that hasn’t made cooking dinner too easy, especially for a family that never did it too frequently to begin with. Luckily, we’ve looked up healthy, simple recipes that aren’t too fancy and can be modified for each diet. For those looking for recipes that literally anyone can do, feel free to try cooking up the following meals: a vegan lentil loaf, sweet potato tacos, vegan buffalo wing sliders, and black bean soup.

Support Local Eats If you and your family want to take a break from cooking and just support a local restaurant, that totally works, too. I’d recommend looking up recent articles that cover restaurants still open in your area and just giving them a call to make sure they’re still open before you go. We’ve been supporting our local vegan supermarket for groceries and our favorite restaurants and cafes on Las Olas.

Night Activities: Movie & TV Nights with Friends There are so many night activities that you can do with your friends or family that allow you to still relax while connecting with friends. I’ve set up recurring movie or TV show nights with friends. This way, we know that we get to catch up for a bit weekly while also watching a movie or TV show that we’ve been wanting to. In terms of logistics, I usually have my friends up on FaceTime — or use the Netflix Party extension when watching a show on Netflix — to be able to chat with friends while watching.

Wellness Night Self-care has really been a constant theme of my quarantine time. For those who love to be pampered, I’d recommend searching wellness magazines or brands on Instagram, and look at whether they have done any IG Lives with wellness professionals. My favorite accounts to follow have been Chillhouse, Well+Good, and Heyday. I’d recommend setting up a wellness night with some friends, grab a glass of wine, ingredients for a DIY face mask, and nail polish that you’ve had lying around. Pamper yourself because this quarantine is your time, and you deserve to make the most of it.

Virtual Get-Togethers You can set up Zoom happy hours for any occasion, whether it’s doing a virtual seder, celebrating peoples’ birthdays, or just having a White Claw with friends (virtually, of course). We also use Houseparty for more impromptu calls, which also have games to keep your calls light and interactive. The games include versions of Pictionary (called Quick Draw), Cards Against Humanity (called Chips & Guac), Ellen DeGeneres’ inspired Heads Up, and Trivia.

Online Seminars I used to attend General Assembly live courses and seminars in New York, and I’ve been continuing to keep up with their events that have moved virtual. For those who don’t know, General Assembly is an education company that teaches people a range of skills on their campuses worldwide. The company offers so many types of courses and programs — but I’d recommend checking out their free, virtual events or seminars to learn something new and perhaps find a topic that you may want to pursue further afterwards.

Sports Throwbacks Yes, the sports world has shut down, but for those creative enough, sports never really stops. My dad and I record or search for basketball games from 30+ years ago with NBA greats that I never had the chance to watch play. Getting to spend time with my dad reliving these monumental games in sports history is something I’d highly recommend to any sports fan, especially if you share that love with a family member or friend.

I hope you enjoyed this guide that I’ve been following on how to have myself a day while in quarantine. And for those who have been very affected by this pandemic and aren’t looking for a full day of activities like these, perhaps just pick one of these recs that will spark a little joy in your day. I’m hoping there’s at least one thing you can take from this article that can make your day a little brighter.

Thank you for reading, and please be well and stay safe. WESTON LIFE MAGAZINE I SEPTEMBER 2020

How to Order a

FREE Credit Report By William E. Lewis Jr.

Before applying for an automobile, credit card, or home mortgage loan, it’s a good idea to check your credit report for errors. Banks, credit unions, auto finance and mortgage lenders have all raised the bar when making credit granting decisions. Long gone are the days when a 620 FICO credit score sufficed. Borrowers with bad credit are being turned down or forced to pay significantly higher interest rates when applying. Those with low credit scores have even been denied employment opportunities and automobile insurance. Negative information contained in credit reports – such as late payments, collection accounts and public record entries - determine whether you can obtain credit, goods, benefits, services, employment and/or insurance. It’s important to review your Equifax, Experian and TransUnion credit reports on a regular basis and correct any information that is inaccurate, erroneous, obsolete, or fraudulent due to possible identity theft. Don’t be scammed by the numerous “free credit report” opportunities found on the Internet. While dozens of companies offer that so-called “free credit report,” many of them have strings attached, such as subscription-based opt-in requiring you to provide credit card information. You really can obtain a free copy of your credit report. Under a narrow set of circumstances, you are entitled to a free copy of your credit report directly from the credit reporting agencies. If you have been denied credit, goods, benefits, services, employment or insurance, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are statutorily mandated under the Fair Credit Reporting Act to provide a copy without charge. Equifax can be contacted at (800) 685-1111 or online at www.Equifax.com. Experian can be contacted at (888) 397-3742 or online at www.Experian.com. Trans Union can be contacted at (800) 916-8800 or online at www.TransUnion.com. When ordering credit reports, be sure to indicate that you were denied credit, goods, benefits, services and/or employment when prompted. Absent these exceptions, you are entitled to one free “annual credit report” per year. For your free annual credit report, contact the central source at 877-FACT-ACT (877-322-8228) or online at www. AnnualCreditReport.com. Follow the voice prompts and obtain your credit report for review. Credit scores are not included with any of the “free credit reports” provided by the national credit reporting agencies of Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
