ANNUAL

REPORT

A LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP Dear friends and family of Jewish Family Service, As we reflect on the past year and celebrate our achievements, I am inspired by the incredible support JFS has received from our donors, volunteers, and dedicated staff. You are the heart and soul of Jewish Family Service, and your commitment to the community has allowed us to serve over 16,500 individuals during this fiscal year. This year’s annual campaign theme, Moving Forward Together, captures the essence of this journey. It is a testament to our collective strength in facing numerous obstacles in these challenging times. We can not overlook the reality that the cost of living continues to hit a new all-time high each year, and the needs of our community members continue to rise. Your support is not only appreciated, but is essential in order to make a profound difference in the lives of those we serve. At the heart of our mission is the concept of whole-person care. We understand that one aspect of a person’s life affects all aspects of their lives. In this holistic approach, we are committed to facing the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, and social well-being. This annual report holds a special significance as it will be the last of its kind, in the sense that, by next year, we anticipate significant growth in our agency and the introduction of new services. I am thrilled to announce the opening of our first Community Health Center, a significant milestone for Jewish Family Service. We will be expanding our services to include much-needed medical care. This clinic underscores our commitment to providing whole-person care, and will not only address the physical health of our community, but also contribute to their success in all areas of life. We believe that when individuals are in good health, it becomes a solid foundation to achieve self-sufficiency, financial stability, and overall well being. As we navigate the path forward together, I want you to know that your contributions to the organization are deeply valued. Our community is the driving force behind our mission, and your generosity, compassion, and unwavering support inspire not only myself, but the entire staff, every single day. We look forward to the journey ahead, and we are excited to have you by our side. Warm regards,

Cathy Barker President & CEO

Eric Goldberg 2022-2024 Board Chair

ALEX’S STORY: FROM FAMILY TO FORTITUDE “After my adult daughter unexpectedly passed away, I found myself struggling with a whirlwind of emotions and serious financial struggles as I became the sole provider for her children, my grandchildren, at the age 58. To be honest, I had no idea how to provide for my grandkids while dealing with my own grief. I thought I would be able to retire comfortably, but there were times when I had to skip meals just to make sure the kids had enough to eat.

That’s when I turned to the JFS Food Pantry for help. I was able to shop there with dignity, picking out items that I knew would put smiles on my grandkids’ faces. I walked away with a month’s worth of groceries without having to pay a dime. That was a glimmer of hope in the midst of all that chaos.” -- Alex, Food Pantry Client, 58* *client’s name has been changed

EXPANDING ACCESS TO KOSHER FOODS This year, the USDA organized a virtual conference involving representatives from the Jewish and Muslim communities. The primary goal was to enhance the accessibility of Kosher and Halal foods within Food Pantries across the country. While Margot’s Kosher Corner already provides shoppers with access to Glatt Kosher meat and a selection of essential holiday items, a new movement has emerged to expand the range of reputable kosher brands for canned goods and shelf-stable items within our Food Pantry. This initiative extends far beyond the scope of Margot’s Kosher Corner. The JFS Food Pantry is proud to offer an inclusive selection across all isles that caters to the diverse needs of our community.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CONTINUED PROGRESS WITH CLINICAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The Clinical Internship Program is designed to improve Masters or PhD students’ professional skills by providing direct and indirect client services, attending additional in-house training, and working under close supervision of a licensed mental health practitioner. The eight clinical interns at JFS have the opportunity to work with diverse populations as well as a variety of clinical concerns. Our clinical team is proud to mentor and train new clinicians as they prepare to enter the counseling field. Since re-vamping the program, interns have allowed us to expand our services to provide services to additional clients and reduce wait times. The clinical interns have been working closely with clients at PLAN, Jubilee Park, Roseland, and JFS Behavioral Health services.

FAMILY FINDS COMFORT AND COMPASSION DURING CHALLENGING TIMES I was born in 1931 and moved to Dallas with my husband Samuel after the Holocaust for a fresh start. On the surface, it seemed like we were leading secure and happy lives, but beneath it all, it became clear that we each carried the weight of deep emotional wounds from our past. To help us navigate this pain and find a way to heal, we turned to JFS. As the years went by, aging began to present us with life-altering challenges. With our adult children living in different states, JFS stepped in with sponsored home care and a dedicated Friendly Visitor, ensuring we had the support we needed to feel comfortable, less lonely, and treated with dignity in our daily lives.

