From the Director Join us in 2021 as we focus our creativity under the theme of RENEW. Jackson Hole Public Art has planned a year of ambitious artworks – educational and whimsical – designed to spark the imagination. From a Giant Troll by recycling artist Thomas Dambo that will land in R Park, and WildWalls murals that use augmented reality to highlight climate change in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, to a summer of making with repurposed materials at the ArtMobile, JH Public Art will bring you a year filled with promise and hope for a dazzling future. Our 2021 public art installations will renew your spirit, energize our public spaces, and repurpose the discarded into the innovative. The coming year is a fresh canvas. Are you excited about the possibilities? We hope you join us in shared public art experiences that bring us closer together, build compassion, and renew our collective, creative community. Don’t miss the ArtChase 2021. Curious? It’s coming this October! — Carrie Geraci

Launching:
MoonShot 5x5 Seven new public art ideas were rocketed out into the universe on January 30, 2020 from the Center for the Arts lobby. MC Jeff Moran led the evening, during which local creatives presented their boldest, most ambitious ideas with 5 slides in 5 minutes to a packed house of over 100 attendees. Local student Mariela Santelices was awarded the $500 “Buzz Aldrin Award” audience favorite for her idea to address teen mental health in Teton County.

Dreaming:
Cloud Factory The Cloud Factory (a temporary factory and vending machine that creates and dispenses tangible, portable clouds) opened to the public for one brief, beautiful day, the 13th of March, on the eve of the sudden pandemic closure. With support from angel investor Agnes Bourne and JH Public Art, the Cloud Factory enveloped the Town Enclosure Pavilion on the lawn of the Center for the Arts. Volunteer Employees, Creativity as Catalyst.
under the guidance of Cloud Conductor, Indigo Skyy (aka artist Jenny Dowd), created and dispensed clouds to the great joy and wonder of the many guests. The Cloud Factory was previous MoonShot 5x5 bold idea and will open again soon. Thank you: Indigo Skyy Agnes Bourne Center for the Arts

Activating:
WildWalls By siting artworks on streetscapes and alleys throughout the Town of Jackson, WildWalls reaches broad audiences with conservation messages through public art. New this year, WildWalls combined murals with augmented reality features to promote a greater understanding and awareness about local water quality issues.
Inspiration, everywhere.
Nine temporary murals by local artists were joined by a new, permanent mural by artist Dan Toro sponsored by and located at Snake River Brewing. The WildWalls murals highlighted the beauty and told the story of the scenic and wild Snake River, Teton glaciers, and watersheds unique to the Jackson Hole area.

Inspiring:
ArtSpot The ArtSpot – both sculpture and rotating art venue – found its new home this fall on the Broadway hillside. Now restored, the ArtSpot has been filled with messages of hope, community, and togetherness created by emerging local artists and students mentored by established local artists. These site-specific installations inspire moments of discovery and joy for the more than 30,000 daily drivers that pass by. Inspiration, everywhere.

Reinventing:
ArtMobile In 2020, the ArtMobile was reinvented to reach more youth, locally and safely, across our community. Partnering with local organizations, JH Public Art distributed creative activities to youth to encourage their imaginations, with self-guided explorations in both English and Spanish. We paired art fun with healthy meals, delivered directly to local neighborhoods, all summer long.

FoundSpace
FoundSpace, now in its sixth year, brings awareness to Jackson Hole Land Trust’s protected properties with public access, through creative, low-impact public art installations. This year, Artist Jenny Dowd and Poet Matt Daly collaborated on “Shaky Translations,” which imagined the lives of the non-human inhabitants along the Wildflower trail, through imagery and poetry in both English and Spanish.

Astoria Artist Rendering
Astoria Hot Springs Astoria Park Conservancy and The Trust for Public Land selected artist Katie Christiansen to create a custom art installation at the revitalized Astoria Hot Springs and Park, with project management support from JH Public Art. Christiansen designed a welcoming artwork for the new entrance to illustrate the Park’s unique ecological features, following creative placemaking activities

Cache Creek Tube Jackson Hole Public Art and Teton Conservation District, in partnership with the Town of Jackson Public Works Dept, enlisted graphic designer Matt Grimes (Heliocentric Designs) to create an iconic, highly recognizable graphic brand for the Cache Creek Stormwater Tube. This brand is now visible, with corresponding descriptive signs, along the streets that follow Cache Creek’s path underground.

Town Pedestrianization This summer, JH Public Art partnered with the Town of Jackson, to add art to temporary parklets when our downtown moved outdoors for health and safety in summer 2020. Barriers became canvases and local youth created flower planters from wood scraps to line the streets of downtown Jackson.

Pathway Murals Two new murals were created for our Jackson Hole Community Pathways system in 2020. The first was completed by Girls Actively Participating! middle school students, depicting the Snake River watershed, with mentorship from local artist Natalie Connell and with inspiration from Protect our Water JH. The mural was completed last winter and installed just south of Garaman Park on the Town of Jackson’s pedestrian pathway. The second Pathways mural was just completed by the local artist Marco Miller for the highly trafficked Path22 underpass
in Wilson, Wyoming. This mural, titled “Cruising Critters,” depicts regional fauna on bicycles of all sizes and is mirrored on both sides of the pathway. Artists: Marco Miller, Path 22 Natalie Connell, Garaman Park Partners: Girls Actively Participating! JH Community Pathways Protect our Water JH

CLB Architects Town Enclosure in Bozeman, MT
Relocating:
Town Enclosure The award-winning Town Enclosure Pavilion was removed from the Center for the Arts Park this fall, and made its way to the Story Mill Community Park in Bozeman, Montana. Crews, led by On Site Management (OSM), craned and dug out the Town Enclosure Pavilion in early October over two years after it was first unveiled in June, 2018. The Town Enclosure Pavilion was born from a true collaboration between JH Public Art and the Center for the Art’s 2018 Creative-in-Residence

GlowNights GlowNights 2020 returned for the third year in December with a monthlong exhibit of original, light-based installations inspired by ENERGY: how we use it, where it’s from, and where it will go. Energy Conservation Works, Jackson’s local energy conservation organization, partnered with JH Public Art to provide messages for the public via augmented reality at each installation. These messages brought attention to three key local green energy initiatives. GlowNights artworks, six in total, activated popular pedestrian spaces and inspired wonder in both Teton Village and Town of Jackson.
