Weston’s First Female Rabbi Temple Dor Dorim’s Rabbi Marci Bloch

JULY 2020 | FROM THE PUBLISHER HAPPY 4th of JULY – STAY SAFE For 244 years we have celebrated America’s Independence with all kinds of fanfare and fireworks. This year has certainly been an interesting one. Who would have thought there would be no, parades, no fireworks, and no beach gatherings on Independence Day? Well, that is what we must do to stay healthy. Regardless of the point of view, we should all heed the emergency orders laid out by the County in conjunction with the CDC guidelines. #WearAMask - #SocialDiistance - #WashYourHands. Let us hope this pandemic subsides and a cure is found soon. Exciting news in our community as we welcome a new Spiritual Leader to one of our long-standing religious institutions. And a first for Temple Dor Dorim and for the City – Our First Female Rabbi! Rabbi Marci Bloch will take over July 1st. She comes with extensive experience, passion, and a new vision in these challenging times. I had the good fortune to meet her and I am sure you will be enlightened when you read her story. Hispanic Women of Distinction is annual event that will go on. All these women are truly remarkable personally and professionally. They have excelled in their careers as well as in their community leadership. Some even hail from our great city. We are immensely proud of their inspiring accomplishments. As many of you know, I am a Past President and an active member of the Rotary Cub of Weston. Every July 1st, Rotary’s Leadership changes as does out annual theme. This year’s theme is “Opening Doors to Opportunities!” This has many meanings. Tome, it is a chance to continue to serve with a diverse group of men and women leaders in out community. It is a chance to learn and build on our ideals that all vocations can make our society better. And, we can create lasting opportunities for the future. With that, I would like to invite you to check out Rotary. We meet every Thursday (by Zoom now) and are continuing our service projects. You will see how we just awarded 56 scholarships for over $150,000 to financially worthy students from our local high schools in this issue, as an example of our service. Lastly, Weston lost a great human being last month. Dr. Rob Sheinberg was a great husband, father, doctor, philanthropist, neighbor and a great friend to me and thousands of others. Most attended his celebration of life via Zoom. There a teaching in Judaism – Tikkum Olam – translated to Improve the World. Rob di that and more! His Legacy can be seen throughout the city with all the athletes he treated, the people he assisted and the buildings he helped to build. Most notably the Weston YMCA. There is a tribute to him in this issue. Godspeed Rob. We’ll see you up the road. Have a Safe Month and as always, Enjoy the Life & Leave a Legacy!

Enjoy The Life

WELCOME Rabbi Marci Bloch

The City of Weston welcomes Rabbi Marci Bloch as a new spiritual leader in our community. Rabbi Bloch begins her new position at Temple Dor Dorim this July. Previously, Rabbi Bloch served at Congregation B’nai Israel in Boca Raton and Temple Beth Orr in Coral Springs. Rabbi Bloch is looking forward to meeting the members of the congregation and is excited to bring family-friendly creative programming to the Temple. Rabbi Bloch is also thrilled to lead Temple Dor Dorim with her dear colleague and friend, Cantorial Soloist, Robin Koota who has been part of her journey for the last 15 years. Rabbi Bloch and Robin Koota most recently served together at Temple Beth Orr.

Before being ordained at Hebrew Union College in New York, Rabbi Bloch earned a B.A. in Psychology from Michigan State University and Master’s degree in Social Work and a Certificate in Judaic Studies and Jewish Communal Service from the University of Michigan. Rabbi Bloch is known nationwide for developing innovative programs for both children and adults. Bloch enjoys bringing experiences for her families that encourage their love of Judaism. For example, at Congregation B’nai Israel, she launched the synagogues first “Shabbark Shalom.” This unique, annual Shabbat service took place outside and pets were invited. Now that’s getting the whole family involved! One participant was rumored to have brought his pet skunk one year! Rabbi’s Bloch demonstrates how you can make Judaism more personal by creating programs where people of all ages can learn and connect. One