Samuel became ill as he aged, and JFS was there to provide our family with assistance in arranging hospice care, which offered him the utmost comfort and support in his final days. I also received psychoeducational therapy to help me prepare for the inevitable loss of my dear husband. And when that heart-wrenching moment arrived, JFS was there for me once again, offering the much-needed bereavement support. I thank JFS for helping my husband find a sense of comfort throughout his entire life and allowing us to cherish each moment we had together. -- Lana, JFS client, 92* *client’s name has been changed

THE KLEIN SUMMER INTERNSHIP IS SHAPING OUR FUTURE LEADERS The Klein Internship, established in 2009 by Jewish Family Service, pays tribute to Rabbi Gerald J. Klein’s lifelong dedication to social justice. It provides an opportunity for Dallas area teens to intern at local nonprofits, offering hands-on learning experiences. During the 180-hour summer internship, students gain job and college readiness skills, understand nonprofit roles, enhance their communication abilities, and become more attuned to the needs of the clients they serve. This summer, 18 high school-aged interns, including one at the JFS Food Pantry, completed their internships and are now eager to embark on their senior year of high school, inspired and ready to make a positive impact on the world!

Thank you to the incredible team of over 950 volunteers who have given their time and energy to further the mission of Jewish Family Service. Without their dedication, we wouldn’t have been able to make a difference in the lives of more than 16,500 individuals and families this year.

IN THE COMMUNITY EMPOWERING EDUCATORS: JFS HOSTS TEACHER TRAINING FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT, CONCERNS AND INTERVENTIONS Hosted by Lacey Mathews, LSSP, and Ariela Goldstein, JFS conducted its largest teacher training workshop, attended by educators from several schools in the community. The workshop was designed specifically for elementary school educators from Dallas’ Jewish schools and it warmly welcomed participants from a wide range of educational institutions. The workshop covered various topics in child development, concerns, and interventions, including discussions on theoretical foundations of typical vs. atypical development and basics of behavior modification, along with their applications in the classroom. Participants earned 1.5 hours of CRE (Continuing Education) credit and received a certificate of completion. The training was highly successful, drawing nearly 40 attendees from schools across the community, and it garnered positive feedback from the participating teachers.

FIRST ANNUAL JEWISH COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP BREAKFAST In May, JFS hosted a meeting that brought together dozens of leaders from the Dallas Jewish community in order to discuss the needs of the community and create accessibility to the resources available. Attendees included Rabbis, representatives from school administrations, and leadership professionals from local organizations including the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas and Chai. During this roundtable, JFS provided the community leaders with updated lists of available resources in an effort to expand the reach of services to those who may need it. Moreover, the meeting served as a platform for community leaders to engage with one another and identify the specific needs within their circles, and discuss possible solutions to these issues.

NETWORK OF JEWISH HUMAN SERVICE AGENCIES (NJHSA) POWERNET 2023 CONFERENCE HELD IN DALLAS In May, The Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies (NJHSA) held its annual conference in Dallas. PowerNET 2023 brought together over 630 members of Jewish Human Service Agencies from across North America to address common challenges, provide solutions, and establish dynamic partnerships. With Dallas as the host city, JFS had the privilege of managing the welcome station, and several department heads presented informative sessions to the attendees of the conference. These sessions not only showcased our services and the impact of our programs but also fostered connections with other Jewish Human Service Agencies, inspiring action among those facing similar situations. As many attendees had never been to Dallas before, JFS was able to organize tours through the Food Pantry, PLAN Clubhouse, and our behavioral health partnership with Jubilee Park Community Center.

J UUSSTT FO OR R S HHOW OW The 2023 ‘Just For Show’ fundraiser left us with hearts full of memories and a renewed sense of community. With Broadway legends Sandra Joseph and Ron Bohmer as the talent, the event was a magical experience that not only entertained everyone but also contributed to funding vital programs and services provided by Jewish Family Service. The event was co-chaired by Anita and Todd Chanon, along with Michael Kaufman and Durward Watson, who played pivotal roles in making the night a success. Michael Kaufman, one of the co-chairs, set the tone for the evening with a personal and touching speech. He shared how JFS has impacted his own family, recounting how his mother received much-needed support as a young single mom, demonstrating the significant influence of the services provided by JFS. The Majestic Theater in Downtown Dallas provided the perfect backdrop for the enchantment that unfolded on stage. Sandra Joseph and Ron Bohmer transported the audience to the magical world of Broadway as their voices filled the theater with everyone’s favorite tunes. Following the performance, there was a VIP reception, providing donors with a unique opportunity to meet and greet the Broadway stars. The evening was brought to life by the incredible talents of Sandra Joseph and Ron Bohmer and supported by the generosity of our community. Beyond being a night of entertainment, it served as a reminder of the unity within our community, compassion, and desire to help others. We thank the nearly 1000 people who attended the event for supporting the essential services provided by JFS to over 16,500 members of the community this year.

JFS FOUNDATION The JFS Foundation supports the long-term viability of the mental health and social services of Jewish Family Service through planned giving and endowments. It allows thoughtful, generous people to make a lasting difference in our community for generations by ensuring the availability of JFS’ high-quality, accredited services for any child, teen, adult, or older adult in need. Establishing a fund or endowment to the Foundation is an investment in the long-term success and viability of the programs and services of JFS. While a yearly contribution to JFS makes an important, direct, and immediate impact, a Foundation fund helps secure the future of JFS services in the community.
