A Passion for Education President David A. Armstrong, J.D.

JANUARY 2020 | FROM THE PUBLISHER HOPE FOR PEACE & WORLD UNDERSTANDING IN THE NEXT DECADE As we ring in the New Year and a New Decade, my hope for Weston and the world is one where we can all come together to create Peace, World Understanding and Opportunity for all. That’s not to say I think we should give hand-outs, rather we should Lend a Hand to help those in need – locally & globally. Yes, we are our brother’s and sister’s keeper! This month we highlight a leader in education who also calls Weston home! David Armstrong is the President of Saint Thomas University. I first met David at Acquolina Italian Restaurant when he was dining with another David Armstrong – the outgoing President of Broward College. I am confident you will find David’s story and his vision for STU interesting and you’ll be proud, as I am, to call him a neighbor. We also have some photo Scene Pages of recent events I hope you enjoy. And, should you have any New Year’s party photos (9-11 with names) you’d like us to publish, send them to me at Jim@WestonLifeMagazine.com - No Charge! As we look ahead for the City of Weston, we are turning the corner as we enter the new decade. We will hit 25 Years of Enjoying the Weston Life in 2021. Last year we lost a 40-year veteran in Public Administration in our City Manager, John Flint, to a well-earned retirement. This year we lose a Mayor to term limits, who has served for the City for 16 years. Just some things to keep in mind as we turn the chapter on the next decade. I hope this month, as we start the New Year and New Decade, you have as a resolution to help Change Weston and the World for the better. Get involved in your community in some way to keep Weston the Great City it is known for – being the best place to live, work, visit and raise a family. I wish you a great month and a Happy New Year!

Enjoy The Life

Back In The 1960’s, Where There Was Advertising There Was Bourbon. It was used to break the ice between hard-nosed business minds and free-spirited creative thinkers. It was raised heartily over successes and poured generously over defeats. Bourbon is iconic to the genesis of advertising. Perhaps, that’s because bourbon mirrors our business so closely. Crafting a great campaign takes talent and persistence. Its greatness often lies in nuance and subtlety. Some people appreciate this painstaking art, while others never quite get it. At Emblem, we partner with clients who revere the process; who strive for bold uniqueness; and who genuinely want to make something great. We’ve found these are the relationships that just keep getting better with age. Check out our work. Then, let’s meet for a drink.

BUILDING AMERICA’S NEXT GREAT CATHOLIC INSTITUTION 5 Questions with David A. Armstrong, J.D. Weston resident, and President at St. Thomas University

WESTONLIFEMAGAZINE.COM

WESTON LIFE MAGAZINE I JANUARY 2020

W

hen you talk to David A. Armstrong, J.D., resident at Weston Hills, you will learn about his love of music and golf, football and adoration of his wife and kids. Originally from Ohio, Armstrong comes to South Florida from Kentucky where he served as the president of Thomas More University. With a passion for education, Armstrong now serves as President of at St. Thomas University in North Miami, where he is helping to educate the leaders of tomorrow and giving hundreds of kids in our community an opportunity to pursue a degree. Learn more about Dave, his love for South Florida and the university:

Tell us about St. Thomas University and what makes it special? St. Thomas University has a unique offering for South Florida. A small faith-based institution, it is just one of eight Archdiocesan institutions in the nation, has a reputation for its invested and caring professors, small class sizes, a family environment we like to call our STUfam, and is known for key programs like its Sports Administration and Ethical Leadership. Most recently, STU was recognized by U.S. News and World Report as number one in social mobility for regional universities in the South. This means we provide hundreds of students from a variety of backgrounds with the opportunity to get an affordable private education, that catapults them into a long successful career and into a different economic stratum. What differentiates us is that we inculcate values into our education and strive to graduate productive, and ethical world leaders and citizens.

What made you come to South Florida? What about Weston? Once I arrived in South Florida I fell in love with the campus, the people, the institution, and the potential. Miami has a magnetism that is hard to deny and is something that STU will capitalize on. No one can arrive in Miami, or South Florida and not be enamored with the sun, beaches and incredible culture. STU also has a special place in my heart. I was a first-generation college student, and while my parents didn’t get to go to college, they understood the value of education and made sure that me and my siblings pursued a degree. I was fortunate WESTON LIFE MAGAZINE I JANUARY 2020

enough to go to a small faith-based institution like STU and is where I met my wife and where two of my siblings also found a home and followed in my footsteps toward obtain a degree. Universities like STU play a very special role in our education system, because they provide hundreds of students with a personalized high-touch education and experience. Weston offers its residents everything that anyone could want. Leslie and I found a beautiful home on Weston Hills golf course with the expertise of our realtor, Terri Perlini. Our backyard looks at hole number 10 of the Player’s Course. From beautiful homes, golf courses and a lot of amenities, Weston offered my family and I the perfect environment. It has quickly become our second home, and we love the community we have found here.