WESTON LIFE MAGAZINE I JULY 2020

of her award-winning programs is called Good Night Shabbat where young families join together to welcome the new week on a Saturday night. She also created a preschool and religious school “Moms” Group called Mommy Minyan that involved Jewish learning that is approachable, not at all intimidating. Rabbi Bloch has also been recognized as a leader in the development of a community of Jewish professionals in their 20’s and 30’s, connecting Jewish young adults from Miami to Palm Beach to learn and socialize together. She has been a featured speaker at many URJ Biennials over the past ten plus years. At Temple Dor Dorim, Rabbi Bloch has to use her creativity and flexibility to start her new adventure virtually. She is meeting members via Zoom so her new congregation can start getting to know her. Unfortunately, Temple Dor Dorim is not meeting in person right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rabbi Bloch really wants to start forming relationships. “Seeing a face right now is really important.” She understands “the power of the smile” in these trying times. Transitioning to a new synagogue in the midst of a pandemic seems very challenging, but Rabbi Bloch makes it look easy. “My goal during this transitional time is to connect with the congregants and help them connect with each other.” She wants to “let them know that they are not alone” and continue to help them through this unprecedented time together. This is not the first time that Rabbi Bloch has been a pillar of support during moments of crisis and sorrow. Her former synagogue, Temple Beth Orr, neighbors Parkland and was directly impacted by the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. With her social work background, she was able to jump into action and help create healing amongst the members in her

synagogue and the larger Coral Springs community. Rabbi Bloch said that presence and connection are key right now, which is why she has created—and is still brainstorming—new ways to create community virtually. She wants to “make sure people feel loved” and that “the community is supported.” Rabbi Lipson, Dor Dorim’s founding rabbi, is excited for this new leadership. He described Rabbi Bloch as “very well respected in the rabbinical community” and “somebody who wants to listen, to learn, and help people grow.” He admires how community oriented she is and how much her past congregations have truly loved her. “Dor Dorim means throughout the generations… This synagogue builds upon past generations, grows from them.” He said that the one constant part of all of Dor Dorim’s generations is that the congregation loves each other, a legacy he has no doubt that Rabbi Bloch will continue. Incoming President, Neal Topf said, “Temple Dor Dorim couldn’t be more excited to welcome Rabbi Marci Bloch as our new Rabbi. Rabbi Bloch’s arrival has invigorated our membership across all generations and demonstrated that Judaism is alive and well at Dor Dorim and in Weston.

WESTONLIFEMAGAZINE.COM

Rabbi Bloch brings a fresh approach to spirituality and the practice of Judaism and of living Jewishly that our membership has wanted. Together with Rabbi Bloch, we have begun to modernize the way we operate and the experiences we offer our members, strengthening the connections felt within our community. Rabbi Bloch is also Dor Dorim’s first female rabbi. She appreciates that being the first woman rabbi at Dor Dorim is an honor, but she really does not see a reason to focus on that since there have been so many trailblazers before her. Rabbi Bloch explains, “What makes a rabbi is wisdom, love of Judaism, passion for community, compassion, and the ongoing struggle to understand and know God and to help others do the same.” Outside of her role as rabbi, she adores musicals specifically Broadway. Her favorites are Les Misérables and anything by Andrew Lloyd Webber. She loves to travel, especially to North Carolina. She also enjoys places where she can be outdoors, exploring nature. Most of all, she loves being with her family—her husband Jason and her daughters. To any Dor Dorim members reading this, you are in great hands.

