Thomas Dambo

Mama Mimi

Homecoming:

Mama Mimi JH Public Art joyfully welcomed environmental artist Thomas Dambo to Jackson in May 2021. Dambo creates giant trolls all over the world from repurposed materials, inspiring us to protect the environment and to invite discovery. In June, JH Public Art and the Jackson Hole Land Trust unveiled Mama Mimi set within Rendezvous Park. Over 25 feet Inspiration, everywhere.

tall, with a head of hair fashioned out of driftwood, this new artwork is thoughtfully sited along the banks of the big pond to be discovered by curious explorers of all ages. Mama Mimi has inspired the community beyond the banks of the R Park pond, and ventured into classrooms and summer camps throughout Jackson Hole.

Educating:

Build-a-Troll Challenge Over 400 local youth participated in the Build-a-Troll Challenge to create trolls and troll houses from recycled materials collected from the community. A video (linked here) featuring Mama Mimi artist Thomas Dambo and local organizations taught students about waste in Teton County and the connection between recycling and land conservation. Trolls and troll houses were displayed at the Recycling Center, Teton County Inspiration, everywhere.

Reaching:

ArtMobile The ArtMobile had a busy summer, traveling into neighborhoods with a focus on our giant troll Mama Mimi. It reached over 350 local youth with weekly collaborative arts programming staffed by community mobilizers and artists. Building on the success of the ArtMobile’s summer activities, we extended programming through the fall, reaching an additional 100 students with afterschool gatherings in two neighborhoods over the course of October. Launching:

MoonShot 5x5 Making the best of a virtual format, five new public art ideas were rocketed out into the universe on January 28, 2021. MC Jeff Moran led the evening, which was livestreamed from the Center for the Arts stage for over 100 viewers tuning in from home. Five local creatives presented their boldest, most ambitious ideas with 5 slides in 5 minutes, along with a reading from Trevor Bloom, a naturalist with the Nature Conservancy. Local artist Tenley Thompson was selected by the audience to receive the $1000 “Buzz Aldrin

Award” for her ancient tree ring MoonShot. Presenters: Trevor Bloom Borbay Fernando Jáuregui Kika MacFarlane Suzanne Morlock Tenley Thompson Thank you: Wyoming Arts Council Center for the Arts Staff Jeff Moran Friends of Public Art

Eye-Catching:

ArtSpot In winter 2021, local artist David Watson constructed a 3-dimensional version of his painting “Stampede” for the ArtSpot. This brightly colored, engaging work was on view for most of the year, engaging over 30,000 daily drivers along Broadway. “Stampede” depicts a group of brightly painted bison running towards, or away from, drivers passing by, depending on your direction of travel. Watson credits this large scale project Creativity as Catalyst.

WildWalls By showing artworks in public settings, WildWalls aims to reach broad audiences with conservation messages through public art. Two large-scale murals and nine temporary wheatpaste murals transformed the streets and alleys of downtown Jackson into an open air gallery. We celebrated WildWalls with three community

Inspiring:

Sage Living Artwork for the Sage Living healing art collection was installed during the summer of 2021, marking the culmination of a many years long process. Each piece – seven commissioned pieces and over 45 pieces specially created or curated for the building – was selected by a committee comprised of St John’s Health staff, community members, and art professionals who reviewed multiple rounds of thoughtful artist submissions. The selection process was facilitated by JH Public Art, who was hired in 2014 by St John’s Health Foundation to develop new collection criteria and donation policies that are guided by evidence-based criteria and designed to promote healing and wellness. Commuting:

Pathway Murals JH Public Art’s partnership with JH Community Pathways continues to provide terrific access for local artists and collaborating partners to engage in large-scale public art projects. Two pathway murals were completed in 2021: “Cause and Effect” by artist Nicolette Maw and Art Association summer campers for the Garaman Park underpass; and “Cow in Motion” completed by Prospect Studios with the help of visiting American Institute of Architects (AIA) members and featuring the work of Teton Science Schools students, Dolyn Kinney and Augustine Porter.

JH Public Art was asked again to bring a graphic reminder to Slow Down to our most congested pathways. Artist Walt Gerald created bike path stencils to visually remind folks to take it slow. Illuminating:

GlowNights GlowNights 2021 artworks opened December 18 with four light-based installations in Teton Village and the town of Jackson. GlowNights artworks energize community public spaces in an effort to bring people together during the darkest nights of the year. With isolation as a leading mental health indicator, JH Public Art and GlowNights partners hoped that this year’s installations inspired wonder as well as safe and accessible gathering.

Inspiration, everywhere.