What is one thing every parent should know before sending their child to college? Parents need to shop around and find the perfect college for their family and situation. There is a misconception that we must all send our children to those elite high cost institutions to succeed. That is clearly not true, and those institutions are out of reach for most families. You can get a private high-quality education, in a range that fits your needs and budget. A college degree is an investment and you need to find an institution that fits your wants, values, and financial capabilities. There are different colleges around the states that will give scholarships for a variety of different talents and disciplines, and it is on each student to find that university where they will thrive.

What do you hope to accomplish in this new decade? In the next decade, STU will become Miami’s Great Catholic Institution. We hope to grow our enrollment, strengthen our top core programs and become a top choice for our local students. We know that our future has a lot in store for us. Personally, I hope to be able to spend more time with my family and friends and continue to enjoy the wonderful life that we have been able to build here in our community and Weston.

A MODERN WORKSPACE

KELLEY KRONENBERG

K

elley Kronenberg, a diverse business law firm, recently hosted a grand opening event for its state-of-the-art corporate headquarters. More than 300 invited guests attended the catered affair and helped the firm celebrate the opening of its new 35,000-square-foot home located at 10360 West State Road 84 in Davie. “It brings me great joy to celebrate this significant milestone,” said Heath Eskalyo, CFO and principal partner who spearheaded the project for the firm. “Our new headquarters gives us the capacity to continue growing while enabling our team to better serve clients.”

sessions in a relaxed atmosphere, as well as a dedicated education center for employee training. The first floor also includes a mock courtroom, equipped with cameras and monitors that enable clients to participate in trial preparation remotely if they are not available to visit in person. Perhaps most impressive, the building features a rooftop terrace that incorporates landscaping, canopycovered kitchen, and bathrooms. The rooftop provides an open-air venue for Kelley Kronenberg employees to gather, eat and conduct meetings, as well as host client and firm events.

Eskalyo continued: “We have created a modern workspace that supports the firm’s efforts to promote and cultivate an inclusive environment where we celebrate diversity, families, and work-life balance.”

Another popular addition for the firm’s staff includes an employee café, complete with large TVs and modern, casual seating to serve as a common area for employees to take a break and share lunch with their co-workers.

The new structure emphasizes an inspiring workspace thoughtfully curated to foster collaboration and client convenience. The facility features private office suites, as well as collaborative workstations, in a space with distinctive architecture and progressive design elements.

Cabrera Ramos Architects of Doral designed the new headquarters. Alvarez Studios in Miami designed the interiors. The general contractor was Miller Construction based in Fort Lauderdale. Michael and Tyler Harrison of Equistone Partners served as development advisors, and SunTrust provided the construction loan.

The lobby boasts an architectural staircase that leads to a glass-panel balcony. There are two large conference areas that can transform into one great room for events, significant co-working common spaces, or smaller spaces to gather for informal brainstorming

As Kelley Kronenberg celebrates the opening of this new space, it also marks another milestone. In October 2019, the firm reached the 300 employee mark. This includes more than 140 lawyers practicing throughout Florida and Illinois.

How to Order a

FREE Credit Report By William E. Lewis Jr.

Before applying for an automobile, credit card, or home mortgage loan, it’s a good idea to check your credit report for errors. Banks, credit unions, auto finance and mortgage lenders have all raised the bar when making credit granting decisions. Long gone are the days when a 620 FICO credit score sufficed. Borrowers with bad credit are being turned down or forced to pay significantly higher interest rates when applying. Those with low credit scores have even been denied employment opportunities and automobile insurance. Negative information contained in credit reports – such as late payments, collection accounts and public record entries - determine whether you can obtain credit, goods, benefits, services, employment and/or insurance. It’s important to review your Equifax, Experian and TransUnion credit reports on a regular basis and correct any information that is inaccurate, erroneous, obsolete, or fraudulent due to possible identity theft. Don’t be scammed by the numerous “free credit report” opportunities found on the Internet. While dozens of companies offer that so-called “free credit report,” many of them have strings attached, such as subscription-based opt-in requiring you to provide credit card information. You really can obtain a free copy of your credit report. Under a narrow set of circumstances, you are entitled to a free copy of your credit report directly from the credit reporting agencies. If you have been denied credit, goods, benefits, services, employment or insurance, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are statutorily mandated under the Fair Credit Reporting Act to provide a copy without charge. Equifax can be contacted at (800) 685-1111 or online at www.Equifax.com. Experian can be contacted at (888) 397-3742 or online at www.Experian.com. Trans Union can be contacted at (800) 916-8800 or online at www.TransUnion.com. When ordering credit reports, be sure to indicate that you were denied credit, goods, benefits, services and/or employment when prompted. Absent these exceptions, you are entitled to one free “annual credit report” per year. For your free annual credit report, contact the central source at 877-FACT-ACT (877-322-8228) or online at www. AnnualCreditReport.com. Follow the voice prompts and obtain your credit report for review. Credit scores are not included with any of the “free credit reports” provided by the national credit reporting agencies of Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