Back In The 1960’s, Where There Was Advertising There Was Bourbon. It was used to break the ice between hard-nosed business minds and free-spirited creative thinkers. It was raised heartily over successes and poured generously over defeats. Bourbon is iconic to the genesis of advertising. Perhaps, that’s because bourbon mirrors our business so closely. Crafting a great campaign takes talent and persistence. Its greatness often lies in nuance and subtlety. Some people appreciate this painstaking art, while others never quite get it. At Emblem, we partner with clients who revere the process; who strive for bold uniqueness; and who genuinely want to make something great. he 19th annual Hispanic Women of Distinction Charity luncheon to be held on November 20, 2020 at Signature Grand in Davie, Florida is anticipating another sell-out of up to 1000 guests paying tribute to Latina professionals who are strengthening the social fabric of this country and making inroads in the leadership pipeline for a growingly diverse America. The annual cultural event has now grown to be the largest celebration of Latinas in Florida representing a cross-section of disciplines that are changing the face of American culture. With over 70 nominations this year, 12 Latinas and a Latina Pioneer have been selected to join the more than 200 past honorees. What the women have in common and is a major part of the judging process, is their American entrepreneurship intertwined with their values and traditions. The accomplishments of these Latinas stand on their own and are even more significant given the traditional roadblocks that exist for women, especially Latinas. Presented by Latina Style Magazine, the nation’s leader in Hispanic women business, in partnership with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, this popular high-powered exciting event includes a complimentary “mojito” and silent auction, hors d’hoerves, entertainment, and an interactive business expo on Facebook Live. The event benefits FLITE Center, the one and only one-stop in Broward County for youth transitioning from foster care and other transitioning youth who are facing severe risks and challenges with no family support. FLITE Center works alongside our county’s foster care placement agency, ChildNet, as well as the Judges and Magistrates who oversee their care plans. DAN MARINO FOUNDATION’S NEW WEBSITE LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE ‘EMPLOY A GRADUATE’ FEATURE TO CONNECT EMPLOYERS TO RECENT GRADS New web service directly links employers to graduates that have the skills they are looking for.

WESTON LIFE MAGAZINE I JULY 2020

WESTONLIFEMAGAZINE.COM

T

he recently redesigned Dan Marino Foundation website now includes an employment feature called “Employ a Graduate” directly linking employers to Marino Campus graduates seeking employment. The Dan Marino Foundation empowers people with autism and other developmental disabilities by supporting innovative programs in building independence through research, education, employment, and technology. “With unemployment expected to reach an all-time high of 20%, it is important for skilled workers to meet as many employers as possible in order to be considered for jobs,” said Mary Partin, CEO of the Dan Marino Foundation. “This service helps link hiring managers to our graduates that have the skills they are looking for”. Within the ‘Employ a Graduate’ section of the website, the graduate’s profile highlights their strengths and qualifications. This profile will spotlight any certifications earned by the student from nationally recognized entities such as CompTIA, Microsoft, or the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI), and employment interests. Employers can browse the potential candidates by industry (computer technology or hospitality) or match skills to vacancies within their organization. The employer would then request an interview with Marino Campus’ Career Services department where they will get connected with the

graduate for an interview. The Dan Marino Foundation launched the Employ a Graduate feature in May 2020. The Dan Marino Foundation anticipates companies to use this feature more as South Florida reopens. Employers who are hiring are encouraged to visit www. danmarinofoundation.org to learn more about the Employ a Graduate feature. About the Dan Marino Foundation: Founded by Dan and Claire Marino shortly after their son, Michael’s, autism diagnosis in 1992. The Dan Marino Foundation has a long and distinguished history of lifechanging programs and services, with the mission to “empower individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities”. The Foundation has raised more than $80 million to create and support unique and impactful initiatives. Among these are the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Outpatient Center, the Marino Autism Research Institute, Marino Adapted Aquatics, and Marino Campus post-secondary schools in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. In the spring of 2020, Marino Virtual Learning will premiere offering online courses focused on social competency, independent living, and gainful employment. EL PUENTE: BRIDGING THE SPANISH TO ENGLISH GAP THROUGH POETRY The world of poetry is expansive. It is something used by so many different people, written on beautifully different topics, and in equally beautiful languages. As a young latinx person, I grew up in both the English and Spanish world o f p o e t r y. I d i d n’ t e v e r t h i n k of poetry as something that was unique to just one language, so it makes sense that my poetry has always intertwined both my English and my Spanish. There’s something special and freeing about being able to find the perfect words or phrases in Spanish that English may not have, and vice versa. I think it’s important to be able to express yourself freely with whichever language or languages one may have at their disposal. Being latinx, for me, those languages are English and Spanish. I believe that more people in America would share their thoughts and emotions through poetry if they were given the chance to do so in their native language. I also believe allowing people a space to express themselves in their native tongue promotes and champions the diverse group we have here in South Florida. WESTON LIFE MAGAZINE I JULY 2020

El Puente is exactly what I stated above. A series of workshops surrounding and centering the latinx experience in a way that lets students incorporate one or both languages. In high school, I’d wished I had something similar to this. A way to get inspiration for my poetry and a space to write it in whichever language I wanted? It would have been a dream come true for me. Even just a space to be able to talk and relay poetry in Spanish would’ve been a dream. Which is why I wanted to create El Puente. In the process of creating these workshops, it was also brought to our attention the widening gap between older generations and their children. Four reasons why it’s important to be able to write poetry in Spanish (or your own language):

1

Language is important in day-to - day life and access to one’s mother tongue and those cultural implications are even more so; poetry is one way of accessing language and culture.

2

Comfort in one’s own language cannot be ignored and should instead be fostered, which can be done effectively through writing.

3

Creativity is important in self-expression and sometimes that creativity is dimmed when it is not given the proper space to flourish, or when it is given certain restrictions (such as English only writing parameters).

4

This program hopes to expand the bounds of poetry by mixing together the English and Spanish languages and two different generations in a form of self-expression that perhaps has not gotten its time to shine.

El Puente is held every Monday from 1-2 pm (for students), and 2-3 pm (for adults). For more info on El Puente and other bluapple Poetry programming, visit https://jasontaylorfoundation.com/bluapple-poetry-network/ WESTON LIFE MAGAZINE I JULY 2020

The Rotary Club of Weston honored local high school students on June 16, 2020, with an online ceremony that awarded approximately $150,000 in scholarships. The annual event, hosted virtually this year, celebrates young members of the community who demonstrate qualities of character reflecting the Rotary ’s motto of “Service Above Self.” The scholarships, which ranged from awards of several hundred dollars to full, two-year rides, went to 56 outstanding seniors from Cypress Bay High and The Sagemont School in Weston, Western High in Davie, and HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth) in Fort Lauderdale. Recipients were selected from hundreds of applicants who underwent an extensive interview process. A MODERN WORKSPACE

KELLEY KRONENBERG

K

elley Kronenberg, a diverse business law firm, recently hosted a grand opening event for its state-of-the-art corporate headquarters. More than 300 invited guests attended the catered affair and helped the firm celebrate the opening of its new 35,000-square-foot home located at 10360 West State Road 84 in Davie. “It brings me great joy to celebrate this significant milestone,” said Heath Eskalyo, CFO and principal partner who spearheaded the project for the firm. “Our new headquarters gives us the capacity to continue growing while enabling our team to better serve clients.”

sessions in a relaxed atmosphere, as well as a dedicated education center for employee training. The first floor also includes a mock courtroom, equipped with cameras and monitors that enable clients to participate in trial preparation remotely if they are not available to visit in person. Perhaps most impressive, the building features a rooftop terrace that incorporates landscaping, canopycovered kitchen, and bathrooms. The rooftop provides an open-air venue for Kelley Kronenberg employees to gather, eat and conduct meetings, as well as host client and firm events.

Eskalyo continued: “We have created a modern workspace that supports the firm’s efforts to promote and cultivate an inclusive environment where we celebrate diversity, families, and work-life balance.”

Another popular addition for the firm’s staff includes an employee café, complete with large TVs and modern, casual seating to serve as a common area for employees to take a break and share lunch with their co-workers.

The new structure emphasizes an inspiring workspace thoughtfully curated to foster collaboration and client convenience. The facility features private office suites, as well as collaborative workstations, in a space with distinctive architecture and progressive design elements.

Cabrera Ramos Architects of Doral designed the new headquarters. Alvarez Studios in Miami designed the interiors. The general contractor was Miller Construction based in Fort Lauderdale. Michael and Tyler Harrison of Equistone Partners served as development advisors, and SunTrust provided the construction loan.

The lobby boasts an architectural staircase that leads to a glass-panel balcony. There are two large conference areas that can transform into one great room for events, significant co-working common spaces, or smaller spaces to gather for informal brainstorming

As Kelley Kronenberg celebrates the opening of this new space, it also marks another milestone. In October 2019, the firm reached the 300 employee mark. This includes more than 140 lawyers practicing throughout Florida and Illinois.

Have Yourself a Day in

Quarantine One rooftop bar and brunch recommendation at a time.

W

by Jenna Kline

e’re going through a new normal as a world right now. So instead of a typical blog post that features a guide for a specific neighborhood or city, I decided to curate a full-day of recommendations for spending your time in quarantine. To be honest, I’ve really been trying to make the most of my days, even while physically isolated. During a meditation session I took part in, the instructor said changing your phrasing of a situation can ultimately have a huge impact on your perception of it. So instead of thinking about what this pandemic is doing to me, I’ve rephrased it to take more control of the situation. So when I plan out each week, I think about ways in which I get to live my life while in quarantine, taking more control of my life. Yes, I miss my friends, my in-person coffee runs, my coworkers, and my old life back in New York. However, we’re probably never going to have an opportunity like this again to put our lives on pause and really focus on putting ourselves (and those in our community) first. So, in this quarantine, I’ve planned events, tuned in to livestreams, learned how to make whipped coffee, valued the importance of self-care, and came together with strangers for a common cause. Now, I want to share this guide on how you can have yourself a day while in quarantine — because let’s face it, we’re going to be here a lot longer. So why not infuse a bit more positivity into our days and make the most of our virtual times ahead?

Morning Workout I’ve been starting each morning, whether it’s a weekday or weekend, with a workout. No, don’t worry, I didn’t become a fitness freak during this quarantine, and no one expects you to, either. Instead, I’ve been setting aside about 45 minutes when I wake up to take part in some type of physical, mental, or emotional workout. Whether it’s livestreaming a boxing class to let off steam, foam rolling and stretching to take care of my body, or meditating for my day ahead, any bit of workout for my body or mind first thing in the morning has really made a positive impact on my mood each day. As I’m sure most of you have seen by now, there are a bunch of online workout class options to choose from. I’m pretty big into pilates and boxing, so some of the classes that I’ve been live streaming or watching on YouTube include Rumble, Shadowbox, Cassey Ho’s Blogilates, and pvolve. And for those who want a bit more motivation to get their body moving, I’d recommend starting with a few Cassey Ho videos. I’ve been doing her workouts since college, and I truly swear by her. She does each move of the workout with you, making them more enjoyable and less daunting. Her workouts are typically low impact, which is great for people who are injury-prone like myself, and her videos include modifications so that people of all levels can join. Her videos are super positive and engaging, so for anyone just looking for a place to start, search her name on YouTube along with the part of your body that you want to target. I know that should get you off to a great start. For those who are trying to test out as many different workouts as they can right now with their free time, Sweats & The City posted a list of some of the great fitness deals and free trials going on right now. This way, you can test out a variety of programs and instructors to find out which type of workout you’re most excited to stick with.

Brunch I don’t know about you, but in our household, our meals are very important to us, especially when there’s not too much going on during the day. With my sister being vegetarian and myself being Gluten Free and Dairy Free for the last few months, we’ve got some tricky diets to accommodate. Luckily, there’s a ton of food bloggers sharing simple breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert recipes that literally anyone can make. It also makes for a great bonding activity with family or whoever you’re quarantined with. Some brunch recipes that we’ve been having in the mornings include Purely Kaylie’s banana bread pancakes, Eating Bird Food’s Somoa baked oatmeal, and Feel Good Foodie’s date shake. We also just ordered a juicer, so I’ve been having celery juice in the mornings, and if I’m craving something fruity, a strawberry banana smoothie with nut milk and other mix-ins are always a simple breakfast.

Afternoon Activities Give Yourself a Brain Boost I’ve really enjoyed giving myself an early afternoon brain boost to keep my energy going throughout the day. The New York Times offers a NYTimes Free Crossword Puzzle, which is a really fun daily activity that gets you thinking and just takes a few minutes out of your day. Working on a puzzle with family is always a great afternoon break, as well, especially during the work day. I’ve found that stopping my work for just a few minutes to work on a puzzle actually helps get my mind even more engaged, especially when there’s a more daunting work assignment that I’ve been putting off. Additionally, universities have been offering a bunch of free online classes through Coursera, which can definitely keep people busy and productive during these times. I’ve enrolled in Yale’s Science of Well-Being course, which has been extremely interesting and engaging, thus far. It’s completely free and comes with taped lectures, additional supplements or readings, and quizzes to ensure you’ve retained the information (which you also have the option to skip over if you’d like). I’d highly recommend you enrolling in a class that is of interest to you if you want to commit a few hours to learning rather than binging Hulu — or you can do both, like myself!

Tune Into IG Lives I’ve spent way too much time watching IG Lives during quarantine, but I really don’t regret it. I’ve tuned into live streams on topics across the spectrum, whether it’s joint workout videos, musicians live streaming themselves singing, virtual EDM concerts, or wellness tips from experts. I never thought I’d have watched tutorials on how to make a wine mask, how to give yourself a head massage, or how to foam roll the proper way — but hey, when in quarantine! I’d recommend that you go to the Instagram accounts of your favorite celebrities, sports leagues, brands, and clothing companies, and turn on the accounts’ IG Live notifications. Feel free to do some research beforehand to see which accounts have been posting frequently, connecting with guests virtually, and sharing content that you enjoy. If that’s the case, I’d recommend setting up those notifications so that you can continue being up-to-date with those specific accounts.

Don’t get me wrong, I always love a good spontaneous Houseparty call, but having events in my calendar definitely have made me have things to look forward to each day. These thoughtful events can event make some lasting memories when all of this is way behind us.

Connect with People I’ve found that my time in quarantine has allowed myself to actually connect with a lot more people than usual. I’ve been able to have the time to chat with hometown or college friends much more frequently, I’ve been able to spend quality time with many more of my New York friends, and I’ve been able to catch up with grandparents much more frequently. With many of my friends having much lighter schedules, I’ve been enjoying being able to truly catch up with the people I love without being in such a rush.

Practice Skill/Hobby Whether it’s reading, writing blog posts or playing Rummikub with the people you’re quarantined with, there’s so many fun activities that you can spend your time enjoying. You can also utilize apps to help you hone any skills that you’ve been wanting to work on like practicing your dribbling skills with the app Homecourt or even upping your GenZ dancing moves by learning viral TikTok dances. I’ve also used this free time to get more caught up on pop culture, which has included catching up on podcasts that I’d missed and watching relevant series that I never had the time to watch before, like Love is Blind.

Host Events Just because you’re quarantined, you do not have to be bored in the house, in the house bored. I would recommend ramping up your video calls with friends so that you can make them more of an event. By sending out a calendar invite, giving some sort of theme for a catch-up, and including a few people, it’s kept my catch-ups with friends engaging and has also held people more accountable to join. Whether it’s by creating a virtual book club, setting up an afternoon tea or virtual coffee sesh with friends, or even throwing a dance party at night, putting a name to your planned catch-ups can be fun. I even hosted a virtual prom a few weekends ago, where Prom 2020 Kings and Queens were crowned, superlatives were named, and we laughed about prom memories. Don’t get me wrong, I always love a good spontaneous Houseparty call, but having events in my calendar definitely have made me have things to look forward to each day. These thoughtful events can event make some lasting memories when all of this is behind us.

DIY DINNER Remember what I said earlier with my family having specific diet restrictions? Well, that hasn’t made cooking dinner too easy, especially for a family that never did it too frequently to begin with. Luckily, we’ve looked up healthy, simple recipes that aren’t too fancy and can be modified for each diet. For those looking for recipes that literally anyone can do, feel free to try cooking up the following meals: a vegan lentil loaf, sweet potato tacos, vegan buffalo wing sliders, and black bean soup.

Support Local Eats If you and your family want to take a break from cooking and just support a local restaurant, that totally works, too. I’d recommend looking up recent articles that cover restaurants still open in your area and just giving them a call to make sure they’re still open before you go. We’ve been supporting our local vegan supermarket for groceries and our favorite restaurants and cafes on Las Olas.

WESTONLIFEMAGAZINE.COM

Night Activities: Movie & TV Nights with Friends There are so many night activities that you can do with your friends or family that allow you to still relax while connecting with friends. I’ve set up recurring movie or TV show nights with friends. This way, we know that we get to catch up for a bit weekly while also watching a movie or TV show that we’ve been wanting to. In terms of logistics, I usually have my friends up on FaceTime — or use the Netflix Party extension when watching a show on Netflix — to be able to chat with friends while watching.

Wellness Night Self-care has really been a constant theme of my quarantine time. For those who love to be pampered, I’d recommend searching wellness magazines or brands on Instagram, and look at whether they have done any IG Lives with wellness professionals. My favorite accounts to follow have been Chillhouse, Well+Good, and Heyday. I’d recommend setting up a wellness night with some friends, grab a glass of wine, ingredients for a DIY face mask, and nail polish that you’ve had lying around. Pamper yourself because this quarantine is your time, and you deserve to make the most of it.

Virtual Get-Togethers You can set up Zoom happy hours for any occasion, whether it’s doing a virtual seder, celebrating peoples’ birthdays, or just having a White Claw with friends (virtually, of course). We also use Houseparty for more impromptu calls, which also have games to keep your calls light and interactive. The games include versions of Pictionary (called Quick Draw), Cards Against Humanity (called Chips & Guac), Ellen DeGeneres’ inspired Heads Up, and Trivia.

Online Seminars I used to attend General Assembly live courses and seminars in New York, and I’ve been continuing to keep up with their events that have moved virtual. For those who don’t know, General Assembly is an education company that teaches people a range of skills on their campuses worldwide. The company offers so many types of courses and programs — but I’d recommend checking out their free, virtual events or seminars to learn something new and perhaps find a topic that you may want to pursue further afterwards.

Sports Throwbacks Yes, the sports world has shut down, but for those creative enough, sports never really stops. My dad and I record or search for basketball games from 30+ years ago with NBA greats that I never had the chance to watch play. Getting to spend time with my dad reliving these monumental games in sports history is something I’d highly recommend to any sports fan, especially if you share that love with a family member or friend.

I hope you enjoyed this guide that I’ve been following on how to have myself a day while in quarantine. And for those who have been very affected by this pandemic and aren’t looking for a full day of activities like these, perhaps just pick one of these recs that will spark a little joy in your day. I’m hoping there’s at least one thing you can take from this article that can make your day a little brighter.

Thank you for reading, and please be well and stay safe. WESTON LIFE MAGAZINE I JULY 2020

How to Order a

FREE Credit Report By William E. Lewis Jr.

Before applying for an automobile, credit card, or home mortgage loan, it’s a good idea to check your credit report for errors. Banks, credit unions, auto finance and mortgage lenders have all raised the bar when making credit granting decisions. Long gone are the days when a 620 FICO credit score sufficed. Borrowers with bad credit are being turned down or forced to pay significantly higher interest rates when applying. Those with low credit scores have even been denied employment opportunities and automobile insurance. Negative information contained in credit reports – such as late payments, collection accounts and public record entries - determine whether you can obtain credit, goods, benefits, services, employment and/or insurance. It’s important to review your Equifax, Experian and TransUnion credit reports on a regular basis and correct any information that is inaccurate, erroneous, obsolete, or fraudulent due to possible identity theft. Don’t be scammed by the numerous “free credit report” opportunities found on the Internet. While dozens of companies offer that so-called “free credit report,” many of them have strings attached, such as subscription-based opt-in requiring you to provide credit card information. You really can obtain a free copy of your credit report. Under a narrow set of circumstances, you are entitled to a free copy of your credit report directly from the credit reporting agencies. If you have been denied credit, goods, benefits, services, employment or insurance, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are statutorily mandated under the Fair Credit Reporting Act to provide a copy without charge. Equifax can be contacted at (800) 685-1111 or online at www.Equifax.com. Experian can be contacted at (888) 397-3742 or online at www.Experian.com. Trans Union can be contacted at (800) 916-8800 or online at www.TransUnion.com. When ordering credit reports, be sure to indicate that you were denied credit, goods, benefits, services and/or employment when prompted. Absent these exceptions, you are entitled to one free “annual credit report” per year. For your free annual credit report, contact the central source at 877-FACT-ACT (877-322-8228) or online at www. AnnualCreditReport.com. Follow the voice prompts and obtain your credit report for review. Credit scores are not included with any of the “free credit reports” provided by the national credit reporting agencies of Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
